Suzuki Unveils the All-new Celerio Suzuki, one of the leading makers of compact cars, launches its all-new Celerio, featuring an A+ compact build — a concept that steps up on the strengths and exceeds the limits of the A segment car by implementing the “small on the outside, big on the inside” idea. It sports the same dynamic and easy-to-maneuver design, while offering spacious room for passengers and relatively huge luggage capacity. Equipped with electric power steering and electronic-controlled door lock and windows, the new Celerio model also provides above-

standard safety and security features with its Anti-lock Brake System (ABS), dual airbags, collapsible steering column, side impact beams, Suzuki’s patented TECT design, as well as the high mount stop lamp and defogger. The all-new Celerio sports an improved K10B threecylinder engine that produces a maximum output of 67 hp @ 6,000 rpm and 90 Nm @3,500 rpm for excellent fuel efficiency to meet the practicality and sophisticated taste of modern Filipinos. Suzuki Philippines President Hiroshi Suzuki expresses, “We are very

excited to showcase our A+ compact design to the Filipino market. You will all be amazed with the architecture of this model, particularly its best-in-class luggage capacity, superb ease and comfort in driving, and outstanding fuel efficiency. We are confident that this allnew Suzuki Celerio will set a new standard for its kind.” The all-new Suzuki Celerio is now available in Suzuki outlets nationwide. Prices start at Php507,000 for manual transmission and Php542,000 for Continuously Variable Transmission (CVT).

Finally hitting public roads after its initial unveiling during the 2015 Manila International Auto Show last April, ten units of the all-new Mazda2 sub-compact sedan and hatchback were driven over more than 450-kilometers of fast straights and winding countryside roads in the provinces of Laguna, Quezon, Cavite and Batangas by the motoring press. “There’s no better way to communicate the above-class quality, design, dynamism and performance of our latest Mazda vehicle than by driving our cars the way they were meant to be driven,” says Berjaya Auto Philippines and Mazda Philippines president

and CEO Steven Tan. He adds, “The famed Viaje del Sol route around the provinces south of Manila not only offer a rich cultural and historical backdrop to any road trip but it also provides some of the most scenic and challenging roads that any driver will thoroughly enjoy. The all-new Mazda2 SKYACTIV not only provides the ideal platform for motorists to get from point A to point B, but it also allows them to enjoy getting there.” “We wanted the motoring press to experience the all-new Mazda2 SKYACTIV in varying degrees as it offers the Filipino consumer the full range of practical, everyday usability together with above-class

build quality and that unique Zoom-Zoom driving pleasure that only Mazda can deliver,” explains Tan. Three routes passing around the provinces of Laguna, Quezon, Cavite and Batangas were designed to give the motoring media varied experiences with the allnew Mazda2 SKYACTIV sedan and hatchback variants. The all-new Mazda2 SKYACTIV is the fourth generation of the nameplate and the second generation to be launched in the Philippines. Four variants of the Mazda2 are currently available in Mazda Philippines’s showrooms- the Mazda2 SKYACTIV R sedan, the Mazda2 SKYACTIV V sedan and hatchback, and the Mazda2 SKYACTIV S sedan.

While we are excited about the national political lineup, nothing is more thrilling than the prospects in the local political arena. In the past, we made presumptions of the possible candidates in the mayoral contest in Cagayan De Oro City. We also dissected the strength and weaknesses of the candidates - their chances of winning and losing. Thus, the names of Emano, Moreno, and Rodriguez were among the very popular contenders in the local politics. Based on a presumptive assessment, “Dongkoy” Emano, the former City Mayor, remains a very strong mayoral contender. Emano has a rating of winning the local mayoral contest at “9.5” in a scale of “10.” It is not surprising because with a stronghold of 56 barangays out of the city’s 80 barangays, Emano’s winning chances remains high. The incumbent Mayor Oscar Moreno enjoys a rating of “8” in a scale of “10.” Without a real politi-

ing promises, to have his running mate coming from any of the two allies. However, getting one as running mate from any of the two allies is not an assurance that Moreno could elude a roughshod political battle. Moreno should bear in mind that the burden of winning the mayoral contest lies in the performance of his administration. While the electorates might have elected Moreno to the city’s highest post to savor some kind of “political change,” the issues hounding his administration could lead to his downfall in the 2016 elections. Actually, many voters expressed the remorse of discarding Emano in the 2010 mayoral elections. After three years in office, the local electorates have started comparing the administration of Moreno and Emano. The local voters – the business groups, youths, ordinary citizens, and the deprived are now on a ‘rectification” campaign. Whatever that means, the Cagayanons

the criteria of the leadership in any countries. All these indicators are the language telling us clearly about any leaders we have in our regions. We can learn from their achievements for the nation. As the best people, none will be dragged into the same experience, especially bad one. We cannot get any lesson from the study of politics. It is difficult to get a chance to learn in the best university about leadership and politics. But, learning our surrounding and keeping our principle in life is the best way to get enlightened. In general, it is contemplation. Contemplation can be done by perceiving, not by seeing anything using our bear eyes. Contemplation can be done by keeping the principle in life that the past experience is still the

knows better. After all, one of the local traders mused that the 2016 election is a time to correct erroneous political decisions. There is the notion that everyone became victims of indecisions in the 2010 mayoral election. The electorates then promised to regain lost grounds. Whatever, the people of Cagayan De Oro are as excited as every one of the 2010 mayoral polls. However, majority of the local voters are wishing that the mayoral polls would not, once again, turnout into a “mayoral fools.” Obviously, these electorates are trying to impart something the mouth could not speak. It could be a cryptic message of frustrations, of remorse, and of discernment. Nevertheless, let us focus on the candidates – their credibility, sincerity, and performance (now and then) as basis for electing the right people who would run the affairs of the government. -0- Send comments/reaction: crisguardian@yahoo. com

best lesson for improving the next step of another life. Therefore, never regret when we have decided our choice. In that case, we need to contemplate. If we need a better change, we can do it by choosing the best choice. A leader is the same human being as we are. But, when we cannot keep our principle when giving our vote to the best one, we will live in the same symphony, with the same orchestra on the same stage. It is now the time to jump over on another new way of life. Be cognizant in selecting the candidate but still keeping our principle. The criteria are clear: no money politics, more infrastructure, and public trust. Keep all these in our mind. CAGAYAN de Oro City-One of the lawmakers accused with alleged graft, direct bribery, and “malversation” of public funds would seek redress in the Supreme Court to prohibit

the Ombudsman to hear the case. The National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) on Thursday filed criminal charges against the third batch of incumbent and former lawmakers, most of them identified with the administration, for alleged

involvement in the pork barrel fund scam. Rep. Rufus Rodriguez, of Cagayan De Oro City, who was among those charged with the anti-graft court, claimed that the Department of Justice (DOJ) violated his rights when it decided to file charges against them

in connection with the use of their pork barrel funds. In a text message to the Mindanao Daily News, Rodriguez said he would file a petition for “certiorari and prohibition” in the Supreme Court that would suspend the proceedings in the Ombudsman.

Bambi bares P144m completed projects SOME P144 million worth of completed projects bannered the infrastructure report of Gov. Bambi Emano during his annual state of the province address dubbed as “Taho Sa Katawhan”, at the provincial capitol grounds, Monday. Also in his report is the acquisition of some 27 new pieces of road construction equipment funded under a loan from the Development Bank of the Philippines. “Infrastructure programs will be our main focus next year these new pieces of equipment will play a significant role,” Gov. Emano said. The P103 million cost to build five (5) of the completed projects with a total length of 20.7 kilometers came from the general funds of the province.

These are the Awang-Tingalan provincial road in Opol town that costs some P71 million ; LaguindinganLourdes-Sungay provincial road of Laguindingan worth P14.7 million; Sugbongcogon-Kidampas provincial road of Sugbongcogon worth P9.6 million; Lagonglos-Umagos provincial road of Lagonglong town that costs P3.9 million, and the Stan Ana-Malitbog provincial road worth P3.5 million. On one hand, two of the six soon to be completed road projects are the Sta. Ana-Sta. Cruz-Malitbog provincial road of Tagoloan town, is already 86.5 percent completed at the cost of P3,5 million and the GimangpangAluna provincial road of Initao town which is already 75 percent completed at the cost of P9.9 million.

Emano said two innovations are mainly responsible for the significant performance of the engineering office in the pursuit of infrastructure development. “One is the creation of the Baragay Infrastructure Projects Office, the other is the barangay empowerment that we extended to the barangay officials giving them authority to identify, process and manage priority projects in their areas,” Gov. Emano added. Meanwhile, Gov. Emano also revealed that the 27 new equipment include two units of bulldozers; ten (10) units of dump trucks; six (6) units of graders; two units each of motor graders, compactors and backhoe; and one unit each of boom truck, prime mover and lower bed trailer. 4 local food exporters join SIAL 2015 in Manila Your Mindanao-wide Community Newspaper

FOUR local food exporters took part in the leading international food exhibition network, Salon International de I’Agroalimentaire (SIAL). SIAL started in Paris in 1964 and has now six major exhibits every year, targeting big markets or trade blocs, such as Europe, Brazil, China, Canada, Middle East and the newest and equally promising SIAL-ASEAN. The Philippines is honored to be once again the venue for the 2nd edition SIAL-ASEAN at the World Trade Center, Metro Manila last June 17-19, 2015,

said Ma. Eliza A. Pabillore, provincial director, DTI– Misamis Oriental. “Siezing this great opportunity, the Department of Trade and Industry facilitated the participation of B-G Fruits and Nut Manufacturing Corporation, producer of banana chips and virgin coconut oil; Linabu Agrarian Multi-Purpose Cooperative and Tropical Organic Harvest Philippine Corporation, who are both a manufacturer of coconut sugar; and Maharlika AgroMarine Ventures Corporation, a poultry integrator and producer of duck meat

and duck eggs. DTI shouldered the cost of booth and booth dress-up,” Pabillore said. Through the e vent, trade leads were established with Global Organic and Wellness Corporation and Ochiba Trading Corporation, which are interested in coconut sugar.

A Korean buyer, Bae Minsuk also took interest in the products of B-G Fruits and Nuts Manufacturing Corporation. "The Department of Trade and Industry-Misamis Oriental Provincial Office continues to support exporters in accessing international market thru busi-

ness matching, participating in trade fairs, organizing trade fairs, organizing outbound trade missions and a lot more," said Pabillore. This is the 2nd international trade event that DTI took part in. In the following months, the agency is expected to facilitate two more international trade fairs.

The first trade event is the Philippines Festival 2015 in Japan scheduled in September 19-20, 2015. The last one will be focused on fashion and home furnishings, which is the Manila FAME, slated on October 15-18, 2015, at the SMX Convention Center, Mall of Asia, Pasay City.

CAGAYAN de Oro City -- A historic local government unit sisterhood agreement between the Philippines and Somalia was signed between the Municipalities of Cabanglasan, Bukidnon, and Bal’ad in the Shabelle region. Held last July 27, this is

the first such relationship to be established by Somalia, not just with the Philippines, but with the entire Asia. Cabanglasan is the third foreign local government unit to partner with Somalia since 1991, the year the civil war started in Somalia. Recently, the country formal-

ized sister-city agreements with Istanbul, Turkey and Minneapolis, United States of America. This signing was graced by Georgia Consul Thelmo Cunanan Jr., who is also the president of the Philippines–Somalia Business and Friendship Association,

the private sector strategic partner of the Consulate of Somalia in the Philippines. The town of Cabanglasan is led by Mayor Renante V. Inocando, while the town of Bal’ad is led by Mayor Mohamed Mohamud Mohamed. The two mayors signed the Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) at the Cabanglasan Municipal Hall. Earlier, the Municipal Council of Cabanglasan, in a unanimous decision, authorized Mr. Inocando to enter into the agreement with Bal’ad with the objective of “developing close relations with other LGUs for the promotion and social and economic development of both towns.” “This is a great honor for Cabanglasan. We are the first municipality in the province of Bukidnon to enter into a sisterhood agreement with a counterpart in another country. TASC’s P565M Butuan Bulk Water Project to be completed this year By PAT SAMONTE Caraga Regional Editor

BUTUAN City -- The perennial problem of lack of water supply to meet the needs of some 200,000 population of this city will finally be solved by December, 2015 if projections are met. Based on an assessment by an inspection team of the on-going P565-million Public-Private Partnership (PPP) project for Water Treatment and Bulk Water Supply at Sitio Iyao, Barangay Anticala here as reported by Butuan City

Water District (BCWD) Senior Public Relations Officer Ramil Barquin, the Taguibo Aquatech Solutions Corporation (TASC) was “working double time to complete the construction of the facilities by December, this year.” According to Barquin, the inspection was conducted recently by BCWD General Manager Anselmo Sang Tian, Assistant General Manager George Guduyo and some board members, and showed that work on the sabo dam was 58 percent complete and 98 percent for the sand filtration facility. The other members of the

inspection team were board chairman Atty. Roldan Torralba, and board members Crispin Young, Leah Mendoza, Dr. Juanito Lao, and Dr, Estacio Claudio. Barquin said that should the project be completed this year, “the recurrence of water supply interruption during rainy days and low volume of water during long drought will ultimately be solved.” The project is the result of the Joint Venture Agreement (JVA) between BCWD and TwinPeak Hydro Resources Corporation in consortium with Equi-Parco See project, page A11

Samal Is. won’t protect Davao City from tsunami – Phivolcs DAVAO City––Samal Island won’t serve as a buffer for this city in case a tsunami occurs, an official of the Philippine Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) Davao said on Friday. Phivolcs-Davao research specialist Desiderio P. Cabanlit said that based on a simulation, the result may even be worse as water coming from behind Samal would pass through both sides of the island and form bigger waves as they converge at a certain point. On April 15, 1984, a tsunami inundated Sigaboy, Davao Oriental after an 8.3-magnitude earthquake struck. Cabanlit said if a quake of the same intensity occurs at sea nearby, it will only take 30 minutes for a tsunami to reach the shores Chidren bathe in a flooded village in Datu Salibo, Maguindanao. ATU SALIBO, Maguindanao-Close to 12,000 individuals were affected by floods in nine Maguindanao towns as a result of torrential rains brought about by InterTropical Convergence Zone the past week, but no displacements were reported, disaster response officials said Sunday.

of the city. He said his calculation showed the waves would be four meters high and reach 500 meters inland. Aside from tsunami, which could happen if a strong quake occurs at sea, a tremor may cause liquefaction, fires and landslides. A study, “Fault Distribution, Segmentation, and Earthquake Generation Potential of the Philippine Fault Zone in Eastern Mindanao,” found out that the Davao Oriental and Compostela Valley are at risk of getting hit by a strong earthquake based on the recurrence time. In Davao Oriental, the study singled out the popular tourist destination Mati, the provincial capital. “There’s a big possibility that the next strong earthquake will hit in these areas,”

Cabanlit said in Cebuano. The two provinces lie along a 320-kilometer fault line that stretches from Surigao to Compostela Valley. This fault line is part of a 1,200-km Philippine fault zone, from Luzon down to Mindanao. Cabanlit said the fault line cannot be seen from plain view that a pool of specialists from Phivolcs had to do trenching since 2007 to know how many cracks there are beneath the surface. These cracks, some of which are left unrecorded over time, allow the scientists to establish time intervals between the movements of the fault. “With the trending, we can estimate when the next strong quake is happening,” he said.

A 7.2-magnitude quake jolted Monkayo in 1893 and it has not recurred since. Major quakes have recurrence time. The West Valley Marikina Fault, which cuts across Metro Manila, can trigger landslides once it moves and results in the “Big One”, a 7-magnitude quake that is calculated to kill thousands of people. At an average, Davao Region experiences five unfelt earthquakes a day. “These only prove that we have an active fault line,” Cabanlit said. Phivolcs has put up unmanned stations to monitor the earthquakes. These are located in Don Marcelino in Davao del Sur, Valencia City in Bukidnon, and Mati in Davao Oriental. Antonio L. Two towns still flooded

The Office of Civil Defense and the Humanitarian Emergency Action and Response Team (HEART) in the Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (ARMM), said nine towns of Maguindanao were severely affected but only two towns – Datu Salibo and Mamasapano — remain flooded as of Sunday.

and then we moved here,” Guiamel said as she prepared food using a makeshift stove by the roadside. Her children were swimming nearby. Sukarno Zaylon, a resident, was fixing a wooden

bridge in waist deep waters toward his home. Even Army detachments were not spared in Datu Salibo as the military compound was virtually turned into a small river. Across the street were

motorists washing vehicles while children swam nearby. For the young, the long and winding road had become their huge swimming pool unmindful of the possible diseases borne by the floodwaters.

“Sanay na yan sila (they are used to it),” said Zailon of the children enjoying the floodwaters with “baon” (food) like in a picnic. The ARMM-HEART said no fatality was reported as a result of the flood.

“Residents stayed in their homes during the floods which eventually subsided, so there was no displacement,” Myrna Jo Henry, spokesperson for ARMM-HEART, said. Only the towns of Datu Salibo and Mamasapano, both in Maguindanao remained flooded after the Kabulnan river overflowed Thursday, she said. In the Datu Salibo-Datu

Water level in interior villages of Datu Salibo reached as high as neck and chest level, said Badria Guiamel, who brought her family to the roadside of Datu Salibo-Datu Piang highway. “My house was submerged by floods. Every August month of the year, schools nationwide commemorate the importance of Filipino as national language. hold then. During this month, schools organize events in coordination with the celebration such as conducting contests on Balagtasan, creative writing, essay writing, poem writing, and many others. It is not also limited in that; they also hold events that promote Filipino nationalism such as barrio games, cultural presentation and performing of folk dances. This is to promote the value and use of Filipino language

among students and impart to them that embarking its importance is part of a Filipino citizen’s identity. Department of Education issued a memorandum for 2015 celebration ordering all bureau and region directors, division superintendents and private and public school heads to ensure the implementation of activities in line. For this year, the celebration is centered on the theme, “Filipino: Wika ng Pambansang Kaunlaran.” There are also four themes

provided that would be basis on the kind of activities to be arranged in a certain week of the month. These themes are Filipino: Wika ng Kaunlarang Pangkultura, Filipino: Wika ng Kaunlarang Pangekonomiya, Filipino: Wika ng Kaunlarang Panlipunan and Filipino: Wika ng Kaunlarang Panteknolohiya. The nationwide implementation is being spearheaded by Komisyon ng Wikang Filipino (KWF).

Teacher’s Views

EDUCATION AS TWO-WAY PROCESS ByTeresita G. Pamisa Dangcagan Central Elementary School Dangcagan, Bukidnon

The method of teaching has set a lot of teaching strategy to develop the leaning skills of the students. There are variations on how a student is learning and it should be taken with great attention. But for most, a two way process or teacher-student oriented kind of teaching has greatly resulted to a positive learning experience for some. Te a c h e r - c e n t e r e d learning has the teacher at its center in an active role and students in a passive, receptive role. Teaching-centered (also called Lecture method of teaching) is one of the most widely used in teaching and learning process. Lecture method is done by way of delivering course materials to students directly or by way of oral. This method is highly practical and efficient for the provision of teaching material and has many learners. While studentcentered learning (or student-centered learning; also called child-centered learning) is an approach to education focusing on the needs of the students, rather than those of others involved in the educational process, such

as teachers and administrators. Student-centered learning is focused on the student’s needs, abilities, interests, and learning styles with the teacher as a facilitator of learning. This classroom teaching method acknowledges student voice as central to the learning experience for every learner. How did education become a two way process? Learning is a twoway process. It has to be communicative and interactive at every stage – both inside and outside the classroom. A teacher must be open to all signals from her students; he/she must encourage students and build a child-centered approach. A teacher must not come to the classroom to teach what she knows, but to teach what students do not know. Students still look up to a good teacher and trust him/ her. If a teacher is good, children will automatically respect him. As the saying goes, by teaching you will learn and by learning you will teach. Thus, it is highly encouraged for teachers to use this kind of process in teaching to equip more students for global competitiveness.

Why is Education considered by Filipinos as one of the basic needs? By Lindo M. Cayadong, Ph.D Senior Education Program Specialist-Planning and Research Department of Education Division of Misamis Oriental 9000 Cagayan de Oro City

With the continuous demands for improvement and getting away from poverty, the need for quality education has become a need for Filipinos. Having this perspective, Filipinos considered it as a basic need. Importance of education is undeniable. It is acknowledged as a universal right. Education plays a vital role in the development of a person. Only educated leaders and nation builders take the nation to the heights of development. Education develops our total being. It helps us understand and the nature, the environment where we live in. Education is a built-in asset where no one can steal it from you. We need education for

national progress. Make equal education for all. Education is necessary for development. Apparently, the love for education has already been established in every Filipino homes. In turn, school managers, policy makers and curriculum developers have been utilizing this idea in designing projects and programs in order to become parallel to what Filipinos dream of the Philippine education. Through education, we, Filipinos must be effective catalysts of change for the best we can in every workplace where we are. May the every effort that Deped provide become the inspiration to propel to greater heights. Let us be proud enough that we are educated Filipinos..

The Early Childhood Care Development Checklist By William D. Caballero Head Teacher – II / District Kindergarten Coordinator

Department of Education is pushing for improved learning through making sure that children are prepared and has been equipped with basics before recommending them to the next level. Thus, conduct of assessment and use of proper tools are important to determine the true status of the children. For example is the Early Childhood and Care Development (ECCD) Checklist. This checklist is very

important in order to determine the child’s capacity to learn, and what are the things he has to learn. In line, Department has issued an addendum to its Order No. 1, s. 2015 that pertains to January 24, 2015 as Commencement of Early Registration for school year 2015-2016. In this document, the importance of entrance age in Kindergarten was stressed. Children who will turn five years old on or before October 31, 2015

must show completion of Early Childhood Education. Moreover, there is a need for school teachers or head to assess their readiness to take Kindergarten education through using development tools, such as the Early Childhood and Care Development (ECCD) Checklist. This checklist will be used by an examiner while interviewing the parents or caregivers, and as well as the children. During the interview, examiners should ensure that interviewees are informed that there

are no right and wrong answers to ensure that the data gathered are true. Examinees should also be honest and answer questions on their own to attain similar result. For simple things like this, accuracy and precision should be assured in order for next and more important matters to come in smooth flow, such as producing children that are well-equipped at the end, because they were properly determined or identified.

Literature Teaching: Shaping Community of 21st Century By Poley M. Tayong, Ed.D. Calabayan National High School

Literature is a term used to describe written or spoken material. An Education page said that Literature represents a language, people, tradition. Literature introduces entities to new worlds of experience. People read products of Literature because they enjoy the comedies and the tragedies of poems, stories, and plays. People may even grow

and evolve through literary journey with books. Through literature, people could also be informed more about, for one, their culture. Culture is a way of life, in terms of behaviors, beliefs and values. It is an important part of a nation, race or ethnic group or simply, group of people. Knowing about his culture is also one of the duties and responsibilities

Empowering the IPs By Diosmary R. Sulapas, La Trinidad Integrated School, Bonbon, Butuan City

The Indigenous People (IP) of the Philippines are considered minorities. Despite of their small number the Philippine Republic gives importance to them. In a small baranggay of a city in the island of Mindanao, Philippines called Barangay Bonbon, Butuan City there resided the Manobo Indigenous People’s Group who were the remnants of the tribe of Datu Toribio Talibong Sr, the leader of the Council of Mayapay. One of his heir is recognized by Deped as the

Chieftain in Barangay Bonbon. He is Datu Makatondag and his wife bai Anahaw. According to this new generation head of the Manobo tribe of Bonbon, there are 69 pupils and students enroled in two schools in Bonbon. 12 Day Care and Elementary in Matin-ao Elementary School and 57 Day Care, Elementary and High School pupils and students combined in la Trinidad Integrated School. The above number is few compared to 230 pupils enrolled in Matin-ao

of a member of a society. It is one role that he has to serve. It is important for him to learn and dig the evolution of things in his society, because after all, it is the same to digging his own roots that define him for who he is and learning and deciding from it, and thus shaping him. Through reading the “Then and Now,” culture will be appreciated. Literature is also about gaining appreciation of someone’s identity

and shaping a society or community. Thus, it is important that it should be taught in schools, especially in this century where things mostly come and go. Literature should remain and preserved in order for future generations to appreciate the beauty of the past and embrace the good things that will remind them of who they are and shape them for who they should be.

Elementary School, and 900 pupils and students in La Trinidad Integrated School. Because of being a minority they are generaly ashamed to tell even when they are asked that they are members of the Manobo Tribe who happily dwell in barangay Bonbon. The IPs are believed to be the people who protected the environment of our Mother Earth. In fact the Tribal Coalition of Mindanao wrote the wryth of Kalikasan because of their too much concern of the degrading ecosystem brought about by illegal logging, illegal mining, and kaingin system of farming. They fight in the

court to gain control of these illegal trasactions in order to protect the land of Mindanao from denudation brought about by the 3 main factors just mentioned. The Tribal Coalition of Mindanao are then the environment fighters. Despite of the fact that only very few of them have gone to college and finished their education. Viva to the minority heroes of Mindanao! Viva to your heirs who will follow your footsteps in conserving Mindanao forest! The Mighty God who made the Space Ship Earth is indeed gloried by your spirit!

Teaching Mathematics Fun and Easy through WALL By Lizza Claire Sab-a

It is a fact that students have struggled with understanding mathematical concepts. Mathematics has always been one of the subjects that students disliked especially when problem solving and related tasks are discussed. This is because students did not master most of the basic skills in Math and that they tend to forget the basic concepts needed in the applications of higher Mathematics. With the implementation of K to 12 Basic Education Curriculum, students are expected to adapt, learn and master the basic skills and concepts to address the emerging advancements of learning and to make their life competitive and skilled.

To help students cope with the need of the new curriculum, Project WALL of Mathematics plays a vital role. WALL of Mathematics means Winning And Learning Lots of Mathematics. This innovation aims to help students recall, exercise and master the basic concepts and basic skills they have learned and will be learning in Math. With this, students shall be able to relate and use the things they will learn from the project to their present lesson in Math. Students will be able to have fun while learning and eventually, they will be enthusiastic to study Mathematics. One of the primary goals of this innovation is to change the students’ attitudes towards Math, giving them more self-confidence and show-

ing them that Math can be fun, playful and exciting all at the same time. Questions about Mathematics are to be posted on the bulletin boards in each grade level. The answers to each question will be written in a sheet of paper provided by the Math Club officers. Every flag ceremony a winner will be drawn from each grade level. The winners will receive a prize. The operating expenses and prizes given to the winners will be joint cooperation of the stakeholders and the Mathematics Club Officers and advisers. With the reinforcement they will receive for giving the correct answer to the posted questions daily, students will be able to have fun while learning and eventually, they will become enthusiastic

to study Mathematics. Consequently, it will not be difficult for the students to pass the subject. In order for all students to learn and understand Mathematics, it is important for them to be involved and engaged in the learning process. This is something that should be continued to combat in the teaching practice. Teachers should persistently plan the lessons while thinking about how they can involve and engage the students in every part of the lesson. Students who naturally love Math, often are the more proficient and confident Math students. They are also those who are always enthusiastic about the math they are exploring, no matter what the lesson requires.

Philippines and Asia. We are looking forward to working with our brothers and sisters in Bal’ad,” said Mayor Inocando. For his part, Mayor Mohamud, in expressing his gratitude and enthusiasm, said: “The people of Bal’ad greatly appreciate the hand of friendship extended to us by Filipinos. It is hope that springs from the purity of hearts of a kind and generous people.” The MOU contains a declaration of common shared values and a commitment to cooperate and share best practices in the fields of agriculture and trade, environment protection, tourism, technology, and community development. “This is a very historic achievement. We would like to thank Mayor Inocando for partnering with Bal’ad in this undertaking,” said Consul Cunanan. “Somalia has gone through plenty of unrest in the last two decades. But the situation has improved tremendously. This Sister-LGU relationship heralds the normalization of the country’s international relationships and its place in the community of nations,” Cunanan added. The development of Philippines–Somalia relations was pioneered by Cunanan Jr. through the Philippines–Somalia Business and Friendship Association (PSBFA), which he established in 2003. The aim of the organization is to develop socio-economic and cultural ties between the Republic of the Philippines and the Federal Republic of Somalia. Since 2003, numerous activities have been carried out to bring the two countries closer together. The PSBFA, under the leadership of Consul Cunanan and in its vital role as a strategic economic, cultural, and media partner of the Somali consulate and government, has bridged the gap in the

relations between the two countries by facilitating high-level contacts in the private and public sectors and promoting investments in the Horn of Africa. To date, the PSBFA has brought several companies to Somalia to explore business and investment opportunities. These include, among others, Philippine multinational corporation International Container Terminal Services, Inc. Other initiatives include academic and cultural agreements with institutions, like Mindanao State University in Marawi City and Xavier University in Cagayan de Oro. In 2012, the Government of the Federal Republic of Somalia established the consulate in Taguig City, Metro Manila, to further develop ties with the Philippines and Asia. The consulate is headed by Consul Manuela Alexandra Arroyo. Elipe currently sits as one of the councilors for the second district. Lawyer James Judith, who ran and lost as candidate for councilor in the same district that Elipe formerly belonged, argued that it is stipulated in Section 39 of the Local Government Code (Republic Act 7160) that an elected official must be a resident in the district that he or she represents. In a 12-page document lodged before the Regional Trial Court (RTC) in Cagayan de Oro City last August 6, Judith is asking the court to disqualify Elipe from continually holding office as councilor because of the argument that the former presented above. The court has yet to hear the petition. It is widely believed that Elipe, who could not anymore run for the same position, transferred his residency to barangay Carmen so he could challenge the congressional seat of Rep. Rolando Uy. Incidentally, the Elipe family business is located in that barangay whose bailiwick belongs to Uy.

having its own toilet. Pagatpat Elementar y School principal Jinnefer Espina welcomed the addition of the schoolbuilding to her fold, saying this would eradicate the holding of emergency classes there. With a population of around 1,300 students and 28 teachers, Pagatpat Elementary School was forced to hold classes in the field during shady days and in the covered court during sunny and rainy days to cope with the classroom shortage. “Our population is increasing each year because barangay Pagatpat is marked as a relocation site,” Espina said, referring to the barangay as the new home for people who were rendered homeless due to calamities and squatter demolitions. The new schoolbuilding also happens to stand side by side with another new schoolbuilding inaugurated earlier for Pagatpat National High School with only a tenfoot wall separating them. Mayor Oscar Moreno emphasized the need for elementary students to have a comfortable place for education, saying that he himself was a product of the public school system. “I will look forward to the future hoping that a graduate of Pagatpat Elementary School will become a successful engineer someday… will become a bar topnotcher someday…will become a cum laude someday,” Moreno said. City engineer Rolando Pacuribot, who noticed that the sites of both Pagatpat

Elementary School and Pagatpat National High School are low lying, vowed to construct a comprehensive drainage system to eradicate flooding woes. Under the Moreno administration and with the aid of the Cagayan de Oro City Schools Division led by superintendent Elena Borcillo, schoolbuilding constructions are mushrooming. The latest schoolbuilding that was inaugurated last Thursday was the 21st since Moreno assumed office in 2013. Earlier this year, the mayor received an Education Champion award from Secretary Armin Luistro.

She said in one occasion, the city accountant, city budget officer and city treasurer were invited to answer some queries, and they were asked what happened to the 2014 clothing allowance. According to Councilor Nadya, the city accountant said it was already in the accounts payable of the books of City Hall. POLO SHIRT The councilor said her secretary only received one polo shirt. She said even if it costs P1,000, which she doubts, there should still be a balance of P4,000. Not all employees received the polo shirt, she added. “Ang problema pa gyud kay dili tanan empleyado sa city hall nakadawat ani … nay uban empleyado wala pa nakadawat ani nga polo shirt na uniform nga ilang tawag. Councilor Annie Daba said the sizes given were small and the polo shirts could not be used. Instructional Leadership: A Key for Better Performance By RHEA KRISTINE J. GULDBOG

I N S T RU C T I O NA L leadership is a critical aspect of school leadership. The work of instructional leaders is to ensure that every student receives the highest quality instruction each day. Doing so requires that instructional leaders lead for the improvement of the quality of teaching and for the improvement of student learning. Instructional leadership is learning-focused, learning for both the students and adults as well. Herein, learning is measured through improvement in instruction and in the quality of student learning. Instructional leadership in a basic education school structure is usually led by the principal. For it to work, a culture of diligence must prevail in that school

for the constant improvement of the instructional material. Moreover, instructional leadership addresses the cultural, linguistic, socioeconomic and learning diversity in the school community. The following are practical actions that can be achieved in instructional leadership in the Philippine setting: teachers must constantly talk among each other on how to improve the syllabus handed out to them and if there is a need to introduce complementary materials. Teachers must observe each other in their teaching practices and once critiquing is done, the recipient teacher must be professional enough not to be offended and take it as a room for improvement.

Contractors are normally penalized when they do not deliver on time, he added. “ Ng a n o n g w a l a p a madeliver ang uniform?, “ he asked, adding that it was already considered an expense on the part of the city government . “P w e d e b a d i ay t a mobayad nga wala pa diha?” he added. PROBE For his part, Councilor Teodulfo Lao said the matter should be submitted for investigation. He s aid an inquir y should be made with persons responsible for the procurement so that questions regarding bidding procedures can be answered. “I myself want to know if the Procurement Act was followed,” Lao stressed. Councilor Zaldy Ocon called for a probe on the matter. He said those who are involved should be investigated. Meanwhile, Councilor Lourdes Candy Darimbang inquired if there was a consultation made with various divisions and department heads relative to the decision of giving a uniform or clothing allowance to city government employees. She also supported an investigation in aid of legislation, on the clothing allowance, which the employees should have received last year. The Power

The resurgence of the fungal disease, which has b e e n d or m ant for t h e past 50 years, threatened to wipe out plantations and endangered the biggest export of the Davao region. Tete-a-tete with a CDO beauty By ARJAY S. FELICILDA, Asst Editor

She walked into my favorite coffee shop one day. Dressed casually in shorts and sneakers, it was difficult to not glance her way. With long jet-black hair and towering over her friends at five feet nine inches, Dylanna Bax has piqued the interest of many in the city (including myself ) when she joined the Miss Cagayan de Oro pageant with a goal to inspire and be heard. The earth must have titled in its axis when she relented to my invitation for a short interview. She ordered her usual milk tea and we chat. With an easy playfulness, and good-natured impertinence, Dylanna speaks of the Miss CDO pageant as one of the most challenging things she’s

ever done. “I feel like a giraffe among gazelles,” she says over and over, and laughs at herself saying, “I am stiff as a tree. My body doesn’t contort certain ways...I am way out of my comfort zone. But here I am, learning its tricks and traditions.” For a second, I think, how can this Magna Cum Laude from Liceo de Cagayan lack confidence? Is she then joining this pageant looking to gain more confidence, like most beauty queen hopefuls? Dylanna looks at me and smiles. She must have read what I was thinking because with wit and grace in her speech, she answers, “I overcome my utter lack of confidence because this isn’t about me.”

Beauty pageants are a public spectacle, and Miss Bax recognizes that. As she said once during the Miss CDO Press Conference, “Beauty pageants capture the collective interest of the people.” She finished that thought across from me on that day at the coffee shop, “One of the best platforms to freely express your thoughts and convictions while at the same time inspiring and influencing minds is the pageant stage.” Dylanna feeds her motivation off of what she recognizes as an opportunity to be heard. On her Facebook page, Dylanna writes, “Christians are the light of the world and the salt of the Earth. I think becoming a beauty queen will allow me to reach out to more people...I was not saved to be silent.” What exactly does

Miss Bax want to share? Part of her advocacy is education, animal welfare, social security, employment, and environmental preservation, but most of all she hopes to convey a message of boldness, moral uprightness, resilience, and compassion. “The Filipino people are blessed with so many rich resources--including each other. And yet we lose sight of that as we are plagued with poverty, calamity, and rampant corruption in our country. I am not saying that I will fix all of these issues. But I do think that there are better ways to protest, cope and overcome. Central to that is our faith.” Dylanna Bax is an idealistic realist. But she knows what she has gotten herself into, and she knows what she can bring out of it. To Miss Bax,

I want to say in her own humor, if there’s anything I know about giraffes, it’s that they definitely reach great heights.
