AN ANNUAL REMEMBRANCE OF JOHN DONNE
by the Very Rev. Sam Candler, Dean of the Cathedral
March 31 is upon us again, and I take another opportunity to remember John Donne; his feast day is March 31. Donne is one my personal heroes, because he was what I aspire to be: a strong poet and a devoted dean (though he was a brilliant poet!). He died as dean of St. Paul’s Cathedral, in London, in 1631.
Here is the quick review: Brought up a Roman Catholic just after the English Reformation, John Donne (born 1573) did not intend to become a priest or a theologian. He studied law and apparently had a way with women. His early poetry surely reflected that tendency, and his is still held as an example of superb love poetry! (Read the bawdy “To His Mistress On Going to Bed”!) When he fell in love with (the young) Anne More, her family did not give consent to a marriage, and so he eloped with her. Her father, therefore, threw Donne into prison. (He wrote, from prison, the short epigram: “John Donne, Anne Donne, undone.”)
It was only later that their marriage was declared valid. Still later, a friend urged ordination, and so he was ordained in 1615. Sadly, in 1617, his beloved wife died, five days after the birth of their twelfth child together. Donne would go on, however, to become dean of St. Paul’s Cathedral, London, and write some of the most sublime poetry of England.
In times of stress, I read John Donne again. He knew of love and prison and illness. And he wrote deeply and powerfully about the presence of God in all those conditions. When he lay ill in his older years, he wrote (in Hymn to God, My God, In My Sickness):
I joy that in these straits I see my west; For though their currents yield return to none, What shall my west hurt me? As west and east In all flat maps (and I am one) are one, So death doth touch the resurrection.
But Donne may be most well-known by words which ring true, from his Meditation 17, NUNC LENTO SONITU DICUNT, MORIERIS [“Now this bell tolling softly for another, says to me, Thou must die.”]
Perchance he for whom this bell tolls may be so ill as that he know not it tolls for him; and perchance I may think myself so much better than I am, as that they who are about me and see my state may have caused it to toll for me, and I know not that.
The church is catholic, universal, so are all her actions; all that she does, belongs to all. When she baptizes a child, that action concerns me; for that child is thereby connected to that body which is my head too, and ingrafted into that body whereof I am a member. And when she buries a man, that action concerns me.
…As therefore the bell that rings to a sermon calls not upon the preacher only, but upon the congregation to come, so this bell calls us all; but how much more me, who am brought so near the door by this sickness.
…. No man is an island, entire of itself; every man is a piece of the continent, a part of the main. If a clod be washed away by the sea, Europe is the less, as well as if a promontory were, as well as if a manor of thy friend's or of thine own were. Any man's death diminishes me because I am involved in mankind, and therefore never send to know for whom the bell tolls; it tolls for thee.
This year, our greater world—and our greater world leaders—hear the same thing that John Donne knew: no person is an island. We are connected. Sorrow affects us all, and “any person’s death diminishes me because I am involved in humankind.” But love affects us all, too. In both those conditions, may God, our holy and passionate God, touch us wherever we are, in prison or in illness or in sorrow or in love. Batter my heart, three-person’d God!

MUSIC

One of the most profound Sunday 4 o’clock choral services of the year, A Meditation on the Passion of Christ, with Carols, employs lessons and carols, spirituals, anthems, motets, and congregational hymns to illuminate the Passion of Christ, which is retold using biblical narratives from Mark, Matthew, and John, sung to some of the most ancient plainchant known to the Church. It is a deeply meaningful way to step back from the hectic pace of life and enter into Holy Week. The service begins at 4:00 p.m. Sunday, April 13, with prelude music beginning at 3:40 p.m.

CHOIR OF ST. JOHN’S COLLEGE, CAMBRIDGE, ENGLAND
Friday, April 11, 2025 7:30 p.m., Cathedral Nave
The return to the U.S.A. of one of the most celebrated choirs of men and boys in the world—for the first time since adding girls to the top lines—will move and delight listeners! At home in the University of Cambridge, the choir sings six Evensongs and a full Choral Eucharist each week during university term, giving them a facility of musicianship and breadth of repertoire that is truly astounding. Over the past half-century, the Choir has toured independently throughout the world—on many occasions as official representatives of the British government—and released more than one hundred critically acclaimed recordings on international labels. This will be an extraordinary evening, featuring some of the most beautiful treble singing one will ever have the privilege of hearing anywhere!
Presented by Friends of Cathedral Music at the Cathedral of St. Philip. Tickets are available at cathedralATL .org/concerts.

The items requested for the drive are those which are asked for frequently by pantry guests, but rising food costs/availability make them difficult for Intown Cares to keep in stock. Let’s come together to stock Intown’s shelves in this season of almsgiving!
THIS SUNDAY: Shelf-stable milk

Please do not donate expired food. Drop off donations in the bin labeled "Lenten Food Drive" in the Atrium on Sundays or the main entrance breezeway during the week..

STEWARDSHIP
WHY I GIVE: PARISHIONER BRONSON SMITH
Greetings! My name is Bronson Smith, and I am honored to serve as your Cathedral Chapter Treasurer. As a fourth-generation Cathedral member, I am a lifelong parishioner of the Cathedral of St. Philip. My wife, Laura, and I have three children, all of whom were baptized at the Cathedral and have either attended or are currently attending The Cathedral Preschool. Unequivocally, the Cathedral of St. Philip holds a special place in my family’s past, present, and future.

When I think about the Cathedral of St. Philip, my heart is filled with gratitude. It is not just a place of worship, it is a sanctuary where my faith deepens, my spirit finds renewal, and my sense of community flourishes. It truly is the beacon on the hill, offering a sacred space for reflection, connection, and growth in a world that often feels hurried and fragmented. Before becoming Treasurer, I understood the importance of stewardship, but it wasn’t until I took on this role that I truly appreciated its magnitude. While the Cathedral receives some revenue from sources such as facility usage contracts, music services, and the like, a remarkable 80% of our revenue comes from pledges and contributions!
Our budgeting process follows a bottom-up approach, whereby expenditures determine the amount of revenue needed to support the Cathedral’s operations. The Finance Department calculates the costs required to provide our exemplary worship, music, mission and outreach, pastoral care, children and youth ministries, Christian education, and more. From there, it is up to the Stewardship and Gift Planning Department to raise the necessary funds to meet these needs. This cycle repeats every year—and when you think about it, it is truly remarkable. Our gifts are vitally important!
I give to the Cathedral because it is one of the most tangible ways I can express my gratitude for all the Cathedral has given me. Giving to the Cathedral is a joyful act for me. It reminds me that everything I have is a gift from God, and sharing those blessings is a way of saying “thank you.” It is my privilege to be part of a community that does so much good, and I invite you to join me in making an investment in our shared mission.
You can submit your pledge online at cathedralATL.org/pledge. Please contact David Rocchio at 404-365-1033 or drocchio@cathedralATL.org with any questions about pledging.

SIGN UP TO JOIN A FOYERS GROUP
The Cathedral Foyers offers small group dinner opportunities for adults. Members of each group take turns hosting/ providing food for monthly get-togethers from April through September. This is a great way to get to know a handful of people without feeling overwhelmed. Groups are intentionally intergenerational and eclectic. The Super Foyers dinner— where all groups convene to kick off the Spring/Summer session—will be Sunday, April 27 at 6 p.m. in Child Hall. To sign up for a Foyers group for this session, please go to cathedralATL.org/foyers by Monday, April 14.

EASTER FLOWERING OF THE CROSS
All are welcome to participate in this beloved tradition as the cross is brought to life with color and beauty as a living symbol of resurrection. Stop by and place a flower in the cross that will be set up in the Atrium on Easter Sunday, April 20. Bringing something from your own garden is a practice that is certainly welcome, and one that many find especially meaningful.
