Food security ISABELA City -- Food security remains to be one of the top concerns of the provincial government of Basilan. As an island province surrounded by bodies of water, the island is blessed with natural resources both on land and seas. However, recent developments reveal that climate change, population explosion, and the ongoing industrialization and technological development have depleted much of the earth’s natural resources. And this has also affected the island. Production and domestication of food is threatened by strong winds, typhoons, flooding, and landslides because of extreme weather events brought about by climate change, which is also attributed to increased human activity.

MALAYBALAY City -- Bukidnon tourism should go beyond the annual Kaamulan and ziplines in pursuit of tourism goals in 2018, according to stakeholders in their responses to “Bukidnon 2018: Public Outlook Series initiative.” Reynaldo Gil Lomarda, head of Greenminds, Inc., said it is time to focus more on natural and cultural tourism because it is the strength of

the province. He said the province’s Kaamulan, a cultural festival, which he said is already commercialized, happens only once a year. The provincial government must promote tourism also beyond the festival because Bukidnon is known for its tribes, which should have tourist attractions before and after the festival. tourism/PAGE 11

ONE way to cope with the government’s public utility vehicle (PUV) modernization program is for drivers to become members of transport cooperatives. This was the advice of Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory

Board-Region 10 (LTFRB-10) Director Aminoden Guro for PUV drivers, many of whom expressed fears of economic displacement amid the government’s heightened effort to modernize the country’s transport sector. Once the government

implements the PUV modernization program starting in 2021, Guro said transport cooperatives can avail of loan facilities to enable their members to buy e-jeepneys and solar jeepneys. Guro said that based on LTFRB-10 records, half of drivers/PAGE 11
