DEPOZIT SPOMIENOK

Výstava manželov Moniky a Bohuša Kubinských „Depozit frontovej línie“, ktorá sa uskutočnila na prelome rokov 2014 a 2015 v priestoroch At Home Gallery v Šamoríne, je voľným pokračovaním, rozvinutím a doplnením predchádzajúceho spoločného projektu výtvarníkov „První linie/Front Line“.

(Túto monumentálnu inštaláciu vystavili v júni až auguste 2014 v pražskom Centre súčasného umenia DOX.) Vlajkovým motívom oboch výstavných počinov, a zároveň ich spojivom sa stala reflexia vojny; kľúčovým „médiom“, do ktorého bolo koncentrované umelecké posolstvo, zas ohromné betónové škrupiny – autentické guľové bunkre z obranného valu nemeckej ríše zachované z čias druhej svetovej vojny.

Sedem surových betónových gulí ohlodaných zubom času a znejasnených v hmle spomienok, ktoré boli inštalované v hlavnej sále At Home Gallery – bývalej šamorínskej synagógy, tvorí len časť výstavy „Depozit frontovej línie“. Tou druhou je „knižnica denníkových záznamov“, priestorovo-maliarska inštalácia vystavená na druhom poschodí galérie – na galérii ženskej časti bývalej modlitebne. Medzi oboma časťami tak vzniká dvojstranný, vzájomne obohacujúci dialóg. Pritom v ňom na seba narážajú viaceré perspektívy. Sochárske vyjadrenie tak strieda prenikavé maliarstvo, mužský pohľad na vec ten ženský a monumentálnosť autorského gesta zas subtílna naliehavosť komornej tvorby. V spoločnom konzistentnom autorskom projekte sa tak jasnými náznakmi dajú vycítiť individuálne vklady oboch umelcov, sochára Bohuša a maliarky Moniky.

V prípade šamorínskej inštalácie „Depozit frontovej línie“ je dôležitou esenciou čas, v prenesenom zmysle jeho uchovávanie v pamäti. Pamäť sa tu vrství hneď v niekoľ kých rovinách. Na prvý pohľad je zreteľne prítomnou primárna pamäť kolektívna až faktuálna, reprezentovaná procesom rozpamätávania – spomienkami a naliehavými pripomienkami vojnových udalostí, ich kritických momentov a dramatických dôsledkov. V dôsledku výrazného časového odstupu ide o spomienky sprostredkované, nepriamo importované do vlastnej pamäti. V druhej rovine sa výstavou prelína zážitková pamäť, rezervovaná exkluzívne pre autorku a jej osobné denníkové záznamy krátkodobých spomienok. Monika Kubinská ich vytvárala priamo počas procesu projektu a na základe ich impresií následne maľovala drobné plátna, vystavené v časti „knižnica denníkových záznamov“. Nimi sa vyrovnávala s hrozivou stiesňujúcou témou vojnových spomienok, koncentrovala naliehavosť zážitkov v emotívne komponovaných, vrstvenými technikami stvárňovaných obrazoch. Prostredníctvom nich svoju privátnu pamäť prenáša priamo na diváka.

Napokon, divákovi celkom ukrytá je osobná pamäť autorská, pamäť strednodobej perspektívy, pamäť, z ktorej sa na povrch dostávajú osobné spomienky výtvarníkov. Výstava „Depozit frontovej línie“ nie je len nositeľ kou primárneho umeleckého obsahu. Je tiež svojráznou formou autorského návratu: manželia Kubinskí v priestore šamorínskej synagógy vystavovali spoločný projekt pred pätnástimi rokmi, a tak sa v prípade aktuálnej výstavy tiež obracajú na svoju vlastnú minulosť v pomaly blednúcich spomienkach.

A DEPOSIT OF MEMORIES

Monika and Bohuš Kubinský’s exhibition “Front Line Deposit”, which took place on the cusp of 2014 and 2015 at the At Home Gallery in Šamorín, is a loose continuation, development, and supplementation of their previous joint project entitled “Front Line” (this monumental installation was on exhibit from June to August 2014 at the DOX Centre for Contemporary Art in Prague). The leitmotif of both exhibitions, and simultaneously their connecting element, is a reflection of war; the key “medium” concentrating their artistic message were once again huge concrete spheres – authentic “Kugelbunkers” from the German Reich’s defensive lines from World War II. The seven raw concrete spheres, ravaged by time and obscured by the fog of memories, that were installed in the main space of the At Home Gallery – a former synagogue, are only part of the “Front Line Deposit” exhibit. The second part is a “library of diary entries”, a spatial painting installation on the gallery’s first floor – what was once the synagogue’s women’s section.

A mutually enriching dialogue thus arises between the two parts of the exhibition, where several perspectives meet.

Sculptural expression thus alternates with painting, a male perspective with a female one, and a monumental artistic gesture with the subtle urgency of intimate work. In this joint, consistent artistic project, we can thus perceive clear signs of the individual contributions of both artists, Bohuš the sculptor and Monika the painter.

In the case of the “Front Line Deposit” installation in Šamorín, time is an important essence, in a figurative sense, its preservation in memory. Here, there are several layers of memory. At first glance, a collective, even factual memory is clear, represented by the process of remembering – memories

and urgent reminders of wartime events, their critical moments and dramatic consequences. Due to the amount of time that has passed, these memories have been mediated, imported into one’s own memory.

On another level, the exhibition is imbued with experiential memory, reserved exclusively for the artist and her personal diary entries containing short-term memories. Monika Kubinská recorded them right during the project’s process, and based on these impressions she then painted small canvases that are exhibited in the “library of diary entries”. Through them, she came to terms with the menacing and depressing subject of wartime memories, and concentrated the urgency of her experiences in emotively composed, layered painting techniques. In this way, she transfers her private memory directly to the viewer.

Finally, entirely hidden to the viewer is the artist’s personal memory, mid-term memory, memory from which the artists’ personal memories surface. The “Front Line Deposit” exhibition is not just a vehicle for primary artistic content. It is also an idiosyncratic form of artistic return: the Kubinskýs exhibited a collaborative project in the Šamorín sysnagogue fifteen years ago, and so in the case of the current exhibition, they are also turning to their own past, ensconced in slowly fading memories.

Informácia vstupujúca do nášho očarenia z inštalácie Kubinských nutne vyvoláva protichodné emócie a otázku, či tu neexistuje konflikt medzi ex post vnímanou krásou týchto objektov a ich pôvodnou funkciou zapojenou do mašinérie vojny? Toto napätie si uvedomíme o to viac, že sa nachádzame v synagóge, ktorá by za normálnych okolností, ak by počas vojny neprišlo k vyvraždeniu tisícov obetí holokaustu, bola i naďalej sakrálnou stavbou – modlitebňou, a nie galériou.

MEDZI ETIKOU A ESTETIKOU Niekoľ ko poznámok k inštalácii Moniky a Bohuša Kubinských

Sedem masívnych, čiastočne deštruovaných betónových objektov umiestnených na podlahe synagógy môže v divákovi vyvolať na prvý pohľad dve protichodné emócie. Na jednej strane je estetické potešenie podobné tomu, ktoré zažívame pri kontakte s vydarenými dielami minimalistického umenia.

I tu, v At Home Gallery sme konfrontovaní s objektmi, ak sa na inštaláciu dívame výlučne cez optiku použitého surového betónu a opakujúcej sa ovoidnej formy, ktoré pre nás môžu reprezentovať samotnú esenciu abstraktnej plastiky. Nie je to len tvar, ktorý vďaka svojej konkrétnosti, a súčasne neurčitosti dokáže vyvolať celú škálu asociácií, ale rovnako materiál a miera jeho deštrukcie odhaľujúca fragmenty kovovej konštrukcie, na ktorú bol nabalený betónový plášť, jeho štruktúra a odtiene zemitej farebnosti. Paradoxom, na ktorý nás upozorňuje názov inštalácie „Depozit frontovej línie“, je skutočnosť, že to, čo na nás tak emotívne pôsobí, nie sú artefakty, ale technické objekty súvisiace s obrannou líniou, tzv. „Südostwall“, ktorú vybudovala nemecká nacistická armáda počas druhej svetovej vojny od „Malých Karpát cez

Podobným procesom, na začiatku ktorého bola fascinácia z náhodného objavu, museli prejsť aj Monika a Bohuš Kubinskí, keď v roku 2012 v kalových poliach v Seredi našli, vyzdvihli a preniesli do ateliéru prvý z týchto podivuhodných objektov.

Pátrajúc po ich pôvode a funkcii zistili, že majú v rukách materiál, ktorý nie je ani primárnou formou vyrobenou pre konkrétny účel, ani sekundárnym estetickým objektom, ale predovšetkým symbolickým predmetom, ktorého význam je utváraný stopami historickej pamäte. Uvedomili si, že ak majú divákom ponúknuť tento celostný spôsob ich čítania, musia vytvoriť inštaláciu, ktorá bude postavená na sieti kontextuálnych odkazov. Už prvá prezentácia v pražskom DOXe konfrontovala fragmenty obrannej línie Südostwallu s náznakovou rekonštrukciou zákopového valu z prvej svetovej vojny, pričom tematizácia nezmyselného vojnového zabíjania bola umocnená silným príbehom českých vojakov bojujúcich za Rakúsko-Uhorsko na talianskom fronte. S iným, ale rovnako emotívnym príbehom sa stretávame na pôde šamorínskej synagógy. Na rozdiel od bielej galerijnej kocky, synagóga – a to aj vtedy, ak už neslúži svojmu pôvodnému účelu – nie je neutrálny priestor a veci v nej umiestnené strácajú imunitu voči jej minulosti, tej vzdialenej i nedávnej. Myslím okrem iného i na sugestívne inštalácie, ktoré koncom 90. rokov v tomto priestore už tematizovali vojnu a holokaust – surové železničné podvaly Ilony Németh symbolizujúce cestu na smrť, stovky cestovných kufrov v spoločnej performancii Ilony Németh a Juraja Bartusza hovoriace o večnom židovskom nomádstve, drobné kamienky s fotografiami obetí holokaustu Ľuba Stacha...

V tlačovej správe k výstave sa píše: „Spodná časť – veľ ká sála modlitebne, prenesie diváka na ,bitevné pole’ pomocou maskulínnej inštalácie...“ Prívlastok maskulínny je vzhľadom na účel objektov adekvátny. Samozrejme, vojny sú primárne záležitosťou mužov, ale dôležitejšia je skutočnosť, že sú jedným z dôsledkov civilizačného nasmerovania západnej kultúry, ktorú ovládajú myšlienky permanentného pokroku, technických objavov a revolúcií, a predovšetkým mocenských ambícií človeka. Inštalácia Kubinských je však v konečnom dôsledku opakom tohto mentálneho nastavenia a z môjho pohľadu je skôr feminínna. Nie preto, že na poschodí, v galérii, ktorá bola v synagóge pôvodne vyhradená ženám, vystavuje Monika svoj maliarsky denník, ale predovšetkým preto, lebo úloha, ktorú výtvarníci prijali, minimalizuje ich vlastný akt tvorby. S istou dávkou pokory a empatie prijali úlohu byť médiom, cez ktoré prehovára rozporuplná minulosť.

BETWEEN ETHICS AND AESTHETICS Several notes regarding Monika and Bohuš Kubinský’s exhibition

At first glance, seven massive, partially destroyed concrete objects placed on the floor of a synagogue could elicit two conflicting emotions in the viewer. On the one hand, there is aesthetic pleasure similar to what we feel when coming into contact with well-executed works of minimalist art. Here too, at the At Home Gallery, we are confronted with objects, if we look at the installation exclusively from the perspective of their raw concrete and repeating spherical forms that for us could represent the very essence of abstract sculpture.

It is not only the shape, which thanks to its simultaneous specificity and generality is capable of eliciting an entire range of associations, but also the material and the degree of its construction, revealing fragments of steel mesh onto which the concrete layer was applied, its structure and shades of earthy colour. The paradox to which the name of the “Front Line Deposit” installation alerts us is the fact that these things that are making such an emotive impression on us are not artefacts, but technical objects related to defence lines, the “Südostwall”, built by Nazi Germany’s army during Word War II from the “Little Carpathian Mountains through Bratislava, along Burgenland and Styria (the Reich’s border with Hungary), through Lower Styria and the uplands (today Slovenia to the Slovene-Croatian border) to the Adriatic”1.

Information entering our enchantment with the Kubinský’s installation necessarily elicits conflicting emotions and the question whether there is a conflict between the ex post perceived beauty of these objects, and their original function as part of the machinery of war. We realize this tension all the more through the fact that we are in a synagogue, which under normal circumstances, if during the war thousands

of Holocaust victims had not been murdered, would have continued to serve as a religious structure – a place of prayer, and not a gallery.

A similar process, at the beginning of which stood the fascination of a chance discovery, must have been experienced

by Monika and Bohuš Kubinský when they first found these remarkable objects in sludge fields by Sered, extracted them, and brought them to their studio. When investigating their origin and purpose, they found that they were in possession of material that was neither a primary form manufactured for a specific purpose, nor a secondary aesthetic object, but above all a symbolic one, whose significance is created by traces of historical memory. They realized that if they are to offer viewers an integrated way to read them, they must create an installation built on a network of contextual references. Already during their first presentation at Prague’s DOX Centre, the fragments of the Südostwall defensive line were confronted with the symbolic reconstruction of World War I trench wall, with the theme of senseless wartime killing being amplified by the powerful story of Czech soldiers fighting for Austria-Hungary on the Italian Front. At the Šamorín synagogue, we encounter a different, but equally emotive narrative. As opposed to the white cube of the gallery, a synagogue – even when it no longer serves its original purpose – is not a neutral space, and things placed in it lose their immunity to the past, remote and recent. Among other things I have in mind the suggestive installations on the subject of war and the Holocaust that were held here at the end of the 1990s – the raw flatbed rail cars by Ilona Németh symbolizing the road to death, hundreds of suitcases in Ilona Németh’s and Juraj Bartusz’s joint performance speaking of the eternal wandering of the Jews, Ľubo Stacho’s pebbles with photographs of Holocaust victims…

The press release for the exhibition says: “The lower part – the synagogue’s great hall, takes the viewer to the ‘battleground’ using a masculine installation…” The adjective “masculine” is adequate given the objects’ purpose. Wars are of course primarily a male affair, but more important is the fact that they are one of the consequences of Western culture’s civilizational direction, which is dominated by ideas of permanent progress, technical discoveries and revolutions, and above all the human lust for power. However, in the end, the Kubinský’s exhibition is the opposite of this mental attitude, and from my perspective is rather feminine.

Not because Monika is exhibiting her painter’s diary upstairs in a gallery of the synagogue originally reserved for women, but first and foremost because the task that the artists accepted minimizes their own act of creation. With a certain amount of humility and empathy, they accepted the role of a medium through which a contradictory past speaks.

Výstava „Depozit frontovej línie“ v synagóge v Šamoríne je rozdelená do dvoch častí. Mohli by ste ich priblížiť?

Ako sú rozdelené a čo predstavujú?

Bohuš Kubinský (BK): V našich spoločných projektov sa dá vždy vycítiť mužský a ženský princíp. Snažili sme sa to rovnako dodržať aj prípade inštalácie „Depozit frontovej línie“. Celá inštalácia je teda rozdelená na dve polovice; dole v hlavnej sále sa nachádza jej „mužská“ a hore na poschodí zas „ženská“ časť.

Toto delenie však nie je celkom striktné. Tak ako sa vzájomne prelína naša tvorba, badať prieniky ženských a mužských princípov aj tu. Je tu teda betónové pole – masívny tvar „kugelbunkrov“, a v nich čosi jemné. Zvukové strojčeky, ktoré sú nositeľmi akustiky – akéhosi vnútorného hlasu. Predstavujú ženský prvok. Na druhej strane, v časti Monikinej maliarskej inštalácie na poschodí badať mužské motívy. Pre jej cyklus pláten som napríklad zhotovil výstavnícke stojany – ťažké, takmer vojnové konštrukcie.

NAČÚVANIE VNÚTORNÝM HLASOM

Monika Kubinská (MK): Motív stojanov v časti „knižnice“ vychádza z našej snahy dostať klasické závesné obrazy do priestoru. Nechceli sme narúšať maľ bu synagógy. Bohuš teda dostal úlohu vyriešiť to po konštrukčnej stránke. Spomínané delenie na mužskú a ženskú časť je len prirodzenou reakciou na daný priestor. Synagógy sú vždy delené na mužskú a ženskú časť. Je to tak aj v prípade synagógy v Šamoríne. Keď človek vstúpi na poschodie galérie, doslovne cíti ženskú energiu. Cíti, že tu boli prítomné ženy, modlili sa a mali svoje túžby. Ja sama vnímam, akoby som tam bola s nimi – prežívam to, čo prežívali ony. Ich energia človekom preniká, akoby sa s ním rozprávali.

Svojím výstavným projektom „Depozit frontovej línie“, site-specific inštaláciou vytvorenou pre jedinečné priestory galérie súčasného umenia At Home Gallery v synagóge v Šamoríne, tematizujú výtvarníci manželia Monika a Bohuš Kubinskí motívy vojny a historickej pamäte. Rečou veľ korysej umeleckej inštalácie nastavujú zrkadlo súčasnej reflexii dejinných výjavov oboch veľ kých vojen. V rozhovore vysvetľujú, aké impulzy ich k výstave priviedli a aké motívy v nej zachytávajú.

BK: Rozdelenie výstavy na dve vzájomne prepojené časti je navyše podobné predchádzajúcemu projektu „První linie/ Front Line“ z pražského DOXu. Tam sme pomocou kugelbunkrov a metafory zákopov vytvorili spodnú časť, ktorá mala náprotivok na poschodí galérie v spomienkovej a dokumentárnej inštalácii Kataríny Štinglovej, Pavla Štingla, Leoša Války a Michaely Šilpochovej. Časť „knižnice“ na galérii v šamorínskej synagóge je tiež spomienkou. Nie však spomienkou dokumentárneho charakteru, ale záznamom

osobných pocitov – namiesto denníkov vojakov sme tu využili Monikine vizuálne denníky a ich maliarsku interpretáciu. Šamorínska synagóga má navyše jednu významnú vlastnosť – neskutočne krásny strop s maliarskou výzdobou, ktorý obe spomínané časti prepája do jedného súdržného celku.

Na projekte ste pracovali spoločne – ako manželsko-autorský tím. K spoločným projektom väčších mierok ste sa vrátili po dlhšom čase. Čo je na tejto spolupráci prínosné?

Ako sa konštruuje partnerstvo sochára a maliarky?

MK: Od začiatku našej spolupráce sme vedeli, že urobíme tri spoločné projekty a skončíme. Nechceli sme sa zbytočne opakovať, radšej začať niečo iné. To bolo pred pätnástimi rokmi a týkalo sa to troch inštalácií: „Znenie ticha“ v kaplnke sv. Jána v Bratislave, trnavského projektu „Story“, a napokon „Hall“ pripraveného pre At Home Gallery – synagógu v Šamoríne.

Výstava „Depozit frontovej línie“ je vlastne návratom do synagógy po veľmi dlhej dobe, počas ktorej sme pracovali na vlastných projektoch.

BK: Tak ako som spomínal, v našich prácach sa vzájomne ovplyvňujeme, a myslím, že sa to dá zreteľne vycítiť. Dá sa postrehnúť mužský a ženský princíp, ale aj princíp prítomného sochárskeho a maliarskeho uvažovania. Myslím si, že táto konštelácia je mimoriadne prínosná. Spolupracuje sa nám totiž veľmi dobre. Vo vzájomnom partnerstve si zároveň nastavujeme zrkadlo. Napríklad, keď sa v mojej práci začína objavovať prílišná doslovnosť, príde Monika a trochu to zdrsní.

Platí to aj opačne.

Výstava „Depozit frontovej línie“ je voľným pokračovaním pražskej inštalácie „První linie/Front Line“.

Aký majú obe súvis?

BK: Obe výstavy prepája motív kugelbunkrov. Keď sme objavili tieto zaujímavé sochárske tvary, hľadali sme spôsob, ako ich využiť v umeleckej inštalácii. Hľadali sme pre ne priestor – uvažovali sme napríklad aj o inštalácii pre bienále v Benátkach.

Jediné dva priestory, ktoré sa nám napokon zdali vhodné a reálne, boli DOX a šamorínska synagóga. Na oboch výstavách sme potom pracovali paralelne.

V prípade projektu „Depozit frontovej línie“, ktorý prebehol

v krátkom čase po pražskej výstave v DOXe, sme sa snažili posunúť inštaláciu o čosi ďalej. Nechceli sme len jednoduché opakovanie DOXu. To sa, samozrejme, ani nedalo. Chceli sme, aby projekt v synagóge nebol len o samotných kugelbunkroch a vojnovej histórii. Ako protiváhu sme teda zostavili knižnice, ktoré fungujú ako výsostné umelecké dielo.

Jadro inštalácie tvoria fragmenty delostreleckého opevnenia – škrupiny kugelbunkrov. Čím vás zaujali a aká bola ich minulosť?

BK: Prvé betónové škrupiny takzvaných kugelbunkrov sme objavili zarastené v kalových jamách. Zaujala nás na nich čistá sochárska esencia – ten tvar. Ja ako sochár chodím po svete s otvorenými očami. Vnímam proporcie a rozmery vecí.

V momente, keď som zbadal tieto ohromné betónové gule – v priemere majú meter a pol –, ostal som nimi fascinovaný.

Po dohode so správcom areálu sme dve z nich opatrne preniesli do nášho depozitu. Začali sme uvažovať nad projektom, kde by sme ich využili. Medzitým však začali s rekultiváciou spomínaných kalových polí a pri tej príležitosti sme zachránili aj ďalšie. Vo väčšom množstve sa ešte výraznejšie prejavila ich výtvarná sila. Náš pocit pri vystavení škrupín kugelbunkrov potom tkvel v tom, že si vyžadujú len veľmi jemný zásah – umelecké gesto.

MK: Na tento jemný akustický zásah sme prišli viac-menej náhodne. Keď boli škrupiny gulí zložené v našej záhrade, fúkal vietor a vznikla v nich nádherná rezonancia. Vedeli sme, že s nami vedú rozhovor – akoby sme počuli šepot pamäte zvnútra gule. V predchádzajúcich projektoch sme využívali vyspelé technológie a akustiku. V tomto prípade sme však zámerne použili niečo jednoduché. Niečo, čo by predstavovalo vojnovú reč. Prvý nápad vychádzal z toho, aby sme do gulí umiestnili predmet, ktorý si vojak mohol zobrať so sebou – nejakú vojnovú hračku či hudobný strojček. Miniatúrne „hracie skrinky“ sme umiestnili na steny gulí pomocou akýchsi baníckych vežičiek. Lákajú návštevníka, aby sa s nimi pohral a ozvučil tak vnútrajšok. Umenie by malo byť hrou.

Ako máme čítať „Knižnicu Depozitu frontovej línie“?

Tieto maľ by vznikli na základe denníkových záznamov.

Dokážeme z nich poskladať nejaký príbeh?

MK: Táto časť výstavy je pocitová – mala som potrebu vyjadriť sa k témam, ktoré ma zaujímajú. Od začiatku som mala jasnú predstavu o tom, že chcem dostať obrazy do priestoru, a zároveň ich rozdeliť do určitých častí. Knižnica je teda koncipovaná do štyroch častí, rozdelených podľa farieb. Prvá strana knižnice plynie v parížskej modrej. Tá je venovaná Verdunu. Druhá strana je čistá biela; je venovaná žene prostredníctvom atribútov ženských korzetov, vankúšov, anjelských krídel a lupeňov. Oproti nej sa nachádza šedá časť a celý cyklus končí štvrtou stranou v čiernej farbe. Tá je venovaná druhej svetovej vojne, a keď že dielo bolo umiestnené v synagóge, v tejto časti sa zaoberám otázkami koncentračných táborov, židovských pochodov, ale aj fragmentmi judaík. Ešte sa vrátim k šedej časti, ktorá by mala najviac komunikovať so súčasným svetom. Jej posledná „kapitola“ je venovaná čínskej výtvarníčke a poetke Liu Xia, ktorá je od roku 2010 držaná čínskym režimom v domácom väzení a nesmie komunikovať so svetom. S jej tvorbou som sa po prvýkrát stretla práve v DOXe a rozhodla som sa, že je pošlem odkaz. Knižnice by mali viesť dialóg navzájom, s divákom aj s autorom. Každý obraz je vytvorený inou technikou – podobne ako aj v knižnici každá kniha prináša iný príbeh. Ide o koncepčne presné zachytenie rozličných pohľadov na určitú tému. Každý obraz – dohromady ich je sedemdesiatjeden – je očíslovaný, dokonca opečiatkovaný (akoby katalogizovaný), a má v knižnici svoje presné miesto.

Prečo ste si ako tému pre svoje umelecké dielo vybrali vojnu?

MK: Vojna je utrpenie a trpí ňou aj výtvarník. Obe inštalácie boli naším posolstvom o tom, ako prebehla prvá a druhá svetová vojna. Oficiálne sa síce skončili, no my to vnímame tak, že skončili len pre tých, ktorí neprežili. Svojím spôsobom však pokračujú aj v súčasnosti, a tak sme sa pokúsili otvoriť ľuďom oči. Ak si to uvedomí aspoň jeden návštevník, výstava splnila svoj účel.

LISTENING TO YOUR INNER VOICE

In their “Front Line Deposit” exhibition project, a site-specific installation created for the singular premises of the At Home Gallery, a synagogue in Šamorín converted to a contemporary art gallery, the husband and wife art team of Monika and Bohuš Kubinský deal with motifs of war and historical memory.

Through the language of a large-scale art installation, they reflect the current perspective on the historical scenery of both world wars. In this interview, they explain what motivated them to create this exhibition and what motifs it contains.

The “Front Line Deposit” exhibition at the synagogue in Šamorín is divided into two parts. Could you describe them? How are they separated and what do they represent?

Bohuš Kubinský (BK): In our joint projects, one can always distinguish the male female principle. We tried to achieve this in the case of the “Front Line Deposit“ installation as well. The entire installation is thus split into two halves: down in the main hall is its “male” part, and up on the first floor its “female” one. But this division is not a completely strict one. Just as our artwork is a combination, here too one can sense the mingling of female and male elements. We thus have a field of concrete – the massive shape of the “Kugelbunkers”, and in them something delicate. Tiny music boxes that represent a sort of internal voice, that represent the female element. On the other hand, in part of Monika’s painting installation up on the first floor, one can see male elements. For example, I created exhibition stands for her canvases that are heavy, almost military structures.

Monika Kubinská (MK): The motif of stands in the “library” part is based on our effort to place classical hung pictures in the synagogue. We didn’t want to interfere with its wall decorations. Bohuš was thus given the task of coming up with a design. The aforementioned division onto a male and female part is just a natural reaction to the given space. Synagogues are always divided into men’s and women’s sections. This is also the case for the Šamorín synagogue. When one enters the gallery floor, one literally feels a female energy. That there were women here, who prayed and had their desires. I myself feel as if I were there with them – I experience what they did.

Their energy infuses you, as if they were speaking to you.

BK: Division of the exhibition into two mutually interconnected parts is very similar to our previous project “Front Line” at DOX in Prague. There, using the kugelbunkers and metaphors for trenches, we created a bottom part that had a counterpart on the gallery mezzanine in a documentary installation by Katarína Štinglová, Pavel Štingl, Leoš Válka and Michaela Šilpochová. Part of the “library” in the gallery of the Šamorín synagogue is also a memory. But not a memory of a documentary nature, but a recording of personal feelings – instead of soldiers’ diaries, we used Monika’s visual diaries

and their painterly interpretation. The Šamorín synagogue has one more important characteristic – an incredibly beautiful painted ceiling, which joins both aforementioned parts into one integral whole.

You worked on the project together – as a husband and wife artistic team. After a longer period of time, you’ve thus returned to joint projects of a larger nature.

What are the benefits of this collaboration? How does one build a partnership between a sculptor and a painter?

MK: From the beginning of our collaboration we knew that we’d do three joint projects and that would be it. We didn’t want to repeat ourselves needlessly, and preferred to start something new. That was fifteen years ago, and concerned three installations: “The Sound of Silence” at St. John’s Chapel in Bratislava, the “Story” project in Trnava, and then “Hall”, which was prepared for the At Home Gallery at the Šamorín synagogue. The “Front Line Deposit” exhibition is actually a return to the synagogue after a very long time, during which we worked on our own projects.

BK: As I mentioned, we influence each other’s work, and I think that one can clearly recognize this. One can see the male and female principle, but also the principle of sculptural and painterly thinking. I think that this constellation is an exceptionally beneficial one, because we work together very well. In our partnership, we serve as mirrors to each other.

For example, when my work starts becoming too literal, Monika comes along and roughens it up a bit. This works both ways.

The “Front Line Deposit” exhibition is a loose continuation of the “Front Line” installation in Prague. How are they related?

BK: Both exhibitions are joined by the motif of kugelbunkers.

When we discovered these interesting sculptural shapes, we searched for a way to utilize them in art installations. We looked for a space for them – we for example even considered an installation for the Venice Biennale. The only two spaces that in the end seemed both suitable and realistic to us were DOX and the Šamorín synagogue. We worked on both exhibitions in parallel. In the case of the “Front Line Deposit” project, which took place shortly after the Prague show at DOX,

we tried to advance the installation a bit further. We didn’t want just a simple repetition of DOX, which of course wasn’t even possible. We didn’t want the project in the synagogue to be just about the kugelbunkers themselves and about war history. As a counterpoint, we thus created libraries that function as sovereign works of art.

The core of the installation consists of fragments of artillery fortifications – kugelbunker shells. What was it about them that captivated you, and what is their origin?

BK: We discovered the first concrete shells, so-called kugelbunkers, grown over in sludge pits. We were captivated by their pure sculptural essence – their shape. As a sculptor, I walk around with my eyes open. I perceive the proportions and dimensions of things. As soon as I saw these huge concrete spheres – they’re a metre and a half in diameter – I was fascinated by them. After coming to an agreement with the manager of the grounds, we transferred two of them carefully to our storage facility. We began thinking about a project in which we would use them. In the meantime, they began to recultivate the sludge fields, and we salvaged more of them.

In greater numbers, their artistic force was even more prominent. Our feeling in exhibiting the kugelbunker shells then rested in the fact that they require only a very fine intervention – an artistic gesture.

MK: We came upon this fine acoustic intervention more or less by chance. When the kugelbunkers were in our yard, a wind was blowing and they were resonating beautifully. We knew that they were conducting a conversation with us – as if we were hearing the whisper of memories from inside the spheres.

In previous projects, we used advanced technologies and acoustics. In this case, however, we purposely used something simple. Something that would represent military language.

The first idea was based on putting an article in the sphere that a soldier could have taken with him – some military toy or musical instrument. We placed tiny “music boxes” on the walls of the spheres, using these miniature mining towers.

They entice the visitor to play with them and bring sound their interior. Art should be playful.

How should we read the “Front Line Deposit Library”?

These paintings were created based on diary entries.

Can we assemble them into some sort of a story?

MK: This part of the exhibition is emotional – I needed to express myself on subjects that interest me. From the beginning, I knew that I wanted to bring the paintings into the space, and also to divide them up into certain parts. The library is thus conceived as having four parts, each with a different colour. The first side is Paris blue. It is devoted to Verdun. The other side is pure white: it is devoted to woman through the attributes of women’s corsets, pillows, angel wings, and petals.

Opposite it is the grey part, and the entire series ends with the fourth side, which is black. It is devoted to World War II, and because the work is installed in a synagogue, in this part I deal with concentration camps, Jewish marches, but also with fragments of Judaica. Getting back to the grey part, it should most communicate with the contemporary world. Its last “chapter” is devoted to Chinese artist and poet Liu Xia, who has been kept under house arrest by the Chinese regime since 2010, and is forbidden from communicating with the world.

I encountered her work for the first time at DOX, and decided to send her a message. The libraries should lead a mutual dialogue, with the viewer and with the author. Each painting is created using a different technique – just like in a library, each book brings a different story. It is a conceptually precise recording of different perspectives on a certain theme. Each painting – there are 71 in all – is numbered, and even stamped (as if catalogued), and has its precise location in the library.

Why did you choose war as the subject of your artwork?

MK: War is suffering, and artists suffer in it too. Both installations were our tidings of how World War I and II took place. Officially, they may have both ended, but the way we see it is that they ended only for those who didn’t survive. In their own way, however, they still continue today, and so we attempted to open people’s eyes. If at least one visitor realizes this, the exhibition will have achieved its purpose.

Táto nezávislá a nezisková galéria vznikla v roku 1995 pôvodne v šamorínskom byte jej zakladateľov Csabu a Suzanne Kissovcov. Odtiaľ teda pochádza jej meno „At Home Gallery“. V roku 1996 manželia Kissovci premenili nevyužívanú a schátranú synagógu v Šamoríne na centrum súčasného umenia. Galéria organizuje umelecké výstavy, koncerty, performancie a iné kultúrne podujatia, pozýva umelcov a kurátorov zo Slovenska i zahraničia, iniciuje nadregionálnu spoluprácu a kultúrnu výmenu. Mnoho z uskutočnených výstav bolo vytvorených ako „site-specific“ inštalácie koncipované priamo pre nezvyčajný historický priestor židovskej synagógy. „At Home Gallery“ je v súčasnosti známa ako jedno z popredných centier súčasného umenia na Slovensku.

This independent non-profit gallery was opened in 1995, in the home of its founders Csaba and Suzanne Kiss in Šamorín, thus the name “At Home Gallery”. In 1996, Csaba and Suzanne Kiss transformed the unused and dilapidated synagogue in Šamorín into a centre for contemporary art. The gallery holds art exhibitions, concerts, performances, and other cultural events, invites artists and curators from Slovakia and abroad, and initiates trans-regional cooperation and cultural exchange.

Many of the exhibitions have been created as site-specific installations conceived directly for the unusual historical interior of the synagogue. The “At Home Gallery” is currently one of the leading centres of contemporary art in Slovakia.
