REJOICE SUNDAY! Those of you who heard my sermon last week, the Second Sunday of Advent, heard me say that I do not adhere to the tradition of Advent as a season of judgment. I realize, of course, that we all need judgment in our lives. Furthermore, judgment can—and should!—be understood as a positive and truthful event. Good judgment is a sign of positive truth! However, to my mind, the advent of our Lord is better received with something like thanksgiving (as I said last Sunday) or even with something like joy! On this coming Sunday, the Third Sunday of Advent (and two Sundays before Christmas), the theme is much better. It happily happens that the epistle lesson assigned for this Sunday is a portion of Philippians, chapter 4. We have been reading Philippians in this Advent season, and last week I stressed Paul’s attitude of thanksgiving in chapter 1. However, it is the theme of “joy” and “rejoicing” that rings even more strongly through Paul’s letter to the Philippians. In four short chapters of that book, Saint Paul mentions “joy” or “rejoicing” some twenty times. Ancient tradition uses Philippians 4:4-7 as the introit (sung opening passage) for this Third Sunday of Advent, a passage that begins, “Rejoice in the Lord always, and again I say, Rejoice!” In Latin, the word for “rejoice” is “Gaudete.” Thus, tradition has accorded this Third Sunday of Advent the name, “Gaudete Sunday.” It is meant to be a Sunday that stresses rejoicing (especially for those people who insist on the fearful judgmental nature of Advent!) This tradition is responsible for the rose-colored candle among the four candles on our Advent wreaths: the rose-colored candle, or pink candle, is for the rejoicing on the Third Sunday of Advent. We need a joy break! In the Episcopal Church, we rarely sing introits at the Sunday morning Eucharist, but we have honored this ancient tradition in another way. In this Year C, we use Philippians 4:4-7 as our epistle lesson for the day. Alleluia! We get to rejoice during Advent!

“I baptize you with water; but one who is more powerful than I is coming; I am not worthy to untie the thong of his sandals. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit.” From this week’s lectionary Luke 3:16

I trust that each of you is enjoying this season. It can be hectic. It can be overdone. It can be sad. It can be anxious. It can be too much. But, ultimately, God wants us to enjoy it. We are preparing for the arrival of our God: Emmanuel, God-with-us. God may arrive dramatically, or God may arrive quietly. But God will arrive. That is reason to rejoice. You can rejoice either wildly or softly. Either way. “Rejoice in the Lord always, and again I say, Rejoice!”

“Who Was John the Baptist?” is the title of Dean Sam Candler’s presentation at the Dean’s Forum this Sunday. Dean Candler will discuss a particular theory of the identity of John the Baptist, that he was an early competitor with Jesus. Another title of this talk might be “Competition and Collegiality.” Join Sam Candler in the parish hall this Sunday at 10:10 a.m.!

Children’s Chapel takes place during the 8:45 a.m. service as an option for parents and children who are not yet ready to experience the full liturgy together, though children are always welcome in “big” church. Children three years through third grade begin in church with their parents, follow the children’s acolytes and leaders out at the Sequence Hymn, then rejoin their parents at the Offertory. Two-year-olds attend their own chapel service, which begins at 8:45 a.m. Parents who would like their children two years old and younger to join them for communion may go pick them up from Room 227 at the Peace.

WOR SHIP The Cathedral Schola will lead the annual Festival of Nine Christmas Lessons and Carols by Candlelight on Sunday, December 20 at 4 p.m. This service consists of various scriptural readings of the season punctuated by anthems and congregational carols. Our festival is modeled on the famous worship service at King’s College, Cambridge, which has become popular worldwide since World War II through annual radio broadcasts on Christmas Eve. Whether you best sense the Eternal through beautiful choral music or popular carols sung by all, this service holds something for everyone.

STEWAR DSHIP

I VOLUNTEER with LaAmistad at the Cathedral, tutoring Hispanic 2nd

graders from our neighborhood in reading, writing, and arithmetic. It is honestly the most worthwhile two hours of my week! Participating in the growth of these beautiful children over the school year is truly inspirational, and I thank St. Philip’s for opening this door for me. We are making a difference in the lives of these children and their families every week through the Cathedral’s commitment to LaAmistad.

I PLEDGE to be a par t of the

wider community that is the Cathedr al of St. Philip. My small contr ibution becomes something more meaningful as par t of the greater fabr ic of the church. As I par ticipate in the Cathedr al’s wor ship ser vices, classes, small groups and outreach, I become something lar ger than myself.

MEET A MEMBER

Al Plummer has been a member of the Cathedral since 1979. Christie Jennison, program coordinator for membership and stewardship, recently sat down with Al to talk about his experiences at the Cathedral.

“I grew up in Bayard, Nebraska, a small town in the far western panhandle of the state that sits along the Oregon Trail and is located 60 miles from Wyoming, 90 miles from South Dakota, and 60 miles from Colorado. It was a cool place to grow up. We had a very small Episcopal Church in town – I was an acolyte and played the organ occasionally. I took piano lessons until I was a sophomore in high school, so I played the organ when they needed it. I went back to the church recently when I was in town for a reunion, and I don’t remember it being as small as it was! It’s really

unbelievably small. I suspect we probably had 25 to 30 people at the church. So, that was my first exposure to the Episcopal Church, and I’ve loved it since then. I always liked the services, the ceremony and liturgy of them.” Al attended the University of Nebraska, where he met his wife, Ginny, while working at a local country club as a lifeguard. He and Ginny then moved to Chicago so that Al could attend Northwestern University Med School, from there went to Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota, and finally settled in Atlanta to work at Emory as an internal medicine and pulmonary specialist. How did you get to the Cathedral? “We joined the Cathedral in 1979 after moving into Fulton County from DeKalb County. We fell in love with the Cathedral right away – it’s a beautiful church. It had what we needed for our four kids, all of whom went through Sunday School here.” Activities at the Cathedral: “I’ve been an usher for as long as I can remember, and I also serve as a lector and intercessor. I was on the board for the Cathedral Towers for six years, which was very interesting and enjoyable.”

Activities outside the Cathedral: Al is an avid traveler. “My wife and I recently returned from a 25 day trip to Australia and New Zealand. It was such a fantastic trip – it seems like we had one big fantastic thing happen every day. We drove along the coast of New Zealand and then saw the beautiful mountains and lakes from overhead in a little, single engine airplane; spent four or so days in the Outback; saw the Southern Cross at sunrise, a bright constellation located in the southern hemisphere, and three planets at once – Jupiter, Mars, and Venus. It was kind of a sensory overload because we saw so many beautiful things while we were there. I also like to sail – we try to get all our kids and grandkids up to a cabin in Minnesota during the summer for a few weeks.” Favorite thing about the Cathedral: “I love the services and the clergy, and the diversity of all the staff members is great. We like going to Old Fashioned Sunday School, and I really love Sam’s sermons. The outreach programs are very strong right now. Ginny and I love going to the Antiques Show, that’s one of our favorite things to do. I really like the direction that the Cathedral is moving in these days.”
