Food safety DAVAO City – The Region-11 office of the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI11) reminded the residents here regarding the practice of some food processors using unregistered and noncompliant industrial grade food coloring dyes. The DTI-11 said that the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) learned from the tested 34 samples of food products collected by its inspectors in the National Capital Region (NCR) and in Region-7 for non-permissible colorants (NPC), wherein the samples were collected from ambulant vendors, public markets, groceries, and supermarkets. Out of the 34 products collected, three were found to contain NPC Rhodamine B, while five needed further tests to confirm the presence of NPC Sudan. Rachel S. Remitio, DTIDavao Region Consumer Welfare and Trade Regulation Division (CWTRD) chief, said that these coloring dyes should not flood the market.

Alsons seeks ERC’s nod on Dasureco supply deal

A UNIT of listed Alsons Consolidated Resources, Inc. and a power distributor in Davao del Sur have sought regulatory approval for their three-year electricity supply deal. In a joint petition dated Nov. 18, Alsons Energy Development Corp. (AEDC) and Davao del Sur Electric Cooperative, Inc. (DASURECO) asked the Energy Regulatory Commission to issue an order provisionally approving their agreement, and subsequently a decision to make the approval permanent. Under the power supply agreement (PSA) entered into by the two parties, AEDC will install, operate and maintain

a 15-megawatt (MW) diesel-fired power plant in Barangay Cogon in Digos City. “The term of supply and purchase under the PSA shall be for three years from the commencement of commercial operations,” the petition read. According to the petition, DASURECO’s power requirement averages 42 MW but its current total supply is only 27.92 MW. “Thus, there is a considerable average shortage of an estimated 14.1 MW,” the petition read, adding that the gap is expected to widen due to the steadily increasing power demand of DASURECO’s customers.
