Meet Catalina, Xavier, and Alena

We asked three DIS students to reflect on what they learned during their semester abroad, and what they would tell future students who are about to begin the journey.

Catalina (she/her) Bates College

As a psychology major, Catalina decided to explore career paths by trying something new and enrolling in the Forensic Psychology Core Course.

Her hobbies include pottery, baking, and browsing the many thrift shops in Stockholm.

“My advice to future students: find your thing and pursue it. It will make you feel connected here to who you are as a person - and the whole point of coming abroad is to explore who you are as a person. Doing things you love is important to that.”

Xavier (he/him)

Inspired by his mom’s lifelong relationship with her study abroad host family, Xavier chose to live in a Homestay.

Skiing, running, and playing basketball with locals, his love of sports brought him closer to new friends and to Swedish culture.

“Do your best to branch out and always stay open-minded. You don’t know what will stick with you. I’ve been taking classes that I wouldn’t normally take in my school and meeting lots of people.

There are all kinds of people here. You will find yours, even if it takes time.”

Alena (she/her)

Having traveled around the world, Alena has called many places home. But her semester abroad was a new step in independence as it was the first time she traveled alone.

Her interests in gender, sexuality, and race made Stockholm an obvious place to study abroad.

“It’s okay for things not to be perfect, especially in the first few weeks when you get here. You know, you come in with this expectation of studying abroad in Europe and everything being perfect and mind blowing from the start. But in those first few weeks, it can be hard to adjust. It isn’t just you. The people around you are going through it too, and you’re going to make it out alright.”

My Study Tour changed the way I think about the world and learning in general. I saw what I learned in the classroom having real-life implications for people’s lives.”

Your courses will offer new perspectives

“Scandinavia is a perfect place to study gender. They've made great strides, especially when it comes to things like parental leave and childcare in general, but there's also lots of criticisms that are important. It isn't perfect. I learned in my classes that the picture is a lot more complicated than you think."

Your new friends will leave an impact on you

“What I’ll take home... I think it is mostly the friendships and the people I’ve met here. My Homestay family for example, I think I built a really lasting relationship with them and I want to stay in touch. I’ve met locals through playing basketball, and so many good people through my classes. I’ll keep holding on to those friendships and what I learned from them.“

People will be there to help you

“DIS has a great support system and it fosters so much community. I have found great friends through the LGBTQIA+ affinity group and also in my housing, where we make use of our common spaces and host Tuesday reality TV show nights or craft nights. All those options made it pretty easy to find a support system and a community And even when I had harder times, I was able to talk to the DIS Care Team for support, which helped a lot.”

You will grow more independent

“One thing I really love about Swedish culture is fika. I really like this idea of slowing down. Back home, especially at school, it’s always go go go. Here, through fika, I’m learning how to slow down. I’m learning to go to a coffee shop and sit completely by myself. As small of a thing as that is, that was something I wouldn’t have done before, so I feel like I’ve really grown more independent in my couple of months here.”

“It’s okay for things not to be perfect.”

A Scandinavian home, a global mindset Since 1959

DIS is an independent, non-profit institution, founded in Denmark and based in Scandinavia, with over 65 years of practice in study abroad.

We are located in Stockholm and Copenhagen because we have deep connections to the people and cultures of these two cities. We believe study abroad should be rooted in a location and our teaching is influenced by our Scandinavian ethos and values. Our students use our local ties to immerse themselves within a new culture and build a home away from home while they expand their own boundaries and explore the world.

Semester and summer abroad in Stockholm and Copenhagen

Freedom of choice

With over 400 courses, various housing options, and the ability to study for a summer, semester, or full year, DIS lets you design an experience that fits your goals—both inside and outside the classroom.

We learn best through action and experience. That’s why DIS courses are built to give you opportunities for hands-on learning and exploration. Learning by doing

Place-based learning

The city as your classroom

Education abroad should lean into the context and culture of your new home.

Your academics will make use of the city as a learning space, whether that means venturing out on a bike tour to investigate Copenhagen’s cycling architecture or visiting one of Stockholm’s newest neighborhoods to study how the politics of sustainability meet modern engineering capabilities.

Hands-on and experiential

DIS courses embrace a Scandinavian academic model, meaning they prioritize interactive learning and free exploration of topics.

You can expect your classes to bring a hands-on approach to your topic and feature discussions, real-life case studies, project-based learning, and conversations with experts and professionals.

Your semester will be filled with opportunities to improve practical skills, expand your professional knowledge, and build an international network.

Lab courses, workshops, studios, and practicums offer the chance to hone specific skills and work within local research institutions, nonprofits, and businesses.

Stockholm, Sweden

The largest city in Scandinavia, Stockholm is a leader in sustainability, research, activism, technology, and culture. Built as a series of 14 islands, the city is a perfect blend of water, nature, and metropolitan spaces, all connected by its extensive metro system. Some of the most influential figures in the world have called this city home, from Alfred Nobel to Greta Thunberg, ABBA to Avicii.

A city on the world stage

Pushing research forward

Stockholm is home to some of the most innovative research institutions, sustainability initiatives, and startups in the world. DIS Stockholm students have the chance to study the latest developments in medicine at the Karolinska Institute, learn about machine learning-driven algorithms from Spotify, and engineer a more sustainable future with KTH Royal Institute of Technology.

Progressive at its core

Live in a city that embraces forwardthinking and inclusive ideals. Stockholm has a long history of activism and progressive policies advancing labor rights, gender and sexual equality, sustainability, education, and universal access to healthcare.

Connected to nature

Access to nature is a key part of Swedish culture. It’s even written in Swedish law by allemansrätten, the right to roam in nature. Whether you take a train out into the forest, enjoy a sauna and swim in a lake, or ferry from island to island on the archipelago, you’re never far from the outdoors.

A different kind of city

Stockholm doesn’t necessarily feel like your classic European city. It isn’t London or Paris or Florence. There’s so much nature, there are all these islands, each with their own personality, and the city is busy, but still feels calm and relaxed. That’s why I wanted to come here, to experience a different kind of study abroad program in a different kind of city.

The DIS building in Östermalm is practically a second home for me. In that one building, it’s where all us DIS students go to class, see each other in the Student Hub, eat lunch in the building’s café, and even grab fika with professors to talk with them one-on-one. It really feels like we have ownership of the space. There are even these hallways with study rooms you can book - I’ve used them to study with friends, write my blogs, or just watch Grey’s Anatomy and have a quiet moment to myself. I have just about everything there I could need.

How I made Stockholm my home

Local connections

The café just a five-minute walk from my housing is like home by now. Every time I walk in there, I’m greeted with this big smile by Massimo, the barista. He knows my order and we chat together. He speaks Italian and I speak Spanish, so we also get to share this linguistic bond. He’s lived here for many years, and I love having this relationship with someone who brings both a local and an immigrant perspective to Stockholm.

My

The combination of forested nature, islands, and the ocean make Stockholm a beautiful and unique place to call home. My favorite lookout spot is on Södermalm, just a 15-minute walk from my housing. From there, you get a view over three different islands and it really puts the city into context. You see all the places in the city you visit and you realize from there that this whole city is connected. I never get over that view.

Copenhagen, Denmark

Copenhagen consistently ranks at the top of international surveys on safety, sustainability, quality of life, cuisine, and design. Despite its worldwide prominence and famous companies like LEGO and Novo Nordisk, Copenhagen retains a small-town feeling compared to other major European capitals.

A city built for people

The modern village

Copenhagen has busy shopping streets and plenty of activities, but the atmosphere is more relaxed. With its medieval cobblestone streets and high levels of social trust, Copenhageners host a tight-knit community, literally and figuratively.

Happy to slow down

Copenhageners place an emphasis on slowing down and enjoying life. That’s probably why it constantly ranks among lists of the world’s happiest and most livable cities. Whether sitting out under the sun or cozying up with a book by candlelight, Danes love to hygge at their own pace.

Biking Vikings

Every day, thousands of locals commute around the city using its more than 240 miles of bike lanes. Sustainable, efficient, and practical, biking is the perfect way to take advantage of Copenhagen’s flat landscape and discover every nook of the city center and the surrounding neighborhoods.

Finding bits of home

More than any physical space, it was a shift in my mindset that made me feel most at home here. Back home, I am used to having a very strict daily schedule and I was worried about not having that while abroad. One of the first signs for me that I was getting comfortable in Copenhagen was when I noticed that I was doing different, new things all the time and actually enjoying it. I could break a bit from my rigid schedule and embrace a more fluid approach. I surprised myself, and that let me know I’m capable of more than I thought.

New attitude and independence

In the first weeks being here, I found myself taking a walk to Amager Strand, a beach near my housing. I was looking for something familiar in this new place and the walk reminded me of childhood summers visiting the beach. Over the semester, that walk has turned into a favorite running route of mine, especially when the sun is shining.

Melanie

(she/her)

How I made Copenhagen my home

My housing and my roommates have made this place feel so much like home. I didn’t even realize it until a friend visited me and she couldn’t get over how much we acted like a family. The 11 of us cook together, explore the city, and travel together. There was even this one week when we all caught a sickness. We were able to bond over our misery and laugh about it together. That community we built made the whole situation feel better.

The walk to my classes helped me get comfortable in this new city. I never imagined how walkable it would be here and I love noticing new details and finding new paths through the city. When every week abroad looks so different, that walk stayed consistent. Eventually certain spots and details became like a tradition for my daily walks, which was really grounding since a semester abroad can be difficult for someone who loves their routines.

Arctic Experiential Studies: Greenland

The Arctic is at the center of major global challenges, including climate change and increasing geopolitical tensions. With its strategic location between Europe and North America, and as home to the world’s second-largest ice sheet, Greenland offers a unique vantage point for studying these issues up close.

A significant portion of the session takes place outside the classroom, allowing you to connect with Greenland’s stunning nature, connect with local communities, and see firsthand how climate change is affecting the region.

How it works

You spend four weeks in Greenland, bookended by two weeks in Copenhagen.

All students will take a foundational course:

• Kalaallit Nunaat: Greenland’s History, Culture, and People

You choose a subject focus course:

• Climate Change in Action

• Eco-Psychology

• Geopolitical Rivalries and Global Security

Fully funded

This is a highly selective program. Students accepted into this session will have their tuition and fees covered, an effort to empower the next generation of climate advocates by making sustainability-focused education more accessible.

Know your deadlines

One of the biggest obstacles that people foresee to study abroad is how one will fund it. However, study abroad can be pretty feasible. Look into how your school deals with tuition and if your current scholarships are still eligible to be applied abroad. For me that was a great help.”
