Public Benefit and Philanthropy Report 2023-24

Page 1

I am proud to lead a school with a strong sense of responsibility, making meaningful strides in social impact both at St Paul’s School and beyond. So much of this is made possible by the generosity of our wider community.

Making a

The 2023–24 academic year marked the successful conclusion of our five-year Shaping Our Future campaign, and the launch of our Shaping Our Future: Next Steps campaign to continue our work in bursaries and partnerships.

As we face significant financial challenges, including the addition of VAT on school fees, I’m encouraged by the Governors’ steadfast commitment to building on our fundraising efforts for the future. Our goal is to raise £8.5 million over the next two years, allowing us to support 10% of our pupil body with bursaries and to continue strengthening our community partnerships.

difference

In this spirit of growth, we have renamed our bursary programme the Founder’s Awards. This reframing reflects our desire to instill confidence and pride in our bursary recipients, who are essential members of the St Paul’s community and add to the social mix of the school, benefitting all. Currently, we are supporting 138 pupils through this initiative, and with the appointment of Catherine Bennett as our new Head of Bursaries, we are wellpositioned to expand this support even further.

Our partnership work has grown significantly, now reaching over 4,000 young people each year and providing numerous opportunities for our own pupils to engage and learn. Initiatives such as the Barnes Children’s Literature Festival, St Paul’s School Primary World Cup Football Day, and the Lower Eighth Volunteering Programme enable our pupils to connect with both the local and wider community. Additionally, conferences and career days foster collaboration with St Paul’s Girls’ School and schools in the state sector, enhancing our commitment to a ‘best of both worlds’ approach to single-sex education and widening the horizons for all pupils involved in these initiatives. These partnerships not only enrich the educational experiences of our pupils and staff but also create a positive and lasting impact more widely. By addressing genuine needs and nurturing strong, reciprocal relationships, we ensure that St Paul’s continues to play a meaningful role beyond its walls.

I hope you enjoy reading this report, which highlights the many achievements made possible by the support of our community. Whether through financial contributions, volunteering your time, or attending events, your involvement has been invaluable and we are deeply grateful for your continued support.

Partnerships

St Paul’s In Partnership

As this report highlights, it has been another busy year for St Paul’s Partnerships. Alongside embedding ourselves more deeply in the West London area – with more than ten of our teachers regularly working in partnership with local state schools and a record number of Paulines volunteering – we are also building links with national Multi-Academy Trusts to widen our impact across the country through our residential summer schools and digital offerings.

We were delighted to launch a new partnership with UCL’s Mullard Space Science Laboratory for our inaugural Space School, which complements our long-standing and award-winning Magic Materials, and Particle Physics Schools.

At the local level, we have built new charity partnerships fully embedded into our new House system, raising over £40,000 for these and other partners. Furthermore, our entrepreneurship programme continues to thrive. As part of the Start It programme, we have supported the Young Enterprise provision of four local state schools, including two joint teams.

As a result of these initiatives, over 4,000 partner school students have benefited from the various programmes, representing almost 50,000 hours of activity!

Founder’s Awards

Philanthropy at St Paul’s

St Paul’s has a long history of philanthropy dating back to its founding in 1509 by John Colet, then Dean of St Paul’s Cathedral. Colet established the school to educate boys “from all nacions and countres indifferently.” His founding donation covered the fees for 153 pupils until the mid-1600s when the school began admitting fee-paying pupils.

For many years, the only payment required from pupils was a wax candle – a tradition that continued until the early 1800s.

To mark the launch of the Shaping Our Future: Next Steps campaign, and to honour Colet while celebrating those awarded bursaries at St Paul’s, the school introduced the name Founder’s Awards for its overall bursary programme. This rebranding aimed to reposition the scheme and ensure recipients feel confident about their place within the school community.

With a focus on increasing the number of recipients and supporting families already receiving bursaries, Catherine Bennett joined St Paul’s as the new Head of Bursaries at the end of 2023.

Catherine has met with over 70 families currently receiving a Founder’s Award to gather feedback on the programme and identify areas for improvement. As a result, several changes have been implemented to ensure pupils on a Founder’s Award can fully participate in the diverse academic and co-curricular opportunities at St Paul’s.

To further raise the profile of Founder’s Awards, Catherine actively engages with prospective families at Admissions events and participates in the Primary Professors programme, which supports Year 5 pupils from low-income families.

*The dip in bursaries reflects natural fluctuations, as the numbers depend on the distribution of bursary recipients across year groups. Since Catherine Bennett's appointment as Head of Bursaries in 2023, her focus on promoting bursary opportunities and removing barriers to entry has contributed to continued growth in bursary numbers.

Pupils in receipt of a Founder’s Award who left St Paul’s in the summer of 2024, are now studying at some of the top universities in the UK, including the Universities of Oxford, Cambridge and Imperial College London. Degree subjects include Medicine, Engineering, Mathematics, Chemistry and Politics. With an increasing number of pupils at St Paul’s deciding to study at universities in America, one of our recent Founder’s Award recipients has just started his degree at Harvard University.

Philanthropy

This report celebrates the incredible achievements of the past year, made possible through the unwavering support of our community. Among the most significant milestones has been the launch of the Shaping Our Future: Next Steps campaign, underscoring our deep and continued commitment to bursaries and partnerships.

I am also proud of how our events and communication channels have brought so many of us together, keeping us all connected and informed. From New Parents’ Welcomes and House Socials to Topical Tuesdays and Professional Networking events, our calendar has been filled with engaging opportunities. Flagship occasions like the Spring Fling, Thomas Gresham Quiz, and the Henley Royal Regatta Reception have also brought our community together. Alongside these events, our active social media channels have kept everyone connected. It has been a joy meeting so many of you.

Shaping Our Future: Next Steps

Philanthropy at St Paul’s plays a significant role in the culture of our school. Across our entire community of students, current and former parents, Old Paulines, staff, and friends, we are consistently overwhelmed by the support we receive in the form of donations at all levels, as well as through their time, ideas, and attendance at events.

The close of our Shaping Our Future campaign at the end of August 2023 celebrated the generosity of our community coming together to raise £15.7 million for bursaries, partnerships, and buildings. Following this phenomenal success, there was careful deliberation over the next steps towards continuing our commitment to the school’s vision for the future – one that is accessible to all and benefits those beyond our school gates – whilst remaining sensitive to the current climate in Independent Schools and the potential impacts of this.

St Paul’s has always worked to honour John Colet’s original founding legacy, shaping a brighter future for countless generations of Paulines to come, and in more recent years, for children from our partnership programme. In May of 2024, we launched our new campaign, Shaping Our Future: Next Steps – a two-year, mid-term campaign with two clear objectives. The first is to focus on widening access to provide bursary support for 10% (approximately 151) of our pupil cohort, ensuring that financial barriers do not deter bright pupils from applying to St Paul’s. The second is to grow our wellestablished partnership programme, broadening our offering to our local and national community of partner schools and organisations. Much like the previous campaign we have set an ambitious target: to raise £8.5 million by August 2026.

This past year has shown continued commitment from our community, and the collective strength we can achieve when everyone joins in, according to their means. Thank you.

Noah Zhou OP (2014-19)

Piano Recital

On Friday 6 October 2023, pianist and former bursary recipient Noah Zhou (2014–19) gave a recital in the Wathen Hall in aid of the bursary appeal. Noah, who won a full scholarship to the Royal Academy of Music after leaving St Paul’s, has just embarked on a busy solo career.

Spring Fling 2024

Earlier in the day, he worked with Justin and Michael, two of our promising young pianists, in an intimate masterclass that left both pupils buzzing with inspiration and ideas. In the evening, a supportive audience –including some former pupils from Noah’s time at St Paul’s –was treated to a brilliant recital. The programme featured works by Haydn, Janáček, and Liszt, culminating in Mussorgsky’s iconic Pictures at an Exhibition

It was a truly special occasion and a wonderful opportunity to welcome Noah back to the Wathen Hall, a space he said held warm memories for him and one he had been eagerly anticipating revisiting. The evening raised a total of £1,760.

Our highly anticipated annual Spring Fling celebrated its 12th year in March, held at the Hurlingham Club in Fulham. Parents from both St Paul’s School and St Paul’s Juniors came together for an unforgettable evening in support of our Shaping Our Future: Next Steps campaign. The evening saw 183 guests join us to champion the Founder’s Awards and Partnerships programmes. Special guest and former Vice-Captain of the school, Mustapha Sadiq OP (2022-24), gave a profound speech about his experience of being awarded a Founder’s Award and the deep impact it has had on both his life and his family’s. Everyone had a fantastic time, enjoying both a silent and live auction, music from our staff and OP bands, and raising £216,000 on the night. To date, the Spring Fling has raised a phenomenal £1.51 million.

Shaping Our Future: Next Steps Launch Event

In late May 2024, we celebrated the launch of the Shaping Our Future: Next Steps campaign at the National Portrait Gallery. Overlooked by a number of portraits of esteemed Old Paulines, guests had the opportunity to hear from Dan Snow OP (1992-97) about his time at St Paul’s, the impact it has had on his life and what a St Paul's education can truly mean to those who are able to access the school through the bursary and partnership programmes. Guests enjoyed the opportunity to roam the rooms and meet staff members involved in each project area that we will be supporting through the campaign, across all areas of bursaries and partnerships.

Leavers’ Bursary Appeal 2024

As our Upper Eighth reached the end of their time with us here at the school, parents came together to mark their departure with generous donations of their deposits in support of our Leavers’ Bursary Appeal. Thanks to the support of our leaving families, we raised £64,300 towards bursaries, which will enable a bursary pupil to attend St Paul’s for two years. Thank you to our Class of 2024 parents.

The Thomas Gresham Committee (TGC)

A key part of pupil fundraising at St Paul’s is our TGC, which is made up of a group of Lower Eighth and Upper Eighth students. The TGC was created in 2016 by four Upper Eighth students who wanted to give back to the school community. They aim to raise awareness and celebrate our bursary programme and fundraise for a specific TG Founder’s Award – a full 100% bursary awarded to the highestachieving 11+ candidate in need of financial support.

Last year’s committee was made up of pupils: Jacob, Finn, Riccardo, Rohan, Dara, Zac, Danyal, Teo, Enyu, and Kynan, all of whom made an incredible impact during their time in these roles, raising a total of £11,200. Over the past year, they worked to host fundraising events and engage with both the senior and junior schools. This included the TG Quiz Night, SPJ Readathon, end-of-year Own Clothes Day, sweet sale, and more. Their huge effort has brought the total raised since the committee was established to over £200,000.

SPJ Sports Fundraiser

The annual SPJ Sports Fundraiser took place on Saturday 20 April and it was bigger and better than ever! Attendees enjoyed a fun-filled day of sport, food, prizes, and fundraising. We were delighted to have raised almost £22,000.

In addition to the SPJ House Football finals, parents competed in an exciting five-a-side tournament. Participants of all fitness levels and abilities joined in, making it a truly inclusive event. The day also featured some SPJ teacher all-stars in a thrilling ‘Beat the Teacher Goalie’ competition.

“Equality of access to a great education, to music, to drama and to sporting opportunities, has always been important to me. Working on the TGC has allowed me to do something practical to ensure that a St Paul’s education is made available to someone who would not otherwise be able to experience everything this school has to offer.”
Dara, Member of the TG Committee 2023-25

The Sartori di Borgoricco Family

Our journey with St Paul’s began when both our sons joined in the same year, at 11+ and 13+. We were immediately captivated by St Paul’s vibrant environment, which fosters not only academic excellence but also personal growth. The breadth of opportunities available to them was remarkable –from arts and sports to community engagement – all of which helped shape their characters and aspirations as they progressed within St Paul’s School and beyond. We are truly grateful for the young men they have become.

As passionate advocates for educational equity, we have long been involved in initiatives aimed at improving access for underrepresented youth, firmly believing in the transformative power of education to uplift individuals and communities. When we first approached the Development Office, Ellie took the time to understand our values and aspirations. She introduced us to various projects in need of support, and we were deeply impressed by the school’s commitment to reaching more pupils from underrepresented groups across the UK.

Inspired by this vision, we decided to sponsor the Summer School: a residential programme for boys from across the UK. This initiative not only offers unique learning experiences but also fosters lasting connections between those pupils and St Paul’s. The feedback we received after the first summer was nothing short of moving. Pupils spoke of pursuing their passions and developing their talents in an environment that champions curiosity and creativity. Some may return for further programmes, and one has even become a full-time St Paul’s pupil.

Projects like the Summer School, which aim to create a more inclusive educational landscape, rely on collaborative partnerships with supporters. We truly enjoyed following its development and appreciated the consistent updates throughout each phase. It was exciting to see the programme take shape under the enthusiastic leadership of St Paul’s tutors, and we valued the opportunity to stay engaged—a meaningful way to stay connected with the school.

Building to Inspire

A cornerstone of our concluded Renewal Campaign and Shaping Our Future campaign was the ambitious project to update and enhance our school buildings.

A world-class campus

This initiative was driven by our commitment to providing the best possible facilities for our students, ensuring that our educational environment is both inspiring and conducive to learning. Through these campaigns, we have transformed our infrastructure, creating state-of-the-art classrooms and facilities and vibrant communal spaces. The two final pieces in this puzzle are the rebuild of the St Paul’s Junior School building and the plans to re-develop the boathouse.

St Paul’s Juniors

The ambitious rebuild of the St Paul’s Junior School building, which commenced in June 2023, is progressing smoothly and is on track for completion by the end of 2025. This extensive project aims to create a modern, dynamic learning environment tailored to the needs of our younger pupils. Significant milestones have already been achieved, including the completion of foundational work and the initial stages of structural development. As we look forward to the unveiling of the new Junior School, we look forward to a seamless transition for our pupils and staff. The new facilities will provide state-of-the-art classrooms, innovative learning spaces and enhanced outdoor areas, all designed to foster creativity, engagement, and academic excellence.

A Boathouse fit for the 21st Century

Rowing is woven into the very fabric of St Paul’s. In 1830, a Pauline Four competed against Merchant Taylors’ School in the earliest recorded athletic event in SPS history.

In this year, a Pauline Four competed in the first recorded athletic event at the school

153 years of the St Paul’s School Boat Club

109

pupils took part in this year’s National School’s Regatta

8 wins in the Princess Elizabeth Challenge Cup at Henley Royal Regatta

Some pupils will row for a few years of their time at St Paul’s, but many will continue in the sport and maintain the friendships it has brought them long after they leave school. Old Pauline rowers have represented Great Britain in the World Championships, winning four gold medals since 2022, and the Olympics, winning two bronze medals in Paris in 2024.

It has been 50 years since our current boathouse was opened. The boathouse sits at the north-east corner of the school site near the halfway mark of the Championship Course: the stretch of the Thames used for the Oxford and Cambridge Boat Race. It is one of the oldest CLASP buildings on site, and without this refurbishment would require replacement by the end of the 2020s. With the support of our community, we are keen to introduce changes that will better support

the needs of the programme and withstand the growing numbers of pupils interested in this sport.

Our plan is to lay a path around the boathouse to the riverfront, featuring 140 inscribed flagstones

Highly visible at the heart of the school, this path will be a lasting monument to our pupils, parents, OPs and staff, and will be a focal point at St Paul’s for generations to come.

For a donation of £750 your gift will be recognised on a flagstone, with a two-line message, of 16 characters per line (including spaces and punctuation).

If you would like to find out more about supporting the Boathouse Campaign, please contact Ellie Sleeman, Strategic Director of Development, Engagement and Marketing at community@stpaulsschool.org.uk

Finances

Despite facing a number of financial challenges in the short term including the introduction of VAT on school fees and the loss of charitable business rates relief, the school is in a strong position financially to meet these challenges. We hope to continue to build our endowed bursary funds during the course of the current fundraising campaign in order to provide income to expand the future bursary and partnership provision.

Summary

The next phase of the renewal programme is now well underway, utilising the remainder of the £50m of long-term debt funding secured, on the rebuilding of St Paul’s Juniors, which is scheduled to be completed during the 2025-26 academic year. This will deliver world-class school facilities for our community for the next 50 years and beyond.

The school does not currently benefit from large endowed bursary funds, but we hope to continue to build on this during the course of the next fundraising campaign in order to provide income to fund future bursaries. It also remains critical that our fundraising continues to be successful and sustainable if we are to be able to support our future bursary and partnership ambitions. This will involve continuing to develop additional income streams through the school’s trading subsidiary company, St Paul’s School Enterprises Limited, including the hiring of the school’s facilities, the sale of merchandise and commercialising the school’s intellectual property.

Annual Income

In 2022-23 school fees accounted for 87.4% of the school’s total income (£41.2m). Fundraising contributed £3.5m (7.4% of total income) following the continued success of the final year of the Shaping Our Future campaign. The school’s investments, including unrealised gains of £0.3m, earned £2.3m (4.9% of total income).

Annual Expenditure

Staff, operating, trading & finance, fundraising costs and depreciation account for 87% of the total annual costs. £0.6m was paid by the school out of income to fund bursaries and other fee remissions, with a further £3.1m being provided from restricted fundraised bursary funds. Retained surpluses will be used to fund future capital expenditure and significant refurbishment of the school estate, together with providing additional bursary and partnership support as required.

Balance Sheet

The school has a strong balance sheet with total reserves of £124.8m at 31 August 2023. £112.9m is represented by capitalised buildings and other assets that cannot be realised. The majority of the school’s restricted and unrestricted bursary funds, together with the annual contributions to the Future Estate Capital Fund are held as investments in equities and funds with Waverton Investment Management Limited and Rathbone Investment Management Limited. Cash not required for the school’s immediate operating and project needs is invested in term deposits and notice accounts.

Legacy Giving

“I was incredibly fortunate to receive a bursary in the 1970s. I am convinced this act of kindness from unknown benefactors gave me opportunities (not always taken) in later life. As a result, I felt compelled to include St Paul’s in my Will. The legacy is earmarked for the Bursary Fund but could just have easily been to support the school’s partnership work with local schools. Please do consider a legacy; there are more boys who are going to need support to grab the opportunities that a Pauline education provided us with.”

(1975-80)

Leaving a lasting legacy

For many, making a gift in their Will represents the most significant donation they will give in their lifetime. Such a gift to St Paul’s leaves a lasting impact for generations to come, enriching the lives of countless future Paulines who would not otherwise be able to afford it, through the invaluable gift of education.

The Colet Society, our legacy giving society, was established in 2019 as a way of expressing gratitude to those who intend to leave a gift in their Will for St Paul’s School. Over time, the society has grown into a community of supportive Old Paulines, former parents, and staff.

Did you know that a gift of just 1% in your Will to St Paul’s will provide a life-changing education to future Paulines through our Founder’s Awards bursaries, while leaving 99% for those closest to you to inherit?

The school is honoured to be remembered by so many in their Will. To date, generous contributions made in this way amount to over £13 million making a significant and lasting contribution to our ability to grow our Founder’s Award bursary programme and partnerships work.

The benefits

Aside from the impact such gifts have on the school, any sum you bequeath to St Paul’s is not only free of tax but may also reduce the overall tax liability on your estate. For more information or to discuss making a gift in your Will in confidence, please contact Kirsty Murdoch, Head of Development and Operations, on 020 8746 5313 or KXM@stpaulsschool.org.uk

A huge thank you

We would like to offer our sincere thanks to all those Old Paulines, current and former parents, staff, friends of St Paul’s, and trusts who have supported our fundraising efforts over the past year by making a gift or informing us of their intention to leave a gift in their Will.

This list recognises all our benefactors who have given to the Shaping Our Future: Next Steps campaign and qualify as members of one of our philanthropic circles. It is correct to 31 July 2024. Please advise us if we have mistakenly omitted your name and if you would like to be included in future lists or if you have a query around your philanthropic circle. We will happily rectify any errors.

We want to thank everybody who has supported Shaping Our Future: Next Steps at every level through our Giving Day, Christmas Appeal and Telethon. To everybody who has given, pledged or is planning a gift or legacy to St Paul’s, including all our donors who have chosen to remain anonymous, thank you.
