Welcome to Michigan! For some, life before college was pretty comfortable: you enjoyed home-cooked meals, parents did your laundry, and you slept in the same bed you’ve had since childhood. At a large institution like the University of Michigan, college can be intimidating and overwhelming! You are in a new environment, surrounded by thousands of new people, and presented with seemingly endless opportunities and resources. It is common to feel nervous about these exciting new opportunities presented to you. In fact, being nervous is a good thing! This means you are exploring areas outside your comfort zone-and getting a bit uncomfortable can be the first step in one of the most important journeys of your life: discovering what is truly important to YOU. Seizing opportunities that are in-line with your interests is the best way to make yourself feel at home and make the university seem smaller. Maintaining an open mind and open ears can be fundamental. Allowing yourself to ask new questions, listen to new words and consider new ideas. “Social justice,” “community service,” “culture,” “leadership,” and “student government” are just a few examples of the concepts you may hear about and want to explore further. These things may sound interesting, but how do they relate to you? How can you learn and develop from these concepts? It’s simple:

Student Organizations!

The University of Michigan has over 1,100 Student Organizations that have been created by students and for students. Members of each group unite around a common mission to make an impact on campus, in the community, and around the world. And with so many options here at The University of Michigan, there is likely a student organization that is a perfect fit for you! Ask questions, active members are eager to answer them and introduce their group. The process of getting started can be broken down into three simple steps:

1. 2. 3.

Ask yourself what your interests are. Get informed. Reach out and GET INVOLVED!

Before you know it, you will become the next passionate member eager to introduce your student organization to the incoming class and the University of Michigan will feel like home. Good luck and welcome to Michigan! “Not only does getting involved in student organizations help relieve the stress of academic life at U of M but it also allows you to find a place where you can fit in and thrive at the University while inspiring others to do the same!” -Rachel Wilson, Senior, Verve member

Go to Mass Meetings. Ask your friends about their involvement. Ask your academic advisor, each school/ college has opportunities. Ask your Resident Advisor. Look at the Kiosks, Diag Boards, and Bulletin Boards in your Residence Hall. Follow your interests. Search Maize Pages to browse organizations. Attend Festifall, NorthFest and Winterfest. If you can’t find an organization that you like, start your own! Read Get Involved!

ask yourself Do I want to explore something new? What am I looking for in an organization? Do I want to work on something I believe in? Am I primarily looking to become more social? Do I want to be of service to the campus or community? Should I be in a group that relates to my major or career? Should I continue an interest from high school? How much time do I have for an organization? Do I want to help make things happen? Do I want a break from academics? Are there financial considerations?

Not Just a Number By: Eugene Yen, 2010 Michigan Leadership Awards Outstanding Student Leader Congratulations on being accepted to, and choosing, the University of Michigan!

Having spent the last eight years in Ann Arbor and being affiliated with the University, there have been ample opportunities for me to become apart of the Michigan community. Some of these opportunities have shaped me into the person I am today. These opportunities were available to me because of one number: my UMID. If you have not already been assigned a UMID#, you soon will. This number, which is incorporated on your Mcard next to a mug-shot-like photo of yourself, will become as memorable as your cell phone number. You will use this number in almost all aspects of your life from getting your meals, accessing the gym and buildings, taking tests, registering for classes, etc. This number is your identity. Even though your UMID# can open many doors for you both figuratively and literally, it can also serve as a powerful barrier. This 8-digit number can make you feel, well, very much like “just a number.” It is a constant reminder that you are attending a school with thousands of other students equal in talent, work ethic, and creativeness. How does one become a “leader and best” among so many other leaders?

A remedy to this feeling of ennui is to simply get involved. This can mean joining an organization, playing IM sports, or volunteering for an effort you believe in. I regret not getting involved as an undergraduate. Thinking back at all the missed opportunities is heart breaking. It wasn’t until graduate school where I decided not to sit back and be another number. Since then, I have realized that I am defined not by my achievements in the classroom, but by the programs and the volunteer opportunities I choose to devote my time to. Being fortunate enough to find a passion in food, nutrition, and sustainability I began volunteering at educational programs teaching children about the origins of their food and how to eat healthier through cooking demonstrations. I now realize that it is possible for one University to have so many leaders. It takes the ongoing effort and commitments of incoming students like yourselves to continue to pursue your interests and strive to be the leaders the admissions committee envisioned when they read your application. My advice to you, class of 2014: don’t be another number! Join a club, try something new, pursue passions beyond the classroom, leave your mark, and get involved!

What Would You Stand For? By: Kay Ball Associate Director of University Unions, 2010 Michigan Leadership Awards Advisor of the Year Each year, several hundred University of Michigan students ask themselves this question and the answer is to raise funds for and awareness about pediatric rehabilitation. As a member of Dance Marathon at the University of Michigan, DMUM, students participate in a yearlong schedule of events and activities centered on raising funds and awareness about pediatric rehabilitation. DMUM is one of the largest studentrun non-profit organizations on the University of Michigan’s campus. The funds raised are allocated for pediatric rehabilitation programs at C.S.Mott Children’s Hospital at UM and Beaumont Hospital in Royal Oak. These creative and interactive therapies enrich the lives of children, their families, and their communities. Several years ago, I was invited to attend the opening ceremony at the marathon, which is the final event of the year. Within five minutes of witnessing the overwhelming enthusiasm and energy Dance Marathon students have for their cause, I was asking how I could volunteer to help them in any way that they thought I could! The following year I was asked to be their staff advisor and, without reservation, I accepted.

Each DMUM student has the opportunity to meet and interact with their DMUM family, several of whom have been in the program since it began. The students invite their family to events planned and executed by DMUM throughout the year which range from a pajama party to pumpkin carving to a formal ball. The final event, the thirty hour marathon, is the place where it all comes together. Several of the DMUM families speak at the marathon about the difference the creative, interactive therapies have made in their lives. While I have been fortunate to work directly with several students who have held the office of Executive Director during my five years as advisor, the experience I am most grateful for is being able to see and understand the impact DMUM has had on the lives of the children and families who benefit from the therapy programs directly funded by DMUM. The level of commitment and dedication from every dancer, every moraler, every member of their central planning team and the many volunteers and donors that are involved in the organization is amazing! Within DMUM, there are so many opportunities for leadership and skill building.

Critical thinking, teambuilding, organizational development, and fundraising skills are necessary for the Executive Director and the Central Planning Team to be successful. The organization does an extraordinary job of succession planning and the transition each year to a new central planning team is seamless. Immediately following the marathon, applications and interviews begin for the following year. Along with planning, executing events, awareness building and fundraising, the central planning team is always looking at ways to expand, reorganize, and build on the success of prior years. They are currently building a strong alumni base and many, many past DMUM students come back each year for the marathon. I was honored and excited to be invited to join DMUM as their advisor and I have learned so much from the students I have worked with. They are the most talented, humble, sincere, dedicated students and the families that benefit from their involvement are so grateful. Every student I have met through DMUM tells me how the organization has changed their life and it has had the same impact on me.

Many of us came to the University with the goal of repeating the academic success we knew in high school. I’ve found that to meet my preconceived standard for academic excellence, I’ve had to make big sacrifices in other areas of my life. When the intimidating newness of college wears off and we finally start to feel at home with a set of classes, a group of friends and a social routine, it’s easy to lose our initial curiosity. Despite the complacency that comfort invites, I need to self-motivate my exploration. The posters and chalk advertisements that decorate the Diag and almost every available wall space are a testament to the endless supply of extracurricular educational resources on campus. I couldn’t possibly take advantage of all of them — but if I make a habit of ignoring the activity around me, I’ll miss out on the most accessible pool of potential inspiration I’m likely to ever encounter. Gaining self-knowledge is the most serious benefit of exposing myself to the variety of stimulus packed into this college town. Beyond simply allowing the flashing lights to pass before my eyes on my way out of here, I must internalize the relationships, the guest lectures, the concerts and the people watching. I need to allow the energy of Ann Arbor to resonate with me in order to gain an understanding of the kind of energy I want to create for myself when I no longer have it flowing around me, waiting to be tapped. We’re here to ask ourselves what kind of people we want to be, what kind of lives we want to lead and what kind of impression we want to make on our communities. The only way we’ll be able to answer those questions is by engaging our environment and paying attention to the kind of reaction we have to that engagement. Our potential for success — the kind that guarantees a fulfilling life — is at its peak and unless we make a conscious effort to correct our semi-distorted measures of a successful college experience, it will pass by unmet. I hope that as the change of the seasons breathes life back into Ann Arbor, I can revitalize the wide eyes and anxious excitement that I felt during my first September here. These are not only supposed to be the four best years of our lives, but they can also be the four most transformative years. If we waste them on daily panic attacks in the stacks, we’ll have lost the opportunity absorb the richness —academic, cultural and interpersonal — that surrounds us.
