Dear Parents/caregivers

We have put this information and product catalogue together with the St Paul’s School Shop for your convenience. The school has had the benefit of more than 30 years experience operating Tihoi Venture School and the accumulative knowledge from successive directors means they know which products work best in the unique Tihoi environment.

In addition, working in the outdoor education sector gives us direct contact with the most up-to-date products, experience and knowledge of their suitability and durability for our Tihoi students. Clothing and equipment needs to be of a good quality to stand the rigours of the Tihoi programme and we have worked with St Paul’s School Shop sharing our knowledge and experience, to offer you a range of products and advice that we know will meet your son’s needs for the time he is at Tihoi.

All of the products in the School Shop have been tested and approved by either myself or my instructors and are highly recommended by us. In the past some parents have purchased products elsewhere that have proven to be unsuitable for Tihoi conditions and consequently parents have had to make a second purchase. We want to prevent this situation whenever possible.

CUSTOMER TESTIMONIALS

It was so easy to make an appointment and have your oneon-one personal shopping experience, while ticking off all things needed on the list provided in this brochure. Hayley Davey

We have had two boys go to Tihoi and have purchased all their clothing and equipment through the St Paul’s School Shop. The shop has a great range, often providing a choice of different brands for each product, all of which have been tried & tested at Tihoi. They take the time to make sure your son gets the right gear choice for his individual needs.

Choosing the correct sleeping bag can be a daunting task and below our Rab supplier, who has over 30 year’s experience with supplying sleeping bags, has provided the information below to help you make an informed decision. It is very important to the shop staff that your son is suited to the right sleeping bag and that the confusion over the EN testing is clarified. The Rab sleeping bag is our most popular seller and we have always received positive feedback on the way it has performed. Tihoi staff also recommend this bag for Tihoi conditions. NO DOWN SLEEPING BAGS AT TIHOI PLEASE.

RAB SOLAR 3 ECO SPECIFICATIONS

CHOOSING THE RIGHT SLEEPING BAG

It is important to understand that a sleeping bag does not warm you up – its job is to retain the heat that your body generates, preventing you from getting cold. In fact, a sleeping bag should be considered an essential piece of life preserving equipment. Ratings describe how well a sleeping bag retains heat when the air exterior to the bag is at a certain temperature.

Because all of our bodies are different, what one person needs for a good night’s sleep is not necessarily the same as the next. This means that it is difficult to quantify exactly how warm a sleeping bag is and as such, any rating should be treated as a guide. At Rab, we use the European EN23537:2016 standard, to rate the majority of our sleeping bags.

EN23537:2016 is an up to date European standard designed to regulate the temperature ratings of sleeping bags across the industry. The test assumes that a ‘standard man’ is 25 years old, 1.73 m tall and 73 kg, while a ‘standard woman’ is 25 years old, 1.60 m tall and 60 kg. The EN23537 rating is determined by using a thermal mannequin to accurately record a series of measurements from the ‘Upper limit’, the temperature at which a person can sleep without perspiring, all the way down to the ‘Extreme limit’, which determines the minimum temperature at which a person can survive. Males tend to sleep warmer so it is safe to say the ratings can be understated.

Lower Limit Rating

The ‘Lower limit’ measurement is the temperature at which the test’s ‘standard male’ can remain asleep for eight hours without waking due to heat loss.

Extreme rating

The extreme rating expresses the absolute limit of a sleeping bag. It should be used to guide how a bag would perform in an emergency situation rather than a recommended use case. It refers to the temperature at which a ‘standard female’ can remain for six hours without risk of death from hypothermia.

Note:

So many variables can come into it as well, health, fitness, are they using a mat underneath, diet, humidity, altitude, shape of the bag, are they using a liner, etc so the ratings should only be used as a guide.

Without testing, a bag manufacturer or supplier can say what they want until someone is called to account. Without the EN23537:2016, they can only use a guestimate!

SHAPE & FIT

Regardless of fill power or fill weight, if a sleeping bag is too big, you will lose heat.

MUMMY - Mummy shaped bags are broad at the top to accommodate your shoulders and narrow slightly towards the feet to prevent gaps and drafts.

HOW TO CHOOSE HIKING BOOTS

The footwear you choose to take you through the country’s mind-blowing landscapes can either make you curse with every step or simply not think about it at all. The latter is what you are looking for. Therefore, choosing a pair of hiking boots that fits your feet and hiking needs for Tihoi conditions, is vital. Most students purchase the Hunters Element boots as this is an all rounder comfortable boot for hiking at a great price point and approved by Tihoi instructors. Tips for choosing the right hiking Boots

- Choose either a mid to high rise ankle support. Mid to high rise is essential for ankle support especially when carrying heavy weights (i.e., your Tramping pack).

- Try hiking boots on at the end of the day when your feet are the most swollen.

- Make sure there is enough space in front of your hiking boot so that your toes are not squished when going downhill.

- Your feet should not slip inside the boot - if they do your feet are more subject to blisters .

- Leather material is super durable and waterproof (absolute essential). Leather materials will protect against the elements: rain, cold, snow you name it.

- Look after your boots. Do not quick dry them but, do brush off debris often. Your boots are likely to need re-waterproofing or nourishing often, as they are leather .

The Right Fit

The most important thing is making sure your boots fit well, so you can avoid blisters and bruised toes. Here are a few boot-fitting tips:

- Make sure they fit well. Your heels should not rise inside the boot as you step, while your toes have room to wiggle. You do not want your toes hitting the front of the boot as you step.

- Try hiking boots on with the socks you are likely to be wearing when you are hiking.

- Once you have purchased boots, do short walks in your new boots or even walk around the house in them. Some experts recommend wearing them for two weeks before the big hike, especially with high-cut hiking boots.

- When trying on the boot and wearing them in, do this toward the end of the day when your feet tend to swell. This is more representative of what you feet will be like when you are hiking.

HELPFUL HINTS TO GET THE MOST OUT OF YOUR GEAR

Clothing and equipment is put through some extreme conditions and cleaning it when you finally get home is usually the last thing you want to do. However a bit of extra love after use can add years to your high-performance gear.

When waterproof/breathable gear is dirty it saturates much faster. This not only reduces the water proofing, but also the breathability properties, as moisture cannot escape past the item. Washing incorrectly can damage the fabric and ruin the waterproofing, so it’s vitally important to take care and get the most out of your product.

Washing Waterproof and Breathable Clothing

It is highly recommended that waterproof, breathable garments should be washed by hand in a bathtub, using cold water and Sport-wash (please refer to paragraph below). Avoid using powder detergents, or any detergents which are scented or have UV brighteners, the incorrect detergent can also melt the glue that holds the seam seal together. Do not dry clean.

Durable Water Repellant (DWR) Coatings

Even when clothing items are not used often, the DWR coating can wear off. This can be noticed when water stops beading off the outer fabric. To reapply the DWR and get the waterproofing back to new, wash it in a Sport-wash or DWR replenish wash. Alternatively, a DWR spray will replenish the water repellency.

Leather Treatment

For increased waterproofing and leather durability on boots, applying a layer of beeswax rub or water repellent spray will increase the water repellency. This stops the leather from soaking up water which keeps your feet dry and maintains breathability as well as staying lightweight. Regular application is recommended (some trusted brands like Fenice, Snoseal and Nikwax) are the best options and available in the School Shop. (Avoid leather conditioner unless waterproofing properties are stated).

Resealing Loose Seam Seal

When the waterproof layers age, are damaged, not stored correctly, or maybe heat damaged, or not washed correctly, the seam seals can begin to peel away. When you begin to notice this occuring, there is a simple fix to stick it back on, using only an iron and some pressing cloth. Avoid using oily materials such as baking paper. Step one: Cover the affected area with the pressing cloth (being very careful not to iron on the actual fabric). Step two: Iron over the seam for several seconds until the seam seal is no longer loose. Alternatively, you can purchase seam grip seam sealant from the School shop.

Sport-wash’s secret

The secret to this product is unlike other detergents designed to leave brighteners, fragrances, and other residue behind, Sport-wash rinses completely. Nothing is left on your clothing to clog the pores of your fabric. Cotton, wool, and synthetic materials are left completely clean. Insulation like down, Thinsulate, and Hollofil fluff up for maximum warmth. And even difficult to clean sportswear materials such as Gore-Tex have their waterproofing and breathability restored. In addition, if you or any members of your family have sensitive skin or are allergic to the residue left behind by commercial detergents, Sport-wash eliminates the rash, redness, and irritation you’ve suffered through with other detergents. No more itchy, irritated skin.

Storage

It might be obvious to avoid leaving your clothing and boots in the back of the car or Ute for weeks on end, but it’s surprisingly common. When exposed to direct sunlight for extended periods of time, colours fade, internal membranes can be damaged, waterproof tape can lift and boot glue can spoil. It is best to store gear in shaded dry places (not hot places such as in an attic or crammed in tight), and regularly check if the items need airing.

Terms and Conditions

Products supplied by the School Shop are covered by a manufacturers warranty that applies to faulty workmanship or product malfunction within one year of the purchase date, with proof of purchase. Product misuse or poor product maintenance is not covered by this warranty. To ensure that the product warranty applies, please read the following carefully.

TRAMPING BOOTS

To ensure that the life of the TRAMPING BOOTS are prolonged, they require the following care:

a. Boots are to be waterproofed with an appropriate leather waterproofing agent e.g. snoseal prior to their use, and regularaly thereafter when used in wet or damp conditions.

b. Boots are to be dried and aired after use, especially when the boots have become wet and damp.

c. Boots are to be laced and tightened appropriately when wearing (see specific instructions in product box).

SLEEPING BAGS

Sleeping bags should be cared for accordingly:

a. Aired and dried properly to protect the material from accumulationg mildew and odours.

b. Stuffed into a cram bag. Do not roll and pack into bag as it can increase moisture build up.

c. Used in conjunction with a sleeping bag liner to prevent general wear and tear

d. Hand-washed or drycleaned according to the cleaning instructions. Sleeping bags are not made to be put into washing machines.

TRAMPING PACK

When caring for your TRAMPING PACK ensure the following:

a. All straps are tightened and excess straps are tied to your pack to avoid them being caught, especially during transportation.

b. A pack liner is inserted into the pack as an additional waterproofing precaution.

While this is by no means a comprehensive list of instructions, it is important to follow the manufacturers recommendations and ensure care is taken with these products in particular. We would expect that these products would last long after your son’s Tihoi experience.

Helpful Hints from over 35 Years of Experience

You may feel very overwhelmed thinking about how and where to start with your son’s Tihoi experience clothing and apparel. Especially with what is required and how to obtain it. Please don’t feel this way, our suggestion is to go through the list in this book and tick off the items you already have, that are suitable. Once you have done this you will be ready to shop.

The shop is here to help you, even if you wish to purchase items for Tihoi elsewhere. However, the advantages of purchasing from the School Shop is that you can be assured that your son’s gear and clothing will be correct. All of our products have been tested and proven by Tihoi instuctors and approved for use. The School Shop keeps up with trends and uses bonafide suppliers who really know their clothing and equipment, and at very competitive pricing. Also, should your son require a change in product or size, we can credit the return to your account.(please refer to the shop’s return policy).

1. It is a good idea to wait until closer to the time to purchase footwear items and the wetsuit.

2. To increase the life and durabiltiy of tramping boots, ensure they are treated with a leather wax such as snoseal ,before they are used. Do Not Use animal based products like animal fats and oils. Snoseal can also be used on your raincoat for additional protection in extreme conditions.

3). To avoid being burdened with a large single expense you may like to purchase over a period of several months. Parents in the past have encouraged family members to purchase items which do not require sizing requirements for Christmas or birthday gifts.

4. To maintain performance of your sleeping bag use Nikwax tech wash and Nikwax TX direct spray on.

5. Apart from the house singlet and rugby shorts no other school uniform is required for your son’s stay at Tihoi. Boys will be issued with a Tihoi shirt when they arrive at Tihoi, but otherwise they are in full mufti. It is recommended that the boys leave their school tracksuit at home as the wear and tear of Tihoi life can be hard on these.

6. Remember that your son will be attending class while at Tihoi. It is advisable that he brings his school bag with him and clothing that is suitable for around the campus and in the classroom. Remember there is no limit on the amount of clothes your son can take to Tihoi.

7. Some parents have made duvet covers out of brightly coloured polar fleece available from local craft shops. Such duvet covers add extra warmth to the bedding in the house.

Polypropylene tops and long johns are invaluable.
