The CATHEDRAL TIMES

REMEMBERING DR. MARTIN LUTHER KING, JR., AT THE ROTHKO CHAPEL

On the Thursday before Martin Luther King, Jr., Day, I made a very quick visit to Houston. My trip was part of a surprise party for my daughter’s birthday, one of the big ones. It was lovely, as always, to be with other family members and to love each other.

On Friday, however, I had a couple of free hours before my return to Atlanta. With two of my children and my wife, I made a pilgrimage. We made a pilgrimage to the Rothko Chapel there in Houston. It is a masterpiece, a masterpiece of design and holiness and prayer. The interior space is rather spare, eight-sided, about fifty feet by fifty feet, with no fixed chairs or pews. Instead, wooden benches provide places of meditation and observation.

On the walls are fourteen pieces of art by Mark Rothko. Some of you may know that his art often consists of large, solid, blocks of color – squares or rectangles that simply engage the viewer with nuances of color and shape. I am engaged by them, whether they are in museums or chapels! The fourteen pieces in Houston’s Rothko Chapel are dark and somber in the dim light. But more light can bring out a deeper and lovely purple hue in them. The place is deliberately quiet, and the place is deliberately holy. Some people call the Rothko Chapel “an act of faith.” Rothko himself said that, “all good painting is a spiritual experience.”

Outside the chapel, on the grounds, is another holy piece of art. It is titled, “Broken Obelisk,” by Barnett Newman. Most of us realize what a complete obelisk is, and those monuments can be found almost everywhere in western civilization: from Cairo, Egypt, to Washington, DC. But Newman’s “Broken Obelisk” takes a broken upper top piece of an obelisk, and sets it upside down upon a shorter, pyramid structure – another top of an obelisk, if you will; the two pieces meet tip to tip. The guiding forces, behind both the Rothko Chapel and the “Broken Obelisk,” were John and Dominique de Menil, who encountered much political resistance in Houston in the late 1960s about where to install the sculpture. After the assassination of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., the de Menils, at one point, had a plan to install the broken obelisk in front of Houston City Hall, with the inscription, “Father, forgive them; for they know not what they do.” That plan did not come about, and the sculptor had never intended the piece to have an inscription anyway. Finally, resolution came with the piece “Broken Obelisk” being installed on the grounds of the Rothko Chapel, with the condition that it be dedicated to Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. The arrangement is both beautiful and somber. For me, it was a way of keeping the feast of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Take time to go love some people. Remember the brokenness, remember the somberness, remember the sadness. But find some beauty to rejoice in. Find some people to rejoice with. Let some light bring color to the world.

OUTREACH

ST. VERONICA’S GUILD EPIPHANY

DRIVE FAQ's

What is happening at the St. Veronica's Atrium table between services in January? St. Veronica’s Guild is holding their fundraising Epiphany Drive to help underwrite costs for many thousands of personal care items such as soap, toothpaste, shampoo and more that the Guild purchases for four hardworking Atlanta ministries throughout each year. Guild members at the Atrium table can tell you about the ministries and how you may make a donation.

Who benefits?

Hundreds of adults and children served each year by Emmaus House, Holy Comforter Episcopal Church, Church of the Common Ground, and Crossroads Community Ministries receive the personal care items.

How can I donate:

• At the Guild’s table – checks, cash, or use the Atrium kiosk for online donations

• At the Atrium kiosk any day of the week

• Visit cathedralATL.org/epiphany

What do the donations mean to the ministries?

Any monetary donation, small or sizeable, is valued and carefully used. Holy Comforter Episcopal Church, one beneficiary, serves persons who are marginalized by mental health challenges and poverty. As the Reverend Ashley Carr, Vicar, stated, “We are deeply grateful for your efforts, and I want you to know that our members greatly value the items you send to us. Many of our people wouldn’t have hygiene items if it weren’t for those you provide, because they can’t afford them.”

PRAYER and the CONTEMPLATIVE IMAGINATION

A Mini-Retreat by Carl McColman Saturday, January 28

“Be still and know that I am God” is a promise from the Psalms: a promise that God may be known through stillness, silence, and contemplation. But how do we truly know God — and how does stillness truly invite us into this deeper way of knowing?

Explore these questions in this featured presentation given by Carl McColman, speaker and teacher on mystical spirituality and contemplative living. This event is in-person only, and will be held on Saturday, January 28 from 9–12, in Child Hall. Tickets are $45 (or $35 for students.)

Our facilitator, Carl McColman, is the author of many books, including Eternal Heart and The Big Book of Christian Mysticism (available in the Cathedral Book Store). Based in Atlanta, he is a commissioned presenter of Centering Prayer Introductory Workshops and a popular blogger, podcaster and retreat leader.

Visit cathedralbookstore.org/carl to learn more and register.

Thursday February 9, 11 a.m.–1 p.m. or Saturday, February 11, 10 a.m.–12 p.m.

Kristen E. Vincent is author of the award-winning book, A Bead and a Prayer: A Beginner’s Guide to Protestant Prayer Beads. Join her as she shares the history, symbolism, and benefits of beads in prayer, then guides you through the process of making and using your own set of Anglican prayer beads.

Kristen has a Master of Theological Studies from Duke Divinity School and is a graduate of the two-year Academy for Spiritual Formation. She is also a spiritual director with certification as a Narrative Enneagram Practitioner.

During the workshop, each participant will follow along to make a full set of Anglican prayer beads. All necessary materials will be provided on the day of the event and are included in the $18 ticket cost.

STEWARDSHIP

NEW ONLINE GIVING PLATFORM

The Cathedral is moving to a new platform to process online and credit card contributions beginning in January. Because the new platform is a part of the Cathedral’s TouchPoint database, parishioners will be able to make a contribution, set up a pledge, view contribution history, and print statements in one place. Cathedral stewardship staff will work with parishioners to help move information to the new system over the coming weeks. As part of this process, the Cathedral app will take the place of the atrium kiosk for onsite donations and purchases. You can visit cathedralATL.org/touchpoint to log in to your TouchPoint account and download the Cathedral app by visiting your phone's app store and searching “Cathedral of St. Philip.” As always, contact David Rocchio at 404-365-1033 or drocchio@cathedralATL.org for more information.
