Unemployment benefits THE Social Security System (SSS) released P31.69 billion in calamity loans to 2.12 million memberborrowers, and P1.71 billion in unemployment insurance benefits (UIB) to 136,000 claimants last year in support of government efforts to mitigate the economic shock of the coronavirus disease 2019 (Covid-19) pandemic on wage earners. In its report to Finance Secretary and Social Security Commission (SSC) Chairman Carlos Dominguez III, the SSS said it also released P30.47 billion in salary loans to 1.28 million members, and extended pension loans totaling P3.4 billion to 74,799 borrowers in 2020. The SSS said it saw a marked increase in the number of borrowers under its Calamity Loan Assistance Program (CLAP) after President Rodrigo Duterte declared a state of calamity nationwide as a result of the Covid-19 crisis.

AVAO City — A senior executive from Mindanao’s private sector has expressed support for the extension of the transition deadline of the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (BARMM), saying that such additional legroom “will further contribute to economic stability in the region.”
Antonio Peralta, chair of the European Chamber of Commerce of the Philippines (ECCP)-Southern Mindanao Business Council acknowledged in a statement that the reason stakeholders have been clamoring for an extension of the transition period is to “help lay down the best foundation for governance.” Supporters of the extension of the Bangsamoro transition period for another three years stage a rally outside the

Cooperativism DEPARTMENT of Trade and Industry (DTI) Secretary Ramon Lopez said cooperatives have been a staunch partner of the agency in helping micro and small entrepreneurs grow their businesses. At the 31st anniversary of the Cooperative Development Authority (CDA) Wednesday, Lopez said even before CDA was not yet an attached agency of DTI, it has been a partner in delivering government services to smallscale businesses, particularly in the rural areas. He added the DTI partners with cooperatives to reach micro and small enterprises for them to avail the department’s microfinancing program and shared service facility (SSF) program.

KORONADAL City — The Islamic advisory council or the Darul-Ifta in the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (BARMM) has deemed the government’s coronavirus 2019 (COVID-19) vaccination drive as permissible to Islamic believers. Grand mufti (Islamic jurist) Abulhuraira Udasan,
executive director of the BARMM Darul-Ifta, issued t he religious guideline backing the government’s inoculation campaign.

DESPITE funding shortfall precipitated by the pandemic, the National Electrification Administration (NEA) reported that the country’s electric cooperatives (ECs) still surpassed its targeted 14 million customerconnections as of end-December last year. The government-run agency said the customer-connections had been higher by
