It has been an extremely busy week at St Peter’s 2-8. There is so much packed into this newsletter reflecting a small part of the many learning opportunities the children have experienced.
In their learning themes this week, the children in Year 3 have been busy exploring the region of Patagonia and learning all about albatross birds as part of their theme, Riding the Americas. Year 2 have been studying polar bears, learning all about their habitat, what they like to eat, the colour of their fur etc. They have also done some wonderful drawings of polar bears which are on display in the classrooms, you may have seen them if you popped in this morning. Year 1 have been focussing on the music of the Beatles, who dominated the charts in the 1960s. This has included singing songs from their greatest hits, making musical instruments, designing and making 1960s costumes and writing nonfiction reports. Just how they’ve managed to fit quite so much into five days is simply astonishing! In keeping with the current climate, children in Reception have been analysing frozen ponds, toys and plants, discussing how ice affects them whilst also identifying shapes and patterns in the ice. They also enjoyed celebrating the start of the Lunar New Year, China’s most important festival. The reception classrooms had been transformed overnight and are now adorned with beautiful decorations which have helped to inspire the children as they have been drawing rabbits, the new year animal. Well done, Reception. Nursery have also been busy celebrating the Lunar New Year, making a special visit to a local Chinese supermarket earlier in the week, where they explored the different foods that are available and made some rather tasty purchases!

responsibility of Jack, Harriet and Kalina, who were simply brilliant. I am delighted to announce that this term our House Captains are Freya (Micklegate), Hugo (Monk) and Manny (Walmgate). Well done to you all.
On Tuesday the Year 2 children competed in an Inter -house netball competition. With the weather reaching freezing
that need to happen before that moment.
temperatures we had to quickly take the decision to move these matches indoors, using the sports facilities at 8-13. Fortunately, this didn’t detract from the competition, and I was delighted to see all the children fully engaging in the activity, playing well and enjoying the experience of competing against one another whilst representing their house. On Thursday it was the turn of the Year 3 children who once again had a competitive tournament. The champions this year in Year 2 were Micklegate and in Year 3 Monk. The overall winners were Monk and the trophy was presented to the new House Captain, Hugo in assembly this morning.
Our physical education programme at school is centred around developing physical literacy in all children. Physical literacy can be described as the motivation, confidence, physical competence, knowledge and understanding that provides children with the movement foundation for lifelong participation in physical activity. Enabling them to be physically literate supports children’s physical, cognitive, social and emotional development and creates healthy, active movers. At St Peter’s 2-8 we aim to develop these skills through our physical education programme, developing fundamental movement and sport skills. Early childhood is the ‘sensitive’ learning period when skills such as running, throwing, catching, hitting, kicking in addition to levels of strength, speed and flexibility are learnt and help physical literacy be achieved in adulthood.
Children need to have physical movement to grow and develop muscles and help the surrounding tissue strengthen so they can gain better control of their bodies. This is also called Fundamental Movement Skills. It is the foundation and structure of being physically active.
Just like when a child is learning to read and write there are basic structures to make this happen. A child does not automatically know how to run, there are various things
Children at St Peter’s 2-8 learn movement and sport skills on the ground – the basis of most games, sports, dances and physical activities and in the water – the basis of all aquatic activities. There is a short animation below from an organisation, Physical Education with a Purpose from Canada Introduction to Physical and Health Literacy
On Thursday the Year 2 children visited Yorkshire Wildlife Park as part of their theme ‘Arctic Explorers’. They all thoroughly enjoyed themselves and learned so many fascinating facts about Polar Bears from the workshop they attended. It was a relief to see that they all arrived at school appropriately dressed for the arctic drop in temperature, given they were spending the day outdoors! Huge thanks to all the staff who accompanied the children on the trip and in particular, Miss Jeffery who had organised the visit. Today three of our children attended the auditions to be a Chorister. Being selected to audition is a huge achievement and I know they will have all tried hard and hopefully enjoyed the experience. My thanks to Mrs Hayden who has supported them throughout the process and ensured they were fully prepared for the auditions this morning. We ended the week with a fabulous Chinese banquet in the dining room, where the children were encouraged to eat with chopsticks, not easy for such little hands! Well done to all the children (and staff) who tried. My thanks to Chef Stuart and the dining staff for creating such a delicious feast for everyone to enjoy.
I hope you have a wonderful weekend.

This week saw the Inter-house Netball Competitions for Year 2 and Year 3. On Tuesday, students, teachers and parents alike visited St Peter’s 8-13 School where each child played 6 matches of netball. The children did brilliantly well, showing their resilience and most certainly put on a show for their parents. Netball can have some challenging footwork rules, but our Year 2's demonstrated a fantastic understanding of the game and showed great promise for the future.
Thursday saw the Year 3's have their turn. We were delighted with all of the Year 3 children with how much resilience they have displayed throughout their netball lessons. We have been really impressed with how well they have adopted the skills and flourished in confidence during mini matches this year. The children have picked up the complex skills of netball, grasping not to run with the ball but knowing they can pivot around to see where their teammates are stood. An excellent display!
As always with our interhouse competitions, it takes a team effort to pull off such a well coordinated event. A huge thank you goes, deservedly, to Miss Flockhart, the sports grads, the Class teachers and TAs. Another important thank you to the grounds staff and catering team, who were extremely supportive. We had some rearranging to do due to the weather, and we appreciate your ongoing support and understanding regarding this. A second thank you is for the children; your hard work and commitment was displayed in your very competitive games. A real credit to you. And, lastly, thank you to all the parents and guardians for coming to support your children, your attendance definitely encourages the children to do their very best!
School Council
Last week saw the voting take place in each class for their new School Council representatives. Mr Hardy awarded the new members their badges in assembly on Monday morning and congratulated each one on being chosen by their peers to be the voice for their classes at our weekly Council Meetings.
The new Council members are Rosie, Arlo, Theo, Tori. Thomas and Izzy in Year 1, Louis, Mimi, Henry, Matilda, Thomas and River in Year 2 and Giorgio, Sofia, Dilarum, Kiron, Eddie and Amara in Year 3.
At our first meeting we had a visit from Mrs D'Arcy who is a new Teaching Assistant in Year 1. The children enjoyed finding out more about her and welcoming her to our school. Mrs D'Arcy was very pleased to meet children from other year groups and find out more about School Council. Well done Council!

YEAR ONE
We have had a fabulous week in Year One as we come to the end of the 1960's! We have been singing and performing Beatles songs nonstop and rocking out on stage with our friends. We have also been designing and making fabulous outfits from the 60's too. One of our favourite songs has been 'Yellow Submarine' and we have been inspired to draw our ownlook out for these round school next week. We have also been experimenting with sound and making our own musical instruments. There have been some brilliant designs and the children have been using these when performing on stage.
In Literacy, we have been writing non-fiction reports about The Beatles. We want to inform our friends around school about the fab four! We have been using full sentences to answer question such as 'Who were The Beatles?' ' Why were they so famous?' 'Where did they live?' 'What are their most famous songs?' We are so proud of the children and how much they know about The Beatles!
We are really looking forward to our trip to Eureka next Wednesday and 'grooving' our way
Y e a r 2
This week has been Polar Bear week in Year 2…but rather a lot of other things have happened as well! We have been learning how to research factual information which can be particularly challenging for children today as they can easily be overwhelmed by the amount of information available to them. The children have been fascinated by these beautiful but dangerous creatures and we have learnt, amongst other facts that: there are only approximately 25000 polar bears on Earth, 80% of them live in Canada, polar bears actually have black skin and their fur is not actually white! On Thursday we headed off to the Yorkshire Wildlife Park, where we took part in an informative workshop on polar bears which gave us even MORE facts! We then explored the rest of the site, catching site of lions, capybaras, camels, giraffes, a TIGER, and most excitingly, we had a close up view of a leopard which came right up to the viewing glass!
In art we have been painting pictures of polar bears standing on ice floes in the sea ice, using blue to paint shadow colours on white, as Mrs Hall taught us!
We even squeezed in a brilliant Inter House Netball tournament on Tuesday morning, which had to be quickly relocated down to 8-13 as the courts were so icy. The children demonstrated the netball skills to the teachers and parents who were all suitably impressed!
Wednesday saw us start our drama sessions with Ms Veasey from the St Peter’s drama department, who used physical drama to explore different animals.
Another busy but enjoyable week in Year 2.
Mrs Franey has been working with Year 2 on the importance of friendship. She has covered different aspects of friendship such as sharing, being kind and taking turns by reading stories and making a collaborative poster. The children have all enjoyed these lunchtime sessions and presented their work this week so that all of Year 2 could benefit from it.
Thank you Mrs Franey and thank you Year 2!
