11.9-MW bunker-fired power plant to rise in Koronadal City By Allen Sam V. Estabillo
G
ENERAL SANTOS CITY -- Distribution utility South Cotabato I Electric Cooperative (Socoteco I) is constructing an 11.9-megawatt (MW) bunker-fired power plant to augment the growing power requirements of industries and residential consumers in parts of South Cotabato and Sultan Kudarat provinces. Santiago Tudio, Socoteco 1 general manager, said Wednesday they have partnered with energy firm Supreme Power Corporation for the construction and operationalization of
an embedded power plant that will be run by modular generator sets. He said the construction of the plant will begin on Thursday in a property owned by the electric cooperative in Matulas, Barangay Paraiso in Koronadal City. “We’re targeting to complete the construction and eventually operate the plant by July,” he said in an interview. Citing their initial agreement with Supreme Power, he said the company will operate the plant for 15 years using imported generator sets from South Korea. He said the plant will directly

he Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA) will be conducting the January 2015 Labor Force Survey starting today, January 8, 2015 until the end of this month. According to Engr. Eddie Nasol, Interim Regional Director of PSA Region 10, this undertaking aims to provide a quantitative framework for the preparation of plans and formulation of policies affecting the labor market. More specifically, the survey is designed to provide statistics on levels and trends of employment, unemployment and underemployment for the
country, as a whole, and for each of the administrative regions, including provinces and key cities. Nasol is encouraging all sample households to cooperate with this survey and to give truthful answers to the interviewers. The interviewers are equipped with all necessary documents as well as proper identification cards. All information that will be obtained by the interviewers will be held strictly confidential as indicated in Republic Act 10625, or the Philippine Statistical Act of 2013 governing the secrecy rule for the survey answers.
stream its generated power to Socoteco 1, which serves Koronadal City, eight municipalities in South Cotabato and Lutayan town in Sultan Kudarat. “After 15 years, the power plant will be owned at no cost by the cooperative. We will assume full ownership and take charge with its operations,” he said. Details are not immediately available regarding Supreme Power, which is based in Metro Manila. A document posted at the Department of Energy’s website showed that it issued a “clearance for grid impact study” to the
company on May 19 last year. Tudio said they decided to deal for the building of an embedded bunker-fired power plant to address the continuing supply shortage in the Mindanao grid. He said the plant will serve as insurance in case the hydropower plants of the National Power Corporation (NPC) in Lanao del Norte and Bukidnon would experience supply shortages and when other power plants in Mindanao will bog down. He said they are anticipating a possible drought this year lasting three to four months that would drastically reduce the generating capacity of the
hydropower plants. Socoteco 1’s peak power requirement increased to as high as 36 MW this year from 33 MW a year ago. The cooperative mainly draws its supplies from the NPC and Aboitiz Power Corporation’s subsidiary Therma South Inc. It has a backup supply of 12 MW from a diesel-fired power plant operated by Mapalad Power Power Corporation (MPC), which is controlled by the Alcantara-owned Conal Holdings, and Aggreko Plc. in Barangay Morales in Koronadal City. Socoteco 1’s supply contract with MPC will end in 2016.(PNA)

Smart also announced that its network is ready for the expected surge in mobile data traffic in 2015, as the increasing affordability of data-hungry smartphones encouraged more Filipinos to snap up devices in the last few weeks of 2014. Over a fourth of Smart and Sun Cellular’s combined over 69 million subscribers are already using smartphones, helping drive a robust 112% increase in mobile data traffic within the network, equivalent to 27,000 terabytes worth of data exchanged from January to September 2014, compared with just 13,000 terabytes of data for the same period last year. “We can only expect these volumes to increase exponentially in the months ahead,” Lim added. Through the Smar t Free Internet promo, all 69 million Smart, Talk ‘N Text and Sun Cellular subscribers just need to register by texting FREE to 9999, to start using their data-enabled cellphones to access the Internet without data charges, for up to 30MB daily. It is available across all network platforms – from 2G to 3G to 4G speeds in the country. Smart continues to have the largest mobile network in the country today, with a total of 24,938 cellular/ broadband base stations, including 9,946 active 4G/ HSPA+/Long-Term Evolution (LTE) base stations, supported by more than 90,000 kilometers of fiberoptic cables around the
country. Fully modernized network “We have prepared and fully modernized and expanded our network for this uptrend, in terms of reach and availability. Beyond that, we are also accelerating our data capacity build-out, as part of our continuous efforts to future-proof our network in light of increased demands in mobile data for the coming months and years,” said Ramon Isberto, head of Public Affairs at Smart and PLDT. Smart and Sun Cellular’s parent company PLDT reported in November higher capex levels for 2014, projected to be approximately P34.5 billion, compared to an earlier projected number of P32 billion. This capex is expected to be carried over into 2015, given the market’s continued appetite for data services, as more Filipinos start using smartphones. According to the latest smartphone sales tracking report from Gartner, rele as ed in D ecemb er 2014, worldwide sales of smartphones grew 20 percent in the third quarter of 2014 – with much of the growth attributed to emerging markets in Asia and Africa. This mirrors Philippine data, showing smartphone sales in the country growing by about 22 percent in the same period, according to a report released in October 2014 by Singapore-based research firm GfK.
