What does “Get Involved” mean? Getting involved can take many forms and is uniquely defined by every individual, group or student organization. Active involvement in your hall council, joining student organizations, student employment or planning campus events and programs are some examples of getting involved with your campus community. It means becoming engaged with your academic priorities, but also reserving some time for growth outside of the classroom.

Why Get Involved?

Research suggests that students who are involved on campus tend to have better grades, retention and graduation rates and have a more enjoyable college experience overall. Though the University of Michigan can feel intimidating due to its large size and wide-range of resources and opportunities, becoming involved with student organizations, study groups, university departments and initiatives can quickly transform this anxiety into comfort, and inevitably open doors to bigger opportunities. You will begin to establish relationships, create connections, hone your skills and define your Michigan Experience.

Involvement Tips:

Don’t be afraid to try something new: Stepping outside of your comfort zone is one of the most effective ways to learn more about yourself and any hidden interest you did not know you had. Your time at Michigan is a great opportunity to take a risk and try something new. The outcome might surprise you.

Explore academic interests: The University of Michigan is home to many student organizations that have an interest in exploring a wide range of academic and career-related interests. Perhaps you are looking to explore more majors or change your existing area of study; joining an organization in your field of interest is a great way to learn before committing to a major or registering for classes. 2

Choose opportunities made for you: Some students get involved in groups because of friends, family or other external pressures. This is your chance to explore what you are interested in, do something different and shape your own experience. Now is the time to network and surround yourself with people with similar interests. Find a balance: First and foremost, you are here to graduate! You will learn the value of finding a balance between academics, work, extracurricular involvement and good physical and mental health. Establishing this balance requires sacrifice as well as reserving time for personal reflection to assess your current involvement trends.

Where to Start: ●● This Get Involved Magazine is a great way to start to learn about the opportunities available to you. However, as you may find out, this only captures a fraction of the opportunities available. ●● Browse Maize Pages for detailed information on organizations you are interested in becoming involved with. Read their constitution, membership requirements, meeting schedules, etc. Visit Maize Pages at: www.studentorgs.umich.edu/maize ●● Take the Student Interest Survey at

https://studentorgs.umich.edu/survey to get personalized suggestions based on your interests. (log-in required)

●● Attend “Fests!” Festifall, Northfest and Winterfest

are annual student organization information fairs. They are held on the Central Campus Diag, North Campus Diag and in the Michigan Union respectively. Visit: www.studentorgs.umich.edu/fests for more information.

●● Talk to your advisor, they may have some insight on academic organizations suitable for your academic interests.

●● Attend a Mass Meeting, These informational sessions

generally offer great insight into the culture, mission and goals of an organization with no commitment to join. You might just discover the perfect student organization for you.

Social Fraternity-Sorority Established in 1845, the University of Michigan prides itself on one of the oldest, largest, and strongest Greek communities in the nation. Opportunities for friendship, scholastic support, leadership, and service are numerous and significant. 67 fraternities and sororities, with over 4700 students, participate through membership in one of four councils. The Office of Greek Life, a unit in the University of Michigan Division of Student Affairs, provides professional staff who assist Greek-letter organizations in supporting their goals. The office also connects students with inter/national headquarters staff, alumni, parents, city officials, and university faculty and staff.

The Panhellenic Association (Panhel):

The National Pan-Hellenic Council is the umbrella organization for the historically African-American fraternities and sororities on the University of Michigan campus. The council’s purpose is to promote unity, expose members to the “service for life” philosophy, and foster leadership development and scholarship. A social outlet is provided through the Ice Breaker held each semester, as well as, the Open House, Step Show, and individual organization events.

The Panhellenic Association, established at Michigan in the first decade of the 20th century, is the organization that strives to unite National Panhellenic Conference sororities and work for their common goals. Each sorority elects a delegate to serve on the Panhellenic Council that meets weekly during the school year, sharing information, discussing issues of concern and interest, and voting on policies and procedures. Ten women are elected to serve on the executive board.

Research has shown that students who are involved outside the classroom earn higher grades, are more satisfied with their college experience and are better prepared for life after college. The Offices of Student Activities & Leadership (SAL) and University Unions Arts & Programs (UUAP) comprise a dynamic, studentfocused department that serves undergraduate and graduate students campus wide, as well as the university at large, through its programs and services. The department is a part of University Unions, an organization within the Division of Student Affairs that enriches University life through multiple facilities, services and programs. Our focus is to strengthen student involvement by building community through student programs within student union facilities and throughout campus, and to recognize the vital role of student leaders and their organizations in promoting cultural, social, academic, professional development and leadership activities on the University of Michigan campus.
