HOMECOMING! (AND ILLNESS, UGH!)
By the Very Rev. Sam Candler, Dean of the Cathedral
Welcome to Homecoming 2024 at the Cathedral Parish of St. Philip! Thank you for being with us this Sunday, August 11, as we resume our program year of renewed education and community, renewed mission and outreach, renewed worship and music—and renewed health!
I hope that various members of our community have had an opportunity for some rest and renewal this summer. I know that not everyone is able to get away for a few days during the summertime, but many of us do. I hope you return to the Cathedral refreshed!
However, I must admit that my own time away this summer did not go so well. Some of you have heard, correctly, that I became quite sick during the month of July. I returned from General Convention in Louisville with some sort of sore throat and strained voice. Several of you recognized that during the blessing of the Peachtree Road Race. As fun as that event was, it left me feeling a bit drained this year, and my voice got worse. Having tested negative for covid, I traveled to Ontario, Canada, and was ready to be with family. But my throat and voice became much worse. In the space of three weeks, I had to visit rural emergency rooms twice. About two weeks ago, I finally had a severely infected and swollen throat abscess drained. My recovery has not been quick, and my voice is still recovering; but I am not contagious!
Well, so go the illnesses of our lives. None of us welcomes sickness, and we are rarely prepared for it. But illness comes upon us, and we deal with it as we can. I pray that each of us has had a supportive community, a good group of friends, during the illnesses of our lives.
Sometimes, God even speaks a special message to us during our weakness and vulnerability. Though I am obviously a priest, I have as hard a time hearing God as anyone does. Yet, I hope I heard God reminding me of the importance of sacred community during my illness. I was certainly aware of Cathedral staff praying for me. And I was definitely grateful for friends and family driving me long distances to two different hospitals! I was grateful for family tending me, night and day. Weakness reminded me, yet again, that we need each other.
Yes, I know that this summer brought illness to others in our community. Somehow, covid came back! Ugh! So far, I am thankful that none of the covid cases in our community was too severe. But it was still a hassle.
It is time for health! It is time for renewal! I am thankful that the Cathedral of St. Philip, besides being a beautiful community, is itself a ministry of health and renewal. We welcome the sick, and we welcome those who need healing. And, at some point or another, each of us is one of those who need healing.
Our parish, the Cathedral of St. Philip, has a history of being a restorative community. The world needs places that stand for long-term health and restoration. We have gone through various illnesses in our wider community, too. But we have come through, with the strength and energy of truly good faith.
The way we come through illness (and come back from illness!) with good faith is our tradition. Thank you for good faith! Thank you for good health! Thank you for holy community! See you this Sunday, August 11, 2024!

Adult EDUCATION
*Most of these classes resume Sunday, September 8. Join us at the ministry fair this Sunday, August 11!
UPCOMING FALL PROGRAMMING
Old Fashioned Sunday School
Sundays, Child Hall, 10:10 a.m.
The fall election season promises to be a trying time for all of us, regardless of political disposition. The heightened energy of the campaigns causes us to feel like we need to have opinions on things we don’t really understand, to argue until the person in front of us concedes that we’re right, and to stop seeing those who don’t. The result is pervasive disconnection. Elizabeth Oldfield, the host of the Sacred podcast and former director and now senior fellow of the think tank Theos, offers a way for us to stay connected. In her new book, Fully Alive: Tending to the Soul in Turbulent Times, Oldfield explores how religion helps us to develop deep principles and values that help us grow in empathy and curiosity for people different from ourselves. Canon Maxwell will lead a discussion that looks more deeply at Oldfield’s insights and explore how they might play out in our lives. Copies of the book may be purchased in the Cathedral Bookstore.
Living
Faith
Sundays, Room 239, 10:10 a.m.
Join us as we explore what it means to live out our faith through conversation with scripture and tradition, contemporary books, and one another. During the fall of 2024, the class will discuss David Brooks’ powerful How to Know a Person: The Art of Seeing Others Deeply and Being Deeply Seen. All are welcome to join this engaging class! For more information, please contact Canon Julia Mitchener, julia.mitchener@cathedralATL.org.
Young Professionals Formation Hour
Sundays, 10:10 a.m., Room 368
Our Young Professionals group meets on Sunday mornings during the formation hour. We gather to explore our Episcopal traditions and discuss various relevant, faith-based and spirituality related topics. All young adults in their twenties and thirties are welcome to join the conversations. No advance preparation is required. During the program year, this class meets Sunday mornings at 10:10 a.m. in room 368 on the third floor. For more information about this class, please contact: The Rev. Salmoon Bashir, sbashir@cathedralATL.org, or Keith Dumke, Director of Young Adult Ministry, kdumke@cathedralATL.org.
Enjoy Biblical Greek!
Sundays, Room 239 and on Zoom, 1:15 p.m.
This newcomer-friendly class is open to beginners, while including long-term members who enjoy exchanging tips, best learning practices, and coaching points on how to translate the Greek New Testament. The goal is enhanced Bible study, not language mastery.
Cost-free, online resources are provided, in addition to traditional grammar aids, lexicons and commentaries, that yield immense satisfaction in discovering how the Greek text reveals nuance and depth in scripture.
Provided on a drop-in basis, first-time visitors need no previous knowledge of Greek. Classes typically begin with reciting the alphabet, pronunciation practice, and accessible grammar instruction prior to a half-hour or so of collaborative, rewarding translation.
This class meets Sunday afternoons from 1:15-2:45 p.m., inperson in Room 239, and also via Zoom. Please contact the Rev. Dr. Thee Smith for more information.
Thursday Evening Book Study with Canon Julia Mitchener
Thursdays, Cathedral Bookstore, 6 p.m.
Join us in the Cathedral Bookstore on Thursdays from 6-7 p.m. for good company and good conversation. This fall’s selections will include Never Enough: When Achievement Culture Becomes Toxic—And What We Can Do About It by Jennifer Wallace and Evicted: Poverty and Profit in the American City by Matthew Desmond.

PASTORAL Care
THE MINISTRY OF EUCHARISTIC VISITS
Help us stay connected with one another by becoming a Eucharistic Visitor or receiving Eucharistic Visits!
Eucharistic Visitors (known informally as EVs) are parishioners who take the consecrated sacrament from our Sunday morning Eucharists to individuals who cannot currently attend services in person. These trained lay ministers carry with them not only the Body of Christ but also Christ’s Body, the Church. They take with them our prayers for one another and our bonds that transcend space and time.
This is an incredibly meaningful ministry for everyone involved.
Why might someone become a Eucharistic Visitor? This is an important and very meaningful ministry, not only for those being visited but also for the visitors. Eucharistic Visitors find that this ministry helps them put their faith into practice, develop their gifts for pastoral ministry, and deepen their own faith.
Why might someone request a visit from an EV? Certainly some recipients of this ministry have been homebound for a long period. Others, though, might appreciate a visit from an EV because:
• They have a newborn or infant in their household and are sticking close to home for a while.
• They are staying in because they (or others in their household) are immunocompromised and need to avoid large gatherings.
• They have limited mobility for a while due to surgery, injury, or recent illness.
If you would like to learn more about becoming an Eucharistic Visitor or about receiving visits, please contact Hillary Jones, hjones@cathedralATL.org or 404-365-1038, or Canon Cathy Zappa, czappa@cathedralATL.org.

There are many ways in which to get involved with our youth program as a volunteer leader. Please consider volunteering to support our programs and events throughout the 2024-2025 program year. Many hands make for a lighter load for all. Here are a few of the opportunities:
• Sunday School teacher during the formation hour on Sunday mornings
• Sunday evening EYC adult leader
• Tuesday evening Bible Study leader
• Retreat chaperones throughout the year
• Confirmation adult small group leader/teacher
• Parent Advisory Board
• Supply dinner for Sunday evening EYC
Our youth need committed, affirming adults from all backgrounds to serve as mentors, teachers, and role models. Come and share in this rewarding ministry! Please reach out to Keith Dumke, kdumke@cathedralATL.org to ask questions and learn more.

Each week you will find an abundance of fresh, locally grown produce, meat, eggs, flowers, prepared foods, and artists with wood, glass, textile, and metal arts, and much more. The market also purchases excess produce from the farmers and it is distributed at Intown Cares’ farmers market table on Tuesdays and Saturdays.
