abroad. Whether you are flying with us to celebrate the festive season with your loved ones or simply to enjoy the fantastic time of the year, here’s wishing you a Happy and Prosperous New Year. The holidays are an exciting time for everybody, but even more so for us this year. As Biman took delivery of two brand new Boeing 737/800 aircraft respectively in November and December and expanded its existing fleet, you can now enjoy the same great experience to more destinations with greater comfort and value than ever. With the joining of Meghdoot and Mayurpankhi, Biman plans to expand its route to Colombo in Sri Lanka, Male in Maldives and Guangzhou in China in the New Year. The two aircraft would also help Biman increase its frequencies on the existing routes and improve its on time performance. Moreover, as the Bangladesh Government has declared 2016 the Tourism Year, we are ready to fly more passengers. The airline will exert its all-out efforts in order to make it a success. As our growth story continues, we’d like to take a moment and say a BIG Thank You! We’re grateful for your unwavering support and belief in us. Biman Bangladesh Airlines has recently been awarded the Foreign Airline of the year 2014 by Malaysia Airports Holding Sdn. Bhd; we have been awarded SGD 6000 for best service standards at Changi Airport, Singapore; our events and activities have seen astonishing turnouts – these are testaments to your significance in our success. In a budget

Pokhara, Nepal Whether you’ve returned from a three-week trek or endured a bus trip from hell, Lakeside Pokhara is the perfect place to recharge your batteries. The scene is a chilled-out version of Thamel, stretching along the shore of a tranquil lake where you can beetle about in a colourful paddle boat. There’s much more to Pokhara than its laid-back charm. As a backpacker haven, Pokhara has a huge array of budget, mid-range and premium hotel choices. The sheer amount of outdoor activities also make it possible to customise a cost-effective stay, it is arguably the best paragliding venue on the globe and is surrounded by white-water rivers. And last but not least, it’s the gateway to the world-famous treks in and around the Annapurna range and beyond. Street food costs just pennies, and a nicer dinner will run you about $4.

Bagan, Myanmar Bagan in central Burma is one of the world’s greatest archeological sites, a sight to rival Machu Picchu or Angkor Wat. The setting is sublime – a verdant 26 square-mile plain, part-covered in stands of palm and tamarind caught in a bend of the lazyflowing Irrawaddy (Ayeyarwady) river and framed by the hazy silver-grey of distant mountains. Renting a bike to explore the temple-dotted landscape is the cheapest way to spend a day, which will offset the $300 needed to see the sunrise in a hot air balloon over the temples. Another way to see the sights is by horse-drawn cart, which is comparatively a total steal at around $20. Like pretty much the rest of Asia, food and drinks are dirt cheap.

Safari

Singapore The Singapore Zoo’s nighttime attraction, the Night Safari, is often described as the country’s top attraction. Despite the S$35 ticket price for adults and the need for a ride out into the boonies, the experience of being at the zoo at night is hard to miss. You’ll only get 4.5 hours to explore the park (between 7:30pm and midnight) but, unlike the day, it won’t be hot. However, you won’t get much opportunity for photography of the nocturnal animals as they keep lights low, and do remember to wear more coverage if you’re afraid of mosquitoes. You’re also offered the opportunity to trek the paths on your own, a bit more frightening when it’s pouring rain. Of course, you can opt for the popular safari ride that takes you through the whole thing. Then there are the obligatory animal and cultural shows.

The Emerging Destination

Mergui, Myanmar 24

When Myanmar opened its doors to the outside world a few years ago, travellers poured in. A tourist circuit developed quickly – Yangon with its golden pagoda orBagan’s thousandyear-old temples and floating village life on Inle lake – but, in a nation almost as big as Texas, that leaves room for exploration. But you have to get off the beaten path a little bit for an authentic experience.

Spend three days cruising through one of the countries best known treasures, the Mergui Archipalego. Mergui’s 800 mostly uninhabited islands lie scattered along the western coast and provide an endless array of empty beaches, lush rain forest and pristine reefs rich with manta rays, sea turtles and whale sharks. After Mergui, sail to the Thai waters to visit the Khao Sok National Park’s limestone tower, home to langurs, macaques and fish eagles.

Hong Kong Hong Kong is the best Asian city to take kids. My reason for this is that transport is fantastic and it is very easy to get around. The MTR (train system) is user friendly and you can get everywhere you want to go. There are plenty of places to eat including all the Western take away outlets, which kids really enjoy. There is no issues with food – you are able to eat anywhere unlike a lot of other Asian countries.

Hong Kong has Disneyland and Ocean Park among many other attractions that will keep the kids entertained. Disneyland is focused on the under 10’s while Ocean Park is more suitable for teenagers but young kids will also love the animals and many of the rides. Shopping is also fantastic, from markets to prestige labels, it’s all there. So there’s a lot for the females too. Make sure you barter hard in the markets though – it’s a competitive sport!

the home of the Hoolock Gibbon in Lawachara National Park, the allure of the Bengal Tiger and the crashing waves of the Bay of Bengal hitting the Cox’s Bazaar beach, the deltaic land of Bangladesh holds many natural sights that could make the perfect entry as an eco-tourism destination. Yet, the need to protect and preserve natural heritage emerges as travellers become more sentient about conservation and mass tourism is re-assessed. Call it eco-tourism, community tourism or sustainable tourism, each of these labels comes with its own set of responsibilities and actions. Bangladesh is home to three UNESCO World Heritage Sites, two of which are cultural ones and the third is a natural heritage site, the Sundarbans mangrove forest, which fringes the south-west part of the country. The 1990s saw the formulation of the Environment Acts and Rules and a decade onwards, changes in the tourism sector started acknowledging the need for a form of travel that promoted the conservation and preservation of natural resources. The UNWTO definition of Sustainable Tourism says: Tourism that takes full account of its current and future economic, social and

environmental impacts, addressing the needs of visitors, the industry, the environment and host communities. The tourism industry of Bangladesh has been toying with the concept for a while now and over the past decade a number of tour operators have streamlined offers designed to suit travellers seeking eco-tourism or naturebased travel. As the demand grows, eco-sites and resorts/cottages have also sprung up all over Bangladesh near natural sites. A major impact was the USAID project Integrated Protected Area Co-management (IPAC) in 2003 when it first started its pilot project of working with communities living in the vicinity of a forest/wetland or Protected Area and offered eco-tourism ventures as a form of alternative income generating option. This initiative resulted in eco cottages like Nirob/ Litchibari eco-cottages near the Lawarchara National Park in the Sylhet region and attracts a multitude of tourists looking for eco-friendly accommodation.

LAST

month news went viral about a 16th-century church in Mexico spookily rising from the watery depths. Abandoned in the 18th Century after a plague swept through the Chiapas region, the Temple of Santiago usually rests about 30m underwater. The surrounding area was flooded as part of the 1966 construction of the Nezahualcoyotl Reservoir. But now it’s visible again, as the reservoir’s waters have receded. The reservoir’s level has dropped by more than 80 feet because of a long drought. “The church in the Quechula locality was built by a group of monks headed by Friar Bartolome de las Casas, who arrived in the region inhabited by the Zoque people in the mid-16th century,” says and expert, “so this is the first wave of Spanish conquerors who arrived to Mexico, and the first wave of colonisation of southern Mexico.” It’s a grim chapter of history.

In the 1980s, local scuba diver Kihachiro Aratake discovered what appeared to be a monolithic stepped pyramid made of rock, with perfect right angles, huge steps and straight columns – and more strange structures were found in the area over subsequent years. Some experts believe that the structures could be all that’s left of Mu, a fabled Pacific civilisation rumoured to have vanished beneath the waves thousands of years ago. Others believe that the formations could be natural. Whatever may be the case, we leave it to our travellers to go and decide.

Mardale Green, in Cumbria, disappeared in 1935 when the valley was flooded to make way for the Haweswater Reservoir, which would later serve Manchester with water. Hundreds of people were evicted from their homes and most of the village’s buildings were blown up by Royal Engineers who used them for demolition practice. But nearly 80 years on in 2014, water levels at the Haweswater reservoir started to drop significantly due to the lack of rain during the recent dry summer months. The remains of

Port Royal in Jamaica is commonly referred to as the wickedest city on earth the ancient structures, including farm gates and tree stumps, have now been revealed beside the receding waterline.

Shore Temple

For long, historians believed that the granite shore temple in Mahabalipuram, 60 km south of Chennai, India, stood alone in its sea-facing splendour for over a millennium, surviving the pounding surf and tsunami and making it to UNESCO’s World Heritage Site for its simple but breathtaking architecture.

38

But was it always alone? Local legends swirled around a complex of seven temples that once stood there-apparently so spectacular that it invited the jealousy of the Gods who unleashed the seas on it. Rumour got closer to reality when the 2004 tsunami shook up the Indian coastline, revealing manmade remains like a granite lion. Further underwater exploration indicated that a large complex of temples likely once stood here, most probably destroyed by the very same phenomenon that revealed them more than 10 years ago.

The palace of Cleopatra

In the late 1990s, a French-Egyptian archaeology team discovered what appeared to be the grandiose palace of the mighty Egyptian queen Cleopatra, lost for 1,600 years off the shores of Alexandria in the murky waters of Aboukir Bay. Likely submerged by earthquakes and tidal waves – which also sunk Alexandria’s old lighthouse – the palace was full of thousands of artefacts, including sphinxes, statues, coins and amulets. Ongoing plans are underway to open this incredibly rich archaeological site to the public, in what could be the world’s first underwater museum. Meanwhile, many of the best-preserved pieces have been moved to museums, and divers can explore

Port Royal

Port Royal, Jamaica, commonly referred to as “the wickedest city on earth” conjures images of marauding pirates, daring naval conquests, looting, riches, destruction and devastation. It boats an intriguing and turbulent history as it rapidly grew to become the most important trading post in the New World. At the height of its glittering wealth, on June 7, 1692, Port Royal was consumed by an earthquake and two thirds of the town sank into the sea. A series of fires and hurricanes followed and the town was never restored to its former glory. Port Royal lived out its days as a British naval station and remains as a small fishing village today.

is a land of miracles. If we are in its capital Dhaka, we would be lost in the hustle and bustle of the busy city life. The traffic here at times have earned the reputation to go from bad to worse. However, if we keep aside this congested city life and move ahead towards the south-eastern tip of the country, we would be pleased to see the drastic change in the environment. Welcome to the Teknaf Peninsula. Rugged cliffs, picturesque rural villages and one of Bangladesh’s last pristine rainforests, Teknaf Peninsula is a place where wild Asian elephants are still seen roaming the forest. In short it is still a great tourism destination, especially compared to the commercialisation of some other destinations in Bangladesh. If you’re all the way down this way or thinking of travelling to St. Martin’s Island, Teknaf, especially the Teknaf Game Reserve is definitely worth a look. The abundant plant-life in the reserve includes a number of medicinal plants that are used by the local communities, as well as a variety of bamboos, canes and grasses. The Mochoni Nature Park is incorporated into the boundaries of the Teknaf Game Reserve, and from the hilltop of the nature park, visitors have a spectacular view of the Bay of Bengal, as well as Myanmar. There is also a new nature interpretation centre at Mochoni Nature Park, which is open to the public and is used as part of the training programme for eco-tour guides under the Nishorgo initiative.

Wide options

Visitors can also choose from a range of hiking trails of differing lengths and levels of difficulty whereby, with the aid of an ecotour guide, they can truly get close to nature and enjoy the biodiversity of the Teknaf Game Reserve, knowing that great effort is being put into conserving this beautiful part of Bangladesh for visitors to enjoy.

Travel advice

Busses depart for Teknaf every hour from the main bus terminal at Cox’s Bazaar. These are generally the slow, pick-up-and-dropoff-anyone variety. The local bus terminal is located well away from the beach along the Main Road and is best accessed by a short CNG baby taxi ride. A privately hired vehicle is probably a better option for a group of travellers who would like to see the more empty stretches of beach at Teknaf.

Some other places to be

Ways to get sweaty in snow

US Nagano For snow bunnies Aspen in the United States has a reputation for being the winter playground of models and moguls, celebrities and socialites.

50

Canada For snow kiddies Whistler-Blackcomb in Canada is a great place for ski and snowboardloving parents to introduce their toddlers to the piste.

As you oh, ah and wince over different Winter Olympic events, have you ever thought of trying out bobsleigh, luge and skeleton? Well, all three events take place on an ice-covered course with banking turns, but the differences lie in the type of sled used to navigate the run. If you happen to be in Japan in winter, you can visit ‘The Spiral’, officially referred to as the Nagano Bobsleigh-Luge Park, on the main Japanese island of Honshū. Used for bobsleigh and luge competitions for the 1998 Winter Olympics, it is the only permanent bobsleigh, luge and skeleton track in Asia and the only one of its type in the world with two uphill sections.

Deogyusan

Deogyusan Resort (former Muju Resort) is one of Korea’s most famous mountain peak ski resorts. Covering an area of over 7 million sq m, the resort is located in the Gucheon-dong Valley, at the base of the famous Deogyusan mountains. Nature lovers will particularly enjoy visiting the resort, since it is located in one of Korea’s beautiful national parks and was specially designed to harmonise with its natural surroundings.

Khovsgol Japan For snow foodies Niseko is making the most of its four resorts -Niseko Village, Annapuri, Hanazono and Hirafu -and tempting people with its amazing food.

Jan - feb 2016

If you want to try out a lesser-known but equally exciting winter destination, head out to Khovsgol in Mongolia. The region hosts a Khatgal Ice Festival every year in February to promote winter tourism and this includes ice-sculpting, horse-sled races and ice-skating on the frozen Khovsgol Nuur, an extraordinary lake that stretches 136 km deep into the Siberian taiga. Other scheduled events include a wrestling competition and ankle bone shooting, apart from several sources of entertainment.

Poush

†cŠl

Though this is a shared festival, being observed both in Bangladesh and India, it is not as widespread in Dhaka as it is in the neighbouring country. People have still managed to hold on to this age old tradition in the older parts of Dhaka, commonly known as Puran or Old Dhaka.

Sankranti, Sonkrain or Mokor Sankranti, is a colourful and vibrant celebration. Marked as the beginning of the Capricorn calendar, or the end of the Bangla month of “Poush”, this festival is observed every year on January 14.

Many relate this festival to being the door to health and wealth and open their doors, or quite literally, their rooftops, wide open for their friends and neighbours to come and take part, all day long, in kite flying, fighting and generous amounts of fun. In fact, it is so widely known for its tradition of flying kites, that it is even known as “Ghuri Utshob” (kite festival). The evenings are usually spent with fire eating and “ateshbaji” or fireworks.

No festival in Bangladesh is ever complete without food. And when in Bangladesh, what better food than our ever famous mishit (sweets)? Ranging from a wide variety of “kheer” or “payesh” as it is more commonly known in Bangladesh, to other sweet confections or “pithas” like dudh puli, patishapta gokul pitha, tela pitha and kolar bora or banana fritters, there is much and more to choose from.

Main attractions are to be seen at famous places in Puran Dhaka like Laxmibazar where the festival of kites majorly blooms in all its glory. Closely cropped buildings are seen full to the brim with young and old alike, with colourful kites and abundant cheer. Music, in any which genre, can be heard all around and not one song can be distinguished from another among the ruckus of people’s good cheer.

LondonÕs shoppers stop

The emergence of London’s Redchurch Street in the East End as an alternative shopping destination to the West End is all the more striking given its gritty past By: Archana

Napoleon

once referred to England as a nation of shopkeepers. Now 200 years has past. But the one thing that hasn’t changed yet is: London still remains one of the best places in the world to go shopping. What has changed today is the emergence of new vicinities, which were once a complete “no go” for shoppers. One among them is the Redchurch Street. Colourful graffiti art, three- and four-storey brick-front buildings, cutting-edge brands -- Redchurch Street is a retail go-to in the East End neighbourhood of Shoreditch. The area, which once had a reputation of a dodgy place to avoid, has transformed into a vibrant residential and shopping mainstay for a hip, youthful crowd. Redchurch Street has the presence of both chains and homegrown labels, selling clothes, home goods and specialty items like bean-to-bar chocolate from the Brooklyn-based Mast Brothers, which opened its first international location here last year.

the last few years, the Dhaka Literature Festival, popularly known as Hay Festival, had been an immense success because of its amazing ambience and the quality of its programmes. The last fest, too, followed a similar track. From talks on science by Nobel laureate Harold Varmus to an impressive array of sessions showcasing Bangladeshi arts and discussing world affairs, DLF was stimulating and inspiring to people of all ages and interests. The Hay Festival made its debut in a Welsh town called Hay-on-Wye in 1988 and now takes place in 15 countries, over five continents. While it faces some criticisms like why an inherently “English” event would receive so much of limelight at the Bangla Academy and the whole idea of it being inadvertently, or otherwise, “elitist”, this fest is looked forward to, each year, as an international platform for local and peripheral writers and performers of various art and literary forms to come together and express themselves.

Big names

Held from the November 19-21, 2015, the event boasted not just one, but two Nobel Prize laureates, the prominent writer of the famous book A House for Mr. Biswas, VS Naipaul and his protégé, Paul Theroux,

journalist Jon Snow. The second day was equally potent with A Multitude of Ideas where four authors from four different parts of the world came on one stage to discuss the need to write about alternate universes and dystopian worlds, and the agonizingly enlightening speech by Chinmoy Guha on translators and their struggles. On the final day, luminaries from home and abroad graced the stage. Feminism: The Next F Word by Shobhaa De, Jude Kelly again, Urvashi Butalia and Tasaffy Hossain was a major highlight of the day along with the session where Jon Snow spoke of journalism and its evolution. DLF 2015 served up to bibliophiles, not just what was expected but much more, with its mix of cultural performances to popularly emerging debates and ideas of the modern world to its book and food stalls and all the way down to the heavy security measures taken to ensure a safe, fun and enlightening time for the lovers of literature. DLF was produced by Jatrik, hosted at the Bangla Academy and had the popular newspaper Dhaka Tribune as the title sponsor, City Bank as the platinum sponsor and the Ministry of Cultural Affairs as the special partner.

‘Never shy away from failure’ By: Mu nira Fidai

Jaago Foundation was established in April 2007 in Bangladesh to work towards the improvement of people living below the poverty line. It currently has 13 schools in Bangladesh giving free of cost education to over 1,800 underprivileged children. We exchanged a few words with Jaago Foundation founder Korvi Rakshand about how it all came to be… When you started with Jaago, what was your vision? I started Jaago by visiting different slums in Dhaka and striking up conversations with children there. The big breakthrough came when I visited the slum in Rayerbazar when an woman working in a school agreed to send her child to me. At that time, we had no organisational structure. We had rented out a small place in Rayerbazar and some of us taught English language to kids three days a week. How did it all happen – from a small room to such a big foundation? Well it did not happen in a day. It took eight long years to become what it is now. We started out by giving uniforms to the children.

Then we started providing children with soaps, hairbrush, tooth brush and paste and shampoo. When it came to funds to fulfil other needs like offering lunch etc we asked people to sponsor education for one child. It was a new concept and one which gained popularity through word of mouth.

In 2011-12, your foundation was hit by a lot of negative publicity. How did you handle that? In 2009-10, our Children’s Day fundraising programme of selling flowers to people on the roads and sending the proceeds to Jaago was a hit. In 2011, however, some people took advantage. In a volunteer pool of thousands, a few bad apples pocketed the money.

So for the next time, we introduced money receipts. I won’t say it curbed the problem altogether but by garnering accountability, it did reduce the problem to a great length.

‘I am deeply impressed what Jaago is doing for the children,' British High Commissioner to Bangladesh, Mr. Robert Gibson

Some people also asked us to go through a finance audit. As the foundation was still very new, I had to prioritise. It was either buying books for the children or doing the financial audit. We choose the former and suffered negative comments up until the time when in 2012, an audit firm did a pro bonno audit for us. What next? Once we set up schools in Dhaka, we would like to move outside Dhaka. I have been criticised a lot for some of the steps that I had adopted. For example, I wanted to harness a technology like Skype for our objective? After lot of research, we found an application called WebEx which allowed us to communicate as well as load audio visual content for children. As we wanted to use this for our students and schools, we took help from Dhaka University’s IER (Institute of Education and Research) to find lackings in our education system and prepare supplementary handouts where we felt necessary. We felt that the 13 schools we have now, or even a 100 that we may have in the future is, but a drop in the ocean. Major breakthroughs would occur if we could sell the concepts to the government of the country. Our country wants to go digital and our model was similar. We invited the ICT minister to see the model, and he was very impressed. Now, we have partnered with Agni Systems Limited and Grameen Phone to provide us with bandwidth and Internet connection in other districts. Today, we even have a school running at 700ft high mountains in Bandarban. We recruit assistant teachers to manage the children and fill the gaps. What would be your word of advice to the young? Three things. One, Identify your passion. Be it a profit or non-profit making concept, know what your calling is. Do some research. Know where the lackings are and then find out if people tried to address the problem before and why they failed, if they did. Take examples from their failures. And finally, partner with people, harness their expertise where necessary and never shy away from failure. We welcome young people, or even tourists to volunteer for us for a day.
