Tomorrow we have our Open Morning, a chance for children and their parents to come and visit our school.

Walking around the school throughout the week has been so lovely, watching the children thoroughly enjoying their learning. I am sure everyone who visits the school will be impressed. We are delighted to share with you our school video that encapsulates our happy, thriving school.

The Friends of St Peter’s 2-8 have been meeting recently to organise and finalise details for several events that are happening this term. I know there is huge excitement regarding the ‘St Peter’s Bake Off’ amongst the children. On Monday 18th October the children are invited to bake cakes, muffins, biscuits and tray bakes based on a theme. Further details can be found later in the newsletter. On Friday 19th November there is a social event for parents. The Friends are organising ‘Piggy Racing’ which I am told is so much fun. Another date to save is Friday 26th November when we have a florist who will host a wreath making evening.

Further details regarding these two events will be sent out to all next week.

MONDAY

On Thursday it was National Poetry Day which is the annual mass celebration encouraging us all to enjoy, discover and share poetry. It showcases the many ways poetry adds value to society. The day is fun, it starts conversations in the classrooms and encourages a love of language and allows everyone to join in rewarding and enjoyable ways.

The theme for National Poetry Day this year was choice and we focused on how our choices affect the environment. We explored the poem 'The Story of Squiddly Diddly' and thought carefully about the importance of marine conservation. The children enjoyed performing the poem to their class, and we are really looking forward to using the clips to create a whole school performance of the poem to share with you soon! The poem also inspired us to upcycle our plastic bottles from home into artwork. The children have also been writing lots of poems related to their themes, I have read Haikus, Kenning and acrostic poetry written by the children and loved watching them perform on film! BOAT CLUB QUIZ NIGHT

Dear Parents and Friends of the Boat Club, We would like to invite you to this year's St Peter's School Boat Club Quiz Night to be held on Friday 15th October at 7pm in St Peter's Dining Hall.

The quiz is run by the students who are members of the Boat Club. It is a fantastic opportunity to support the Boat Club and get to know other parents, staff and members of the Boat Club. Teams can be organised ahead of time or you can just turn up and be welcomed into an existing team on the night.

We are particularly aware that we have had few opportunities to socialise and get to know the families of members of the Boat Club in the Fourth and Third Forms, so this presents a wonderful opportunity to welcome everyone to some of the life of the club ahead of what is an exciting weekend with the formal opening to the new Boat House on Saturday.

Tickets are £12.50 for adults and £7 for children and pupils of the school and include a meal. If you are planning to attend please contact me at henry.gowland@gmail.com stating Boat Club Quiz Night in the subject line and if you have any dietary requirements please could you let me know?

Finally, we are always looking for parents who can join the Supporters of St Peter's Boat Club, especially as Year Representatives and for anyone who would be able to support the planning of next year's Boat Club Dinner. OPPORTUNITIES TO SUPPORT THE COMBINED CADET FORCE (ARMY) We are hoping to expand our CCF staff team and would love to hear from anyone who might be keen to get involved. Previous experience in the Regular/Reserve Army or the Army Cadets would be a bonus, but we are open to hearing from anyone with an enthusiasm for helping young people develop useful life skills such as teamwork, leadership, self-discipline and problem solving.

MUSICAL NOTES Thank you for all the responses to the Year 2 and 3 Young Voices Trip next February. We are very much looking forward to singing at the Sheffield Arena and have everything crossed that we get there next year! If you have not done so already, please complete the order and consent form ASAP. ***

In the meantime, we are working on our own smaller concert on Thursday 21st October at 2pm in the Rayson Room. We will be live streaming the concert but really hope to have a real life audience with us too! The choir will be performing alongside some of our more experienced solo musicians. If your son or daughter would like to play their instrument and has been learning for a least a year, please can you email their name to a.hayden@stpetersyork.org.uk so I can add them to the list?

A quick reminder that choir is not on next Wednesday (13th October) so our final practice before our first concert will be on Wednesday 20th October. Many thanks, Mrs Hayden.

PLEASE NAME ALL ITEMS OF UNIFORM CLEARLY IN A PLACE WHERE THE CHILDREN CAN EASILY FIND AND READ IT. STAFF AND YOU AS PARETNS SPEND A HUGE AMOUNT OF TIME SEARCHING FOR LOST PROPERTY, WHICH CAN BE MUCH ALLEVIATED IF CHILDREN CAN FIND THEIR OWN KIT AND KEEP IT ON THEIR PEGS.

Year 1 have amazed me this term with their fabulous hockey skills in games. Despite just starting the sport this academic year, the children have been working incredibly hard on their hand positions on the stick and controlling their ball whilst dribbling around various objects. This week the Year 1 were able to perform a push pass to their partner using the correct technique. We then

progressed onto push passing the ball through a coned goal.

After 10 successful passes to their partner, they moved the coned goal narrower in order to challenge themselves.

Within Core PE the children have further developed their balancing skills. The children were challenged to balance their beanbag between their feet and using their tummy

muscles to twist around with their feet in the air. They then had to drop the beanbag for the next person in the line, to copy the same movement down the line.

ACORNS

Too hot, too cold, just right! We have had a week with the Acorns that has been just right! We have been exploring, and painting and building, sorting conkers and generally having a wonderful

time. Not only that, but we have made porridge that Goldilocks would have eaten ALL UP! Friday was World Smile Day and we really enjoyed dressing up and smiling for the camera.

Another super busy week in Conkers!

Partying, cutting, cooking, eating, jumping, exploring; these are just a few of the wonderful things we have been up to!

Phew, what a busy week we have had in Reception! As part of our Harvest Festival celebrations, we read the Julia Donaldson book ' The Scarecrows' Wedding' and have been creating scarecrows and positioning them around our outdoor area. The children have worked collaboratively on these, sharing their ideas, and working as a team to create their scarecrows, first discussing their ideas as a group then designing and making them together - thank you to Mrs Franey's farmer friend for our straw and to all our parents for the clothes donations. There is even a Mr Hardy's name's sake scarecrow- did you spot him? We hope you have enjoyed viewing them all! We have also been reading lots of Harvest related stories and have learnt to sign the story of The Little Red Hen in British Sign Language together.

down at the Museum Gardens where they could be spotted popping up behind the ruins of the Abbey. They practised their climbing and photography skills using the iPads searching for things that were 'three and not three' then had a snack together before setting off back to school. We were so lucky to enjoy glorious sunshine and the gardens looked beautiful with their colourful Autumn leaves.

We have started to introduce the baking area too this week to the children and everyone will get a turn over the next couple of weeks to have a go with an adult, then the children can access the area independently -so look out for some delicious treats coming your In between all this RJ managed to pop out for their Pop-Up classroom way!

This week in Year 1, the children have been using incredible adjectives to describe their teachers whilst playing guess who!

I wonder if you can guess the teacher by some of the children’s adjectives: · “His glasses are as shiny as snake skin” · “Her hair is long and brown” · “He is funny and says oh la la!”

Can you play this game at home with your family members? What adjectives can you use to describe them! It might be quite funny!

As well as using adjectives to describe our teachers, the children have been describing many different settings whilst using chatterpix! We learnt how to screen shot images from Google and then had lots of fun describing them as if we were there!

Ready, Steady… Stitch!

This week in Year 1, the children have been putting their stitching skills to the test! They have designed, cut, attached and stitched the most creative little hand puppets! The skills of perseverance, patience, determination and will power were all demonstrated in this mission!

Once the puppets had been stitched together, the children then used their fashion skills to dress them as pirates, ghosts and other characters! The different hair styles and items of clothing were beautiful!

As well as all of this, the children have had great fun making dinosaur bones and using QR codes to discover more facts about pirates and dinosaurs. We have also been busy scanning QR codes to learn how to draw dinosaur skeletons and autumnal leaves and acorns!

We brought our Roman adventures to a close with a fantastic feast on Friday; the children and staff dressed up in togas and laurel crowns for a Roman dining experience (luckily there were no flamingo tongues or pigs' brains being served!). Mrs Hayden got the children up on their feet as they taught the teachers one of the songs they have been learning, 'Walk like a Roman', and showed off their moves. The children had clearly sold the extravagant event to the other teachers through their invitations as we were inundated with guests.

We then began wondering how such a heavy object can float which led us on to experimenting with objects that float and sink and what causes this. We used natural resources from Forest School and made our own boats to put our theories to the test.

With National Poetry Day taking place this week, Year 2 took inspiration from the Vikings and our new key text to create their own Kennings poems. This is a style of poem where each line contains only two words, usually a noun and a verb. We have also been using adjectives to describe the main character from 'There's a Viking in my Bed'.

We were shocked to return from playtime on Monday to another note What an exciting new direction our from our cheeky crow, Croakbag, this learning has taken! Well done Year 2, time about a group of people called the another fantastic week!

YEAR 2

Year Three have had a wonderful week of celebrating poetry and being creative! As you are aware, it was National Poetry Day yesterday, but we decided to dedicate all week to exploring and delving into the depths of poetry! We started by looking at acrostic poems and wrote our own versions, based on Narnia.

We then moved on to shape poems. We used characters from our story as our subjects then planned our writing by creating lists of adjectives, verbs, adverbs and similes. We then put all of our ideas together to create the poems, which looked fantastic! For poetry day we looked at Haikus and used Global Warming as our topic. We have been learning about the effects of Global Warming and how we can help to slow down the speed in which it is affecting our world. This then got us talking about recycling and using Nina Kobylinska as inspiration, we papier maché-ed our own birds made of recycled materials! The children all agreed that it was a very messy activity, but brilliant fun!

In Maths we have been enjoying challenging ourselves with column addition and creating depth of knowledge by unpicking word problems and applying our new method of working to reach an answer. Phew! What a busy week!

YEAR 3

The Great St Peter’s Bake Off - Monday 18th October Bake Off is back! And not just on Channel 4!

FoSP are so pleased to be able to run our very wonderful Bake Off event again this year. The children are invited to bake cakes, muffins, biscuits, traybakes etc based on a theme. They then bring them in on the morning of Monday 18th October to our Bake Off Tent where all bakes will be tasted, judged and prizes awarded (in year groups). 2019 was, obviously, the last time we were able to run this event, and it was truly amazing with so many of our children taking part across all of the year groups, from Acorns to Year 3. Lets make this year even bigger! As we did last time, we have decided that Bake Off themes will predominantly follow the year groups’ learning themes, as follows:-

Each year group will be judged separately. .

Bakes can be large cakes, cupcakes, traybakes, biscuits, bread - you name it!

BAKES MUST NOT CONTAIN NUTS

If you would like to bake a diet-specific creation (such as Gluten Free, Egg Free etc) then, of course, that would be lovely. Please just ensure it is clearly labelled to avoid any accidental cross-contamination in the Bake Off Tent.

Please label cake carriers (base and lid), tuppaware, plates etc with full name and class to ensure safe return, and remember to claim them at the end of the day.

Unfortunately we cannot be responsible for any unlabelled items which may end up in the dishwasher in the Dining Room!

Please deliver to the Bake Off Tents at drop-off on the morning of Monday 18th October. Place entries in the relevant class section. Entries close at 9.30am.

The themes can be interpreted in a variety of ways including in the decoration, ingredients, shape......so enjoy getting creative!!

Judging will take place during the morning with all factors being taken into consideration so make sure its super yummy as well as beautiful! Winners will be announced by Mr Hardy. There will be Year Group winners, as well as runners-up for each class.

And most importantly GOOD LUCK AND HAPPY BAKING!!

Bake Off Cake Sale - Monday 18th October As has become customary after our Bake Off Competition we will be selling all of the wonderful creations that our children have made after school on 18th October. So please pop the date in your diary to come along for a cup of tea and a slice of Mr Tumnus's Teacake, or a Homemade Halloween Hobnob! (NB - if you would like to keep some or all of your creation, that is absolutely fine and we will let you know how to do this nearer the time).
