WHO IS IN THE DETAILS

By the Very Rev. Sam Candler, Dean of the Cathedral When details become complicated, or even troublesome, during discussions or negotiations, one often hears the comment, “Well, the devil is in the details.” Well, I disagree. Why should the devil have all that fun? (I am reminded of Larry Norman, the so-called father of Christian rock music. He wrote a song titled, “Why Should the Devil Have All the Good Music?”). It is not the devil who is in the details. It is God who is in the details! How in the world did people begin to get that backwards? God is in the details, because God enjoys our details. When people ask, “How are you?” I know they are just trying to be pleasant, trying to encourage good relationship. And I often ask the same question, “How are you?” But, lately, I am trying to start a new way of asking how people are. If I am truly interested in how people are doing, I try to ask this question: “What are your details these days?” or, “What details are you observing? I am interested in details, because that is where God works the finest. God works in particulars, tiny pieces of the whole, over and over. Healthy parts, tended over and over again, develop into healthy wholes! I have another reason to ask about what details people are paying attention to. I find that happy people, truly happy people, are interested in details! When a person has a job, or a subject, or even a hobby, which fascinates them so much that they become absorbed in details, they are happy! When a person is so fascinated by another person that they want to know all the details of that other person, why, that sounds a lot like love! Happy people like details! Yes, love is about tending to details. The details are where God is the most loving, and they are where God is the most fascinating. What details are you tending these days? I know they might be frustrating right now. But they are also where God is the most active. God loves the details of our lives, and the details of our fascinations. “Even the hairs of your head are all counted, said Jesus, “So do not be afraid” (Matthew 10:30–31). God is in the details!

FAITHFUL Politics BRAVER ANGELS RED/BLUE WORKSHOP Saturday, February 3 9 a.m. – 4 p.m., Lanier House Cathedral parishioners, neighbors, and staff have been participating in Braver Angels workshops to explore how our Baptismal Covenant informs our civic and political engagement. Braver Angels is America’s largest organization that brings conservatives and progressives together on equal terms to understand our differences, find common ground where it exists, and help the country we all love find a better way. On Saturday, February 3 the Cathedral will host another Braver Angels event: the Red-Blue Workshop. Red-Blue workshops bring together a small, evenly divided group of conservatives and liberals, or “reds” and “blues,” for a series of exercises designed to help participants clarify disagreements, reduce stereotyped thinking, and discover common values. Two moderators, trained by Braver Angels, lead the workshop, ensuring that ground rules are followed and that everyone is treated respectfully. And, in gratitude for your commitment to our Baptismal Covenant and our country, the Cathedral will furnish lunch! To register, visit cathedralATL.org/faithfulpolitics. For more information or questions, please contact Jeannie Mahood, jmahood@cathedralATL.org or 404-365-1031.

VOLUNTEER FOR THE POINT-IN-TIME COUNT Thursday, January 25 The Point-in-Time Count is an annual survey of people experiencing homelessness conducted each January in communities around the country. It is a key component in helping our neighbors receive the assistance they need to stay safe and sheltered. The Point-in-Time Count depends on volunteers for its completion. This year, the Rev. Canon Julia Mitchener will take part in a daytime count on the morning of Thursday, January 25 with our partner agency Emmaus House. There are spots available for several parishioners to join in. If you’d like to learn more or volunteer, please contact the Rev. Canon Julia Mitchener, julia.mitchener@cathedralATL.org as soon as possible.

ST. VERONICA’S GUILD EPIPHANY DRIVE CONTINUES St. Veronica’s Guild is grateful for your Epiphany Drive donations. They help continue the Guild’s yearly gifts of over 11,000 soaps, toothbrushes, shampoo, razors, deodorant, and other items for Crossroads Community Ministries, Holy Comforter Episcopal Church, Church of the Common Ground, and Emmaus House. St Veronica’s members hear many questions as they circulate around the Atrium on January Sundays, telling people about their ministry: Q. Are you purchasing the toiletries you give? A. Yes. During the pandemic bulk purchasing was the only way to continue providing the much-needed personal care items. Serendipitously we realized that purchasing allowed the Guild to consistently give the items that meet ministries’ needs and have continued this method. Q. If I collect soap, shampoo, etc. during travels, can I still give them? A. Yes, new, unopened items can be left at the Security Office and will be distributed to the ministries. We appreciate any support of our ministry. Q. Who receives the toiletries? A. Thousands of our Atlanta neighbors, who can maintain their dignity as they struggle with poverty, health, and housing challenges. You may give by visiting cathedralATL.org/toiletries. Thank you for your caring generosity.
