Excitement is building for the highly anticipated 'Shrek The Musical', as Rochdale Musical Theatre Company (RMTC) bring this hilarious, heart-warming, larger than life production to Rochdale Town Centre this spring!

The company are set to transform the iconic Champness Hall into their fairytale swamp for nine unforgettable performances, from 9th-17th May 2025.

Based on the Oscar-winning Dreamworks film, Shrek The Musical is a whirlwind fairytale adventure, bringing all the beloved characters you know from the film to life on stage, with a talented cast, spectacular costumes, fantastic puppets and a live orchestra.

Follow Shrek and Donkey on their daring quest to rescue the feisty Princess Fiona. Meet a soul singing Dragon, a Gingerbread man with attitude, Pinocchio and a whole bunch of fairytale misfits, in this family friendly show, for all generations to enjoy.

Below: The cast and creative team of Shrek The Musical

Founded in 1898, the society are in their 127th year of bringing musical theatre to Rochdale.

The company's 2025 production follows their hugely popular, sell-out runs of Grease and Beauty and the Beast. With over 1700 tickets already sold for Shrek The Musical, the society look to be heading for another highly successful run.

Talented local performer, Gareth Baddeley, explains why taking on the role of Shrek is his dream come true:

"I think I know Shrek the movie like the back of my hand. I always loved how the story subverted the fairytale structure and sought to champion people’s diversities and differences. To be able to play Shrek is an absolute dream, so much fun bringing such a massively recognisable character to life on stage! You must only miss this show IF you are allergic to smiling! Come join us in the swamp!!"

Directed by Seb Lassandro, with musical direction by Chris Addington and choreography by Nikki Cooke of Legacy Dance Academy, the production will truly showcase the incredible talent we have locally.

Director, Seb Lassandro, commented:

"After bringing a sprinkle of Disney magic last year to Rochdale with the spectacular 'Beauty and the Beast', we’re looking forward to bringing all the fun of the fairytales to Champness with 'Shrek'!

"It’s big, it’s green and it’s a great fun show full of upbeat songs, ridiculous characters and a talking donkey… What’s not to love!

"A fantastic cast, lead by four incredible principals, will lead us through the woods to Duloc on a colourful adventure of derring-do! It’s a show absolutely not to be missed."

Tickets are selling fast for this spectacular production!

WIN TICKETS TO SHREK!

We're inviting children of all ages to draw/create a picture of their favourite fairytale character!

Please scan or take a picture of the finished artwork and email it to our editor ruth@rochdalestyle.com along with the child's first name and age.

Rochdale's Will Lady extends her invaluable advice to the nation in ITV's 'Tonight' appearance

For the past four years, Fiona Daly, has been on a mission to simplify the process of making a Will and Lasting Powers of Attorney (LPA), ensuring that more people in Rochdale have these important legal documents in place to protect their family's future.

In a recent appearance on ITV's 'Tonight' programme, Fiona extended this advice to the nation, challenging misconceptions about LPA's and giving people across the country the knowledge to protect themselves and their loved ones.

Choose your Attorneys

carefully - Appoint more than one Attorney - two Attorneys at least, so they can share the responsibility. Do the people you've chosen share your views and do you trust them to carry out your wishes? Have a conversation with them about how you expect them to make decisions in different circumstances. For example, are you happy for your property to be rented to help pay for your care costs?

Restrict the level of power given to your AttorneysProvide legally binding instructions setting out what an Attorney must do or not do. You should also think carefully about how you want your Attorneys to make decisions (either together or together and on their own).

Incase you missed Fiona's television debut, she has shared her top tips for making an LPA...

Understand the purpose of an LPA - An LPA is a legal document that allows you to choose who will be your voice and have the practical powers to make decisions for you if you can't due to injury or illness (say, dementia). Each person named on the document is called an Attorney. An LPA for Property & Finances allows an Attorney to look after your bank accounts, bills, pension, property etc, whilst an LPA for Health & Welfare allows an Attorney to deal with medical and social care professionals about your medical treatment/care and choose a suitable care home if needed.

Plan early - While you have mental capacity, it’s vital that you get your affairs in order and choose the best people to manage your affairs. You can’t appoint an Attorney once you lose capacity in an accident or through illness.

Keep your LPA updated - If your circumstances change, your choice of Attorney may change, such as following a marriage or divorce, when children reach adulthood or if parents pass away.

Don’t DIY it and get it wrong - Use a reputable solicitor or will writer to prepare your LPA. A solicitor or will writer will explain the documents, discuss in detail how the documents will work in practice, talk about which Attorneys to appoint and their suitability to be appointed.

Finally, as Fiona explained to ITV Tonight viewers:

"The main misconception people have about Lasting Powers of Attorney is, "I'm next of kin, I'm husband or wife to the person who has lost mental capacity, so of course I can make decisions for them, of course I can manage their utility bills. Unfortunately, that's totally untrue. And the only way that they can manage the affairs and finances of the spouse or next of kin is having in place an LPA."

With over 150 five star Google reviews, Fiona guarantees a friendly, reliable, professional service, in the comfort of your own home, at a time to suit you. If you’d like a chat with Fiona about Wills or Lasting Powers of Attorney please call 07799 213 721.

GOOGLE 5 STAR CLIENT REVIEW...

"Fiona dealt with all our wishes expertly and professionally. She was friendly and down to earth, explaining all aspects of the Will / Power of Attorney in simple layman's terms so we knew exactly what was what! We would highly recommend Fiona to anyone in the process of making A Will or Power of Attorney."

BEAM WITH CONFIDENCE!

LOOSE, FAILING OR MISSING TEETH?

DON'T LIKE DENTURES?

DR ANDREW PARASHCHAK PROVIDES A STEP BY STEP GUIDE TO DENTAL IMPLANTS...

WHAT IS A DENTAL IMPLANT?

A dental implant is the most tooth like replacement for a missing tooth. They can be used to replace a single tooth or multiple teeth. The titanium implant is a bit like a screw and is surgically placed in the jawbone, replacing the tooth root, and is attached to a dental crown, bridge or denture depending on your individual needs.

WHO CAN HAVE DENTAL IMPLANTS?

Anyone over the age of 18 is eligible for dental implant treatment to restore their smile, provided they are in good general and dental health and have adequate remaining jawbone. Even where bone loss has occurred we have procedures which can help rebuild it. There is no upper age limit for dental implant treatment. In-fact, in patients struggling to eat and speak with loose conventional dentures, implant solutions are life changing.

WHAT IS THE TYPICAL PROCESS FOR IMPLANT TREATMENT?

Initially a consultation visit is made where you can discuss your needs and perform a detailed examination of your mouth. We would also take any X rays or other records at this stage. Following a 3D Xray (CBCT scan) taken in house, we would proceed to the surgery.

After a healing period of approximately 3 months, your implant(s) will be restored with a crown, bridge or denture. Treatment is usually completed in around 4 and 12 months depending on complexity.

HOW LONG WILL AN IMPLANT LAST?

You can expect your dental implant solution to survive up to 25 years depending on maintenance of excellent oral hygiene regime, good general health and regular review with your dentist and hygienist. Implants, like teeth need to be maintained, as they can be susceptible to gum disease.

Get a spring in your step with these child-friendly (and by that I mean relatively short!) reservoir walks. We have some lovely patches of water to wander around in the Rochdale Borough, and as the weather gets warmer and nature starts awakening this is the perfect time to go exploring with your little adventurers…

HOLLINGWORTH LAKE

• Pay and display car parks off Rakewood Road (OL15 0AQ), Hollingworth Road (OL15 0AZ) and Lake Bank (OL15 0DQ)

• Pram friendly

• Places to eat

• Toilets

Probably the most child friendly of the local reservoirs (yes it’s actually a reservoir and not a natural lake) is Hollingworth Lake. This is because, in addition to a 2 mile circular path which is nice and flat, you will find a couple of playgrounds, numerous eateries and even an amusement arcade. For the more adventurous amongst us it is also the home of Hollingworth Lake Water Activity Centre, where you can hire paddleboards, try windsurfing or just go for a sail on a boat.

WATERGROVE RESERVOIR

• Free car park at the top of Ramsden Road (OL12 9NJ)

• Not one for wheels

• Places to picnic, but no cafe

• No toilets

The paths around Watergrove are a little harder to navigate, with some hills, cobbles, steps and bridges, but that just makes the walk more fun! There is a 2.5 mile route around the reservoir, but you will also find additional paths where you can discover ruins and spot deer. It is such a peaceful setting, the views are glorious and there are opportunities to get close to the shoreline and skim stones.

GREENBOOTH RESERVOIR

• The official car park is on Forsyth Lane (OL12 7TL), but it's a narrow track to get there and the car park can get crowded so you could park in Norden village itself, grab a bite to eat at The Bridge Chippy or Catherine's Cafe and walk to the reservoir. Please be mindful of residents when parking.

• Some segments are pram-friendly, but not all

• No toilets or cafe (but lovely places in Norden village)

For a longer walk why not try visiting Greenbooth? This site is actually made up of four separate reservoirs - Greenbooth itself, but also Naden Lower, Naden Middle and Naden Higher. There are various ways you can meander around these reservoirs, some which are pram friendly, but some which are not so much. You will get some spectacular views over to Manchester and of the giant wind turbines, and could even come across a waterfall cascading into Fordoe Brook.

COWM RESERVOIR

• Car park outside the Water Ski Academy on Back Cowm Lane (OL12 8BE)

• Pram friendly

• Sometimes a pop-up drink outlet

• No toilets

This is a lovely circular trail of just over 1 mile, which traces the banks of the water. On the water there are obviously lots of ducks and geese to spot, but you will also often see a jet ski speeding along! In addition, there are lovely views over to Brown Wardle hill and up to the quarries.

A little further afield there are some equally as lovely reservoirs to discover…

BAITINGS RESERVOIR

• Heading towards Ripponden on the A58 Halifax Road there is a small car park just after the reservoir on the right (HX6 4LR)

• Pram friendly

• No toilets, but sometimes an ice cream van.

This remains a firm favourite of ours, and not only because it is only 1.5 miles long! The path is smooth, goes through some woodland and crosses a very impressive dam, with lovely views of the Ryburn Valley (where there is another reservoir you could explore if you’re feeling adventurous).

SCAMMONDEN WATER

• There are a choice of car parks, including a large one on Low Platt Lane (HD3 3FR) and a smaller one on New Lane

• I have taken a pram around, but it was a bit of a work-out!

• No café or toilets, but sometimes an ice cream van

The route around Scammonden Water is about 4 miles long, but the kids can be kept entertained by discovering sculptures along the way and doing some serious truck spotting on the M62 (which you walk right past). Do not be put off by the proximity of the motorway, it is still a very peaceful and pretty place, but the walk does involve some hills, so is possibly not for the youngest of explorers.

(continued...)

WITHENS CLOUGH RESERVOIR

• There is a small free car park at the top of Rudd Lane, on Withens New Road (HX7 5TD)

• Not one for prams

• No facilities

For what feels like a walk in the wilderness why not try Withens Clough? This involves a 1.5 mile route close to the water’s edge, where you can often find a “beach” and definitely throw some stones. The paths are mostly not surfaced, but that simply adds to the wilderness feel, as does the extensive view over the moorland and up towards the Stoodley Pike monument (which you can also walk up to if you’re feeling energetic!).

SUPPORT THE DALE

Did you know that Rochdale AFC have reached the final four of the Isuzu FA Trophy and are now only one win away from their first ever Wembley cup final?!

Dale will host Spennymoor Town at the Crown Oil Arena on Saturday 5th April, with kick-off at 3pm.

Ticket prices have been reduced for this very important game, so this really is your chance to get behind the team and support our town! Adult tickets will be £12, seniors £8, tickets for those under 21 will cost £5 and for those under 14 just £3! Tickets are on sale now via the club’s website (www.rochdaleafc.co.uk), over the phone (01706 644648) or at the ticket office (Sandy Lane, OL11 5DR).

So… get yourself and your kids down to the Crown Oil Arena, treat yourselves to a pie or a hot dog, give Desmond Dragon a high five and get your cheering voices turned up loud!

UP THE DALE!

PENNINGTON FLASH

• There is a pay and display car park at WN7 3PA

• Wheel friendly

• The Hide Coffee House offers food and fabulous milkshakes

• Toilets

Another patch of water we sometimes walk round is Pennington Flash… well I say "round", but you don’t actually go all the way round the lake but instead meander around the nature reserve, finding different paths and peeking into bird hides. You can also get up onto the tow path for Leeds and Liverpool canal, which can extend your walk nicely. By the car park is a fabulous playground with a nature theme - clamber across the reeds, climb up into the tree house and rock upon a swan!

Rochdale is the latest town to be awarded the title since 2020, following Bury, Stalybridge, Stockport and most recently Bolton, with all four using the award to raise their profile and celebrate the breadth and diversity of their cultural offer.

In addition to the title, Rochdale receives a £50,000 grant from the GMCA Culture Fund to develop a programme of cultural events and activities building on the town’s rich cultural history and international reputation as the home of the co-operative movement with more than 35 arts organisations bringing together an ambitious programme of festivals, exhibitions, events and performances.

Showcasing the very best local talent, Rochdale’s year is promising to put ‘people power’ centre stage, with residents helping to plan, develop and deliver a line-up of creative activity alongside a number of major events including the popular free days out for families - the Feel Good Family Picnic, an exciting new urban arts festival, the Street Eat food and drink festival, The Herds - life-sized animal puppets taking over the streets of Heywood, an new work of art by world renowned Shilpa Gupta as part of Manchester International Festival, Ignite Fire Festival, live music, a new people’s gallery, the Merhaba Halal food festival, Pride parade and many more to be revealed. A Poet Laureate and Young Poet Laureate will be commissioned to capture the spirit of Rochdale and celebrate the year.

"Rochdale is a place with a rich cultural history, so it is great to name it Greater Manchester’s town of culture as it’s town hall and town centre enter a new era. Rochdale submitted a fantastic bid for this which was incredibly exciting and ambitious while being firmly rooted in its local talent and deep history. We are definitely going to see the very best of what Rochdale has to offer over the next 12 months and people will come from far and wide to see it."

Councillor Neil Emmott, leader of Rochdale Borough Council said:

"I’m thrilled Rochdale will be Town of Culture for 2025/2026. We’ll be drawing audiences from across Greater Manchester and beyond to enjoy a fabulous programme of new events and activities as well as amplifying our existing offer and recently transformed town hall square and centre. We have an amazing community spirit here, with exciting and varied attractions and an array of local talent to help us produce something very special. We’re well connected and have iconic cultural venues that will provide a stunning backdrop to the wonderful year ahead."

One of the first exhibitions is the Town of Culture Outdoor Gallery featuring around 18 artists - over a 70m stretch of site hoarding on Drake Street.

Further details about Rochdale’s year will be announced in the coming weeks. Keep up to date and find out more at rochdalecreates.co.uk and rochdale.gov.uk/YourEvents and follow @rochdale.creates on Instagram.

Mayor of Greater Manchester, Andy Burnham said:

Graham Marshall Vice-Chairman of Rochdale Music Society tells me that the 2025 Spring Series continues with a concert by the A4 BRASS QUARTET on Saturday, 12 April. Music to be played ranges from 'Bach to Bales'.

On 16 May singers and musicians from the PORTRAIT PLAYERS will be performing music for 'Ye Gentle Spirits', another journey across the ages.

The final concert of the Series will be on 21 June, when music for cello and piano of a suitably midsummer’s day romantic warmth will be played by Sveta and Slava, two musicians of international acclaim who have chosen to make their home in Rochdale.

Further details are to be found on the society’s website: rochdalemusicsociety.org

THE POWER OF CREATIVITY!

The value of the creative arts in maintaining and improving mental health and wellbeing is upliftingly demonstrated in the recently released short film The Power of Creativity – The Vibe Legacy.

Young people with their artist facilitators, supporters and friends attended the premiere in Vicolo Del Vino on Butts Avenue in Rochdale Town Centre to watch this inspirational, moving, funny and celebratory film of the wonderful achievements of young people facing mental health challenges.

The decade-long Vibe Project was funded initially by Heywood, Middleton and Rochdale NHS CCG then GM NHS Integrated Care Partnership as a socially prescribed project with a difference.

The Vibe model being very different to many interventions and courses available to young people facing mental health challenges with no time limits: some young people were with the project for 8 years.

This gave them the security of belonging, the time and space to develop friendships, grow feelings of self-worth, find and express their voice, develop skills and the confidence to communicate their story in their own way with whom they chose through the creative arts.

An environment in which they could start to believe that they had something to offer to themselves and others, becoming valuable contributors to their communities ready to successfully engage with training, employment and volunteering.

The artists including musicians, filmmakers, poets, DJs, visual artists, photographers and digital artists inspired, supported and enabled young people to find their voice through the creative arts and to express and share their stories through whatever medium worked for them.

A full report of the Vibe Project including many images and links to videos and music made by young people can be read at: allacrossthearts.com.

The film [approx. 23 minutes] can be found on YouTube by searching for "The Power of Creativity - The Legacy of VIBE" and is narrated by Rochdale actress, Coronation Street's Sue Devaney.

Chair, Ray Stearn, explains: "We have kindly been taken in by Rochdale Central Library, where we meet once a month as Number One Writers, inspired by the building being Number One Riverside and in no way reflecting any feeling of superiority!

"May 31st should see some of us performing our work as part of the Lancashire Heritage Day at Rochdale Town Hall.

"We always welcome new members and have a variety of facilitators so we hope we provide something for everyone. Come and join us on the first Thursday of the month 2-4pm, bring along pen and paper and plenty of ideas!"

Manchester International Festival spreads its wings with events in Rochdale

SHILPA GUPTA

4 - 20 July

A thought-provoking sound installation at Rise Innovate (R-Kix) in Rochdale town centre will share stories from local communities, collected and connected by Mumbai-based artist Shilpa Gupta.

Created in partnership with Rochdale Development Agency, the sound installation uses a series of singing microphones to immerse audiences in different perspectives in this moving work of art about waiting, persistence and hope.

Shilpa Gupta said: "The sound installation merges text and sculpture in a dynamic, choreographed composition. Suspended microphones, each counterbalanced by a dimly lit light fixture, move fluidly through the darkened gallery, weaving between visitors. Subverting their usual function, these microphones - now transformed into speakers - emit spoken words that traverse geographies, carrying memories of distant places into the present. The work extends an invitation to participate in a collective act of listening."

Commissioned and Produced by Factory International, Manchester. In partnership with Rochdale Development Agency.

THE HERDS

3 July - Manchester

4 July - Heywood

5 July - Leigh

Is that an escaped giraffe, a hyena or perhaps a hungry baboon in Heywood?!

Life size animal puppets will take over the streets of Heywood on 4 July as part of Manchester International Festival and Rochdale, Greater Manchester Town of Culture in a breathtaking, untamed spectacle.

Public art meets climate action in THE HERDS – a monumental migration of puppet animals on a 20,000km journey from the Congo basin to the Arctic Circle.

Roaming through cities in West Africa and Europe, the animals are fleeing north to escape climate disaster. THE HERDS is a visual dramatisation of the climate crisis and a stark warning of what may come if animals are forced to flee their natural habitats.

With over 70 life-sized puppets operated by local participants and volunteers in each city, THE HERDS is a public art project on a scale never attempted before - a testament to both the scale of the crisis and the collective effort needed to fight it.

Presented by The Walk Productions and led by Artistic Director Amir Nizar Zubai, it follows the international success of The Walk in 2021, which saw a 12-foot tall puppet of a Syrian refugee girl called Little Amal travel from Turkey to the UK.

Bringing searing questions about the climate crisis to our streets, THE HERDS is a call to action that cannot be ignored.

FREE event. No booking required.

THE CARLTON BALLROOM, GREAT GEORGE STREET

The Ballroom opened its doors for the first time in 1934. Like many ballrooms of this era it was hugely popular. By the 1950s the genre of music has changed with

the introduction of rock 'n' roll. This brought a new generation to the Carlton and it was a popular hangout. By the 1970s the building was a bingo hall which traded until 1989. It reopened in 1995 as the new Carlton Ballroom, before it was eventually demolished in 2006.

ROCHDALE TOWN CENTRE WEST

Lying in the centre of this aerial photograph, which was taken in the early 1960s, lies Rochdale Cricket Club which opened on Dane Street in 1878 at a cost of around £2000. The ground played host to a number of sporting

events including bike races which attracted thousands of spectators. For a period of time Rochdale Hornets also played matches at the ground. The ground was still used for cricket until the 1990's and was eventually redeveloped for an Asda supermarket.

THE ORIGINAL TOWN HALL CLOCK TOWER

Rochdale Town Hall was designed by William Henry Crossland and built between the years 1866 and 1871 in a glorious example of the Gothic Revival style. Following the grand opening of the hall, it was

from white Sicilian marble and it was given to the town in 1899 by Elle McKinnon in memory of her mother Augusta. Sadly the statue deteriorated and in April 1961, it was removed and the Town Hall Committee felt that the cost to restore it was too high.

not long before disaster struck. On April 10th 1883 a fire broke out. Acting like a chimney, the clock tower which housed many library items was destroyed. A new 190-foot stone clock tower and spire in the style of Manchester Town Hall was designed by Alfred Waterhouse and erected in 1888.

LOCAL MUSIC HISTORY:

WEDNESDAY NIGHT AT THE CUBI (KLUB)!

The American vocal group, The Drifters may not be a familiar name to all Style readers, but if I mentioned such songs as "Save The Last Dance For Me", "On Broadway", "Under The Boardwalk", "Saturday Night At The Movies" and "Come On Over To My Place" you would probably be able to sing along with all of them!

In the early 1960s, the group had the pick of the best songs coming out of New York's legendary Brill Building, recording songs by Gerry Goffin, Carole King, Burt Bacharach and Hal David. In more recent years such artists as Robson and Jerome, George Benson and Michael Buble have successfully covered the Drifters' hits and brought them to a new audience.

Regular Style readers will be ahead of me by now and already guessing the Rochdale connection!

Despite having hit records in Britain since 1960 when "Save The Last Dance For Me" reached No. 2 in the singles charts, the group only made their UK debut in 1965. The Drifters' first British dates were in London, first at the Lyceum and two days after at the London Palladium in a midnight charity show with Roy Castle.

Just five days later, the Drifters came to Rochdale's Cubiklub in the town centre. The date was 31st March 1965, a Wednesday night. The group used, as was often the case at the time, a British backing group. The backing group were Johnny B. Great & The Quotations. The Drifters' line-up was lead singer, Johnny Moore, Charlie Thomas, Eugene Pearson, Johnny Terry and their own guitarist Billy Davis. There are no surviving accounts of the group's set list for their Rochdale appearance, but it is highly likely that it was the same as at the Drifters' London debut

- all the hits listed above, along with "At The Club", "When My Little Girl Is Smiling", "This Magic Moment" and their first American hit, "There Goes My Baby".

Often on such tours, groups would play TWO different shows in different towns on the same night! This happened on March 31st 1965. Having played the Cubiklub in Rochdale, the two groups travelled twelve miles over to Bolton to appear in a late night show at the town's Beachcomber Club. Two nights earlier, the group had appeared at Warrington's Parr Hall before hurrying over to Stockport for a late night show. This longer journey - over 20 miles - was also undertaken without motorways or, of course sat nav!

The Drifters' first British tour was a great success, attracting large audiences. During the tour two Drifters singles went into the British charts - "At The Club" and "Come

Over To My Place", no doubt helped by television appearances on Scene At 6.30, Ready Steady Go and Thank Your Lucky Stars. The tour lasted just under three weeks and included a week's residency at Manchester's Buckingham Club. The tour promoter was the notorious Don Arden, better known now as the father of Sharon Osborne.

At this point the story of the Drifters gets rather complicated and, depending on your point of view, either ridiculous or annoying. In 1966 an American vocal group calling themselves The Original Drifters toured Britain no less than three times. None of the members had appeared on the 1965 tour! They returned twice in 1967 and reports of their shows were, how shall we say, "mixed". In such a vast country as the USA this sort of thing was more common, but perhaps, we Brits are a little more discerning in our tastes? Nevertheless, bogus groups were quite common at the time even in the UK. The writer remembers a club in his home town of Chester presenting such acts as "The Tempting Temptations" and "The Fabulous Supremes". Following complaints, the promoters had to put on the advertisements "no connection with the Motown act" in order to escape litigation!

In 1971 the legitimate Drifters returned to Britain, commencing their tour at the famous Wigan Casino. The two week tour - mainly in clubs - was a great success and the group's manager, Faye Treadwell (the widow of a member of an earlier line-up of the Drifters in the 1950s) set about ensuring that her clients benefited from the lucrative British market. A 40 day tour followed in spring 1972 and

Atlantic Records re-released "At The Club" and "Saturday Night At The Movies" as a double A-side (remember them?) which eventually reached No. 3 in the British singles charts.

The Drifters went from strength to strength; they were signed to the Bell label and began a successful partnership with top songwriters Roger Cook and Roger Greenaway. New hits included "Kissing In The Back Row Of The Movies" and "Down On The Beach Tonight" with frequent appearances on Top Of The Pops.

The Drifters became one of the most popular acts on the British cabaret circuit, smashing the box office record at Batley Variety Club previously held by Shirley Bassey! They toured Britain no less than five times in 1975 and continued to regularly visit our country over the next ten years.

Inevitably, the Drifters' line-up changed over the years, even welcoming back former Drifter, Ben E. King who had gone solo in 1960 before going on to record the timeless classic, "Stand By Me".

The group never returned to Rochdale but appeared at such venues as Fagins in Manchester, Queen Elizabeth Hall in Oldham and Wythenshawe's Golden Garter.

Please email us at info@rochdalestyle.com if you saw The Drifters when you were younger! It would be wonderful to read about your memories!

RSPCA HOLLINGWORTH LAKE ANIMAL CENTRE

Latest news & how to show your support

It is now just over two years since The RSPCA Rochdale & District branch moved 'lock, stock and barrel' from Redcross Street into their new home at Hollingworth Lake Animal Centre.

The building underwent major rebuilding and refurbishment to become a modern purpose built facility for the care of abandoned and cruelly treated domestic animals and wildlife casualties.

Since January 2023, they have taken in over 500 domestic animals, the majority of which they have been able to rehome and over 300 wildlife casualties temporarily kept in their holding facility before release or transfer.

The RSPCA team have recently come through an unprecedented period of cruelty and abandonment of pets, particularly cats and kittens. They receive a huge amount of visitors and calls asking for help and advice regarding unwanted pets; sometimes this is the owner's last resort if their circumstances have changed, such as moving into a care home and the RSPCA do all they can to help.

However, sometimes there are heartbreaking cases of cruel abandonment, such as the six kittens recently dumped in a wheelie bin who were trying to eat dirty nappies to survive. An RSPCA staff member and a volunteer rescued them and took them to the safety of the animal centre. Following rehabilitation, fortunately, all have been rehomed.

VOLUNTEERING

As well as the RSPCA staff, there are wonderful volunteers who help with the animals behind the scenes, on reception, in the onsite gift shop or as trustees. The animal centre also offer opportunities to students on placement or on the Duke of Edinburgh scheme. Please ask at reception if you are interested in volunteering.

WAYS YOU CAN HELP

The Rochdale Branch is currently facing a funding crisis with sharp increases in running costs. You can help by:

• Becoming a Friend of the Animal Centre

• Following the Facebook page "RSPCA Hollingworth Lake Animal Centre" for updates

• Visiting the onsite gift shop

• Hiring the Lake Room, the onsite meeting room

• Visiting a Rochdale Branch charity shop

• Leaving a gift in your will. Charity no 232257

• Donating via the GoFundMe page

SKYLIGHT CIRCUS BRINGING JOY TO THE COMMUNITY

Bringing Families Together Through Circus Arts

Skylight Circus Arts believe in the power of circus to bring people together, build confidence, and create unforgettable memories. One of their recent projects, Side by Side Circus, is doing exactly that for families across Rochdale. Supported by the Greater Manchester Integrated Care Board, these Saturday sessions offer families a unique opportunity to learn, play, and grow together in a safe, inclusive, and creative space.

For many families, finding activities where everyone can participate and feel welcome can be a challenge. Side by Side Circus provides a supportive environment where parents, carers, and children can explore circus skills at their own pace. From juggling and balancing to aerial cocoon swings, every session is designed to be fun, engaging, and accessible to all.

Bringing Joy to Care Homes

Skylight’s current project, Silver Circus works with older people, who often don’t have opportunities to engage in the arts. By using circus skills as a tool to help people relax, achieve and work together, the project brings back smiles, self-belief, and a sense of playfulness and reconnection. Thanks to funding from the National Lottery Community Fund they recently extended some of their work into local Rochdale care homes for the elderly.

Over the course of eight weeks Skylight circus tutors, Mick and Martine were welcomed with open arms at Beechwood Lodge Care Home and Belvoir Care Home, in Rochdale. These homes support the elderly with dementia who are in residential care. Through the Silver Circus project, Skylight has been bringing circus skills into the homes, creating opportunities for residents to play, inspire creativity, and develop connections with their fellow residents.

Spinning plates and juggling were both firm favourite for some of the residents. One Belvoir Care Home resident commented: "How wonderful. I do enjoy throwing and catching those juggling balls… Wahoo!".

Fancy joining the circus?

From youth to adult classes, Skylight Circus provide a welcoming, inclusive environment where you can make friends and find new passions.

At Skylight's fully accessible building at St Chads, Rochdale, you’ll find everything from trapeze and juggling, to unicycling and aerial hoop, in a fun, social environment. Whether you’re looking to improve fitness, try something new, or find a supportive community, their classes will offer you so much more than just circus skills.

LOCAL SCHOOLS & NURSERIES RAISE £60K FOR SPRINGHILL

At the end of 2024, schools and nurseries around the Rochdale borough took part in the Springhill Hospice Reindeer Run, where children received sponsorships for activities to raise money for our local hospice.

An annual schools event, Springhill’s Community Fundraiser Jenna, has grown participating numbers from 10 schools in 2022, to a whopping 33 in 2024. That’s more than half the schools in the Rochdale borough. In doing so, together they have almost double last year’s fundraising total of £32,000 to a colossal £60,000.

Fundraiser Jenna said:

“Not only has it helped build strong community relationships, and raise an amazing amount of money, I really do think that me going into local schools with Springhill mascot Springy has really helped younger supporters understand a bit more about the Hospice, what it does and really importantly, that it’s not a scary place. The £60,000 raised will fund 7.5 days or running the Hospice, which is wonderful but goes to show what a huge job we have in fundraising to keep our services going and free to use for anyone in Rochdale who needs them.”

would like to thank every school and child who got involved and all those who donated, with a special thanks going to Crossgates Community Primary who raised the most money with £7,867.00. He’s to even more in December 2025!
