FROM THE HEAD OF SCHOOL

Celebrating our Legacy Embracing our Future

Ask any St. Pius X student what the Four Pillars of Dominican Education are and how they practice them, you will find they have ready answers for prayer, study, community and preaching. At the foundation of our mission are all four of these pillars. We begin and end each school day with prayer, celebrate feasts and solemnities of the Saints, go on retreat, and gather together monthly as an entire school faith community to celebrate the liturgy of the Eucharist. One assumes high school students study, expanding their breadth of knowledge and learning how to think for themselves; and in the myriad of campus activities, ministries, teams, clubs, and lunch table comradery, our students build and experience community at its best. But what of preaching?

The first three pillars enable the pillar of preaching. This past fall semester the pillar of preaching was, once again at the forefront of the SPX experience. The Dominican charism of preaching embraces more than words from the pulpit. Dominicans use their God-given gifts and talents for the good of the community as preaching is birthed in varied ways. Students who serve as members of our Dominican High School Preaching Team can often be heard sharing this phrase; “Where do Dominicans preach?” –“Where don’t they!”

Within this issue of Pius News are stories that capture the voices, narratives and the “preaching” that defined the Fall semester of the 2022-23 school year. You will read about the return of our Grandparent’s Day event, where we welcomed hundreds of students’ grandparents to campus for a special morning. You will read a student-written reflection on the annual 9th grade retreat, in which our newest Panthers experienced class bonding and spiritual growth. You will also see the fruits of our superb fine arts, athletics, and academic programs in the form of College Board recognitions, athletic scholarships, and wonderful Veritas Theatre productions.

Our community has accomplished tremendous things! There is so much to be proud of and so much to look forward to as we usher in another semester. It is through the outpouring of heartfelt, collaborative support that we continue to provide the unique and exceptional Veritas education for our young men and women. I am confident that the future holds great things for our school, our students, our alumni, and each of you – our St. Pius X High School family!

With gratitude and in prayer,

Fish Week 2022

Fish Week is a decades-old tradition that gives Seniors a chance to welcome Freshmen to the Panther family in fun and creative ways. Once “hooked” with their Senior buddy, our Freshman Fish got into the Panther spirit with “We’re Dressing It Up” day, the “We Go Together” Parade, and a fantastic pep rally that celebrated our Sports, Pantherettes, and Cheer Teams. Fish Week finished strong with a great football win and school dance. This year’s group of Seniors and Freshman Fish did not disappoint!

Open House

In December 2022, we welcomed many prospective families to campus. After a welcome from our student ambassadors, Principal, Rachel Ware, and Head of School, Sr. Donna Pollard, O.P., families were guided around our campus to take in the beauty of our historic halls, new additions, and view presentations prepared by SPX co-curriculars, academic departments, and athletic groups. We are grateful to the faculty, students, staff, and parent volunteers who made this event such a resounding success.

A new addition to our event this year was a panel with faculty, current parents, and current students. Families were able to hear each unique perspective about the benefits of the SPX experience. Current students and parents agreed that the small classroom sizes and supportive community made for an amazing transition into college preparatory education.

Feedback from attending families was overwhelmingly positive, and we look forward to welcoming the class of 2027!

DEVOTED MEMBERS

Leaders in Veritas

At St. Pius X High School, we are blessed to have devoted members of our community that we call Leaders in Veritas. These members believe in our four pillars, core values, Dominican heritage, and have made St. Pius X High School a priority in their charitable giving. We had the honor of getting together with this dedicated group at the home of Erik and Roberta Konicki to discuss the past, celebrate the present, and envision the future of our beloved school.

THE BEAUTY OF OUR SCHOOL

Liturgies

Students, faculty, and staff gathered for three liturgical services in the fall, honoring the Feast of Our Lady of the Rosary, The Solemnity of All Saints, and the Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception.

In Roman Catholic tradition, these days are considered holy days. We are extremely grateful to our visiting priests who came to SPX to celebrate the Holy Mass, especially Fr. Marty Lott, O.P., Fr. Robert Murphy, S.J., and Fr. Wayne Lee. We would like to extend additional gratitude to our Theology department, Dominican Preaching team, altar servers, and choirs for serving with a generous spirit at these services.

Students served in various liturgical ministries for Mass, including lectoring, altar serving, and music ministry. On the Feast of Our Lady of the Rosary, students and faculty/staff led the attending community in a decade of the Rosary in their heart language. The beauty of our school liturgies is a testament to the selfless work of many. St. Pius X, pray for us!

Freshmen Retreat

Featuring student writer, Maggie Veech ‘24

St. Pius X High School is a school rooted in Dominican tradition. Each year, students have a spiritual retreat centered around one of the four Dominican pillars: Prayer, Study, Community, and Preaching. Retreats are led by members of faculty, staff and 18 upperclassmen. Many of these students are on the Dominican Preaching Team, a group that leads the faith activities on campus.

On September 20th, the freshmen retreat was held at Christ the Good Shepherd Catholic Church. This retreat takes place at the beginning of the year so the new freshmen class can start building community and create a foundation they can use throughout high school.

Hello! My name is Maggie Veech and I am a junior at St. Pius X High School. I am on the Dominican Preaching Team, play tennis, and serve as an Ambassador for the school. I have always been interested in writing, because it is such a creative outlet and I am excited to be able to share some of my works by reporting on the happenings at St. Pius. I am a native Houstonian and a big Astros and Aggie fan. One thing I love about living in Houston is all the different types of restaurants we have and all the city has to offer.

Students participate in icebreakers, talk about what it means to be a part of the SPX community, and begin to build relationships as a class. They participate in an interactive activity to learn about the life of St. Dominic, and what it means to be a Dominican school. It is one of the first opportunities for the whole class to bond with new people.

It is such a great thing to see the freshmen come together as a community, and start to build their new SPX family that they will have throughout their high school years.

HONORING OUR STUDENTS

Academic Excellence

On October 19, 2022, we honored twelve students who have earned academic honors from the College Board National Recognition Programs. These individuals are amongst the 62,000 students from across the country to earn academic honors from the College Board’s National Recognition Programs! These students were treated to a special reception prior to liturgy and recognized following the service in the school

National African American Recognition Award recipients: Oluyemisi Bolarin ‘23, Vincent Doucet ‘23, Victoria Hunter ‘23, Ethan White ‘23. National Hispanic Recognition Award recipients: James Avant Jr ‘23, Olivia Martinez ‘23, Nicolas Juge Aires ‘24, Juan Pablo Contreras ‘24, Adrian Narvaez ‘24, Brian Ortiz ‘24, Giselle Prat ‘24, Nicole Rojas ‘24.

Stephanie Birkelbach ‘23 was selected as a National Merit Semi Finalist. In the annual National Merit Scholarship Program, about 50,000 academically talented high school students are honored, but only some 16,000 of them are named Semifinalists. Stephanie Birkelbach is among the top 1 percent of high school students who entered the National Merit Scholarship Program by taking the Preliminary SAT/National Merit School Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT) during her junior year.

Update: in Spring 2023, Stephanie Birkelbach ‘23 was named a National Merit Finalist!

Fall Athletic Recaps

Volleyball

SPX Volleyball worked through a rebuilding campaign, as the Panthers battled through tough competition all year. However, the season was not without its bright spots as several players earned postseason recognition. Zoe Humphrey ‘24 shined for St. Pius X, earning All-State and All-Academic honors. Brianna Lewis ‘23 and Sophie Sharp ‘26 also obtained Honorable-Mentions for their impressive performances.

With multiple returning players, the team looks forward to a resurgence as a contender next year!

Cross Country

SPX Cross Country had a rock-solid 2022 season, with stalwarts improving and new talent breaking through. Led by Anna Bordas ‘23, several runners were consistently in contention at highly competitive meets. Bordas would finish 10th overall in the TAPPS 6A Championship, and the Boys team would land two finishers in the top 20 for a 9th place finish overall. As multiple runners experience their first full offseason, this team is one to watch next year!

Football

In the Fall 2022 season, SPX Football made inroads to converting their massive potential, advancing to the Regional Finals for the first time in four years! While their early season form carried moments of turbulence, the Panthers saw sparks from key players that foreshadowed late-season success.

Starting the District schedule with two big wins, the Panthers fought through a difficult stretch and needed a win in a pivotal game against Central Catholic. In a back-and-forth game, the Panthers proved their mettle and secured the upset. While their season would come to an end against State Finalists Prestonwood Christian, their fight never wavered in a season that showed progress towards contention. Go Panthers!

CATCHING UP WITH

Bez Jez ‘89

Tell us how life has changed since you left SPX.

A lot has happened sine I left SPX in the spring of 1989! I moved to Austin and graduated from The University of Texas with a Bachelor’s Degree in Business Administration and majored in Marketing. I wasn’t sure what I wanted to do, but I knew I enjoyed working with people from all different backgrounds, so sales and marketing seemed a natural field to study. I worked in inside sales for Dell Computers before moving back to Houston when I got engaged.

In my search for the right position, I used a placement agency to help me interview with local companies. The recruiter suggested a small company that specialized in placing technical talent in the field of Human Resources (HR). After 2.5 years at a small company, I was ready to move on to something bigger, and I was happy to accept a role as a Technical Recruiter at Compaq Computers (Now HP Inc.)

From there, I spent 20 years developing my HR skillset in university relations, compensation, workforce planning, employee engagement, and ultimately, partnering with leaders as an HR business partner on their executive teams. In mid 2020, I joined a Finland-based energy company, where I partner with their America leadership team here in Houston.

How did your SPX education prepare you for college?

I felt very prepared for college after my SPX education. I learned study skills that helped me all throughout college.

What advice would you share with recent SPX graduates?

The top 3 items I would advise anyone going to university are:

1. Take the time to meet your professors/teaching assistants. Even if you are doing well in a class, they are a source of networking for you throughout your time at college and potentially when you are interviewing for jobs.

2.Find people to study with. You are not alone, and you don’t have to go through those classes by yourself. Having

someone or a group to challenge you, support you in the same ways you are challenging them makes the experience so much more rewarding.

3.Take Business Finance and Economics classes, especially if you are not in a business degree plan. You will be so much better off knowing how for-profit and non-profit companies work and make money. That knowledge will help you no matter what job you have at a company or even if you go into business yourself!

Tell us about your profession.

The profession of Human Resources is broad. It can range from being very detail-oriented like managing benefits and payroll, employee data reporting and analytics, to more instructional like training, facilitating and course development. It can also be a consultative and coaching role where you guide employees and leaders through business challenges.

What has it been like to return to campus?

I started coming back to SPX when our sons were in grade

Pius News FALL 2022
stpiusx.org 16

school at St. Ambrose. It was a great experience to see the new buildings, but to also get that same feeling of comfort and home walking down the main hall. Zach and Zander have now both graduated from SPX. We spent many hours during those years in the stands on the baseball field, cheering at cross country and track races, and supporting them in all of their other extracurricular activities.

What first interested you in your career path?

I really fell into HR! It wasn’t something I had thought of in high school or college. However, I’m glad it found me; it is the right mix of engaging with people and getting to know their story, working with them to develop their career paths, and coaching them on their learning journey in their leadership roles.

What is the best part of your job?

The best part for me is helping others realize their potential; when a leader has an “ah-ha” moment, and they realize their employee’s success is their success.

What is one of of your favorite memories of SPX?

I had lots of great memories throughout my years there, like organizing and running Middle School Academic Rallies, winning state in softball, and getting stuck in a winter storm at our Senior Retreat. However, the most memorable was our prom. We had prom on a paddle boat in Galveston Bay and got to watch Ms. Bollom and Mr. West on a date - who later were married! We spent the night on the island and woke up for sunrise Mass on the beach with Fr. Mike.

What were you involved in as a student at SPX?

I played basketball, volleyball, and softball. I was an officer in National Honor Society and I participated in several other groups: Student Cabinet, Beppo Squad, Computer Club, Math Club, and Yearbook.

What is one of the most important lessons you took away from SPX?

Everyone has a different story; take the time to get to know them. We all came from different backgrounds, but created a family and community by coming together. Beyond high school, you need that patience and perspective. I’m glad SPX gave me the opportunity to experience that small diverse community to set me on the right path.

What does it mean to you to be an SPX alumna?

Being a part of the SPX alumni community means living the Dominican values that were taught to us. Taking the time time to give back to the community, to share your faith with others, to welcome and appreciate others from different backgrounds, and to carry on and support Catholic education. I take pride in saying I am an SPX alumna, and even more special that our sons are now alumni as well. Together, we will further these traditions.

What do you enjoy doing outside of work?

My husband, Sean, and I enjoy volunteering and fundraising for St. Pius X High School and St. Ambrose. We also like entertaining with friends and family, wine tasting, and traveling. My favorite thing is doing them all together!
