lake is probably one of the most magical places of Myanmar. Surrounded by mountains and clusters of colourful floating homes, the peaceful lake – located in the heart of Shan state, south-east of Mandalay – is about 22 km long and is considered the second largest in the country. At an altitude of 900 metres, Inle is also one of the highest lakes of Myanmar and shares borders with Thailand and Laos. Natural and unpolluted, Inle is famous for its scenic beauty. However, this beauty comes not just from nature but from its relationship with the people who live on it. Towns growing from the islands, houses suspended above the water, and floating commerce that takes place between them all.

Tribal County

More than 30 hill tribes live in the surrounding mountains. The most unique are the people of Inle Lake (called Intha) – some 70,000 of them – who live in four cities bordering the lake in

Row Row Row your boat

The Inthas are known for their leg-rowing techniques. Usually, most transportation on the lake is traditionally by small boats, or by somewhat larger boats fitted with ‘long-tail’ motors that are necessary because of the usual shallowness of the lake. Local fishermen, however, practise a distinctive rowing style, which involves standing at the stern on one leg and wrapping the other leg around the oar. This unique style evolved for the reason that the lake is covered by reeds and floating plants, making it difficult to see above them while sitting. Standing provides the rower with a view beyond the reeds. However, the leg rowing style is only practised by the men. Women row in the customary style, using the oar with their hands, sitting cross-legged at the stern.

For a break from the lake, Phaungdawoo Pagoda is worth a visit. The pagoda houses five small gilded images of Buddha, which have been covered in gold leaf to the point that their original forms cannot be seen. Old photographs hanging on the monastery walls show some of the images in a more pristine form. It is reported that some gold has been removed on occasion to reduce its mass. Although the monastery is open to all, only men are permitted to place gold leaf on the images.

As for stay, many luxury hotels are available apart from some reasonable places for low-budget travellers. Shan food is a favourite dish in Myanmar and one can get to eat the delicious food in and around Inle Lake. in southeastern Bangladesh and falling under the Chittagong district, Bandarban is one of the most exotic tourist attractions of the country, popular with local and foreign tourists alike. Literally meaning the “Dam of Monkeys”, this little monarchical spot is eight hours away from Dhaka, two from Chittagong and three hours away from Cox’s Bazar, and can also be accessed by a six-hour bus ride from the Rangamati district. Let’s take a look at what to see when you are there.

About a two-hour walk from Keokradang and located in the Ruma Upazila of Bandarban, Jadipai is one of the widest waterfalls in the country. Tourists highlight this as one of the most beautiful sights of their trip. The flow of the waterfall gains strength during the monsoon season. There are no accommodation or food facilities

story starts with a Maharaja who built ramparts, a fortified city and a large deeghi (water reservoir) in the north western part of Bangladesh. This city lay forgotten, buried under the changing times and the flowing Talma River, only to be discovered in the early 19th century, when researcher Francis Buchanan visited Panchagarh and came upon Bhitargarh. It can be said that Bhitargarh was functional and active from 6th-13th century (CE).

There is proper written mention of the identity of Prithu Raja who was supposed to have founded it but apart from its strategic location across the ancient trans-Himalayan trade route connecting Bengal with Tibet through the Himalayan passes, Bhitargarh may also have connected Magadha to Yunan/Szechuan via the Brahmaputra valley in Upper Assam. It offered one of the many routes available to travellers of that time and according to theory, it could also well have been a city state, much like the city states of Kathmandu. Rivers Karatoya and Tista played an important role in the trade of Bhitargarh.

Up until 2008, no proper excavation had been done, so Dr Shahnaj Husne Jahan, a faculty at University of Liberal Arts of Bangladesh, took the herculean task of unearthing the lost glories of this ancient city. Her initial surveys included long walks under a

Fascinating finds

At a size of 25 sq km, this site is the largest ancient fortified city in Bangladesh (and possibly South Asia!) and is enclosed in four concentric quadrangular boundaries. The fourth quadrangle infact falls mostly in the Indian side as Bhitargarh lies on the Northern most borders, with Jalpaiguri as its neighbour. Currently five sites are being excavated where the Maharajar Deeghi is, one of the largest man made water body in the region, and 10 ghats (landing stations) with laid brick alignment have been discovered around it. The foundational remains of a quadrangular cruciform temple were found yet, a fascinating find was the

VISIT DURING RAINS

KNOW YOUR ABC’S

BOOK IN ADVANCE

Monsoons are the best time to travel to Bhitargarh. The Maharajar Deeghi, largest man-made water body, turns into a beautiful sight then.

As Bhitargarh is a place of historical importance, it will be helpful to read up on its past and various points of interest before visiting.

Booking your stay in advance is a good idea considering there are only a handful of options including the Rest House and Circuit House.

FITNESS IS A MUST

CARRY A MAP

AVOID TAKING CHILDREN

Climbing the slopes of the huge sand dunes in Deadvlei requires good stamina levels. Ensure you are fit enough before planning a trip.

As the Lake District is spread over 2000 sq kms, carrying a detailed walking map or a compass for navigation will prove useful.

Haiku stairs are narrow and some sections have chipped off due to wear and tear, therefore it’s best not to take along very young kids.

GIFTING

a Paithani sari as part of a girl’s wedding trousseau is customary in the region of Maharashtra, India. One of the richest saris in India and every Maharashtrian woman’s priced possession, the Paithani sari though is quite humble in its roots. It originates from a quaint little town called Paithan in Aurangabad, Maharashtra, and is hand woven on ancient tapestry looms which are operated manually. The sari’s rich history, tradition and exquisite design has earned it international fame.

History

The paithani weave is an age-old art that dates back to the Satvahana era in 200 BC. It survived under successive rulers, including the Mughal emperors. It is believed that the Nizam of Hyderabad was so attracted to the Paithani that he made several trips to Aurangabad to source this magnificent piece of beauty. After the decline of the Mughal influence, the Peshwas of Pune revamped the Paithani weave to suit their tastes.

Making

Paithani is made from natural silk or cotton with precious gold or silver metal threads that lend it the Midas touch. It takes approximately one day to set the

ESTABLISHED

in 1977, the Aga Khan Award for Architecture is considered the most prestigious accolade in the field of architecture. It is given every three years to projects that excel at restoration of precious heritage sites and outstanding building concepts that address the needs and aspirations of Islamic societies, for instance, eco-friendly projects and conservation initiatives. It rewards a staggering amount of $1 million to the winner. Shortlisted this time, in the 13th cycle of the awards, are the Bait-ur-Rauf Jame Mosque in Uttara, Dhaka, and the Friendship Centre, in Gaibandha district of Bangladesh. Bangladesh has previously been awarded this honour thrice. The Aga Khan Award for Architecture had been given to the Grameen Bank Housing Program and the National Parliament House for the period of 1987-89, and to a school in Rudrapur in 2007-2009.

Bait-ur-Rauf Mosque

Designed by architect Marina Tabassum the Bait-ur-Rauf Jame mosque was built on a plinth on a site axis, creating a 13 degree angle with the direction of the Kaabah, also known as Qibla, lending it its first innovation. What is amazing about this structure is the rotating prayer hall and the formation of natural light courts on all four sides. The hall is raised on eight peripheral columns and the plinth, because of its inimitable construction, it remains vibrantly lit with natural sunlight all through the day. The play of light, reflected through a delicately designed roof, is especially wonderful to see. Inspired by the Sultanate Mosque architecture, the mosque is built with porous

The structure is made of handmade bricks along with timber and stones, inspired by a third century monastery, Mahasthangahr, the relics of which had been found in Bangladesh. The materials have been used keeping in mind the flood susceptible area that Gaibandha is. The architect has included an embankment, with a water run-off pumping facility. There is also provision to collect excessive rainwater.

Hot noodle soups for winter, cool homemade kulfis for summers and Hilsa for monsoon. Every season has its own food as a trademark.

In Bangladesh and parts of West Bengal (India), monsoon equals to the season of Hilsa fish. Hilsa is the most desirable food among the fish lovers. For Bengalis, if you don’t like hilsa, then you are not a Bengali.

The rich taste and high content of fat that it releases while cooking makes the fish popular. While cooking Hilsa, mustard is the main ingredient used as they compliment each other. The most popular hilsa dish is the ilish macher paturi. The fish is first marinated then wrapped in a banana leaf and cooked in a fried pan. The juices released by the fish mix with the marination and together produce a dish worth to die for! willed, independent and faithful character in herself, Teresa is an inspiration for many youths who want to serve to the society. Her long life reflects her willingness to follow her own conscience even though she knew the path won't be easy.

Early life

Born as Gonxha Agnes Bojaxhiu in Yugoslavia, Mother Teresa considered August 27, 1910 to be her actual birth date as it was the day she was baptised. During early years, little Agnes was amused with the stories and lives of the missionary services in Bengal, India. She was left fatherless at the age of eight with her mother and two elder sisters to run an embroidery shop. At the age of 18, she left home and family to become a nun, only never to return. She travelled to Ireland and joined ‘Sisters of Loreto’ to learn English and later to Darjeeling in India, where she learnt Bengali and taught at now Teresa’s School. There she adopted the name Teresa and took her first vows.

Even though she was leading a comfortable life serving at the convent, Sister Teresa became more and more disturbed with poverty around her. She then recalls was her “call within call” when she understood that she could only help the poor by living among them. She gave up the convent life and uniform and started her missionary work wearing a plain white cotton sari with white border, and travelled to Patna to learn basic medical training at the Medical Mission Sisters.

Bangladesh connection

Immediately after the independence of Bangladesh on December 16, 1971, the Bangladesh Catholic Church authority invited Mother Teresa to start her work in Bangladesh itself. In response, she started a centre in Khulna first. Moreover, in early 1972, Mother Teresa and her Sisters came to Dhaka and took over the vacated building at Amputty, from where the Adoration Monastery had moved to Mymensingh town. They named their centre ‘Shishu Bhavan’. In this centre, the Missionaries of Charity gave shelter to a good number of females. “I know god will not give me anything I can't handle, I just wish god wouldn’t trust me so much.”
