On Sunday the Friends of St Peter’s 2-8 organised an outstanding ‘Clif -Fest’, the Summer Fair of St Peter’s 2-8. Huge thanks to the school community for attending the event and all of the volunteers who supervised stalls, cooked delicious food and served refreshments in a café or bar. There were so many stalls organised for the children including Birds of Prey, a Reptile House, huge inflatables, and bouncy castles, Zorbs and speed kicks. These were in addition to stalls organised by the school community including a flower stall, tombola, reused book stalls, rugby pass competitions and even face painting led by some of the boarding pupils at St Peter’s 13-18.
Huge congratulations must go to Mrs Woolf and Mrs Dolan-Bent who organised the whole event with support from many of the Friends of St Peter’s 2-8. My huge thanks to all who helped in whatever way, including the cleaning, estates and catering teams and all of the volunteers who gave up time to support the event. I know all of the children loved the event!
Today in assembly, we were visited by a representative from our school charity, Zarach, where our house captains, together with Friends of St Peter’s 2-8,proudly presented them with a cheque for £7 500. Thank you to everyone for your continued support.

This week has been such a busy one in school. The year 3 children had a House football competition on Thursday, they went to watch the J1 (Year 4) children at 8-13 performing their summer play. They Year 2 children completed their project work on countries that our children’s family originated from. I enjoyed tasting Welsh Cakes, Irish apple and cinnamon cake, Coconut treats from Sierra Leone, Lemonade and Raspberry cake from America, apple pancakes from Poland and Chakalaka stew from South Africa.
It was so lovely to allow the children with different ancestry to most, be able to complete research in groups and present to the rest of the class about their country of origin. We have been absolutely amazed and captivated with all the wonderful items you have brought in for our whole school theme, 'Who Do You Think You Are?'. It has been lovely to see the children talk with such passion about their family heritage and contributing interesting facts about loved ones. Learning about ourselves and each other has been wonderful as it gave us an opportunity to explore our cultural heritage.
In Year 1 Rosie Maughan Brown brought in a book that has been written by her grandfather, author David Maughan Brown, who has written two books about his fight against the Apartheid in South Africa.

We were astounded to see a proud possession of Rosie's family; a photograph of her Grandfather shaking hands with Nelson Mandela.

Reception today have visited the beach and spent the day in Filey, next week we will share photos and a write up of their day.
This morning the Nursery children had their Nursery PE Showcase. We were so proud of them all and of how hard they have worked in PE this year.
We are looking forward to a final busy week which includes the Conkers Graduation on Wednesday and our End of Year Review and Celebration on Thursday. I am looking forward to the last Reception swimming lessons of the year tomorrow. Have a lovely weekend. With best wishes,

MUSIC
I can't quite believe we are almost at the end of another very busy year!
The children have all been working so hard this half term to get ready for our end of year celebrations next week from our youngest in Conkers to our Year 3's. I'd like to say a huge thank you to our fabulous team of instrumental teachers who have worked so hard with the children this year. Our concerts last half term really reflected the work they do with our children helping them to grow into fantastic musicians. Many thanks also to all our parents, encouraging your child to practice at home is not always easy, but it is really appreciated!
This week I am awarding the Music Award to all of the children in our choir. They have worked incredibly hard this half term on their songs for our End of Year Review and Celebration and I can't wait to hear them perform for you. Many thanks to our singing teacher Ms Cunnold who has worked with the choir this year, the children are sounding in fine voice and are ready to open our final celebration concert on Thursday!
I hope you have a fabulous summer break, Mrs Hayden.
Instrumental Lessons in School
As we head to the end of term I will be starting to talk to the children in Reception to Year 2 about the different instruments available to learn from September.
If your child is already learning an instrument in school and you would like them to continue, you do not need to do anything.
If your child is currently in Year 1 and has been learning the recorder, please note their lesson will become a 30min lesson from September unless you wish to give notice.
In Year 2 we usually recommend only having lessons on one musical instrument.
In Year 3, we can discuss pupils having lessons on two instruments where appropriate. If you would like to give notice on music lessons, please do so by emailing a.hayden@stpetersyork.org.uk
If you would like to sign your child up to learn a new instrument, please fill in the following form https:// stpetersyork.jotform.com/221172681611853. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact me. Mrs Hayden.
Individual Music lessons are offered for the following instruments:
Year 1 - recorders, taught in pairs. Please note you do not need to sort out a pair of children to sign your child up, our recorder teacher will sort the pairings out in September.
Year 2 and 3 lessons are all taught as individual lessons on the following instruments:
Year 2 - Recorder, piano, violin, cello and guitar
Year 3 - Recorder, piano, violin, cello, guitar, flute, clarinet, pocket cornet (smaller version of a cornet/trumpet, once the child has grown enough they can transfer onto a full sized instrument easily) or pbone (lighter version of a trombone - students once grown enough can easily transfer onto a trombone from this instrument) and drums.
The fees for 2023/24 are:
£25 per 30-minute lesson. Hire charge of £37 per term where appropriate. Please note we do not hire recorders, guitars or pianos. Children in Year 1 will have a shared lesson with another pupil. Therefore please note that tuition fees for Year 1 are £12.50 per pupil.
SchoolCouncil
Michelle, who the children know from lunchtimes in the dining room, told the children about her, very long, working day and also how she helps School Council by emptying the new compost bins every evening and making sure they are disposed of correctly to be removed by the council to go to make compost to help the environment. Thank you Michelle.
Last night Tom Swales, part of our school maintenance team, came to our meeting as the children wanted to know how the school's plans were going to reduce our energy consumption and therefore our impact on the environment.

BREAKING NEWS FROM SCHOOL COUNCIL!
The school are fitting 128 solar panels on the two sports hall rooves in two phases, the first will be completed over the summer. The power they will generate can power 11,000 Nintendo switch or 2000 computers or 7000 LED light bulbs!
60% of the school lightbulbs are now LED and soon all the lightbulbs used in school will be LED. He also explained that the cost of fitting the solar panels will be covered in 3 years and then we will use our own power at no extra cost.
Mr Swales was also able to show us one living roof in school and said he would talk to the grounds team about increasing the use of these. Thank you Mr Swales for visiting us.
It is very exciting to think school council over the last few years have helped to promote initiatives that could make our school more environmentally friendly........and now we have some fantastic results! Well done to all School Councillors - your voice has made a difference!
A busy penultimate week for sport at 2-8! Where to begin...
In true Ashes style, the main focus in our lessons has been cricket. Hand eye coordination is an essential skill and a core part of a child's development. The more practice your child can get the better!

Year 3 had some fun on Thursday in their last ever inter-house competition! The children know the routine by now and were able to enjoy the run around in good spirits. Some promising footballers coming through!

And, finally, the Nursery PE Showcase. Throughout this term, Mr Lomax and I have been working hard with our little ones to practice some of the core movements we aim to master by the time they enter Reception. On Friday, the children were able to showcase these skills to their parents, who were a fantastic (and noisy) audience! It was so lovely to see so many smiles. The children really do enjoy their PE and it makes us so proud when they're able to show this to their parents.
I'm sure this cohort will flourish moving through Reception and continue to show their sporting ability.

Summer time is the perfect time to go camping. The Acorns have enjoyed having some hands-on camping moments. During circle time, we have sung around the 'camp fire' and enjoyed pretending to warm our hands, while cautioning a few little figures that wanted to get too close to the tissue paper 'flames'.

Mrs Ferguson set out a beautiful camping scene on our Tuff tray and this has led to lots of imaginary play with the Playmobil camper van and little figures. The Acorns have practiced their hand eye co ordination using magnetic fishing rods to catch the fish in the pond.
Tents are always such fun to play in and many of the Acorns have prepared tea parties and enjoyed playing and hiding in the tents. At Forest School we also enjoyed role playing the story of the three little pig in the large tentlike hideout that some of the older children must have constructed.
Camping is a wonderful opportunity to enjoy the outdoors. We have played and enjoyed a scavenger hunt, but one of the games that has become a favourite this week is swinging on the swings. The Acorns have enjoyed swinging on the Forest School tire swing, a log swing, a fabric hammock in the playground and a rope swing. Swinging is not only beneficial for developing a child's core muscles and sense of balance, but it also stimulates different parts of a child's brain. What a relaxing and brilliant activity for children to enjoy.
It is difficult to believe that we have one week left of the school year and yet, seeing the growth and development in each little Acorn, we are astounded at what each little person has achieved.

Reception

We can’t believe this is the children’s penultimate week in Reception and it’s clear that they are ready for their next step to year one from the wonderful learning we have seen from them all this week!
The children have grown so much in confidence and independence as writers, this was certainly evident in their ‘three little pigs’ and ‘billy goats gruff ‘writing this week!
They have also amazed us in their music lessons this week, not only singing in fine voice but also learning lots of British Sign Language signs to accompany their singing, they can’t wait to show you next week!
Of course we have all been very excited about our trip to Filey and by the time this reaches you we will have had lots of fun on the beach, paddled in the sea and enjoyed our cafe lunch!

As always the children’s play has been a cornerstone of their learning and we have seen some brilliant construction, art and role play projects emerge and blossom over the week with so many learning superhero traits on show! Well done everyone!

Reception

Each child has written their hopes and dreams for their bright and shining futures in these wonderful, and truly special books. The books show the incredible progress that the children have all made this year! We hope you all love them at home and treasure them forever!

The Year 1 children have also been very busy learning about positional language in maths and have had a great time transforming themselves into turtle robots! They have all developed a great understanding of the quarter, half, three quarter and full turns and I'm sure they can direct you around your house!

Alongside all of this, the children have been using their vocal cords to their full potential in preparation for next week's End of Year Review!
Down in the swimming pool, the children have all enjoyed their final fun swim before they move up to Year 2!
We all cannot believe that you only have a few days left in Year 1!

Where has this fantastic year gone!?
Let's make sure we have the BEST final week!

Wow! What an amazing week, full of learning in Year 2!
We have continued our research into the countries that our children have connections with by preparing food, organising craft activities and then presenting our work to the rest of the class. We have worked hard on speaking and listening whilst doing this as listening is such an important skill.

There has been too much food prepared to mention but the children have dined well all week on, to name a few, Chakalaka stew from South Africa, Lemonade and Raspberry cake from America and apple pancakes from Poland.
As the end of the year hurtles towards us, we are all feeling quite emotional, including the teachers and TAs! We have a very busy 4 days planned for next week, including our trip to Bridlington on Monday, which will be great fun and lots of rehearsals ahead of the End of Year Review on Thursday. All of the children need a good rest this weekend in order to enjoy every last minute of being in Y2!

YearThree
It has been an exciting penultimate week in Year 3.
We finished reading our core text ‘The Ancient Egyptian Sleepover’ and wrote a detailed book review. It was pleasing to read such glowing reviews and from detailed discussions with the children, it is definitely a book we would recommend.
We had an Egyptian themed day on Wednesday where we baked Egyptian honey biscuits with Miss Murray, transported ourselves to Egypt using the PicCollage app with Ms Collins and designed our own themed pyramids with Mrs Salisbury.

We also added the finishing touches to our canopic jars – they are amazing! It has been wonderful to see the children so enthusiastic about our Egyptian learning, delving back in time to unpick some very interesting and incredible historical events.
Aside from our learning, we have been busy rehearsing for the End of Year Review and Celebration with Mrs Hayden and were fortunate enough to have been invited to 8-13 to watch the J1 dress rehearsal for their play. The children were blown away with the performances and some are already looking forward to participating in it next year!
Year Three

Clif Fest
Thank you! Thank you! Thank you!
A huge thank you to all the helpers, volunteers, bakers, FAs and catering staff who made Clif Fest such an amazing event, and also to those who came along, we are so grateful for your support and we hope everyone had a great time. We are delighted to have raised a significant amount for Zarach and FOSP funds – a confirmed total will be shared next week.

Clif Fest winners!
Congratulations to Kate Rodgers (3C) who correctly guessed that the name of the Clif Fest teddy was ‘Betty’ and to Arabella Wilson (J1) who correctly guessed the number of sweets in the jar!

Token Amnesty
If anyone still has, or comes across, any tokens please put them in the box in the school reception area by next Wednesday (end of day) so they can be recycled and, more importantly, we can top up our donation to Zarach by an equivalent cash value. Thank you!

Leavers Tea Towels ‘23
Well done to Y3 for creating such a beautiful leavers tea towel to remember their time at 2-8. Thank you to parents for supporting and buying the tea towels, we are pleased to say through sales we raised over £500 for FOSP and the school charity, Zarach. Many thanks to Harriet Dryden for organising this project.
