Advent Lessons & Carols

Sunday, November 29, 4 p.m.

Those who have attended this candlelight service in past years know what a perfect opportunity it is to step back from the hectic pace of the post-Thanksgiving, pre-Christmas season, and take a few moments to contemplate Advent’s real meaning. Our two services of Lessons and Carols (for Advent on November 29, and for Christmas on December 20) are adapted from the famous carol service at King’s College, Cambridge, which has become popular worldwide since World War II through annual radio broadcasts on Christmas Eve. For our Advent service we include the ancient O Antiphons, one after each of the seven lessons. Whether you best sense the eternal through timeless chant, or wonderful choral music, or popular carols sung by all, there is something for everyone in this service. This year, choral music, sung from various points in the Nave of the Cathedral, will include: Richard Marlow, Matin Responsory Colin Mawby, Adam lay ybounden Robert Lehman, Rorate caeli Howard Helvey, There is no rose of such virtue Claude Goudimel, Comfort, comfort ye my people Patrick Hadley, I sing of a maiden arr. Craig Phillips, Gabriel’s Message Herbert Howells, “Magnificat,” from Gloucester Service James MacMillan, O Radiant Dawn Why not practice a “random act of kindness” and make the service a gift to someone this year by inviting them to attend? It may turn out to be one of the best gifts you give.

La Fiesta de Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe The Feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe FRIDAY, DECEMBER 11 We will gather at 9 p.m. in Child Hall for dinner and mariachi music! Please bring one of your favorite dishes to share. Then, at 11 p.m., we will move to the Cathedral for worship and singing of the traditional mañanitas to the Virgin Mary.

Food! Mariachi! Worship! ¡Todos son bienvenidos! All are welcome! FOR MORE INFORMATION, CONTACT DEACON JUAN SANDOVAL, JSANDOVAL@STPHILIPSCATHEDRAL.ORG.

STEWAR DSHIP

I NURTURE because God has given me a heart for children. Working at the

Nurturing Center varies each Sunday, from vesting an eager seven-year old for acolyting to holding a three-year-old on my lap while singing “This Little Light of Mine” in Children’s Chapel. Children are truly one of the best gifts from God.

I PLEDGE to support this amazing

community. There are so many facets at the Cathedral. I’m always amazed to see how varied our groups are at any given time of the day or week. The main thing is that we support everyone, we are a community.

During this Advent Quiet Day, we will pray with these stories as a way to prepare ourselves to receive God’s “angels” in our lives and the tidings they bring. There will be time for group and individual meditation, creative expression, and communion. But most important, there will be time for you to be still and listen to God. Please join us on Saturday, December 5, 9:30 a.m. – 2 p.m. in the Lanier House. The cost is $20, which includes lunch. Contact Jeannie Mahood, jmahood@ stphilipscathedral.org or 404-365-1034, by November 30 to register.
