N Artefact: The Act of Magic onderzoekt hoe we magie en het magische in onze hedendaagse samenleving kunnen begrijpen.

Magie is van nature een ambigu concept waaronder een brede waaier van praktijken, begrippen en ideeën vallen. In eerste instantie roept ze veelal de wereld op van goochelaars en illusionisten, de zogenaamde seculiere magie die haar opgang kende in de 19e eeuw.

In een theatrale setting worden hier een reeks trucs uitgevoerd ter entertainment van een publiek dat maar al te graag zijn ongeloof aan de kant zet om zich over te geven aan de betovering en verwondering van het schijnbaar onmogelijke. Die vorm van seculiere magie heeft in de loop van de 20e eeuw zijn weg verder gezet in Hollywoodfilms, reclame & marketing, lifestyle en vaak ook kunst. Aan de andere kant van het spectrum bevindt zich de zogenaamde echte magie, of natuurlijke magie. Een dieper begrip van magie dat voortkomt uit een veel oudere traditie van magische formules, occulte kennis, ceremoniële rituelen en animisme, en dat vertrekt vanuit een intuïtieve ervaring van de wereld. Die twee uitersten zijn echter geen tegengestelden maar twee uiteinden van een continuüm die elkaar wederzijds beïnvloeden en die samen de irrationele schaduwzijde van ons rationeel wereldbeeld vormen.

In onze westerse samenleving die dankzij de vooruitgang in wetenschap en technologie een toenemende demystificatie heeft gekend, heeft magie schijnbaar geen grote rol meer te spelen. Toch heeft het begrip een blijvende en sterke invloed op ons denken. Meer nog, vanuit historisch perspectief wordt duidelijk dat magisch denken en occulte kennisvormen aan de basis liggen van de wetenschap.

Bovendien zien we dat de ontwikkeling van technologie steeds hand in hand gaat met het ontstaan van nieuwe ‘magische’ fenomenen.

Zo was de opkomst van de fotografie en cinema in de 19e eeuw verweven met nieuwe vormen van spiritisme, ging cybernetics in de jaren zestig hand in hand met nieuwe vormen van paganisme en new age en is de hedendaagse informatietechnologie doordrongen van bovennatuurlijke begrippen als ‘haunted algorithms’, ‘mailer daemons’ of ‘render ghosts’.

Ondanks de moderne vooruitgang lijkt de menselijke drang naar het onverklaarbare, naar mysterie en mythologisering, onverwoestbaar. Meer nog, hoe meer de wereld zich organiseert volgens rationele principes, hoe meer die drang terug komt bovendrijven. We wìllen blijven geloven, zij het in een illusie of in het bestaan van echte bovennatuurlijke krachten. En hoewel de wetenschap de mysteries van de wereld voor een groot stuk heeft ontrafeld, bestaat er nog steeds een heel groot aandeel ‘dark matter’ dat buiten ons begripsvermogen valt. Tegelijk ontstaan ook nieuwe zwarte gaten die door de mens zelf gecreëerd worden; systemen die zo complex zijn dat ze ons denken te boven gaan.

De ambigue status van magie ten opzichte van de waarheid maakt echter ook dat het begrip makkelijk geassocieerd wordt met manipulatie, misleiding en bedrog. Hoewel de verwondering die de goochelaar creëert vaak onschuldig vertier is, loopt er in het brede spectrum van magie ook een dunne lijn tussen illusie en charlatanisme, manipulatie en controle. Zo wordt magie op vlak van militaire, politieke, en financiële systemen vaak bewust aangewend als een soort afleidingsstrategie bedoeld om de ongrijpbaarheid van een systeem te versterken. Denk maar aan offshoreconstructies of ‘high frequency trading’-algoritmes. Op vlak van technologie wordt de term ‘haunted technology’ of de zogenaamde ‘ghost in the machine’ steeds prominenter gebruikt in relatie tot smart technology, robotica, het internet der dingen en artificiële intelligentie. En ook in het schouwspel van de hedendaagse politiek, de zogenaamde post politics, of het fenomeen van fake news, worden mistgordijnen gespoten om de aandacht af te wenden van wat zich werkelijk in de coulissen afspeelt. De verhouding tussen magie en een militaire en politieke context, magie en financiële systemen, en magie en technologie wordt intenser naarmate meer en meer systemen ‘black boxes’ worden voor de meerderheid; intransparant, ondoordringbaar, afstandelijk. Magische verwondering maakt hier plaats voor een gevoel van ongemak en onrust met betrekking tot dat wat we niet kennen of kunnen begrijpen, een gevoel van machteloosheid en overweldiging.

De kunstenaars in The Act of Magic laten hun licht schijnen op de verschillende manieren waarop magie en het magische zo in alle lagen van ons dagelijks leven is doorgedrongen. Gefascineerd door de magische kracht van illusie en transformatie gaan ze op zoek naar bezwering, betovering of een diepere laag van bewustzijn. Ze onderzoeken hoe magisch denken als metafoor werkzaam is in de complexe systemen van de hedendaagse wetenschap, politiek, economie of technologie en eigenen zich zijn instrumentarium en vocabularium toe om zo andere vormen van denken te stimuleren die een transformatieve kracht hebben.

Van poëzie tot strategie, van magisch object tot black box, van onschuldige illusie tot manipulatie, van newagezelfhulpreclame naar spiritueel visioen, doorheen de tentoonstelling onthullen de werken ons via het magisch denken een passage naar een andere wereld.

E Artefact: The Act of Magic explores how we can understand magic and the magical in contemporary society. This inherently ambiguous concept evokes a wide range of practices, concepts and ideas. It most commonly refers to the world of magicians and illusionists, the so-called secular magic which gained traction in the 19th century: a theatrical spectacle where magic is understood as trickery in service of entertainment for an audience willing to suspend disbelief in order to be enchanted and dazzled by the seemingly impossible. This form of magic has found, over the course of the 20th century, its continuation in Hollywood Films, marketing & advertisement, lifestyle and oftentimes also art. At the other end of the spectrum, one encounters the so-called real magic, or natural magic: a world full of symbolism and mystery resulting from a much older tradition of magical formulas, occult knowledge, rituals of ceremony and animism, and which has its origins in a more intuitive experience of the world. Together they form two opposite ends of a continuum which mutually affect each other, and which shape the irrational shadow side of our rational worldview.

In our western society, which has undergone a process of increasing demystification due to progress in science and technology, one might think that magic no longer has a role to play. Yet, the concept has a lasting and strong influence on our way of thinking. More importantly, looking back in history, it becomes clear that magical thinking and occult forms of knowledge are at the origin of science. In addition, the development of technologies often go hand in hand with the emergence of new ‘magical’ phenomena. At the beginning of the previous century, for example, the surge of photography and cinematography was accompanied by spiritism. The development of cybernetics in the sixties went hand in hand with new forms of paganism and New Ageism, and today notions such as haunted algorithms, mailer daemons or render ghosts suggest correlations of a similar kind.

In spite of growing advances in modern science and technology, the human need for a remediation of the unexplainable, the mysterious and myth seems to continue to thrive, even in a world that is trying to organize itself according to rationalistic principles. We want to believe, be it in an illusion or in the existence of real magical powers. And although science has already laid bare quite a number of mysteries of the world, a very large portion of ‘dark matter’ remains beyond the scope of human comprehension. At the same time, new black boxes are being created by man: systems so complex they surpass our common understanding.

The ambiguous position of magic vis-a-vis the truth also means that it is easily associated with manipulation, deception and deceit.

Although the fact that enchantment created by the magician is mostly merely a benign form of entertainment, one cannot disregard the fact

that, in the wide spectrum opened up by the concept of magic, there is a fine line between illusion and charlatanism, manipulation and control. In the context of the military, political and financial systems, for example, magic is often consciously deployed as a diversion tactic, intended to increase the elusiveness of a system by ascribing a magical trait to it. This is apparent in, for instance, offshore constructions or high-frequency trading algorithms. In the context of technology, the term ‘haunted technology’ or the so-called ‘ghost in the machine’ is more prominently used with the increased ubiquitousness of smart technology, robotics, the internet of things and artificial intelligence.

Also in the spectacle of contemporary politics, the so-called post-politics, or fake news, smoke curtains are deployed to distract attention from what is really at stake. The relationship between magic and a military and political context, magic and financial systems, and magic and technology becomes increasingly intense the more these systems become ‘black boxes’ to the majority; untransparent, impenetrable, distanced. In these instances, magical enchantment is replaced by a feeling of unease with the uncanny, with the unknown or with what we cannot understand, a feeling of powerlessness and usurpation.

The artists in The Act of Magic shed light on the way in which magic and the magical has permeated all layers of our everyday life.

The exhibition presents a broad range of ways in which the concept of magic and enchantment travels through the world of contemporary visual art and how artists have an equally ambiguous relationship to its understanding. Some, fascinated by the magical power of illusion and transformation, go in search of wonder, incantation, enchantment or a deeper layer of consciousness. Others are critically investigating how magical thinking is operating on a metaphorical level within complex systems of contemporary science, politics, economics or technology.

Yet all are adapting and re-appropriating the instruments and vocabulary of the magician as a tool for transformation. From poetry to activist strategy, from magical object to black box, from benign illusion to deception and manipulation, from New Age self-help advertisement to spiritual vision: the artworks throughout the exhibition incite magical thinking and reveal a passage to another world.

N Squaring the Circle neemt je mee op een visuele trip. De sculptuur van staal is ingepakt in dichte zwarte stof die het licht absorbeert.

Van één kant toont het werk zich als een vierkant terwijl je, vanuit een ander standpunt, een cirkel ziet. Eenvoudig maar eindeloos fascinerend. Je waarneming wordt op de proef gesteld door deze sculptuur die schijnbaar de mogelijkheid biedt om twee tegengestelde vormen samen te brengen. Kunstenaarscollectief Troika baseerde zich voor dit werk op filosofische en empirische debatten, kwantumtheorie en Edwin Abbotts satirische roman Flatland (1884) waarin personages uit een tweedimensionale wereld geen driedimensionele objecten of ruimte kunnen ervaren. Squaring the Circle is het eerste in een reeks ‘perspectiefsculpturen’ dat daarnaast ook de werken Dark Matter (2014) en Polar Spectrum (2015) omvat.

E Constructed from steel and wrapped in a dense black flock material which absorbs light, Squaring the Circle simultaneously displays the form of a square and a circle. It is both resolutely simple and intriguingly complex. Viewers have their logical and visual sensibilities challenged, confronted with a sculpture that points towards a unity of seemingly antithetical forms. The inspiration for the work evolves from philosophical and empirical debates, quantum theory and Edwin Abbott’s satirical novel Flatland where the inhabitants can’t recognise a three-dimensional object or space. Squaring the Circle is the first in Troika’s series of perspective sculptures, which includes Dark Matter (2014) and Polar Spectrum (2015).

N De lichtsculptuur All Colours White onderzoekt de relatie tussen het natuurlijke en het artificiële en de pluraliteit van schijnbaar ondeelbare entiteiten en ervaringen. Het bestaat uit een mechanisme dat rood, blauw en groen licht projecteert op een canvassculptuur in een continue loop van 12 minuten. De kleuren, aanvankelijk gescheiden, lopen langzaamaan in elkaar over en creëren een ingewikkeld spectrum tot de gehele vermenging overgaat in puur wit licht. In tegenstelling tot de gesloten blackboxsystemen, is de technologische component van de installatie transparant. Het werk toont zo dat begrijpen hoe iets werkt de magische ervaring niet noodzakelijk ondermijnt.

In de installatie komen het natuurlijke en het digitale samen. De specifieke combinatie van rood, blauw en groen verwijst naar de kleuren die onze digitale ervaring mediëren terwijl het samengesteld kleurenspectrum inherent aan wit licht van zichzelf uit natuurlijk is.

Vanuit een bijzondere aandacht voor de temporaliteit, subjectieve ervaring en parameters waarmee we de wereld ervaren, onderzoekt All Colours White dat wat samen bestaat, maar niet tegelijkertijd ervaren kan worden.

E All Colours White explores the relationship between what is natural and artificial and the plurality of seemingly indivisible entities and experiences. It consists of a mechanism which projects red, blue and green light onto a canvas sculpture. The projection is a constant loop of 12 minutes. Initially distinct, the colours gradually bleed into each other, creating an intricate spectrum until their collective amalgamation results in pure white light. In contrast to the black box approach, All Colours White lays bare the technology and invites the curious viewer to consider the idea that understanding and enchantment can exist in the same universe.

In addition, in the installation the natural and the digital collide.

The specific combination of red, blue and green references the colours that mediate our digital experience, while the composite colour spectrum inherent in white light is intrinsically natural. With a particular interest in temporality, subjective experience and the frameworks through which we perceive the world, All Colours White investigates that which coexists but cannot be experienced simultaneously.

(H.H. 1917) N De installatie The Disappearance of Media van Jens Brand brengt illusie in rechtstreeks verband met magie zoals begrepen in de context van goochelshows. Zijn werk kan gelezen worden als een ode aan Harry Houdini’s bekende voorstelling The Vanishing Elephant uit 1918. Houdini groeide uit tot de eerste superster onder de magiërs in de vroege dagen van de massamedia. Ondanks zijn reputatie als belabberde performer slaagde hij erin wereldwijd de aandacht te trekken dankzij zijn inzichten in massacommunicatie en zijn publicrelationsstrategieën. De installatie die in STUK getoond wordt, bestaat onder andere uit een one-man theatre die een olifant in klei laat verschijnen en … verdwijnen.

E The installation The Disappearance of Media by Jens Brand directly relates illusions to stage magic. The work can be read as a tribute to Harry Houdini’s famous performance The Vanishing Elephant from 1918. Houdini was one of the first superstars of the early days of mass media. Despite his reputation as a very poor if not clumsy performer, he managed to capture worldwide attention thanks to his understanding of mass media and the resulting public relations strategies. The installation in STUK involves amongst others a one person magic theatre that makes a clay elephant appear and … disappear.

N In THE LONG NOW creëert een machine een zeepbel in een kamer met een gecontroleerde atmosfeer. Wanneer de bel barst, wordt een nieuwe gecreëerd. Als één van de klassieke vanitassymbolen staat de zeepbel voor de vergankelijkheid van het moment en de fragiliteit van het leven. In de 16e en 17e eeuw was het niet alleen een inspiratie voor veel kunstenaars, ook de vroege natuurkundigen waren gefascineerd door dit wonderbaarlijke visuele fenomeen. Het proberen doorgronden van dergelijke natuurlijke wonderen lag mee aan de oorsprong van een groeiende interesse in de wetenschap. In hoogtechnologische labocondities biedt THE LONG NOW de bezoeker de kans om dit fragiele en efemere fenomeen langdurig te observeren en zich te laten meevoeren door dit eindeloos veranderlijk schouwspel van kleur en beweging.

E In the poetic installation titled THE LONG NOW, a machine creates a soap bubble in a controlled atmospheric chamber. When the bubble eventually bursts, the process starts all over again. As one of the classical vanitas symbols the soap bubble stands for the transience of the moment and the fragility of life. It was not only a source of inspiration to many artists in the 16th and 17th century, early physicists were also fascinated by this amazing visual phenomenon. The desire to understand these natural wonders was crucial for the development of a growing interest in science. In high-technological lab conditions, THE LONG NOW offers the visitor the possibility to extensively observe this fragile and ephemeral phenomenon and to be taken away by its ever changing performance of emerging colours and swirling movement.

N In Cultivating Probability presenteert Marjolijn Dijkman een reeks sculpturen in een fictieve antropologische opstelling. De sculpturen zijn geïnspireerd op verschillende praktijken die doorheen de tijd en in verschillende culturen gebruikt werden om de toekomst te voorspellen of om tegenspoed te bezweren. Zo zijn bepaalde objecten interpretaties van traditionele ceremoniële voorwerpen die zich in het Museum Volkenkunde in Leiden en het Afrikamuseum van Berg en Dal in Nederland bevinden. Voor andere elementen heeft Dijkman zich eerder door geschiedkundige en hedendaagse rituelen en technologieën laten inspireren. Haar eigenzinnige reconfiguratie van traditionele en hedendaagse vormen van toekomstvoorspelling resulteert in deze verzameling objecten die de tentoonstellingsruimte op majesteueze wijze bevolken.

E In Cultivating Probability, Marjolijn Dijkman presents a series of sculptures in a fictional anthropological display. The sculptures are inspired by a myriad of practices that throughout time and in different cultures were used to predict or ward off the future. Some of them are interpretations of ceremonial objects found in the collections of the Museum Volkenkunde in Leiden and the Afrika Museum in Berg and Dal. Other objects are influenced by historical and contemporary rituals and technologies. Dijkman combines and reinterprets historical and contemporary ceremonial objects, rituals and technologies in a collection of majestical objects that populate the exhibition space.

N Voor de video-installatie In Our Hands onderzocht Marjolijn Dijkman handgebaren die worden gebruikt om de toekomst te voorspellen, te bezweren of te beïnvloeden. Het werk brengt zowel spirituele als politieke en militaire handgebaren samen. De dubbele projectie toont twee virtueel transparante en geanimeerde handen die aan de ene kant de toeschouwer aanwijzingen lijken te geven, terwijl ze aan de andere kant de illusie opwekken een verlenging van het lichaam van de bezoeker zelf te zijn. De film gaat gepaard met een geluidswerk dat bestaat uit een compositie van computergegenereerde binaurale tonen of breingolven die de eigenschap hebben in te werken op de gemoedstoestand van de bezoeker. Het effect van dergelijke binaurale tonen werd in 1839 door Heinrich Wilhelm Dove ontdekt. In de 20e eeuw kregen ze steeds meer aandacht in de alternatieve medicinale wereld die beweert dat binaurale geluiden relaxatie, meditatie, creativiteit en andere bewustzijnsvormen stimuleren.

E For the video installation In Our Hands, artist Marjolijn Dijkman investigated hand gestures used to predict, ward off or influence the future. The final choreography includes a range of gestures from diverse sources — from spiritual to political to military — removed from their original context. The double projection shows the animation of two virtual transparent hands which on one side seem to be giving directions to the visitor, while on the other side suggesting to be an extension of the body of the viewer. The accompanying sound piece is a composition made of 18 computer generated binaural tones or brainwaves, which are known to affect the mental state of the listener. The effect of these tones was discovered in 1839 by Heinrich Wilhelm Dove. In the late 20th century, they earned greater public awareness. The alternative medicine community claimed that binaural beats helped to induce relaxation, meditation, creativity and other mental states.

N HEXEN 2.0 is een verzameling van werken die bestaat uit alchemistische diagrammen, een set tarotkaarten, prints, een video en een website.

HEXEN 2.0 onderzoekt hoe wetenschappelijk onderzoek achter overheidsprogramma’s rond massacontrole verweven zijn met de countermovement en grassrootsbewegingen van de jaren 60. In de naoorlogse politieke en militaire context van de VS traceert Treister de links tussen diverse exacte en humane wetenschappen in de ontwikkeling van de cybernetica, de geschiedenis van het internet, de opkomst van Web 2.0 en de toenemende bewaking door veiligheidsdiensten. Ze probeert zo de implicaties voor de toekomst te traceren waarin nieuwe vormen van sociale manipulatie ons steeds verder in de richting van een controlemaatschappij duwen.

Specifiek aan de basis van HEXEN 2.0 lagen de Macy Conferences (1946-1953) die tot doel hadden een theorie van de menselijke geest te ontwikkelen. Een diverse groep wetenschappers verenigden zich over de grenzen van hun disciplines heen. HEXEN 2.0 kijkt tegelijkertijd naar verschillende filosofische, literaire en politieke antwoorden op de technologische vooruitgang zoals AnarchoPrimitivisme en Post-Leftism, Theodore Kaczynski / The Unabomber, Technogaianisme en Transhumanisme, en traceert de ideeën van o.a. Thoreau, Warren, Heidegger en Adorno in relatie tot utopische en dystopische visies van de toekomst afkomstig uit sciencefiction­ literatuur en film.

De diagrammen in HEXEN 2.0 kan men benaderen als uitgebreide mindmaps die alle inhoudelijke connecties samenbrengen.

Delen hiervan werden opnieuw opgetekend en verzameld in een eigenzinnig ontworpen set tarotkaarten. Traditioneel bestaat een set tarotkaarten uit 78 kaarten: 22 kaarten die de Grote Arcana genoemd worden en de grote thema’s uit het leven vertegenwoordigen, en 56 kaarten die de Kleine Arcana genoemd worden en die gewone personen en alledaagse gebeurtenissen vertegenwoordigen. In STUK wordt Treisters Grote Arcana gepresenteerd. Zo neemt

psycholoog, futurist en voorvechter van het gebruik van LSD voor therapeutische en spirituele verrijking Timothy Leary de plaats in van de Magiër terwijl Aldous Huxley, auteur van Brave New World, de rol van Zot op zich neemt. Elk diagram bevat een schat aan informatie, een wirwar aan associaties en hyperlinks, wachtend om ontcijferd te worden door de bezoeker. Het derde element dat in STUK gepresenteerd wordt, is de video. Het document toont het gemanipuleerde beeld dat de illusie wekt als ware de deelnemers van de Macy Conferences betrokken in een seancesessie.

HEXEN 2.0 biedt samengevat een alternatieve kijk op de recente geschiedenis, die complexiteit en dubbelzinnigheid niet schuwt maar net omarmt. Met de Macy Conferences en de opkomst van de cybernetica als centraal punt, worden onverwachte verbanden en connecties blootgelegd tussen schijnbaar oppositionele kennisvormen en maatschappelijke groeperingen, van wetenschap tot new age, van militair onderzoek tot de hippiecultuur, van magie tot technologie. Een wirwar van logische en irrationele verbindingen die zich voordoen in de menselijke zoektocht naar het begrijpen en controleren van de menselijke geest.

E HEXEN 2.0 is a collection of works consisting of alchemical diagrams, a Tarot deck, photo-text works, a video and a website.

The work looks into histories of scientific research behind government programmes of mass control, investigating parallel histories of countercultural and grassroots movements. HEXEN 2.0 charts, within a framework of post-WWII U.S. governmental and military imperatives, the coming together of diverse scientific and social sciences through the development of cybernetics, the history of the internet, the rise of Web 2.0 and increased intelligence gathering, and the implications for the future of new systems of societal manipulation towards a control society.

HEXEN 2.0 specifically investigates the participants of the seminal Macy Conferences (1946-1953), whose primary goal was to set the foundations for a general science of the workings of the human mind. The conference united scientists across their disciplines.

HEXEN 2.0 simultaneously looks at diverse philosophical, literary and political responses to advances in technology including the claims of Anarcho-Primitivism and Post Leftism, Theodore Kaczynski / The Unabomber, Technogaianism and Transhumanism, and traces precursory ideas such as those of Thoreau, Warren, Heidegger and Adorno in relation to visions of utopic and dystopic futures from science fiction literature and film.

Treister’s diagrams can be understood as dense mind maps exploring all these connections. Parts of it re-emerge in a peculiar set

of Tarot cards, designed by Treister. Traditionally, a set of Tarot cards consists of 78 cards: 22 which are called the Major Arcana and which represent the grand themes of life, and 56 cards which make up the Minor Arcana, representing normal people and everyday events. In STUK, Treister’s Major Arcana is presented. Psychologist, futurist and advocate of therapeutic use of LSD, Timothy Leary takes the place of the Magician, while Aldous Huxley, author of Brave New World, becomes the Fool. Every card contains a wealth of information ready to be deciphered by the visitor. A third element of this body of work which is presented in STUK, is the video. It shows the manipulated image of the participants of the conferences, as if they were taking part in a seance.

Together, HEXEN 2.0 offers an alternative view on recent history, embracing its complexity and ambiguity. With the Macy conferences and the emergence of cybernetics as its focal point, it lays bare unexpected links and connections between seemingly opposite forms of knowledge and societal groupings; from science to new age, from military research to hippie culture, from magic to technology. It offers a hotchpotch and mixture of logical and irrational connections that emerge in man’s quest to understand and control the human mind.

N Witches Cradles is een hedendaagse herinterpretatie van het historische ‘heksen wiegen’, een straf die mensen verdacht van hekserij tijdens de inquisitie toebedeeld kregen. In STUK nodigt Center for Tactical Magic je uit om plaats te nemen in één van de ‘cradles’ die de vorm heeft van een zogenaamde ‘sterrenkamer’. Dat verwijst naar de magische origine van de techniek, het embleem van de staatsmacht en de kosmische zoektocht naar licht in de duisternis. De toeschouwer neemt in het centrale pentagon plaats waarop de ‘sterrenkamer’ wordt gesloten. Het geheel wordt van de grond geheven en de wieg begint zachtjes heen en weer te bewegen.

De zintuiglijke desoriëntatie zou een hallucinerend effect hebben.

Sjamanen, derwisjen en alternatieve geneesheren gebruiken die techniek nog steeds om in hogere sferen te komen.

E Witches Cradles is a contemporary reinterpretation of the historical practice of placing people, accused of witchcraft, in cradles to swing them from one side to the other. In STUK, Center for Tactical Magic invites you to take place in one of the ‘cradles’ which is shaped as a ‘star chamber’. This evokes its magical origins, the emblem of state power and a cosmic source of light amidst darkness. The participant takes place in the central pentagon of the ‘star chamber’. The cradle gets lifted in the air and starts to swing softly from one side to the other. The confusion of senses is thought to induce hallucinatory experiences that can lead to altered states of consciousness, much like those sought by shamans, dervishes and alternative doctors.

N In de film Night Soil #1/ Fake Paradise introduceert de Nederlandse kunstenares Melanie Bonajo het Ayahuascaritueel, dat in oorsprong afstamt van oude Amazonetradities. Tijdens een ceremonie drinken deelnemers onder begeleiding van een sjamaan een psychedelische mix van verschillende plantenextracten en bereiken daardoor een andere staat van bewustzijn. Bonajo onderzoekt verder de invloed van die alternatieve staten van zijn op de sociale, politieke en religieuze samenleving en stelt vast dat Ayahuasca wel eens hetzelfde effect zou kunnen hebben op de hedendaagse samenleving als LSD in de jaren 60.

Night Soil #1/ Fake Paradise is de eerste film in de trilogie Night Soil, een serie experimentele films in semidocumentaire stijl die ingaan tegen de lineaire vooruitgang van het kapitalistisch systeem. E In the film Night Soil #1/ Fake Paradise by Dutch artist Melanie Bonajo, the viewer is introduced to the ritual of Ayahuasca, which originally springs from ancient Amazon traditions. During a ceremony, a psychedelic brew made of various plant infusions is consumed under the guidance of a shaman. Participants enter an altered state of consciousness. Bonajo further explores the influence of alternate states of consciousness on a social, political and religious society and states that Ayahuasca could have the same effect on our contemporary society as LSD had in the sixties. Night Soil #1/ Fake Paradise is the first film of the trilogy Night Soil, a series of experimental semi-documentary films about cultural phenomena that contradict the linear progression of the capitalist system. Each film explores trends that move outside the sociological and political norms of consumer society, most of them illegal. Night Soil #2/ Economy of Love and Night Soil #3/ Nocturnal Gardening complete the series.

N In de film en sculpturale installatie Every Angle is an Angel en Every Cell is a Bell ontmoeten we Cynthia, het alter ego van de Amerikaanse kunstenares Shana Moulton. Cynthia is een wanhopig onzekere vrouw die zich, in een permanente zoektocht naar zelfverbetering, op allerlei alternatieve remedies en medicatie stort. In beide werken wandel je als kijker een wereld binnen vol psychedelische kleuren, kitscherige objecten en goedkope symboliek. Via haar alter ego, keurt Moulton de drang naar perfectie af die onze samenleving en onze mindset domineert. Met veel gevoel voor humor en zelfrelativering kaart ze op kritische wijze aan hoe de eeuwenoude menselijke zoektocht naar spirituele en lichamelijke gezondheid ingehaald worden door lifestyleconsumentisme, gaande van de nieuwste mythes en hypes op vlak van gezond eten tot typische newagekwakzalverij.

De titels van de werken verwijzen naar het boek Journeys into the Bright World (1978), waarin auteur Marcia Moore haar persoonlijke, therapeutische ervaringen met de drug ketamine beschrijft.

E In the film and sculptural installation Every Angle is an Angel and Every Cell is a Bell, we meet the artist Shana Moulton as her alter ego Cynthia. Cynthia is a fragile woman that yearns for self-improvement.

In order to fulfill her need, she starts using alternative remedies and medicines. In both works the viewer enters a world where colours, objects, symbols and goods have control. Through her alter ego, Moulton denounces the need for perfection and improvement that controls our society and mindset, questions alternative health systems for body and mind, and critically addresses New Age spirituality, tv esoterism and the contemporary health craze.

The titles of the work are quotes of personal accounts from Journeys into the Bright World (1978), a book by Marcia Moore who chronicled her mind- and body-altering, therapeutical experiences with the drug ketamine.

N In het werk Mirror Pieces speelt Tim Etchells in verschillende set-ups met de woorden ‘optical illusions, political delusions, poetical confusions’. Zonder de betekenis vast te willen leggen, daagt Etchells de bezoeker uit om na te denken over de mogelijke relaties tussen de woorden in de context waarin het werk gepresenteerd wordt: de tentoonstelling en de bredere samenleving. In The Act of Magic introduceert zijn werk een verschuiving van het gebruik van het instrumentarium van de magiër om goedaardige illusies te creëren naar het toepassen van dezelfde methodes om te misleiden en te manipuleren in een poging macht en controle te verwerven.

De neonsculpturen van Tim Etchells gaan terug op zijn fascinatie als kunstenaar, schrijver en performer voor taal en haar tegenstrijdige aspecten; enerzijds de snelheid, helderheid en levendigheid waarmee het verhaallijnen, beelden en ideeën kan overbrengen en anderzijds haar verbazende neiging om steeds opnieuw een veld vol onzekerheid en ambiguïteit te creëren.

Magic and the Military CIA MANUAL OF TRICKERY AND DECEPTION, 2009 THE GHOST ARMY, 2013 LEVITATING THE PENTAGON, 1967 N Verschillende vormen van magie werden in het verleden binnengebracht in het militaire / politieke complex. In STUK geeft een documentatieruimte inzicht in de wijze waarop magie rechtstreeks werd gebruikt in militaire context.

De CIA betaalde op het hoogtepunt van de Koude Oorlog $3,000 aan de bekende goochelaar John Mulholland om een handleiding te schrijven over misleiding, de kunst van het verbergen en theatertechniek.

Alle gekende kopieën werden vernietigd, zo dacht men, tot ze opnieuw boven water kwamen. Ze werden heruitgegeven als The Official CIA Manual of Trickery and Deception. De handleiding behandelt onderwerpen als het hanteren van pilletjes, poeders en vloeibare stoffen, maar ook ‘het heimelijk laten verdwijnen van objecten door vrouwen’ en ‘speciale aspecten van misleiding door vrouwen’. Dit was niet Mulhollands eerste bijdrage voor het vaderland. Tijdens de Tweede Wereldoorlog werd zijn bekende publicatie The Art of Illusion als pocket onder de Amerikaanse soldaten verdeeld als entertainment en om de moraal van de soldaten op te krikken. Maar het verschil tussen beide publicaties is essentieel: zoals Jonathan Allen in zijn artikel Deceptionists at War (Cabinet, Issue 26, Summer 2007) aangeeft, kan je Mulhollands ambivalente verhouding tot de CIA aflezen uit de titels van de publicaties ‘between the art of illusion, and the art of deception. Illusion, with its Latin roots in ludere, to play, suggests cooperation within the ethics of the encounter between audience and magician, a ‘willful play of confidences between viewer and spectacle.’ Deception however, drawn from decipere, to ensnare or cheat, suggests a will to prevail, a more divisive exchange, and one with potentially lethal stakes.’

Mulholland was trouwens niet de eerste of enige magiër die ingeschakeld werd door de overheid. Zo spioneerde Harry Houdini voor Scotland Yard bij het Russische en Duitse leger en maakte goochelaar Jasper Maskelyne valse onderzeeërs en tanks om tijdens de WOII het Duitse leger onder leiding van Erwin Rommel te misleiden.

Daarnaast vind je in deze ruimte ook de PBS-documentaire The Ghost Army die het verhaal vertelt van het 23ste regiment van de Amerikaanse speciale troepen. Zij gebruikten visuele trucs zoals opblaasbare tanks, geluidsfragmenten en valse radiotransmissies in uitgebreide illusies die

de vijand moesten misleiden. De mannen die deel uitmaakten van die divisie werden gerekruteerd uit kunstscholen en -academies en ingehuurd voor hun creativiteit en acteertalent. Onder hen bevonden zich onder andere de beeldhouwer Ellsworth Kelly en modeontwerper Bill Blass.

Hun missie begon kort na D-Day en eindigde in de Rijnvallei. Officiële documenten laten uitschijnen dat de divisie een twintigtal grootschalige illusies opzette waarmee ze duizenden levens wist te redden. The Ghost Army werd geschreven en geregisseerd door Rick Beyer en geproduceerd door Plate of Peas Productions.

Maar ook in het protest tegen militaire acties werd magie ingezet. Abbie Hoffman, Allen Ginsberg en Ed Sanders van de muziekgroep The Fugs ontwikkelden in 1967 een ritueel als protest tegen de Vietnam Oorlog: Levitating the Pentagon. Op 21 oktober 1967 organiseerden ze een uitdrijvingsritueel voor het Pentagon waaraan duizenden protesteerders deelnamen. De absurditeit van de actie omvatte zelfs het aanvragen van de toestemming hiervoor bij de autoriteiten. Uiteindelijk werd deze verleend, al mocht het Pentagon slechts ± 90cm (3 feet) opstijgen in plaats van de aangevraagde ± 90m (300 feet). Met hun actie verbonden de organisatoren een creatieve happening met een politieke doelstelling in een magisch ritueel en wisten ze handig gebruik te maken van de massamedia om hun standpunt te verkondigen. Ze gebruikten met andere woorden innovatieve strategieën van sociale actie om de parameters van het debat over de Vietnamoorlog te beïnvloeden. In zoverre dat die strategieën teruggrepen op ‘geheime’ inzichten in het functioneren van de sociale realiteit, werden ze gezien als ‘magisch’ en in lijn met de pre-moderne esoterische tradities. Het nieuwe links bediende zich van die tactieken uit diepe frustratie met de traditionele vormen van democratisch politiek engagement.

E The direct relation between stage magicians and the military / political complex has been researched to great length. A documentary space in STUK allows the visitor to explore the myriad of ways in which magic has penetrated the military.

At the height of the Cold War, the Central Intelligence Agency paid $3,000 to renowned magician John Mulholland to write a manual on misdirection, concealment, and stagecraft. All known copies of the document were believed to be destroyed in 1973. But the manuals resurfaced, and have been republished as The Official CIA Manual of Trickery and Deception. Topics include the handling of tablets, powders and liquids, as well as ‘surreptitious removal of objects by women’ and ‘special aspects of deception for women’. This manuscript wasn’t Mulhollands’ first contribution to his native country. In 1944 his book The

Art of Illusion was distributed among soldiers for their entertainment and to boost their moral. However, the difference between both contributions is important to note. As Jonathan Allen states in his article Deceptionists at War, Mulholland’s ambivalence about his involvement with the CIA can be deduced from the titles of his publications, ‘between the art of illusion, and the art of deception. Illusion, with its Latin roots in ludere, to play, suggests cooperation within the ethics of the encounter between audience and magician, a ‘willful play of confidences between viewer and spectacle.’ Deception however, drawn from decipere, to ensnare or cheat, suggests a will to prevail, a more divisive exchange, and one with potentially lethal stakes.’

Mulholland was, by the way, not the first magician to work for his government. Harry Houdini spied on Russian and German military for Scotland Yard and Jasper Maskelyne created fake tanks and submarines to deceive the German troops during the Second World War.

Also presented in this space is the PBS Documentary The Ghost Army which narrates the story of the U.S. 23rd Headquarters Special Troops who used visual decoys, sonic deception and fake radio transmissions to set up elaborate battlefield illusions. The men who participated were recruited from art schools and agencies and were hired for their acting skills. Artists like Ellsworth Kelly and Bill Blass played a role in this very specific unit. The unit was formed in 1944. Their mission began shortly after D-Day and ended in the Rhine River valley. Official documents states that the men staged up to twenty battlefield deceptions. With these they saved thousands of soldiers’ lives. The Ghost Army was written and directed by Rick Beyer and produced by Plate of Peas Productions.

In turn, Abbie Hoffman, Allen Ginsberg and Ed Sanders of the band The Fugs resorted to the magical, designing a ritual in protest of the Vietnam War: Levitating the Pentagon. On October 21, 1967 they organised an ‘exorcism’ of the Pentagon in which several thousand demonstrators participated. The action’s absurdism extended even to the process of securing a permit beforehand; the authorities finally agreed to allow the Pentagon to be elevated three feet in the air, down from the 300 feet that organizers had initially requested. With their action, the organisers merged a creative ‘happening’ with political intent, the engagement of ritual towards political ends and the blatant usurpation of corporate media techniques in service of a movement. They used innovative strategies of social action to alter the terms of debate regarding the Vietnam War. Inasmuch as these strategies drew on ‘secret’ insights into the nature of social reality, they were seen as ‘magical’ and in continuity with pre-modern esoteric traditions. The new left turned to such tactics out of deep frustration with traditional forms of democratic political engagement.

N Twenty-First-Century Silks is een video-installatie waarin Jonathan Allen de culturele geschiedenis van magie en haar weerklank op de politieke context onder de loep neemt. Hij roept met dit werk een periode op in ‘stage magic’ waarin trucs met felgekleurde zijden sjaaltjes en vlaggen veelvuldig gebruikt werden in vaudevilleperformances.

Het werk toont twee handen die uit het donker verschijnen en zijden sjaaltjes hanteren. De sjaaltjes ontvouwen zich en onthullen iconen uit de populaire cultuur en cryptische naamwoorden zoals ‘Faith’, ‘Fear’ en ‘War’. Door de opeenvolging en herhaling van die beelden daagt Allen de kijker uit om betekenis te genereren uit losse fragmenten.

E Twenty-First-Century Silks is a video installation in which Jonathan Allen explores the cultural history of secular magic and its resonances within the political realm. In this work, Allen recalls an era of stage magic when conjuring acts with brightly coloured silk handkerchiefs and flags were commonplace in vaudeville performance. Two hands emerge from darkness to perform with magician’s silks. The silks unfurl in tantalising slow motion to reveal popular icons and abstract nouns such as ‘Faith’, ‘Fear’ and ‘War’. By sequencing and looping these inscrutable communications, Allen encourages — and exposes — the viewer’s tendency to construe meaning from unrelated fragments.

N Voordat de Minister van Financiën in Groot-Brittannië de jaarlijkse begroting toelicht in het parlement voert hij een ritueel uit. Hij verlaat zijn officiële residentie in Downing Street 11 met een rode ‘budget box’ en toont die aan de aanwezige pers. De rode aktetas bevat de Britse ministeriële documenten die omlijnd zijn met lood. Dat randje moest ervoor zorgen dat de aktetas overboord kon worden gegooid en zou zinken in geval van een overval. De rode ‘budget box’ werd voor het eerst gebruikt in 1860 door de Britse kanselier William Gladstone.

In hun nieuw werk Gladiator recreëren Hollington & Kyprianou dat ritueel, zoals uitgevoerd in 2011 door ex-kanselier George Osborne, in een installatie die digitale compositie combineert met een theatertechniek die gebruik maakt van reflecties in glas, gekend als ‘Pepper’s Ghost’. Op één scherm wordt het ritueel herleid tot enkel de rode koffer die lijkt te zweven als in een levitatietruc. Op het tweede scherm is de koffer verwijderd en zien we enkel de kanselier in al zijn expressiviteit. Zijn uitgestoken vuist doet denken aan een Romeinse keizer die op het punt staat te beslissen over het lot van een gladiator, of aan een goochelaar die een munt uit zijn mouw tevoorschijn zal toveren.

E The British government’s head finance minister — known as the Chancellor of the Exchequer — performs a ritual before delivering his yearly financial statement to parliament. He leaves his official residence, Number 11, Downing Street, with a red ‘budget box’ and displays it to the waiting press. These red governmental briefcases contain British ministerial papers and are lined with lead, once meant to ensure that the box sank when thrown overboard in the event of capture. The red ‘budget box’ was first used in 1860, by Britain’s then Chancellor of the Exchequer, William Gladstone.

Hollington & Kyprianou’s Gladiator reworks the ritual as performed in 2011 by the ex-Chancellor George Osborne in an installation that combines digital compositing with a theatrical illusion that uses reflections in glass, a technique known as ‘Pepper’s Ghost’. On one screen, the ritual is reduced to just the box itself, coming across as a levitating parlour trick. On the second screen, the box is removed and the Chancellor is digitally filled in, refocusing on the Chancellor’s expressions and movements. His raised fist echoes both a Roman emperor about to decide the fate of a gladiator and a magician appearing a penny from his sleeve.

N In Stand Behind Me liet Liz Magic Laser danser Ariel Freedman de lichaamstaal van verschillende internationale politici en hun speeches uit 2013 instuderen en opnieuw opvoeren. De film toont hoe Freedman met de rug naar het publiek plaatsneemt en richting de camera kijkt. Het publiek wordt zo de backdrop voor de performance. Een autocue geeft het script van elke speech die uitgebeeld wordt weer. De performances vonden plaats in Lisson Gallery, in Wiels, Brussel voor ExperienZ en in het National Palace of Culture, Sofia, voor Sofia Contemporary.

In STUK wordt de video-installatie van de performance in Lisson Gallery getoond. Politici worden stage magicians, hun lichaamstaal en speech gericht op het verkopen van illusies aan het publiek.

Voor Stand Behind Me, net zoals voor Digital Face (2012), ­bestudeerde Liz Magic Laser de effecten van lichaamstaal en bracht ze hedendaagse praktijken in verband met het werk van François Delsarte.

Die 19e eeuwse Franse musicus en leraar ontwikkelde een acteerstijl waarin de emotionele ervaringen van de acteur gekoppeld werden aan een set gesystematiseerde poses en bewegingen. De Delsartemethode werd herhaaldelijk verkeerd geïnterpreteerd en verviel in melodramatisch poseren.

E For Stand Behind Me, Liz Magic Laser worked with dancer Ariel Freedman to adapt oratorical gestures from 2013 speeches made by an international range of politicians. The performer turns her back to the audience to face a video camera that transmits a live-feed projection in which the audience becomes the backdrop. A teleprompter displays the script delivered by each politician being mimicked. Performances took place at the Lisson Gallery, at Wiels, Brussels, for ExperienZ and at the National Palace of Culture, Sofia, for Sofia Contemporary.

In STUK, the video installation of the performance at Lisson Gallery is shown. Politicians are presented as stage magicians, using body language and speech to sell their illusions to the public.

Stand Behind Me, together with Digital Face (2012) are works for which Liz Magic Laser studied the effects of the gestural, linking contemporary practices to the methods of François Delsarte. This 19th century French musician and teacher developed an acting style that attempted to connect the inner emotional experience of the actor to a systematized set of gestures and movements. The Delsarte method was subsequently widely misinterpreted and devolved into melodramatic posing.

N In Universal Keys, een installatie die Center for Tactical Magic creëerde voor Artefact: The Act of Magic, hangen vijfduizend universele handboeisleutels in een formatie die de optische illusie oproept van twee in elkaar gehaakte ringen. Bezoekers worden uitgenodigd om een sleutel voor persoonlijk gebruik mee te nemen.

Aaron Gach, oprichter van het Center for Tactical Magic, licht toe: ‘Misschien is het de illusie van controle en bevrijding die leidde tot het succes van de ontsnappingstrucs zoals we die kennen van Houdini en andere goochelaars. In escapologie, of de kunst van zelfbevrijding, (…) is de illusie om een onoverkomelijke beperking te overwinnen de kern van de performance. Hoewel Houdini verschillende ontsnappingstrucs had, blijven de trucs met handboeien het meest populair bij een publiek dat een eigen vorm van catharsis zoekt van autoritaire controle. Terwijl het gratis uitdelen van universele handboeisleuteltjes de mogelijkheid opwerpt van een publiek dat volledig vrij is, suggereert de illusoire kwaliteit van de installatie dat het misschien wel meer vereist dan een sleutel om los te komen van biopolitieke controlemechanismen afkomstig van klassentegenstellingen die velen tot crimineel bestempelen in de eerste plaats. Bezoekers een eigen handboeisleuteltje geven, nodigt de mogelijkheid tot zelfbevrijding uit.

Hoewel het volledig legaal is zo’n sleuteltje aan te kopen, te bezitten en bij te hebben, lokt het zeker en vast nauwkeurig onderzoek uit.

Terwijl sommigen zullen beweren dat het criminelen toelaat te ontsnappen, zullen anderen blijven benadrukken dat het volk op regelmatige basis gecriminaliseerd wordt, maar de sleutels tot zelfbevrijding zelf in handen heeft.

Op gelijkaardige wijze worden begrippen als beveiliging en bedreiging gelinkt aan een collectief verlangen naar vrijheid en veiligheid, alsof ze twee delen van eenzelfde illusie zijn. Geeft het bezit van een universele sleutel werkelijk een machtiging? Of maakt het simpelweg de materiële kracht en zwaktes van staatsmacht zichtbaar? In welke context zou een dergelijk sleuteltje nieuwe mogelijkheden openen om machtsrelaties te begrijpen? Uiteindelijk kunnen deze vragen enkel beantwoord worden door hij / zij die de sleutel in handen heeft.’

E In Universal Keys, an installation especially made for Artefact: The Act of Magic, five thousand ‘universal’ handcuff keys hang on a wall in a formation that creates an optical illusion of two interlocking links. Visitors are invited to take a key for personal use. Aaron Gach, founder of the Center for Tactical Magic, explains: ‘Perhaps it is the illusion of control and liberation that first gave rise to the escape acts popularized by Houdini and other magicians. In escapology, or the art of self-liberation, (…) the illusion of overcoming an insurmountable restriction is at the core of the performance. Although Houdini performed numerous escapes from a variety of restraints, handcuff escapes continue to appeal to audiences seeking their own cathartic release from authoritarian control.

While the free public distribution of universal handcuff keys may suggest the potential for a public that is universally free, the illusory quality of the installation equally suggests that it may take more than a key to break free from the biopolitical controls that stem from the class contradictions that criminalize many in the first place. Offering visitors their own handcuff key invites the potential for accomplishing their own self-liberation. Although it is completely legal to purchase, own, and carry a handcuff key in most countries, possession of such a key is also sure to invite scrutiny. While some will assert that it will allow criminals the ability to escape, others will insist that people at large have been routinely criminalized yet possess the keys to their own liberation.

Similarly, notions of security and threat are seen as linked to our collective desires for freedom and safety as they form two parts of the same illusion. Does possession of a universal key truly enable the beholder? Or, does it simply make visible the material strengths and weaknesses of state power? In what context might such a key open up new possibilities for understanding power relations? Ultimately, these are questions to be answered by those who hold the keys.’

E The Center for Tactical Magic ‘s film Linking & Unlinking visually relates magical escape tricks to real-life situations of contraption. It was initially designed as a single-channel video for a NYC billboard. The work combines three different source materials: found footage demonstrating how to pick a pair of handcuffs; found footage of professional and amateur magicians performing the classic magic trick, ‘the linking rings’ (a.k.a. ‘ninja rings’); and a rolling text of ‘Know Your Rights’ information from the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU). Combining practical know-how, legal guidance, and a magical performance, Linking & Unlinking simultaneously — and somewhat paradoxically — serves as a public service announcement, a DIY course in self-liberation, and a fascination with the competing illusions of liberty and law.

N Voor Zero Magic bestudeerde het Zweedse kunstenaarsduo Goldin+Senneby de economische en financiële wereld. Ze infiltreerden in een geheim hefboomfonds in de Verenigde Staten en recreëerden de ‘short selling’ praktijken (nl. het verkopen van aandelen die je niet bezit). In samenwerking met de magiër Malin Nilsson en de financiële socioloog Théo Bourgeron ontwikkelden ze een magische truc voor de financiële markten die de capaciteit heeft om de waargenomen waarde van een bedrijf of een aandeel te ondermijnen en winst te maken. E For Zero Magic, the Swedish artist duo Goldin+Senneby studied the economic and financial world to master its strategies. They infiltrated a secretive hedge fund in the US and recreated its short selling practices (i.e. the practice of selling shares that one does not own). In collaboration with the magician Malin Nilsson and finance sociologist Théo Bourgeron, they developed a magic trick for the financial markets that has the capacity to undermine the perceived value of a publicly traded company and to profit from this. The magic box in Zero Magic contains the props and equipment needed to perform these financial manipulations as well as historical references to other controversial magic tricks performed offstage, in real life.

N In dit werk van Femke Herregraven staan de financiële markten en specifiek de praktijk van high frequency trading centraal.

Herregraven geeft die ultrasnelle financiële transacties een materiële vorm en fysieke aanwezigheid. De high tech gegraveerde metalen sticks in Rogue Waves geven een digitale momentopname weer van een specifiek voorval waarin een algoritme illegaal financiële markten manipuleerde. Qua vorm refereren ze aan de zogenaamde tally sticks, historische objecten die vroeger gebruikt werden om financiële transacties bij te houden door inkervingen te maken in stokken. Zo verbindt Herregraven in haar sculpturen het nieuwe en het oude, en zinspeelt op poëtische wijze op de reële impact die vluchtige, onzichtbare en irreële fenomenen in de beurswereld kunnen veroorzaken.

E Financial markets and more specifically the practice of high frequency trading are the subject of the work Femke Herregraven presents in the context of Artefact. Herregraven gives these ultrafast financial transactions of computational trading a material form and physical presence.

The high tech engraved metal sticks of Rogue Waves represent a specific instance in which an algorithm illegally manipulated financial markets through quote stuffing, spoofing gold prices and stock manipulation. Its shape reminds us of tally sticks, ancient objects used to record value and transactions. Herregraven connects in that way the old and the new in her scultpures. She poetically alludes to the real impact of ephemeral, invisible and irrational phenomena in the financial world.

N Subsecond Flocks onderzoekt supersnelle financiële events waarin een algoritme een ritueel uitoefent, getriggerd door emoties op sociale netwerksites. Zo zorgde een valse tweet op de gehackte account van Associated Press ‘Two Explosions in the White House and Barack Obama is injured’ voor een gigantische ‘crash’ op de beurzen. In minder dan 2 minuten tijd, ging 135,8 biljoen dollar in rook op.

Met dit werk tracht Herregraven dergelijke evenementen te vatten in een materiële en fysieke vorm door de creatie van fictieve financiële artefacten die bestaan uit een onderling gelinkt systeem van symbolische elementen in een gesloten omgeving, een soort van machine ecologie of ecosysteem. Zo functioneren ze als materieel bewijs voor de symbiose tussen menselijke paniek en geautomatiseerde mathematische rituelen.

E Subsecond Flocks explores extreme ultrafast financial events in which algorithms execute rituals, triggered by human emotions on social network sites. As such, a hoax tweet on the hacked Associated Press account mentioning ‘Two Explosions in the White House and Barack Obama is injured’ triggered a gigantic ‘crash’. In less than 2 minutes time, $135,8 billion was wiped of the market.

With her work, Femke Herregraven attempts to grasp these events in a material and physical way by creating fictional financial artefacts. The artefacts consists of an interconnected system of elements in a closed of space representing a machine ecology / ecosystem. They function as material evidence of the subsecond symbiose between human panic and automated mathematical rituals.

N Het Franse collectief RYBN.org presenteert Dataghost 2, een werk dat de rationaliteit van technologische systemen bevraagt.

Dataghost 2 is een introspectieve, recursieve en kabbalistische computermachine. Ze bestudeert continu elk geschreven bewijs van haar eigen interne activiteit, de logs. De activatie van die logs geeft aanleiding tot een reeks commando’s die krampachtig worden uitgevoerd.

De machine genereert en ontwerpt fragmenten code volgens de oude hermeneutische traditie van de kabbalah: de gematria. Hierbij worden alfanumerische transformaties, associaties en tekstvervangingen uitgevoerd om de verschillende soorten logs te interpreteren.

Doorheen dat proces worden miljoenen commando’s gegenereerd, de meeste incoherent of non-functioneel. Maar soms, en zelfs ondanks hun esoterische syntax, slagen bepaalde commando’s erin uitgevoerd te worden: de performatieve dimensie van de computertaal komt tot leven. De machine creëert zijn eigen digitale Golem.

Het ritueel brengt de machine echter in gevaar. De uit te voeren commando’s kunnen de geheugencapaciteit van de computer verzadigen, een definitieve crash veroorzaken in de software, of verschillende kritische limieten overschrijden wat resulteert in het oververhitten van de elektronische componenten of de vernietiging van fysieke onderdelen.

Die zelfdestructieve activiteit wordt onthuld door de continue print van alle verschillende commando’s in de tentoonstellingsruimte tot het systeem definitief en onvermijdelijk zichzelf uitschakelt.

E French collective RYBN.org present Dataghost 2, a work which questions the rationality of technology systems. Dataghost 2 is an introspective, recursive and kabbalistic computational machine. It tirelessly studies every single written trace of its internal activity, the logs. The exegesis of those logs gives form to a series of compulsive commands, which are frenetically executed. The machine generates and shapes fragments of codes following the ancient hermeneutic techniques of kabbalah, the Gematria. It operates by alpha-numerical transformations, associations and substitutions of signs, to interpret the different kinds of logs (of the dameons, the kernel, the network, the authorisations, etc.), generating in the process millions of shell commands, mostly incoherent or nonfunctional.

However, from time to time, and despite of their heretical syntax, certain of the generated tasks manage to be executed. It is the

performative dimension of the computational language that comes to life in their execution. At this precise moment, the machine achieves the invocation ritual of a digital Golem.

The ritual puts the machine at risk, as the executed commands might saturate the memory capacity of the machine, provoke a definitive stop within the software layer, or overpass several critical limits which results in an overheating of certain electronic components, or lead to the destruction of parts of its physical layers.

This self-destructive activity is revealed by the continuous print of all the different commands in the exhibition space, until the definitive and inevitable stop of the system.

GHOST IN THE CELL, 2015 BCL

N In Ghost in the Cell, een installatie van het kunstenaarscollectief BCL (Georg Tremmel & Shiho Fukuhara), functioneren levende hartcellen als pars pro toto voor het idee van de creatie van een fysieke versie van het populaire Japanse digitale personage Hatsune Miku.

Dat virtueel idool ontstond als de synthetische stem van een computerprogramma en groeide dankzij haar immense populariteit uit tot een personage dat een belangrijke rol speelt in de Japanse populaire en sociale cultuur. Als semi-levende entiteit vervaagt ze de ruimte tussen fysiek en virtueel idool.

In Ghost in the Cell wordt Hatsune Miku’s reÍle, levende lichaam weergegeven door een kloppend hart, dat op zijn beurt gerepresenteerd is door levende hartcellen. BCL nodigde het publiek uit om een synthetisch genoom van Hatsune Miku samen te stellen op basis van het gemiddelde Japanse vrouwelijke genoom. Uit dat synthetisch genoom werden relevante elementen biologisch gesynthetiseerd en ingebracht in menselijke (multipotente) stamcellen, die tot slot ontwikkeld werden tot cardiomyocyten of hartcellen.

E In Ghost in the Cell, an installation by the artist collective BCL (Georg Tremmel & Shiho Fukuhara), living heart cells function as a pars pro toto for the idea of the creation of a physical version of the popular Japanese character Hatsune Miku. This virtual idol made her debut in the form of a voice synthesis computer program and through her immense popularity started to play an important role in Japanese popular and social culture. As a mass-mediated, semi living entity, she blurs the space between flesh and virtual idols.

In Ghost in the Cell, Hatsune Miku’s real, living body is represented by a beating heart, which itself is represented by beating heart cells. The artist collective BCL invited the public to create and edit a synthetic genome of Hatsune Miku based on an average Japanese female genome. From this synthetic genome some relevant parts were biologically synthesised and inserted into human iPS cells, which were then differentiated into cardiomyocytes (heart cells).

N Jonathan Allens neonsculptuur Magic Shop suggereert een verhouding tussen de persuasieve kracht van commerciële reclame en de capaciteit van magie om — in de woorden van de kunstenaar — ‘tot instemming te bezweren’. In The Act of Magic vindt dit werk zijn plaats in verhouding tot kunstwerken die de ambigue relatie tussen magie en technologie in vraag stellen. E Jonathan Allen’s neon sculpture Magic Shop suggests a relationship between the persuasive power of commercial advertising and – in the artist’s words – magic’s capacity to ‘conjure consent’. In The Act of Magic the work is positioned in relation to artworks that focus on the ambiguous relationship between magic and technology. In a world where consumer electronics have become so complex we can hardly understand them, and where they seemingly have acquired magical properties due to their networked and / or automated functioning, the question remains what ‘magic’ exactly one buys into when purchasing these goods.

N Met The Finite State Fantasia creëerde de Britse kunstenaar en ontwerper Tobias Revell een immersieve installatie waarin een onzichtbare, intelligente machine een poging doet om de tentoonstellingsruimte in kaart te brengen. In The Finite State Fantasia scant een robot de galerijruimte. De machine beweegt hevig heen en weer, gebruikt sensoren om de afstanden te meten en botst op obstakels (bezoekers) in zijn poging om de ruimte in kaart te brengen. Maar de machine is onzichtbaar, een simulatie. Als bezoeker nemen we enkel een vertaling van de ‘zintuigen’ van de machine waar; de flikkerende infraroodsporen en ultrasonische plaatsbepalers geprojecteerd op de muren van de tentoonstellingsruimte. In The Finite State Fantasia wordt de dissonantie getoond tussen de ‘magie’ van de technologie en de technologische realiteit. De installatie verklapt hoe het werkt, maar visualiseert en herinterpreteert tegelijkertijd de schijnbaar bovennatuurlijke ‘zintuigen’ van de machine.

E In The Finite State Fantasia, British artist and designer Tobias Revell creates an immersive installation visualizing the space mapping behaviour of an intelligent, but invisible, machine. In The Finite State Fantasia a mapping robot is installed in the gallery. The machine moves erratically, using its sensors to measure distance and bumping into obstacles to build a model of the space. However, the machine is actually invisible, a simulation. Instead of seeing the machine as a discrete object from the outside, visitors are presented with a representation of its senses; its flickering infrared trails and ultrasonic locators.

Projected on the walls of the space is the machine’s own perception of its environment. The Finite State Fantasia draws out the dissonance between the ‘magic’ of technology and the technical reality by showing us how the trick is done while simultaneously re-representing the seemingly supernatural machine sensorium.

N Deep are the Woods is een veertig minuten durende performance van de Franse kunstenaar Eric Arnal-Burtschy. Arnal-Burtschy nodigt je uit in een immersieve setting waar hij, aan de hand van licht en rook, verschillende ruimtelijke illusies creëert die rechtstreeks op je inwerken. Als een kathedraal zonder muren daagt het de toeschouwer uit om via het immateriële karakter van het licht zijn / haar perceptie van de wereld uit te breiden. Tegelijkertijd is Deep are the Woods ook een bijzondere fysieke ervaring waarin het licht als materialiteit het lichaam omhult en streelt tot je het kan aanraken met je vingertoppen.

Inspiratie voor dit werk vond Arnal-Burtschy onder andere in onze ervaring van de natuur. Natuurlijke lichtverschijnselen zoals de zon aan de horizon of het licht dat door de bladeren schijnt lagen aan de basis van deze verbluffende creatie.

E Deep are the Woods is a 40-minute performance of the French artist Eric Arnal-Burtschy. Arnal-Burtschy invites you to take place in an immersive setting in which he creates different spatial illusions using light and smoke. As a cathedral without walls, the installation challenges you to broaden your perspective on the world through the immaterial character of the light. Deep are the Woods is also a physical environment in which the material of light touches and caresses you. A magical experience.

For this work, Eric Arnal-Burtschy was inspired by our relation to nature. Natural light phenomena such as the sun on the horizon or light shining through the leaves of a tree, were the starting points for the development of this astonishing performance.

Op expressieve wijze roepen de dansers de herinnering op van samen dansen en menselijk contact. Hun bewegingen zijn schatplichtig aan de traditie van het cirkeldansen. Een imposant lichtobject onthult flarden van een gemeenschap die ooit verbonden was.

E In Ah! Oh! A contemporary ritual, the dancers find themselves in a post-apocalyptic world. Or is it a Berlin nightclub? Through expressive movements, they try to locate themselves by evoking memories of dancing together and human contact. Their movements play with the tradition of the circle dance, while an imposing lighting design reveals fragments of a community that was once connected.

In de performance / goochelshow Trylologi [Magicology] worden magie en psychologie samengebracht. Psychologe Frederikke Tholander en goochelaar David Tholander gebruiken magie om de werking van menselijke perceptie en cognitie uit de doeken te doen. De performance is gebaseerd op wetenschappelijk onderzoek, optische illusies en goocheltrucs. De trucs van de goochelaar worden niet onthuld maar samen met het publiek onderzoeken David en Frederikke welke achterpoortjes in het menselijk brein een goochelaar gebruikt om te verbazen, te verrassen en te entertainen.

E A magician never reveals his secrets. A psychologist reveals the secrets of the human brain. Trylologi [Magicology] is a hybrid of magic and psychology, where psychologist Frederikke Tholander and magician David Tholander use magic to illustrate how human perception and cognition work, and how this affects human behavior. It is a talk based on scientific research, optical illusions and live magic performance pieces. The magician’s secrets are not revealed, but together we explore which of the brain’s hidden assistants and trapdoors, the magician uses to astonish, surprise and entertain.

N An Honest Liar is een documentaire over de wereldbekende magiër, ‘escape artist’ en vijand van de misleiding James ‘The Amazing’ Randi. De film vertelt het relaas van Randi’s uitgebreide onderzoeken die leidden tot het publiekelijk ontmaskeren van psychics, gebedsgenezers en con artists, en dat met quasi-religieuze inzet. Als meester-misleider creëerde hij fictieve personages, valse psychics en toverde hij zelfs zijn partner sinds 25 jaar, de kunstenaar Jose Alvarez, om tot de sham guru ‘Carlos’. Maar wanneer een schokkende onthulling in Randi’s persoonlijke leven wordt ontdekt, is het niet langer duidelijk of Randi de misleider is, of misleid werd.

E An Honest Liar is a feature documentary about the world-famous magician, escape artist, and world-renowned enemy of deception, James ‘The Amazing’ Randi. The film brings to life Randi’s intricate investigations that publicly exposed psychics, faith healers, and con-artists with quasi-religious fervor. A master deceiver who came out of the closet at the age of 81, Randi created fictional characters, fake psychics, and even turned his partner of 25 years, the artist Jose Alvarez, into a sham guru named Carlos. But when a shocking revelation in Randi’s personal life is discovered, it isn’t clear whether Randi is still the deceiver – or the deceived.

N Het Zwitsers-Nepalese muzikale wonderkind en de activiste Aïsha Devi zette haar alias Kate Wax (Border Community) op rust en startte haar eigen labeltje Danse Noire. Op haar laatste album Of Matter and Spirit combineert ze transcendentale vocale oorwormen met onstuimige r&b, trance en techno. Het album is gebouwd op het idee dat dansmuziek een spirituele ervaring kan oproepen door de rituele tendens. Het album werd ook een erg persoonlijk manifest waarin ze hedendaagse reclameboodschappen vergelijkt met mantra’s.

De Belgische producer Sky H1 bracht vorig jaar haar ep Motion uit op het Berlijnse PAN-label waarmee ze op veel aandacht van internationale pers en smaakmakers kon rekenen. Motion werd een subliem patchwork van de zinderende Brusselse elektronicascene dat techno, ambient en r&b koppelt en bol staat van de melancholie. Zeer verslavend!

N Het gaat hard voor Oathbreaker, de West-Vlaamse post-metalband van Church of Ra-adepten die dit jaar hun doorbraakplaat Rheia op de wereld losliet. Het album werd opgenomen in San Francisco waar er ook een boeiende en sferische documentaire gedraaid werd, te zien via Red Bull Music. Rheia staat voor gitzwarte metal afgewisseld met ogenschijnlijke momenten van bedrieglijke kalmte. Als luisteraar word je meegesleurd in deze hypnotiserende draaikolk en eensklaps verliefd op frontvrouw Caro Tanghe die tegelijk de rol van brulboei en sirene opneemt. Als je Noir Intense 70% en Noir Brut 86% van Côte d’Or zou samensmelten, krijg je Oathbreaker…

Het Brusselse Orphan Swords (Pierre Demûelenaere en Yannick Franck) smeedt brutale en intrigerende elektronische tracks tussen donkere techno, industrial en noise.

E Swiss-Nepalese musical prodigy and activist Aïsha Devi has put her alias Kate Wax (Border Community) at rest and started her own little label Danse Noire.

On her latest album Of Matter and Spirit she combines transcendental vocals with boisterous r&b, trance and techno.

The album is built upon on the idea that dance music can provoke a spiritual experience by the ritualistic tendency.

The album became also a very personal manifesto where she compares contemporary advertising slogans with mantras.

Last year Belgian producer Sky H1 released her EP Motion on Berlin label PAN, causing a lot of attention from international press and tastemakers.

Motion is a sublime patchwork of Brussels’ vibrant electronic music scene that blends techno, ambient and r&b and is full of melancholy. Very addictive!

E Oathbreaker, the West-Flemish post-metal band of four Church of Ra-adepts, is doing great. This year they released their breakthrough album Rheia, recorded in San Francisco — the recording process was the subject of a thrilling and spheric documentary by Red Bull Music.

Rheia is pitch black metal with moments of misleading calmth.

The listener is dragged along in an hypnotising tornado and will all of a sudden fall in love with the screaming siren that is singer Caro Tanghe. If you blended Noir Intense 70% and Noir Brut 86% from Côte d’Or, you’d get Oathbreaker…

Brussels-based duo Orphan Swords (Pierre Demûelenaere en Yannick Franck) makes brutal, intriguing electronics situated between dark techno, industrial and noise.

N ‘Humbling power, sacred shower’ is het mantra van WWWater, het soloproject van Charlotte Adigéry die debuteerde als simpelweg Charlotte. Geïnspireerd door het pure van de natuur kookt ze een smakelijk brouwsel van beats en loops, als het ware r&b met een punkattitude — of andersom.

Als oaktree brengt de jonge Antwerpenaar Adriaan de Roover sferische en betoverende elektronica die balanceert tussen de dansvloer en de huiskamer. In STUKcafé gaat hij voor een dansbare set.

Klåps speelt voor het tweede jaar op rij op de Artefact Clubnight en neemt voor deze speciale gelegenheid Bjeor mee voor een extra lange back tot back dj-set. Ook Bjeor is geen onbekende in Leuven en omstreken. Eerder dit jaar draaide hij al op STUK Draait Door, een editie die we nog steeds niet vergeten zijn.

N Actress is het pseudoniem van de Britse muzikant en producer Darren J. Cunningham. Zijn obscure en onvoorspelbare elektronica gaat vlotjes over van 2-step garage naar sub-bass en de typische Londense ravemuziek. Hij bracht albums uit op verschillende labels waaronder Honest Jon’s Records, Nonplus Records en Werkdiscs. Hij houdt de vinger aan de pols en bracht albums uit van rijzende sterren uit de scene als Zomby, Lukid en Starkey. Hij releaste ook het exceptionele album Hazyville dat lange tijd in de running was voor een Mercury Prize-nominatie.

Luikenaar François Boulanger is beter bekend onder de exotische naam ssaliva. Zijn tweede album We never happened kwam uit op het Belgische kwaliteitslabel Ekster.

E Actress is the moniker of British musician and producer Darren J. Cunningham. His shadowy, unpredictable music draws loosely on 2-step garage, sub-bass, and London’s rave heritage. It has been released by a number of different labels, including Honest Jon’s Records, Nonplus Records, and Werkdiscs, a label he co-founded in 2004. In the last 5 years of running the Werkdiscs label set himself apart as one of the hottest A&R scouts within his field, having discovered and released some of the most widely talked about artists of the emerging bass generation, namely Zomby, Lukid and Starkey. As Actress he produced the exceptional Hazyville LP drawing cries for a Mercury Award Nomination.

JAN SWERTS, AMIINA PRESENT FANTÔMAS, HELM, MIAUX & MARIS N Als tiener werd Jan Swerts betoverd door Wim Mertens en Philip Glass.

Recentelijk opnieuw door neoklassieke componisten als Max Richter en Jóhann Jóhannsson, maar ook door singer-songwriters als Nick Drake. Vorig jaar spreidde Swerts zijn post-apocalyptische wereld Schaduwland tentoon: de soundtrack van een braakland na een grote ramp.

Live is Schaduwland een lange trip tot de laatste stuiptrekking: met een wervelende start, langs een dromerige elektronisch pad tot een desolaat niemandsland waar enkel de piano overeind blijft.

Het Ijslands strijkkwartet amiina werd oorspronkelijk gevormd door 4 studentes van het Reykjavik college of music. Nadien toerden ze jarenlang mee als strijkkwartet van Sigur Rós. Met hun nieuwe album Fantômas, oorspronkelijk de soundtrack van Louis Feuillades film uit 1913, tovert amiina een donkere, spookachtige soundtrack bij dit verhaal over diefstal, moord en blackmail met viool, cello, percussie, harp en elektronica tot een beklijvende post-rockcocktail.

HELM is de schuilnaam van de Brit Luke Younger die al een tijdje ronddwaalt op het interessant Berlijnse PANlabel. Hij fabriceert potige, vernieuwende elektronische soundscapes waarvoor hij zijn inspiratie uit de meest ongewone bronnen haalt.

Met haar nieuwe album Hideway is de Antwerpse Casio-synthprinses Mia ‘MIAUX’ Prce aan haar vijfde release op Ultra Eczema toe. Badend in melancholie worden we herinnerd aan eighties­pop, synthsoundtracks en krautrockpioniers.

Een plaat om bij weg te dromen en te ontwaken in een stad waar de tijd is blijven stilstaan.

Maris is het soloproject van de Leuvense zangeres Mariske Broeckmeyer. Haar debuutplaat On Gods and Other Things verscheen eind 2016 op Rat Records. Scherpe sounds en stevige beats klinken vol en gelaagd en bevatten messcherpe vocals, die een gevoelige snaar raken.

HELM is the moniker of Luke Younger (UK) that resides already for a while on the Berlin PAN Label. He crafts powerful, innovative electronic soundscapes that take inspiration from the unlikeliest of sources.

Her newest album Hideway is already the fifth release of Casio synth princess Mia ‘MIAUX’ Prce on the Ultra Eczema label. Bathing in melancholy we are reminded to eighties pop, synth soundtracks and krautrock pioneers.

Music to dream away and to wake up in a city where time stands still.

On Gods and other Things is the debut album by Maris, the solo project of Leuven singer Mariske Broeckmeyer Sharp sounds and heavy beats sound thick and layered, with crystal clear vocals, that will touch you deep inside.

N De RAINFOREST-workshop, opgezet door Derek Holzer en Mads Bech Paluszewski-Hau, is een hedendaagse herinterpretatie van David Tudors gelijknamige reeks composities uit de jaren 70. Het gebruikt speciale soorten geluidsomzetters om live geluiden door verschillende metalen objecten te sturen, waardoor de hele ruimte een orkest van resonerende stemmen wordt.

Tijdens het Artefact festival 2017 host STUK een Rainforest-workshop van 25 februari tot 1 maart, met de steun van de Danish Arts Foundation.

Samen met Holzer en Paluszewski-Hau zullen 8 deelnemers samenwerken aan de bouw van installaties en repeteren voor een avondvullende voorstelling die toont welke geluidswereld er in alledaagse objecten schuilt.

E The RAINFOREST workshop, launched by Derek Holzer and Mads Bech Paluszewski-Hau, is a contemporary reinterpretation of David Tudors eponymous series of compositions during the 70ies. It uses special sorts of transformers to transfer live sounds through several metal objects, whereby the entire room becomes an orchestra of resonating voices.

During the Artefact festival 2017 STUK hosts the Rainforest workshop starting from February 25th to March 1st, with the support of the Danish Arts Foundation. Together with Holzer and Paluszewski-Hau 8 participants will build installations and rehearse for an evening that proves that there is a world of sound in everyday objects.

De proliferatie van slimme, schijnbaar intelligente en autonome toestellen zorgde voor nieuwe vormen van interventie, en nieuwe verhoudingen die vaak gehuld zijn in mysterie, technisch of politiek. Afterwards, designer of smart textiles Eef Lubbers presents Unlace and the Kimbow dress, two garments which change colour based on touch.

The lecture is followed by a discussion.

What is the state of the art and what will the future bring? Perhaps a better question is what textiles can do for us in the future. Can our magical fantasies become reality? And to what extent do we take undesirable applications into account?

N Een zelfherstellende spijkerbroek, kleren die laten zien hoe we ons voelen en een onzichtbaarheidsmantel. Het lijkt futuristisch en zelfs magisch, maar de ontwikkelingen zijn dichterbij dan je denkt.

Tijdens deze Grijze Cellen geeft hoogleraar Lieva Van Langenhove (U Gent) een lezing over slim textiel en vertelt fysicus Vincent Ginis (VUB en Harvard) over (zijn) onderzoek naar de ontwikkeling van een onzichtbaarheidsmantel. Daarnaast geeft Eef Lubbers als ontwerper van slimme kleding een presentatie over Unlace en de Kimbow jurk, twee kledingstukken die van kleur veranderen door de warmte van een aanraking. Na de lezingen volgt een gesprek.

Wat is er al mogelijk en hoe zal het textiel van de toekomst eruitzien?

Of beter gezegd, wat zal textiel in de toekomst voor ons doen? Kunnen we onze magische fantasieën werkelijkheid laten worden en in hoeverre houden we daarbij rekening met onwenselijke toepassingen?

Met onze redactie infiltreren we in Artefact en nemen we het thema van de tentoonstelling onder de loep.

Privérondleidingen, interviews met enkele kunstenaars, gesprekken met de organisatoren, het is allemaal materiaal voor de teksten die we schrijven voor onze krant. We brainstormen, argumenteren, schrijven, schrappen, publiceren en drukken drie dagen lang tot we de magie helemaal in onze vingers hebben.

Rondleidingen worden gegeven van woensdag 22 februari tem donderdag 9 maart op weekdagen van 09:00 tot 20:30 (start laatste rondleiding). Of je nu overdag komt met je school of organisatie, of je liever een afterwork-rondleiding met je collega’s volgt, we werken graag een voorstel op maat uit. Wil je er ook graag een extraa tje aan toevoegen en er bijvoorbeeld iets feestelijks van maken met een receptie, dan kan dat ook.

JONATHAN ALLEN UK °1966, LONDEN N Jonathan Allen is een beeldend kunstenaar en schrijver die woont en werkt in Londen. In zijn praktijk onderzoekt hij de politiek van betovering en de verschillende vormen van magie in de late moderniteit. Zijn teksten werden o.a. gepubliceerd in Truth is Concrete – A Handbook For Artistic Strategies in Real Politics (Sternberg Press, 2014), Notes on The Magic of the State (Lisson Gallery & Beirut, 2013), en Curiosity and Method: Ten Years of Cabinet Magazine (Cabinet Books, 2012). Jonathan Allen is daarnaast curator bij The Magic Circle Museum, Londen waar hij in 2013 een vergeten set tarotkaarten herontdekte die in 1906 met de hand geschilderd werd door de Britse kunstenaar en mysticus Austin Osman Spare. Het daaruit resulterende boek Lost Envoy werd gepubliceerd door Strange Attractor Press (2016). In 2009 initieerde en co-cureerde hij de reizende Haywardtentoonstelling Magic Show.

ERIC ARNAL-BURTSCHY FR °1981, PARIJS N Eric Arnal-Burtschy studeerde geschiedenis, filosofie en geopolitiek

voordat hij zich ging toeleggen op de performatieve en beeldende kunsten.

In zijn werk onderzoekt hij universele elementen zoals beweging en ruimte en vragen omtrent het menselijke. Samen met Lyllie Rouvière maakte hij Bouncing in a Bulk, een diptiek over het universum en de noties van het oneindige.

Daarnaast presenteerde hij, samen met Clara Furey, een rapport over vrijheid en eenzaamheid, Ciguë. Zijn laatste creatie, Deep are the Woods, is een choreografie van licht die de toeschouwer aanspoort over zijn relatie tot zichzelf en de lege ruimte na te denken. Eric ArnalBurtschy woont en werkt in Europa en is als kunstenaar verbonden aan de Hallen van Schaarbeek tot 2018.

E Eric Arnal-Burtschy followed a course in history, philosophy and geopolitics before moving to the performing and visual arts. His work is often based on research about the physics of the Universe and a questioning of the human. Together with Lyllie Rouvière he created Bouncing Universe in a Bulk, a diptych about infinity and emptiness, before presenting Ciguë with Clara Furey, a solo on freedom and loneliness. His latest work, Deep are the Woods, is an evocation of the vacuum by the writing of the light. • pertendo.eu BCL AT / JP °2005, TOKYO N De Oostenrijkse kunstenaar Georg Tremmel (°1977) en de Japanse kunstenares Shiho Fukuhara (°1976) vormen sinds 2005 het duo BCL. Als collectief onderzoekt BCL de relaties, de congruenties en de verschillen tussen biologische en culturele codes, en dat aan de hand van artistieke interventies, social hacking en onderzoek. Hun algemene interesse gaat uit naar de wisselwerking tussen kunst en wetenschap. Meer specifiek focust BCL op mediakunst en biowetenschappen waarbij Tremmel en Fukuhara de sociale implicaties van de verspreiding en de toepassing

van biotechnologie willen nagaan. In tegenstelling tot hun toekomstgericht en speculatief onderzoek zijn hun projecten steeds gesitueerd in de hedendaagse sociale en maatschappelijke context. Georg Tremmel en Shiho Fukuhara wonen en werken in Tokyo.

E BCL is an artistic research platform formed by the artists Georg Tremmel (°1977) and Shiho Fukuhara (°1976) in 2005. As a collective, they explore the relations, congruences and differences of biological and cultural codes through artistic interventions, social hacking and research. In general, both artists are interested in the relationship between art and science. In particular, their works of art focus on media art and bio science where they explore the social implications that the adoption and application of biotechnology will create. In contrast to their speculative and forward-looking research, BCL’s projects always situate themselves in the present social and cultural context. N De multidisciplinaire praktijk van de Nederlandse kunstenares Melanie Bonajo omvat film, performance, installaties, muziek, events en fotografie. In haar werk onderzoekt ze de toenemende vervreemding van het individu als gevolg van de technologische vooruitgang en de consumptiecultuur. Bonajo reageert op het verlies van menselijke, spirituele / ­religieuze en traditionele waarden en het verdwijnen van connecties tussen individuen. De spirituele leegheid van de huidige generaties, de complexe relatie tussen mens en natuur, existentiële vragen en ideeën rond classificatie, gender en waarden en normen staan centraal in haar werk. Melanie Bonajo studeerde aan de Gerrit Rietveld Academie en resideerde aan de Rijksakademie voor Beeldende Kunst in Amsterdam (20092010) en de ISCP in New York (2014).

Spiritual emptiness, the complex relationship between human and nature, existential questions and ideas about classification, gender and values are central subjects in her oeuvre. Hij studeerde aan de kunstacademie in Münster en ging zich, onder invloed van Phil Niblock en de experimentele performances van Het Apollohuis, toeleggen op de experimentele muziek en geluidskunst. Sindsdien creëerde hij een rijk oeuvre dat wereldwijd getoond wordt. Jens Brand woont en werkt in Berlijn. Hij geeft les aan de kunstacademie in Kassel.

E The oeuvre of artist Jens Brand consists of diverse sound installations, music performances and cross-­media works. He studied fine arts at the Münster Academy of Fine Art. Inspired by Phill Niblock and the artistic environment at Paul Panhuysen’s Het Apollohuis, he turned to experimental music and sound art. CENTER FOR TACTICAL MAGIC US °2000, SAN FRANCISCO N Het Center for Tactical Magic werd in 2000 opgericht door Aaron Gach. Dit collectief staat bekend om zijn performances, installaties en tentoonstellingen waarin sociale, politieke en historische onderwerpen vanuit een ‘magisch’ perspectief benaderd worden. Humor, verrassingseffecten, vermommingen en andere ideeën uit het veld van tactische magie bieden het publiek een alternatieve kijk op de dagelijkse realiteit.

E The Center for Tactical Magic was founded in 2000 by Aaron Gach. This collective is known for their performances, installations and exhibitions that explore social, political and historical issues. Society and its problems are approached from a ‘magical’ perspective.

Hoe ervaart men de werkelijkheid? Hoe begrijpt men de steeds veranderende wereld? Daarnaast focust Dijkman op de onuitputtelijke menselijke nood om die wereld te controleren en te beïnvloeden.

In Dijkmans oeuvre komen aspecten uit cultuur, wetenschap en tijd samen.

De werken onderzoeken sporen uit het verleden, het heden en de toekomst, onze collectieve verhalen, historische objecten en de menselijke relatie tot al die elementen. De praktijk van Marjolijn Dijkman beslaat drie verschillende delen die onlosmakelijk met elkaar verbonden zijn: internationale projecten, werken die vanuit een specifieke interesse of voor een specifieke context zijn gecreëerd en initiatieven zoals Enough Room for Space. N In 2004 vormen kunstenaars Simon Goldin en Jakob Senneby samen het duo Goldin+Senneby. In hun werk combineren ze het artistieke met financiële theorieën en performatieve methodes die vaak uit de magische wereld komen. Zo onderzoeken ze juridische, financiële en spatiale constructies en verdiepen ze zich in virtuele werelden, offshorebedrijven, withdrawalstrategieën en subversieve speculatie. Door ideeën, elementen en theorieën van die wereld in hun artistieke praktijk te gebruiken, willen ze de effecten van het laat kapitalistische systeem en het neoliberalisme benadrukken.

E Since 2004, Simon Goldin and Jakob Senneby started working as an artistic duo. In their work they combine the artistic with financial theories and performative methods.

Goldin+Senneby explore juridical, financial and spatial constructions.

Virtual worlds, offshore companies, withdrawal strategies and subversive speculation have no secrets for this duo. By using financial and market inspired ideas, methods and theories,

Als kunstenaar is ze geïnteresseerd in de machtsstructuren en relaties tussen financiële markten, internationale wetgevingen, geopolitieke verhoudingen, ethiek en de wereldwijde klimaatverandering. Zo onderzoekt ze de werking van geopolitieke infrastructuren en machtsverhoudingen en focust ze op de wereldwijde financiële sector.

Herregraven confronteert de toeschouwer met controversiële politieke en economische verhalen. Via games, video’s, prints, tekeningen, installaties en sculpturen worden thema’s zoals internationale belastingontduiking (bv.

Taxodus) op een speelse en luchtige wijze aangehaald. Femke Herregraven woont en werkt in Amsterdam. Ze bereidt momenteel een solotentoonstelling voor in Future Gallery, Berlijn.

E The multimedia practice of Femke Herregraven is based on the friction between the material and the digital.

As an artist, she is interested in power structures and the relations between financial markets, international law, geopolitical structures and climate change.

She explores the geopolitical infrastructures and power relations. Herregraven confronts the viewer with controversial political and economical narratives.

Through games, videos, prints, drawings, installations and sculptures she addresses thematics like international tax evasion in a playful and airy way.

Femke Herregraven lives and works in Amsterdam. She is currently preparing a solo exhibition at Future Gallery in Berlin.

E Simon Hollington and Kypros Kyprianou have been collaborating for over fifteen years producing installations, videos, publications, performance and site-specific interventions. They willfully disturb competing histories, subjectively comparing and combining elements to create new narratives that are simultaneously funny and unnerving.

Their diverse body of work has explored the relationship between science fiction and science fact; revolutionary politics and magic; time travel and military design; branding and propaganda; the nuclear power industry and the pr industry; and technology and the uncanny. The works are often based within a historical context, are activist in intent and explore narrative as a way of challenging the notional gap between fact and fiction.

VERENA FRIEDRICH DE °1981, HANAU N Het multidisciplinaire werk van Verena Friedrich bestaat uit installaties waarin ze aan de slag gaat met organische,

elektronische en sculpturale elementen. Als vertrekpunt fungeren zowel theoretisch onderzoek als praktische experimenten met verschillende materialen, vormen en functies. Verena Friedrich studeerde aan de Universiteit voor Kunst en Design, Offenbach, de Academie voor Schone Kunsten, Wenen en de Academie voor Mediakunst in Keulen.

E Verena Friedrich is a multidisciplinary artist creating installations in which organic, electronic and sculptural media come into play. Theoretical research and practical hands-on experiments with very diverse materials, objects and functions are the starting points of her artistic work. Daarnaast werkt Laser samen met mensen uit zeer verschillende beroepen, van dansers en acteurs tot dokters en leden van motorbendes. Liz Magic Laser studeerde aan Wesleyan University (BA, 2003) en Columbia University (MFA, 2008), en resideerde aan het Skowhegan School of Painting & Sculpture (2008) en Whitney Museum Independent Study Program (2009). Ze woont en werkt in Brooklyn, New York.

E Liz Magic Laser is a video and performance artist based in Brooklyn, New York. Her videos and performances intervene in semi-public spaces such as bank vestibules, movie theaters and newsrooms, and have involved collaborations with actors, surgeons, political strategists and motorcycle

gang members. She earned a BA from Wesleyan University (2003) and an MFA from Columbia University (2008).

N Shana Moulton creëert video’s en performances met suggestieve verhullende verhaallijnen. Met een combinatie van verontrustend scherpe humor en een low-tech popsensibiliteit speelt ze een maf maar herkenbaar personage in een lichtjes verdraaide huiselijke sfeer. Haar interacties met de alledaagse wereld zijn tegelijkertijd doodgewoon en surreëel.

Terwijl haar protagonist de enigmatische en mogelijks magische eigenschappen van haar huiselijke omgeving probeert te navigeren, hanteert Moulton objecten en gebruiksgoederen die zowel banaal als oneigenlijk zijn. E Shana Moulton creates evocatively oblique narratives in her video and performance works. Combining an unsettling, wry humor with a low-tech, Pop sensibility, Moulton plays a character whose interactions with the everyday world are both mundane and surreal, in a domestic sphere just slightly askew. Het collectief focust zich voornamelijk op geavanceerde vormen van economie en informatietechnologie. Hun artistieke werk bestaat uit interactieve installaties en digitale of analoge visuele performances. Hun praktijk omvat o.a. het schrijven van esoterisch geïnspireerde algoritmes, het binnenbrengen van suïcidale tradingmachines in de financiële markten, het verdraaien van neurale netwerken, het verstoren van dataverkeer en het jagen op geesten in de ruis van dataverkeer.

Ze richten zich op het deconstrueren en het ondermijnen van de ideologie die achter het cybernetisch kapitalisme schuilgaat.

In its interactive installations, its digital and analogue performances and interfaces the platformexplores the world of high-­ frequency economics and information technologies. SUZANNE TREISTER UK °1958, LONDEN N Suzanne Treister begon haar carrière in de schilderkunst, maar maakte aan het begin van de jaren negentig al snel naam binnen het door de digitale en nieuwe media geïnspireerde kunstenveld.

Treister vindt haar inspiratie in opkomende technologieën, fictieve werelden in ontwikkeling en internationale samenwerkingsorganisaties. In haar werk maakt ze gebruik van verschillende media zoals video, internet, interactieve technologieën, fotografie, pen en waterverf. Ze

ontwikkelde een rijk oeuvre dat berust op excentrieke narratieven en onconventionele onderzoeken die onderliggende structuren tussen macht, identiteit en kennis blootleggen. Haar projecten, die zich vaak over verscheidene jaren verspreiden, omvatten re-interpretaties van bepaalde historische en hedendaagse gebeurtenissen die het bestaan van onbekende militaire of paranormale krachten in de wereld onderzoeken.

Often spanning several years, her projects comprise fantastic reinterpretations of given taxonomies and histories that examine the existence of covert, unseen forces at work in the world, whether corporate, military or paranormal.
