The CATHEDRAL TIMES

THE CATHEDRAL FARMERS MARKET IS OPEN!

This past Saturday, March 2, the Cathedral Farmers Market began its 18th season with the traditional blessing by Dean Sam Candler! The Cathedral Farmers Market is a parochial entity of the Cathedral and hosts more than 60 vendors every Saturday, from 8:30 a.m. to 12 p.m. through December 14. The market brings together farmers, artists, and prepared food vendors to provide a “celebration of creation” as Dean Sam Candler has called it. Each vendor is chosen according to market guidelines–specifically they must be committed to using local, sustainable, and ethically sourced goods in their products and must only sell what they have grown, raised, or made themselves.

The Cathedral Farmers Market aims to provide a place where customers can reconnect with the food that they eat and the community where they live. Each week you will find an abundance of fresh, locally grown produce, meat, eggs, flowers, prepared foods, and artists with wood, glass, textile, metal and “all manner of clever human creativities.” The market also strives to build community each week by providing live music, a children’s area with jumbo yard games, eating area complete with kids picnic tables, and the Cathedral playgrounds are open to the public.

The Alliance Theatre sponsors story time for children every second and fourth Saturday at 9:30 and 10:30 a.m. and special events are held throughout the season, such as a free Skin Cancer Screening on May 4. Holiday Artists Markets at the end of the year feature more than 25 local artists each week and free visits with Santa.

The market hosts a different chef pop up every Saturday to sell ready-to-eat foods that customers can either eat on-site or take home. The market is host to many prepared food vendors, making it a great place for meeting neighbors for breakfast or lunch.

The Cathedral Farmers Market participates in programs that provide food aid to our community. For example, the market is a Wholesome Wave Georgia Fresh 4 Less partner market, which means Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) recipients can double their benefits at each visit to the market, doubling their buying power for fresh fruits and veggies, all while supporting local farmers! Stop by the market’s info tent to learn more about doubling SNAP benefits.

The market is also proud to be a drop-off location for Intown Cares, a food pantry serving our neighbors. Drop off your canned and packaged items at the info tent each week. You can also purchase fresh produce from any of our farmers to donate. At the end of the 2022 season, the market began using sponsorship funds to purchase fruits and vegetables from the farmers at the end of each market to donate to Intown Cares. During the 2023 season, the market spent close to $31,000 and purchased 11,850 pounds of fresh produce that were donated to our neighbors.

There are many ways to support the market in addition to shopping weekly with vendors. You can join the team of wonderful volunteers on Saturdays. Your business can sponsor the market or you can donate to help support the market programs. The main use for donated funds is to continue purchasing fresh fruits and veggies from our farmers to donate to the local food pantry and expand our programing. For questions about the market, to sign up to volunteer, or for sponsorship and donation opportunities, please visit cathedralATL.org/farmersmarket. See you Saturday!

“The Screwtape Letters:” A Lenten Look at Life through the Eyes of C. S. Lewis

10:10 a.m., Child Hall

Part of life is being tested. The Lenten season marks the time that Jesus was tested by the devil in the wilderness. C. S. Lewis offers a satirical, but playful and perceptive take on the idea of such testing in The Screwtape Letters. In the letters, the senior devil, Screwtape, advises his nephew and devil-in-training, about how to best sabotage a human being’s attempts to live a faithful, fruitful, beautiful life. Lewis makes us laugh and then makes us cry as we realize how often we get in our own way. We're preparing for Easter this year by talking about some of the themes running through the letters. Canon Maxwell is working from a Lenten devotional titled C. S. Lewis And The Delightful, Diabolical Daring Of Lent: A Lenten Companion To “The Screwtape Letters.”

Living Faith

10:10 a.m., Room 239

Our topic through Lent is “What makes for a meaningful life?” Drawing on the book Life Worth Living: A Guide to What Matters by three scholars from the Yale Institute for Faith and Culture, we're reflecting on some core questions of human existence within the context of our Christian calling and hope. All are welcome!

Say it to God: In Search of Prayer (The Archbishop of Canterbury's Lent Book 2018) by Luigi Gioia

10:10 a.m., Room 368

In Say it to God , Luigi Gioia provides a welcome encouragement to all those who feel the need to freshen their practice of prayer. For Gioia, prayer is not about methods or techniques, but trusting that God is truly interested in everything that happens to us and wants to hear about it. This book leads the reader into the theological aspects of prayer and how it relates to Christ, to the Holy Spirit and to the Church.

Enjoy Biblical Greek!

1:15 p.m., Room 239 and on Zoom

Provided on a drop-in basis, first-time visitors need no previous knowledge of Greek. Please contact the Rev. Dr. Thee Smith, tsmith@cathedralATL.org, for more information.
