FROM THE LITURGY FOR ASH WEDNESDAY THE BOOK OF COMMON PRAYER Dear People of God: The first Christians observed with great devotion the days of our Lord's passion and resurrection, and it became the custom of the Church to prepare for them by a season of penitence and fasting. This season of Lent provided a time in which converts to the faith were prepared for Holy Baptism. It was also a time when those who, because of notorious sins, had been separated from the body of the faithful were reconciled by penitence and forgiveness, and restored to the fellowship of the Church. Thereby, the whole congregation was put in mind of the message of pardon and absolution set forth in the Gospel of our Savior, and of the need which all Christians continually have to renew their repentance and faith. I invite you, therefore, in the name of the Church, to the observance of a holy Lent, by self-examination and repentance; by prayer, fasting, and self-denial; and by reading and meditating on God's holy Word. And, to make a right beginning of repentance, and as a mark of our mortal nature, let us now kneel before the Lord, our maker and redeemer. Silence is then kept for a time, all kneeling. If ashes are to be imposed, the Celebrant says the following prayer Almighty God, you have created us out of the dust of the earth: Grant that these ashes may be to us a sign of our mortality and penitence, that we may remember that it is only by your gracious gift that we are given everlasting life; through Jesus Christ our Savior. Amen. The ashes are imposed with the following words Remember that you are dust, and to dust you shall return. (The Book Of Common Prayer, pages 264-265)

LENTEN QUIET DAY WITH THE REV. DR. ROBERT WILLIS, DEAN EMERITUS OF CANTERBURY CATHEDRAL February 24, 9:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. Lanier House The Essential Quality of Silence in the Lives of Jesus and the Saints The use of quiet time in our modern world has become more and more vital. In so many ways the noise, busyness and concerns of the world force their way into every part of life by so many different means. It means that "quiet time" has to be programmed into our thinking and praying time. We shall be exploring this aspect of our lives with illustrations and quotations from saints throughout the ages but most importantly in the life of Jesus himself. Join us on this day and explore the gifts of space and silence. The Quiet Day will take place in the Lanier House on the Cathedral campus from 9:30 a.m. – 2 p.m., Saturday, February 24. The cost is $20 and includes lunch. Learn more about the Rev. Dr. Robert Willis and register at cathedralATL.org/quietday. For questions, contact Jeannie Mahood, jmahood@cathedralATL.org, or 404-365-1031.

All Cathedral women are invited to our annual Women’s Lenten Retreat at the beautiful St. Mary’s Sewanee retreat center in Tennessee. The retreat will be led by Canon Lauren Holder. CHOOSE FROM ONE OF THE FOLLOWING PROGRAMS: Book Study with the Rev. Canon Julia Mitchener

The Myth of the American Dream: Reflections on Affluence, Autonomy, Safety, and Power by D. L. Mayfield Cathedral Bookstore Drawing on stories of her family’s life among refugees in Portland, evangelical Christian writer Mayfield invites readers to consider whether the core values of the American Dream are congruent with Jesus’ command to love our neighbors as ourselves. Says the author, “This is a book about paying attention. It’s about being fully alive . . . to the systems and structures and policies that dull our imaginations for a world that truly has hope and good news and beauty for everyone.”

The Nurtured Heart Approach with Mary Hunter Maxwell

Conference Room 239 The Nurtured Heart Approach is a relationship centered way of life that is built upon three stands: Absolutely No!, Absolutely Yes!, and Absolutely Clear! Join Mary Hunter Maxwell in an exploration of the Nurtured Heart Approach on Wednesday nights this Lent. Originally developed to support the parents and caregivers of the most challenging, intense children, NHA has blossomed into a powerful tool that empowers parents, teachers, grandparents, and other caregivers to recognize and celebrate greatness – or what we might call the image of God – in all children (and each other!). We will meet in Room 239 from 6-7 p.m. on February 21, February 28, March 13, and March 20. RSVP at cathedralATL.org/nurturedheart if you plan to attend – this will help ensure there are adequate materials and seating for everyone but last-minute additions are always welcome.

The Chosen Watch Party

Gould Room *Please note this program begins at 5 p.m. The Chosen! The Cathedral’s popular and deeply inspiring video discussion will continue in the Gould Room at 5 p.m., with a meal break at 5:30 for attendees who register for a Lenten dinner in the parish hall (Child Hall) next door. For Lent we will continue to view and reflect on this awesome series of scripture-based stories about Jesus and his first disciples that’s energizing viewers worldwide. Independently you may also watch the entire series or individual episodes at watch.thechosen.tv, download The Chosen app, or search the internet for many reviews and interviews that highlight one of the greatest breakthroughs in Christian media this century. To learn more, or to be added to The Chosen mailing list, contact The Rev. Dr. Thee Smith at tsmith@cathedralATL.org or 404-931-5062.

ADULT Education ADULT EDUCATION THIS SUNDAY Old Fashioned Sunday School The Screwtape Letters: A Lenten Look at Life through the Eyes of C.S. Lewis 10:10 a.m., Child Hall Part of life is being tested. The Lenten season marks the time that Jesus was tested by the devil in the wilderness. C. S. Lewis offers a satirical, but playful and perceptive take on the idea of such testing in The Screwtape Letters. In the letters, the senior devil, Screwtape, advises his nephew and devil-in-training, about how to best sabotage a human being’s attempts to live a faithful, fruitful, beautiful life. Lewis makes us laugh and then makes us cry as we realize how often we get in our own way. We will start preparing for Easter a little early this year and then (with one interruption) proceed through Lent by talking about some of the themes running through the letters. Canon Maxwell continues working from a Lenten devotional titled C. S. Lewis And The Delightful, Diabolical Daring Of Lent: A Lenten Companion To “The Screwtape Letters.” A downloadable PDF is provided in the weekly Old Fashioned Sunday School newsletter and at cathedralATL.org/OFSS. Living Faith 10:10 a.m., Room 239 Our topic until Lent is “What makes for a meaningful life?” Drawing on the book Life Worth Living: A Guide to What Matters by three scholars from the Yale Institute for Faith and Culture, we’ll reflect on some core questions of human existence within the context of our Christian calling and hope. All are welcome! Young Professionals Say it to God: In Search of Prayer (The Archbishop of Canterbury's Lent Book 2018) by Luigi Gioia 10:10 a.m., Room 368 In Say it to God, Luigi Gioia provides a welcome encouragement to all those who feel the need to freshen their practice of prayer. For Gioia, prayer is not about methods or techniques, but trusting that God is truly interested in everything that happens to us and wants to hear about it. This book leads the reader into the theological aspects of prayer and how it relates to Christ, to the Holy Spirit and to the Church. Enjoy Biblical Greek! 1:15 p.m., Room 239 and on Zoom Provided on a drop-in basis, first-time visitors need no previous knowledge of Greek. Please contact the Rev. Dr. Thee Smith, tsmith@cathedralATL.org, for more information.

“Preaching and Living Outside the Box” on Thursday, February 22, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. in Child Hall. Stevens will engage diocesan leaders about breaking boxes that restrict how we preach and live in the marketplaces of our lives. She will share the story of Thistle Farms and what it means to lead with love. She believes that curiosity, commerce, creativity, and courage are signposts that lead to freedom in ministry. She will encourage us in our small acts done with great love that make this blue planet still a place of hope. This event is presented by the Diocese of Atlanta’s Office of Congregational Vitality and is open to all clergy and lay people in the diocese. The cost is $20 and includes lunch; register at cathedralATL.org/Stevens. Please contact Sally Ulrey, sulrey@episcopalatlanta.org, with any questions.
