Briefly Top trainee DAVAO City -- A Philippine representative was cited for excellent performance in the “Regional Training on Project Management” for BIMP-EAGA and IMT-GT held recently at the Universiti Sains Malaysia in Penang, Malaysia. Gemma Dagaas, development management officer IV of the Mindanao Development Authority (MinDA), received special recognition for ‘Best Project Proposal’ along with her five team members who presented during the training conducted by the Asian Development Bank (ADB) under its Advancing Regional Cooperation and Integration through the BIMP-EAGA and IMT-GT. BIMP-EAGA stands for Brunei Darussalam Indonesia Malaysia the Philippines East ASEAN Growth Area, while IMT-GT stands for Indonesia Malaysia Thailand Growth Area. The two sub-regional groupings were formed with the goals of promoting trade, investment, and tourism in less-developed states and provinces.

Globe cruise tourism SURIGAO City -- With the theme, “Stretching the Boundaries of Cruise Tourism,” the provincial government of Surigao del Norte was invited to attend the 2nd Edition of Global Cruise Tourism Conference and Exhibition (GCTCE 2015) which will take center-stage in Malaysia from August 7 to 10, this year. As a result of the market encounter in the World Travel Mart in London, England last November 2014, Provincial Tourism in-charge Arturo Cruje said that the province is among the list of potential cruise tourism destinations in the country. Early this year, a cruise ship with a capacity of almost 300 passengers visited Siargao, more particularly the Bucas Grande Islands and the municipality of General Luna which is home to World Surfing Cup, International Beach Volleyball and International Women’s Surfing Competition.

ORTHERN Mindanao’s economy has outperformed the country’s national average during the first quarter of this year, data from the region’s National Economic and Development Authority (NEDA) showed.

Clarete said all three economic sectors in Northern Mindanao grew within the first quarter of this year over that of the same period last year, Speaking during a media forum on Quarterly Regional Economic Situationer on Thursday last week, Clarete said the agriculture sector in the region went up by 1.6% from 0.6% during the first quarter of 2014, industry at

5.5% from 5.4% and services at 5.6 from 6.8%. “Though the growth in services sector is lower yet it is still a growth. For agriculture sector, we still have to record the effects of El Nino in the second quarter,” Clarete told the media forum participants. an uptrend in RE projects

DAVAO City -- Applications for renewable energy (RE) projects in Mindanao posted a 25.64 percent increase, showing a growing interest for clean energy investments in the island-region. The One Stop Facilitation and Monitoring C enter (OSFMC), which handles the fast tracking of pending RE projects in Mindanao received 59 new applications adding to a total of 290 applications for RE projects with a combined capacity of almost 3,000 megawatts (MW). In May this year, the center reported 231 applications with a combined capacity of 2,419.17 MW. The additional RE project applications will have a combined capacity of 578.92 MW if completed and fully operational. “The projects are spread across hydro, geothermal, solar, and biomass.
