Briefly Growth prospects COTABATO City – A keen observer of Southern Philippines development trends has recognized the capacities of Muslim Mindanao to ultimately overcome its backwater history to pursue longlasting stability and full progress. Georgi Engelbrecht, senior analyst for Philippine affairs under the International Crisis Group (ICG), wrote in a recent paper that “the Bangsamoro has untapped economic potential that lies in stark contrast to the present reality of poverty.” The ICG is a Brusselsbased think-tank and advocacy group with offices in seven countries.

Rice tariff cuts President Rodrigo Duterte has decided to lower the tariff rates on imported rice to address the 10-percent supply shortfall, Malacañang said on Thursday. This, after several senators raised concern over Duterte’s decision to impose a temporary reduction of rice tariffs. “Ang iniiwasan lang po natin, bagama’t meron po tayong napakataas na ani ng bigas ngayon, meron pa rin po tayong shortfall na mga 10 percent (Although we have ample harvest of rice, what we are avoiding is a shortfall which is about 10 percent),” Presidential Spok es pe rso n Ha rry Roque said in an online press briefing.

HE opening of new bus routes in Mindanao will further reopen economic activities in the island’s regions, the chief of the L and Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board-in Region 10 (LTFRB-10) said Wednesday.

Among the newest opened to the riding public was the Cagayan de Oro-Cotabato City route that passes through some parts of Bukidnon, Lanao del Sur, Cotabato, and Maguindanao, said Aminoden Guro, LTFRB-10 director. “ The opening of the new route and launching of PUBs will also contribute to

the gradual recovery of the economy in the region,” Guro said, adding that it also gives inter-regional access to public commuters in Northern Mindanao, Soccsksargen, and the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao.
