CATHEDRAL GIVING BY DESIGN: COME MEET OUR BENEFICIARY!
This Sunday, 10:10 a.m., Child Hall
Cathedral Giving By Design is thrilled to welcome our 2024 beneficiary, The Boyce L. Ansley School, to the Cathedral for a presentation this Sunday, September 10, at 10:10 a.m. in Child Hall.
The Boyce L. Ansley School educates children experiencing homelessness in Atlanta and provides vital support services for families to break generational cycles of poverty and housing insecurity. The school’s mission is to provide rigorous, high-quality education and collaborative family support, while taking into consideration the unique traumas associated with experiencing homelessness, in order to empower children and families to thrive beyond their circumstance.
There are almost 2,000 children experiencing homelessness in Atlanta schools, and countless more who are not even enrolled. Trauma, disrupted education, and challenging circumstances leave them struggling academically. The scholars and their family unit thrive within the school’s framework of structure and support, all of which are provided tuition-free. For the 20232024 school year, the Ansley School will serve over 60 students and 40 families, in Kindergarten through the 4th grade. All of these families are members of our Atlanta community and fall below the poverty line.
The Ansley School is a child-centered school, meaning that for a child to succeed in the classroom, their needs must be met beyond the classroom. Every student is valued and every student receives breakfast, lunch, snacks, uniforms, and school supplies, as well as access to school transportation and an after-school program. The school also provides in-house social workers and therapists, who work in conjunction with teachers to ensure that each child is mentally and emotionally prepared to learn at the beginning of each school day. In the classroom, the Ansley School focuses on STEAM-based education: Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Math. An intentional 7:1 student-to-teacher ratio allows teachers to give robust and purposeful attention to each student. Teachers are further supported by two learning specialists, who assist with individualized strategies to support each student’s learning. Measures of academic progress are used several times per year to ensure that students are meeting and surpassing national standards.
At the Ansley School, every family commits to an individualized Family Support Program. Together with community partners, the school offers job placement and training, permanent housing search support, trauma therapy, transportation assistance, emergency rental assistance, emergency shelter assistance, emergency utility assistance, and additional tailored need-based services. The Ansley School recognizes that for a child to thrive, the family unit must also be able to do so.
The Ansley School is delighted to partner with Cathedral Giving By Design to add a fifth for the 2024-2025 school year. With the fifth grade, the Ansley School will be able to educate and improve the lives of children for the entirety of their elementary school education. In this partnership, the Cathedral community will build on a legacy of supporting homeless persons in our community. Together, we will work to provide a complete, robust, and rigorous elementary school education for our city’s most vulnerable children.
Cathedral Giving By Design is a two day event celebrating the joy of design and hospitality on January 19–20, 2024. Continuing a long tradition of philanthropic giving to the Atlanta community, the weekend will be a design and entertainment showcase with a suite of events including a festive welcome party, live auction, designer speaker panel and tour of homes that is sure to inspire. We invite you to join us!

Being With: The Road to Reconciliation
Resumes Sunday, September 17, Child Hall, 10:10 a.m.
In May of this year, Dr. Vivek Murthy, the United States Surgeon General, issued an Advisory calling attention to the public health crisis of loneliness, isolation, and lack of connection in our country. The Rev. Samuel Wells, Vicar of St. Martinsin-the-Fields in central London, has argued that the first step we might take in dealing with this predicament is to change the way we think about God from one who works for us to one who wants to be with us. Canon George Maxwell will lead a discussion that looks more deeply at Murthy’s diagnosis and the healing remedy that Wells prescribes.
Murthy discusses his warnings about isolation, loneliness, and lack of connection in his book Together: The Healing Power of Human Connection in a Sometimes Lonely World (NY: Harper Wave, 2020).Wells introduces many of his ideas about being with in his book Humbler Faith, Bigger God: Finding a Story to Live By (Eerdmans: Grand Rapids, MI, 2022). Copies of both books may be purchased in the Cathedral Bookstore.

BRAVER ANGELS FAITH-SPONSORED WORKSHOP: DEPOLARIZING WITHIN
Saturday, October 7
1 p.m. – 4 p.m.
Gould Room
For people of faith, civil discourse begins in recognizing the image of God in our conversation partner. Since we are all children of God, our approach should involve mutual respect. Respect, not agreement, is an essential key for a healthy discussion. This workshop addresses how we may inadvertently be complicit in, or possibly even encourage, political polarization.
The Depolarizing Within workshop is designed to foster skills to help you lessen the effects of polarization when you encounter them in your political conversations. Note that by “polarization,” we are not referring to healthy disagreements over issues or philosophy. We are talking about how we regard and talk about large groups of ordinary people on the other side of the political aisle. This workshop is for anyone interested in examining their own inner polarization and learning strategies to disagree without condemning or ridiculing others.
Goals of the workshop are to teach participants:
• How to be more aware of their own “inner polarizer”
• How to be critical without demonizing, dismissing or stereotyping large swaths of the population
• Strategies for intervening constructively in social conversations with like-minded peers when these conversations veer into contempt and ridicule for people who hold other political views.
Braver Angels is America’s largest organization that brings conservatives and progressives together on equal terms to understand our differences, find common ground where it exists, and help the country we all love find a better way. For questions or more information, contact the Rev. George Maxwell, gmaxwell@cathedralATL.org, or Jeannie Mahood, jmahood@cathedralATL.org, 404-365-1031.

Authentic Life

The culminating question in the Baptismal Covenant asks, “Will you strive for peace and justice and respect the dignity of every human being?” As core to the authentic Christian life, this question challenges us to look again and see the dignity in our neighbors and in our own lives. Dr. Wright will use the DIGNITY Lens, a sevenpronged transformative set of strategies inspired by this question to advocate for and address any barriers to authenticity in our communities and in our lives.
