Perfect days, perfect airlines wbLuyZ w`b, wbLuyZ GqvijvBÝ Welcome 2

abroad. We are delighted to have you here at Biman Bangladesh Airlines. There is nothing like having you on board. We take pride in announcing that Biman just concluded the Annual Extravaganza of hosting the holy journeys of 54,000 pilgrims to and from the holy land of Saudi Arabia on some 300 flights (both ways) mounted under a special programme. It all went well and the airline could earn sizeable amount of revenue from the venture. At Biman, we are committed to being progressive and thinking long-term. The year 2015 happens to be another red-letter year for Biman as the airline takes delivery of two new Boeing 737/800 aircraft respectively in November and December. The aircraft will fly mostly to regional routes enabling Biman to offer more frequencies to its domestic points presently being hindered due to aircraft constraint (only 02 Dash Q 400). It’s also a busy time for Biman as the year 2016 is declared Tourism Year by the Bangladesh Government. The airline will exert its all-out efforts in order to make it a success; Biman aspires to open more and more destinations in 2016 with added service on the ground and in the air. November-December is also a time of the year when you would love travelling to Bangladesh. A huge number of foreign tourists every year flock to the great estuarine jungle of Sunderbans in search of the Big Cat. Keeping that in mind, Biman has already started preparing against their coming to this evergreen beautiful land of Bangladesh. We are constantly looking for ways to improve our passengers’ travel experience. On behalf of all the employees working with Biman, thank you for flying with us.

FESTIVAL Deepavali

Celebrated by Hindus across the world to mark the triumph of good over evil and light over darkness, the symbolism of Deepavali is aptly summed up in the simple act of lighting an oil lamp. They turn their homes into enclaves of warm golden light even as they offer prayers, exchange gifts and share sweetmeats with each other. When: November 11

No visit to Rome is complete without having seen its magnificent Colosseum, a vast amphitheatre with seating for 55,000 that was designed as a horse racing circuit and arena for animal fighting and gladiatorial battles. Its name is believed to have come from Nero’s enormous statue of Colossus that stood close by. Built of concrete and stone, it is the largest amphitheatre ever built and is considered one of the greatest works of architecture and engineering.

Although in the 21st century it stays partially ruined because of damage caused by devastating earthquakes and stone-robbers, the Colosseum is an iconic symbol of Imperial Rome.

The Pantheon

The Pantheon is one of the great spiritual buildings of the world. It was built as a Roman temple and later consecrated as a Catholic Church. Its monumental porch originally faced a rectangular colonnaded temple courtyard and now enfronts the smaller Piazza della Rotonda. Through great bronze doors, one enters one great circular room. The interior volume is a cylinder above which rises the hemispherical dome. Opposite the door is a recessed semicircular apse, and on each side are three additional recesses, alternately rectangular and semicircular, separated from the space under the dome by paired monolithic columns. The only natural light enters through an unglazed

Fast Facts

Rome is known as the ‘Eternal city’ and also ‘Caput Mundi’, coming from Latin and meaning capital of the world. Rome became the capital city of a unified Italy in 1870 after taking the title from Florence. Modern Rome has 280 fountains and more than 900 churches.

NOV - DEC 2015

Trevi Fountain

The Trevi Fountain is a fountain in the Trevi district designed by Italian architect Nicola Salvi and completed by Pietro Bracci. Standing 26.3 metres (86 ft) high and 49.15 metres (161.3 ft) wide, it is the largest Baroque fountain in the city and one of the most famous fountains in the world. The fountain has appeared in several notable films, including Federico Fellini’s La Dolce Vita.

The Roman Forum

The Roman Forum is a rectangular forum (plaza) surrounded by the ruins of several important ancient government buildings at the centre of the city of Rome. Citizens of the ancient city referred to this space, originally a marketplace, as the Forum Magnum, or simply the Forum. It was for centuries the centre of Roman public life: the site of triumphal processions and elections; the venue for public speeches, criminal trials and gladiatorial matches; and the nucleus

of commercial affairs. Here statues and monuments commemorated the city’s great men.

Constantine’s Arch

The Arch of Constantine was erected to honour Emperor Constantine after the battle against Maxentius in 315 AD, at the Milvian Bridge. The Arch was constructed with materials taken from other earlier imperial monuments dedicated to Trajan and Hadrian. On the top you can read the inscription: “Constantine overcame his enemies by divine inspiration.”

Palatine Hill

The hill, which was the first nucleus of city life in Rome, became thereafter the Imperial Headquarters. It is some 70 metres high and looks down on one side upon the Forum Romanum and on the other side upon the Circus Maximus. It is surmounted by the Villa Farnese, which, with its many gardens and staircases, covers much of the hill, and hence a good deal of the architectural remains of the Roman age. According to Roman mythology, the Palatine hill was where Romulus and Remus were found by the she-wolf that kept them alive.

Castel Sant’Angelo

The original building, dating back to 123 AD, was very different from the one that stands on the site today. Around 1200, Castel Sant’Angelo became the property of the Vatican and a sort of fortified corridor was built to connect the building with the Vatican palaces.

The Catacombs of Rome

The Catacombs of Rome are ancient catacombs, underground burial places under Rome, Italy, of which there are at least 40, some discovered only in recent decades. Though most famous for Christian burials, either in separate catacombs or mixed together, people of all the Roman religions are buried in them, beginning in the 2nd century AD, mainly as a response to overcrowding and shortage of land.

Food Guide to the best

Romans take their food and wine seriously

Italian Fortunato al Pantheon Every day there is a list of the chef’s suggestions offering simpler dishes, like meatballs with artichokes. (clockwise from top) Trevi Fountain; city square

22 The Baths of Caracalla Meat Toscano It serves some of the best meat in the capital. A chilled glass cabinet stands at the entrance, hung with massive pieces of meat.

Seafood Il Tempio di Iside If you want to sample the excellent fish for main course, or the desserts, skip the antipasti or pasta. A good wine list completes the pleasure.

NOV - DEC 2015

The Baths of Caracalla were the second largest Roman public baths, or thermae, built in Rome between AD 212 and 217, during the reign of the Emperor Caracalla. Chris Scarre provides a slightly longer construction period 211-217 AD. They would have had to install over 2,000 tons of material every day for six years in order to complete it in this time. They are today a major tourist attraction.

Altare della Patria

The Altare della Patria (“Altar of the Fatherland”), also known as the Monumento Nazionale a Vittorio Emanuele II (“National Monument to Victor Emmanuel II”) or Il Vittoriano, is a monument built in honour of Victor Emmanuel, the first king of a unified Italy. The Vittoriano features stairways, Corinthian columns, fountains, an equestrian sculpture of Victor Emmanuel and two statues of the goddess Victoria riding on quadrigas. The base of the structure houses the museum of Italian Unification. In 2007, a panoramic elevator was added to the structure, allowing visitors to ride up to the roof for 360 degree views of Rome.

You have a Satkhira that seems much more glamorous and mysterious than ever before! After the last Pathan Sultan of Bengal, Sri Hari, using the flamboyant title of Vikramaditya and his brother, Basanta Roy as minister, established a kingdom called Yasohara, (remover of glory). This was possibly a pun on the fact that Yasohara was “removing” the glory of a neighbouring ancient city Gauda, found in West Bengal, India today. Pratapaditya, son of Vikramaditya, then killed his uncle and cousins to ensure all the land and was hailed by many for his braveness since he was an independent ruler of a part of Bengal, defying the Mughals. and his father were part of the baro bhuiyans or the 12 independent Bengali rulers who offered the Mughal invaders ample resistance.

A general in Pratap’s army discovered a stone hand, which was the sign of one of the Shakti Peeths or body parts of Sati, which had fallen when Shiv did his tandav. The area was marked as blessed and Pratap built a Kali temple here. However, another story relates how the Kali statue was found embedded so deep into the forest floor that it could not be extracted hence a temple was built around it. Later, however, the statue was stolen but that’s another story and we will try to stick to the starry eyed legends for now. This temple is now called Jeshoreshwari, and much like Dhakeshwari and the legend of the Shakti peeth, this temple is much revered by the Hindus. The surrounding area shows ruins of an older building, which were possibly the baraduari (12 doors) that housed the Darbargah (audience hall) of Pratap’s era, close to his fort called Rajbasi. A derelict pond can be seen close by which was one of the many that surrounded this area.

Fast Facts

Satkhira is a district in south-western Bangladesh. It lies along the border with West Bengal, India. Most of the people here depend on pisciculture, locally called gher.

One of the better kept ruins, the hammam khana is an adventure in itself, as there is no proper entry save some broken steps one has to deftly jump across. Possibly built by one of the wealthy Mughals that stayed back after Pratap was defeated, this bathing house has rounded off ceilings with circular holes to let shards of light in. There are dome-shaped alcoves for storing items and a preliminary washing area before the main hammam begins. Inside, smaller cubicles with holes for drainage in the floor was possibly where water flushed out into the JamunaIcchamoti confluence that flowed a few yards at the backside. Today, there is only a tiny drain that gurgles by and the hammam rings empty, with only round pools of light illuminating its interiors. It is locally known as Habshikhana and visitors are sold a fantastic tale of how the heads rolled through those holes into the Jamuna-Icchamoti confluence at the back when prisoners were executed...

Satkhira has a lot more to offer in terms of archaeology and its history

Today, only the remains of a vibrant history give us a flashing image of a Satkhira bygone. Amidst the dust and the bustling crowds of humanity, an ancient Satkhira peeps out now and then.

Singapore

is always associated with a country that is prosperous, modern, a melting pot of cultures, and incredibly neat and orderly. The hustle and bustle of the Lion City is bound to keep you busy always. However, if you want to get out of this busy life and spend some quality time at leisure with your family and friends, Pulau Ubin is the place to be. Just a five-minute ferry ride from Singapore, Pulau Ubin is a near pristine island oasis with some of the best city-fringe cycling and mountain biking in Southeast Asia, perfect for those seeking a little respite from the city. With less than a hundred villagers who live life at their own leisurely pace, Pulau Ubin might be the last real ‘kampung’ (village in Malay) in Singapore.

Pulau Ubin was formerly a cluster of five smaller islands separated by tidal rivers. Local Malays once called the island “Pulau Batu Ubin” or “Granite Stone island”. This is because, in the old days, the granite from the island was quarried to make floor tiles or jubin in Malay. The name of the island was later shortened to Pulau Ubin.

Dhabi’s most iconic landmark, the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque, features 82 white domes. Built between 1996 and 2007, it was designed to be an architectural wonder that incorporated both modern and classic Islamic artistic styles. Diversity is reflected by the mosque’s architecture where Greek and Italian white marble covers the exterior, while Islamic calligraphy decorates the inside. However, what makes this mosque really special is that it’s a platform for cultural exchange where people from all religions are welcome. “Sheik Zayed’s vision for the mosque was not just a place where Muslims can pray, but a platform for cultural exchange,” says a mosque tour guide.

42

That’s not all. In many of the world’s most beautiful mosques, visiting hours are limited and non-believers must tread warily. But not at Abu Dhabi’s Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque. Here we take you through the exteriors and interiors of this architectural wonder.

The Mausoleum

Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan rose to prominence in the 1940s for his uncanny ability to negotiate peace between Bedouin tribes in the Arabian Desert. In 1966, he became founding president of Abu Dhabi. In 1971, he established a federation with the Emirate of Dubai that led to the formation of the United Arab Emirates – a new nation combining seven emirates – with himself as president. Zayed used revenue from Abu Dhabi’s vast oil reserves to build skyscrapers, world-class infrastructure and cultural treasures, like the Grand Mosque, for which construction began in 1996. Zayed died in 2004, three years before the Grand Mosque was completed. He is buried in a mausoleum, on the mosque’s north side.

for 30,000 people – was inspired by Pakistan’s Badshahi Mosque and Morocco’s Hassan II Mosque. In its corners stand four 107m-high minarets that bring together three geometrical styles from three different civilisations: Mamluk cubes from Egypt at ground level, Fatimid-style hexagons from North Africa in the middle and, on top, cylinders inspired by Turkey’s Ottoman architecture.

Artistic archways

The main hall is supported by 96 columns, each clad with Macedonian marble and inlaid with pearl and other stones

The Grand Mosque has 82 onion-top domes of seven different sizes to epitomise the beauty, passion and grandeur of Islam’s Mughal era. Its curved archways reflect quintessentially Moorish, or North African Islamic, architecture.

The foyer

Visitors must remove their shoes before entering the foyer and adhere to a dress code: anklelength pants and closed shoes for men; for women, arms, legs and heads must be covered (headscarves are on loan for free in the car park). Note the Arabic calligraphy encircling the hollow inside of the onion-top dome. Giving a verse from the Koran, each letter is painted with gold leaf and in a calligraphy style known as An-Naskh, the most common font in printed Arabic.

January

1st may be the de facto beginning of the New Year in the Western hemisphere thanks to the Gregorian calendar, but some cultures believe the New Year takes place at a different time altogether. The Chinese New Year is in late January or early February. Rosh Hashanah - the Jewish New Year - is in autumn, and some cultures follow the Julian lunar calendar and celebrate in mid-January. In Bangladesh the New Year, Pohela Boisakh, is celebrated in mid-April. People celebrate it wearing new clothes, having exciting food and with cultural celebrations.

Eat 12 meals in Estonia

Estonian New Year’s tradition calls for eating 7, 9 or 12 (considered lucky numbers) meals on New Year’s Day, to ensure abundant food in the coming year. Traditional New Year foods – Estonian sauerkraut (mulgikapsad), baked potatoes and Swedes with hog’s head, white and blood sausages. Vegetarians have to make do with potato salad, navy beet and pate. Dessert – gingerbread and marzipan; drinks – beer or mead, mulled wine and champagne.

Dance with bears in Romania

The most famous of the famous mask dances of Romania, the bear dance involves men in bear skins dancing to the music of drums and pipes, warding off evil spirits. The bear dies and is reborn, symbolic of death and rebirth, as a New Year replaces the old one. The Romanians also keep their lamps alit on New Year’s Eve till the dawn of the New Year’s Day, for a sunny New Year and rich harvests through the coming year.

Spice & wine gkjv I g` Food and beverage aficionados are now marrying spicy Indian fare with sparkling wines By: A bh is h ek Ch a k ra b or ty

When

it comes to finding the perfect glass of wine to go with French, Italian or American cuisine, the options are endless. Finding the ideal match for the spicy food preferred mostly in this part of the world, however, is more complicated. Wine aficionados were also never quite satisfied with the wines available to accompany dishes in this part of the world where the food is much spicy; the former never managed to fully complement the rich flavours of the latter. Sam Bhatia, a veteran of Continental Airlines, became frustrated with not having a good answer when asked what wines to pair with Indian cuisine. “As aficionados of Indian cuisine, we were never quite satisfied with the wines available to accompany our dishes,” says Bhatia. Led by Frédéric-Jean Hoguet, wine expert and member of the prestigious Académie du vin de Paris, Bhatia and few of his friends started to find an answer to this

58 Mirza Ghalib wines are manufactured in France’s Pays D’Oc, one of the great wine regions of the country

question and after lot of research, they came up with Mirza Ghalib wines. “Mirza Ghalib complements spicy and complex flavours in one of two ways: First, wine’s acidity boosts the layers of flavours in a dish while softening its extremes -- whether of body, richness, fattiness, or spiciness. Second, the wine’s fruitiness or sweetness tones down spicy heat, letting the dish’s other flavours shine,” says Bhatia, principal and founder of the Sufi Wine Company.

From the haven of wines

Served in 46 restaurants between New York and New Jersey, including some of the most highly awarded restaurants like Devi, Tulsi, Tamarind Tribeca and Junoon, it is manufactured in France’s Pays D’Oc, one of the great wine regions of the country. Bhatia says the region’s rich soil, fine climate and hilly terrain led them to choose this region. “The Pays d’Oc boasts a rich and natural combination of steep slopes, hilly peaks, vineyards, garrigue vegetation and the sea.

Moreover, the territory is embraced by its Mediterranean climate that comfortably enfolds the vines with its dry and windswept soils,” adds Bhatia. They plan to launch the wine in India, Bangladesh and some other South Asian countries in 2015.

Food pairings

The Mirza Ghalib White is described as round, velvety, aromatic, and dry, with a final touch of vanilla and best accompanies fish dishes and lighter vegetarian delicacies such as tikkas, pakoras and samosas. The Mirza Ghalib Red is described as wellbalanced with velvety smooth tannins and main aromas of red mature fruits and spices. It best accompanies north/south Indian vegetarian and non-vegetarian cuisine, such as lentils (dal makhani), curries (chicken tikka masala), assorted kebabs and biryanis, go for Mirza Ghalib Red. And the Mirza Ghalib Rose contains a fine aromatic expression of fruits and flowers and is best accompanied with both vegetarian and nonvegetarian Indian food.

When you travel, a lot of your energy is spent to maintain the busy schedule. So, overall fitness is crucial to your business and more importantly to your wellbeing By: Sharjina Hossain

Business

travel is like a marathon. It’s often long, always rigorous, and no matter how much effort you put into your performance, unexpected situations like stormy weather or a client’s stormy personality can leave you feeling unbalanced. For business owners and executives, there is nothing harder on your overall vitality than business travel. When you travel, a lot of your energy is spent physically getting to your next meeting, performing in that meeting and repeating the process over and over. Therefore, overall fitness is crucial to your business and more importantly to your wellbeing. Being fit can improve your leadership, your focus and your clarity. Healthy and strong immune systems prevent all types of sickness you are prone to while travelling. No matter where your business travel takes you, use this guide to stay fit in transit, in meetings and beyond.

Right mindset

Working out while travelling can be easy, but only if you have the right mindset. Leaving with only vague ideas about exercise will give you every opportunity to make excuses when exhaustion, stress and responsibilities start piling up. Instead, plan ahead. Pack plenty of workout clothes and shoes and research your destination to learn about your hotel’s gym access or other opportunities to exercise in the vicinity.

Workouts

A little creativity can help you stay active rather then spending time in front of the television. Little tricks like leaving your workout clothes right next to your bed or having a workout partner that’s going to wake you up is very important. Remember, it is important to be passionate about your own health while you keep your career healthy. Hang on to these golden rules: a. Your health is most precious. Give some thought and effort to taking care of you. b. A healthy lifestyle is not about temporary diets, it’s about making life long changes for life long results. c. Hard work at the gym pays.

Most business trips do not make considerations for participant’s personal health. Instead, schedules are crammed in the most time-efficient way possible. But, just because you’re always in public doesn’t mean you can’t focus on your fitness. When your mind is engaged, your body should be as well. Basic stretches include gentle neck rolls, rounding your back, or twisting your upper torso, all while taking deep breaths. While breathing deeply, contract your abdominal muscles for five to ten second intervals to strengthen your core. The privacy of your hotel room offers opportunities for more elaborate exercises than stretching. The open space in front of or beside your hotel bed provides the perfect space for Pilates or yoga, light aerobics such as jumping jacks or step ups and calisthenics using your body weight like pushups, squats and lunges. Here are two calisthenics you can try in your room. Do sets of 15 into three times,

Jump squat Resistance bands are a great way to exercise on the room. There are several advantages to using resistance bands. The first and most obvious advantage is how much easier they will fit into your luggage compared with free weights. With your resistance band training, every part of both the concentric and eccentric part of the exercise has resistance, resulting in better range of motion strength and more complete stimulation.

Hit the gym

For a more effective and sweat breaking workout, check out your hotel’s fitness facilities. The best part of gym is: weight training. Here is one part of working out that we often overlook. Weight training and muscle building is not just for body building competitors and actors, rather you can and must adopt this exercise regime to expose your true inner strength.

Stretching can help keep cramps at bay

Advantages of gymming

You are in the lifting atmosphere and this motivates you to lift. Not just for the gentlemen, we women too can achieve a lot through weight training. It is a common misconception that lifting heavy weights causes women to look bulky and masculine. Rather, weight lifting tones the muscles and burns fat even during resting period.

Count your cals

Over the past few decades, weight loss has been a multibillion dollar industry advocating ridiculous diets, which never really make it easy for busy lifestyle like you and me. Instead of expensive pills and potions and herbal teas I demand knowledge and understanding of natural and healthy lifestyles!

68

The latest popular instruction is to eat small but frequent meals throughout the day. And it is believed that this is the key to weight loss. But the question is do you have time to make six meals and carry around your food bag? Research has proven this wrong and has been called out by researchers, who say it does not

boost metabolism or encourage weight loss. In fact, the research -- presented recently at the Society for Endocrinology annual BES conference -- suggests counting calories is all that really matters when it comes to losing weight. But don’t be scared as this isn’t risky business at all. Take your weight in pounds and multiply by 10. That is the amount of calories you need to maintain your current body weight. To lose weight eat 300-500 calories less than that. The trick is to eat more protein and fiber to keep you feeling full.

ÔFor me, it’s

cricket firstÕ ÔAvgvi Kv‡Q wµ‡KU Av‡M,

evwK me c‡iÕ By: Faisal Islam Razib

Mustafizur Rahman, the young sensation from Bangladesh, no longer needs an introduction. The left-arm pacer, who is all of 19 years old, has set the cricketing world on fire by becoming the first bowler in history to take 11 wickets in his first two ODIs. Here he talks about his life and cricket... How did Eid celebrations went? I had a great time with my family and had some beautiful moments with my friends. You have become a sensation for Bangladesh in a short time. How do you feel? There is nothing new to be said. And such feelings can’t be expressed with words. When have you thought to become a bowler? I used to bat with tennis ball early in my career. However, when I started to ball with the kookaburra ball, that was the start. And itÕs still going on. Was fast bowling you passion since childhood? No. I was a batsmen and I used to go tyo various places with my brother to play cricket. But the day I started bowling with the kookaburra cricket ball, I felt that I could be a bowler. Which was a bigger series for you – India or South Africa? Both were big. No one should be undermined. As a cricketer every series is important for me.

How did you like bowling to Indian batsmen like Virat Kohli, Shikhar Dhawan, etc? Not only against the big guys of India, like Virat Kohli or Shikhar Dhawan, I am not even afraid to bowl against Shahid Afridi or Mohammad Hafiz of Pakistan or any other top player in the world. I always play my natural cricket. Whom do you consider the best bowler in the world? I like Mashrafe bhai the most. I am his fan since childhood. And itÕs a priviledge for me that IÕm playing alongside him in the national team. He has always been a source of inspiration for me. Besides, I also like the bowling of Mohammad Amir of Pakistan and Mcgraw of Australia. Wasim Akram of Pakistan will always be the best to me.

Which countries have you travelled so far playing for Bangladesh? Which is the best one? I have travelled to West Indies along with the team. That was the best tour.
