Bonjour and Welcome to Child Hall Theater!
We are overjoyed that you have come to experience our third Cathedral Thrift House Follies, Follies TroisFollies Trois – Ooh-La-La! Thank you so much for being here.
All net proceeds of tonight’s performance benefit a wonderful prison ministry, Motherhood Beyond Bars. We are grateful that the Executive Director of Motherhood Beyond Bars, Amy Ard, is with us tonight. Please direct your attention to Amy’s presentation about the amazing work they are doing to help end the cycle of incarceration in Georgia. Please also consider making a donation to Motherhood Beyond Bars by credit card by scanning the QR code on the back of your program or by writing a check and giving it to one of our volunteers.
Tonight’s honorary co-chairs are Karen and Rod Bunn. If you don’t know Karen and Rod, you are missing out! Their grace and generosity penetrates the halls of the Cathedral of St. Philip. Karen shares her extraordinary musical talents by playing the organ at our Hispanic services. She is a weekly fixture and vital pillar of our growing Hispanic community at the Cathedral. Rod can be seen quietly serving as chief usher from early morning until the end of the day nearly every Sunday and holiday, and also serves on the Friends of Cathedral Music board. Karen and Rod embody the spirit of giving and hospitality that we treasure at the Cathedral Thrift House.
The Follies would not be possible without you, our honorary co-chairs, and the fabulous work and dedication of our extraordinary Thrift House manager, Nellie Holleman; Thrift House Board chair, Tom Carpenter; the Thrift House board; Julia Mitchener, our clergy representative on the board; the amazing Thrift House staff and volunteers; the incomparable clergy and staff of the Cathedral of St. Philip; and, of course, H & F Bottle Shop in the Peachtree Battle Shopping Center, who have donated the wine for all three of our Follies performances.
Cheers to all of them and to all of you! Please sit back and enjoy the show!

Karen and Rod Bunn, Honorary Co-Chairs
Karen and Rod met on a blind date at an organ dedication recital at the University of Tennessee, Music Department. At the time, Karen was studying piano pedagogy and later organ. Rod was studying engineering.
Later, after they married, they frequently attended the Metropolitan Opera performances in Atlanta on Saturday evenings and then Sunday worship services at the Cathedral of St. Philip. Rod said that being married to a church organist means one always knows where the best church pipe organs and musicians are located!
In 2000, in pursuit of new opportunities, Karen and Rod moved to Atlanta. Rod had retired from the University of Tennessee, College of Arts and Sciences, Division of Biology, where he had been one of the division directors, an engineer, and a scientist while also working at Oak Ridge National Labs for well over 30 years. In 2002, Karen and Rod were confirmed at the Cathedral of St. Philip and became members. Not long after their first visit, a kindly gentleman wearing a red carnation and name tag asked them to carry the Oblations at the Presentation portion of the service. As most of you know, that man was Dr. Emile Fisher, a long-time usher and Chief Usher. As you can imagine, they both became ushers. This began their lives at St. Philip.
Throughout the years, Karen and Rod have been active in a number of St. Philip volunteer opportunities. Karen participated with the youth group as a chaperone for an overnight stay at the Cathedral. She and Rod went bowling with them. That was the first time Rod knew that Karen could bowl. Thank goodness that Karen had bowling lessons with the Girl Scouts. Rod had no training and just watched. At the annual Christmas Eve Children’s Pageant, you will notice quite a few lambs rambling up the aisle. Karen answered the call to make five of those lamb costumes, which are still being used today. Around 2004, two members of the Hispanic congregation offered to teach a Level I and Level II Spanish class, and Karen signed up. One of her assignments was to read a scripture in Spanish for the Hispanic service held in the Mikell Chapel. It was there that she realized that the service didn’t have anyone to play the organ. She offered her services as an organist to Father Rodrigues, and he accepted. Karen has been playing for the Hispanic congregation since that time. She says this has been a wonderful way to experience a culture of gracious manners, good food, music, and quinceañeras. She and Rod have made many great friends as a result. Karen and Rod both have served on the Friends of Cathedral Music board. Rod serves on the Cathedral Chapter, as one of the Chairs of the Stewardship Committee, a member of the Cathedral Curate Advisory Committee, a participant in the Community of Hope seminar series for several years, The Cathedral Worship Committee, Fisher House Renovation Project and the Usher Ministry.
With all this said, Karen and Rod have said that St. Philip is a wonderful church home, and they are honored to be Co-Chairs of the 2024 Thrift House Follies.
