P5 COLA increase DAVAO City -- Labor and Employment director Atty. Jeoffrey Suyao of Davao Region announced the effectivity of the P5 cost of living allowance (Cola) for all minimum-wage workers on Monday. He said the new Cola is part of the second tranche of minimum wage adjustment due to the implementation of the Wage Order No. 18 in June 1 raising the pay to P312 for non-agriculture and P302 for the agriculture sector, P312 for service or retail merchandise employing ten or more workers and P281 for those employing less that ten workers. Suyao said the new cola adjustment will adjust the pay to P317 per day for non-agricultural sector, P307 per day for the agricultural sector, service or retail industries employing ten or more workers at P317 and P286 for those employing less than 10 employees.

Multimillion bridge BUTUAN City -- A massive bridge project of the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) in Surigao del Sur will soon be completed; its current accomplishment rate is 78%. This was disclosed by DPWHCaraga regional director Danilo E. Versola, citing the construction of P738-million Tago-Lapaz Bridge, a 12-span, 320 lineal meter bridge, connecting Barangay Poblacion, Tago, and Barangay La Paz in Bayabas. Versola said Secretary of Public Works and Highways Rogelio L. Singson ordered the DPWH-Caraga office to fast track the completion of the much delayed project which faced several stoppages in its phases of construction since 1991. Singson, when he assumed office as DPWH Secretary, ordered all the bridge projects taking years to complete be finished under the term of President Aquino. One classic example of these bridges is the Aluling Bridge in Cervantes, Ilocos Sur, which was conceptualized way back in 1978 with construction activities started in 1990. The bridge finally opened to traffic in March 2013.

WB scales up rural dev’t assistance for Mindanao THE World Bank Group is scaling up assistance for rural development and job creation in Mindanao in support of the peace process in the southern part of the country. In a statement, the World Bank said that it will support two new government projects this year, which have been allocated of about P14 billion. The projects, according to World Bank will boost community-driven

d e v e l o p m e nt p ro j e c t s , build rural infrastructure, and exp and liveli ho o d opportunities for farmers and fisher folk in Mindanao. “ The World Bank is scaling up support for rural development and job creation in the region by providing critical infrastructure and promoting private investment in agri-business,” Lillie Magdamo, World Bank operations officer, said.

The new financial support for Mindanao is under the World Bank’s country partnership strategy for the Philippines. The first project identified by the bank, costing P8.74 billion, is the National CommunityDriven Development Project (NCDDP), which is designed to empower poor communities to participate rural/PAGE 7
