JIMMY CRICKET 80TH BIRTHDAY INTERVIEW
Rochdale has its fair share of famous faces, but few are as instantly recognisable – or as well loved – as Jimmy Cricket.
The Irish-born comedian, who made his home in Rochdale many years ago, has been bringing laughter to audiences across the country for more than half a century with his trademark wellies worn on the wrong feet, gentle humour and unmistakable catchphrase, "Come here, there's more!".
Now celebrating his 80th birthday, Jimmy remains as cheerful and down-to-earth as ever. Despite a career that's taken him from seaside theatres to television screens and royal variety shows, he's happiest right here in Rochdale, with wife May, and his family and friends.
Style Editor, Ruth, caught up with Jimmy to chat about reaching this special milestone, his fondest memories from a lifetime of comedy, and why he still loves nothing more than making people laugh.
Ruth: Congratulations on turning 80! How did you celebrate the big day?
Jimmy: Well, we got all the family round and the grandchildren. And then my daughter, Jamie, out in Florida was on the WhatsApp! So it was just wonderful to have the family around me for the occasion, you know.
I’m also sharing the stage with my friends and fellow comedians on 1st November for 'Jimmy Cricket’s Big Birthday Gala Show' at the Quays Theatre at The Lowry.
I was there a good couple of years back and it has a lovely ambience... I thought my dream would be to have my 80th in a nice venue like this, with a great atmosphere and a lot of my friends, and then raise money for one of my favourite charities, which is Francis House Children’s Hospice.
So we have Sid Little, Roy Walker, Steve Royle, Barbara Nice, another Belfast comic Adrian Walsh, my daughter Katie Mulgrew and then Tim Vine coming all the way from London, bless him.
You've performed at so many venues over the years – do you have a favourite?
Well, the Frank Matcham theatres are wonderful. I like The Grand in Blackpool, that’s lovely – and the Belfast Opera House. I was lucky enough to play there in January with Roy Walker and Adrian Walsh. And of course, Belfast being my hometown it's always very special.
Was your very first gig in Belfast?
Oh yes! Well, in the 60s growing up in Belfast my friends and I used to hang around the street corner. It was an innocent thing – we used to have bags of fish & chips and sing songs… “Tonight we’ll do a Beatles medley!"...
One night, one of the guys said there’s a talent show to win a fiver, so I did a tribute to P.J. Proby who was big in the 60s and won the fiver! Then we went back to the cafeteria and I bought everybody a Knickerbocker Glory… happy memories!
Looking back, is there a moment or achievement that stands out as particularly special to you?
Well, my first break was on ITV's Search For A Star competition. From that, I did my first Royal Gala show with Princess Margaret, and that was lovely.
I had four series of "And There’s More" with Central Television, and some wonderful people on the shows with me – Rory Bremner on the first, Brian Conley on the second. You’re living the dream at that point.
The wonderful thing about YouTube is we can get stuff up from archives, so young people can see what it was like then. And when you look at the sets and the money that went into those type of shows, like The Two Ronnies and Morecambe and Wise – it was just an amazing time.
Did you ever imagine, all those years ago, that you’d still be making people laugh at 80?
Well, you don't, do you? You have a dream and you have faith that if you work hard enough you’ll get there. I find a strong faith helps. It would be so easy to give up along the road, on those hard, tough nights. When a comic doesn't do well in the club, he walks off to the sound of his own feet!
You get philosophical, you know, you bounce back. It's astonishing – you could be working doing a week in South Wales and one audience wouldn't like it. Next night you'll go to another venue a couple of miles up the road and they love you!
You’ve called Rochdale home for many years nowwhat do you love most about living here?
Myself and May live near Healey Dell which is just a beautiful place. And the people are all very friendly and warm hearted. I've built up a nice network of friends over the years.
And of course I do little jam nights at local parish halls where I try new material!
(continued...)
What do you make of the new generation of comedians? Who do you enjoy watching?
Tim vine, obviously, and Milton Jones. And Michael McIntyre is very good. Great body language.
If you could share a message with your younger self, what would it be?
I would say, hang on in there, with enthusiasm - look forward to each day and never give up!
Keep working away, calmly, focused on making the next audience happy, you know, believe it'll all work out.
It seems like you’ve always had the drive and determination to succeed?
I think you do need that, don't you? I think inspirational books were good for that. You know, there are some wonderful books. There's a book by Napoleon Hill called Think and Grow Rich – that’s fabulous for any young person. The first phrase goes something like: "Thoughts are things, and powerful things at that, when they are mixed with definiteness of purpose, persistence, and a burning desire for the reality".
What are you up to at the moment?
I'm keeping busy! Tomorrow night I'm at the North Pier in Blackpool with Mick Miller, Tommy Cannon from Cannon and Ball and Ben Nickless – a younger comedian who loves traditional comedy; he does panto with Jason Manford at the Palace.
I also have a residency in Blackpool. Blackpool's always been in my heart and I play a hotel called the Lyndene Hotel. I do four shows a year; this is my 10th year and I'm going back next year! So I’m very proud of that.
I mean, our particular business has changed dramatically. Traditional comedy. But there is still a market for people like me. There's a channel called Talking Pictures and just last weekend they took over a cinema for a weekend at the Hebden Bridge Picture House. I did the half hour on the Saturday and it was packed with older people – Bernie Clifton was on and Robin from The Grumbleweeds and they interviewed the Nolans. Their motto is "life in the past lane!!", so you know, there is a market there.
Are you still coming up with new jokes every day?
Oh yes! It’s good to keep your mind active and fresh. I think with somebody like myself, and Mick Miller feels the same, we will always be writing because younger people come in and I feel they will enjoy visual humour. I'm not doing the act I did in the 80s. Basically I've still got the same character but I'm adding. If you're always adding and you're always working, you're always match fit, you know.
You've written your autobiography recently?
Yes I did a lot of it in the lockdown as I had so much time to do rewrites and look up my family history.
I was learning new things right the way up to when I wrote it. I've got a surviving brother called Brian who lives in Glasgow and he's coming up to 90. I called him and he said that my mum and dad met at amateur dramatics, would you believe?
I never thought there was much, you know, showbiz in the family, but I found out they're bloody thespians! So that was a lovely revelation.
I hope the book brings back warm memories for older readers, and gives a taste to younger readers of a form of entertainment that seemed to vanish before our very eyes.

ROCHDALE MUSICAL THEATRE COMPANY
to stage North West musical premiere
Rochdale Musical Theatre Company (RMTC) has never been afraid to dream big, and they're about to do it again! In spring 2026, the award winning company will present something truly special – the North West amateur premiere of Dear Evan Hansen.
Known for their spectacular, familyfriendly musicals such as Grease, Beauty and the Beast, and Shrek the Musical, RMTC is taking on something a little different this time – a powerful, contemporary show that brings a piece of Broadway and the West End right to the heart of Rochdale.
Winner of six Tony awards, a Grammy and an Oliver award, Dear Evan Hansen is a story about life, connection and finding where you belong.
With an unforgettable score by Benj Pasek and Justin Paul (La La Land, The Greatest Showman), the show features iconic songs including "You Will Be Found", "Waving Through a Window", and "For Forever".
The show tells the story of Evan, a socially anxious teenager who gets caught up in a lie that spirals out of control, all while he's just trying to fit in and find his place in the world.
It's a story that tackles mental health, loneliness and the impact of social media – topics that feel more relevant now than ever.
Director, John Wood, commented:
"If you've ever struggled to find your place, Dear Evan Hansen will speak to you. It's a story about hope, healing and finding light even when things feel dark. You'll leave reminded that you truly matter."
Founded in 1898, RMTC are in their 127th year of bringing musical theatre to Rochdale.
Secretary, Kath Meredith, said:
"We've staged many different types of musicals over the years, from Gilbert and Sullivan to Disney and everything inbetween! Dear Evan Hansen is something completely different but I'm sure it will be one of our most memorable shows to date.
"We're thrilled to be the first amateur theatre company in the North West, and one of the first in the UK, to stage the show and I'd encourage everyone to come along with family and friends."
RMTC will once again take to the stage at the magnificent Champness Hall in the heart of Rochdale Town Centre – a venue that's enjoying a new lease of life as it celebrates its 100th year.
Production Manager, Jamie Jackson, commented:
"Dear Evan Hansen will be our sixth production at Champness Hall and we can't wait to return to this amazing venue. The talented cast, modern staging and incredible live orchestra will blow you away."
Audiences can expect the talent and production quality of a major West End show – but at a fraction of the price. With ticket costs soaring in Manchester and London, RMTC offers theatre lovers the chance to experience a very special show, right here in Rochdale.
Tickets are on sale now for this unmissable production!

Fiona Daly, from Wills & Wishes Legal has one simple goal: to make it easier for people in Rochdale to put a Will and Lasting Powers of Attorney (LPA) in place, to protect themselves and their families for the future.
We all like to think we’re in control – of our health, our money, and our future. But what would happen if you suddenly couldn’t make important decisions for yourself?
A Lasting Power of Attorney (LPA) - for property and finance or for health and welfare - is a legal document that allows you to appoint one or more people (called Attorneys) to help you make decisions or to make decisions on your behalf if you become unable to do so yourself.
Take our quick test to see if it’s time to put one in place...
1 - Do you have savings, investments or property in your name?
Without an LPA, even your spouse, partner or children can’t access or manage your accounts if you lose mental capacity.
2 - Do you want to choose who makes decisions for you?
An LPA lets you appoint someone you trust.
3 - Do you have regular bills, insurance, or online accounts?
Without an Attorney in place to help you, those can be frozen until the courts step in.
4 - Do you own or co-own a home?
If you needed to sell, remortgage or rent it out, only a registered Attorney could legally do this if you couldn't.
5 - Do you assume your spouse or children could "take care of things"?
Many people think the same - but legally, they can’t without a registered LPA.
If you lose mental capacity due to dementia, a stroke or accident, no one – not even your spouse or childrenautomatically has the right to make decisions for you.
6 - Do you run a business or employ staff?
If you couldn’t work, who would sign contracts, pay suppliers, or keep things running?
7 - Do you travel frequently or live part-time abroad?
An LPA ensures someone can handle matters at home when you’re away.
8 - Do you want your healthcare wishes respected?
A Health & Welfare LPA makes sure your preferences about life sustaining treatment and care are followed, giving you a voice if you can't speak for yourself. You remain in charge until you lose mental capacity.
9 - Do you have children or loved ones who rely on you financially?
Having an LPA protects them from stress and uncertainty if something happens to your mental capacity.
10 - Do you think you’re too young to need one?
LPAs aren’t just for later life, they’re for anyone who wants to forward plan. Think of it like a Will or insurance.
IF YOU ANSWERED “YES” TO EVEN ONE QUESTIONYOU NEED AN LPA.
Putting an LPA in place now is simple, affordable, and ensures that your voice is always heard.
With almost 200 five star Google reviews, Fiona guarantees a friendly, reliable, professional service, in the comfort of your own home, at a time to suit you. If you’d like a chat with Fiona about Wills or Lasting Powers of Attorney please call 07799 213 721.

ROCHDALE'S GIANT ART GALLERY
'Common Walls' International Mural Festival
Rochdale was transformed into an open-air art gallery as local and world-famous artists came together for the ‘Common Walls’ International Mural Festival, with over 18,000 visitors descending on the town centre to take a look.
Part of Rochdale’s year as Greater Manchester Town of Culture, the colourful event saw stunning artwork appear on ten buildings, with other artwork on nearby walls and spaces.
The festival provided a chance to see artwork being created up close by world-renowned artists, with designs telling the story of Rochdale, its history, people and culture.

'AUNTIE' SURIYA BEGUM by Smug
Epod putting the finishing touches to his piece
WIRED’ on Smith Street
Artists taking part included Insane51, Onur, Smug, SecaOne, AYLO, Epod, Lei Mai, Cabasa Carnival Arts and many more.
The murals are located within a 30-minute walking route around Rochdale town centre, with sites including Drake Street, Smith Street, Baillie Street and Bell Street. A map can be downloaded at rochdale.gov.uk/TownOfCulture.
Australian-born muralist Smug is known for hyperrealistic, spray-painted artworks blending nature and humanity, often focussing on everyday individuals. His mural features ‘Auntie’ Suriya Begum, a beloved Rochdale community champion known for her support of others, selected by the artist through an open-call. Smug shot her portrait before the festival to create the image that formed the basis of this mural.
Epod's piece ‘TOTAL.E WIRED’ on Smith Street was inspired by the title of the Fall song ‘Totally Wired’ which was recorded in Rochdale. The subject appears to be connected by something that is out of her control, an observation that manifests in modern life as a result of technology and media influences.
Seca One is known for vivid, large-scale murals that blend expressive portraiture with powerful themes rooted in resilience, identity and social justice. His design captures Rochdale's involvement in the ‘Madchester’ cultural explosion of the late 80's, when Manchester became the epicentre of new music. Many of these artists recorded at Rochdale’s ‘Cargo Studios’, later featured in the 2002 film ’24 Hour Party People’.
Councillor Sue Smith, cabinet member for communities and co-operation at Rochdale Borough Council, said:
"We wanted this festival to help celebrate the creative spirit and heritage in Rochdale during our special year as Greater Manchester Town of Culture. It has certainly done that, showcasing local and internationally renowned artistic talent, as well as some of the diverse networks of creative organisations in and around Rochdale. We’ve already welcomed visitors from far and wide, many coming to the town for the first time. We want Rochdale to be a place where creativity, community and opportunity come together, so this festival was part of that, reflecting the borough’s pioneering and cooperative approach and there’s lots more to come."

An eye-catching photo realistic mural by Rochdale artist PIGE, aka Tara Smith.
Cabasa Carnival Arts produced their first mural, exploring Women’s Unheard Stories around reproductive health care. The project was inspired by women’s stories from across Greater Manchester, including Seriously Crafty and Soul Sisters based in Rochdale.
SECA ONE is known for vivid, large-scale murals that blend expressive portraiture with powerful themes.
AWARD-WINNING STREET ARTIST AYLO
Rochdale artist Hayley Garner, aka Aylo, is an awardwinning street artist whose striking murals have gained international acclaim. As the lead artist and curator of the recent Common Walls Mural Festival, she's transformed walls here in her hometown, as well as across the globe. We caught up with Hayley to talk about her incredible journey and the inspiration behind her work...
How did your career as a mural artist first begin?
It’s been quite a journey! Over ten years ago I opened a little paint shop in Afflecks Palace, Manchester, called Dirty Work. People began asking me to paint small bedrooms and shop shutters, then offices and bigger external walls. I also ran a couple of graffiti and street art events in Manchester, and that’s where I met CBLOXX. We clicked and started collaborating under the name Nomad Clan.
The walls got bigger and bigger, and before long we were painting the tallest mural in the UK, 47 metres high in Leeds city centre back in 2015. After that, we didn’t stop for the next five years. We were bouncing around the globe painting in places like Berlin, New York, Sweden, Bali, and Mexico.
When lockdown hit, that pause made me reflect. It gave me time to figure out who I was outside the duo. Nomad Clan still comes together for the big projects, but I’ve loved carving out my own direction again.
I’ve since set up a CIC with another artist, Christian Fenn (Seca One). We raise funds from creative work to help pay for therapy and rehab for people who find it difficult to access it. I also started The Big Heart Projects, which facilitates larger initiatives like the Common Walls festival we just did in Rochdale.
What inspired your move from graffiti and smaller works to the huge murals you’re known for now?
It was a natural progression really. When I first started out, it was all about experimenting and learning to paint. But once you start painting bigger walls, there’s no going back. You realise how powerful that scale can be.
I’ve always been drawn to storytelling and symbolism, so the bigger the wall, the more room there is to express that.
And on a practical level, I love the challenge of it. Figuring out access, composition, proportions, and the physical graft. There’s something really satisfying about standing back at the end of a massive wall and thinking, yeah, we did that. I’m shattered, but we did that.
How does it feel to bring your art back to your hometown?
It means the world, honestly. I’ve painted in so many cities around the world, but nothing compares to coming home and painting in Rochdale.
The idea behind Common Walls was to show that Rochdale can stand alongside anywhere else in terms of creativity, to bring world-class art right here and make it accessible to everyone. As a curator, it was amazing to welcome artists I’ve met on my travels, artists I’ve spent years looking up to and admiring, and have them paint in the town I grew up in. It felt full circle.
There’s so much pride in seeing people stop in the street to watch, take photos, and ask questions. It’s personal for me. This town shaped who I am, so bringing art back here feels like giving something back.
What impact do you think street art can have in the regeneration of towns like Rochdale?
A massive one. Street art can completely change how people see a place. It brings new life, pride, and identity.
When a wall that was once grey or forgotten suddenly bursts with colour, it shifts the energy of an area. People start taking ownership, they feel proud again. Businesses benefit, visitors come, and suddenly the whole perception of the town changes. I’ve seen it happen in so many places I’ve painted. Creativity really can help change the narrative around towns and forgotten spaces.
Tell us about your Rochdale murals "Dreams Never End" and "Bent Not Broken". What’s the story behind them?
"Dreams Never End" takes its name from New Order’s track recorded in Rochdale and speaks to the ongoing fight for women’s rights. The figure holds a Votes for Women leaflet, with the ghostly image of Ann Tweedale behind her. She’s a semi-mythical character said to have been created by the early co-operative movement to bring women into the cause. The Co-op gave women the right to vote and make decisions long before the suffragette movement did.
Painted in flax-blue tones, it honours the invisible labour of women who spun linen at home before the cotton mills, work that played a huge role in sustaining Rochdale during the cotton famine.
"Bent Not Broken" tells the story of Betty Blomley, a woman from Rochdale folklore who was said to collect bent pins from the town’s wishing well at dusk. People would toss pins in while making a wish, and Betty, living on the edge of poverty, gathered them up, straightened them out, and sold them on to feed her family.
For that, she was called a witch. Like so many women throughout history, she was condemned for simply surviving. This mural reclaims Betty as a symbol of resilience and quiet strength. The red hood connects her to the Northern legend of Mother Redcap, another woman caught between myth and misunderstanding.
How do you hope people will connect with the murals?
I hope they see themselves in them, their pride, their stories, their history. I want the work to spark conversations, make people feel proud of where they’re from, and hopefully inspire the next generation to pick up a can or a brush.
Will the Common Walls Festival be returning?
I really hope so. The response has been amazing and people have really embraced it. I’d love to keep building on what we’ve started.
What’s coming up for you?
There’s a lot happening! We’re wrapping up filming for Darkness to Light Episode 2. We’ve just finished the mural for that, which is in Darnhill precinct and focuses on violent crime and building safer communities.
In the new year, I’ll be working on several projects for Rochdale’s Youth Art Festival. And who knows what’s next. I’ve got a few international projects bubbling away too.
Any advice for young local artists inspired by your work?
Start small but dream big. Just keep creating, experimenting, and finding your own voice. Get involved with local events, volunteer, and connect with other creatives. And most importantly, stay true to your message. That’s what gives your art power, not how polished it looks, but how honest it is.

Recent news from Bluebird Care Rochdale
Bluebird Care Rochdale recently celebrated their 7th anniversary – and what a journey it's been!
Director, John Keogh said: "A huge thank you to our hard working team for their continued passion, care and dedication. And thank you, as always, to our wonderful customers."
As a proud part of the local community, the team at Bluebird Care are excited to share some recent updates...
FROM CHOCOLATES TO FOOTBALL CHEER!
We love making our customers feel special – especially on their birthdays! Whether it's a box of chocolates, a bunch of flowers or something more personal we always go that extra mile.
Our lovely Elaine is a huge Manchester United fan so we couldn't resist surprising her with a present from Old Trafford for her birthday. Just look at those smiles!
MAKING EVERY DAY BRIGHTER FOR OUR CUSTOMERS
Here’s our wonderful Care Assistant Jane out on a social visit with the lovely Shirls.
This moment perfectly shows the joy, connection, and trust between our care team and customers. It’s not just about care, it’s about companionship, laughter, and making every day brighter.
We’re so proud of the relationships our carers build – and this photo says it all!
We recently had the pleasure of welcoming Elaine and Edwin from Rotary Heywood 2020 into the Bluebird office!
They generously donated a selection of twiddlemuffs –beautifully hand-knitted sensory comfort aids designed to support individuals with dementia, learning disabilities, or restless hands. These thoughtful creations help reduce anxiety and provide comfort by offering tactile stimulation through ribbons, buttons, and textured wool.
A huge thank you to Elaine, Edwin, and Rotary Heywood 2020 for their kindness and support – your donation will make a real difference to our service users.
MAKING A DIFFERENCE
We always appreciate hearing from our customers. We were delighted to receive this heartfelt review:
"I would like to specially thank one member of staff for his help with my mother last Thursday night when she was poorly and an ambulance was called. Rehan was so kind and caring, not wanting to leave us. All the carers are wonderful."
We're incredibly proud of Rehan and all of our team for making a real difference.
THANK YOU TO ROTARY HEYWOOD 2020

JAMM’S CHRISTMAS CHEER
The wonderful, inspirational JAMM [Johnny Alfrey Music Memorial] is named after founder Julie Alfrey’s son who died unexpectedly aged 22 from sudden heart failure.
Johnny was a music obsessed kid and wrote his own songs from a very young age. He played many instruments and formed the band 'Starboard Jubilee' with his friends whilst at Hollingworth Academy. His dream was to have a space to rehearse and even a studio to record.
During lockdown, he recorded many songs, which his band now play once a year at the main memorial eventJAMMfest! Johnny's friend Jordan now sings, with his little brother Archie on drums and his dad playing guitar.
JAMMfest is planned and ran by its young members, from filming and stage design, to compering and sound tech.
On 14 December they will be celebrating Christmas and what would be Johnny's birthday, with an indoor family extravaganza at The Empire, Rochdale. JAMM’s young bands will perform Christmas songs and well-known Rock favourites. It will be a great singalong afternoon and evening, with special guests, and maybe a visit from Father Christmas!

ROCHD'ALE' WINTER ALE TRAIL RETURNS THIS
NOVEMBER
The Great Rochd'ale' Winter Ale Trail is making its much anticipated return this November, promising four days of great ale and a lively celebration of Rochdale town centre’s fantastic pub and bars.
Organised by Rochdale Town Centre Business Improvement District (BID), the popular twice-yearly event will run from Thursday 6 - Sunday 9 November.
Designed to showcase the town’s growing number of traditional pubs, micropubs and bars, the Ale Trail invites visitors to explore ten participating venues, choose from over 100 ales and ciders, and soak up the sociable atmosphere with family and friends.
Each venue on the trail offers its own unique experience, from lively bars to intimate micro pubs, with local and independent breweries providing an impressive range of cask ales. Many venues will also be hosting live music and serving delicious food, to suit every taste and budget, throughout the four-day event.
Dan Brett, Landlord of The Baum, one of the participating venues, said:
"We always look forward to the Ale Trails - they're a great opportunity to showcase our local venues and breweries and shout about the fact that we have one of (if not the) best towns for cask ale in the country.
Dan added: "Cask Ale is much more than just pints of bitter, it's a unique part of our national identity and I'd really encourage people to come down and give it a go."
Participants are encouraged to collect a stamp at each venue in a special Ale Trail booklet.
Those who complete the full trail will be rewarded with a limited edition Ale Trail t-shirt. Also, by sharing photos of your drinks and stamps on social media, you could win a £50 voucher. A winner will be selected each day of the Ale Trail.
Paul Ambrose, Rochdale Town Centre BID Manager, commented:
"The Ale Trail was created to let locals - and visitors from further afield - find out for themselves why the town centre is one of the best destinations for beer in the North.
"This growing event is only possible due to the awardwinning bars and pubs which continue to offer a warm welcome, and the great ale offer is backed up by knowledgeable and friendly staff."
The venues taking part are: The Flying Horse Hotel, The Regal Moon, Hogarths, Our Gracie’s, The Baum, Wakey Wakey Brew Co, Empire, The Pint Pot, The Lucky Duck, Moody Blue.
The event also offers a perfect opportunity to view Rochdale’s new large-scale street art. Murals created during the Common Walls International Mural Festival add an interesting backdrop to the trail.
The Ale Trail takes place from 6 until 9 November, with venues open from 11am - 11pm. Keep up to date at: facebook.com/RochdaleAleTrail

ANDY'S MAN CLUB:
THE REVOLUTION IN
MEN'S MENTAL HEALTH
No matter how positive we try to be, we can’t escape one tragic fact: every two hours, a man in the UK takes his own life. It’s because of this – and the loss of a dearly-loved family member, Andy – that Luke Ambler and Elaine Roberts founded Andy’s Man Club.
The first meeting was held in Halifax, where nine men turned up to talk, to listen, and to support each other. From that small beginning, Andy’s Man Club has grown into a nationwide movement. Today, more than 6,000 men meet in over 300 venues across the UK every Monday night at 7pm.
Here in our part of the world, there are clubs at RochdaleSpotland (Rochdale AFC, Crown Oil Arena), RochdaleMayfield (Mayfield Sports Centre in Castleton), Milnrow (Milnrow Cricket Club), Oldham Boundary Park (Oldham Athletic FC), Oldham Waterhead (Waterhead Rugby Club in Spring Hill, Oldham), Todmorden, Ramsbottom and two clubs in Bury. Each one opens its doors at 7pm every Monday evening (except bank holidays), free of charge, offering a cuppa and a place to breathe.
Every Andy’s Man Club follows a familiar structure each week so that everyone knows what to expect. It’s not about giving advice or fixing problems; it’s about having a safe, confidential space where men can speak openly about what’s going on in their lives – or simply sit, listen, and take it all in. There’s no pressure to talk.
When I first went to Andy’s Man Club over seven years ago, I was feeling overwhelmed with life. Walking through the door that first time wasn’t easy, but I was welcomed without judgement. Now, I still go every week – partly as a top-up for my own mental health, and partly to keep myself accountable for looking after it.
Many men are brought along to their first meeting by someone who cares about them – a wife, a friend, a daughter, a mate from work – and that small act can make all the difference. Some come once and move forward. Others, like me, keep coming back because they’ve found something solid, something that helps them stay balanced and connected.
What’s said on a Monday night stays in the room. That confidentiality matters. The groups are facilitated by local volunteers who give their time freely, creating a space that’s welcoming, genuine and, above all, safe. I’m proud to have become a facilitator, helping other men to talk freely every week.
Andy’s Man Club has grown because it works. Every week, thousands of men get support for their mental health that they might not otherwise receive. Bit by bit, conversation by conversation, the stigma around men’s mental health is being stripped away.
In towns like Rochdale, Oldham and Bury, men are proving that talking really does save lives.

RSPCA HOLLINGWORTH LAKE ANIMAL CENTRE
Latest news & how you can help
REHOMING CRISIS
There are an unprecedented number of cats and kittens in the RSPCA nationally and in the Rochdale branch, leading to a rehoming crisis.
Neutering or spaying your cat is essential for the control of unwanted kittens and the health of both male and female cats. For advice, please contact your vet or Hollingworth Lake Animal Centre.
COULD YOU PROVIDE A FOREVER HOME?
A good place to start is the RSPCA Rochdale or the national RSPCA "find a pet" website where you can enter your postcode and find cats closest to you. All the profiles have pictures and details, including the cat's age and what kind of home they are looking for. To enquire about adopting, fill in a perfect match form and email it to: rec.rspcarochdale@btconnect.com. You can also ring Hollingworth Lake Animal Centre for information or to book an appointment. All cats are neutered, vaccinated and microchipped.
CHARLIE arrived at the Animal Centre at around 8 weeks old after being found in an alleyway in Rochdale. He was extremely thin, covered in fleas and arrived bleeding from his nose, with blood covering his paws and chest, suggesting trauma. He also developed flu. Following an appeal, he received over £500 in donations from the public towards his recovery and people dropped off little gifts and "get well" cards. He is now doing well!
COOPER was 14 weeks old when he arrived at the Centre after being found dumped in a cardboard box in an alley way with his mum. He had a ruptured ulcer in one of his eyes which meant that he needed to have his eye removed. Cooper had to be separated from his mum, although thankfully he was fully weaned and able to feed independently. After recovering well due to lots of TLC from the staff, he found his forever home.
THANK YOU
As a local branch, RSPCA Rochdale are responsible for raising their own funds to support their work.
The Centre has been generously supported by Fisherfield Childcare recently who raised over £3000 and St Mary's RC Primary School, Littleborough who raised £200.
Local people also responded generously to the recent kitten food appeal.
The Centre has also received generous donations and legacies from individuals.

SMITHY BRIDGE STATION CELEBRATES ITS 40TH BIRTHDAY
Smithy Bridge Station in Littleborough formally celebrated its 40th birthday at a special event in September.
Situated on the Calder Valley Line between Rochdale and West Yorkshire, Smithy Bridge Station was opened in 1868 and closed, before the Beeching Report, in May 1960.
Thanks to an imaginative partnership between Greater Manchester Council, British Rail and Greater Manchester Passenger Transport Executive, the station reopened on 19 August 1985 as a ‘temporary experimental’ station. The ‘experiment’ worked, and the station has long been a permanent feature in the area.
The anniversary event was held at Smithy Bridge Methodist Church with the Mayor of Rochdale, Councillor Janet Emsley and her Consort, Mr Ken Emsley as guests of honour. Rail industry and transport authority staff were represented, as well as Paul Waugh, MP for Rochdale, and members of the local community and Rochdale Council.
Richard Lysons, chair of the Friends of Littleborough Stations (the group that has adopted both Smithy Bridge and Littleborough stations) said:
"Smithy Bridge Station has been an unqualified success over the past four decades, taking thousands of car journeys off our borough's crowded roads. More importantly, for residents without access to private transport, the station is a lifeline to access Rochdale, the cities of Bradford, Leeds, Manchester and Salford and other towns and communities along the line.
"Having two trains per hour from the station for six days a week is a wonderful facility. I know a lot of car owners who now prefer to take the train into Manchester. This twenty minute rail journey into the city centre cannot be matched for speed and convenience by any other form of transport.
"Equally important is the fact that Smithy Bridge Station is adjacent to the Rochdale Canal and only a short walk to Hollingworth Lake and its stunning countryside scenery."
The Mayor of Rochdale, Councillor Janet Emsley represents – and also lives in – the council ward where the station is situated. Councillor Emsley stressed the importance of the station and, as a regular user, hoped that the waiting facilities could soon be improved.
The event was made possible by generous financial support from Transport for Greater Manchester’s Small Grants Fund and Rochdale Council’s Pennine Townships’ Fund.
As part of the celebrations, the volunteer group also published a special commemorative leaflet along with ‘Smithy Bridge 40’ fridge magnets, manufactured in Rochdale by DPS Sign and Screenprint.
Keep up to date with future news, projects and events from station adoption groups along the Calder Valley Line at caldervalleylinecrp.com.

ROCHDALE MUSIC STORIES BEGINS WITH STAR-STUDDED LAUNCH
'Rochdale Music Stories', a brand new campaign celebrating the rich musical history of the Greater Manchester borough, has kicked-off in style with an all-star event.
The project sees Rochdale Development Agency, The Stockport Music Story and Voltalab Sound Studios working together to celebrate Rochdale’s rich musical history while championing its new, emerging talent.
Major talents including Peter Hook (New Order / Joy Division), Andy McCluskey (Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark), and Martin Moscrop (A Certain Ration) were all invited back to the birthplace of some of their most iconic tracks.
Serving as an official launch of Chris Connelly’s new book, 'Cargo Studios', the event saw the author and guest artists share their personal stories of recording at the legendary Rochdale studio in a live panel.
Hosted by DJ and presenter Clint Boon (Inspiral Carpets), the audience in attendance were treated to reflections of how Joy Division recorded "Atmosphere", how A Certain Ratio recorded "All Night Party", and how OMD recorded their first single "Electricity", by their respective creators.
All of these releases were released on Tony Wilson’s Factory Records, and have since achieved widespread acclaim and global recognition. In addition, Clint Boon revealed how his own band, Inspiral Carpets, recorded their first EP 'Planecrash', together at the studio with the assistance of The Chameleons’ Dave Fielding, who produced the record.
Interviewed about his new 360-page hard-back book 'Cargo Studios', Chris Connelly shared revelations from the rich history of the famed Rochdale studio during the period 1977 to 1985.
The prestigious event also provided a launch pad for the forthcoming release of the Rochdale Music Stories album affiliated with the campaign. The upcoming studio-recorded compilation will see contemporary local artists reimagining classic tracks originally recorded at Cargo Studios. At the launch event, artists from both generations were introduced and exchanged compliments for the first time.
A vinyl version of the Rochdale Music Stories album will be available from 14th March 2026, accompanied by a one-off gig at Rochdale’s Champness Hall the same evening which will see the artists involved playing their reinterpretations alongside one of their own original songs. The night will be hosted by Clint Boon and special guests. Further details coming soon.

WINTER GARDEN PROJECT BEGINS
In September 2025, volunteers helped to transform a patient facing space at Springhill Hospice that needed a spruce up as it was overgrown and empty of colour.
Springhill Hospice had over 40 volunteers in 2 days helping with painting, getting the new path under the serpentine bench in place and planting.
Springhill Hospice would like to thank Head Gardener
Michelle for leading this incredible project and Louise Scott DL for coordinating donations.
Thank you to Jewsons and Safe Asbestos for their donations of materials and a skip, Louise for donating to the cause, and of course all the wonderful volunteers and everyone who donated to the Just Giving page.
It will be a beautiful sight when the winter garden is in bloom after the hard work from volunteers and the gardening team.
THREE RESERVOIR RAMBLE RAISES OVER £54,000
On Saturday 20th September 2025, a huge wave of generosity swept through the Rochdale borough as the community came together for the Springhill Hospice annual charity walk, the 3 Reservoir Ramble, which started and finished at The Oxford Pub.
The event brought together over 600 walkers, who showed incredible community spirit and determination, all in support of a vital local cause. From families and friends to local businesses, the response was extraordinary, raising a staggering £54,363!
"This amazing total marks the largest charity fundraising walk the Rochdale borough has seen in recent history," said Sophie Ansley, Springhill Hospice Fundraising Manager.
"We are beyond grateful to everyone who helped make this event such a phenomenal success."
NURSING ASSISTANT CLIMBS YORKSHIRE THREE PEAKS
In August 2025, the wonderful Shan Young, Nursing Assistant at Springhill Hospice, climbed the Yorkshire Three Peaks in aid of Springhill Hospice.
Shan managed to climb the Yorkshire Three Peaks (Pen-y-ghent-2,277 feet, Whernside-2,415 feet and Ingleborough-2,372 feet) in 10 hours and 50 minutes. That’s 60,000 steps and 39.1km!
She managed to raise an incredible £1,125 for Springhill Hospice – what an amazing achievement.
REAL WORDS. REAL DESIGN. BY A REAL HUMAN.
(Because your business deserves more than a robot)
We believe the best ideas come from real conversations. No auto-generated captions, boring articles or those weird posters where you zoom in and there's an extra arm. Just a friendly human who takes the time to understand you and your business–then crafts designs and words that look and sound like you.
