Briefly Agri-research DAVAO City -- The Davao Region Upland Agriculture Research Station (DARUARS) will soon convert its 429-hectare property into an agro eco-tourism area. This was announced by Department of Agriculture (DA) 1I Assistant Regional Director for Research and Regulations Angelina Pancho, saying the construction of the R&D building in the area starts the many developments in the area. She said part of the planned development includes: Sloping agricultural land technology (SALT), establishment of building for goat production and development of creeks for fish production. “This [429-hectare property] has a big potential to become an agro eco-tourism area. We can conduct research about climate resilient crops here and more buildings that can help the farmers as well as the IPs,” Pancho said Friday.

Agriproductivity THE country needs to undertake policies to accelerate productivity growth in the long run across all sectors especially in agriculture, which remains a key sector for inclusive growth and poverty alleviation, according to the Philippine Institute for Development Studies (PIDS). PIDS senior research fellow Roehlano Briones identified elements for boosting total factor productivity (TFP) growth, which are research and development (R&D), innovation, adoption of technology, improved practices and systems, and public goods such as transport infrastructure. “…It suffices to say that TFP is generally not increased by price support policies for agriculture, nor by subsidies on private goods, contrary to the current thrust of agricultural policy,” he said in a discussion paper titled “Outlook for the Philippine Economy and AgroIndustry to 2030: The Role of Productivity Growth”.

DA, PRDP program hopes to cut waste in Sulu mangosteen crop By CARMELITO Q. FRANCISCO, Correspondent

DAVAO City — Sulu produced 850 tons of the high-value fruit mangosteen last year, but a big portion of that was wasted because farmers did not have the knowledge or means to market it outside the island province, according to Mercia S. Alli, the provincial

supervising agriculturist. Ms. Alli, who was among the participants in a recent training-workshop on market and value chain analysis conducted by the Department of Agriculture-Philippine Rural Development Project (DA-PRDP), said they are

aiming not to squander future crops. “With our study, we now have a picture of the whole flow of mangosteen from the farmers, producers end, up until market. A reliable data foundation which let us see the bigger picture of the commodity,” she said. program/PAGE 11

“We will not ask money (from government), that’s the last thing you ask from government,” Philippine Coffee Board, Inc. (PCB) President Pacita U. Juan said during the recent 10th Philippine Coffee Summit held here. The help that the industry needs, she added, is access to laboratory facilities for quality testing and improving yields. Ms. Juan said this proposal does not require the passage of a law as public academic institutions already have the facilities and human resources that can access/PAGE 11
