IN-A-GADDA-DA-VIDA

By the Very Rev. Sam Candler, Dean of the Cathedral When I hear the song, In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida, no matter how expertly or even poorly it might be played, I am thrown back into the briar patch of my teen-aged years. I was actually one of those earnest keyboard players, back in the early rock years, longing for organ riffs that could match the driving electric guitar parts. And some people think the organ part to that song is a brief (very brief) reference to Bach’s Toccata in D minor. So, In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida worked for me. If you don’t know the song, check out some of the early hip hop uses of it. Or, check out the 1995 episode of The Simpsons (titled “Bart Sells His Soul”), where the Reverend Lovejoy is tricked into using the song as an opening hymn. The sheet music that was distributed to the congregation that day was titled, “In the Garden of Eden,” by I. Ron Butterfly. Homer remembers when he “used to make out to this hymn.” Last week at the spectacular “Welcome Home” event of “Cathedral Giving By Design,” there was design galore, for sure; but there was also music galore. Welcoming us in the atrium was the North Atlanta High School Jazz Band again (one of whose members is in our office suite hallway photographs as a youngster!). Outside the parish hall was a great jazz pianist who let me play Duke Ellington’s Take the A Train with him. Then, there was the musical entry to the program itself, which featured a local Atlanta favorite group: “The Seed and Feed Marching Abominable.” Like many of you, I have been delighting in their music for over forty years. I guess one might call them a street band, full of rag-tag fun and energy and music. They know how to play, too! I had heard, from someone or another, that they do not usually play “church events.” Maybe they just don’t want to get tangled up in church things, but I had heard that they intended to depart before “the prayer.” Maybe I heard wrong, but no matter. However, they did depart, before I was able to speak, when I welcomed everyone to the Cathedral of St. Philip. My welcome was the phrase familiar to many of you. As usual, I reminded everyone that we are a house of prayer for all people. We love being a house of prayer for all people. But last Friday night gave me another way of reminding us that we are a house of prayer for all people. The Marching Abominable had begun their set with a very fun rendition of that very rock song that I used to enjoy, In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida. So, in my welcome remarks, I began with that song, too. Except, I used the words that the band had originally used for that song: “In the Garden of Eden.” Yes, that was the title, before some sort of inebriation apparently slurred the words into “In A Gadda Da Vida.” Yes, the original words to that song were, “In the Garden of Eden,” a religious allusion. (The Simpsons episode had it right!) The song, very generally, was about Adam taking Eve’s hand. And that’s about as far it goes. But it is religious! At the Cathedral of St. Philip, we accept that prayer takes different forms. We thrive in that reality. Inspired by the deep and broad Spirit of God, this church contains many different kinds of prayer, from low to high, from jazz to classical, from choir to marching abominable. But we all pray. Even those of us who don’t think we are praying, are praying! We are a house of prayer for all people! I thank God for the spirit of such grand occasions as “Cathedral Giving By Design.” It was a tremendous event, one of many that expands our life and our prayer. In fact, one of the design themes for Friday night was the garden! Thus, it was fitting that one of the night’s musical pieces was an allusion the garden of Eden, that place where we all began. This beautiful cathedral parish is indeed a garden, a tremendous garden of prayer. We are a garden big enough to contain prayer for all people; we are a house of prayer for all sorts of people.

OUTREACH ST. VERONICA’S GUILD TOILETRIES MINISTRY – BACK STORY St. Veronica’s Guild members have been in the Atrium on Epiphany Sundays to raise funds for toiletries they bring to four community ministries throughout the year. As you read the flyers they distribute, do you wonder about the back story of the toiletries ministry and how donations are used? Q. How does the guild give over 11,000 toiletries to four different ministries throughout the year? That is a lot of items to provide.

A. It is a big job requiring a lot of coordination. The guild orders twelve different types of toiletries in bulk. Working within a strict budget for donated funds, and using feedback from the ministries, the guild purchases toiletries that people served by the ministries find most useful. Ordered toiletries are delivered to the church, where St. Veronica’s members organize them and then deliver to each of the four ministries. Q. How often does the guild give the toiletries to the ministries?

A. This distribution process happens six times each year. Ministries value this dependable supply of toiletries.

Q. What is the significance of the camel logo?

A. Glad you asked. The Wise Men reportedly rode camels as they brought their gifts to the Christ child and carried God’s message of generous love to the world. The guild hopes the camel logo inspires gifts to neighbors in need. Q. Do you still want contributions once the Epiphany drive ends this Sunday?

A. Yes, emphatically! This is a year-round ministry and donations of any size now and throughout the year are welcome and easy: 1. Use your phone to scan the QR code on the ministry flyer. 2. Donate online at cathedralATL.org/toiletries 3. Write a check to the Cathedral of St. Philip, with “St. Veronica’s toiletries” on the memo line. St. Veronica’s Guild, the four ministries and the people they serve all thank you for your gifts.

ADULT Education ADULT EDUCATION THIS SUNDAY Old Fashioned Sunday School The Screwtape Letters: A Lenten Look at Life through the Eyes of C.S. Lewis 10:10 a.m., Child Hall Part of life is being tested. The Lenten season marks the time that Jesus was tested by the devil in the wilderness. C. S. Lewis offers a satirical, but playful and perceptive take on the idea of such testing in The Screwtape Letters. In the letters, the senior devil, Screwtape, advises his nephew and devil-in-training, about how to best sabotage a human being’s attempts to live a faithful, fruitful, beautiful life. Lewis makes us laugh and then makes us cry as we realize how often we get in our own way. We will start preparing for Easter a little early this year and then (with one interruption) proceed through Lent by talking about some of the themes running through the letters. Canon Maxwell will be working from a Lenten devotional titled C. S. Lewis And The Delightful, Diabolical Daring Of Lent: A Lenten Companion To “The Screwtape Letters.” A downloadable PDF will be provided through the Old Fashioned Sunday School newsletter. Living Faith 10:10 a.m., Room 239 Our topic until Lent is “What makes for a meaningful life?” Drawing on the book Life Worth Living: A Guide to What Matters by three scholars from the Yale Institute for Faith and Culture, we’ll reflect on some core questions of human existence within the context of our Christian calling and hope. All are welcome! Young Professionals: Exploring Our Faith and Our Spirituality 10:10 a.m., Room 368 For the next few Sundays, we will examine the Biblical understanding of our faith and spiritual life, led by the Rev. Salmoon Bashir. Our discussions will center around how one can begin to gain spiritual knowledge and nurture their relationship with God. We will also focus on spiritual growth by exploring various methods found in the Christian traditions. Enjoy Biblical Greek! 1:15 p.m., Room 239 and on Zoom Provided on a drop-in basis, first-time visitors need no previous knowledge of Greek. Please contact the Rev. Dr. Thee Smith, tsmith@cathedralATL.org, for more information.

This weekend we celebrated the 2nd Cathedral Giving By Design, which this year benefits the Boyce L. Ansley School, a tuition-free private school for children experiencing homelessness in Atlanta. Friday night kicked off the festivities with a “Welcome Home” party, featuring a surprise marching band and a spirited live auction. On Saturday, we gathered to hear an esteemed panel of experts discuss design trends, followed by a tour of four exceptional homes. We are incredibly grateful to the over one hundred volunteers from all parts of our Cathedral community, and to the Cathedral staff, for their hard work and dedication.

BRAVER ANGELS RED/BLUE WORKSHOP Saturday, February 3 9 a.m. – 4 p.m., Lanier House Cathedral parishioners, neighbors, and staff have been participating in Braver Angels workshops to explore how our Baptismal Covenant informs our civic and political engagement. Braver Angels is America’s largest organization that brings conservatives and progressives together on equal terms to understand our differences, find common ground where it exists, and help the country we all love find a better way. On Saturday, February 3 the Cathedral will host another Braver Angels event: the Red-Blue Workshop. Red-Blue workshops bring together a small, evenly divided group of conservatives and liberals, or “reds” and “blues,” for a series of exercises designed to help participants clarify disagreements, reduce stereotyped thinking, and discover common values. Two moderators, trained by Braver Angels, lead the workshop, ensuring that ground rules are followed and that everyone is treated respectfully. And, in gratitude for your commitment to our Baptismal Covenant and our country, the Cathedral will furnish lunch! To register, visit cathedralATL. org/faithfulpolitics. For more information or questions, please contact Jeannie Mahood, jmahood@cathedralATL.org, or 404-365-1031.

4th grader Mac Gantt captivates his Godly Play audience

GODLY PLAY SPOTLIGHT Mac is in the 4th grade and has been doing Godly Play since he was 2 years old. His mom, Susan, has been a Godly Play teacher for the past 10 years. Mac stepped in last week when one of our storytellers was running late and told the story of the Good Samaritan. Godly Play allows our children to have an immersion into the sacred stories in the Bible, and our Holy liturgies. The Godly Play philosophy permeates all that we do with children and families at the Cathedral. Within the Godly Play classroom, the Biblical narrative is lovingly presented to children using beautiful materials with an invitation to step into each story with awe and wonder. Children are then allowed time to respond to and reflect on their experience of the story. To learn more about our children’s ministry or to register for Godly Play visit cathedralATL.org/children.
