THE KEYWORKERS CARING FOR ROCHDALE'S ANIMALS Throughout the coronavirus crisis, the dedicated staff at Rochdale RSPCA have been working around the clock to keep their furry and feathery residents safe. The team have been out rescuing abused, injured and neglected animals and are helping to rehabilitate and rehome them. The team recently found this female hedgehog very dehydrated and out wandering during the day. She was checked over by a vet and given plenty of fluids before being released back into the wild.
ROCHDALE ROADS PAINTED TO SAY THANK YOU Roads in Rochdale have been painted with messages to thank our key workers. The markings are at Whitehall Street at the approach to Rochdale Infirmary and outside Birch Hill Hospital. Councillor Neil Emmott, cabinet member for environment at Rochdale Borough Council, said: “The efforts of our key workers during this awful pandemic have been super human. From medical staff to care workers, social workers, waste operatives and many more, they have all worked incredibly hard in an unprecedented situation. We hope this gesture of thanks highlights how much we value their extraordinary efforts and helps to put a smile on their face.”
The centre have seen an influx of wildlife including sick and injured hedgehogs, foxes, ducks, birds and even a bat! Any donations would be gratefully received and would help ensure Rochdale RSPCA can continue its incredible work. LOCKDOWN'S UNEXPECTED UPSIDES Hopwood Hall College has announced three inspiring winners of its community-wide competition to uncover the ‘unexpected upsides’ of lockdown, as people celebrated finding the silver lining of an otherwise challenging time.
The Under 12s prize went to 7-year-old Zachary Grimshaw, who has been learning to play the piano after a neighbour gifted it to his family in March. In the 12-18 Years category, budding 14 year old poet Esther Boyede took the top spot after composing a powerful multiverse poem called Optimism. Finally, Rochdale mum-of-two Amy Perkin came first in the Aged 19+ category. The NHS key worker designed a rainbow-coloured mosaic featuring the handprints of her family. Congratulations to the winners who each won a new Chromebook or Amazon Fire Kids Edition Tablet.
