the agenda Summer in Manitoba is never long enough – that’s a given. Nor is our publishing cycle each year as we work on the fall issue of Style Manitoba – also a foregone conclusion. Much like the builders scrambling to finish the last details in their showhomes on time for the Parade of Homes, our people are busy getting those last shots taken, scribing last minute editorials and putting the finishing touches on the layout to get to the printer on time. Throughout the process, Style’s schedule is intrinsically tied to that of many MHBA members - and so it should be. After all, it’s always their showhomes, products and services that are heavily featured in our autumn editions. This season marks Style Manitoba’s 18th year of bringing readers a taste of what’s available locally in home designs and décor, housing developments, outdoor living, entertainment, and the lifestyle concerns of Manitobans. In this issue, we are proud to feature the Fall 2014 Parade of Homes, with coverage on some of the finest builders, developers and industry suppliers in the province. How time flies! It does not seem so long ago that we published the inaugural issue of Style Manitoba, but really, it is. Since September of 1996 when our first edition came out, whole neighbourhoods have grown up and filled in, followed by sod turning ceremonies for the new communities that sprang up quickly behind them. During the time our publication has existed, both home designs and neighbourhood planning have evolved considerably, resulting in innovative, well thought out spaces that would delight even those with the most discerning tastes. Indeed, today’s homebuyers are in for a treat. This fall’s Parade should not be missed. Throughout the 18 years of publishing Style Manitoba, I have always had the support and encouragement of my father, Bernard, who read every issue

from cover to cover. He was a constant source of inspiration to me, offering his sage advice on everything from sales to editorial ideas (some of which featured him) to distribution, and sometimes even boosting staff morale. (He once penned a note to our Art Director, Paul Butters, commending him for his excellent layouts and design sense.) In fact, I can truthfully say Bernard was our biggest fan.

issue of Style Manitoba (he was really hoping I would). Regrettably, I did not. As fate would have it, the day after Father’s Day he was gone. Needless to say, my family and I will miss him terribly. In honour of his memory, I dedicate this issue to Bernard – my irreplaceable father – a loving and dedicated family man who truly made this world a better place to be.

In May, my father asked if I was going to write anything about him in the summer AUTUMN 2014 | STYLE MANITOBA | 5

When a home is as much a pleasure to look at as it is to live in, you know that it’s been built with consideration to every detail. Such is the case in this custom-built home by K. Streu Homes, located in the Tielmann Drive subdivision off Henderson Highway just past the north Perimeter. Being this close to the Red River, the homeowners wanted to take advantage of the park-like surroundings without detracting from them.

Amazing from all angles Creative details abound in new home with retro vibe B y C a r ly P e t e r s

Photography: Michael Roberts

Builders Kurt and Heather Streu achieved this vision by using the lot to its fullest advantage. The home is nestled into a landscaped, lowmaintenance yard. Gentle grass hills are punctuated by areas of crushed black granite featuring large boulders and softened by a variety of perennial plantings. The whole yard is surrounded by mature trees that were intentionally spared when the lot was cleared. The Streus further integrated the home and landscape by building up the front yard, thereby eliminating the need for extra steps at the front entrance. Doing so fulfilled the homeowners’ other wish: a streamlined, functional design, inside and out. The Streus achieved a balance of retro and new by giving a 1970s ranch style design a contemporary makeover. The home’s clean façade of manmade stone and acrylic stucco is paired with visually interesting angled rooflines. These angles are cleverly played up in

the home’s interior (more on that later). Even the four-car garage’s metal and glass doors by Creative Door are architecturally integrated for a seamless exterior.

5Kurt and Heather designed and built this home to take advantage of the lot’s beautiful natural features. 6 | STYLE MANITOBA | AUTUMN 2014

Because the home was built for the views, looking from the inside out is nearly as nice as looking in. Large, triple pane windows from Accurate Dorwin are maximized around the

home to take full advantage of the natural light. A walkout deck off of the main floor living area is a private retreat to relax and enjoy the lake-like atmosphere. The matte metal deck railing with glass inserts from Windeck provides an unimpeded view of the tree foliage and occasional glimpses of birds and squirrels.

The deck can be accessed either via 12’ x 8’ sliding glass doors off the family room or the sliding panels next to the kitchen. The kitchen is a central hub for these homeowners and their active family, so no details are spared here. Some of these details are artfully hidden to stay true to the streamlined aesthetic. Motorized, laminated upper cabinet doors for example, flip

up with the touch of a finger -- eliminating the need for visually distracting door pulls. The eating island features under-cabinet lighting and a wine rack. In addition to the glass range top, all of the GE Monogram appliances are built-in. Their sleek, stainless steel profiles complement the surrounding solid walnut cabinetry installed by Woodwise Custom

Glittering white quartz countertops reflect the daylight and at night, the glow from the unique LED light fixture from Robinson Lighting that’s suspended above the island. Heather took great care and pride in selecting the interior design and dÊcor elements of this home, including the lighting, colour scheme, flooring, cabinets and finishing materials. For example, Heather chose a Grohe spring-mounted faucet with both regular and veggie spray options, for its form and function.

5A built-in wine rack in the eating island comes in handy when serving in the adjacent dining area. The kitchen, as well as all the bathrooms in the home, are warm underfoot thanks to heated ceramic tile flooring. At the midway point of the open concept main floor is a transition area consisting of an informal dining space. Here, a low profile wall features a soft grey wavy tile inset that acts both as funky artwork and subtle room divider. The Streus incorporated a serving bar with AUTUMN 2014 | STYLE MANITOBA | 9

main entrance or the garage. Stair lighting guides one down to a spacious area with large windows. The landscaping can be enjoyed from this level as well, despite being northfacing and partially below grade. A workout room and entertainment area complete with projection screen TV is the perfect place for the homeowners’ three teenagers to hang out. Each teen has a bedroom equipped with a walk-in closet. There’s certainly no shortage of impressive details in the lower level. The two bathrooms shared by the teens have ample storage and recessed niches in the shower stalls to house all their toiletries. The owners designed a custom headboard for one of the bedrooms to accommodate an angled wall. Kurt, known for his creative, innovative approaches to homebuilding, transformed a wall that was camouflaging a telepost, into a visually interesting element simply by angling it rather than squaring it off. Painted the same colour as the bulkhead, the wall now has flair as well as function.

smaller square windows along the short hallway leading to a large walk-in closet. Fitted with drawers and shelving, the his/ hers closet eliminates the need for dressers in the bedroom itself. This feature makes for an overall cleaner look, and since the closet can be closed off behind sliding doors, the space appears even more streamlined. Dormand Industries supplied all the interior doors for the project, including the 8’ high doors on the main floor. “Proportionately, they look better with the angled ceilings in the master and elsewhere in the home,” Kurt notes. A stunning ensuite shares the same linear, clean, yet warm, characteristics as the rest of the home. Most notable is the glassed-in shower stall by Shodor, with a surround clad in wood-like tile to mimic the ensuite’s walnut cabinetry. A luxurious rain showerhead and body sprays sourced from Robinson Bath Centre lend a spa-like feel to the shower. There is no curb to step over since the shower floor is sloped to a central linear drain. Two corner windows and the use of large mirrors take full advantage of the natural light here, too. The light-filled quality of the upstairs extends to the lower level, accessed either from the The lower level shares the same light-filled quality as the main floor. Note the angled wall next to the wet bar that cleverly disguises a telepost while adding visual interest. 4

Fully wired for sound, the home’s electronics equipment is housed in a storage cubbyhole located below the main entrance. It used to be that homeowners had their equipment displayed in full view, but now the preference is to hide it all away to reduce clutter. An infrared controller can simply be pointed in any direction to change TV channels, control stereo volume and more. “There’s no limit to the amount of home automation you can have,” says Streu. This family home exhibits all the hallmarks of a K. Streu Homes build: high quality material and craftsmanship, thoughtful design, and functional spaces made for living. It is a home truly meant to be viewed– and enjoyed – from all of its beautiful angles.

The ART of Home Automation The future has arrived for homeowners. With it have come greater convenience, security and the ability to control interior environments with an ease our grandparents would have viewed as science fiction. I’m talking about home automation, where Winnipeg-based Advance Electronics through their ART Division has become a market leader by offering new product innovation alongside iconic customer service developed over 50 years as the top local name in electronics. “People are now planning for automation at the design stage, rather than as an afterthought once a new home is built,” says Trevor Siepman, Department Manager of Advanced Residential Technology (ART). He reports that people can now run virtually everything from audio/

visual systems, to HVAC, to security systems and home lighting from their Smartphone with Wi-Fi. “Its as simple as one App connectivity. In the past we wired everything and had to hide all the connections. Now devices such as routers, audio video components and controllers can all be located in one spot away from view and controlled via devices such as a laptop, tablet, or Smartphone from anywhere in the world.” To help customers get the big picture on home automation Advance created a unique specialized showroom that features a full home environment from bathroom to kitchen to bedrooms and family area. “We can take customers through and show them exactly how the systems work and how they

talk to one another,” says ART Sales Consultant Bruno Deleau. “We also constructed a boardroom style meeting facility so that designers and architects can come in and discuss projects with us,” he adds, commenting that ART also works in the home renovation market as well as new homes. “We have automation products that are very reno friendly and work wirelessly, so again, there are no wires and cables to hide behind walls or baseboards. Systems are easy to use, convenient and intuitive.” Want to find out just how easy home automation can be? Visit www.advance.mb.ca.

At Mercedes Benz innovation is the minimum. Seldom has a car manufacturer so consistently raised the bar with new products and exciting industry leading technology. This model year is no different with the release of the completely redesigned ‘C’ Class and the introduction of the remarkable GLA – the company’s first compact premium sport utility vehicle. “These cars are preselling very, very well,” says Mercedes Benz Winnipeg General Sales Manager, Mark Kelly. “The redesign of the ‘C’ Class really launches the range into newer more spectacular territory. These cars are now like smaller versions of the stunning ‘S’ Class, our renowned premier luxury car.” He suggests the redesign has created a group that is more sophisticated and powerful with roomier cabins and greater fuel efficiency. New is an on-console touchpad interface that allows control of media, communications and other functions with a simple swipe of a finger. The 2015 ‘C’ Class also features completely reengineered four-cylinder and six-cylinder turbo engines that really deliver, thanks to a massive body weight reduction through the introduction of 20 percent more aluminum. There’s more. Important safety features that were introduced in the ‘S’ Class and offered as options in other ranges are now standard in the ‘C’ Class redesign. For example, Cross Wind Assist™, Radar Assist Breaking™ and Agility Select™ are now standard, as is Pre-Safe™, a system that prepares the car and passengers for an impact. “Mercedes Benz really wrote the book when it comes to safety features that anticipate collisions, keep passengers safer in the event of an accident and create cabin environments that are more conducive to alert driving,” says Kelly, remarking that the combination of new standard features and available options take the ‘C’ Class cars to an even higher level of luxury, safety and performance. The new GLA represents a fresh departure for Mercedes Benz. Trading on the SUV popularity of the GLK, and the performance and luxury of the CLA, the new model is the lightest four-wheel drive on the market today. And just because it is light, nimble and fuel efficient, doesn’t mean it’s not packed with lots of

Innovation Sophistication B y K ell y G ra y

Mercedes goodness. The new GLA comes with an enhanced off-road package making a trip to the cottage over bad roads a non-concern. Mark reports that Mercedes has put a great deal of thought into the safety in this vehicle and has included a lot of their amazing technology inside the frame. Advanced systems such as Collision Prevention Assist™ and Attention Assist™ are standard, as is the sumptuous leather upholstery and easy driving electromechanical power steering. “With Collision Prevention Assist™ the system continually monitors the driving situation at speeds of 7km/h to 250 km/h. If the system identifies the threat of a rear-end collision, visual and acoustic warnings alert the driver. As soon as the brake is depressed, the Adaptive Brake Assist™ system integrated into Collision Prevention Assist™ can boost the brake pressure to prevent the accident,” says Kelly, remarking further that the system ensures that the available braking distance is used to maximum effect.

“The enhanced On/Off-road package mode in the GLA offers even better off-road performance at the push of a button. Specific modifications to transmission shift points, accelerator pedal curve and ABS result in optimized traction, particularly on loose surfaces. Downhill Speed Regulation™ (DSR) helps the driver to handle steep downhill driving in a safe and controlled manner. The desired speed can be set between 2km/h and 18 km/h and is kept constant within the bounds of what is physically possible. This is achieved by means of engine and transmission control and braking intervention,” he says. Kelly suggests that innovation is behind their gains in market-share where Mercedes Benz is the leader among its German competitors. “We’ve also made it easier than ever to find yourself behind the wheel of a Mercedes Benz. Think you can’t afford a car filled with this quality and performance? With prices starting in the upper $30,000s, think again!”

ater in the basement, a fire in the condo next door, a robbery, a baseball through your front window or a major hailstorm – owning a home is not always sweet. Whether you own a home or condo, rent an apartment, or have a cottage, home insurance is a musthave. Here are some must-knows from CAA Manitoba Insurance to help protect your sweet abode. • Ch-ch-ch-changes! Renovated your basement, added a room or upgraded your kitchen? Roads Less Travelled Trevor Nott is taking the car business onto a fresh track. An award-winning leading force in Winnipeg’s pre-owned and luxury auto sector, Nott is celebrating the grand opening of a second location this September that is nothing if not as innovative and groundbreaking as the cars they sell.

innovation, in both customer and staff experience,” says Nott Auto Corp. President Trevor Nott. He remarks that they had been looking at the Calgary market as a potentially good location to roll out this new concept.

The new site is located at the very busy corner of Waverly Street and McGillivray Blvd in Winnipeg’s rapidly expanding south end. It is unlike any car showroom most of us have ever visited. Indeed, one typically opens the door to a car dealership to find a few new models strategically placed in cookie cutter showrooms amid the aroma of new tire smell. At Nott Auto’s new location, buyers will not only find as many as 100 cars under roof, but an opportunity to discuss and buy fine art, as well as sample wines in a combination that is strikingly different from the auto mall culture so pervasive in most major cities.

“However,” he says, “My family’s home is Winnipeg and we have watched proudly as the city has undergone a renaissance in recent years. We see more clearly today than ever before that there is a huge opportunity to harness the city’s growth with the uniqueness of a first of a kind business that is a true experience rather than just simply a company delivering service in the auto sector. With our new location we can operate in a free-spirited real time creative way. The typical franchise store is limited by the manufacturer’s direction which guides how they market, display vehicles and process potential clients. We see that the auto sector is a market that is demanding change and we are delivering.”

“From the beginning, we have operated authentically and intuitively from a position of ‘why not.’ Nott - Luxury Auto and Art Gallery is definitely a continuing step in this direction of

Here’s what he has on offer. Under one roof Nott will feature as many as 100 cars. This means buyers don’t have to slog around on frozen parking lots in the winter where they watch

salespeople chip ice off the windshield to show the car. At Nott’s new location, buyers can walk around with a glass of wine and view a very wide range of cars surrounded by inspiring local art in heated/cooled luxury. Trevor reports the five-acre location offers 29,000 sq. ft of display and office space that includes an additional 9,000 sq ft of shop area. The popularity of Nott Auto really forced the move. Trevor reports that for the second year running, they have been dubbed Canada’s Top Choice Luxury Auto Dealer by a Toronto-based panel. Winnipeggers have not been surprised at the kudos, given the number of vehicles seen on the city’s streets with the distinctive NOTT logo on the rear of Escalades, Lexus’ and Audi’s. “We really reached our capacity at the location off Lagimodiere in North Kildonan. That site will continue to serve North Winnipeg,” he says, remarking that they will increase the number of service staff, given that they will be jockeying vehicles between locations. “It will also be rebranded and become a Wholesale Service Centre where we will be able to add to our services to include fully certified auto body

repair facility. We will also offer all of our local trade-ins to the public at wholesale pricing, as well as run an open auction for some of the province’s smaller dealers. Most of the trade-ins will be priced between $5000-$20,000 at a true wholesale price. We figured since we will have the extra space on Lagimodiere and lots of our clients have teenage children looking for their first car, what better time to start marketing towards the young first time buyer?”

Shiny white floor tile and overhead bulkheads are used in a runway effect to lead customers towards the car showroom and unique ‘Genuwine Cellars’ corner. This will contrast with the striking, dark epoxy floor on which the high-end vehicles will be displayed. “Throughout the space there will be angular flooring and feature wall details. The idea was to use these angular lines to suggest beams of light emulating movement,” says Leah.

The new Waverly at McGillivray location will offer more space and greater convenience, thanks to its position at a major intersection across from Lindenwoods close to the Waverley Automall. The new site will also be a distinctive addition to the area with very cool design attributes.

Transparency of space was an important design component. According to Arnott, they wanted to offer natural light for the clients and staff, as well as create an honest, open, friendly and comfortable environment, an aspect that reflects Nott’s business values.

“Currently, the property is home to a mid 1960’s era light industrial structure that leaves much to be desired. The corner is really one of Winnipeg’s most prominent intersections and our civic pride motivated us to look to design specialist Leah Arnott of Arnott and Associates for the help we need to turn this building into an innovative, attractive, luxury car centre where fine art and great wines don’t seem out of place.” Like many of Arnott’s projects the existing site had challenges and poor conditions. However, the Arnott design team –Leah Arnott, Mandy McLeod and Renée Martel – have been able to create an interior environment and exterior façade that is exciting, contemporary and unique.

“There is a lot of charcoal grey against the white. It was felt that a more neutral palette would work best for the space to showcase the product and large format art throughout the interior. We have also used back painted glass, as well as very interesting drywall features and sliding glass doors. We also utilized reclaimed wood elements and concrete accents,” she says, adding that her team also used modest splashes of a fresh orange color, highlighting Nott’s corporate colour, to add further contrast. Another perfect step is the addition of a custom wine feature. At Nott’s new site they will be building a glass-enclosed wine display that will allow Trevor to pair his concept with the fine wine lifestyle. To achieve this, Nott enlisted the help of Robb Denomme and Genuwine Cellars. The local company is a world leading custom wine cellar design and build firm with instal-

lations in more than 10 countries, where they have created climate-controlled wine storage rooms, which hold from 90 bottles to 45,000. “Trevor got us involved because Genuwine Cellars represents the epitome of fine living. Together we make a great team,” says Denomme. He reports that they are installing a custom design implementing their new Metal Series wine racking. “It is a contemporary project that works well within Nott Auto’s new gallery concept.” The materials and precision of Genuwine’s Metal Series work in harmony with the proposed modern appearance of Nott’s new showroom, where visitors will be able to peruse high-end automobiles, fine art, and other wine storage solutions offered by Genuwine. “Wine lovers will be able to view our portfolio of cellars and contact us directly with questions,” says Denomme. Wine cellar options are more varied than ever, with cellar designs ranging from traditional to modern, wood to metal, and custom to modular. Although Genuwine’s specialty rests in the ultra-high end of the wine cellar market, clients with more modest budgets will enjoy the company’s robust wine storage offerings that exist across the price-point spectrum, all of which enjoy the trickle-down effect of Genuwine’s high-end work. Interested collectors contacting Genuwine will be connected with their own designer dedicated to their project. The first stage involves a needs

analysis, where factors like desired bottle capacity and collecting habits are surveyed. Next is a formal design presentation that involves threedimensional renderings, material selections, climate-control plans and lighting plans. From there, Genuwine engineers and builds the custom design in its facility, where skilled woodworkers bring dreams to reality. Finally, Genuwine offers full wine cellar installation services, as well as after-sales service items, including Sommelier-guided inventory and stocking advice. Says Denomme, “With respect to wine cellars, we are exhaustively turnkey.” Trevor says, “I come from a place of one plus one equals three, the more we can connect with positive people and develop a true experience and relationship, everyone wins!” This collaboration has indeed created something quite different from the usual. And it’s this collaborative attitude as well as Nott’s custom approach to each buyer that has made his company tops in its class. In fact, this is what led Consumer Top Choice Awards, an organization that polls a quarter of a million Canadians on products and services that exhibit quality, professionalism and value, to vote Nott Auto Winnipeg’s best Luxury Car Dealer yet again. “When our clients walk in our showroom we want them to truly feel and know this is a place with real people that deal with empathy, compassion and a true sense of community. It’s how we have been able to grow our business to where it is today,” he says, pointing to their

unique inventory where car lovers can find models that truly excite. Where else in Winnipeg can you find a car company with Ferrari’s and Aston Martins alongside Lexus, Range Rovers and Teslas? And, says Nott “We are also expanding our service bays and body shop to offer the full service experience and skill to keep your domestic or foreign luxury vehicle in top shape.” Whether it’s a pre-owned or brand new luxury or non-luxury vehicle custom sourced by one of Nott’s highly skilled sales team from Nott Auto’s newly minted division, Luxury Leasing Canada Ltd., or one of the stunning cars under the roof at the new location, Nott has it all covered. With growth has come enhanced capability to offer important services such as in-house financing or leasing, worry-free flexibility combined with warrantees, and also the comprehensive industry leading 160-point Nott Family Certification. “Over the years we have operated with a win/ win integrity based mission that connects us to our Manitoba community. We have been very fortunate to have many loyal clients who not only send all their family and friends to us, but also many who don’t even consider another dealership when it’s time to buy a car. To me this is the most flattering and satisfying part of our daily experience,” says Trevor Nott. Now, with the new first of its kind Luxury Auto & Art Gallery location at Waverly and McGillivray, car buying may never be the same. “Why Nott?” he asks.

We regularly attend RWB performances and appreciate the support your publication recently gave the organization. Our RWB dancers are a great source of pride, not just for Manitobans, but also for all Canadians. We very much enjoyed reading Ian Mozdzen’s editorial and hope to see more arts coverage in upcoming issues of Style. Jen & Kenneth Holden, Winnipeg My wife and I are consistently impressed with the home design and décor related editorial that appears in each issue of Style Manitoba. Not only does your magazine feature great layouts and excellent photography of these designs, we are also wowed by the fact that so many of these builders, renovators and decorating companies are located right here in Manitoba! With every issue we peruse, my wife and I find yet another product we didn’t realize was locally available. Style Manitoba has been a great source of inspiration for many projects at our house. Want some of that quality at home? The retail wall peddles a variety of coffee and tea implements, as well as exquisite bean bags. They’ll share their secrets too! Ask the famously friendly baristas any coffee troubleshooting questions, or check out their online videos on how to make your brew top-notch.

Little Sister Coffee Maker

You’ll know it’s good because baristas pull shots and steam milk that not only smiles back with inclusive, accessible service, but with foam artfully latticed with their superbly roasted espresso! That’s right, 5 bucks gets you a table with access to over 700 games for all breeds of player. No time to play? Grab a seat and just enjoy the menu. From the open kitchen comes a flavourful line-up of munches. Hearty sandwiches include the Banh Mi with pulled pork and sriracha mayo. And not many can top their plentifully topped pizzas! The New Delhicious is an exotic treat of marinated chickpeas, bell pepper, pineapple and banana peppers. Other delights include a mean Vietnamese salad roll and a nutty Beached Kale salad.

Ask an Expert Fall is the perfect time to wipe clean your home. Often times, forced air conditioners or open windows can leave rooms feeling stale or dusty. A new season, like an internal cleanse, is the best time to reset your home. Here are 5 tips from the professionals to fall clean your home as you hunker down for a cozy season. Straighten and de-clutter your closets. Pack away your shorts and tank tops, as you make room for shaker sweaters and long pants. While you’re packing away and pulling out, be sure to purge items you no longer use.

1

Replace your furnace filter. Your furnace is the central air filter for your home. Warm breezy days may have brought in extra debris. Start a new season with clean, pure air.

2 3

With a new furnace filter, it seems appropriate to dust all ceiling fans and light fixtures to allow air to move freely over clean, dust free surfaces.

Weekends with no housework. Woohoo! I feel like a kid again!!!

After trying several cleaning companies over the last few months, a friend told me to try Take Time Home Cleaning They’re a keeper.

Clean out your fridge. Summer is a saucy season. Rid your shelves of extra dressings and sauces to make room for comfort casseroles. While you’re at it, wipe down the shelves and drawers. I recommend a fresh box of baking soda monthly to eliminate odours.

4

Lastly, strip and sanitize beds from top to bottom. Be wary of cleaning instructions, dry clean if necessary. Be sure to include pillow shams and bed skirts. I recommend invigorating fresh linens with seasonally scented dryer balls or organic scented dryer sheets. Fall is the perfect time to fall into a clean home. Bookshelf Fire in the Unnameable Country (Hamish Hamilton) by Ghalib Islam

Visit our NEW & IMPROVED SHOWROOM!

Reading the impossibly accomplished, funny, crazy, first novel by Ghalib Islam, you can’t help thinking of writers like Salman Rushdie or Gabriel Garcia Marquez. The narrator, Hedeyat, lives in a fictional, unnamed country (of course) where absurd things happen, where turmoil and tumultuous politics mix with flying carpets and mysterious maladies, and where thoughts are recorded in secret archives. Our modern times in all their corruption, war, and absurdity are reflected like a funhouse mirror. Undoubtedly, one of the novels of the year.

(Hamish Hamilton) by Bill Gaston

From one of the masters of story in Canada comes this new collection. Bill Gaston’s insight into his characters and his sharp wit make for a completely enjoyable experience. From a lovelorn arborist more attuned to trees than to people, or a bank executive who has to make a difficult decision when she believes her (out-of-this-world) sex life might be killing her, these off-kilter individuals inhabit a dark, playful world. You finish the book and marvel just how good writing can be. There’s even a story called “Geriatric Arena Grope” about a Leonard Cohen concert.

Paradise & Elsewhere (biblioasis) by Kathy Page

And speaking about great titles, Kathy Page’s book has titles like “The Kissing Disease” and “We, the Trees.” It’s a collection of stories that are almost like fables or myths, full of misunderstandings and origins. These imaginative tales are, odd, creepy, and maybe a little scary. A surprising tour guide describes the origins of mysterious ruins in one story, while waylaid tourists find their worldliness makes them ill-equipped to deal with the seemingly unsophisticated locals. These are tales that take you elsewhere, to the place where dreams cross the borders on their way to nightmares.

Adam was a happily married 50-year-old man when he suffered a stroke. His wife is his primary caregiver. It’s exhausting work, reminding your husband about what he’s forgotten: his advanced education, whether or not he likes mint tea. But everyone has secrets, including a patient and his nursemaid. Taking place in the Romanian émigré community in Montreal, this is a slim novel that nonetheless packs a punch. Felicia Mihali has given us a beautiful story with a surprising twist or two, about betrayal, forgiveness, and the mercy of patience.

STEREO Reviewed by Randal McIlroy Terje Rypdal Melodic Warrior (ECM) Norwegian guitarist/composer Terje Rypdal’s music for large ensembles grows larger, bolder and yet more mysterious. His two latest works with orchestra are much more than guitar concerti, and the signature keening of his electric instrument is more a colour in the orchestral palette – fire red and licking when the sombre mood calls for a jolt, cool blue and coiled elsewhere. Here, however, it’s the scoring for Bruckner Orchester Linz (on the title track) and Wroclaw Philharmonic Orchestra (on the second, And the Sky was Coloured with Waterfalls and Angels) that impresses highest, with stentorian trombones carving dark shapes while celeste and woodwinds tumble in space. The voices of the Hilliard Ensemble are situated beautifully in the title work, and there are moments where countertenor David James and the guitarist share the same breath. For music closer to his electric tradition, ECM has also released the bracing Crime Scene.

Someday World Eno/Hyde (Warp Records) A mind as quick and intuitive as Brian Eno’s makes exciting company in a recording studio, with music likewise if personalities mesh. Where Wrong Way Up, his pairing with John Cale, sounded more the beginnings of two interesting solo albums, his new work with Underworld’s Karl Hyde is a seamless pairing, to the point where it helps to read the liner credits to keep track of individual contributions. Spooky pop predominates, with distant singing and sharp shards of guitar over sturdy electronic rhythms (Mother of a Dog is even stranger than its title), but the closing quarter finds the two ruminative almost to devotion – Who Rings the Bell being almost hymnal. (A companion album, High Life, has just been released as well).

Play Blue Paul Bley (ECM) Montreal-born pianist Paul Bley is a storyteller, and that takes focus. The music from this 2008 concert in Oslo is typically capricious – it’s something to imagine him unfolding the twist of an idea, like the Erik Satie reference in Way Down South Suite, to anticipate which avenues are worth exploring – but he sees the conclusion, and the music is tautened by an iron logic and dramatic contour often missing in the solo rhapsodies of fellow pianist and label mate, Keith Jarrett. The man is heard on a gorgeous instrument, recorded beautifully by ECM veteran Jan Erik Kongshaug. Aged 76 when he performed this music, Bley is in handsome shape himself. Anyone who has considered purchasing quality art would agree that the best way to know how the piece will look is to see it in the intended setting. Soul Gallery is a home filled with original art, and visitors to the gallery have the experience of viewing a diverse selection of fine art in a home context.

Unique Art Gallery in a Home

“This is a unique gallery concept,” says Julie Walsh, owner of Soul Gallery Inc. “There are not many like it in Canada.” She shares that a visit to Soul Gallery might change the way an individual views or displays fine art. “Most people need the visual to feel confident to purchase. The gallery offers a warm and inviting atmosphere where art is creatively displayed in well-appointed rooms. Patrons often remark this assists them in deciding how a piece might look in their setting.” Walsh is also the owner and designer of Beautiful Spaces Design Management Inc. As a designer, she is aware of the powerful synergy between art and design. “Clearly, art and design complement one another; whether finding the right piece of art for a client or designing a space to display a chosen sculpture or painting, the relationship works beautifully.” Walsh adds that clients benefit from her dual ownership of Soul Gallery Inc. and Beautiful Spaces, as she often consults in their homes or offices to assist in finalizing an art selection, and its placement. Represents Manitoba artists More than 100 paintings are showcased throughout the three floors of Soul Gallery, located at 163 Clare Avenue. “I represent artists from across Canada – Saskatchewan, Nova Scotia, New Brunswick and Ontario, and am being approached by artists from the United States,” Walsh says. A focus of Soul Gallery is to represent contemporary Manitoba artists and as a result, Soul Gallery has been the recipient of grant support from the Ministry of Tourism, Culture and

Heritage through the Art’s Branch for the past two years. Manitoba artists include Katharine Bruce, Phil Brake, Chris Brown, Brigitte Dion, Sue Gordon, Marianne Gopalkrishna, Pat McCullough, Amanda Onchulenko, John King, Roger LaFreniere, Hugh Rice, Miriam Rudolph, Michel Saint Hilaire, Emina Tankovic and Inga Torfadottir. “I am honoured to represent all the incredible artists in the gallery, and I am humbled by their creativity,” she adds. “The fact that I get to promote them and live among their art is just amazing.” Walsh proudly points out that Soul Gallery is the first Canadian gallery selling contemporary bronze sculpture from Belgium. “A stunning bronze by Anne Vrielinck now graces the entrance of a Frank Lloyd Wright home in Phoenix, Arizona. Unique wood sculpture by Lloyd Klassen is part of the vast art collection at National Leasing in Winnipeg.” She plans to broaden her current collections in the gallery to include pieces that she will bring back from a trip to Europe this fall.

In fact, it was during a business trip to Milan, Italy that Walsh discovered the bronze sculpture that is now featured at Soul Gallery. “I fell in love with original art in the ‘90s. I met with marvelous local artists such as Bruce Head, Winston Leathers, Keith Wood, Katharine Bruce, and Tim Schouten, and began placing some of their work in my design projects and award winning showhomes.” This passion for original art has evolved into the creation of Soul Gallery Inc., which opened its doors in April 2011. Two “satellite galleries” of Soul Gallery are located at 74 Brookstone and 8 Stan Bailie Drive in Winnipeg. These showhomes, built by Hallmark Homes, are filled with original art for sale, and are open to the public for viewing. Call (204) 254-4604 for hours of operation. Soul Gallery at 163 Clare Avenue is open the first Saturday of every month 11 a.m. – 4 p.m. and by appointment Monday to Friday; call (204) 781-8259. In addition, there are several scheduled exhibitions during the year listed on the Event’s page of the website. Walsh will hold her next Exhibition and Sale at 8 Stan Bailie Drive on October 23, 2014 from 5 – 9 p.m. Come view the marvelous works of these artists represented by Soul Gallery. B y D o nn a M i nku s Once considered a luxury of the rich and famous, cosmetic plastic surgery is now much more common and accessible to everyone. Women and men alike are embracing cosmetic surgery, as the social stigma associated with these procedures continues to diminish.

the doctors frequently recommend facelift surgery to correct the deeper lines of the face, sagging jowls and loose skin of the neck. The durability of a facelift comes from tightening the layers under the skin, as well as the skin, in order to ensure the best results.

All that is required to become a candidate for cosmetic surgery is a personal desire for change, and a realistic expectation of what can be achieved, according to Dr. Ken Murray and Dr. G. B Singh, who provide consultations and nonsurgical procedures at the offices of the Plastic Surgery Associates, located at 240-444 St. Mary Avenue.

“The goal of this type of procedure is to make a better looking you,” Dr. Murray states, adding that eyelid surgery and forehead treatments are frequent aspects of facial rejuvenation surgery.

Plastic Surgery Associates of Winnipeg offers a wide range of surgical and nonsurgical cosmetic procedures to improve the appearance of the face and entire body. Both Dr. Singh and Dr. Murray are board-certified Plastic Surgeons, with many years of experience in reconstructive and cosmetic surgery. They are also members of the Canadian Society of Plastic Surgery and the Canadian Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery. People who want to reduce the visible signs of aging are going to look to facial rejuvenation options, which include nonsurgical and surgical treatments, according to Dr. Murray. Non-surgical techniques are aimed primarily at improving facial appearance and skin quality by utilizing such methods as cosmeceuticals, fillers, Botox, chemical peels and Ultherapy (a focused ultrasound treatment). “It should be noted that these types of procedures are improvers and not erasers of time,” Dr. Murray points out, “and they are not permanent.” Down time for these types of treatments is negligible, he says. Both Dr. Singh and Dr. Murray offer a full complement of surgical aesthetic procedures. For long-lasting facial rejuvenation,

What is surprising to most people who have these procedures is the recovery time is less than expected, Dr. Murray states, adding that it is usually one to three weeks, depending on bruising and how quickly it diminishes. “Patients frequently ask how long a facelift lasts,” he adds. “The duration varies from person to person, depending on genetics, lifestyle and the aging process.” A tummy tuck is a commonly performed aesthetic procedure to tighten and rejuvenate the skin of the abdomen, particularly after weight loss or pregnancies. During this procedure, excess skin is removed and muscles are tightened, Dr. Singh explains. “Some patients ask for additional surgery to be performed at the same time, such as breast augmentation or breast lift,” he says. “This is a popular combination surgery that can be performed as a day surgery procedure.” The recovery time for this and most aesthetic procedures will be between three to six weeks, Dr. Singh adds. All cosmetic surgical procedures are done as day surgeries, and they are performed at the new state-of-the-art Western Surgery Centre, located at 100–1020 Lorimer Blvd. The Western Surgery Centre has just received the 2014 Top Choice award for best Plastic Surgery Centre in Winnipeg.

Mexican Summer By Ian Mozdzen

A sunny green courtyard; my eyes fix on dangling pomegranates. I reach out and pluck one. I walk narrow streets of weathered buildings webbed with corroding metalwork. A market! More temptation! Chocolate, peppers, corn, pastry, meats and juices stir my appetite; ceramics, weaving and carvings fire the imagination. A lively brass band marches by. Was that Frida Kahlo?

systems. The stars were mapped, culinary marvels discovered, and arts, rituals and beliefs perfected.

Sound like a dream? It is: Mexico.

A grim picture, all brutally laid out in The Epic of the Mexican People (1935), a majestic series of murals by iconic modernist Diego Rivera in Mexico City’s National Palace.

DISCLAIMER: I’m married to a Mexican (i.e. I’ve got a personal tour guide. He knows when the menu offers grasshoppers).

FIRST - A brief history of Mexico... For thousands of years tribal people farmed and hunted a land of desserts, jungles, mountains, and plains. Cities rose with grand monuments, road and water

Then the Spaniards arrived. Cities fell and resources were seized; all were repressed by gunpowder and obliged to adopt a homogenizing religion. Revolutions came and went.

And there’s more Mexico where THAT Mexico came from.

Mexico City: Museum City Home to 22 million people, naturally there’s a lot to Mexico City. Its 16 distinct boroughs burst with cafés, galleries, boutiques, bookstores, markets, stunning architecture, cuisines gourmet and street - you name it, Mexico City has it. The main attraction? Museums: nearly 200 of them. Indeed, the city itself is a museum. Mexico City wasn’t always Mexico City. Since 1325 it was Tenochtitlán, the famed and feared Aztec city reigned by Moctezuma II. A flourish of canals, floating gardens, temples, palaces, and ball courts - even aquariums and zoos. Spaniards were so in awe of Tenochtitlan they likened it to a dream. Sadly, it was dismantled for today’s Mexico City. But remnants can be seen at UNESCO World Heritage

Site Museum of Templo Mayor. Right in the historic centre, you tour surviving buildings and absorb a wealth of information about the mecca and its (human sacrificing!) peoples. There’s more: a short bus ride to the city’s outskirts finds you at another UNESCO must-visit: Teotihuacánn, where men become gods. Once Mesoamerica’s largest urban centre, Teotihuacánn is an extravagant alpha city from 100 BCE. Here you march a grand “Avenue of the Dead,” see murals of wild jaguars, then climb two stunning pyramids: the sanguine “Pyramid of the Moon” (climbed by Frida Kahlo and Trotsky in the 2002 film Frida), and the monumental “Pyramid of the Sun” (extra gasp-worthy for panoramic views and arduous 234 ft. climb). To make sense of it all? The National Museum of Anthropology’s 20 acres of exhibits put the brain into pre-Columbian overdrive, but standouts include the massive Aztec “Stone of the Sun,” giant Olmec stone heads, and exquisite green Moctezuma headdress. Cultural practices surviving colonization are also showcased, like Totonac “Flying Men.” These dancing daredevils symbolically spiral upside-down around a tall pole. (If you’re lucky, you’ll catch them still at it!) Projecting past into present are the Rufino Tamayo Museum and Anahuacalli Museum, both radically reinterpreting ancient pyramid architecture with vastly different artistry.

At Tamayo, expect mind-bending original exhibits and the collection of famed artist Rufino Tamayo (18991991). At Anahaucalli, one third of Diego Rivera’s jaw-dropping 60,000-piece collection of pre-Hispanic sculpture is regally displayed in monolithic black volcanic stone.

Casa Oaxaca. This restaurant is also an art gallery, and you taste it in their cheese-stuffed pumpkin flowers, chamois-drizzled ceviche, thick spicy mole, and toasted-beef topped avocado melon soup. Oaxaca’s food rocked our world. Earthquakes help, too - July 29th shocked us with a 6.4 rocker!

But no face (other than the Virgin of Guadalupe’s) flashes more frequently here than that of Diego’s wife, Frida Kahlo. Thankfully, the Frida Kahlo Museum is a 1954 time capsule of the renowned artist’s last living year. You’ll see original and unfinished works, personal collections and memorabilia. Frida’s distinctive Tehuana dresses and secreted prosthetics also get special attention.

Veracruz & Yucatan: Gulf Heritage Two more must-see states reside around the Gulf of Mexico: Veracruz and my husband’s home - Yucatan. Tropical Veracruz is rich with musical tradition and colonial heritage. Islanded by rivers and sugar-cane fields, Tlacotalpan has both. This little town is home to Agustín Lara (famed singer/songwriter who rubbed elbows with Edith Piaf and Nat King Cole); and it’s UNESCO-stamped for its perfectly preserved 18th century design.

For a living museum? Plaza Garibaldi - here mariachis eagerly serenade 24/7.

Oaxaca: Cultural Oasis Oaxaca possesses one of the world’s most diverse ecosystems, and thanks to isolating mountain geography, it’s also home to 16 indigenous groups.

Once a key port, Tlacotalpan’s importance faded due to the railroad, but luckily, it remained untouched, leaving it firmly circa 1700s. You could spend days wandering streets (we did!) admiring Andalucian colonnades, Caribbeann arches, red-tile roofs and colourful facades.

Turn one way, you dig into a flower-stuffed tamale; turn another, and you’re soothed by a classic Champurrado (chocolate atole); turn yet another, you’re romanced by intricately patterned rugs, artful pottery, or fantastical woodcarving. Is that a bowl of roasted grasshoppers? But Oaxaca really gets heads spinning in July, month of Guelaguetza, an age-old Zapotec celebration of “exchange” that’s grown into an annual onslaught of parades, mini-festivals, roving bands, performances, and artisan fairs. Two events at the city’s sacred hilltop amphitheatre are the heart of it all: Donaji & the Guelaguezta showcase. Donaji sees a massive cast blowing conch shells, fighting with pre-Hispanic weapons, and dashing with flaming torches to re-enact the martyrdom of Donaji, a Zapotec Princess caught betwixt love and politics. Regional pride fired up - “Viva Oaxaca!” and “Viva la Guelaguetza!” resound with fireworks throughout the valley - Donaji dovetails into the Guelaguetza. Unfolding over five hours, the Guelaguetza performance lets Oaxacans put their best feet forward with a spectacle of traditional regalia, music and folk dance - even live turkeys are included!

Each “sharing” concludes with offerings; hats, crafts, sweets, and even whole pineapples are hurled into the uproarious crowds! Turkeys not included. Guelaguetza aside, out-of-town excursions are also fascinating; you see a 2000 year old Montezuma cypress tree, tour ruins like mosaic-rich Mitla and mountaintop Monte Albán, and even swim in Tlacochahuaya’s cliff-side pools near spectacular petrified waterfalls. You also meet mezcal. Advice: Forget tequila! Go mezcal! A smoky alcohol made from fire-roasted maguey plants, mezcal is an “elixir of the gods” (rightfully so - it proofs upwards of 55%). As they say: “For everything bad, mezcal; for everything good, the same.”

And flamingo territory is where our Mexican dream comes to an end: Yucatan Peninsula. Like Mexico City, Mérida was established in the 16th century by Spaniards who built it by dismantling a Mayan city -- T’hó. Enduring regardless, the Mayan ensure that traditional food is plentiful, culture vibrant, and archaeological sites breathtaking. The chocolate is also killer, especially at ki’XOCOLATL, offering grove-direct “bean to bar” artisanal chocolate. (I’m savouring dark chocolate with pink pepper from Veracruz right now.) And ttlyudas and mezcal are just a jaunt from our downtown home - at apoala, a new authentic gourmet Oaxcan eatery. (Grasshoppers knowingly and happily included!)

Naturally, mezcalaries are everywhere you turn. A standout: Mezcaleria Simaruba. This funky spot is helmed by the Victors Chagoya, Jr. & Sr. Passionate about mezcal after tutelage by remote mountain distillers, Victor Jr. delivers comprehensive tastings that’ll forever change your taste buds. For a mere 120 pesos, he divulges trade tricks, dispels myths, defines varieties and distinguishes productions. You get a fleet of testers, too - with orange, wormed salt and cheese dipped in (grasshopper!) chilli sauce, transitioning you between mezcals. At the end, your fave’s poured full. Also on every corner? My new favourite food: ttlayuda. A large corn tortilla gets spread with refried beans and asiento (pork lard), loaded with cabbage, avocado, and stretchy Oaxacan cheese, then crisped over coals. Grilled meat tops it off. Slather with salsa and guacamole (maybe grasshopper, too!) and ... WOW! No one grills them better than Tlayudas de Libres Doña Martha – they’ve been doing smokin’ business from their street bbq for over 60 years. From street to rooftop - another marvel is the elevated AUTUMN 2014 | STYLE MANITOBA | 45

Curve appeal By Leigh Patterson Photography Michael Roberts A thoughtful design, rock solid underpinnings and a homeowner’s vision came perfectly together in this stunning, completely renewed yard in East St. Paul. Designed and landscaped by Kyle Thibeault, owner of Silver Stone Landscaping, the yard shows no remnants of its former self. Gone is the stamped concrete driveway. The dated deck is a distant memory. Old garden beds have faded to black soil. “We ripped everything out and started from scratch,” says Thibeault. This meant literally reshaping the earth, front and back, creating berms and changing elevations. Thibeault and his Silver Stone crew hauled in boulders and 500 yards of crushed limestone as the base for the extensive hardscaping, which includes retaining walls, patios and five water features. The ambitious overhaul now allows the homeowners to entertain and enjoy family time in what is essentially a series of outdoor rooms. These spaces are linked together by curvilinear retaining walls, rounded garden beds, undulating stone pathways and graceful terraced steps on gently sloping lawns. The homeowners desired a naturalized look and at the same time, all the conveniences, bells and whistles available for modern landscaping projects. The outdoor kitchen, for example, is an entertainer’s dream, complete with pizza oven, refrigerator, built-in barbeque, stainless steel storage drawers and garbage dispenser. Thibeault used retaining wall stone from Barkman’s Rosetta Collection in the “Copper Canyon” colour for the kitchen walls, which are topped with custom concrete countertops. “Roman” pavers used for the kitchen floor are also used on pathways and on the new driveway to maintain the cohesive look found throughout the yard.

48 | STYLE MANITOBA | AUTUMN 2014

The kitchen is conveniently located just below the expansive glassed-in deck off the back of the house. Here, Thibeault used Trex® composite decking consisting of eco-friendly recycled wood and plastic. He added a stone veneer to the base of the deck to integrate it with the house and yard. Thibeault included three water features in the front and two in the back. All are built into raised planters to function as visual points of interest. And all are equipped with basins and pumps that recirculate water into continuous streams that add action and sound. One of the water features located at the rear of the yard also acts as a transitional point before one steps down to an intimate fire pit area. Anchored by a flagstone patio, the fire pit area is surrounded by retaining walls that define the space and provide privacy. Thibeault ingeniously “cut” into several rotating walls to incorporate several of the large, rusty black boulders he included in the yard to add dimension and texture. The homeowners wanted a property that would change with the seasons. Thibeault delivered with a variety of shrubs and perennials anchored in beds of decorative stone imported from Wisconsin. He planted 70 mature trees around the yard, including spruce, Amur cherry, linden, spring snow crab-apple, Thunderchild crab-apple, Manchurian ash, green ash, Ivory silk tree, lilac and basswood. All of the natural and man-made features can be enjoyed into the evening hours thanks to an extensive lighting system that highlights trees and water features, and is built into stairs and retaining wall caps. An underground irrigation system helps keep the newly transformed property as low maintenance as possible.

vision by building the yard in a matter of several months. The homeowners are thrilled with their yard’s renaissance beyond its obvious aesthetics. Most importantly, they are enjoying the many qualities their revived outdoor space now contributes to their family’s lifestyle.

The yard is high tech, too. The lighting and water features were linked to the home automation system so the homeowners can control these conveniently with their iPhone. Following extensive consultations with his clients to ensure their needs and wants would be met in his design, Thibeault achieved their AUTUMN 2014 | STYLE MANITOBA | 49

Hot off the Press Krevco turns up the heat on Manitoba’s marketplace by adding Bison Plumbing & Heating to its list of brands under the year-round, gotta-have store banner Krevco Lifestyles. Krevco, your one-stop, gotta-have store, can keep you moving from season to season with pools, hot tubs, and swim spas in summer, Embers fireplaces in the fall, and Flaman Fitness equipment for a year-round hot body. So it only makes sense that pairing with one of the city’s most well respected and long-term plumbing and heating companies means more at your gotta-have store. “I decided I needed to ‘turn up the heat’ on myself, and keep the company growing into a true one-stop shop,” says Krevco President Don Carson. “So I thought while we were helping people close up their pools, maybe we could service their furnace for the fall. And when we open their pool in the summer, we could service their air conditioning. And when we sell steam showers, why not install them with our own plumbers on staff? Krevco along with Bison Plumbing & Heating’s team of service providers can help create those year-round, gotta have services.” Bison Plumbing & Heating have serviced the Manitoba market for over 30 years and have built a solid reputation for their quality service,

opportunity to create a meaningful long-term career for themselves within Krevco.

“We’ve always believed in being upfront with our customers about the cost of repair or replacement before we start, so there are no surprises,” states Boris Milinkovic, President. “We’ve also developed a comfort level with our service people so that customers are never worried about the technicians coming into their house, or about the cleanup after service.”

“The pool and spa industry does not have a journeyman program. By employing plumbers and gas fitters at Krevco, we now have a chance to set up an apprentice program for our service technicians. So Krevco has to not only turn up the heat on our marketplace, but on our own internal infrastructure. We want employees to come get an established career. You can be a pool installer, a duct cleaner, a gas fitter or plumber. Just come find your niche,” states Carson, adding the synergy of the services between Krevco and Bison ensures there are two great companies to work for, where you won’t be pigeonholed into one department. “Now we’ll be the year-round, gotta-have store with the full-service, gotta-have service technicians.”

Carson adds it’s also important to him that Bison is another Manitoba-based, locally owned company. “It’s a Manitoba company that employs Manitoba people year round,” he says, adding Milinkovic will be running this division of Krevco, which will utilize furnace and air conditioner products from top providers such as Napoleon and Lennox while integrating its service team into all that Krevco currently sells. “Customers are always looking for people to trust. People trust Krevco to service their pools and hot tubs, and they trust Bison for their services, plumbing, heating and air conditioning wise. So together we can be there to do more for those customers.”

And, as always, Krevco continues with their gotta-have products, and the high-quality services they’re known for. Having just won the Consumers Choice Award for best pool builder and hot tub retailer for the eighth year in a row, the company has also expanded in to Saskatoon with a new store, making Krevco the latest onestop shop in Saskatchewan.

The amalgamation is also giving Krevco employees, and potential employees the

After several precious months of enjoying their seasonal splendour and abundance, it’s soon time to reluctantly put our yards to bed. Taking care of some upkeep now will give you a head start on enjoying your yard that much sooner when spring arrives.

MEMBER OF: MEMBER OF:

Yard care: Now is the time to over-seed and fertilize your grass to ensure a healthy lawn come spring. Rake up leaves, mulch them and add them to compost or top dress your garden beds. In Winnipeg, you can bag leaves, and put them out on yard waste collection day for pickup. Clear garden beds of dead plant material and trim back perennials, leaving seed heads intact for birds to enjoy and to add visual interest during the winter. Autumn is the best time of year to trim tree branches and shrubs. Outdoor living: These items served your family and friends well this summer, so treat your outdoor living products well to ensure their longevity. Clean patio furniture, then cover with a weather-resistant cover or put into storage. Cover and store your barbeque. If you have an in-ground pool, install a smart pool cover to protect your investment. Home maintenance: Preparing your home’s exterior for winter’s cold blast prevents inconvenience later. Remove debris from eavestroughs and downspouts. Clean windows thoroughly. Get your furnace inspected and cleaned, and install a new filter. Check exterior vents and clear out dryer lint and debris. Yes, summer’s glories are fading, and autumn is here, but if you tackle these projects, you can enjoy the fall and winter knowing that when spring does come (and it will), you’ll be ready.

outdoorl i v i n g Starting a small business takes ingenuity and imagination. Sustaining that business demands commitment and determination. Brant Boychuk, owner and operator of Lawn Boys Ltd. has been successful on both fronts. While many lawn maintenance businesses come and go, Lawn Boys has been providing property maintenance services to customers in Winnipeg and surrounding areas for the past 25 years. During that time, the company has continued to grow and add new services. “I started Lawn Boys in 1989,” Boychuk says. “I was attending university and working at Woolco Department Store, and along with two friends, decided to give the lawn maintenance business a try.” While the three are still friends, only Boychuk has remained in the business. “I have grown the business from a 1976 Ford truck to about 10 trucks and eight crews,” he says. Lawn Boys main service is lawn care, but the company also provides snow removal and landscaping services. “We specialize in providing top-quality, year-round maintenance at a competitive price,” he states. Boychuk attributes the longevity of his business to hard work and resiliency, as well as loyalty -- both to and from his customers. “We work seven days a week, 24 hours a day – as needed,” Boychuk states. “That has allowed us to build good relationships with long-standing customers. Some of our customers have become close friends, and some have even joined the company. Many of my employees have been with me for eight to 10 years. Some have left and come back, after realizing the value this company offers. Our employees are treated like family, and all full-time employees are offered a benefit package.” Lawn Boys’ customers range from small yards to large exclusive contracts. “I value all of my customers. No property is too large or too small. And all my customers get the same quality service,” he says. In addition to property maintenance, Lawn Boys Ltd. offers a variety of landscaping services. Softscape includes property grading, turf repair and installation of soil and sod. “We

Other services Lawn Boys offers are gravel driveway repairs and levelling; installation and repairs of irrigation systems; and a range of tree services, including tree pruning and shrub shaping, stump grinding and various types of weed control. While the business has evolved over the years, Boychuk is quick to point out that lawn maintenance is still the core of the business. “I know how much competition there is out there, so it’s important for us to remain humble and thankful for all the business we have acquired, and will continue to do in the future,” he says.

example, next year we are thinking about only offering spring clean-up to customers that use our yard maintenance services throughout the year. Of course, we would still maintain the one-time clean-ups for our regular customers, but not for a single service, single season customer.” In addition to an emphasis on quality service, Lawn Boys is committed to doing its part to be environmentally responsible. This includes recycling and providing lawn mulching services whenever possible. To further reduce unnecessary landfill dumping, clippings are recycled to compost yards throughout the city and surrounding area, he says. “I have been privileged to serve the community for many years, so I want to contribute to its wellbeing,” Boychuk concludes, noting that Lawn Boys proudly supports a number of charities throughout in the city. For more information about Lawn Boys Ltd., visit their website at winnipeglawnboys.com

“My philosophy is steady growth, at a controlled rate,” he continues. “This is particularly true in the landscaping end of the business. We have experienced landscape crews and the best equipment. But we purposely limit the number of landscaping jobs we take on because we want to focus on quality, personalized and customized service.” Future plans include differentiating Lawn Boys from the competition by providing more services to existing customers, as opposed to increasing its volume of customers, Boychuk adds. “For AUTUMN 2014 | STYLE MANITOBA | 53

outdoorl i v i n g Better View Whether it’s a beautifully landscaped yard, or a scenic lakeside spot, you don’t want your view to be obstructed by your deck. Prairie Accent provides innovative railings that not only provide a clean look but will also open up your view. Owner Dan Cosens states that 90 percent of their railing work is now done with glass. The company offers a six mm, 10 mm, and the new 12 mm topless option, which can be installed with a half post ensuring more of a view and less of the railing. A prime example of this system can be seen at 11 Trailside Crescent in South Pointe. Prairie Accent worked with Artista Homes to create a 12-millimetre glass system above the garage for a unique balcony. If clients have a design in mind, Prairie Accent can create a custom welded system with aluminum railing. And since the aluminum is powder-coated, the railings will have a great look, and remain maintenance free for years to come. When it comes to low-maintenance nothing can compare to Weatherdek. Unlike conventional decking materials, Weatherdek’s vinyl membranes completely waterproof the

deck or roof deck area with an attractive and durable, slip resistant finish. Cosens states vinyl decking needs to be installed correctly to maintain the waterproof

advantage. Prairie Accent has the most accomplished installers in Manitoba with up to 20 years experience in vinyl decking, ensuring it will stay dry and looking as beautiful as the view.

outdoorliving Front & Focal The front door of a home has always been the focal point of the exterior. But as more house designs feature prominent garages, their doors are becoming just as important to the facade. The doors featured here for this new custombuilt home showcases this trend perfectly. Designed and installed by Overhead Door of Winnipeg, the garage doors are generously larger than the average height and width, and are made of powder-coated aluminum, custom ordered from the company’s manufacturer, with dual pane solar bronze glass. “The design goal was a uniquely modernstyled door that shines in the daylight from the exterior while lighting up the interior as the garage is used and worked in almost daily,” explains Taylor (TJ) Wallace, Marketing and Operations, Overhead Door. He adds that colour wise, the company went with a matt-black that complemented the exterior colour and didn’t overwhelm it. “It’s a great fit with a beautiful entrance planned for the future.”

Wallace notes that along with highly customized aluminum doors, they are also seeing a lot more wood-grain style steel doors being ordered by homebuilders. ‘“Steel and aluminum doors simply fit our climate better, and with the new wood-grain

series and designs that have come out from Overhead Door Corp., their price/value ratio is fantastic,” he adds.

If you’re looking for a new home, and your fantasy is to live in a forest-like setting, surrounded by scenic parks with a view of sparkling lakes – just minutes from shops and services – then the Neighbourhoods of Bridgwater just might be your dream come true! Consisting of three residential neighbourhoods – all within walking distance of a future Town Centre that will offer commercial, retail and professional services as well as multi-family housing – the Neighbourhoods of Bridgwater will appeal to homeowners who want to coexist with nature.

Neighbourhoods made for walking By Donna Minkus

The entire development was designed with pedestrians and cyclists in mind, according to Dwayne Rewniak, Acting Director of Housing Delivery and Land Development, Manitoba Housing. ”When the neighbourhoods are complete, there will be over 80 kilometres of connected pathways and sidewalks that will converge in the Town Centre.” One of the many attractive features of the Bridgwater area is its diversity of housing, Rewniak points out. “Whether a single-family home, townhouse or apartment, homeowners have the opportunity to find a home that is uniquely theirs.”

Bridgwater Forest

Bridgwater Forest is more than 90 percent complete, Rewniak says, adding that of the 1100 lots that have been developed, over 1070 have been sold. Homes in Bridgwater Forest range from single family to multi-family units. “Single-family lots include standard laneless lots, amenity lots, which back onto a lake or park, and laned lots (smaller lots with back lane access). The multi-family units include rentals, town houses, and condominiums,” explains Rewniak.

Bridgwater Lakes Bridgwater Lakes is the second neighbourhood development, and is comprised entirely of single-family homes. “Bridgwater Lakes homes are built alongside three lakes, paved walkways and abundant green space, including a central park that is the focal point of the neighbourhood,” Rewniak notes. “The homes blend traditional style with distinctively modern architectural features that underscore the uniqueness of the neighbourhood.” When completed, 1190 single-family homes will be available in Bridgwater Lakes, with approximately 50 percent being visitable homes. To date, more than 850 single-family lots have been sold and over 500 homes are occupied. New showhomes in Bridgwater Lakes on Lakebend Road and Appleford Gate will be open to the public in September, and featured during the Parade of Homes this fall.

Bridgwater Trails Bridgwater Trails is the third residential neighbourhood. The first of two phases of the development is currently being serviced, and construction is scheduled to start later this year. When completed, there will be 1040

single-family homes and over 1000 multi-family units. Showhomes will be available for viewing by fall 2015.

Town Centre Bridgwater Centre, located in the heart of the three residential neighbourhoods, is a large area and therefore development will take place over time, Rewniak says. “Population will drive commercial and retail development in the Town Centre,“ he adds, noting that a number of commercial parcels have been sold to date, and construction is expected to start later this year. Bridgwater Centre will also include 1000 multifamily units, and construction of those units is underway. Showhomes will be available for viewing in the Town Centre by spring of 2015, Rewniak states. The Neighbourhoods of Bridgwater is a 20-25 year project, and when complete, will boast 5000 single-family homes and 3000 multi-family units. “The goal of this development was to provide housing diversity, increase density and create a walkable community. And in less than seven years, we are well on our way to achieving that goal,” says Rewniak.

homes and neighbourhoods

Bridgwater Forest was the first neighbourhood to be developed, so it is the most mature of the three residential neigbourhoods. Bridgwater Forest combines the charm and character of traditional neighbourhoods with the modern conveniences of paved walkways and a community fountain. It is also one of Canada’s first neighbourhoods to offer a selection of visitable homes - houses with wide doors and hallways and no-step entries, making them easily accessible for young families with strollers or people who use walkers or wheelchairs.

Ultimate custom-built designs B y T odd L ewys

Building a home is the largest personal investment you will make in your lifetime. With that in mind, Huntington Homes has conceived a system designed to deliver a custom-built home that meets all your wants and needs - right down to the most minute detail.

In short, it’s a system that will identify those wants and needs on an ultra-specific, room-by-room basis – as well as the home’s overall layout.

Equally as important, the system will ensure the home is rock-solid – and efficient – in its design. “Livability is only part of the functionality equation,” said Swan. “Our goal with every home we build is twofold: first, we want to create a home that will stand the test of

time. Second, we want that home to be as energy-efficient as possible. A structurally sound, energyefficient home will be more comfortable, and hence, more enjoyable to live in. And when a home stands the test of time, it enhances its future value, which makes it a sound investment.” Building a home that fits a customer perfectly right down to the smallest detail yields another benefit, he adds. “A home is an awesome financial investment that you get to live in and enjoy for many years, unlike any other investment a person can make. When you make such a long-term commitment, you want it to function in a way that will meet your daily wants and needs perfectly for the entire time you live in it. The only way to ensure

that is to custom-design the home in the most comprehensive way possible. That means designing a home that not only meets your needs today, but will meet your needs for 10, 20 or even 30 years if you choose to live there for that long.” The ultimate dividend of designing a home in such an ultra-specific way? “It will enhance your lifestyle in a way that you’ll enjoy life that much more,” Swan said. “That’s why we came up with the Guidance Program System – to ensure that we build a home that’s truly custom-fit to a customer’s want and needs. When you optimize the design of a home down to the smallest details, the people living in the home are going to enjoy that home that much more for as long as they live in it.”

homes and neighbourhoods

“It’s our Guidance Program System, or GPS,” says Rob Swan, co-owner of Huntington Homes. “It’s an in-depth, step-by-step system designed to identify all of our clients’ wants and needs so we can build in all the different features they want to have in their new homes.”

“This system ensures that the home design will incorporate design concepts and layouts that are tailored specifically to the requirements of our clients,” he explains. “It not only makes sense to build a home layout that works, but also on a room-by-room basis, which allows you to come up with a home that’s the ultimate custombuilt design. Once complete, each space will look and function the way it will work best to suit our client’s lifestyle and needs, right down to the smallest details.”

Varied Design Adaptability for a homebuilder must be key - whether moulding a home design to a development, or moving with the trends of the time. Arlt Homes feature three showhomes at the Fall 2014 Parade of Homes that showcase this kind of versatility. One of the builder’s newest designs is 106 Lake Bend Road in Bridgwater Lakes, a 1,943-square-foot, walkout bungalow that boasts three main level bedrooms and two in the lower portion. This home features a mixture of texture elements used to create warmth and contrast. Caramel-coloured oiled oak hardwood floors, a stone fireplace, and a kitchen backsplash comprised of natural stone, glass, and marble create an environment that’s comfortable, yet current. Arlt Homes’ Sage Creek showhome at 15 East Plains Drive offers a cooler, contemporary style. The two-storey walkout features a lighter interior with mid-tone wood accents, gray washed, oiled oak hardwood floors, and a twotone kitchen with a medium hue base and white upper cupboards for an airy feel.

This home is very family focused, allowing homeowners to use it in a way that’s right for them. Whether it’s shutting the den door for some privacy, gathering in the great room, or having guests stay in the lower level bedroom, it’s a livable, workable home.

Finally, Artlt’s offering at 5 Windrush Place in Pritchard Farm Southlands Village is a Parade of Homes favourite for the builders. Set on a fully treed lot, the 1,693-square-foot bungalow complements the landscape and view.

cabinets in the kitchen, juxtaposed with quartz countertops and modern light fixtures.

The same is true of 33 East Plains Drive in Sage Creek. The walkout bungalow features a glassed-in loft that overlooks the dramatic ceiling details of the main living space and the backyard lake. The home features an old world meets new feel, including elements such as hand-scraped hickory flooring and maple

Their final fall entry is the luxury lane home at 3 Water Lily Lane in Sage Creek. The 1,500-square-foot bi-level features an open concept with vaulted ceilings, an oversized garage, and added amenities such as granite countertops and an alfresco terrace in the backyard.

The Perfect Perks Just because a house comes with a hefty price tag does not mean it has all the perks. Hearth Homes’ fall showhomes prove you can have the finer things, but still at a reasonable rate without sacrificing quality. The company’s showhome in Bridgwater Lakes at 112 Lake Bend Road is the perfect example. With 2,758-square-feet of finished area, this walkout bungalow was designed for a niche market - an owner looking to have a good sized, modern house with ample amenities, but without the expense. Still, this home offers desirable perks that add value without breaking the bank - the HanStone countertops, waterfall countertops, and glass tiled backsplash in the kitchen; the unique beverage centre that offers instant hot water; the screened-in raised deck;

Finding Luxury This year’s fall Parade of Home offering at 30 Casselman Crescent in Oak Bluff West is an excellent example of why Artista Homes is Manitoba’s national award-winning luxury homebuilder. Opulence is prevalent as soon as you step onto the home’s large concrete stamped driveway leading to a three-car garage, and lay eyes on its welcoming front facade featuring large windows, and inset roofing lighting. Inside, the soaring 12-foot ceiling in the front foyer is dotted with modern pendent lights, which complement the stainless steel railings of the glass staircase leading up to the main level. To the left, a glass walled office overlooks the large-tiled foyer. The entrance and great room are divided by an earth-toned brick-surrounded three-sided fireplace, which can also be seen from the dining area and kitchen. The large bright windows offer contrast to the dark Quartz countertops and maple cabinets. The master bedroom boasts the same brickwork as the fireplace as an accent wall that separates the sleeping area from the

ensuite, where you’ll find a custom shower, dual sinks, and jetted tub with brick surround. The main floor features a second bedroom with walk-in closet, and a laundry room with sink and Quartz counters.

The fully finished lower level offers a 20-foot bar ledge set on a brick wall, as well as a wet bar, an open-concept theatre room with fireplace, gym area, and additional bedroom.

What You Want homes and neighbourhoods

Don’t fall too hard in love with Southwynn Home’s 41 Deer Pointe Drive. Even though it’s a pre-sold build, it’s a prime example of the custom homebuilder’s ability to create exactly what clients want. The walkout bungalow, which overlooks a pond, is set on a large, unique three-sided lot allowing for the house to have more width. Instead of the attached three-car garage protruding from the front, it has been placed on the side of the lot. The outward style of the home is very angular and modern, which also translates inside, where the ceiling heights are varied, ranging from nine to 13 feet high in the great room. The foyer also boasts innovative styling where lofts were constructed between the trusses, giving the ceiling depth and contrast. The floor is also specialized featuring large three-foot tiles. The main floor offers simple clean lines, a flowing open concept, and gray and beige tones giving the house a modern, yet warm feel. Large windows in the great room provide ample light, while the morning sun can be enjoyed in the four-season sunroom off the dining area.

Since the homeowners have two dogs, they opted for laminate flooring in a five-inch plank. And, along with two bedrooms, they had Southwynn create a special mudroom/dog

room, complete with dog shower, to finish the main floor. The finished lower level offers two additional bedrooms, a great room, and a flex room.

The large bungalow’s design is that of contemporary with traditional elements. The cedar timbers and soffits, and paving stone driveway lend themselves to the earthy feel, while the addition of cobblestone and timberbark Hardie board are distinguishably modern.

The kitchen is host to custom cabinets created by Urban Effects by Norcraft Cabinetry. The unique door style, named Auburn, features a curved edging rather than the traditional squared look. The Karena Rose coloured, solid maple cabinets are broken up by Spectrum Seedy glass inserts in the wall units flanking the stove, and brightened by Casearstone countertops in the light Frosty Carrina hue. The kitchen boasts ample space for storage. Frosty Carrina finds its way on to the dual sink countertop, which features almost a divided design with a raised centre between each sink. The undermount tub also features a Casearstone surround and tile backsplash with ribbon tile accents.

The 1,418-square-foot lower level features 8.5foot ceilings, as well large unobstructed open areas, thanks to the steel beam construction that removes teleposts from sight. And, since the home is built on a lookout lot, the lower level also features large windows, some as lofty as 10-feet wide. Along with a private media room, there are two bedrooms, and a three-piece bath situated away from the main areas. There is an additional flex-room for a gym, office, or whatever a family may need it for at that time.

Pick and Choose You’ll be hard pressed to decide which of the six Gino’s Homes showhomes you’ll like best this fall. Maybe it will be the big lake house at 136 Lakebend Road; the two-storey in Amber Trails; or possibly the first showing of 14 Heronswood Path in Waterford Green. But, if you had to pick one, 24 Waterstone in South Pointe would be an ideal selection. The walkout bungalow features roughly 4,600-square-feet of living space, and its vastness is enhanced by the varying height of the home’s ceilings, which range from nine to 17 feet in some spots. The main reason for the variance is the home’s unique 350-foot loft, which overlooks the great room. The space, which can be used as an office or den area, also boasts it’s own 100-square-foot balcony, which overlooks the landscaped front elevation.

On the other side of the noise Oak Bluff West has stylish design, open spaces just minutes from the city B y A dam D ooley

“It’s just nicely on the other side of the noise.” Eric Vogan’s description of Oak Bluff West summarizes the laid-back lifestyle in one of the hottest communities in the greater Winnipeg area. As Vice President of community development for Qualico, Vogan is a veteran of Winnipeg’s real estate scene. He’s worked on many of the city’s best known and most popular subdivisions, but he says there’s something really unique and special about Oak Bluff West. “You can buy a 40-foot lot anywhere in the city, but you can’t often find a 70-foot lot that is so close to shopping, schools and the city,” he says. Located just a stone’s throw from the intersection of McGillivray Boulevard and the Perimeter Highway, Oak Bluff West boasts large lots, low taxes and beautifully designed homes from seven of the city’s top homebuilders.

The large lots mean that each house is well set back from its neighbours and can accommodate three-car garages easily. The extra space brings with it more privacy, outdoor space and wonderful light. “When we were planning the neighbourhood, we were going for a very relaxed atmosphere,” notes Vogan. “The houses stand well by

themselves, but besides the extra outdoor space, it’s the interiors that really benefit. The light comes in so well. You really notice it once you’re inside.” The area is attracting a mix of young families moving out from the city, and many locals looking to upgrade their house while keeping their rural lifestyle. “We’ve spent a lot of effort getting the details right,” says Glenda Sobie, General Manager with Ventura Custom Homes. “You’ll see many of our homes take advantage of the wide lots with large porches and garages complemented by spacious, modern interiors.”

Ventura will be introducing its new Tucson bungalow design in the area, which features a multitude of stand-out details from its custom entertainment unit, tempered glass railing system, huge ensuite and large chef ’s kitchen to nine-foot basement ceilings and a spacious, modern layout. On the outside, Sobie says they will be adding some nice landscaping touches. “It’s the kind of place where you can sit out in the backyard around a big fire with friends and family,” she says. “You can tell many of the residents love the outdoors, too. They have ATVs, boats and snowmobiles.” For the outdoorsy, Oak Bluff West will have a large network of walking and biking trails that will be integrated into the entire community. The trails will lead straight to Oak Bluff ’s K-8 school and the town’s recreational facilities, for example.

Master plan, quiet streets “It’s a great little town. We spent a lot of time working with the RM of Macdonald to make sure the master plan was well thought out,” notes Vogan.

The master plan melds the new Oak Bluff West area into the existing town. Quiet streets gently curve around the area giving each home its own special introduction as you drive up. Many of the homes back on to green space, which provides a relaxed atmosphere and more breathing room. By the time the neighbourhood is complete, it will have more than 800 new homes. With more than 130 lots already sold, Oak Bluff West is really catching on. Phase 1 is nearly sold out, but there are many great lots now available in Phase 2 for buyers to choose from. “I think that people are attracted by the fact that they can find a nice, spacious home in a quiet, safe neighbourhood that is only minutes from city shopping,” states Vogan. “You have a beautiful home with room in your driveway and room in your yard. And it is every bit as financially accessible as any home in the city.” Participating builders in Oak Bluff West include Artista Homes, Paradigm Custom Homes, Parkhill Homes, Randall Homes, Somerville Design Homes, Sterling Homes and Ventura Custom Homes. Many of the builders will have a new showhome open on Orchard Gate this fall.

Building Excitement By Carly Peters

Award-winning Parkhill Homes

According to Lori Thorsteinson, Sales Manager Parkhill Homes and owner / broker of Loren Realty, the Oak Bluff display home is one that offers very wide appeal. For example, the three-bedroom residence offers an open plan design that means room for growing families.

“The kitchen, dining room and great room expanse is made for family living in a design that is transitional,” she says, noting that the kitchen features a huge island area as well as state-of-the-art appliances and top of the line surfaces throughout. And the great room offers a gas fireplace to make entertaining more enjoyable.

More, the property at 10 Orchard Gate features a 24-foot covered deck that extends outward from the open plan in a very complete design flow. Indeed, the deck is fully accessible from the master bedroom where residents also find a large and fully appointed ensuite.

“We are known as a builder that does not cut corners on the details. This is why our homes have wood structural basement flooring, and this property comes with a triple garage to hold all the toys for the best in large lot suburban living.”

Lori points out that the property is built to a very high spec with energy efficient furnace and other eco attributes designed to keep energy usage at a minimum while maximizing in-home comfort. The house is even set up for full home

media with wiring installed for hi-def video, distributed audio and even for a home theatre in the lower level area. “The advantage to building with Parkhill Homes is our custom approach, where we sit with clients and really listen. We are one of Manitoba’s most experienced new home builders. It’s this experience in combination with our ability to meet the ever changing needs of our customers that have made us leaders in new home excitement.”

When Qualico Communities’ Eric Vogan talks about what kind of community he envisioned Sage Creek would become, the word he uses is “complete.” By that, he doesn’t just mean finished—though with more than 1,200 homes, the neighbourhood is already well on its way. For Vogan, he’s referring to the concept of creating a place people can call home at any stage of their life. Whether you’re a first-time homebuyer shopping for that first house or someone ready for all the luxury that a custom build can provide, a professional in need of a carefree condo or an empty-nester looking for something smaller yet still special, at Sage Creek every lifestyle has been carefully considered.

Sage Creek: Striking the Right Balance

Vogan says Sage Creek is actually a community where people can stay and thrive through all the changes life brings. “The focus for us today is building neighbourhoods of more than one flavour,” says Vogan. “We have an opportunity—and a responsibility—to be truly diverse. That’s what makes a really healthy community.”

As a builder, Wickstrom points out that giving homebuyers flexibility is the key. “One client even reimagined one of our craftsman style designs and gave it a really modern theme,” he

says. Working together closely, Hearth Homes and owners find a way to give new homes the elements they desire to bring their vision to life. “When you use a custom builder like Hearth, people can really make each room their own.”

Just like their counterpart, Randall Homes is always thinking about how to bring original insights into each new home project. “Collaboration really gets our juices going,” says Randall’s Jason Jaquet. He’s especially excited about Stone Creek, the upcoming condos he and his team are building in the neighbourhood. “The floor plans are dynamite!” he says, adding, “I always keep in mind, would I want to live there?” That’s how he and his team focus on finding ways to make every home feel fresh, from maximizing natural light to selecting combinations of finishes. Jaquet points out that each of the homes within a condo complex incorporates unique features that help it stand apart from the others. “And because they are all stepped back, each home is visually separate,” he adds. This creates a more interesting profile from the street,

and provides better views from inside the home as well. Wickstrom says Sage Creek has already turned into one of Winnipeg’s best communities. “Not only do you have all of the diversification you’d experience in much more established neighbourhoods, but you also have so many amenities nearby.” On the way home, or within walking distance through a network of attractive paths, residents have access to their own Sobeys, two banks, a dentist, and veterinarian, and that’s just the beginning. Even more conveniences will be added soon, including a Shoppers Drug Mart, liquor store, and a variety of new food outlets and restaurants for the community to enjoy. “It’s really one of the top developments,” adds Wickstrom. “You’ve got all of these great homes in a really fantastic location.” AUTUMN 2014 | STYLE MANITOBA | 75

homes and neighbourhoods

Visit Sage Creek and you’ll quickly get a sense of its distinct character. Architectural guidelines help keep that essence strong and cohesive throughout this stylish and thoughtfully planned neighbourhood. Qualico Communities also understands the value of personalization. “They challenge us to be innovative, so we’re always coming up with new design elements,” says Rob Wickstrom of Hearth Homes, who feels it’s also important to stay tuned in to how people will live in the properties they build. What do they need for their lifestyle? Which features are they going to use most? “It’s about creating balance,” he adds.

Let it Pop When you step into a showhome built by H. Albers Builders Ltd., you’re always going to see an impact item. Whether it’s as large as a staggered brick accent wall, or something as subtle as rounded, wood brackets, there’s always something to catch the eye. The company’s latest showhome in Sage Creek has those elements that pop. The 1,650-square-foot bungalow’s kitchen is a prime example. With almost a retro vibe, the high-gloss white cabinets, island, and tiled backsplash stand out against the dark granite countertops and walnut trim. But what really makes the mood unique are the two vertical red lights flanking the stovetop for a bright flash of colour, and pair perfectly with the crimson pendant lights. The kitchen opens up to the great room, boasting a large window, and custom built walnut cabinets. Ledges run like ribbons through the tiles surrounding the fireplace the same tiles are found on the exterior of the home, offering material continuity. Along with a large eating area, the main floor also hosts a laundry room with sink and

cabinetry, two bedrooms, and a master suite with a walk-in closet and ensuite. Here, one will find dual sinks, granite countertops, and a custom shower featuring a rain showerhead with slide bar.

H. Albers Builders Ltd.’s next showhome in Sage Creek, 48 Wild Iris Walk, will be open in spring 2015..

The finished lower level reveals an additional two bedrooms, wet bar with wine fridge, a games area, and a family room with a built-in entertainment centre. The lookout lot ensures

Rustic Modern Rustic meets modern is the idea behind Warkentin Custom Homes’ fall Parade of Homes offering in Countryside Crossing, the newest development in East St. Paul. The inviting front porch of 313 Saddleridge Lane is constructed from pine and pine timbers. Inside, the 1,917-square-foot bungalow boasts an east coast feel - soft ocean blues, light palettes, and large windows overlooking the development’s creek, giving the house a beach/ocean air. A two-sided fireplace inset in a stacked floor to ceiling stone wall features a rustic walnut barn board mantel, reminiscent of an old pier, and separates the warm great room from a four-season sunroom. The large, galley-style kitchen keeps working with woods boasting maple eco-wood cabinets, and oil-finished, wide-plank engineered oak floors. The main floor also houses a bedroom, laundry room with sink, a bathroom, and master bedroom with an ensuite featuring a freestanding tub set in front of large windows, and a ceramic tile shower with glass door.

The excitement continues at South Pointe. Located in Waverley West in the rapidly expanding and popular southwest sector of the city, the community has just seen the completion of its first phase. Now, the developer will move across Kenaston Blvd. to begin work on the next parcel in a second phase, a 640acre site where servicing will start this fall and new home construction will commence later next year.

Southern Satisfaction B y K elly G ray

“We have serviced 1400 lots since the conception of South Pointe,” says David Borger, Vice President of Land Development with Ladco, the company behind the plan. He reports that Phase I has been very successful. “We have sold 1200 of those 1400 lots, and sales expectations have been continually exceeded thanks to the demand, the location and the ability of our homebuilders to create a wide variety of wonderful home plans.” Realtor® Rob Hutchison agrees. Hutchison is with ReMax/ Performance Realty and sells A&S Homes in South Pointe. His opinion is that people are attracted by the buzz of residential living in southwest Winnipeg.

Indeed, South Pointe is a community with very mixed demographics where buyers can revel in the choices. There is a wide range available, says Hutchison, noting there is everything from 1200 square foot homes for first time buyers to million dollar properties with walkouts featuring gorgeous views. As a case in point, Hutchison mentions the

A&S Homes display properties in South Pointe where he is the onsite realtor working with buyers to maximize their new home opportunities. Currently he and agent Terry Gallinger are showing a 2001 square foot two-storey, a 1772 square foot bungalow, and a 2578 square foot two-storey walkout, all with fully finished lower levels. “All are first time builds for A&S Homes, and people that come

through remark on the quality and how the designs really fit their lifestyle. The same is true for South Pointe itself. The developer really did a great job with the details, like the paths and parks that were built in early so that now the area has more of a mature feel.” Certainly the future addition of a new Kindergarten to Grade 8 School is a leading element in the maturing of South Pointe. Earlier this year, Pembina Trails School Division announced plans for a new 86,000 square foot facility. They report the institution will open its doors for its first students in 2016. Sited on 8.8 acres, the school will be located at Tim Sale Drive and Waverley Street. When complete there will be facilities for music, sports and recreation, a science and technology classroom and a practical arts centre, in addition to 114 spaces for childcare and special need students. Location is another key driver in demand at South Pointe. In fact, the easy access afforded by the

community was a determining factor for Winnipeg Realtors® Ron and Vanessa Ledohowski who now call the neighbourhood home. “The fact it’s so close to U of M, restaurants, shopping and entertainment means South Pointe is a location that really fits our family’s lifestyle,” says Ron. “South Pointe is also situated in a lesser congested area of the south end. This means traffic is seldom a concern. I can easily hit the Perimeter or Bishop Grandin to skirt bad traffic and find myself quickly in other parts of the city,” he says. Here, David Borger concludes that it has been the full slate of attributes that have attracted residents who are from a wide range of ages, ethnic mixes and occupations. “This has created a fully blended community,” he says, pointing out that plans are to continue this winning formula as they ready the heavy equipment and trades for Phase II, and the continuation of the excitement that is South Pointe.

“When people come in and tour the area, they are blown away by the cohesiveness of South Pointe and the availability of top flight new homes,” he says.

By enriching the stairs with elemental materials in new unique ways, we’ve made the simple transitional space between floors a place to appreciate craftsmanship.”

She suggests that with Maric Homes, the whole is greater than the sum of its parts. “Our clients routinely tell us that they can’t quite put their finger on why they love our homes. To us, this is a sign of a truly successful design where we can create an entire living space without having to trumpet some gilded details – these are everywhere and inherent to the entire structure.”

At 171 Rue Hebert the display offers a perfect mix of versatility of Maric’s design principles. Located in the heart of the city in St Boniface, right next to Fort Gibraltar, this 2-storey takes a clever contemporary design and imbues it with modern, fresh touches in an urban family setting. Another example is at 25 East Plains in Sage Creek. Here, Maric has created a modern twist to their classic bungalow where there are details and finishing found nowhere else, mixed with a beautiful open layout. “Our team is there literally every step of the way, providing personal assistance through every major design decision,” she concludes, stating that from contract signing through turnkey, Maric Homes creates a homebuilding experience that is unique in the industry and allows clients to visualize and then realize their dreams.

“Whether it is the unmatched craftsmanship in our finishing millwork; ample storage that is functional and beautiful; flowing, seamless layouts that utilize space perfectly; or unique, varied materials and colour selections inside and out, attention to detail at every level separates a Maric home from a conventional builder,” says Caroline Maric of Maric Homes.

Indeed, it’s the details that make Maric a leader in new home construction. Consider their flagship 2-storey walkout at 100 Lake Bend Road in Bridgwater Lakes. This home is a complete statement of the Maric aesthetic - warm, rich materials anchoring a large, feature-laden layout with details that will astonish on every floor.

Dream Builder Pageantry Homes prides themselves on their custom approach to homebuilding. This means flexibility, professional advice that is highly personalized, and an overriding attention to detail. This approach has earned them the praise of hundreds of customers over the 30 years master builder Werner Krempin has been creating new home masterpieces. Today, Pageantry Homes is present in leading new housing developments such as Oakbank, Kingswood and Whistler Hollow, where they are building homes that range from 1500 to 2200 square feet. And, says Frances Krempin, Pageantry Homes is a family business working for families to create homes that really fit current needs. “The fact that we are a custom builder means you get the home you envision rather than settling for someone else’s dream. We have the experience to advise on designs to help new homebuyers maximize not just the value, but the opportunities to upgrade lifestyle,” she says, pointing to Whistler Hollow as a good case in point. “At Whistler Hollow, lots are 60 feet wide and we are able to discuss how homebuyers can really use this space to have

more room in the garage and contemporary interior layouts that work for families.” “Part of the process is working together,” says Frances. “Customers have told us our willingness to make design changes made all the difference to their level of satisfaction when they take the keys to their new home. We are so much more than just a construction

company. Our success has been in our ability to partner with our customers, where we work to conceptualize a dream and then turn it into reality.” For more information visit www. pageantryhomes.ca

Repeat customers - a sure sign of a good company. Pine Creek Homes have been “making dreams reality” with their custom homes for over three decades. And over the course of their 35 years, many people have come back for more fantasy fulfillment. “We have multiple repeat customers. Some start out with having us build their cottage, then they get us to do their house, then renovations on their house or cottage,” states Lori Veenstra, one fourth of the family-run company that also includes husband Jasper, and sons Glen and Josh. It’s Pine Creek Homes’ true custom approach to homebuilding that appeals to people. Since the company does their own design work, they’ve never created the same plan twice. “Everyone has different needs and each lot will also affect the design,” says Lori. “Customers are in full control of what they want from their house. Our job is to offer advice and use our expertise to make it happen.” That includes helping customers pick the right framing method. Pine Creek Homes is one of a handful of companies well versed in timber frame construction – a building method that’s been a signature style of the company. Pine

Creek Homes can also create a hybrid method (for example, a timber frame in the main living area, and conventional construction in the rest of the home), as well as a conventional build.

“People think we just do rustic timber frames, but we offer a wide range of styles, from rustic to contemporary to ultra modern. Whatever they want, we can create.”

Freedom Living That’s Completely Personalized Condo dwellers will tell you that when it comes to convenience, theirs is a lifestyle that just can’t be beat. You can say farewell to the lawnmower and kiss your rake, shovel and snowblower goodbye forever—it’s time for them to retire!

Pritchard Farm Southlands Village is a unique, 83-unit, bare-land condominium neighbourhood of custombuilt, freestanding luxury bungalows in East St. Paul. “The location is perfect for me,” says resident Christine Knoll. “It’s a lovely walkable neighbourhood with a tranquil rural feel, yet with easy access to downtown.” You don’t have to travel far to find a variety of shops, restaurants, medical and professional services. There are also parks, curling clubs, golf courses, a community centre, and Seniors’ Club nearby. It’s about a 15-minute drive to Bird’s Hill Park, Kildonan Park and Rainbow Stage. If shopping is your entertainment of choice, a number of malls and a range of shops and big-box stores are just minutes away on Lagimodiere and

On top of easy access to a wealth of conveniences, Gagne says one of the main reasons people choose this unique neighbourhood is the beauty and tranquility of the setting, combined with the opportunity to personalize their own home. “There are other house-style condos in the city, but the benefit here is that these aren’t all the same,” says Gagne. “It’s really a breath of fresh air.” Knoll agrees that the chance to put her personal stamp on her property was one of the main reasons she chose Pritchard Farm Southlands Village. “There was no other development like it,” she says. “Having the opportunity to work with a top Winnipeg builder to custom design a home that suited my needs and design style made the decision to move here an easy one.”

tasks like snow shovelling and lawn mowing, which means more time to enjoy life and less time spent on chores. So not only are homeowners free from having to do any outdoor yard work, they also know that their own home, and every other one in the village—will consistently be attractive and well-cared for. Gagne adds that residents also appreciate the extra security that their property management company provides. “Exterior lights are on timers. In the winter, driveways, sidewalks, and front steps are shovelled and free of ice. In the summer, lawns are watered and professionally mowed. Staying on top of these things makes it look

like you’re home, even when you’re not.” For snowbirds and cottage enthusiasts alike, that makes it easy to pick up and go, without the hassle of making plans to have someone else handle chores that will tip off thieves if left undone. This summer, residents found one more reason to love Pritchard Farm Southlands Village—a condo board. Made up of community members, this group gives residents an even greater say in how their neighbourhood continues to unfold. “It’s their community,” says Gagne. “This will give them the opportunity to get together and really make things happen.”

In a neighbourhood as unique as this one, the only thing common to every property actually makes the place more special, not less. That’s the professional landscape service that comes with each home. From individual properties to meticulously groomed shared spaces, all of Southlands Village is maintained by a professional property management company. That includes regular AUTUMN 2014 | STYLE MANITOBA | 87

Sometimes a name says it all. This is the case with Bluestem Condominiums in Sage Creek. The name suggests a connection to the nature of open prairie and grasslands, and the attraction of new style urban living. Toward this end, the developers of Sage Creek paid close attention to the details and attributes in this well planned community. Buyers of Bluestem Condos are the recipients of this desire for more nature in an urban neighbourhood, and more style in new home design. Created by StreetSide Developments, one of Western Canada’s most innovative condominium developers, Bluestem is a collection of townhomes located in close proximity to the Village Centre in the Sage Creek community, a neighbourhood located just off Lagimodiere in the southeast section of Winnipeg near the Mint. On offer is a selection of 75 townhome condominiums in nine buildings. Each building features a number of floor plans that are both unique and diverse, with two and three-bedroom layouts in living spaces that range from 1194 to 1552 square feet.

Currently Bluestem can showcase all four different and unique floor plans. They feature either a one or two-car attached garage, a charming front wood porch and sunny rear deck. “Whether you are looking for our largest plan with a chef ’s kitchen that boasts an amazing 12-foot kitchen island, or an affordable starter home with more room than an apartment – we’ve got you covered,” she says, commenting further that this collection of StreetSide townhomes are attainable from just $278,900, a number that includes GST and upgrades. Jess points out that people are attracted to residences such as

Bluestem for a wide range of reasons, making them high on buyers’ lists of preferred properties. “Bluestem offers a unique lifestyle that provides the comforts of a single family home such as a garage, private patios, spacious multi-level living, with the ease of maintenance and affordability of a condominium. No need to worry about landscaping or gutter cleaning – it’s all taken care of,” she says, noting that condo buyers tend to spend more time living and less time keeping up their homes. Realtor® George Matwichuk, who is marketing the properties alongside Glen MacAngus, says that buyers are attracted to aspects of

the community such as landscaping that features a rock garden in the dry creek bed where footbridges lead to walking paths. The Sage Creek Village Centre continues to grow, and is currently already home to two banks, a gas station, grocery store and Tim Hortons. People are first moved by the unique eye-catching three-storey townhouse design. Then they are wowed by what they find inside. “Buyers are able to choose their interior finishes or choose from finished suites styled by our in-house design consultant. Features include quartz countertops, wide plank laminate flooring, upgraded backsplash and stainless steel appliance packages,” he says, pointing out that they are seeing a lot of interest from buyers aged 21 to 50 years. “Many are young professionals, as well as couples and singles who are all attracted by a lifestyle free of property maintenance while still having all the advantages of a family home.” Matwichuk notes that Sage Creek is ideally situated with easy access to the U of M, cottage country, and the wealth of attractions at both St. Vital Centre and Regent Ave. “Bluestem Condos really have it all. From natural elements to urban amenities and great design, these homes offer a very complete package,” he says, inviting people to visit www.bluestemcondos.ca for more information.

ould you like to ADD much needed usable and gorgeous square footage to your home?

And since her company is somewhat of a “boutique,” Van Den Bussche and her project managers are very open to collaborating with their clients, and being flexible with their demands.

Remember when you were a kid and sometimes you were scared to go down into your basement because it was dark, cold, and concrete? Well, some adults are scared of their basements for those reasons as well. Lower levels don’t have to be “basements” but rather, an extension of your upstairs life. Michelle Van Den Bussche, owner of Rockwell Basement Finishing, had worked in the construction and renovation industry for over 15 years, and she noticed that lower levels were not getting the treatment they deserved. Whether it was just creating an unfinished concrete space, or adding multiple teleposts, people weren’t utilizing the area as a living space. So, she decided to start Rockwell Basement Finishing five years ago to help homeowners create a place they would use and love. “I wanted people to have a space that was just as beautiful as their main floor, and to use the area for what they wanted, whether it be as a secondary suite, or a custom entertaining

“Some customers will ask if they can buy their own bathroom fixtures, or buy their own trim, and I’m very open to that,” she says, adding that being a privately owned company really allows her to create the unique spaces that match her customers’ dreams.

area,” she says, adding they see many people wanting lower level media rooms with wireless sound systems, really pretty bathrooms with tile surround showers, and brighter colours than upper levels, which give the space some more light.

Whether a homeowner is dreaming of a ‘man/lady/ kid’ cave… or having to deal with unfortunate flood damage, Rockwell will offer creativity, fair pricing and professional project management, to ensure a beautiful finished basement.

When clients come to meet with Van Den Bussche, how they will use the space is one of the first questions she asks, while the second is the client’s budget. Firm quotes and firm pricing without surprises is a key element to her business, states Van Den Bussche. She also adds having clients feel comfortable with tradespeople in their homes is another priority for her. Each of her professionals, whether it be her plumber, carpenter or framer, are trade specific, very efficient and reliable, and enjoy building relationships with the clients they are working for. Hands-Free Heaven By Carly peters

Kohler has taken ‘hands-free’ to a higher level with their new line of Sensate™ faucets. In fact, so good is this new plumbing product that it’s like having a third hand in the kitchen. Remember those first generation airport or movie theatre hands-free faucets that had you wringing your hands in frustration with their no-flow challenges? Kohler has done their homework and those days are done. With Sensate™, hands-free faucets are reliable, thanks to direct wiring to home current rather than batteries. Kohler has also perfected the sensor, making these faucets the state-of-the-art when it comes to hands off operation. The Sensate™ faucet is a true hands-free device that is hard wired for dependability. Just place a hand or dish under the state-of-theart sensor and water gushes in just 20 milliseconds. “When you are busy in the kitchen or need to quickly clean your hands, you do not need a hands-free faucet that is slow or clumsy,” says Robinson Kitchen & Bath Showroom Manager Astrid Bergstrom. “The sensor is fast at 20 milliseconds and it works consistently when you place a hand

or dish underneath. This means easier hygiene and more effortless kitchen work,” she says, adding that Sensate™ products also feature a magnetic dock to get the spray nozzle back into place easily without pushing or positioning. And for those who don’t want to use the hands-free feature, faucets come with a manual valve to allow for more traditional operation. Kohler Sensate™ faucets look good, too. Available in either chrome or stainless steel, these plumbing products offer cutting edge design that is tailored to meet the needs of the most demanding kitchen plans. According to Bergstrom, Kohler products are manufactured in the US and come standard with a high level of quality built in. As such, Kohler has been able to offer a lifetime warranty that has made them a faucet plumbers as well as home and business owners look to first for durability, dependability and performance over the long haul. Kitchen&Bath Creating Conversation

Creative Granite Works has been creating custom quartz and granite conversation pieces for five years. Whether it’s a patio table or vanity, each vein speaks something a little different to each customer. “We are a smaller company so we can be much more customer oriented and focus on high quality and customization,” explains Dennis Konrad, owner. Creative Granite Works offers free, in-home consultations where an estimator will sit down with clients, determine what they envision their granite or quartz piece to look like, and its applications. Once customers have determined what they’d like, they are able to view the large slabs in person. “You really get a better idea of the colour, and can see how the grain in the granite flows with these samples, which can be up to 50 or 60 square feet,” states Konrad, adding they offer over four lines of quartz, and 400 different colours of granite. “We offer a very wide field of colours and patterns. Most people are looking for contrast to the cabinets, flooring, or tiles it will be against. Usually if these items are darker, you’ll want a lighter granite, and visa versa.” Konrad loves the unique look of each slab. “There’s going to be a unique element in each portion. So when you create a countertop or a tabletop, you’re making a conversation piece.”

Kitchen&Bath Partners in Design

Kitchen Craft and RS Capital Developments have been working together on the company’s adult living development, Riverbend Estates in St. Adolphe, just south of the Perimeter. The 25 single bungalow condos feature two bedrooms, two bathrooms, a four-season sun-room, and of course, a spacious kitchen. The open concept kitchen offers staple items such as maple cabinets, and laminate countertops, but can be upgraded depending on the homeowner’s taste. Andy Schultz, Kitchen Craft designer on the project, states an upgraded kitchen could include columns versus standard brackets, granite countertops, and hardwood, full extension drawers. “There’s also various appliance packages if condo owners want to move up to stainless steel,” he says. Laura Stuart of Sutton Group-Kilkenny Real Estate, the realtor on the project, also has a hand in the interior designing of the condos, working with homeowners to create their kitchen package - from colours to countertops. She states more than half of the units feature upgraded elements such as soft close drawers, and bevelled edges, as well as elevated elements suggested by Kitchen Craft. “We have been working with Kitchen Craft for three years, and it’s been a great experience,” states Stuart, adding RS Capital Developments will be partnering with the custom kitchen designers again on their newest venture, Waterside Estates in Transcona, which will likely be available for possession in spring 2015.

Cutting Edge

When dealing with some of the finest hard surfaces in the world, such as marble, you want to ensure you’re working with a company that excels in precision. How about precision down to 1/16th of an inch? Family-owned, Winnipeg-based Western Marble, Granite & Tile (WMGT) is the most technologically advanced granite and marble sales, fabrication, and installation company in Western Canada. The company is the only stone fabricator in Manitoba to boast a wet saw that converts to water jet technology. The pen-hole size stream produces enough psi to cut through hard materials, and is capable of producing extremely intricate cuts. WMGT also utilizes laser templates and a specialized slab program that takes precision to an unmatched level that hand manufacturing could never come close to. For example, the exotic granite pictured here, named Nacarado, features numerous veins that if not mapped, cut and installed correctly would look disjointed. WGMT utilizes a state-ofthe-art digital optics system that will ensure veins are cut to within1/16th of an inch, explains Jeremy Mathison, president. Strongly committed to the environment, WMGT reuses 90 percent of their water, as well as donating all scrap or unusable material to Habitat for Humanity, or to customers to use in their gardens or pathways. WMGT’s cutting edge work can be seen in 70 to 80 percent of this year’s fall Parade of Homes. AUTUMN 2014 | STYLE MANITOBA | 99

Find Your Fix

By Carly peters

Photography: Michael Roberts

Who doesn’t enjoy a 30-minute, quick fix renovation show where a horribly dated bathroom gets an amazing overhaul in between commercials? Reality TV at its finest, but not reality when it comes to real life renovations. “Even with the right crew and the right product, renovations never go how they are portrayed in TV shows,” explains Derek Turland, specialty sales at The Floor Show. No one knows this better than Katie Hepworth, a client of Turland’s who had big ideas for her very dated bedroom and ensuite in Boissevain. Having picked her carpet, the installer came, and once the posh, plush surface was laid down, everyone realized there was a visible manufacture’s flaw. Turland quickly ordered Hepworth a new roll of Bond Street wool carpet by Stanton, which was delivered and installed within a couple weeks - a time frame that is quick for carpet claim replacements. For the ensuite bathroom, Hepworth had decided to go completely luxe - marble shower, marble thresholds, and TFS Private Line tile. She set her sights on utilizing all Bianco Venatino, a light marble tile for the shower. Turland suggested some contrast to her original idea- “How about adding Driftwood, a brownishgray tile to complement your vanity and millwork?” he suggested. She accepted. A few other minor snags related to other contractors and Katie was frustrated, but not discouraged, and continued to pursue her dream space with the help of Turland and his team. “Managing your expectations can help with the renovation process,” explains Turland. Before they start any renovation work, they ensure clients understand that what they want might not align with their budget or lifestyle. They then work to achieve a plausible project that still meets customer’s desires. He adds that once people are in the thick of the project, sometimes tensions can run high. “The longer the job, the lower the tolerance,” states Turland. “Life will be turned upside down for a bit. You may have to retire to your bedroom at night on plywood if the flooring is not complete. You may have to compromise - the sample you loved may be unavailable in the timeframe you need, so you’ll have to find another.” His suggestion is to keep communication open, and be prepared for those little blips. And, then just like on the TV shows, you’ll be happy in the end. AUTUMN 2014 | STYLE MANITOBA | 101

Use Your Illusion By Carly Peters

“Love walking through your front door.” This is the philosophy that Interior Illusions promotes through their product offerings, and their fashion-forward, knowledgeable team of design and decor professionals. Whether it’s an accent chair, or large sectional, one of the store’s most popular brands, Weiman, is committed to innovative shapes and bold colour options, making each piece diverse and comfortable. The contemporary Jonathan chair has hints of retro cool with its large base, cushion buttons,

boxy shape, and wooden legs. While it appears in solid gray here, customers can choose from multiple colours and patterns, and can even create a two-tone piece with the back in one hue and the cushion in another. This wide colour range extends to the company’s sectional offerings as well. The Milano sectional can be customized in various tones and textures. Magda Zelickson, co-owner of the Exchange District-based store, states they are seeing more customers selecting cloth over leather upholstery. There is more of a trend towards cloth fabric, and adding leather either as an accent chair, or as an ottoman,” she says. Zelickson notes that customers tend to pick neutrals, such as gray, beige, brown, and black as their base, and add pops of colour with toss cushions and chairs. “Red is always a timeless accent colour. But this fall, teals and blues are very popular.”

a soft, medium or firm sit, each seat can be created to meet the customer’s needs. The Montgomery sectional offers a unique feature to ensure those cushions stay full, and don’t need to be fluffed. A small piece of fabric-covered wood is slotted behind each pillow to ensure it doesn’t sag, and gives extra support while adding a great design detail. Need a little help figuring out what might work for you? Interior Illusions offers a full range of in-store and in-home services to help clients create their own unique space with ease.

The Lap of Luxury

design&decor

B y C arly P eters Even though you tread on it all day long, flooring can be one of the most luxurious elements in the home. From high-grade carpets to oil-rubbed woods, throwing down just any old thing is a thing of the past. Flooring manufacturer, Beaulieu Canada, is one of the largest manufacturers and distributors of wall-to-wall carpet in Canada. The company’s commercial grade fibre, Nylon 66, the toughest product available, is ideal for residential applications in high-traffic areas such as children’s rooms. With numerous colours and patterns, each line is practical and efficient without being boring. But the flooring product that’s taking every room by storm is luxury vinyl plank (LVP), which is fairly new to the Canadian manufacturer. “LVP is the way the industry is going,” states Tim Pariseau, Operations Manager for Curtis Carpets. “There used to be only one or two lines before that offered LVP, but now most manufacturers are offering a line.” So why is LVP pushing real hardwood off the floor? Visually speaking, it looks exactly the same. Made to look like all the different species of hardwood, each plank is embossed with a grain, comes in the same hand-scraped, or wire-brushed style, and in a variety of “stains.”

Where it outperforms hardwood is in its functionality. Pariseau likes to say “wood and water don’t mix,” but with LVP water damage is not an issue, making it an ideal solution for kitchens, dining areas, and even bathrooms. And unlike wood, it’s dent and scratch resistant. LVP is also an easy install. While it can be glued down, most manufacturers offer a glue-less floating method where panels can just be clicked into place. This not only means if a plank gets dam-

aged, it can be easily removed and replaced, but it also allows for easy removal if a new design is desired. For those who really want the real thing, oil-rubbed hardwoods are the ideal solution. Natural oil finish helps harden the wood fibres without altering their look. This also ensures the floor won’t need to be sanded once it’s lost luster - just another coat of maintenance oil brings the wood back to life and luxury.

Living the Dream

Sleep is the key to a better life in the waking hours. But many people struggle to get a good night’s rest, and most of the time, it has to do with their own bed. Dufresne’s Dream Experience department is all about giving customers a better night’s sleep through a detailed analysis of their sleeping positions, needs, and issues.

shopping environment,” states Keyur Pathak, Retail Manager, Dream Experience. “We focus on all aspects of a good night’s sleep and offer all the essentials to a sleep system, which are the mattress/base, pillow, and mattress protector. We personalize all of them to our guests based on the diagnostic results from the Dream Experience sleep assessment.”

Additionally, 30 percent of our sleep comes from pillows. People are different sizes and sleep in different positions; the right pillow should provide the necessary support we need. Dream Experts use their training and expertise in finding the right pillow for our guests from the latest and newest technology pillows from major retailers.

The journey at the Dream Experience starts the minute guests are greeted by a certified Dream Expert at the store. Dufresne Dream Experts are handpicked and go through extensive training in order to meet Dufresne’s standards for certification. They use sleep science and education to ensure guests get a good night’s sleep for a healthier life. Then guests are given a free personalized sleep assessment that uses pressure-mapping technology where they find out what type of sleep set they should ideally be using.

Finding the right mattress is extremely important as we spend almost a third of our life in bed. Every year bedding manufacturers release new innovative solutions for a better night’s sleep and the Dream Experts compile the best selection for their guests.

The third essential is a mattress protector. Customers should want their bed to be dust, insects and bacteria proof, and that’s why having the right mattress protector is vital. It not only keeps the mattress healthy, but also prolongs the life and helps deliver better performance from the mattress.

“Our customers are broad in age, but share the same problems. They struggle with comfort, sleep, health issues, and may not be sure why. Our customers seek value and knowledge but need our help to make smarter decisions in a comfortable, less stressful, and friendly

“The feedback we have received from all of our 11 Dufresne Dream Experience departments is very encouraging. We hear and see more stories from happy customers who have bought sleep sets from our Dream Experts. We look forward to continue helping our guests have the best sleep of their life.”

Beauty can be found in all facets of nature, and fall lighting and design trends are bringing those elements inside the home. The fixture featured here, which is manufactured by Kichler Lighting, illustrates how current design is utilizing materials and shapes from the natural environment. Available in three sizes, Organique is reminiscent of a bird’s nest shape in a unique manner using metal instead of twigs. “Many fixtures currently are inspired from what we see in nature,” explains Alison Demaré BID, Branch Manager for Robinson Lighting Ltd, adding this piece also falls under the uber chic rustic meets modern trend. Robinson Lighting has a selection of fixtures in this current trend, many of which utilize clear glass in a variety of shapes and sizes. Both brushed nickel and oil rubbed bronze finishes are still popular, but the new trend is matte gold or antique brass, which can create a warm glow for any space. “We have a wide selection of styles available in our showroom and many more options that can be special ordered from our wide selection of manufacturers,” she adds. “Our educated Lighting Specialists can assist homeowners with all their lighting needs.”

design&decor Authentic Flame

Fireplaces have become more than a functional element of the home; they’ve become a focal point. Modern designs, contemporary materials, and innovative flame options draw people in, and Classic Fireplaces offers the latest in both current and continuing trends. The wall mounted electric fireplace is not a new trend, but Dimplex is offering it with a flame twist. The brand’s Opti-myst uses a revolutionary ultrasonic technology to create the effect of flame and smoke. As the mist rises up through the rocks, the light reflects against the water molecules creating the illusion of a 3D fire. And since there is no real flame or heat emission, the glass front stays cool to the touch, making it a safe option for the home. Yet, the 4,777 BTU electric fireplace throws enough heat to add warmth to any 400-squarefoot room that’s dispersed by a whisper quiet fan heater. Shown here is the Brayden, a European designed wall-mount fireplace that features a glossy black and grey finish that could stand out with contemporary décor or blend in casually to a more traditional environment. Contemporary styling is still on trend this fall with the continuing offering of linear designs in both gas and electric. These, along with The Brayden, and other in-home and outdoor fireplaces can be seen in Classic Fireplaces’ showroom this fall.

Riccardo Mandarano of Contessa Home Decor / Contessa Fine Furniture states this Canadian-made line is created from solid birch which allows users to see the beautiful grain, and appreciate the rich tone of the wood. Customers will also appreciate the fact they can customize each piece to their needs. The table, which is featured here with a double pedestal base, comes with varied leg styles and sizes, and can also feature different hues of stains. The chairs can either complement or contrast the table, and for a bit of definition, the fabric on the seat and back of the chair can feature one colour, while the outside back panel can feature another. And since the dining set is under the Heritage Collection, Dine Art has brought back the classic credenza, which can also be highly customized - whether you prefer glass doors to solid wood fronts, drawers instead of doors, and even the style of handles. Available in various sizes, the solid wood credenza features soft close drawers, and if it has glass panels, a unique touch dimmer switch on the door handles. 112 | STYLE MANITOBA | AUTUMN 2014
