SPX BAND REVITALIZES UNDER NEW DIRECTOR GET TO KNOW ROBERT CARLIN Robert Carlin is the band and orchestra director at St. Pius X High School. Prior to joining St. Pius X, he was a band clinician, private brass and percussion teacher, and judge for many school districts in the area and state. Carlin has an all levels bachelor of music education degree from Sam Houston State University. He is a member of the Texas Music Educators Association, Texas Private School Music Educators Association and the Texas Bandmasters Association. He taught in Ganado ISD for two years, Katy ISD for
seven years and Cypress Fairbanks ISD for 22 years. Carlin has worked with bands that have advanced to the UIL 5A Area Marching, UIL 2A State Marching and UIL 4A Finalist State Marching Contests. His concert bands have received numerous 1st divisions and sweepstakes trophies for the UIL Concert and Sight-Reading contests. His students have advanced to the UIL 5A State Honor Band Finalists. Carlin has been the summer band camp manager for Sam Hous-
ton State for the past 18 years, and has been associated with the camp since 1973. He has taught many band directors, private teachers and performers in the Houston area. He was the treasurer for the Region 27 High School Band Division. Carlin has a wife Amanda, daughter Lindsey, son-in-law Billy Gideon and son Cameron. He has played in many brass and percussion ensembles all over town, and was an original charter member of the Bull Pen Pep Band for the Houston Texans.
SPX EARNS STATE OUTSTANDING FRONT ENSEMBLE AWARD On Sept. 30, the St. Pius X High School band, choir and Beppo's Bells competed in the 2014 TAPPS State Drumline Contest at Waco ISD Stadium in Waco, Texas. St. Pius X received the State Outstanding Front Ensemble Award for Division I schools. Members of the SPX drumline are Lucas Jones, Jason Carranza, Nicolas Villasana, Miles Bentley, Grace King, Robert Coghlan and Kevin Taylor-Jarrell. The Beppo's Bells members were Isaac Mackzum, Chase Gorman, Edith Escobar and William Hernandez.
On Saturday Oct. 25, junior Leonard Marrufo was selected to the Texas Music Educators Association All-Area Orchestra on cello.
