AUTUMN 2022

Location, location, location.

Built on one of the few available residential lots in the established Tuxedo neighbourhood, this house is the height of luxury. That’s precisely why Artista Homes chose this site as the backdrop to their homebuilding expertise.

“This home truly epitomizes what a new build can be,” says Artista Homes’ Frank Cotroneo.

The Artista Homes team completed the 4,400-square foot former showhome in 2021 in time to be included in the Fall Parade of Homes, where it won an award, and then the hearts of the family that ultimately purchased it.

“It checked all the boxes for them,” says Cotroneo. One of those boxes was a three-car tandem garage, a rarity for the area. It’s among the many attributes that attracted the homebuyers.

Add to this the handsome and striking exterior, with a white fieldstone façade, and painted structural timber beams that frame the second-floor balcony to recreate the “mountain modern” feel the builder envisioned. LED lighting was strategically incorporated to highlight the architectural details and surrounding landscaping. As much as it blends into the older neighbourhood, “it is still clearly a brand-new modern design, with

The crisp black and white theme of the outside continues to the inside, through the impressive entranceway. Surrounded by windows, the eightfoot-high front door swings open to reveal a large sunken foyer graced with 11-foot-high ceilings above and light grey ceramic tile flooring below. Here, guests can access a convenient recessed bench and a small powder room. A custom planter box adds an unexpected touch.

A grey quartz countertop with waterfall edge from FloForm graces the massive 10-foot-long island found in the kitchen. Lit from above by four sophisticated pendant lights from Total Lighting, it’s the perfect gathering and prep spot.

From this welcoming spot, “you know are about to walk into something special,” says Cotroneo. Special indeed. Ascending to the main level up a short flight of stairs, one enters a living area that houses several spacious zones—each equally functional and stylish in their own right.

Whitewashed, wide-plank engineered hardwoods supplied and installed by Curtis Carpets underpin the entire open concept main level. The flooring works in combination

with grey, black and charcoal accents used throughout the home to imbue warmth amid the overall white colour scheme.

Designed to provide a spa-like experience, the ensuite features a freestanding tub with a floor-

Occupying its own wing of the second level is the primary bedroom area. Curtis Carpets supplied and installed the fully heated tile system used throughout the entire room, even on the floor and walls of the fully glassed-in ensuite installed by Fort Rouge Glass.

Topping off this remarkable space is a huge walk-in closet with built-in cabinets and shelving.

The builder’s commitment to whole home luxury extends to the lower level, too. “We wanted to keep the open and airy quality here as found in the rest of the house,” says Cotroneo. “We achieved that by incorporating large, four-foothigh windows where we could, to maximize the natural light.”

The same engineered hardwoods, large windows, lighting and finishing materials help maintain continuity in the home from top to bottom.

With room for a games area, plus a wet bar equipped with a bar fridge, sink and storage, it’s the perfect setup for entertaining. A cozy seating area, with its 70-inch linear gas fireplace inset into an accent wall of painted pine wood cladding, is a perfect spot to settle in and relax. There’s enough space for a home gym, two more bedrooms and a full bathroom on the lower level.

Building a home of this size required Artista Homes to enlist expertise from trusted suppliers like McMunn & Yates, which provided most of the building materials for

the home, such as the interior doors and trim, as well as CV Blinds who supplied and installed automated window coverings. Specialists from Creative Door supplied and installed a garage door to enhance the home’s curb appeal.

This former showhome is a showpiece of the craftsmanship that Artista Homes is known for. “We knew what our vision was, and what kind of style would best realize it,” says Cotroneo. Now, that vision is being enjoyed to the fullest by the new homeowners.

About the builder

“Our home is an extension of us, and Artista has helped manifest that into giving us a home that continues to be an amazing space that inspires. In our eyes, they have elevated and refined their craft into something that has truly raised the bar for all custom homebuilders. We still come home each and every day and take pause in how beautiful our home is.”

With many testimonials like these under the Artista Homes’ banner, it’s no wonder that the company has established itself as a leading luxury homebuilder in new and established neighbourhoods throughout Winnipeg and beyond.

That’s because for this family-owned design-build company, their homes mean much more to them. They’re Artistas.

For more than 20 years, four brothers—Tony, Frank, Enzo and Gino Cotroneo—along with their brother-in-law Fabio Imbrogno, have been at the helm of Artista Homes. This close-knit team is guided by the 60-plus years of construction education, experience and enthusiasm of patriarch Antonino Cotroneo Sr.

With this extensive expertise comes peace of mind for their clients. Artista Homes’ owners personally oversee every custom home project entrusted to them. They are on site daily, working closely with their team to ensure a

superior build. A roster of trusted trades and suppliers—many of whom have been working with Artista Homes from the start—help the builder maintain consistency, quality and timelines. This has been especially critical when the industry overall deals with supply chain delays and labour shortages.

Renowned for pushing design boundaries and superior craftsmanship, the Artista Homes team continues to thrive, earning industry awards and praise for their luxury homebuilding prowess. More importantly, they continue to garner an impressive portfolio of testimonials from happy clients with every single build.

Stepping Out with Style

Looking for something to do as we head into fall? Here’s a peek at what’s on!

MUSIC

If it’s music you’re after, Winnipeg Symphony has their two main classical series, as usual.

(A)bsolute Classics kicks off with two works by two giants of the musical world. First, there’s Peter Ilyich Tchaikovsky's romantic Suite No. 3 in G major. Also on the bill is a work by Manuel de Falla. Turns out that the great Spanish composer loved Polish music. He never completed an intended stage work based on the music of Chopin but did leave his rarely performed piece Fuego fatuo. Both works are complemented by Mykola Lysenko’s Overture to Taras Bulba. (Saturday, Nov 5. Andrey Boreyko, conductor.)

Sneaking in before that Tchaikovsky work, (B)eyond Classics presents an evening of Dmitri Shostakovich (Symphony No. 10), Erich Wolfgang Korngold (Cello Concerto), Maxim Berezovsky (Symphony in C), and yes, Peter Ilyich Tchaikovsky (Variations on a Rococo Theme, original version). That Tchaikovsky kid is going to go places. (Saturday, Oct 8. Daniel Raiskin, conductor, Bryan Cheng, cello)

More music from Live at the WSO (Formerly Pops)! Hometown heroes the Crash Test Dummies wrapped up

their 2022 World Tour, and now original members Brad Roberts, Ellen Reid, Dan Roberts, and Mitch Dorge will perform favourites from their entire catalogue (like Superman’s Song and Mmm Mmm Mmm) for two nights with the WSO. (Sept 23 & 24. Julian Pellicano, conductor)

Next, enjoy a jaw-dropping performance by master illusionist Michael Grandinetti, accompanied by spectacular symphonic selections. Magically blooming roses, levitation, even mind reading, as the orchestra plays pieces of music audience members were thinking of. Who knows what will happen at the Symphony of Illusions? (Oct 22 and matinee Oct 23. Julian Pellicano, conductor, Michael Grandinetti, magician)

Halloween is just around the corner, and Live at the WSO: BMO Night at the Movies has an extra-special, spooky treat planned. In celebration of the 100th anniversary of the silent horror film Nosferatu, by F.W. Murnau, the WSO presents a special screening of the nightmarish 1922 German classic (with English subtitles) on the big screen, while the WSO performs Hans Erdmann’s score live. (Oct 29, Naomi Woo, conductor. Burton Cummings Theatre)

Maybe a different movie genre is more your taste. How about a family classic that still packs a punch? Macaulay Culkin is Kevin McCallister, an eight-

year-old boy who’s accidentally left Home Alone when his family leaves for Christmas vacation. Everyone knows what happens when a couple of bungling thieves try their luck. Kevin! (Nov 25 & 26. Julian Pellicano, conductor)

More child’s play with Kids Concerts with the WSO presents Alligator Pie. Dennis Lee’s well-loved children’s rhymes come to life through music and song thanks to a fun and whimsical orchestral score by Canadian composer Abigail Richardson-Schulte. (Oct 2 matinee. Naomi Woo, conductor. All WSO concerts at the Centennial Concert Hall unless noted.)

The Manitoba Chamber Orchestra is celebrating its 50th Anniversary. The celebrations kick off with the Bruno Sisters: Yolanda (violin) and Carmen (cello) performing Vivaldi’s Concerto for Violin, Cello, and Strings. Plus, Bach’s banging Brandenburg Concerto No. 1, Stravinsky’s mischievous Pulcinella Suite, a reprise performance of Julian Grant’s riveting Jump Cuts, and Charles Cozens’ Eligie. (Sept 28, with numerous viewing options: matinee, evening, and online. Anne Manson, Music Director)

Next, a match-up between titans: Beethoven Versus Haydn. Beethoven once claimed he “never learned anything” from his former teacher Haydn. On the other hand, Haydn gave less than glowing reviews of his student’s music. The evidence: Beethoven’s Symphony No. 7 and Haydn’s Symphony No. 96, ‘the Miracle.’ Everyone wins. (Oct 6, with numerous viewing options: matinee, evening, and online. Anne Manson, Music Director)

Then, The Winnipeg Singers and their conductor Yuri Klaz join the MCO for a production of Bach’s F major Lutheran Mass, with its glorious choruses and profound arias. On the same bill: Handel’s joyful Water Music. (Oct 26, evening in-person or online concerts. Alexander Weimann, conductor)

Next, in a packed MCO season, is conductor John Yoo (“The guy simply oozes music,” Rocky Mountain News) along with guest star flutist (and wife!) Alice Dade. The duo team up for a new flute concerto by Michael Fine and Bach’s Orchestral Suite No. 2. Plus, Bartok’s much-loved Music for Strings,

16 | STYLE MANITOBA | AUTUMN 2022
Royal Winnipeg Ballet presents The Handmaid’s Tale

Percussion, and Celesta. (Nov 9, evening in-person and online presentations. All MCO concerts at Westminster United Church, 745 Westminster Ave)

Meanwhile, Virtuosi Concerts presents Virtuosa! With Infusion Baroque, playing music of the 17th and 18th centuries on historical instruments, including works by once-popular composers such as Barbara Strozzi, Ana Bon, and Élisabeth-Claude Jacquet de La Guerre, as well as works by W. A. Mozart and Antonio Vivaldi written for women who were famous instrumentalists of their day. (Oct 30)

Next, From Far Above: Bringer of Light showcases duo Marina Thibeault (viola) and Janelle Fung (piano) for a program featuring works by Clara Schumann, Nadia Boulanger, and Rebecca Clarke, as well as contemporary compositions by Alexina Louie, Anna Pidjorna, and Manitoba-based violist-composer Melody McKiver. (Nov 18. Both Virtuosi Concerts presentations at St. Andrew's River Heights United Church, Kingsway and Oak St)

Manitoba Opera presents a true ragsto-riches story with La Cenerentola, Gioachino Rossini's take on Cinderella, with libretto by Jacopo Ferretti. A social-climbing stepfather, ungrateful stepsisters, a prince disguised as a servant, and love at first sight: Lizzy Hoyt as Angelina/Cenerentola has a lot to sing about in this light-hearted classic of bel canto, last presented by Manitoba Opera in 1996. (Nov 12, 15 & 18. Sung in Italian with English projections. Tyrone Patterson, conductor. Centennial Concert Hall)

When it comes to New Music, Groundswell has a lot going on. First off, GroundSwell brings nine-piece Ensemble Télémaque from Marseille, France, to Winnipeg and Brandon for a diverse concert featuring four new pieces written for this concert by Bekah Simms, Rita Ueda, James O’Callaghan and Jim Hiscott, plus other works from France and North America, performed by one of the best chamber ensembles in France. (Sept 20, Collège Louis Riel; Sept 21, Théâtre Cercle Molière; Sept 22, Lorne Watson Recital Hall, Brandon University School of Music)

Next, Avant-garde chamber music ensemble Standing Wave makes their Groundswell debut with a program composed of new and recently commissioned pieces for ensemble, interactive

electronics and video, including work from their JUNO-nominated album 20C Remix. (Oct 20, Winnipeg Art Gallery, Muriel Richardson Auditorium)

Then, Megumi Masaki presents Transformation, a celebration of human resilience, featuring four interactive multimedia works, including a collaboration between T. Patrick Carrabré and Margaret Atwood, a piece by Bob Pritchard honouring Japanese Canadians sent to internment camps during WW2, and Ai WeiWei: On Poetry by Gordon Fitzell, centered on an inspirational text by the famed Chinese artist and activist. (Nov 17, Winnipeg Art Gallery, Muriel Richardson Auditorium. All GroundSwell Live concerts are pay what-you-can.)

Winnipeg Jazz Orchestra is celebrating their 25th anniversary with a celebration featuring a special guest: clarinetist, saxophonist, and WJO co-founder Sasha Boychuk. Hits by Benny Goodman, Count Basie, and Duke Ellington plus WJO favourites from years past will make this silver anniversary a swingin’ affair. (Oct 27, West End Cultural Centre)

Next, WJO present Viva La Musica, featuring the Cuban-inspired Congolese music known as Rumba Lingala, popular in Tanzania, Kenya, and Uganda. With the help of special guests, WJO will showcase the fiery rhythm and joyous melody of Congolese music. (Nov 6, Centre Cultural FrancoManitobain)

Then, WJO goes Back to the Future with performances of forward-looking music by artists including Miles Davis, Oliver Nelson, Thelonius Monk, Wynton Marsalis, and Ornette Coleman alongside brand-new compositions by Fred Stride and Jean-Nicolas Trottier. (Nov 27, Winnipeg Art Gallery)

DANCE

Royal Winnipeg Ballet presents The Handmaid’s Tale. Margaret Atwood’s cautionary tale is choreographed by Lila York, to music by James McMillan, Arvo Pärt, and others. (Oct 12–16, Centennial Concert Hall)

Meanwhile, Winnipeg Contemporary Dancers have their in-person 20222023 Season Launch on Sept 23. PayWhat-You-May, contact WCD for more details.

THEATRE

The Royal Manitoba Theatre Centre Mainstage kicks off with the stage adaptation (by Lee Hall) of the classic Paddy Chayefsky film Network, directed by Daryl Cloran. When news anchor Howard Beale goes off the rails on-camera, the ratings skyrocket as he taps into the anxiety of contemporary society. But is he a prophet or a puppet? Do not adjust your set. (Oct 20Nov 12, preview Oct)

Next, it’s the original swashbucklers

The Three Musketeers, with Catherine Bush’s adaption of the novel by Alexandre Dumas, directed by Christopher Brauer. D’Artagnan arrives in Paris where he meets the famous trio: Athos, Porthos, and Aramis. He dreams of joining the King’s Musketeers, but will he prove himself worthy to join their ranks and defend the King’s honour? It’s all for one and one for all! (Nov 24 - Dec 17, preview Nov 23. OCTOBER 21 & 22

BURTON CUMMINGS THEATRE

STYLING THE STEREO

ROGER ENO

The Turning Year

(Deutsche Grammophon)

Garlands came late for underrated composer Roger Eno after he teamed with brother Brian Eno for last year’s Mixing Colours. Those pensive instrumental works for keyboards are echoed here in the synthesizers of “Stars and Wheels,” but most of The Turning Year breathes in gentler piano territory that could be New Age balm if such music allowed unsettling ripples. Most of those come from a German string ensemble, Scoring Berlin, which adds unexpected surges and wordless dramatic commentary to thoughtful but undemonstrative piano works for engaging push and pull. The closing “Low Cloud, Dark Skies” is arresting by that pairing. In sunnier territory, the slow, beautiful waltz, “An Intimate Distance” is a soundtrack theme awaiting the right French movie. Call it New Edge.

SINIKKA LANGELAND

The Magical Forest (ecm)

In a spirit similar to Loreena McKennitt or Alexis Kochan, Norwegian singer/songwriter Sinikka Langeland digs deep into folk music tradition, unearthing ancient stories and tracking the perfumed trails of mysticism. Much of her research has been in Finnskogen, a region that connects culturally from Finland through Russia and Siberia to Japan, and her instrument is the kantele, an indigenous Finnish/ Karelian zither that under her fingers can conjure harp, harpsichord and raindrop echoes, but in the best ways this music is moored to neither time nor place. Credit generous arrangements that welcome input from her great players, with the airy, swinging drumming of Markku Ounaskari and the deep double bass of Anders Jormin – virtually the other half of the leader’s heartbeat – matched by the burly horns of Arve Henriksen and Trygve Seim, and the pure choral voices of Trio Mediaeval. English translations and generous historical notes are included.

Emsculpt Neo is a non-invasive, non-surgical procedure that focuses on body contouring. What does that mean? You are burning fat AND building muscle at the same time! The average person gains 25% muscle and loses 30% fat in the treated area!

JERRY SEREDA Backroad Therapy (InDepenDent)

Jerry Sereda brings the summer with him in “Backroad Therapy,” a breezy country single, where the best relief is taking a drive down a prairie road – “cornfields on the left, you singing on my right” – and leaving worries in the dust. Smart guitars, a hearty vocal and a singalong chorus drive an enormously likeable song from the Manitoban. His fifth album is due later this year; “Backroad Therapy” is an encouraging first taste.

“…WE ARE WITNESSING THE BIRTH OF A STAR …” – SIMON COWELL

On the BOOKSHELF

The Naked Don’t Fear the Water (Harper)

In this remarkable work of reporting, Matthieu Aikins tells how he tossed away his Canadian passport and went undercover to tell the grim, compelling story of refugees trying to get to a better world. With his friend “Omar,” an English interpreter from Afghanistan, the two make numerous, sometimes futile, attempts to get to Europe: from Kabul, to Turkey, to a refugee camp in Greece. Along the way, they encounter smugglers, cops, activists, and people fleeing the dangers in their homelands. An astonishing and breath-taking book.

Just Like a Real Person (Anvil Press)

Doug Diaczuk, journalist and photographer living in Thunder Bay, is a two-time winner of the 3-Day Novel Writing Contest. (A yearly event always worth checking out for the steady quality of the successful entries.) His narrator crashes into other cars for a living. Under the leadership of a corrupt tow truck operator, he pilfers the stuff left in the demolished cars, ready for the taking, to feed his addictions but recalls an encounter with a woman in a yellow dress, who has her history to deal with. A terse, haunting story about smashed cars and broken people.

How to Be a Revolutionary (Verso)

Beth is a mid-level diplomat from South Africa posted to Shanghai. She tends to keep to herself, but forms a friendship with Zhao, a neighbour who types all night long. When he vanishes, she’s left with his manuscript, a forbidden history of China’s recent past. As Beth gets drawn into telling Zhao’s story, she also recalls her own conflicted involvement in the anti-Apartheid struggle in her homeland. C. A. Davids has written a thought-provoking novel of what ordinary people sometimes do in impossible times.

FALL

FITNESS TIPS: Transition Your Routine Indoors

Don’t shoot the messenger, but as we enjoy the beauty of autumn, the chill of winter is fast approaching. While it is tough to leave the warm days of summer behind, autumn is a perfect time to start a new fitness program.

Bring yourself back to the days when September meant new school clothes, supplies, and a change of scenery as you progressed through the grades. There is a unique energy that comes with beginnings, and even if you were active through July and August (yay you!), your routine will surely need a refresh to adapt with the seasons.

Here are some tips for a healthy transition into the colder months ahead.

1.Rehab as a priority

Have you had an ache that you’ve been suffering with since the spring? Now is the best time to visit your physiotherapist to get it looked at and book a series of deep-tissue massages. Dropping temperatures can irritate muscle and joint pain, so you are doing yourself a kindness to prioritize recovery this fall.

2.Breathe in the outdoors

I won’t remind you again, because I know my fellow Manitobans get me when I encourage them to enjoy the scenic fall colours before the snow falls. (Oh, sorry, I said it!) Autumn is ideal exercise weather, so gather up a couple friends for a hike or brisk walk, and create some beautiful stories to share with the world.

3.Plan your winter workouts

Developing a plan for your cold-weather exercise routine is important and it’s never too early to start shopping options. Make a list of activities you’ve wanted to try, like kickboxing for endurance, weight training for body shaping, or Pilates for flexibility, and narrow down which classes are convenient and realistic for you. Remember that while there are local options, there are also many fantastic virtual programs to choose from these days. Many businesses

will be offering end-of-year discounts on memberships so you can save while getting fit. (For readers who mention this article when signing up with me this month, I’ll give two additional FREE months of coaching!)

4.Track your calories in creative ways

If you haven’t already invested in a fitness watch, you may want to think about it, or perhaps put it on your Christmas list. Wearing this while playing with your grandkids or raking the leaves can give you all the good feels when you realize how many calories you’re inadvertently burning.

It can take some effort to continue to be active as the leaves fall, but forcing good habits is important for your mental and physical health. No hibernating for the winter for us – haven’t we had enough staying home to last a lifetime? Instead, keep active and exude energy!

What's going on inside your body right now? Some things can be safely assumed: the heart is pumping blood, the stomach is digesting lunch and the lungs are sending oxygen into the blood stream. But understanding your unique body on a deeper level can better guide your personal journey to wellness.

As the only health and wellness clinic of its kind in Canada, Body Measure uses scientific tests and data to map out a blueprint for your unique body composition and identify personalized ways to meet your wellness goals, from better managing your weight, improving your fitness or athletic performance or ensuring you're aging in a healthy manner.

“We are the premier resource to help someone take charge of their health,” says Melina Elliott, co-owner with Erica Henderson. “We help you to be healthy, get healthy and avoid many chronic health conditions that are so prominent today, such as a fatty liver, Type 2 diabetes and heart disease.”

There are a variety of services and scans available dependent on your health concern or goal. A popular test is the Dexa Scan, which evaluates body composition via a very low dose x-ray. This shows the amount of muscle and fat mass and how it's distributed throughout the body. This data is used to determine the best food choices, macros and exercises to achieve your goals.

Body Measure's most popular service is the menopause package (Dexa scan, hip and spine bone density scan and resting metabolic rate test), and for good reason, as this stage of life can have dramatic changes on the female body. To help keep clients as healthy as possible as they age, the tests offer information on body composition, bone density, daily caloric burn and risk of certain health conditions, including osteoporosis and sarcopenia (progressive decline in muscle mass).

Another common concern as women age is urinary incontinence.

“Many people think urinary incontinence is just part of getting older, but it's not, and it can be managed or treated,” says Henderson.

Commonly caused by weak pelvic floor muscles, urinary incontinence can be reversed by strengthening these muscles with Kegel exercises. Body Measure's Emsella treatment goes even further.

Get the Inside Track

“Emsella is a chair that uses high intensity focused electromagnetic energy to contract the muscles in your pelvic floor in order to build the muscles and treat incontinence. Each session is the equivalent to over 11,000 pelvic floor (kegel) exercises. It is entirely non-invasive, with no downtime after appointments,” says Elliott.

For those who want a little extra push in toning other muscles, the Emsculpt Neo can tone and build muscle while killing fat cells. Four sessions do the equivalent of 12-16 weeks of resistance training for muscle building and, on average, leads to 30 per cent fat loss and 25 per cent muscle increase, with optimal results after 60-90 days.

“The Emsculpt Neo uses a combination of high-intensity focused electro-

magnetic energy, which contracts the muscle groups to 95 to 100 per cent capacity – normally we can only use them to 35 per cent – and builds the muscles, and radio frequency to reduce fat,” says Henderson.

The Body Measure website details the tests available so you can find the right fit or call and speak to a staff member about the best option for you. New services are coming in the fall.

From services to help you understand your unique body to resources to support you on your health journey, Body Measure can be the guiding light to help you see inside yourself and empower you to take action and achieve your best health.

Community Renewal Through Art

There’s a palpable sense of energy in the air as passersby watch artists work on four tri-sided mural frames, outdoors at 943 Portage Avenue. Bright colours and bold lines vibrate in the late summer heat.

An initiative of the West End Biz in collaboration with the City of Winnipeg, the RENEW Art Project brings together a dozen local artists working collectively to create 12 individual murals. Although the 10x10foot artworks will eventually be permanently installed throughout the West End, the creative process is unfolding in a public outdoor mural garden. Aluminum panels are temporarily installed on wheeled free-standing triangular wood frames, displaying a mural on each side to provide interesting angles and maximum exposure. “We regularly move them around so every work – and artist –has a chance to face the street and be seen,” says Mandy van Leeuwen, curator for the project. “I think it’s important in terms of making both the art and the process accessible to everyone.”

The West End Biz has a long history of working with van Leeuwen, an accomplished and experienced mural artist whose work can be seen

throughout the city and province. After securing a grant from the City of Winnipeg, the organization approached the muralist to develop a vision and turn the project into reality.

“There couldn’t be a more welcoming time for creating a sense of renewed positive energy and connec-

tion,” says van Leeuwen. “The goal is to breathe new life into the community while working collectively in a space that offers us, as artists, the opportunity to build relationships, support each other’s creative journey, and best of all, create a lasting reminder that art is healing, connective, and transformative.”

Participation in the project was by invitation. Van Leeuwen delved into the deep and diverse connections she has made throughout the local art community. “I knew that these artists would naturally be great at this because, in many cases, I’ve followed them for so long and admire their work,” she explains. Some were colleagues with whom she had previously worked; others she followed on social media.

Starting from a viewpoint of endless possibility, of celebrating the diversity of these artists and what they create, she offered them an opportunity to embrace their unique styles of art in a meaningful and dynamic way. “I sent out the invitations,” continues van Leeuwen, “and they all said yes!”

The 12 artists working on this project are Cheney Lansard, Franklin Fernando, Jessica Canard, Jeannie White Bird, Jonato Dalayoan, Kal Barteski, Kevin Celestino, Michel Saint Hilaire, Mike Valcourt, Nereo Zorro, Stormy Angeconeb and Xavier Mutshipayi.

The vivid colours of Xavier Mutshipayi’s work, titled Sisterhood, were inspired by the way he has experienced the people of Winnipeg. “I like the way people are open to each other regardless of culture, nationality, or gender,” says the artist, who started making art at the age of five, while growing up in The Congo. He has had several exhibits in Winnipeg and was preparing for an exhibit in Edmonton, which he delayed so he could participate in Renew.

“It’s an honour to be part of this collaboration and work beside talented artists in the community,” he says. “It’s a fabulous experience. We make connections and exchange ideas. All the artists here are so happy to be sharing this time together.” He sees the collective project as a great opportunity for both his personal development and his career. Although it’s the first mural he has ever done, it was something he always wanted to do.

The Renew Art Project was an opportunity for Keven Celestino to work on his first mural as well. “I don’t know if I can ever go back to bending

over a table,” says the artist, adding that he started working on his piece by exploring the meaning of renewal. “I wanted it to be a process of discovery. I didn’t know what it was going to look like at first, but I knew I was going to figure it out. It’s so great to work with other artists. I’ve learned so much from everyone.”

On the day that Style Manitoba visited the art garden, Stormy Angeconeb was exploring the use of a roller and a paint sprayer for the first time. “I get to learn new tricks,” says the artist as she creates the backdrop for the Ojibway florals that will reflect her heritage. “I am expanding my abilities.” Previous projects have included murals on the West End Cultural Centre, at the Forks, and on the New West Hotel.

Artist Jeannie White Bird is also drawing from her Indigenous roots to express the spirit of renewal. Her mural depicts the healing energy of water and how it transforms both the land and the lives of those who live on it. In keeping with this spirit, White Bird invited community members Mahogany Kowitch and her daughter Natasha Brownell to participate in creating the mural and benefit from the process. “I have been so blessed,” says the artist. “I wanted them to experience this, and I have space within here to share.” White Bird appreciates the project’s capacity to expand the horizons of art in the community.

At the same time, the RENEW Art Project pushes the parameters by extending the very breadth of styles and approaches involved in making murals. The geometric images created by Jonato Dalayoan are a case in point. “I started doing murals as a side hustle,” says the graphic designer and owner of 4TWO Design Inc. “It’s always been a passion of mine. It’s

awesome to be part of a group of such talented artists, to be so public and to have all these pieces in one place.”

Dalayoan’s bold style graces such Winnipeg landmarks as The Beer Can and the Gas Station Theatre. The Renew mural is his take on an abstract urban landscape. “I like to leave it up to the person to interpret my work,” he says. “My goal is always to attract people to art – from a five-year-old to a senior. If they can look at something I’ve done and be drawn to it, I’ve done my job.”

That ability to draw people into his work is something Cheney Lansard has on full display with a mural that captures the raw emotional intensity of just being alive. This project was an opportunity for his own artistic renewal and it shows. As onlookers stopped to see him work, the expression on the face looking out from the giant canvass continued to evolve. “It talks back to me,” says Lansard. And it’s obvious that the painting speaks to others as well.

Born of such diverse artists, styles, and ideas, the murals and their very public creation contribute to the cultural enrichment of the community while encompassing true Manitoba spirit. “Now is the time when we need art more than ever,” says van Leeuwen. “We need people to be celebrated for their diversity, and with such a diverse community all around us, why not do it right here?”

“Murals have the sole purpose of lifting others up,” she adds. “Art is a gift that offers endless ways to embrace our humanity.”

The Renew Art Project is sponsored by City of Winnipeg Councillor Cindy Gilroy. Follow the West End Biz on social media for updates and events related to the progress of the murals.

Your Thoughts

Tuesday

My partner and I always enjoy leafing through Style Manitoba for design ideas and your publication seldom disappoints! We’ve actually used some of the ideas presented in Outdoor Living for our own property, and were also inspired by your magazine for an upcoming indoor renovation we’re planning for next year. Beyond Style’s regular columns, the last few issues have been even more interesting with the coverage on what’s being filmed in Manitoba. We both loved the editorial on The Porter (featured in the spring issue), followed by SkyMed in the summer edition. In fact, we bingewatched both series. It was exciting to recognize certain filming locations used in the series. We’re hoping Style Manitoba continues covering the local film scene in upcoming issues.

John Talbot, Winnipeg

What a lovely home featured on the cover of Style Manitoba’s summer issue! Bringing those beautiful kitchen cabinets up to the ceiling was a great idea, both from a storage perspective and aesthetically. (Personally, I never cared for having space above the cabinetry – it’s just a wasted dust-collecting space.) The island is beautiful as well, along with that gorgeous bathroom. I’m a big fan of freestanding tubs, and having the separate glassed in shower option is the icing on the cake. Clean and crisp, this home design is impressive..

Zoey Selinksi, Winnipeg

I’m really happy I picked up Style’s Summer 2022 edition, as I noticed Beyond Van Gogh was running in Winnipeg while reading the Stepping Out with Style section. My friends and I attended the show – it’s incredible how Van Gogh’s work married with technology to produce such an immersive experience for attendees. We absolutely loved it!

Sarah Bronson, Winnipeg

Just finished reading Style Manitoba’s Summer 2022 issue, and was rather impressed with the home featured as the cover story. It’s great to know Manitoba has its share of talented builders, who in turn work with local suppliers to construct such exceptional homes. Thanks for the coverage!

BUILDING BACKYARD DREAMS

Winnipeg-based Windeck has been building backyard dreams for decades. Today, the family business, operated by Mel and Judy Dueck alongside sons Brandon and Jordan, is a leader in top-shelf deck projects with full professional design capability, skilled in-house crews, and a product assortment that is second to none.

“We have built our reputation over nearly 30 years where we listen to customers, design to the highest quality standards and build decks that last the test of time and perform in our tough climate,” says Windeck founder and president Mel Dueck, mentioning that their longevity in the market has earned the company both trust and

recognition among Manitobans looking to create exterior paradises.

Dueck remarks that just before COVID, they flew down to Louisville to participate in the North American Deck and Railing Association Design Awards. Windeck was honoured with two awards for designs that took second and third places in the industry competition.

“This was very gratifying. Windeck is a company from a small city in Canada that beat out larger players across North America to win these awards. It shows we are on the right track. We are being noticed for our quality by our peers, even those in another country.”

He points out that Windeck’s business model seeks to offer the best value but not the lowest price. “Our goal is to build the best without compromise. This commitment has made us leaders in residential, cottage and commercial projects.”

Some of the products that have helped Windeck make their name are engineered S.T.A.R. aluminum railings

that are strong and good-looking, Wolf PVC decking that offers durability beyond similar composite products, and DURADEK vinyl decking solutions. Windeck also offers Structure Louvered Roof Systems, aluminum pergolas and retractable awnings.

“Our teams also design kitchens, fireplaces and fire-tables, roof systems and waterfalls. We also do privacy and wind walls that are cutting edge.”

For do-it-yourself deck projects, Windeck has built a considerable supply offering. “We have one of the largest inventories in Canada to help curb against supply chain challenges,”

notes Dueck, inviting people to visit their showroom at 937 Redonda St.

The Right Path

While creating an outdoor space that would both complement and soften this contemporary home while also being low maintenance, the 3 Seasons Landscaping team took the right path. The larger, smooth Barkman Broadway paver in sterling was perfectly selected to mimic the home's facade. The central path with clean, straight lines opens up behind the hydrangeas to create a gathering space at the entrance to linger during hellos and goodbyes.

“The lime-green plants and the white stones are used to soften and brighten the grey of the house and pavers. The simple plant colour palette of green and white creates a calm space to arrive home to,” says 3 Seasons landscape designer Kari Zahariuk of the Annabelle hydrangeas, goldflame spirea, Siberian pearl dogwood and Karl Foerster feather reed grass.

The plants used are low maintenance, requiring little to no pruning. The riverstone bed cover means the homeowner's won't be out in the yard weeding, while an automated irrigation system takes care of any needed watering and keeps the lawn healthy, which is

the best way to prevent weeds, according to Zahariuk.

This dramatic home now has a striking yard that enhances its beauty and offers a perfect balance.

Scenic location meets quality housing

For new home buyers thinking of situating in east Winnipeg, Canterbury Crossing offers all the bells and whistles people have come to expect from top-tier developments.

Canterbury Crossing is a professionally master-planned multi-phase residential development nestled in the eastern-most part of Transcona and accessible off newly improved Ravenhurst St. And while the site sits on the edge of the city, local conveniences abound with a location close to Regent Ave. shopping and entertainment options, Transcona schools and libraries, and a wealth of restaurants and hospitality businesses, as well as medical and professional services. The site also makes for an easy dash to cottage country, thanks to its proximity to the Perimeter Highway.

“In 2014, Ravenhurst Developments Inc. began assembling approximately 72 acres of land in Transcona near the north-west corner of Dugald Road and the Perimeter Hwy,” says Brandon Powell, President and CAO of Winnipegbased Lombard North Group, a principal behind the development and project management on the new neighbourhood. He reports that development work was initiated in 2019, kick-starting the Canterbury Crossing development. “Canterbury Crossing was envisioned to be a place where people of all ages, stages, and wages can call home in close proximity to a variety of development amenities.”

The design configuration of the development spreads amenity areas and a substantial pathway system throughout the community, enhancing neighbourhood connectivity to public spaces. According to Powell, Canterbury Crossing is being constructed over three phases.

In Phase 1, Canterbury Crossing features a large naturalized lake, playground and public green space. Moreover, the developers placed a large public reserve area between Phases 2 and 3, further enhancing recreational opportunities for community residents. To capitalize on the amenities within the development lots have been strategically planned around the lake and green spaces for homebuyers craving unobstructed views of natural areas from the privacy of their homes.

Altogether Canterbury Crossing offers 289 single-family lots, 70 duplex (side-by-side) lots and 2.8 acres dedicated to a future multi-family development. Lots are sold directly to select new home builders.

“Phase 1 features 128 single-family properties and 24 duplex homes. This section is fully subscribed by homebuilders, as is Phase 2, a section that has 95 single-family lots with showhomes currently under construction. Builders are ready with a wide range of new home designs on a good selection of sites,” he says, mentioning A&S Homes, Broadview Homes, Kensington Homes, and Randall Homes as the prin-

cipal homebuilders in the development. Custom builders such as Alia Custom Homes, AWC Builders Ltd., Bluestone Homes, Eagle Custom Homes, Galaxy Homes and RSB Homes are also building in the community.

“Phase 3 is currently under development with expected completion in the Fall of 2022,” says Powell, mentioning this phase will open up an additional 66 single-family homes and 46 duplex residences (inclusive of 32 front driveway style homes and 14 rear lane style homes).

“Canterbury Crossing is one of Transcona’s newest residential communities. The development’s design will appeal to homebuyers seeking quality living options and community aesthetics at a variety of price points. The community’s diverse array of housing types will be conveniently connected to parks and green spaces, shopping, public transit, and adjoining neighbourhoods,” says Powell, inviting people to cross over into something new and discover all the benefits of life at Canterbury Crossing.

Something for everyone

Ladco has returned to north west Winnipeg with the launch of Highland Pointe, a new multiphase development off McPhillips Ave. Sited on 400 acres, Highland Pointe is an inclusive neighbourhood that will offer something for everyone.

“Initial servicing is complete, and our group of homebuilders has taken up the full slate of 250 lots in the first phase,” says Ladco’s Vice-president of Development, David Borger. He remarks that Highland Pointe will offer everything from luxury lake walkouts to townhomes and duplexes.

“There will be a wide range of offerings to fit numerous price points and family needs,” he says, commenting that Highland Pointe represents a return to the north for Ladco following their Garden Grove project in the 1980s.

This year, Ladco will service 300 lots in the second phase of development.

What’s on offer? Ladco’s Manager of Land Development, Michael Carruthers, tells Style Manitoba that they plan for 35 acres of parkland in addition to lakes, wetlands and walking trails to complete an amenity-rich package that teams with services already on offer in the area. Highland Pointe is located between McPhillips Street and Main Street and will see Chief Peguis Trail expanded in the future south of the community.

“This new neighbourhood will be close to facilities like the Seven Oaks Hospital, as well as the assortment of major retailers and services. Highland Pointe is just a quick drive to the North Perimeter and has easy access to cottage country as well as other sections of Winnipeg,” notes Carruthers.

Highland Pointe is an eco-conscious development that will feature a natural drainage system with ponds and interconnecting creeks. This drainage system is engineered to protect the community from flooding, but it also provides natural beauty to the area with adjacent trails and walkways planned. The first park area is being developed this year, consisting of a play structure, covered seating area and a path along the pond.

According to Borger, Ladco seeks out the best in class for their builder

partners, and the current slate of new home companies in Highland Pointe reflects this. Homebuilders include A&S Homes, Ventura Homes, Hilton Homes, Discovery Homes, and KDR Homes, along with Randall Homes, Signature Homes, Broadview Homes and Sterling Homes.

“We are following the success in Prairie Pointe with a group of consistent performers that have attracted buyers with exciting showhome designs,” says Borger.

KDR Homes is a good case in point. KDR has purchased lots in Highland Pointe and is anticipating strong public acceptance. According to KDR marketer and Realtor® Jennifer Gulay, Highland Pointe represents a great opportunity to obtain a new build residential property in a dynamic area that is among the fastest growing in the city.

"Highland Pointe offers a great mix with lots that offer rear lane access, lakefronts and park views, as well as standard frontages. The area will be home to both single-family and multifamily residences in a community that promises to be vibrant and enduring,” she says, inviting people to check out KDR’s website (www.kdrhomes.com) for information on new home designs and Ladco’s informative website on Highland Pointe (www.ladco.mb.ca).

Contemporary cutting-edge designs

HOMES & Neighbourhoods

KDR’s showhomes in Highland Pointe are great examples of how family-friendly home plans marry with the latest technology and modern design elements. 68 Goodman is a three-bedroom, three-bath contemporary two-storey with back lane access. 89 Goodman offers a slightly more traditional design with a front driveway and street-facing garage. Both are marketed by Realtor® Jennifer Gulay (jennifer@kdrhomes.com).

“These new properties in Highland Pointe show how we can offer home designs that are attractive to buyers in all sectors of the city,” says KDR Homes’ President Diego Vassallo, a master carpenter that started the company more than two decades ago. “Our success is all about the details. We pay a lot of attention to cabinetry, and place

a lot of elements into homes that you would typically find in custom builds,” he says, pointing to higher ceiling heights, built-in entertainment units and unique touches to range hoods as just some examples.

“We are known as a builder that creates clean looking designs that are functional for modern living, but offers the touches that help take lifestyle to the next level.”

Vassallo mentions that they have been developing new tools to make the new-home shopping experience easier and more value-laden. Now, people can take a virtual tour of properties before deciding if they want to drive over for an in-person, on-site tour.

“This service has been great for people who may be out of town or out of the country. Home shoppers can view

properties before purchase. We also have a separate portal for homeowners. As construction progresses, people can see when cabinets have been installed, and how the painters are coming along,” he says, mentioning KDR’s new marketing tagline is ‘Virtually… To Reality…'

Southern attraction

Sales have been strong for new homes in Prairie Pointe since 2015, when the 640-acre, 2500+ lot development launched as an extension of the hugely popular South Pointe neighbourhood. Like South Pointe, the new development offers close-at-hand services and links to active transportation networks, as well as additional paths, transit and auto routes. Prairie Pointe’s green spaces include playgrounds, sports fields and retention ponds.

Located at the intersection of Waverley Street and Kenaston Blvd, this community is master planned by developer Ladco, and is now into Stage 6, with another 318 lots currently being serviced.

“Prairie Pointe has something for everyone,” suggests Ladco’s vicepresident of development David Borger. “This is an inclusive community where a full range of demographics from families to empty nesters to multi-generation households can find a solution to their new home needs. While there are lots of single-family detached homes, there are also duplexes, townhomes, condos and rentals that serve to add to the overall affordability of this highly desirable neighbourhood,” he says.

The community is approaching the halfway point of development, following seven years of growth in the 630acre neighbourhood.

In addition to the parks and linear pathways along the naturalized lakes, Ladco recently completed a new fiveacre park off Eaglewood Drive. This green space features a play structure, a picnic shelter and a firepit complete with seating. Some of the province’s largest sports and recreational facilities are within convenient bicycling distance.

“2021 and into 2022 have been extremely successful, with roughly 230 lots developed and sold,” says Borger. “Overall, we are very excited by the public acceptance of this new home development,” he says, adding that they are currently servicing Stage 6 and also in the planning process for Stage 7. In this new phase, Ladco will service and release 250 lots that should see further development in 2024.

“Prairie Pointe is a place where there is a home for every budget, from entry-level to move-up homes to million-dollar walkouts,” says Ventura Custom Homes’ Vice-president of Sales and Marketing, Arin Comack. “Prairie Pointe has always been a familyfriendly neighbourhood with parks, playgrounds, and connected walking paths.” He notes that Prairie Pointe will feature nearly 60 acres of parks and green space when completed.

Here, Michael Carruthers, Ladco’s Manager of Land Development, points out that they have just added 1 km to

the linear parkway that wraps around the community behind Stage 3, and an additional 1.5 km is underway behind stages 4,5 and 6. This green path offers scenic lookouts and artistic features throughout the trail.

Realtors Rob Hutchinson and Terry Gallinger are marketing A&S Homes properties in Prairie Pointe with standalone properties as well as premium side-by-sides on walkout and lookout basement lots.

“The proximity to all shopping conveniences, the University of Manitoba, and with new schools under construction in Waverley West, Prairie Pointe is a location that offers tremendous advantages,” says Rob.

Terry agrees and points out that the development’s central location along the Kenaston corridor and quick access to the south Perimeter has been a strong selling point when people tour their display homes.

YOUR HORIZONS

At Oak Bluff West you can leave the rush of the city behind, while all of life’s more urban pursuits are still just a stone’s throw away.

Go out for a stroll in Oak Bluff West and you’ll be in good company. Residents like to take full advantage of the connective limestone pathways that wind through the community, along with local playgrounds and green spaces.

Outdoor amenities have been major draws since the first phase of construction began in 2011. One exciting new addition that is sure to be a hit is a new splash pad being installed just north of Oak Bluff School. It will have splashing buckets, a water cannon and a ring wash, which is similar to a carwash.

Respondents identified a splash pad as a priority in a survey conducted by The RM of Macdonald, and plenty of families are looking forward to enjoying the new facility.

“There are now well over 300 occupied homes in Oak Bluff West, which translates into a real sense of community,” says Tara Reid, sales and development manager for Qualico Communities.

“You can definitely see it when you visit the area. There are families and friends using the trails, kids riding their bikes and neighbours chatting on driveways. It’s very welcoming.”

Just minutes from the city, Oak Bluff West will soon welcome more families. Phase 5 of development is underway, and for the first time, it will provide lots that are less than 70 feet wide. Reid says they will appeal to homeowners

Wetlands, walking trails & wildlife on the city’s doorstep

who don’t need quite as much outdoor space, but who still want the same visually appealing architectural features.

In addition to 40-plus new singlefamily lots, Phase 5 of Oak Bluff West will include a 10-unit, bungalow-style condominium complex. It’s being designed by Randall Homes, which designed two other successful condo projects in the neighbourhood. While the new complex will share some interior elements with its predecessors, Randall Homes' vice-president Jason Jaquet says its exterior will have a completely different look.

“Whenever we do condo projects for Qualico, we’re always excited,” he says. “We push the envelope and they push back so that we come up with a great common ground for the exterior of the homes we’re building in their communities. It’s been a great working relationship.”

Phase 5 will also feature the first new wetland developed in Oak Bluff West since 2013. It will offer seating areas, shrubs, trees and a pathway that will connect to the existing trail network.

“I think one of the most important things in new communities is providing people a connected network to get out and walk,” says Mike Armstrong, operations manager for Qualico Communities.

“Not only does (this phase) offer lots that back onto this wetland that are very popular and attractive, but it also extends the walkability and connectiv-

ity of this neighbourhood, which is really cool.”

Armstrong says Qualico began creating wetlands in its communities about 20 years ago, before many municipalities began mandating them. While they enhance the natural appeal of a neighbourhood, wetlands are more than just a pretty place. They provide a welcoming habitat for many species of birds, fish and other animals, and they contribute to the health of the environment, with native grasses to filter runoff water, reducing the amount of harmful nutrients in the watershed.

With so much to offer, it’s not surprising so many families are relocating to Oak Bluff West. For more information about the community, builders and available lots visit oakbluffwest.ca

Finding the Calm

In a world that can feel crazy sometimes (okay, most of the time), it's important to find a sense of calm at home. This quest for peace and serenity has shifted colour trends away from the stark black and white palette of recent years to earth tones, such as browns and creams. In this 1,803-square-foot showhome from Warkentin Custom Homes, the warm taupes and natural walnut with soft champagne, gold and black accents create an ambiance that is both serene and elegant.

“Our inspiration for this home was to use the softer shades to bridge our clients to the new trend, and to give the home a more calming combination instead of the strong contrast of black and white that has been on the market for a while now,” says Melanie Snow, owner of Warkentin Custom Homes.

The upscale, modern bungalow was thoughtfully created in collaboration with Draftline Designs and interior designer Karen Zapp. The split bedroom design has the primary bedroom on one side of the home with two additional bedrooms opposite for privacy from kids and guests. Everyday living is made easy with an expansive foyer, tidy mudroom with built-in storage and a dedicated laundry room.

There’s no place like a home in Charleswood

HOMES & Neighbourhoods

It’s hard to believe seven years have passed since RidgeWood West began to take shape in Charleswood. The first new development in the area in decades, it promised to be a model for what a naturally beautiful neighbourhood could be.

Now entering its final phase of development, with fewer than 100 single-family lots still unspoken for, the community has come into its own, with a thoughtfully curated mix of housing options in a natural setting. Adjacent to the 6.5-kilometre Harte Trail and a short jaunt from the Assiniboine Forest, its constructed wetlands and native plants are an idyllic complement to the Prairie landscape.

“It’s become a great addition to Charleswood, and has provided people with an opportunity to build new homes and stay in Charleswood,” says Bryan Ward, vice-president of Qualico Communities. “I think it fits well with the community and is providing the variety of new homes that was envisioned from the beginning.”

If you had to choose one word to describe the housing options in RidgeWood West, chances are that word would be “diverse.” Single-family homes range from cozy bungalows to family-size two-storey models and luxury walkouts. A pair of townhome condominium developments have been extremely popular in recent years, and there are more multi-family products to come in the final phase.

“There’s a great mix of housing types and prices,” Ward says. “Like with a lot of our communities, we plan for that from the beginning so that we don’t create communities that are exclusive for certain types of housing. We want to see more variety right from the start.”

Tara Reid, sales and development manager for Qualico Communities, says the last phase of development will include new single-family lots specially designed to accommodate a single-car garage. There’s also a collection of culde-sac lots that back onto green space, as well as the community’s first sideby-side options.

The final phase will also include the last leg of a linear pathway system, which will let residents enjoy everything nature has to offer in RidgeWood West, from its southwest corner to the Harte Trail and beyond.

In addition, Randall Homes is scheduled to begin work on a multifamily project in 2023, starting with 10 two-storey townhome units. Ranging from 1,350 to 1,536 square feet, each chic, modern unit will have its own detached garage. The second phase will consist of 12 side-by-side homes. Randall Homes' vice-president Jason Jaquet says they are designed to fit in seamlessly with existing homes in the community while still offering homebuyers a variety of unique designs to choose from.

“We don’t just mirror the one on the right with the one on the left.

Just because you own a side-by-side, it doesn’t mean you shouldn’t have a distinct identity with your home,” Jaquet says.

If your dream is to build new in Charleswood, Qualico Communities’ Bryan Ward acknowledges that time will soon be running out for homebuyers who want to settle in RidgeWood West.

“I think there will be a sense of urgency because the next phase or next opportunity for development in Charleswood could be quite far away,” Ward says. “It could be the last chance to get into Charleswood for quite a few years.”

EXPLORE BUILDING NEW IN SAGE CREEK – IT’S FULL OF UNEXPECTED POSSIBILITIES.

What’s so unexpected about Sage Creek?

For those who don’t venture to the southeast edge of the city often, they’re not sure what to expect when they find themselves in Sage Creek. New communities can be lumped into bad stereotypes with images of rows upon rows of uniform houses, one blending into the next.

Which might explain why one of the most common expressions heard from new visitors to Sage Creek is “Wow! I had no idea all this was here.”

“I can’t tell you how many times I have had friends or acquaintances remark about how great and diverse the community is. I have to laugh because I am always telling people this, but I guess you need to see it to believe it,” says Katie Doerksen, marketing and community relations manager with Qualico Communities.

“Sage Creek offers individuals and families at every stage of life an opportunity to set roots in a truly complete community,” continues Doerksen.

Starting in 2006, Qualico began selling lots to single-family homebuilders. However, the vision for a diverse community was there from the beginning. The goal was always to develop a commercial district and provide a variety of housing types.

Today, Sage Creek boasts a bustling Village Centre, offering residents and visitors access to a plethora of services with more to come. The diversity in housing options has also expanded

greatly in recent years; it now offers four apartment style rentals, a variety of townhome condominiums, and will soon have apartment style condominiums.

Streetside Developments is in for plan approval with Sage Village Condominiums, a five-storey, 73-unit condo project. Streetside is planning for a fall/winter sales launch, and there will be two- and three-bedroom units available.

Another new project coming to Sage Creek will be an important addition to the community - an assisted living facility. The team at Janzen Projects Inc hopes to begin construction on The Meadows Retirement Residence in late 2022. This comes after already opening two very popular 55+ buildings in the community: Sage Creek Apartments and Sage Creek Pointe.

“We’re really excited to be developing this in the community, offering the next natural step for many of our residents in our 55+ buildings to an assisted living facility,” says Adam Janzen, Janzen Projects Inc. Adam has worked in property development and management with a seniors focus for 15 years. “It is always our goal to give seniors the ability and opportunity to age in place,” he explains.

The Meadows Retirement Residence, which will be located along Boulevard des Hivernants north of Sage Creek Pointe, will offer individuals a wide

variety of services and amenities to make day-to-day living more comfortable, while providing many opportunities for residents to prolong their independence.

“There will be just shy of 180 units with three layouts to choose from, including one- and two-bedroom options,” explains Janzen. “Another neat feature are the guest suites available to rent for out-of-town guests visiting loved ones.”

For those looking to build their dream home, there are still many opportunities to purchase a singlefamily lot through one of Sage Creek’s premium or custom builders.

“We have a number of lots left to release in Phase 9A and 9B, including our first duplexes in the community,” says Tara Reid, sales and development manager with Qualico Communities.

“Servicing for Phase 10A and 10B is also underway, with expected completion by end of this year,” she adds.

“It’s an exciting time in Sage Creek to see all the development taking place, and we can expect another exciting number of years ahead. If you are still not convinced, we encourage you to come out to experience this beautiful community for yourself,” recommends Doerksen.

Avisit to Taylor Farm in Headingley can feel a bit like taking a trip back in time.

While the streets are lined with beautiful modern homes, monuments to the community’s homestead past have pride of place. Three cairns pay tribute to Headingley School, Holy Trinity Cemetery and John Taylor, one of the original settlers. Another large masonry feature near Bridge Road pays homage to Taylor, and there are decorative nodes at key sites to share details of the area’s history.

“We are pretty proud of telling the story of the area along walkways and pathways in the subdivision and preserving that history. We’re trying to do that more and more in our subdivisions,” says Mike Armstrong, operations manager for Qualico Communities. That attention to historical detail is continuing as Phase 4 of development is now underway.

A new road being built to give Phase 4 homebuyers easy access to Portage Avenue will be called McGuckin Road, in honour of Malcolm and Ruby McGuckin, who emigrated from Northern Ireland in 1949 and settled in Headingley. They operated a mink ranch and later the RBM Gardens market. Their son, Roy McGuckin, built and still owns Thunder Rapids Amusement Park, north of the Assiniboine River.

Along with the road name, a striking brick-and-steel installation planned for the newest entranceway into the community will acknowledge the McGuckin family’s many contributions to the community.

“It’s a pretty neat honour,” says Roy McGuckin. “I think my dad would love it. He would love that he and my mom were remembered that way. I think it would be a huge honour for them both.”

While Qualico Communities embraces the history of Taylor Farm, it is also contributing to a bright future for modern homesteaders. Tara Reid, sales and development manager for Qualico Communities, says the latest phase of development will consist of 56 new lots, ranging from 64 to 90 feet wide.

It will also include three new wetland areas and a naturalized trail system that will connect to existing trails in the community.

A select number of lots will offer lake walkouts that back directly onto the wetlands. It’s the first time lake walkout lots have been made available in Taylor Farm, and Reid predicts that builders will be inspired to create designs specifically to take advantage of breathtaking views.

Taylor Farm’s natural beauty has been a draw from the start. It sits along the Assiniboine River, which offers a variety of recreational opportunities,

from canoeing in summer to skating and snowmobiling in winter. There’s also a five-acre mature basswood forest that is home to plants and animals not usually seen on the Prairies. With a lifespan of about 200 years, basswood trees are literally a deeply rooted part of Headingley’s history, and the forest is being preserved for generations to come.

“It’s breathtaking,” Armstrong says of the forest. “That’s an amenity that Taylor Farm has to offer that a lot of subdivisions don’t have.”

Building beautiful

Sherwood Developments is raising the bar in 50+ apartment living with their new project, The Pearl at 250 and 260 River Road. Located on a choice multi-acre property set alongside the Red River in south Winnipeg, The Pearl will offer 128 refined one and two-

bedroom suites designed to enhance mature luxury forward lifestyles.

The first property at 250 River Road will open next summer. It's sister property at 260 River Road is coming in the summer of 2024.

“We started taking reservations last year,” says Louis Pereira, Co-President of Sherwood Developments (2016) Ltd. “We had a waiting list from our previous projects and were able to bring some of these people on board. There is also a demand from those who have been planning for retirement and see this development as a perfect opportunity to downsize while maintaining

amenities,” he adds, noting that the project is already 70 percent reserved.

Moving people from one development waiting list to another proved to be relatively easy, thanks to the considerable reputation Sherwood Developments has built over the years. Louis comments that it all started with his father Fausto Pereira, who launched a luxury condo development called The Waterfront in 2000. He followed this with The Excelsior in 2005, and then The Renaissance in St. Norbert in 2007 before switching to building for the rental market with a property called 86 Niakwa in 2011, followed by a 425-

unit residence on St. Mary Road (The Enclave).

Fausto retired in 2018, but his sons Jason and Louis have carried on the tradition with their first apartment rental, a 172-unit residence in Southdale (Vista 429), and now on their next development, The Pearl, a property they launched in 2020 with the acquisition of the stunning riverfront lot.

“A big part of our success is our breadth of experience and ability to deliver on quality and design,” says Louis. “We are an all-in-one builder. We do the land acquisition and design, and have our own equipment and crews. We do our own marketing and handle the property management of each building ourselves. My brother Jason, who owns 50 percent of the company, is on-site hammer in hand every day to oversee construction. For us, each project is like building our own homes, and this is what is helping to make The Pearl so appreciated in the local market.”

Beauty and comfort

At The Pearl, it all starts with the lot and location. The site is adjacent to the Red River on an ample property that offers 3.4 acres of well-landscaped green space beyond the residences.

“We placed 78 percent of the parking spaces below ground to maximize the potential for the park-like setting,” says Louis, noting that the location is close to services like St. Vital Shopping Centre and to facilities such as the University of Manitoba. It is on major bike routes, is close to transit and the proximity to Bishop Grandin means quick connectivity to routes to lake country.

The building itself is constructed with comfort in mind. Floors are solid concrete, and walls between suites have been doubled to ensure privacy and quiet. Insulation is extensive to create a building that is effortlessly warm in winter and cool in summer. In conjunction with state-of-the-art mechanical systems, The Pearl is projected to be 25 percent more energy efficient than code standard buildings. Even the parking garage design has been tailored to please with a grass-covered roof, and the building features ramps, entrance sidewalks and exit stairs that are heated to prevent winter slipping. This thinking extends to The Pearl's public areas, where designers stipulated textured noslip granite flooring amid the impressive hotel-style lobbies.

Active lifestyles are well supported at The Pearl. The grounds offer a 3.4acre park-like setting with numerous seating areas throughout the property. There are two on-site gyms, each featuring two treadmills, two ellipticals, two stationary bikes, a Universal weight machine, a rower and sets of free weights. Fitness rooms are fitted with banks of windows that allow for beautiful views while residents work out.

For those who want to gather friends and families without using their suites, The Pearl offers two 40-seat penthousestyle lounges that feature floor-toceiling windows, a full kitchen and a two-piece bathroom. The property even has two fully furnished bachelor-sized guest suites (complete with kitchenette) for visiting friends and family.

Suite attractions

Suites are available in one-bedroom, one-bedroom plus den, and two-bedroom (two bath) and two-bedroom plus den (two bath) configurations. There are a total of 13 floor plans from which to choose. Suites range in size from 800 square feet to 1407 square feet, with good availability now on offer.

Interiors are well appointed with contemporary design and the latest technology and comfort features. For example, kitchens boast white granite countertops (from KCD Quartz & Granite) and ceramic backsplashes, in addition to the latest stainless steel appliances like French-door fridges, slide-in stovetops with convection ovens, large capacity dishwashers, and over-the-range microwaves. Cabinets (from Cornerstone Kitchens) are Shakerstyle with soft close features on both drawers and doors. Lighting (from Total Lighting) is LED throughout, and dining rooms have full dimmable capability (Emerald, Gem & Diamond suites have a dimmable living room lighting feature). The Pearl’s luxury vinyl flooring dampens sound and comes with a sand maple finish that is on point with current design trends.

According to Pereira, the goal was to take The Pearl to higher design heights by building on its past successes. “We could see which amenities and design attributes excited our tenants and condo owners. We have sought to build these into every aspect of this new project,” he says, pointing to the bulkhead-free 9-foot ceiling height, the 9-foot oversized patio doors and the large awning windows with transom (from All Weather Windows).

The developers relied on strong longterm relationships with local suppliers, including McMunn & Yates, who supplied building materials for the project, KCD Quartz & Granite for countertops, Cornerstone Kitchens for cabinetry, Total Lighting for lighting products,

and All Weather Windows for windows, to name a few.

“We went with Kohler plumbing fixtures for their lasting quality and great appearance (brushed fingerprint resistant finishes). We also upped the ante with five-foot walk-in showers with glass doors in all the suites and placed five-foot soaker tubs in second bathrooms,” he notes.

Other key attributes of suites include comfort height toilets, ceiling-mounted heating and cooling vents with individual climate controls. There are also blackout roller blinds in bedrooms and fabric-clad vertical blinds for living rooms and patio doors.

Another important aspect of The Pearl is the selection of Easy Living suites. Fourteen units have been uniquely designed to include a host of extra amenities that provide residents with the option to age in place.

“We understand that as people grow older their needs change if they want to continue living an independent lifestyle. They may not wish to move to a new apartment or facility that can accommodate a wheelchair or offer accessible washroom and kitchen features. At The Pearl, we have taken this need to heart and have crafted these suites with the ability to be customizable at any date, so the appearance of the suite only changes when requested by the resident,” says Pereira.

“Our business model seeks a low turnover of tenants. To accomplish this, we are building properties where people can be happy where they live. For us, this means paying attention to the details and filling the property with all the extras that create not just added value, but pride of residence.”

Innovations on hand

Silestone Loft Collection is a great example of product innovation found at Cosentino’s Winnipeg showroom and distribution centre at 3020 Red Fife Road in the Brookside Industrial Park. The Silestone Loft Collection offers colours inspired by iconic neighbourhoods in the global community and are the first to be produced using Cosentino’s exclusive HybriQ+ technology, a process utilizing reused raw materials.

According to the company, the inspiration behind the collection dates back to the mid-20th century, a decade when abandoned factories, massive workshops and warehouses were repurposed into loft apartments.

For example, Silestone Camden looks back to the community’s history where exposed brick gave façades their distinctive appearance to the London area town. Camden features a soft, delicate and consistent grey, with a fine grain and subtle white veining. Coloured a versatile cement grey, Camden can be incorporated easily with any décor.

Silestone Poblenou takes its inspiration from the industrial revolution in Barcelona. Poblenou offers a warm shade of grey with subtle veining and a sandy background that brings brightness and provides a comforting texture and familiar ambiance.

Silestone Seaport looks to a small seaside community in southeastern Manhattan. Here, the past coexists peacefully alongside docks, restaurants and shops. Seaport’s colour is similar to dark, worn cement with striking white shades that blend perfectly with its background.

Silestone Nolita also turns to New York for its inspiration. Nolita is a neighbourhood just north of the city’s ‘Little Italy’ and is known as a site of unique distinctiveness with Avante

Garde appearance. Look to Nolita for a cold, industrial feel, blended with shades of whites and light greys that work to create elegance and fine lines that are free of strong contrasts.

Silestone Corktown is all about the light and shade of Detroit’s Corktown neighbourhood. The streets of Corktown offer iconic historic vistas that harken back to the city’s heritage as Motorcity. Silestone Corktown gives the most intense, solid and deep black of the Silestone Loft collection.

Home is where the heart is

Even after children grow up and move out of the familial home, it's still that go-to spot for making new memories together. Kitchen Craft updated this client's space to reflect the changes of the family dynamic as their own kids left home.

“This home is central to many family gatherings, and creating a space where everyone could be together while still providing a warm space for just themselves was an important point I stayed focused on,” says Leo Conrad, Kitchen Craft designer, who created a modern look while maintaining the home's warm country feel.

The eight-foot island is perfect for socializing while also functioning as an efficient prep area for the parallel stove area. A double waste centre incorporated into the island makes for efficient clean up. The adjacent wall has space

for a coffee and beverage bar to keep traffic out of the production area.

Kitchen Craft's Soho flat surface door in satin white Thermofoil was chosen for durability and easy maintenance, offset by the island's thunder maple

Shindico Realty scores again with Taylor Residences, the exciting new rental properties coming to Taylor Ave in Winnipeg’s Grant Park neighbourhood - one of the city’s bestserviced communities with top-tier recreation and entertainment, shopping, and medical, and education facilities virtually at the doorstep.

According to Shindico’s Vice President, Property Management and Development, Alex Akman, two Tyndall stone-clad six-storey buildings will each feature 124 suites designed to accommodate contemporary luxury lifestyles.

“Shindico has been at the forefront of Winnipeg’s apartment rental scene for over 40 years. Today, we own and manage over 700 multi-family residences throughout Winnipeg and around the province. We listened closely to what tenants told us about wants and needs,” he says, adding that over the five years of project development, they toured properties in Winnipeg, Toronto and Ottawa, discussed the design and market needs with a range of stakeholders, and finely tuned the offering by listening to renters.

Akman remarks that this input resulted in a design featuring thick concrete construction and large triple pane windows for quieter apartment living and maximum energy efficiency. People also told them they were looking for larger suites and units that feature fullsize balconies.

Taylor Residences offer 11 floor plans. One-bedroom suites range from 738 square feet to 986 square feet with

Rental Renaissance

one-bath shower/tub combos. The twobedroom units extend from 1,152 square feet to 1,486 square feet, and provide two bathrooms with walk-in showers with glass doors. Balconies in many suites are more than 35 feet in length, an aspect that delivers light-filled space to every unit.

“Suites also come with easy-to-clean luxury flooring, Kohler fixtures in the bathrooms, quartz countertops and a full package of stainless steel appliances for the kitchen that include a Frenchdoor refrigerator and slide-in cooktops for the latest appearance and convenience. Kitchens are fitted with extralarge pantry cabinets,” says Akman, noting that the upper cabinet sets extend to the ceiling to further maximize storage space. Elements such as large walk-in closets and utility/laundry room (washer and dryer are included) make a strong statement regarding the overall storage capability and functionality in each suite.

Planners also addressed access and mobility with designs that deliver wider doorways in public areas and suites. “We could see that the opportunity to age in place is an important consideration for many people. With this in mind, we placed grab bars and comfort height toilets in units, and made doorways easy to navigate for those who need to use a walker or wheelchair,” he says.

Parking is also a breeze, thanks to covered and heated underground stalls that, at 10 feet to 11 feet in width, are wider than average and make getting

in an out of a vehicle less of a squeeze. The garages also offer electric charging for EVs.

The buildings will sport residents’ lounges, multi-purpose rooms for group gatherings and fitness centres. “The property features a fully outfitted wellness gym, the multi-purpose room has a full-service kitchen with bathrooms and a coat closet for guests, and the lounge areas feature Tyndall stone fireplaces and a south facing deck with private green space," notes Akman.

“Overall, the amenities and design of Taylor Residences resulted from our outreach to the community. We listened to what people told us when we asked what they wanted in new rental units. These properties will take Winnipeg’s apartment rental market to new heights, and they will do it in one of the most walkable and best-serviced communities in the city.”

Transcona Roofing has been helping Manitobans to keep their lids on since 1959. Back then, they had only two employees and a single asphalt kettle. Over the decades, Winnipeg-based Transcona Roofing has completed over $600 million of work in the Manitoba marketplace. The company has grown to more than 100 employees with hundreds of roofs under their care to become a leader in roofing installation, inspection, and maintenance, thanks to its breadth of experience and the skill of its workers.

“Our reputation is the main reason for our success and our longevity is another,” says Rich Marchetti, President and CEO of Transcona Roofing. “We treat every customer exactly in the same way, no matter the size or the scale of the project. We’ve worked hard to ensure that all our employees, regardless of their roles or responsibilities, treat all clients with equal respect and courtesy focussing on quality and safety,” he adds.

“Another key element to our success is our focus on our core values. We’ve built our entire team around those values, which are — being professional, driven to succeed, implementing innovation to drive efficiency, and to remain humble and people-focused,” he says, mentioning that they also offer a comprehensive in-house staff training program called Transcona Roofing University. In 2020, they launched an internal continuous improvement program to develop the company’s skillsets further, teaching key staff in the principles of lean management with the goal of implementing one improvement per day.

Technology-enhanced roof inspections

On the technological front, Transcona Roofing embraces new technology and

PEAK Performance

includes it in their daily processes, from apps that capture their safety document management to electronic timecards and roof inspection software. Indeed, Transcona Roofing offers infrared roof inspections that are a cost-effective, non-destructive method to gauge roofing challenges before they become a problem.

“Infrared thermography is the only diagnostic technology that lets you instantly visualize and verify thermal performance. Our infrared cameras show you thermal problems, quantify them with precise non-contact temperature measurement, and document them automatically in seconds with professional easy-to-create IR reports,” says Marchetti.

“Our RoofCare+ program is our flagship roof management program designed for commercial buildings with flat roofs. We have over 600 roofs under our annual inspection program. Roof inspections are all completed by Red Seal-trained roofers. The goal of our RoofCare+ program is to catch small maintenance items before they turn into larger, more expensive building envelope issues. The end goal is to extend the life of the roof. We often see commercial roofs fail prematurely due to a lack of maintenance, mostly because they’re out of sight and out of mind.”

Marchetti notes that the cost of a leak repair is small compared to the cost of major interior damage. “The cost of preventive maintenance is even cheaper - it saves the building owner money

and extends the roof's life. Increasing the longevity of the roof protects the investment. And a hidden bonus of the inspections is that it creates long-term relationships," he says.

“Transcona Roofing offers a service department with twelve specialized crews to handle roof repair and alterations, preventative maintenance, and provide 24-hour emergency water infiltration repair service. We are qualified to make repairs to all types of roof systems and are approved to complete warranty repairs on the vast majority of roof manufacturers’ warranted systems,” states Marchetti.

“Our biggest asset is the team we’ve developed, who can produce projects safely with a high level of quality - on budget and on time,” he says, inviting people to discover the difference experience and technology can bring to roofing challenges.
