Briefly Livestock MORE government attention to the Philippine livestock and poultry industry will be a big help to smallholder farmers and micro, small and medium-scale enterprises (MSMEs), and will boost the sector’s export potentials, according to a new report from a state-run think tank. Amid a slowly decreasing trend in the production value of agriculture, the livestock and poultry subsector “presents a glimmer of light in local agriculture,” projected to continuously grow in the next decades, said the report entitled “Review of High-Value Agriculture in the Philippines with Comprehensive Subsectoral Focus: Livestock Industries.” “Focus of development interventions in recent years [has] been on crops, particularly on the major grain staples. Shifting attention to more competitive and higher value commodities like livestock would do much in enhancing the livelihoods of smallholder farmers, as well as MSMEs within the sector,” said the paper published by the Philippine Institute for Development Studies.

MSMEs THE Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) focused its projects and programs in 2017 to the micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs) in the country, heeding the call of President Rodrigo Duterte to further boost the sector. This year, DTI kicked off its microfinancing program Pondo sa Pagbabago at Pag-asenso, or the P3, which aims to improve Filipinos’ access to financing facilities and avoid loan sharks like “5-6” lending scheme. Even without a formal budget allocated for the P3 alone, the administration funded about P1.0 billion worth of projects this year.

SHOWCASING the local beauties and various products of Misamis Oriental is among the highlights of the 4th annual Kuyamis Festival, marking the province’s 88th founding anniversary on Jan. 8-12. The Kuyamis Festival is a brainchild of Gov. Yevgeny Vincente Emano when he became the province’s chief executive in 2013. Prior to that, the event was then known as “Salo Tabo.” Emano said Kuyamis will have its grand opening Monday, although related activities have been ongoing, such as the Ms Kuyamis swimsuit competition held at a beach resort in Jasaan town last Dec. 28. “Our people, as usual, will be in high spirits again as we celebrate this very big event in our province,” the governor said in a statement. beauties/PAGE 11

GOVERNMENT agencies have started extending various aid packages to returning residents in Marawi City as part of the broader rehabilitation plan for the warravaged city. To help the residents with immediate concerns, such as land issues and putting food on the table, the Department of Agrarian Reform-10 (DAR-10) said it has created a project management team for Task Force Bangon Marawi (TFBM). DA R- 1 0 D i r e c t o r Fa i s a r Mambuay said the Convergence Project Management Team (CPMT) is comprised of government line agencies, non-gover nment a l
organizations, the United NationWorld Food Project (UN-WFP) and United Nation-Food and Agriculture Organization (UN-FAO). CPMT would assist TFBM in rebuilding Marawi and restore normalcy among its residents, Mambuay said. He said the CPMT has already identified five barangays under the agency’s Agrarian Reform Community (ARC) that would be provided with immediate help and assistance. Mambuay has also assured the farmers in Marawi that they are still the legal owners of their lands since the government can still validate residents/PAGE 11
