Internet scams THE Bureau of Customs in Northern Mindanao warned the public against a marketing scam that utilized the internet, a customs official said. Acting deputy collector Uswaldo Pague, of the Bureau of Customs here, said that the would-be-victim usually received an email regarding a marketing plan that resembles that of a pyramiding scheme. He said that the email would solicit membership money of P 2,500 with a promise from the “upline member” to send a package containing gifts or money to the would-be-victim in exchange for recruits that would serve as the down line.

Road project SURIGAO City -- The Surigao Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Inc. (SCCI) continues its implementation of the Coordinating Road Investments project for local economic development and poverty reduction in the province of Surigao del Norte. SCCI Consultant Alice V. Euseña said during the Provincial Development Council meeting held recently here that since July 2012 the SCCI has implemented the coordinating road investments project under the supervision of The Asia Foundation (TAF) with financial support from the Agency for International Development (AusAID) under the Coalition for Change Program. “The project aims to facilitate the identification of priority road network and roads within the network of roads in Surigao del Norte, mobilize support and resources for identified priority road network and priority roads, and sustain innovations in decisionmaking and implementation in roads development,” she said.

Oro businessmen adopt measures to counter impact of power outage THE business community in Cagayan de Oro City has adopted measures to counter power outages in this seaport capital, an official of a business group here said on Tuesday. Efren Uy, President of the Cagayan de Oro Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Inc. (Oro Chamber), said that the lo cal business community would adopt the “voluntary curtailment” of power usage in order to avoid “rotating brownouts” here. He said that members of the Oro Chamber also agreed to utilize the “generator sets” for three to four hours during business days in order to minimize power usage in the city. T h e C E PA L C O owned Minergy provides 20-megawatt while the Solar Power produces 1-megawatt in addition to the 2-megawatt of CEPALCO’s hydropower plant on the Bubunawan river here, Marilyn Chaves, CEPALCO’s spokesperson said. She said that Cagayan de Oro will not suffer power outages as much as the other cities and provinces in Mindanao because of the backup power supply by Minergy, Solar Power, and mini-hydro power plant.
