Briefly Growth strategies DAVAO City -- Top official of the National Economic and Development Authority 11 has cited the inclusive growth strategies geared towards reducing poverty in Davao Region. Speaking to reporters during the roadshow of the Updated Regional Development Plan 2014-2016 conducted in the Provincial Capitol in Nabunturan, Compostela Valley, she said these programs include the conditional cash transfer, universal coverage of the Philippine Health Insurance Corporation, K + 12 basic education program, scholarship programs for the priority sectors aimed at improving the competencies of students consequently making them better employed and of world-class standard. She explained that the CCT is an investment in human capital of the future generations while the universal coverage of the Philippine Health Insurance Corporation aimed at addressing the basic health needs of the citizenry, especially the indigent members of the society.
Stable power EVEN the Malampaya gas facility’s shutdown scheduled from March 15 until April 13, Department of Energy (DOE) Secretary Carlos Jericho Petilla has assured that Luzon’s power supply is stable as long as no plants go on forced outage. “For as long as power plants do not go on unplanned or forced outage, we should be okay,” Petilla said in a statement. He further stressed the public would only experience days of brownouts when the plants are down and not a full month.

DAVAO Cit y -- Ab out 200,000 additional hectares are expected to be planted to cacao by 2016 with corresponding technical skills education for farmers to ensure high yields under the Participator y Cacao Intercropping Project (PCIP) of the Mindanao Development Authority (MinDA). The mechanism to achieve the goal, said MinDA Executive Director Janet M. Lopoz, is to provide the farmers with both inputs and technical know-how on growing a high-quality crop. The PCIP report said 285
hectares of cacao nurseries are needed to provide seedlings that will cover the targeted 200,000 hectares. Ms. Lopoz told BusinessWeek Mindanao the end-goal is to “help the farmers increase their income.” B as ed on Bureau of Agricultural Statistics data, the total area in Mindanao planted to cacao was 7,413 hectares as of 2013, where the harvest accounted for 90% of the country’s total production at 4,366 metric tons (MT). The Davao Region contributed 79% to the
national production led by Davao del Sur with 1,718 MT. Mindanao’s production rate was also higher by 12% at 590 kilograms a hectare compared with the national average. Ho w e v e r, t h e 2 0 1 3 average yield in Mindanao only reflected a 1% growth from 2009 when there was a higher cacao farm area of 7,830 hectares.
