DIS Student ‘22-‘23

Hej, I’m Rara

It all began with a curiosity for the unknown lands of Scandinavia, the paradise of the “happiest people on Earth.” I wanted to see for myself how people there lived and thrived. What could I learn from them? Since I moved to the U.S. from Indonesia at the age of 18, traveling to foreign lands and exploring different cultures has become a core value in my life journey. Combined with my aspiration to be a global urban planner, Copenhagen made perfect sense as a place to understand Scandinavian values and study urban planning in a country known to be a leading nation in sustainability and architecture.

At DIS, the experiential learning I encountered through my Field Studies were integral parts of my urban studies education and shaped the way I saw the city around me. On Study Tours, Europe became my classroom as we traveled to discover new cultural elements and perspectives I would never have been able to gain otherwise. The friendships I have established with Danes and other internationals have been deeply meaningful and the different stories and perspectives we’ve shared have allowed me to learn compassion, humility, and acceptance towards one another. To them, I say thank you for inspiring me to be proud of my identity.

To me, studying abroad was also an opportunity to get to know myself. Looking back, I can now see how capable and independent I have become, much more than I ever thought possible. The challenges I faced taught me to accept myself for who I am, regardless of the imperfections. The Lindhardt Family, my Visiting Host, was also an enormous bliss to me during my growth process. They welcomed me with unconditionally open arms and have provided me with feelings of joy, love, and a sense of belonging even as I was thousands of miles away from home. The people I have found, the new experiences I have had, and the self-discoveries I have made here will continue with me long after I return home.

A ll of this is to say, I am so excited for you. By reading this, you are one step closer in beginning the most transformative period in your life – no matter how far along you are in that process. Be brave and embrace the memories you are about to make. Show the world the courage it takes and the resilience you will develop as you create your own story with DIS. Believe me, it will all be worth it.

Since 1959

A Scandinavian Home –A Global Mindset

COPENHAGEN, DENMARK STOCKHOLM, SWEDEN

DIS was founded with a core mission: to facilitate intercultural understanding, promote academic curiosity, and foster a global mindset in each student. So much has changed from 1959 to today, but even as the context around us shifts, our mission remains the exact same. A curious, nuanced, and international mindset is as important as ever in today’s complex and constantly evolving world.

We believe that a study abroad program should be truly rooted in the culture and values of the location in which you study. That’s why, as a Scandinavian institution, DIS is based only in Stockholm and Copenhagen, two cities where we have deep connections to the people and culture. Our students use these ties to immerse themselves within a new culture and build a home away from home.

Today, with over 60 years of practice in pursuing our mission, we’re more convinced than ever that this is the right approach – to be deeply connected to our corner of the world while exploring the issues that affect the entire globe.

We’re proud of our story, and we’re excited for you to join us and make your own.

Here’s what you can expect from DIS

Freedom of Choice

DIS offers over 340 courses across 28 programs, making it easy for you to study abroad while keeping up with your academics, or allowing you to explore new topics during your time abroad.

Learn In and Out of the Classroom

Where you learn is as important as what you learn. That’s why your courses emphasize place-based learning through Field Studies which take you out of the classroom to grapple with academic topics in real life. Your Core Course also includes two faculty-led Study Tours to further contextualize your understanding of topics while in a relevant European destination.

Connecting with Locals

DIS hosts a variety of partnerships and meetups to help foster intercultural exchange, or we can help you join a local club or volunteer organization. Most people in Stockholm and Copenhagen have high levels of fluency in English and there are plenty of opportunities to meet and learn from them.

Your well-being is top priority during your time abroad. At DIS, we have a Care Team of professional staff ready to support your physical and mental health and safety, with a 24-hour emergency phone so they can be contacted at any time. We also offer yoga and meditation sessions and other pop-up events hosted by our community team.

The courses I took and the professors I matriculated under not only challenged me in my studies but even drew a clearer picture of what I want to do in life.”
GABRIELLE, SPELMAN COLLEGE
I think DIS does an incredible job of helping students get adjusted and situated abroad. From giving everyone transportation passes to basically handling the entire visa process for us, I definitely think DIS really helped alleviate some of the initial stress and concern of studying abroad.”

Pursue Your Unique Academic Goals Abroad

DIS offers you freedom of choice when it comes to creating your own academic path.

Start off by selecting a Core Course that will define your semester, then select from a huge variety of elective courses to round out your schedule and make it completely your own.

A Scandinavian Approach

DIS classes draw from the Scandinavian academic model, which prioritizes interactive learning. You can expect a hands-on approach, with class discussions, real-life case studies, and group projects leading your learning throughout the semester. Most DIS faculty work as professionals in the areas they teach, so they are able to bring theory to life by drawing from their career experiences.

Place-based Learning

Bring class out of the classroom. Explore Stockholm or Copenhagen through an academic lens with your faculty on Field Studies to locations throughout your city. Then, expand your scope on your two course-integrated Study Tours. Study Tours bring you to a location in Europe that contextualizes the learnings from your Core Course, combining theory with practice and exposing you to additional cultural perspectives. Study Tours are included in your tuition.

Develop Career Skills

In addition to your courses being academically rigorous, many offer you opportunities to build on practical skills and strengthen important cultural competencies. In labs, workshops, and practicums, you hone specific skills and experience a taste of daily life for a potential future career. You can use your international experience to expand your network, build your cultural knowledge, and grow a more global mindset, all skills that can improve your future resumé.

9
What struck me the most about DIS was the opportunity to take courses across disciplines. I was able to build a semester that fit a whole range of interests and I left Scandinavia having discovered newly formed passions that ended up shaping my college experience.”
PARKER, UNIVERSITY OF PUGET SOUND

Stockholm

Small cohort, big city

DIS Stockholm hosts roughly 200 students per semester, giving the program a more close-knit and communal feeling while you explore the many islands and hip neighborhoods of Scandinavia’s largest and most cosmopolitan city.

History Meets Modernity

Attend class in a new, modern building located just steps away from the iconic Stockholm Olympic Stadium. Both are located within the neighborhood of Östermalm, a trendy area where historic architecture now houses some of the most well-known restaurants, brands, and cafes in Sweden.

Travel in Style

Stockholm’s tunnelbana subway system is famous for the unique artworks that adorn each metro station. All students receive a transport card which grants them free access to the full T-bana system, plus buses, trains, and ferries in the greater Stockholm area.

Connected to Nature

Access to nature is deeply ingrained in Swedish culture. Visit charming islands along the archipelago, find a quiet moment on a hike in a nearby national forest, or go for a swim in the ocean or one of Stockholm’s many lakes.

10

Climbing Gym

Throughout the semester, I slowly spread my presence around Stockholm. I joined a climbing gym and found a great community there. I explored the neighborhoods of the city until I found my favorite cafés to share fika with friends and libraries for study spots. I tried new pastries, celebrated new holidays, and visited museums whenever I could. With each small step, Sweden became more and more of a home.

For me, spending time in nature and forming a mental map of surrounding roads and trails helps to deepen my connection to an area. It’s what I do at home in California, at college in New York, and also did in Sweden, where I ran in the national park just minutes from home.

Running

I lived in a Homestay in Tyresö, a municipality south of Stockholm, in a quiet residential area. I felt like I got the best of both worlds in my Stockholm experience. I loved that I got to experience daily Swedish life outside of the typical tourist spots, but I could easily take public transport straight into the city for classes or when I wanted to see my friends.

Stockholm Fashion

I study fashion and textiles, so I was interested to learn that Swedish brands focus on sustainability, quality, and timeless designs that result in a very clear aesthetic and identity. I love the elegance and functionality of the Stockholm style. It seemed people in Sweden were much more thoughtful with what they wore and how they constructed an outfit. Though I never fully assimilated into a trench coat and neutrals-based wardrobe, I brought a lot of these ideas back home with me.

Copenhagen

A city designed for humans

DIS Copenhagen is located in the heart of the historic inner city, where Copenhagen’s quaint villagelike charm meets its reputation as a trendy, vibrant, capital city.

Happy to Slow Down

Copenhagen is consistently ranked among the world’s most livable cities. Copenhageners place an emphasis on slowing down and enjoying life. Whether sitting out under the sun or cozying up with candles and blankets, Danes love to hygge at their own pace.

Green Spaces Galore

Copenhagen hosts a variety of parks, gardens, lakes, and beaches. Even some cemeteries double as beautiful green spaces for walks and enjoying the nature. Copenhagen offers plenty of ways to find solace within the city.

Biking Vikings

Every day, thousands of locals commute around the city using its more than 400 kilometers of bike lanes. Sustainable, efficient, and practical – biking is the perfect way to take advantage of Copenhagen’s flat landscape and discover every nook of the city center and the surrounding neighborhoods.

A Sense of Place

Getting out of Copenhagen and seeing more of Denmark really helped me feel at home. Just taking the train to Helsingør and Roskilde and even over to Malmö in Sweden, it gave me a sense of where I was and what was around me.

I love the Copenhagen Metro with my whole heart. It’s just so clean and timely and it goes everywhere I need it to. I never had public transit like this back home and it encouraged me to explore further into the neighborhoods around me and gave me a sense of confidence knowing I could navigate the city by myself.

How I made Copenhagen my home

Copenhagen felt like a happy medium. It’s a bustling city with a lot of life to it, but as soon as I turn a corner, I can find that slower, relaxed pace of life. I like having that option to take a breath. It’s refreshing.

Public Transit

I found home in different, unexpected ways. Some were as small as a new mug from a local store, others were as large as a newfound confidence in myself, a sense of belonging

Belonging

Food is so important to culture and to home. I developed a love for smørrebrød and cinnamon rolls, but finding a way to make food from home here was also important. Finding plantains and spices from an African market in Vesterbro was incredible. After I made them, I called my grandma to say ‘look, I made plantains!’ When she replied, ‘wow, you’re growing up now,’ it hit me. I was growing.

STUDENT SPOTLIGHT

RYN (she/her), Lehigh University, studied Biomedical Engineering at DIS Stockholm.

As a bioengineering and neuroscience major, Ryn knew that in order to study abroad, her DIS Core Course needed to be directly linked to her studies and that the credits easily transferred back to her home university. Her Biomedical Engineering class was co-taught by a systems modeling engineer and a researcher in ultrasound devices, who inspired her to see how engineering could play a role in her future plans to attend medical school. The main highlight from Ryn’s semester was the visit to the KTH Royal Institute of Technology where she talked to a co-founder of BrailleTouch, a keyboard technology for blind users of smartphones.

STUDENT SPOTLIGHT

A Welcoming and Liberal Environment

SHILOH (they/she), Skidmore College, studied Gender, Equality, and Sexuality at DIS Stockholm.

When deciding to study abroad, Shiloh hoped to find a place where they would feel comfortable and accepted for who they are. They chose Stockholm because Scandinavia has a reputation as a very liberal and gender-equal area of the world. In their Core Course, not only did they explore their identity, but also the history of queer people in Scandinavia.

Little did I know, I would be surrounded by an amazing group of queer people and allies. The classroom is a safe space for the conversations we have and for being open about our own identities. I have learned so much about LGBTQIA+ history and rights since being in this class.”

GREEN EXPLORATION SPOTLIGHT

Slow Travel and Be Inspired by Your Surroundings

With Stockholm being awarded the first-ever European Green Capital and Copenhagen’s ambitious goal of becoming carbon neutral, these cities provide an ideal backdrop for developing sustainable habits. Inspired by the Scandinavian dedication to sustainability, DIS is committed to reducing our carbon impact The majority of our carbon emissions come from Study Tours, as air travel is especially polluting. To reduce our impact, several of our Study Tours now travel by train and ferry to their destinations.

As a student, you can also see Scandinavian sustainability initiatives in person and take a slow travel approach to exploring around you. While in Denmark, why not hop on your bike to check out a biodynamic farm, or perhaps visit the renewable energy island of Samsø? In Sweden, take a night train to the north and experience the magnificent natural phenomena of northern lights. Whether taking in the changing landscapes through a train window or feeling the sea breeze on your face atop a ferry, slow travel is an intentional, sustainable, and transformative way to embrace the Scandinavian ethos and get to know the world around you better.

Sustainability

Sustainable development is on top of the global agenda for the 21st century. In Denmark and Europe, strategizing sustainability initiatives is a priority, from energy consumption to food production. Experience new approaches to sustainability from a European perspective and hear from the stakeholders shaping today’s and tomorrow’s agendas.

DIS offers need-based and diversity scholarships, as well as merit scholarships

We also partner with Fund for Education Abroad (FEA), which dedicates funds for DIS students, offering awards up to $5,000 per semester to U.S. undergraduates with financial need who are traditionally underrepresented in education abroad.

Never be embarrassed by your financial situation. DIS is aware of low-income students’ need for scholarships, and are willing to help. I have gotten so much support since I’ve been here, and it all started with asking.”
