day I knew nothing about – National Dog Day. Founded by Colleen Paige in 2004, National Dog Day falls on August 26th every year, and is a special nod to our loyal four-legged companions – a day to recognize and celebrate those wonderful pooches who love us so unconditionally.

aking a discussion about silhouettes and translating it into a home design that is as functional as it is stunning, can only be achieved by a team with experience and vision. In this case, it was the team at Maric Homes.

This five-bedroom, 2,800-square-foot, custom-built home at 28 Waterstone Drive in South Pointe gives decidedly new meaning to the term “open concept.” And it starts right at the threshold.

“The inspiration for this home came from a discussion about silhouettes,” says Peri Maric, vicepresident of architectural design, Maric Homes. “We wanted to have the staircase revealed before you enter the home. As you’re approaching the front entry, the two-storey glass wall at the front and rear of the home creates a silhouette of the staircase.”

The staircase in question is a successful experiment in utilizing light. The Maric Homes team incorporated an open, single-stringer staircase with glass railings supplied by Fort Rouge Glass. The staircase is mated to a steel and glass catwalk on the second floor, which is fully visible from below. Its few obstructive structural components allow light to travel freely throughout much of the home’s main floor.

“We even incorporated an LED strip along the back edge of the catwalk glass, and it lights up the exterior edge in blue/green at night. It’s stunning, and a small example of the attention to detail found in all of our homes,” says Maric.

The staircase is in keeping with the home’s linear architecture and light-filled theme, but one might ask why the builder made it such a strong and visually stunning presence?

For the design team at Maric Homes, the answer lies in the balance of form and function.

“The stairwell can be strictly utilitarian and just for moving from one floor to another, and that’s fine,” says Maric. “But there is an opportunity to make it beautiful, and why not? It is one of the single-most utilized parts of the home, and it’s a nice feeling to admire a little bit of beauty when you’re doing the most mundane tasks.”

Clearly, light and space were the main design components of this home. “We wanted to keep the house bright and give its inhabitants and visitors a sense of spaciousness and airiness,” says Maric.

The windows, which were supplied by JELD-WEN, are key to achieving this sensation of lightness.

The builder capitalized on the home’s situation on an east/west axis, by incorporating nearly as much glazing on the front of the home as it has behind it. They made a conscious design decision to have the great room as a part of the front of the house instead of anchored solely at the back. This allows the sunshine to stream through the entire home, all day, if desired.

“Windows allow you to control light and bring the outside in – the more sky and nature you can see from the inside, the better,” says Maric. “What’s bigger or prettier than a prairie sunset?”

Any concerns over privacy in a home with this many windows were addressed with simple, effective window dressings supplied by Interior Illusions, the company that also provided the furnishings, artwork and interior design expertise to showcase the home to its greatest advantage.

4The South Pointe home’s exterior is a reflection of its interior: warm, clean and modern. The low maintenance façade features stone sourced from a Minnesota quarry, paired with Longboard aluminum siding. Rich wood tones found in the garage doors installed by Overhead Door complement the home’s design and surrounding landscaping.

“Interior Illusions has the same approach to their work as ours: the best materials, attention to detail, and subtly beautiful,” says Maric. “We have a lot of synergy when we work together, and it’s always exciting.”

Artificial lighting is an important consideration in a home of this size and with its soaring ceilings. Liberal use of potlights, punctuated by a number of suspended light fixtures from Total Lighting that befit the overall design, deliver the necessary light for ambience, task and safety once the sun sets.

Despite the abundance of glass and large spaces, the home exudes warmth, thanks to liberal use of maple in everything from the trim, to the Kitchen Craft cabinetry in the kitchen and hardwood flooring installed throughout by Curtis Carpets. After all, the people that live

here are at the core of Maric Homes’ design philosophy.

“We don’t want our homes to ever feel cold or uninviting. By using recognizable, elemental materials in new ways, we keep our designs at the cutting edge,” says Maric.

The Maric Homes team manages to maintain their design aesthetic while keeping their clients’ comfort and needs firmly top-of-mind.

For example, they incorporated the unique vertical wine storage unit into a high traffic, high visibility area of the home. Rather than relegated to a basement cellar, it serves as a functional piece of art. Instead of detracting from the overall design, it is a seamless part of it.

“We consciously decided to include the storage unit as a centrepiece,” says Maric. “Its central location between the kitchen, dining and entertaining areas gave it perfect utility, and since it’s temperature controlled, it can house every kind of wine. Since the functional aspect was fulfilled, why not make it beautiful? “ The heart of the home – the kitchen – is large, bright, and conveniently adjacent to the rear entryway. Minimizing the distance between garage and kitchen makes the trip of lugging groceries from the car much shorter.

The kitchen features low profile, streamlined plumbing fixtures by Robinson Lighting & Bath, which also provided all of the fixtures, bathtubs and sinks in the home’s four bathrooms, including the ensuite.

Homeowners and their guests can relax and enjoy the great room, replete with a massive piece of sculptural woodwork on one wall.

It adds warmth and scale to the room while serving as a built-in entertainment unit.

“This was an exercise in balance – we needed a large, spectacular piece, but not one that would be overwhelming in a negative sense,” says Maric. “It’s really a part of the room itself, and not a separate structure. You’re always aware

of it, but it’s never distracting. And it is offset from the wall itself, creating a small reveal along its edges that house LED lights. It looks even cooler at night.”

A low wall with gas fireplace insert subtly separates the great room from a 1970s-inspired sunken “conversation pit.” Here, people can relax, enjoy a drink, and catch up in a relaxed, cozy atmosphere.

The walkout basement mirrors the same details found upstairs. It features an expansive bar and wine storage area, adjacent to an entertaining area with a floating fireplace and maple wall structure. There’s also a screened room below the large main floor patio, which leads to a backyard complete with several putting greens.

5The steel and glass catwalk on the second floor is clearly visible from below – another experiment in the use of light. A glassed-in, temperature-controlled, wine storage unit is intended as a unique centerpiece: beautiful as well as functional.

The same attention to detail on the inside is reflected on the home’s low maintenance exterior.

“We were after a specific look: warm, clean, modern,” says Maric.

Achieving this look meant sourcing the exterior stone from a Minnesota quarry. This was the first showhome in the city to use Longboard aluminum siding from British Columbia. Timber beams were used to frame the front entrance.

“We carried the timbers into the conversation pit area, explicitly marrying the exterior and interior,” notes Maric.

Springhill Lumber supplied most of the other building materials used in this showpiece property.

Once again, Maric Homes has successfully balanced unique design, quality materials, form and function with the inviting warmth that makes a house a home.

From this remarkable residence, prairie sunrises and sunsets will never be seen in quite the same light.

MAKING A HOUSE A HOME A new showhome blessed with an abundance of windows on the outside and glass on the inside required special treatment to accentuate its modern, cutting-edge design, while creating a warm, welcoming interior.

Maric Homes relied on the expertise of Interior Illusions to introduce the soft elements that can make a house a home.

Based in Winnipeg’s Exchange District, Interior Illusions is renowned for its design-forward home furnishings and accessories, a Hunter Douglas Blind Gallery, custom drapery / bedding services, and top-notch decorators and interior designers like Michelle Chisick.

Chisick and other members of the Interior Illusions team began the process of decorating the home by meeting with Maric Homes to review samples and gain a clear vision.

Together, they finalized colours, textures and fabrics.

A palette of taupes, creams and greys emerged to inform their decisions on window coverings, furnishings, artwork, area rugs, lamps and accessories. This includes the modern angled sectional sofa in light grey selected for the great room.

“We chose a lighter fabric to keep a visual airiness to the space, nothing that felt heavy,” says Chisick. “Without intruding too far into the space, the angled piece creates that cozy corner everyone fights over!”

The window coverings required particular attention in this home, notes Chisick. “We chose a wall-to-wall application that would extend the look of the windows instead of

defining the individual window shapes. We used a sheer fabric that lets in light but still offers some privacy and light control – very important in a house with this many windows.”

“We have greatly enlarged the service area to 16,000 square feet,” adds Operations Manager Dean Peterson. He notes that the area features 16 state-of-the-art work bays, as well as an additional three-bay detail centre. In addition, the facility offers a six-vehicle customer drivethru reception area to more efficiently serve the needs of after-sales customers.

More, the new location has four bays dedicated to only Mercedes-Benz Sprinter vans. This is an important new capability that works well for the growing fleets of these uncommonly capable work vehicles (fleet customers receive an additional 10 percent off service bills).

“We can really limit the downtime of Sprinters that have to come in for service. This means our customers get in and out faster, and get back to making money with these vans,” says Dean.

This means our crew can really get to know our customers.”

In fact, the dealership’s three shuttle drivers are often on a first name basis with customers and work as a kind of triage unit that can help speed car pick-up or explain some of the service. bays are surgery clean. Each technician has a full suite of custom designed tool cabinets, computer station, and bench areas, as well as a group of dedicated hoses to dispense any fluid necessary for each vehicle. There is even a special closet in each suite for waste oil and other fluids.

“We have the very latest equipment. This means less time diagnosing issues,” says Ryan.

“For example, we have a new digital alignment system that we use on every car that comes

into the pre-service area. We can tell in under three minutes if Winnipeg roads have disturbed the wheel alignment. Before customers have even seen their service orders, we can advise on whether an adjustment is necessary. This can save our customers hundreds of dollars on tire wear and gas consumption. It’s just one of the little things we do that make big differences.”

Well-crafted fresh eats Corydon’s “Little Italy” is getting a new lease on life. Always looking to jazz up Winnipeg nightlife, Sam Colosimo (who helms the happening clubs of Blush and Desire, in additional to popular eateries like Market Burger and Brooklyn’s Bistro) has recruited one Dustin Pajak to help him shake up the dining scene.

Luckily, Pajak is born to cook; the budding chef’s family not only both devoted themselves to the restaurant biz, they were also avid gardeners. And they practiced what they preached: eat fresh and craft it well.

Together, Colosimo and Pajak have masterminded what is simply the city’s tastiest spot for homestyle Italian classics.

First, you get seduced by the sleek, ultra-urban interior design complete with striking lighting, textured wall treatments, handsome leather seating and an expansive street-side patio. Then you get to match that with a fun, refined and satisfying menu.

All the bases are covered: starters, entrées, pasta and wood-fired pizza. And everything’s lovingly made with fresh ingredients and dished out generously. Starters set the bar.

Fritto Misto is how calamari ought to be; a decadent pile of plump breaded shrimp, scallops, cauliflower and zucchini are prime for delicious dipping in fiery diavolo tomato sauce.

And nothing beats the flavours and textures of the balsamic-accented Tuscana salad, stunning us with its bubbly black kale, cubed red beets, chewy dried cherries, crunchy fried almonds and rich goat cheese.

For pasta, the house-made gnocchi is highly recommended, paired with a simple rose sauce to complement – there are no regrets. These warm and pillowy dumplings are dreamily lathered in basil-infused tomato, cream and ricotta sauce.

Wood-fired pizza’s also a must. The zesty and tomatoey “Teo” is loaded with white shrimp, sweet Calabrian chili and giardindiera (a hot tangy relish of peppers, celery, carrot, cauliflower and gherkins) then topped with bocconcini and provolone cheeses.

The crust is perfectly cracker-like where it counts, and smoky and chewy at the edge.

To wash it down, there’s a comprehensive wine and beer list to choose from, and cocktails are bang-on. The Aperol Spritz is a playful but boozey Orange Crush! Syrupy aperol gets fizzy with soda and Prosecco; and the Mano Mojito is a juicy quencher with rum, lime, fresh mint, soda water and ripe berries.

Desserts include the likes of Neapolitan sundaes, cheesy mascarpone and meringuey pavlovas. Finish with classic Italian espresso; cappuccinos come frothy and intense!

Penny Loaves from Heaven: A New Bakery Opens Its Hearth to the Neighbourhood

What’s the greatest thing since sliced bread? How about REAL bread?

What makes The Pennyloaf Bakery’s leavened wares extra heavenly? Answer: traditional wild yeast starter.

projects researched and implemented strategies to assist the city’s homeless.

You know what we mean: hot from the hearth, thick and crusty on the outside, soft and chewy on the inside. The way bread was meant to be.

“In the sourdough starter there’s lactic bacteria and yeast,” Suzanne explains. “You feed it over a long period of time, then take a piece of it and put it in your bread.

It is the ‘original’ yeast.”

This intense work brought Suzanne to a crossroads.

Faced with imminent burnout, she had to ask herself some tough questions, such as, “What do I want to do?”

Instinctually, she turned to what she loved: baking.

This fall, Winnipeg can expect loaves and loaves of the yeasty heartwarming stuff when intrepid baker / entrepreneur Suzanne Gessler opens The Pennyloaf Bakery at 858 Corydon Avenue (www.thepennyloaf. com). Indeed, as this article is being written, Suzanne is orchestrating the construction of the bakery’s centerpiece: the oven.

“At The Pennyloaf, we are baking in a ‘Black’ oven,” Suzanne explains. “The fire is in the hearth. Before we all had conventional ovens, the community shared these hearths for everyone’s baking.”

At over 15,000 pounds, the oven is not only an imposing edifice of functional masonry, but also a rarity.

That’s because The Pennyloaf’s hearth is the only one of its kind in Winnipeg. Surprising - since these ovens are perfect for baking.

“The oven’s heat is complete. You get it from the base going into the bread, circulating around the bread and radiating from the walls. That’s how you get that chewy good taste, the gloss on the inside and crust on the outside.”

How it works: First, the daily wood-firing. Second, the hearth is swept clear of ash. And lastly, the buns get popped inside.

And these aren’t run-of-the-mill buns! They’re wholesomely handmade with fresh, local and organic ingredients: cinnamon walnut, cranberry and almond, pumpkin, flax and poppy seed, oatmeal and almond, walnut and cambozola ... there’s even a Bird Seed Loaf.

“I’ll take advantage of what’s at the farmers’ market, whether it’s apples for Cinnamon Raison Apple Bread, or different kinds of local cheeses and whole grains.

I play with whatever I’ve got. Yesterday, I was playing with rosemary and made a Rosemary Cheddar Bread,” she recounts.

But this baker knows how to keep things simple, too - straight-up baguette, sourdough, pumpernickel, soda bread and brioche are also on the menu. (And trust me Dear Reader -They are DELICIOUS!)

“I’ve been maintaining mine for two years,” she says proudly. “There are starters that have been around for hundreds of years. Mothers would give it to daughters.”

Traditional bread leavener is a natural (and smart!) choice for Suzanne. It enhances flavour and aroma, creates crusty and chewy textures, and makes for beautiful loaves.

Recent research is also uncovering that gluten-sensitive bread lovers can enjoy easier digestion, thanks to its micro-goodness. “Starter breaks down gluten,” Suzanne confirms.

Black oven loaves bake better, too. While conventional ovens can take about one hour to bake a loaf, a black oven takes a mere 20 minutes. Thanks to this astounding thermal efficiency, it doesn’t stop there.

“After bread, you could bake cookies, then cakes, roast a chicken, dehydrate herbs, roast vegetables; the heat will just keep coming,” Suzanne marvels.

Once The Pennyloaf Bakery’s daily 100 loaves hit the shelf, the hearth radiates on to host pastries, croissants, cookies, scones, biscuits and all manner of pies, tarts and cakes.

But Suzanne isn’t sinking her heart into this hearth entirely alone. The Women’s Enterprise Centre has provided valuable resources for Suzanne to successfully transform 858 Cordyon Avenue into a home for her bakery. The new space will also boast a complete baker’s kitchen, retail space, patio, office and plenty of parking for customers.

“I’ve always had a little dream about running my own bakery,” Suzanne admits.

A big leap of faith! That’s because “Suzanne the Baker” was once “Suzanne the City Planner” - with some serious accomplishments, including Main Street’s recent Bell Hotel Supportive Housing Complex development, as well as the United Way & Main Street Project’s “Winnipeg Street Health Report 2011.” Both

At the same time, this baker needs no alibi. “I have been baking all my life - since I was a kid. I remember taking out this Disney baking book from the school library weekly... weekly. Do you know what I mean?”

After completing Red River College’s Professional Baking and Patisserie Program, Suzanne sought work experience in bakeries here at home and as far away as California - all with one goal in mind: opening a bakery.

She chuckles that most of her work placements were “baptism by fire.” Once she did nothing but pick fresh basil leaves for an entire week.

“I didn’t even touch any dough,” she laughs. “It was like The Karate Kid - wax on, wax off. But I learned so much. I understand the value of fresh ingredients - it does make a difference.”

While Suzanne admits that a bakery isn’t as ambitious as solving homelessness, she does call attention to the name of her bakery - “The Pennyloaf” - to signal her ongoing commitment to fostering positive community connections.

The first “penny loaf” was baked in 1266 by an act of the English government. The small loaf was intended to be affordable food for the poor, costing only one penny. To that tune, Suzanne reveals some big plans for her bakery, including providing work training for emerging bakers like herself, and of course, continually fostering a supportive work environment for her staff and customers.

“I am trying to figure out ways to give back. Bakeries are like grocery stores,” Suzanne affirms. “They anchor the neighbourhood.”

Toasted Zucchini Tomato Frittata Sandwiches

4 eggs Salt and pepper to taste 1 tbsp (15 mL) canola oil 1 medium sized zucchini, thinly sliced 2 Roma tomatoes, chopped 1 clove garlic, minced 2 tbsp (25 mL) fresh oregano, chopped 8 slices crusty Italian bread 4 tbsp (50 mL) commercial tomato pesto 2 or 3 handfuls of baby kale or arugula In a medium bowl, whisk eggs, salt and pepper.

Set aside. Pour canola oil into a large non-stick frying pan. Place over medium-high heat. Add zucchini and sauté for about 2-3 minutes. Add tomatoes, garlic and oregano. Continue to cook 1-2 minutes longer. Spread vegetables in an even layer in the pan. Pour egg mixture over top of the vegetables. Reduce heat to low and cook about 2 minutes. Cover pan and cook about 5 minutes, until top of egg mixture has set. For a golden brown top, place frittata under broiler for 1-2 minutes.* Slide frittata onto a large plate and cut into 8 wedges.

Meanwhile, toast bread. Place 4 pieces of toast onto a cutting board. Spread each one with approximately 1 tbsp (15 mL) tomato pesto.

Arrange 2 frittata wedges over each piece of toast.

Top with arugula. Place 4 remaining pieces of toast over sandwich bottoms and serve immediately.

Makes 4 servings. *If frying pan handle is not oven proof, cover completely with double thickness of aluminum foil.

Peanut Butter Oatmeal Cookies 2 cups (500 mL) all-purpose flour 1 tsp (5 mL) baking soda ½ tsp (2 mL) salt 1 tsp (5 mL) cinnamon 2/3 cup (150 mL) butter 2/3 cup (150 mL) peanut butter 1 cup (250 mL) sugar 1 cup (250 mL) brown sugar 2 eggs 1 tsp (5 mL) vanilla 1½ cups (375 mL) oatmeal 1½ cups (375 mL) raisins In a medium bowl, combine flour, baking soda, salt and cinnamon. Set aside. In large bowl, beat together butter, peanut butter, sugar and brown sugar on medium speed. Add eggs one at a time; beating well after each addition. Beat in vanilla.

Gradually add flour mixture; blend well. Stir in oatmeal and raisins. Drop by tablespoonful (15

mL) onto parchment-lined baking sheets. Bake at 350°F (180°C) for 12-15 minutes or until golden brown. Cool on wire racks.

STEREO Reviewed by Randal McIlroy MG MG (Mute) Solo records are tough to vindicate when you’re a band’s sole songwriter. Bryan Ferry got around that in his early break from Roxy Music with idiosyncratic cover versions.

So did Depeche Mode’s director, Martin Gore, whose uncommon choices for his two Counterfeit EPs were vindicated by his obvious love for the material. Now, trading simply as MG, he’s generated an instrumental set that reaches back to the electronic textures that first drove Depeche Mode, and may have been made on the same equipment, but values melody and texture well ahead of sonic novelty. Moby’s millionselling Play may be the best reference point – Gore loves to set pretty, glassine melodies against ominous bass swirls and scything, the result being calming and sinister in the same metallic breath. In his lighter moments, this could be the opening music for Breakfast Television. With his day job paying diminishing rewards artistically, MG confirms a bright mind remains at the controls.

(Virgin/Universal) Just how the most savage, bloody-minded band to loom from Britain’s progressive rock scene lasted as well as it has may be down to iron will and persistence of vision, as Van der Graaf Generator leader Peter Hammill muses in the liner notes to these exciting two discs. Having great tunes, whether immediate or insidious, didn’t hurt, and neither did the unusual and astounding lineup. The well-read Hammill’s Existential essays and red-raw rock were matched for ferocity by David Jackson’s electric saxes, Hugh Banton’s trouble-in-the-cathedral organ and Guy Evans’ tireless drumming, and the BBC version of the stage favourite, “Killer” – shark as metaphor for the self-destructive – captures the band’s inimitable extremes. They always had more colours at hand, however, and “Refugees” shows how they could play prettily too. Vividly recorded, and appointed well in liner notes and photographs, After the Flood is a faultless introduction.

MAL WALDRON Quintets (Black Saint/Soul Note import) No notes were wasted beneath Mal Waldron’s hands. His music made the most of the least, with a tireless left hand as iron anchor while his right scurried. Solo sets and small groups pay best tribute to the late pianist, but the four albums boxed for Quintets excite in other ways. The tracks are long, with plenty of room for the burly horns and terrific combustion from the Reggie Workman/Ed Blackwell rhythm team. The greatest surprise is “The Seagulls of Kristiansund,” which unrolls slowly across 26 wellmeasured minutes. The Waldron set is part of the same Italian series as a great Steve Lacy anthology reviewed recently in these pages – four albums pressed in miniature replica album sleeves for a deep-dish box. There’s no overview booklet, and you’ll want a magnifying glass for the original liner notes, but with a retail price in Canada of about $30 you can afford the latter.

“I’ve always had empathy towards people who suffer in silence,” Vandal says. “It has always hurt me inside. I have worked with hundreds of drug addicts and alcoholics who struggle so much with what is now commonly called a ‘co-occurring disorder.’

“After the chemical withdrawal, I went to Addictions Foundations of Manitoba, then I went to Tamarack rehab. I met a care worker who said to me, ‘We are only as sick as our secrets.’ That has always stuck with me. It was true for me; I was so bottled up with PTSD and the negative memories it made me feel. I was so emotionally ill, waking up in the middle of the night crying for no reason but memories from years ago.’

“Now, 13 years sober, I take the time and make the time to be there for others like people were there for me,” he adds, “Like my uncle Dan Vandal, who was a huge emotional support for me my whole life. He was always there for me, even at my lowest points.”

Though happy to tell his story, Vandal found that working on the book, his first, was its own challenge. He’s grateful to Rummery, a Winnipeg writer and editor.

“Thanks to her and her patience, she not only crafted a great book, but also helped me with the healing process,” he says.

“This book was the hardest thing I’ve ever done.

I’ve been through a lot, so to say this was the hardest really means a lot. I relived my trauma in detail, but also faced it head on. I was ready for this, as I had been through programs that help you deal with your past, so I was well prepared,” he adds.

“Really though, I just remain true to myself; I’m always available to help others even if they have done me wrong. After all the mistakes I’ve made in my life, how could I possibly be critical of others? We’re all allowed to make mistakes. It’s just the people who keep making the same ones over and over that you need to be careful of. Making the same mistakes, you have to see that they are making a conscious choice.”

One thing that helped him to recover was boxing, an activity he now shares with others. He is, in fact, a 3rd level NCCP boxing coach, and works with young people through boxing. “Off the Ropes” features a photo of Vandal with Team Manitoba, who he coached for the 2011 Canada Winter Games.

“I love giving people and kids hope. Being involved in a sport is a way to attain a level of

Roland Vandal has lived through the toughest of times: sexual abuse as a teenager, addictions, brushes with the law, suicide attempts. But he’s survived, and now boasts a book about his ordeal and his recovery, Off the Ropes (Shillingford), written with Carlene Rummery. These days, he looks for ways to help people.

self worth, learn commitment, and accountability.

It helps me be accountable to others,” he says.

“I experienced abuse at the hands of a coach and I like to embrace the fact there are good volunteers and coaches who really make a difference, as my hockey coaches did with me.

People can get past their traumatic events and capitalize on their hurt. You can lever off of the negative and turn it into positive,” explains Vandal.

“One of the boys I coached was having a lot of trouble and wasn’t showing up at the gym. So I went to his school and tracked him down. He was having trouble in foster care at his current home. That day, I helped him get removed and I signed on as his foster parent, thus opening the door to the youth home I have now.”

Now a successful motivational speaker (breakingthechain.ca), Vandal has spoken more than 700 times across Canada and the US. He is also the subject of three documentaries:

“FIGHT”(available on Netflix), “Filling The Void” (on YouTube) and “The Wounded Healer: The Roland Vandal Story.” The last was directed by Jim Agapito and is airing this fall on CBC. He’s also in talks for a feature movie deal.

Vandal has also received much recognition for his community work: featured in the book, The Leadership Of Winnipeg; named one of the top 40 community leaders (Winnipeg Chamber of Commerce); one of the 100 most fascinating people in Manitoba (Metro newspaper); and one of the top 100 community leaders in North America (the John C Maxwell Team in Orlando, Florida). He was just awarded the TJ’s Gift Foundation “Champion Award” this past spring.

“Helping others means two people get gifts: the people we are helping and then ourselves for getting busy with life, getting out of ourselves,” enthuses Vandal. “Today I love my life.”

Two Sided Story The big story on hair trends today is colour, colour, colour! Dental clinic designed with family dentistry in mind

For many people, a visit to the dentist can create some anxiety, especially if accompanying a child. The dental team at the new Corydon Dental Centre want to change that: they want patients to look forward to their next appointment. After a visit to the new clinic at 1425 Corydon Avenue, you can see how the environment could elicit that response.

From the huge, bright reception area to the mid-century modern marshmallow sofa to the children’s playroom, the Corydon Dental Centre is designed for family dentistry.

It’s no coincidence then, that Douglas Paul Design, a design company that specializes in creating and renovating dental offices, was involved in the project. Working with Dr. Angela Thomas - one of the dentists at the Centre who just happens to have a keen eye for design - Doug Lennox designed a dental office to embrace a unique style.

“We are creative consultants,” says Lennox, who owns Douglas Paul Design. “We design the floor plans and interior theme, which is very detailed, using 3D color images so clients can see what they’re getting. Then we work with contractors to do the job. We organize and supervise the construction to ensure it’s going according to the plan. We manage the project, from start to finish.”

Lennox, who says his projects are usually more contemporary involving glass and stainless steel, calls the design “vintage with a modern twist.”

“This project was a little different because Angela had a specific set of requirements in mind. She was very hands-on. She also helped with material selection.”

Thomas acknowledges that she played a big role in developing the look, adding that request for

design went out to other companies but from the first rendering, Lennox was interpreting what she imagined.

“Doug was good at taking what I had in my head and putting it on paper. He asked questions and listened to what I wanted. He has a special way of making what you want happen,” says Thomas.

She says her inspiration came from her love of the design of River Heights’ homes. “I wanted our clinic to have similar elements such as mouldings, windows, baseboards – but with a modern touch. We didn’t want it to look like a dental office. We wanted a clean, fresh look.”

“I think we achieved that,” she continues. “The receptionist area feels more like living space. It’s beautiful and bright, and we’re on the second floor at tree level, so there’s a nice view. There’s a playroom for children, and we even have iPads

“We also want to grow our pediatric practice,” says Thomas, who did her residency in pediatrics, has a background in treating children and a special knack for putting them at ease.

“There’s a trend toward sending children to pediatric dentists, but we want to be able to treat children here in our clinic,” she says, stating the addition of Dr. Jordan Pang, who also loves working with children and teens, will help them move in that direction. “We want the entire family to come to our clinic. Our goal is to offer all of our patients a full range of dental service in one place.”

“The building was still under construction so we were basically coming into an empty shell,” he notes. “Within six months, we were able to take a concept the client envisioned and create a distinctive design. The job went smoothly, was on time and within budget.”

ust one year ago, these East St. Paul homeowners had an altogether different view from their backyard deck, where they overlooked an off-grade, poorly drained yard with dead trees.

There were few places for their kids to play, or for adults to entertain.

In the fall of 2014, the Silver Stone team removed the dead trees and brought the yard to grade by hauling in 1,000 yards of fill.

But they knew that their huge yard had potential.

The pool was installed at the same time. Over the winter, Thibeault worked with the homeowners to refine the yard’s design. By this spring, the stage was set for Silver Stone to complete the landscaping process.

That’s why they enlisted Kyle Thibeault, owner of Silver Stone Landscaping to help realize their vision.

The homeowners desired a deck and patio area, a swimming pool and outdoor game court, along with trees, shrubs and grassed areas incorporated in to the yard’s design. Thibeault’s challenge was to integrate these very disparate elements into a unified and connected whole.

“The whole idea for this yard was that it would have flow between the different zones,” says Thibeault.

“We added gentle hills and berms to shape the yard while providing visual interest and privacy,” says Thibeault.

“A project of this size and scope meant many months of planning before we set the wheels in motion,” says Thibeault.

The Silver Stone crew planted a variety of mature trees – ash, spruce, flowering crabapple, Amur cherry among them – around the yard’s perimeter. The trees act as natural privacy screens, while providing beautiful foliage at different times of the year.

They incorporated more trees and large rocks, along with perennial shrubs like mugo pine, into curved beds of crushed black granite that sweep around and between the pool and games court areas.

The games court, where the family can enjoy activities like basketball and volleyball, is set at a slightly lower grade than the pool area and accessed via a low flight of stairs.

Retaining walls of Barkman Pisa II stones help provide further distinction between the various activity areas. Thibeault’s design included several large granite boulders cut into the retaining walls to add height, texture and further visual appeal.

“We used a lot of curvature in the garden beds and walls to soften the pool’s concrete deck as well as the linear lines of the pool and games court areas,” says Thibeault.

He notes that they included inlays of Barkman Roman paving stones in the pool deck to break up the expanse of concrete and further unify the hardscaping.

Linking all the zones together are stepping stone walkways of Barkman Dynasty slate slabs in “Sierra Gray.” These paths also allow access to storage sheds and provide overall direction within the yard.

Silver Stone installed an underground irrigation system to help keep the newly transformed property as low maintenance as possible.

Now, when the homeowners look out from their deck, they have an amazing vista: healthy stands of trees, lush grass, rounded garden beds and undulating walls and paths to complement their main recreation areas.

Extensive advance planning, ongoing adjustments and creativity combined in a successful realization of this yard’s ambitious overhaul. It was worth it: the homeowners were able to entertain and enjoy quality family time by the summer.

It’s hot. It’s sweaty. It’s time to think about a pool. Jonathan Kreviazuk and business partner Blair Irwin have been offering the solutions to hot weather survival since 2008. The pair own and operate Samson Pools, a premier supplier of wet recreation that has been helping Manitobans make the very best of summer with more than 200 combinations of above ground and in-ground pools. At Samson, they build pools, repair pools and provide the kind of service that makes pool ownership child’s play.

According to Jonathan, people can put themselves into a nicely landscaped in-ground pool starting around $45,000, with above ground pools running upwards of $10,000.

“The cost of a fabulous backyard pool is a lot less than people might think. And, because we know the ins and outs of Manitoba’s unique installation needs and have years of experience, we take all the bumps out of the road,” says Jonathan.

“In the last few years, we have seen a growth in shallow no-diving pools with people going for a resort experience over lap swimming,” he says.

Jonathan has also seen a move to stamped concrete and vinyl steps. “This gives a more modern appearance,” he says, noting that diving boards seem to be a thing of the past with only about 25 percent of installs going this route. “Slides are sturdier and safer today, and these are quite popular.”

He reports that customers of Samson Pools quickly discover that both owners are frequently on site to manage the job.

“You call us because you want less stress in your life. You want the luxury of a pool. We understand and know that customers expect what was said during the sale must be done at installation. Either Blair or myself personally manage the job till it’s finished and perfect.”

Certainly, pool perfection is what Winnipeggers are discovering when they come home to find backyards newly landscaped for fun. According to Jonathan, they typically install standard shapes like ovals or rectangles, but have done complete custom jobs that add an owner’s personal touch to new homes and existing properties.

e asked Manitoba Home Builders’ Association President Mike Moore what’s new at this fall’s Parade of Homes. This is what he told us.

“There are 131 new homes from 33 different builders being shown this year in 36 separate neighbourhoods. This is a lot of new home excitement and shows that Manitoba homebuilders are full of innovation,” he says.

According to Moore, there are 40,000 visits to Parade of Home locations each fall. People have a number of reasons to visit. Some make the trip to developments around Winnipeg to discover and learn about new home trends and design and the latest in amenities, while others seek to find out how easy it is to find the family in a new home address.

“People will drop in to a showhome to check out cutting edge design and maybe take this to their existing home. They are looking at counters and walkouts, home theatres and flooring examples to discover what might work at their home,” says Moore, mentioning that these three weeks in September and October show off the industry like nothing else.

“You can’t just spend your time looking at computer screens for new homes and interior design. The Parade of Homes is a perfect opportunity to get real and kick some tires.

At showhomes you can see home automation systems at work or find out how solid the hardwoods in the great room are,” he says.

According to Moore, many of those people interested in new homes will tour the sites making lists of properties to which they want to return after all the fanfare has died down.

“People develop questions at the Parade and then contact the agent after to arrange a private showing and discuss custom touches,” he says, concluding that a new home purchase means you get to live life on your terms in a home design that is free of compromises.

A 243-acre master planned community, Bonavista will offer approximately 1,100 single-family homes as the neighbourhood is built out over the

“Having no cul du sacs means the community is more walkable. The lot layout is also better for passive heating and cooling of homes because of the positioning of lots in reference to sunlight.”

Genstar has partnered with 13 leading homebuilders to bring the best of Manitoba new home design and technology to the development. Brown notes that lots are ample with a wide variety available. These include lane lots, park and lake lots, and amenity lots with widths up to 50 feet.

“There is great connectivity to transit, roadways and bike paths, and the area is well serviced by commercial hubs at St Vital Centre and Sage Creek,” he says.

The community is also environmentally sensitive. Not only is Genstar working with Native Plant Solutions to create low impact wetlands, but Bonavista will also feature 100 percent LED street lighting, an attribute that means lower cost and less power usage.

“We are very excited about developing the Bonavista neighbourhood.

When Manitoba Housing came up with the idea for the Bridgwater Neighbourhoods, the goal was that each neighbourhood would have a distinct look, they would be connected by pathways and walkways, and they would all lead to the Town Centre where residents could gather and shop. Each year, the addition of more housing, amenities and new businesses brings the neighbourhoods closer to that objective.

“To date, 1070 homes have been sold. We expect it to be built out and fully occupied by 2017,” says Rewniak.

Built along three beautiful lakes, the homes of Bridgwater Lakes blend traditional style with distinctively modern architectural features, and are exclusively single-family dwellings. So far, 850 homes have been sold and 600 are occupied.

Showhomes at Bridgwater Trails Bridgwater Trails is the newest residential neighbourhood and will offer the largest number of single-family homes and multi-family units.

“When construction is complete, the development will offer approximately 1200 single-family homes and over 1000 multi-family units,” notes Rewniak.

“We will be having a grand opening of the Bridgwater Trails neighbourhood in September,

just in time for the Fall Parade of Homes,” he advises. “There will be 22 new showhomes that the public can visit, and they are located on Rose Lake Court and Willow Creek Road.”

“Showhomes are already open and more showhomes will open this fall, so people will be able to see what the residential component of the town centre looks like,” says Rewniak.

With the new showhomes in Bridgwater Trails, the Neighbourhoods of Bridgwater will offer a total of 31 showhomes. “That is more showhomes than in any new housing development in the city,” he points out.

The first commercial venture, Red River Co-op car wash and gas bar, opened this spring. Just announced in July, Save-On-Foods is the second, and will be the “anchor tenant” of the town centre.

As the name implies, Bridgwater Trails will include an extensive park and a trail system.

Save-on-Foods offers grocery and produce ranging from meats and vegetables to baked goods.

The Vancouver-based retailer sources its products locally wherever possible.

“The trail system is at the forefront in this neighbourhood,” Rewniak says. “They will tie into the more than 30 km of dedicated park trails that connect into the other neighbourhoods.”

A 50-acre park – one of the largest in any new community in Winnipeg – will feature a hilltop lookout, sports fields for baseball and soccer, as well as a children’s play area.

Like all the other neighbourhoods, Bridgwater Trails will have a central park with a fountain in the centre.

“This fountain will be impressive. The residents in this neighbourhood will be pleased,” he says, adding that the new fountain is expected to be open in time for the fall Parade of Homes.

Save-On-Foods at town centre Bridgwater Centre, located in the heart of the three residential neighbourhoods, features a mix of residential, commercial, and retail. Hilton Homes and A & S Homes are continuing construction of the single attached town home family units.

What is unique about this retailer is it customizes its store to fit the needs of the community, Rewniak notes, adding that commitment will extend to the design of the store.

“We want the look and feel of the store to be consistent with and complement the rest of the neighbourhood. Just as residential units go through architectural review, we will work to ensure the design of the store is consistent with the overall design of the neighbourhoods,” he explains.

“Since the grocery store will be central to all the Bridgwater neighbourhoods, residents will be able to walk or bike there,” he says. “The whole idea of the town centre is to make it easier for people to walk or cycle than to take their car,” he adds.

“We are very excited that Save-on-Foods has chosen Bridgwater as one of its Winnipeg locations”, Rewniak states. “We expect construction to begin this fall, and are possibly looking at an opening in late 2016.”

Bridgwater Forest was the first of the Bridgwater neighbourhoods so it is the most established.

“There are less than 150 lots remaining in the first phase,” says Michael Carruthers, Ladco’s Manager of Land Development.

However, he reports there is still a good selection that includes amenity lots with walkout basements.

“Sales expectations have been continually exceeded thanks to the demand, the location and the ability of our 13 homebuilders to create a wide variety of wonderful home plans,” adds David Borger, Vice President of Land Development with Ladco, the company behind this multi-phase community. He mentions sales of around 200 lots per year, a number that made South Pointe one of Winnipeg’s leaders in new home building permits year after year.

According to Carruthers, people have been attracted by the parks and walking paths, aspects that help make South Pointe a highly liveable destination for lifestyle.

The community is home to an extensive trail and sidewalk system that takes residents through a range of terrain from streetscape to pond shore. “It has been the full slate of attributes that have attracted residents who are from a wide range of ages, ethnic mixes and occupations.

This has created a fully blended community,” says Borger, pointing out that their plans are to continue this winning formula as they open Phase II, a 640-acre, 2000-home site just to the west of Kenaston Blvd. Servicing is underway and lots will be available fall of 2015.

Important as well was the inclusion of Tower Engineering Group to the team. Tower Engineering offers services in structural, precast, mechanical, electrical, environmental and IT. In fact, they have made a name for themselves as a go-to firm for feasibility studies and cost benefit analysis, as well as engineering design, drawing preparation, project supervision, and cost estimating, not to mention operations and maintenance planning.

“At Tower our focus is on the client. The natural beauty is further complemented by the interior finishes and quality of the materials. For example, kitchen and bathroom cabinets are made by Springfield Woodworking, a company that prides itself on old world craftsmanship. According to Paul Kleinsasser, General Manager of Springfield Woodworking, they built the cabinets with the help of 63 craftspeople at the Springfield Colony at a site near Anola. He reports cabinets at 2033 on the Creek use 5/8th thick backing and drawer bottoms.

“This gives maximum quality,” he says. “All our construction is made using dowels and CNC

machining for a precise fit. We also use a waterbased UV coating that is non-yellowing. All our finishes are applied using a state of the art automatic system,” he adds, noting that the soft close cabinets at 2033 are available in three custom finishes to complement décor.

Another important contributor to the design is Western Granite & Tile. This company supplies the quartz counters that are so distinctive in both kitchen and bath. According to Michelle Clarke, the counters are part of a five choice

finishing package that includes three quartz colours to work with the cabinetry choices.

“We are installing 2cm thick quartz counters to deliver a sleek modern look to the suites,” says Western Granite & Tile CEO, Jeremy Mathison. He comments that EdgeCorp has been coming to them for granite and quartz solutions that require the highest standards and best price points.

What started out as a corner glass repair and hardware shop in 1968 has grown to be one of Manitoba’s leading-edge custom glass companies for both residential and commercial applications. While Fort Rouge Glass Ltd. (FRG) certainly works with the province’s premier homebuilders and commercial developers, they still maintain that “corner shop” feeling, taking walk-ins and doing those home renovation projects that leave customers saying “wow.”

“Walk-ins and residential clients are a priority for us. It’s how we built the business,” says Brendan Berntt, president of Fort Rouge Glass. “About 40 percent of our customers are premier homebuilders, but the other 60 percent is made up of people looking for smaller projects within their homes.”

Because the company’s work can be seen in so many showhomes, many people may feel that a glass application would be out of reach for their home, but Berntt states there are affordable solutions for every customer.

One prime example is rather than creating an entire glass staircase, a customer can retrofit with glass railings. In the past glass railing was commonly used for commercial applications, but today it has become popular for residential interiors. Open concept design has become very popular for contemporary living spaces. Glass partitions are a great way to open up the view while still maintaining a level of separation and muted acoustics.

The blend of old and new, natural and manufactured, rustic and modern have made for exciting times in home design. And this fall it’s various metal finishes blended together for unique lighting fixtures.

“Metal mixology is a term we use to describe the mixing of various finishes within one piece,” explains Alison Demare, BID, branch manager, Robinson Lighting Ltd. She adds that this blending is currently popular in furniture, jewellery and accessories, as well as lighting.

“You will see many pieces incorporate the classic finishes of the past but now they are integrated all into one unique piece,” says Demare.

The use of natural materials such as wood, bronze and antique brass, and natural fibres, such as jute, linens, and silks, is also on point with this trend. Within the lighting world oilrubbed bronze metals mixed with antique or brushed brass as an accent, or fabric shades with gilded gold frames are prevalent. Robinson lighting carries many beautiful examples of such styles.

Many of these pieces also have an old-world style to them due to the antique finishes present.

These styles tend to complement a ‘“casual luxury” décor. And, keeping one metal constant from one room to another, such as the dark warmth of the oil rubbed bronze, allows the fixture to move from one space to another without requiring a matching set.

When one Winnipeg family wanted to go big with their entertainment room, they knew who to call.

“We were able to take the basic design and create something special from the ground up,” says Sean Banks, owner of K&S. He mentions that it’s the small details such as auto-dimming the room’s lights once the projector is turned on which are important to the overall approach.

Smart home automation system Control4’s sophisticated technology was a key feature in the success of this project’s design and its ability to wow the homeowners. K&S is the distributor and installer of Control4 systems in Winnipeg.

“Control of the home is as simple as using your smart phone or computer tablet,” says Banks, explaining how they were able to use the smart home technology to fully automate the home. He mentions the home features 24 zones for sound, as well as three additional surround sound systems – plus the incredible entertainment room.

“Control4 handles it all,” he says.

Creating a chic, yet functional space can be as simple as incorporating a few products that offer a little extra assistance. One of the showroom’s newest pieces is the Kohler Elevance Rising Wall Tub. The extra wide opening and chair-height seat provide a safe and comfortable way to enter and leave the bath. You can raise the wall with one hand and it locks in place, while the waterfall fills the bath.

Modern Movement

Modern kitchens are not only a space to prepare food, but are also a gathering spot for residents and guests. This open concept kitchen, designed

by Patrick Chan of Kitchen Craft Cabinetry for Artista Homes, combines a simplistic modern design that is functional for someone who enjoys being in the kitchen, as well as a great space for entertaining.

The focal point in the kitchen is the threefoot-deep, 8.5-foot-long island, which features a built-in dishwasher and microwave on one side for food prep and cleanup, along with ample sitting and gathering space on the other side for guests.

Along with a professional grade sink, the island’s design is completed with white, quartz gables for a polished finish.

The sleek look continues with the kitchen’s cabinetry - engineered wooden doors in a modern flat style called Summit have been painted in the colour Cirrus, which supports the colour selections made by Artista. The upper cabinets feature lift-up doors, and recessed puck lights for a more modern design.

Chan states contemporary cabinet designs such as this, along with high-gloss thermo-foil doors, will continue to trend into fall, but he adds customers will soon be seeing more of Kitchen Craft’s painted opaque finishes in luxury homes.

KITCHEN&BATH The Times Are A Changin’

“Lighting changes so fast, especially when it comes to LED technology,” explains Super-Lite president and co-owner Simon Simkin, adding there’s usually new technology every three months, and new fixtures every six months.

“LED is becoming a major force. Fifty percent or more of new products are dedicated LED fixtures.”

He notes that even ceiling fans, usually the last category to embrace change, have adopted the popular lighting technology. Unlike traditional bulbs, LED light emits less heat and uses less power.

A new selection of fans are are now in stock at Super-Lite’s 10,000-square-foot showroom on Waverley Street. The store’s space continues to undergo minor “makeovers,” creating ways to feature new products and keep displays interesting.

Simkin points to Artcraft Lighting’s Bel Air pendant, featured here with copper ribbons and a chrome interior. Available in a variety of sizes and colours, the fixture has numerous home applications and casts a unique light effect, thanks to its curls.

Along with the influx of new products is updated training. Simkin says since lighting changes so quickly, there’s always a learning curve for store staff who are constantly learning about technology, materials, and design to ensure customers are given the latest information.

Take Design for Granite

With two-tone kitchens being on point for fall design, clients are also starting to get creative with their hard surface selection.

“There are more projects with two or more [counter] selections - some with a combination of quartz and granite, and some with different colours of granite or different colours in quartz,” says Grace Mathison, Vice President of Western Marble Granite & Tile (WMGT), pointing to the idea of quartz on the perimeter counters and granite on the island.

Both materials present a difference appearance, which may influence a customer’s installation choice. Quartz has a consistent appearance, while every slab of granite is different and unique.

However, with WMGT’s cutting-edge technology, the company can cut a granite slab that allows for the continuous natural pattern of the grains in the stone.

WMGT’s new showroom features a computer station with a big-screen T.V. for customers to look through their inventory. They also have an extensive selection of tiles and edge details in large format pieces on display, as well as a variety of in-stock small slab material for projects like vanity tops and coffee tables.

Along with being nominated for a 2015 Spirit of Winnipeg Award for innovation, WMGT recently became a Marble Institute of America Accredited Natural Stone Fabricator making them only the third location in Canada to achieve this certification.
