By MARK FRANCISCO, Staff Writer
he Bureau of Customs is expecting President Aquino to sign into law the Customs Modernization and Tariff Act next week that would make the country’s procedures at par with global best practices.
Customs Commissioner Alberto Lina on Wednesday said that it is high time for the law to come into fruition. The bill sailed through Congress for almost eight years, surpassing the reig n of four Customs
commissioners, including Lina, who visited northern Mindanao’s three major ports, said.. The Customs Modernization and Tariff Act would put the country’s custom procedures globally
competitive. Specifically, it would make the Philippines abide by Revised Kyoto C onvention, which was adopted unanimously by the World Customs Organization in 2006. Adopting digitalization to fast track trade facilitation, the Customs Modernization and Tariff Act would compel the BOC to adapt modern electronic processing systems to make transactions faster, more effective, more convenient and less prone to corruption. customs/PAGE 11 CONFERMENT.
