The children across the school are starting to have drama workshops that are led by Bev Veasey who teaches Drama across the whole school. The children are thoroughly enjoying these workshops, based around their themed book or stories they enjoy.

Thank you to Ms Veasey for these sessions and welcome to our school. As you are aware over the past term, we have advertised for Mrs Pennels replacement. I am delighted to let you know that Mrs Pennels will be returning to school on Monday and is excited about working with the children.

On Wednesday we had many Governors who visited the school to observe how we embed technology into our teaching. They visited many classes and saw children using Green Screens creating films, children using code to manipulate robots, children using QR codes to complete challenges in the classroom and using iPads to become authors, evening the children were editing the most wonderful giving a challenge to grow pieces of writing into bacteria and on Friday the commercial books. Railway Museum on Thursday and had a brilliant time learning about how steam trains work, mechanics and the notion of speed. The children and staff had a great time and there are photographs and a report later in the newsletter.

It has been STEM week this week at St Peter’s 2-8. It started with a brilliant assembly led by Miss Murray who explained all the amazing activities that were happening throughout the week both in school and science challenges at home. Notice Board DAY FOR UKRAINE Pupils and staff alike have been looking for opportunities to support the people of Ukraine. We have therefore decided that, as a whole foundation, we will run a non-uniform day on Wednesday 23rd March. The cost to pupils will be £1, to be collected on the day, and they are encouraged to wear yellow and blue clothing wherever possible.

For as long as the conflict lasts, we have also taken the decision that our fundraising in Chapel should be given to the Red Cross to support their work in Ukraine. We are also exploring links with a local charity who take supplies out to those who have been displaced by the conflict. We are therefore looking for donations of the following items, all of which can be brought to the Vestry or to the School Chapel: 

Some pictures from our first week back at playgroup!

School Council Council have had a busy couple of weeks following our eco schools presentation to the whole school. Mr Robinson the catering manager came to see us about things that are going to change in the dining room to make the school more environmentally friendly and use food

waste more effectively. Council are hoping to help him implement this with using the new recycling bins and explaining to our classes how to use them.

We also went on a litter picking walk as part of our joint eco schools work with St Peter’s 13-18.

STEM Week Well done and thank you to all of the children who took part in the STEM activities at home this week. We received some fantastic pictures of children (and grown-ups!) displaying great resilience to overcome the challenges and were very impressed, particularly with the card towers! We have heard many failure/success stories with this activity, and it has been wonderful to hear the tales of spirit and sheer determination to overcome the difficulties faced. In the words of Albert Einstein “In order to succeed, your desire for success should be greater than your fear of failure.”

In school we have been celebrating STEM in our classes and have had great fun carrying out experiments, setting up mind boggling maths challenges and engineering some impressive structures. Please don’t forget to send in pictures/videos from today’s challenge so that we can share our new found skills with the rest of school in assembly next week.

On Monday morning, Year 2 took part in their Inter-House Netball Competition. The sun was shining, and the children approached the playground with great big smiles on their faces, ready to start the competition. This competition was a fantastic opportunity to work with other members of their house who they may have not played with before, to build on communication and teamwork skills. It was heart warming to see all the children being so kind to one another, helping the children on court with tactical awareness and encouraging each other when cheering on their house throughout the competition.

I am delighted with all the Year 2 children; with how much resilience they have displayed throughout their netball lessons. As a year group, the children completed

PE

zoom PE lessons working on their netball skills last year during lockdown and I have been really impressed with how well they have adopted the skills and flourished in confidence during mini matches this year. I was amazed with how quickly the children have picked up the complex rules of netball, grasping not to run with the ball but knowing they can pivot around to see where their teammates are positioned and the tactics behind the game in order to get in front of their opposition, by constantly moving into space.

Exceptional work Year 2, Miss Hopper and I are very proud of what you have accomplished within netball this year!

ACORNS

‘Chick chick chick chick chicken, lay a little egg for me!’

So much excitement in Acorns as our little chicks have hatched. We have learnt our little chick song in music, and we have been fluttering about like baby chicks. During our morning song the Acorns have ‘cracked’ out of their eggs and it has been delightful to see

their enthusiasm. Apart from fluffy chicks in our class, we were able to have a lovely walk down to the river and had a picnic on the benches. The children loved running about in the open space and found sticks which became fire hoses to extinguish the fires. We have now learnt about three lifecycles: the butterfly, the

chicken and the frog.

Now that spring is almost upon us, we have managed to gather some frog spawn to have in our classroom too. We really do feel like our classroom has become a place of investigation and exploration with our chicks and frog spawn. It has been a marvellous week.

Fee Fi Fo Fum, I smell... Spring is in the air!

This week our new traditional tale, Jack and the Beanstalk, has got us all excited about the world around us! We have decided we want to plant our own magic beans and seeds to investigate what happens, so we’ve been busy gardening in preparation. Next, we discovered something incredible had been laid in the pond… frogspawn! We are all hoping that by looking after them we will see them grow and change from tadpoles into frogs!

Wow! What a week we have had in Reception! We have loved STEM week; growing our own broad beans, devising a cress and mustard controlled experiment, designing paper bridges, towers and buildings and testing their strength!

RECEPTION

The children found out all about Holi through books and presentations then enjoyed some delicious Indian treats made by our school chef, made mango lassi and Holi biscuits

We have also been practising our class assembly, well done to all the children who have been practising their line to say at home too, you are superstars and we can't wait to share our learning with parents next week!

RECEPTION

YEAR 1 This week has been an emotional rollercoaster as we entered the Land of Tempers! Visiting this land has been a lovely opportunity to discuss our emotions and how we can recognise different emotions in other people.

We decided to study Picasso and his classic abstract face art before using different mediums to create our own abstract emotion art. We had to choose the colours that we felt represented that emotion or feeling and carefully shade in our abstract faces.

Performance poetry revealed itself to be a great

opportunity for expressing different emotions and we thoroughly enjoyed watching Michael Rosen perform Chocolate Cake and No Breathing in Class before learning and performing a poem of our own, called Isabel and the Bear.

We have really enjoyed using our acting skills this week in anticipation of the class assemblies in the upcoming weeks. We cannot wait to show off everything we have learnt this term!

YEAR 1

YEAR 2 This week Year 2 have wandered into the wonderful chapter 'The Lobster- Quadrille'. The children had a fantastic morning with Mrs Birch learning how to dance a 'Lobster' quadrille! The children- or should I say lobsters- had to partner up and dance, all while instructed by the Gryphon and as the Mock-Turtle sang!

What a bizarre scene, which got us thinking about the bizarre creatures we have met in the last few chapters of the text. Over the week we have enjoyed reading a selection of animal Flip Flap books by the author Axel Scheffler which inspired us to create our own 'half and half' animals. We painted our amazing creatures on brown paper using watercolours and outlined our designs with black ink. In Literacy we then learnt about rhyming strings and created our own mini 'Flip Flap' books!

In science we have been learning all about pollination! We became very busy little bees,

buzzing around the classrooms and brushing pollen onto our feet and drinking nectar! Maths this week has been focused around 3D shapes and the children have enjoyed completing STEM challenges and building 3D models, towers and nets. During our Forest School sessions we have been busy preparing for our Wonderland Garden Party next week with some planting, sign making and fairy garden designing!

We will be hosting our very own Wonderland inspired Garden Party at Forest School on Thursday and will spend the week preparing for what promises to be a lovely afternoon of lawn games, dancing and a delicious afternoon tea!

YEAR 2

It has been a very fun, STEM themed week of learning in Year 3. We begun on Monday by learning about the diet of a polar bear; discovering what they eat, how many calories they need to eat in order to sustain themselves and their food chain. We went on to use our imaginations to create a tasty three course meal for Bear in our story, based on our previous learning. The choices ranged from scrumptious, juicy prawn cocktails to battered cod to seal nuggets with a tasty (!) blood dip!

We then wrote the descriptions of our courses and typed them up on the iPads, using the Pic Collage app to edit the text and add images. In Science we continued our learning about harmful greenhouse gases and using sweets and tooth picks, made mini models of their components. We also carried out an ocean acidification experiment using carbonate water and red cabbage water and learnt about the Midnight sun which features heavily in our story. As the theme for STEM week is growth, we decided to incorporate this with our thematic learning. April continues to feed Bear

YEAR 3

oat biscuits as he is constantly hungry, so we thought we would help by baking some of our own to give to him. We used baking powder and talked about its role within baking and why it is such an important ingredient; ultimately helping it to rise! We were also lucky enough to have Lizzie’s daddy come in to talk to us all about his polar adventures. The challenges he faced and the level of endurance, resilience and strength needed for such an adventure were clear to see, but it hasn’t put our enthusiastic explorers off!

In maths we have come to the end of our work on Area and Perimeter and have thoroughly enjoyed measuring and working out tricky problems. Lots of children have participated in this week’s STEM challenges at home and we are very impressed with the resilience and patience the children have shown towards tackling each activity.

YEAR 3

Curry & Quiz Night - Friday 18th March Quiz Night is TONIGHT! Please remember it is a CASH DONATIONS BAR so you need to bring cash with you.

Please arrive at 7.30pm when we will serve Welcome Drinks and ensure everyone has a team. We will then start prompt at 8pm. Curry will be served at approximately 8.45pm. We usually finish between 10.30pm and 11pm.

Nearly New Uniform Sale Thank you to everyone who purchased from the Nearly New Uniform sale last week. We are looking in to dates for more sales next term (including at least one sale per half term for Year 3 parents to purchase 8-13 uniform). We will let you know as soon as these are arranged.

We have also had numerous enquiries about uniform donations. As soon as we have sorted the stock which is left after the sale, we will let you know what items we are in need of. Thank you.
