Message from the Principal

This week we have started our options process with year 9 pupils. Mr Mclean has spoken with pupils in assembly to explain the process of selecting option subjects and the timeline for providing pupils and their families with further information. Due to the strike action dates we have re-scheduled the options evening which will now take place on Wednesday, 08 March 2023. This week we have begun making contingency plans for Wednesday, 01 February. Currently, with the limited information available to us, we are seeking to ensure we can safeguard all pupils if they were required to attend the Academy. We have not yet ruled out a full closure of the Academy site, this will be a last resort but may prove the safest option available to us. We recognise that this will lead to disruption and duly apologise. Please be assured we are placing the pupils at the centre of our decisionmaking.

Quality of Education

Year 11 and 13 mock exams

Year 11 students have recently completed their mock GCSE exams. Our team of invigilators were delighted with the conduct of students in the exams and there will be a lot to learn from that first exam experience. Staff are now marking the exams and they will be giving marks and grades back to students over the next couple of weeks. For students the mock exams are a critical opportunity to gain an understanding of strengths and areas for further work. Teachers will be helping students identify areas for revision over the coming weeks.

Year 7 RE ‘Ultimate Questions’

Congratulations to students in 7X2 on their recent RE assessment. Students have been exploring what Christians believe about God and produced arguments to answer some of the 'ultimate questions'. They have produced some brilliantly written and thoughtful extended arguments.

Congratulations to Marcel, Harsimran, Tariq, and Rebecca who all achieved full marks.

Homework

We hope that all of our students grow into independent and self-motivated learners and homework is an important part of that developing independence. Homework for students in year 7 to 11 is set on class charts.

Most of our parents and students have the class charts app. If you do not have access, please click here: ClassCharts Link.

Students should expect a variety of tasks across subjects, set in different formats such as paper-based, Google classroom, other online platforms, reading and research tasks.

Rewards Trip – Friday, 20 January 2023

Two students with the highest achievement points in each year group were selected for the first rewards trip from year groups 7-13. They were presented with a Golden Ticket to take part in the trip.

On the day we met students at the train station and made our way to New Street Station. We walked through Birmingham City Centre to the Mailbox where students were treated to a coffee and cake at Medicine Bakery.

From the Mailbox we walked along the canals and made a stop at the Central Library taking in the scenery from the balcony. Students absolutely loved the library and talked about the books being 'a wall of knowledge'

Next stop was the infamous Bull. We managed to beat some crowds and got some lovely photos with the Bull. We then headed to Tree Top Golf in the BullRing Shopping Centre.

Students got into teams, and we played mini golf for the afternoon. We joined in too! It was amazing to see the students compete and have fun. It was pizza and mocktails for lunch which went down well.

Students were impeccable outside of school just as much as they are inside school, displaying all aspects of our school values. We felt proud to say that they were our St Peter’s students.

Planning is underway for our next reward trip!

Safeguarding

Attendance

At St Peter’s we are extremely proud that we have been recognised as being in the top 10% of similar Secondary Schools in England for attendance. Excellent attendance to school is an essential element of our students making outstanding progress in their academic studies and moving onto the destinations of their choice.

Reporting absence

We have recently changed our absence reporting procedure. If you are not familiar with it, the details are provided here. If your child is ill and is unable to attend school please email attendance@stpetersacademy.org.uk before 8:30am. It is imperative that we are aware as early as possible to ensure that our registers are accurate.

If your child is struggling to attend the academy please reach out to us on attendance@stpetersacademy.org.uk and we will work together to put support in place to help your son/daughter’s attendance to improve.

United Against Bullying

St Peter’s has signed up to the United Against Bullying program in order to reduce the number of bullying incidents, and to ensure that any that do occur are dealt with in a timely manner and there is a high level of support provided to the children involved.

This program has been developed by the Anti-Bullying Alliance and is supported by the Department for Education. So far, we have completed an audit of the academy’s policies, procedures and response to bullying. We have also gathered the thoughts and feelings of the students. These are going to be used to highlight

areas that require improvement and between now and the end of the Summer term we shall be putting steps in place to make sure we improve our Anti-Bullying practices at St Peter’s .

If you, or your child, are concerned about bullying please email safeguarding@stpetersacademy.org.uk or speak to a member of staff.

Supporting your child’s mental wellbeing

If you have concerns about your child’s wellbeing and would like to direct them to resources for support then please let us know at St Peter’s. We have a wide range of provisions to support the children including Finley (our therapy dog), draw & talk and our GRASP groups. We can always place referrals into external agencies such as our Mental Health Support Team who come into school on a Tuesday from the NHS. This is an early intervention service. We can also refer to Children and Adolescent Mental Health Services (CAMHs) directly from the academy.

Alternatively, we also recommend Kooth.com which is an online service which is designed specifically to support young people and their mental wellbeing. Please follow this link for more information: www.kooth.com
