Staying Connected By: Fr. Constantin Ursache My Beloved Family of the Cathedral of Saint Paul, Summer finally sets in, and together with our loved ones we are making plans for a break from our daily jobs and routine. I pray that all of us will use this time to better connect with our families, thus strengthening our relationship with each other, especially with our closest ones. Although we may feel that summer time is for us to “take it easy”, we have to try to make every effort to keep our connection with God and the Church. Wherever you may be spending your summer, please check to see if you can find an Orthodox Church in your area and attend whenever possible. As we do not want God to take a break from us, let’s try not to take a break from His Church either. Since our summer schedule may be a little more relaxed, let us work on maybe saying a prayer every day with our spouses, children, parents, with our families.

Almost all of our educational and social programs here at Saint Paul’s are also taking a break for the summer and will restart in September. I thank all the volunteers who help run these programs and organizations, as it is not an easy task for anyone. All the time, talent, and treasure that our volunteers, including our Parish Council members, offer to our people, is an expression of their love and care for our Church. We are truly blessed with, and grateful for all of them!

We have had a pretty busy time here at our Cathedral since the last edition of the Epistle. Back in March, we celebrated the 57th Anniversary of the tearing icons, with the presence of His Grace Bishop Sevastianos at the evening Paraklesis service. We hosted a Marriage Seminar with a record of over 30 couples in attendance.

We organized and got to learn from great speakers for our Lenten Lectures. We were blessed with the presence of His Eminence Archbishop Demetrios on Palm Sunday, and experienced a beautiful Holy Week and Pascha. At the beginning of June, we hosted our annual festival where our community came together to put on an amazing event, which showcased our faith and heritage to our larger community.

My personal thanks to Fr. Chrysostom Panos who has been so helpful through these past few months and especially through Holy Week. I am grateful also for our devoted Cathedral staff, parish council members, and all of those who helped with all the preparations for our joyous Pascha celebration.

Our Cathedral's Feast day, Saints Peter and Paul, was beautiful. We were honored to have His Eminence Archbishop Demetrios and 15 clergy for the Great Vespers on the 28th of June, and His Grace Bishop Sevastianos and 5 clergy for the Liturgy on the 29th. At the vespers on the eve of our Feast day, His Eminence tonsured as 'readers' 25 of our older altar boys, a number that His Eminence said was a record for him. Our ladies of Saint Anna's Philoptochos hosted receptions on both days and, as always, did an amazing job. Many thanks to all of them for the gracious hospitality they offered to all of us as well as to guests who came to celebrate the feast.

We have recently received the good news of the assignment of Fr. Christopher Constantinides as Proistamenos of our Cathedral. We are grateful to His Eminence Archbishop Demetrios and to His Grace Bishop Andonios for arranging for Fr. Christopher to join the Cathedral of Saint Paul’s family. Fr. Christopher’s official start date is September 1st. We all look forward to Fr. Christopher and Presvytera Angie's arrival in September.

I ask all of you to continue to pray for our Cathedral family, and I wish you all a blessed and beautiful summer!

April 2017: What More Can The Lord Do? By: Deacon Mathew Kakis

Christ is Risen !

The title remarks were posed to us by our illustrious holy father, St. John Chrysostom, as he considered the awesome events of Holy Friday. We are brought to witness the Lord's Passion which include His betrayal, mocking, scourging and eventual crucifixion to death as He foretold to His disciples earlier. Recall St. Peter who tried to argue and even rebuke Jesus to this claim. The Lord called St. Peter “satin” but reminded us all that if we wished to follow Him, that we must deny ourselves, take up our cross as He did and follow Him.

Let us return to the title question. “What more can the Lord do? He created everything seen and unseen. He created mankind in His image and after His likeness. He gave us the law and the Prophets. Then as God, He became fully human to redeem us. He showed us His divinity performing countless miracles by healing the sick and even raising the dead. Finally, He took all our sins upon Himself to the cross, as the spotless lamb, to destroy death and prepare His Eternal Kingdom where there is no pain, sorrow or suffering. Yes, He who is hung on the cross is the One who hung the earth upon the waters! Isn't that enough to blow your mind? He knew all this before He created us and knew our sinful actions. Yet He did all this, even unto dying because His love for us is greater than we can possibly understand. St. Paul reminds us that our continuous sinfulness to this day continues to crucify Him and He continues to forgive us. Do we seek and accept this gift? What more can He do? Truly He is Risen!

From Parish Council President George Vorkas Brothers and Sisters, I hope all of you are enjoying your summer! As your reading this, we are probably just past half way done with the calendar year. The calendar year though is one reflection of time, as in our Parish, we focus on the timing of a ecclesiastical year. It is always interesting to see June as one end to our activities, and September, the beginning of a new year. Some of us do not see each other all summer, as we all say our goodbyes in June, we are greeting each other again in September.

My message isn’t about another calendar, it is about not stopping to work on our ministries and projects just because it is summer. Traditionally, and with most Parish’s throughout the country, summer represents a break. It does not have to be that way. τὰ πάντα ῥεῖ καὶ οὐδὲν μένει.

Have you ever heard that saying? It was said to me by someone early in my career, and its translation simply means “Everything flows, nothing stands still” and was said by the philosopher Heraclitus. I am using it to reinforce that the summer does not have to be the break time we all think it to be. There are many projects and initiatives in our church that must be done and frankly the summer is the best time to do it. Stopping all work for two to three months actually is counter intuitive to making things better.

Before you go off and label me a “slave driver” for asking some of you to pitch in during the summer, let me at least explain that I too was someone who disappeared right after the Festival and magically reappeared on Registration Sunday. There is nothing wrong with that. We all work hard in our professions and in our private lives to give ourselves a better life as we cherish the breaks when we get them. However, remember that things are always moving – flowing, nothing stands still – especially in our Parish. Church does not stop in the summer, church does not stop for anything, it does not stand still.

If your around this summer, come to church. If you can spare a hand, there are many summer projects we are working on. We have established what we call the House Committee “A” Team, in a nod to the famous 70’s show, as a team of individuals who can work on special projects during the year. Grab me or a Parish Council member if you want to help.

Nothing stands still, especially the Cathedral of St. Paul as we have proven time and time again.

I want to take this time and thank everyone who helped make our Festival this year, a great one! We broke records thanks to all of you! Special thanks go to the Festival chairpeople: Carol DePietto, Gus Kratsios, Fran Lutfy and George Marinos.

This September, we have some great plans ahead! Starting with Registration Sunday, our organizations are working hard to develop a schedule that will not only keep us all busy doing the good work around our church, but to enhance our spiritual lives in new and exciting ways. Have you ever looked at our Parish calendar on the website? It is amazing how many times we have multiple meetings and events in the Parish at the same time. It is a testament to all those that volunteer their efforts towards this and to the office staff and caretakers for making it happen.

Since I brought up the website, some of you may have noticed some changes we are making in terms of communication and to how we better catalog images. We have stepped up our communication to the Parish utilizing email and Facebook, and we also continue to use regular mail. We have also setup our new Flickr account to better catalog images. You will see enhancements there as well as we go back through our rich photo archives and start cataloging those as well into the account. Soon, you will be able to visit our Flickr account and see pictures from our entire history! We are improving our ability to let everyone know what is going on weekly through all of our social media improvements. We had also made it easier to handle your Stewardship through our online PayPal portal. Since its inception, a couple of years ago, more and more families are choosing to do it this way and I impress upon on you to give it a try.

You will also notice, because of the hard work of Jim Stephens and Alex Orphanos that our digital bulletin boards are up and running. Alex works to get them updated daily, not only with the day’s schedule, but with up and coming events as well. Stay tuned (literally) as we continue to make our digital footprint even stronger.

While all of the above sounds wonderful, none of it happens without you. If you volunteer, thank you for your continued service. If you want to volunteer, please grab one of us and we will be happy to put you on one of our many project teams. Thank you and God Bless You. So many great things happening in our future!

YOUTH MINISTRY By Alex Orphanos Another Ecclesiastical Year has come and gone and new one arrives just a little more than a month from now.

This year has been a blessing to be part of such a wonderful community, filled with some great memories and making new friends along the way. Undoubtedly, this community has some of the best, if not the best youth programs I have ever been a part of. From Little Angels to GOYA our youth programs do not miss a beat. This, thanks in large part to the wonderful volunteers and leaders that help make it all possible. Our youth are an important part of our community and we must continue to keep that going strong. We are a moving organism, one that grows and changes over time. Our youth come to us as young children and grow up to be young adults that go off to college and go chase their dreams. We are blessed with wonderful young people that offer their time and talents to this community and I am proud to say that I have witnessed how much love and faith our youth have for our church. It is a wonderful thing to witness. We pray that we will see them one day be active members of our community as they grow and make their own families and be a part of this great community that is the Cathedral of Saint Paul.

I want to personally thank all our Youth Advisors/Coaches/Parent Volunteers etc. for dedicating their time and energy to the ministry they were charged. I want to also thank the parents for investing in their children's connection with the church and to all of Saint Paul’s for allowing me to be a part of it all with you. I love our kids and love being able to see the smiles on these young faces when they come to church for their various groups.

I pray that all of you enjoy what is left of summer and I look forward to the new ecclesiastical year as well as the new year of youth ministry. IN MEMORIAM Basil C. Skelos was born in Manhattan on March 21, 1921, the son of immigrant parents who made their way from the province of Epirus in northern Greece. He is survived by his children Dean, Peter, Anastasia, Nicholas and Penelope, 10 grandchildren and 3 great grandchildren. Basil was a child of the Greek Orthodox Cathedral of the Holy Trinity in Manhattan, where he attended Greek Language School and he served in the altar under the tutelage of Archbishop Athenagoras (later Patriarch Athenagoras). It was this special relationship which instilled in Basil an abiding love and devotion to the Holy Orthodox Church, its dogma, history and ritual. Basil was an avid reader; he read and knew -well the works of the ancient Greek philosophers, studied the opera, the great books, history and the lives and works of the great composers. He was always surrounded by the books he read and re-read and he ordered books online until his last days. He spent many hours of his life reading the works and commentaries of his two favorite church fathers: Saint Basil and Saint Paul. At the beginning of World War II, Basil was actively involved in the Greek War Relief raising awareness, money and supplies for the people of Greece. During World War II, Basil served in the U.S. Merchant Service where he learned to cook and bake, both of which became lifelong passions which he passed along to his children. In the Merchant Marine Service, he traveled on many of the oceans of the world from the North Atlantic to the South Pacific. After the war, Basil moved to Rockville Centre where he would spend the remainder of his life. Basil worked in his father-in-law’s pastry shop – George’s. It was during those years that he continued his devotion to the Church. Together with his father-in-law, George Stratigos and many other devoted Greek men, Basil helped found the church that has become the Cathedral of Saint Paul. Basil led the contingent that named the church in favor of Saint Paul. His devotion to the teachings of Saint Paul inspired him to name the official church publication The Epistle. It was during those years that Basil came under the mentorship of Archbishop Michael. Basil often credited the many hours he spent with Archbishop Michael, including their train ride to the Clergy-Laity Conference in St. Louis, as being among the finest educational and spiritual times of his life. Working with the Archbishop, Basil is credited with inviting Father George Papadeas to be the first parish priest. Basil served on the first Parish Council as Secretary and he continued to participate in the growth of the church community for the remainder of his life. Unfortunately, his wife, Ann, died when Dean was a toddler. Saint Anna’s Philoptochos is named in Ann’s memory.

A few years later, Basil was introduced to Helen Stamataky. As their relationship progressed, Basil and Helen dated on a few occasions on the campus of Saint Basil’s Academy where Basil introduced Helen to Archbishop Michael. They were married in the Cathedral of the Holy Trinity in a sacrament presided over by Archbishop Michael. Basil continued his devotion to the Greek community serving as President and Secretary of Chapter #170 of the Order of AHEPA. As the children were growing, Basil sang in the choir. When Nicholas refused to go to Sunday School, Basil started what would grow to more than 40 years of service to the Sunday School. In the 1980s, he was again elected and reelected to the Parish Council. Basil was an Archon of the Ecumenical Patriarchate, the highest honor an Orthodox layman can receive in the Orthodox Church. St. John Chrysostom Oratorical Festival By Carol Kerler The annual parish level St. John Chrysostom Oratorical Festival was held on March 21 at the Cathedral of St. Paul. This nationwide festival provides students an opportunity to learn about and communicate their Orthodox faith by presenting a speech or submitting an essay. Four students delivered speeches before a panel of judges. Two students wrote essays that were judged separately.

In the junior division (speech), Michael Haass analyzed the meaning of our petition for peace at the beginning of the Divine Liturgy. He observed that trust in God is the source of peace in our lives, and cited several verses to illustrate how -- through prayer -- we may receive peace from God. Karis Lynch explained why the Orthodox Church focuses more on the resurrection than on the passion and suffering of Christ. She outlined how Christ’s death upon the cross accomplished salvation for us, noting that the essence of our Christian faith is the joy of resurrection. Stefanie Moratti discussed how acts of kindness and generosity can make a difference in the lives of others with examples of volunteer service.

George Pittas quoted Corinthians to emphasize how the glorious resurrection is the most important event for Christians, and he described how our journey during Holy Week looks forward to the resurrection. He pointed out that icons of the crucifixion seem to represent Jesus holding up the cross, rather than the cross holding up Christ.

In the senior division (essay), Diana Hadjiyane outlined how Orthodox Christians may address the extreme gap between rich and poor in the U.S. and worldwide. She quoted St. John Chrysostom: “Not to share our own wealth with the poor is theft from the poor and deprivation of their means of life; we do not possess our own wealth, but theirs.” In the junior division (essay), Cristian Guerrero summarized how the joyous resurrection is emphasized by the Orthodox Church, as Christ’s suffering freed us from death.

Father Constantin commended the students for their insight and scholarship. In the speech category junior division, Karis Lynch won first place, George Pittas was awarded second place, Michael Haass was awarded third place, and Stefanie Moratti was awarded Honorable Mention.

In the essay category senior division, Diana Hadjiyane won first place. In the essay category junior division, Cristian Guerrero won first place. The first place essays of Diana Hadjiyane and Cristian Guerrero were entered in the Metropolis Oratorical Festival, to be hosted by Kimisis Tis Theotokou Church in Brooklyn on April 29.

Karis Lynch represented the Cathedral of St. Paul at the District Oratorical Festival, hosted by Saint Nicholas Church in West Babylon on April 1. Karis’ speech was awarded third place in the District of Nassau and Suffolk counties.

Grief and Bereavement Support Group April 30th, 2017 By Anna Dounelis Springtime….Christ is Risen and Life Reigns!

There are hints of spring in the air. Some warmer days, more sunshine, flowers beginning to pop out of the soil. Many people are expressing happiness and joy at these signs. Often people are surprised with their reaction to the change of the season when they are going through grief.

For many, the new season can intensify their grief. Any new sign induces memories of activities enjoyed together during this time of the year, brings reminders of life moving on without this person in your life, and thoughts of what your loved one enjoyed about this time of year.

It is important to acknowledge the sadness that comes with these changes. Know that it’s normal for grief to intensify right now. Spring brings about some holidays often overlooked as intensifying grief…Easter, Mother’s Day, Memorial Day, and Father’s Day. Although not as recognized as much as the Christmas season, these holidays are still significant.

You may wish to mark the change in the seasons in a way that would honor your departed loved one. Some find it comforting to hold a special memorial service. Others may choose to plant their loved one’s favorite flowers in their garden or to plan an activity that they once shared. Whatever you choose to do, it may be a mix of sadness and joy, but it can also bring back beautiful memories of happy times together.

Five years ago, Kay Pamas and I had a dwarf weeping cherry tree planted on the Cathedral grounds in memory of our departed loved ones and in celebration of their lives. A few years ago our Lord called Kay home, but each spring when I see that tree bloom it brings me great joy! It is a reminder that we have hope in the Resurrection. Christ is Risen…and Life reigns!

On Wednesday, April 26th, the Grief & Bereavement Support Group held its Annual Spring Memorial Service and Reception. We are very grateful to the clergy, V. Rev. Archimandrite Father Chrysostom Panos, Rev. Father Constantin Ursache, and Rev. Dn. Mathew Kakis for the beautiful prayer service that was held in the Cathedral by the Panagia Shrine. We also appreciate the delicious desserts that were contributed by our members for the reception that followed in the Rev. Father Nicholas Magoulias Cathedral Center.

We especially appreciated the uplifting message that Father Chrysostom, our guest speaker, shared with all of us. His beautiful words touched many hearts that evening.

The Grief & Bereavement Support Group meets on the 2nd and 4th Wednesday evenings of each month at 7:30 PM, and at 2:00 PM on the 3rd Wednesday afternoon, as needed. Everyone is welcome to attend.

Greek Orthodox Cathedral of St. Paul’s 2017 Greek Festival By Carol DePietto, Gus Kratsios, Fran Lutfy and George Marinos The Festival Committee would like to extend a heartfelt THANK YOU to all of you who VOLUNTEERED your time, to all of you who ATTENDED and to all of you who were with us in SPIRIT during our Festival this year.

Simply stated – it was a record year.

Our beloved Cathedral of St. Paul’s 2017 Festival broke several records this year...

The most Revenue for the 4 days of the Festival - OVER $313,000! With total revenue including sponsors and donors to exceed $355,000.

The Single Largest Revenues for Thursday, Friday and Saturday Expenses are still being reconciled and final results pending, however we are predicting we will have NET SURPLUS of approximately $130,000!

Many of your Venues broke individual TOTAL records and ONE DAY records!

The Fourth Annual Celebrity Chef Cook-Off Challenge with Michael Psilakis vs. our challenger, Chris Nicolellis was as fun and exciting as ever. Special thanks to Michael Psilakis for helping to make this event a success. Thank you also to our panel of judges: Nassau County Comptroller, George Maragos, Village of Hempstead Mayor Don Ryan, and Nassau District Court Judge Anthony W. Paradiso and to our MC Kathy Boulukos.

Record Lines...Our Taverna Line intersected with our Souvlaki and Loukoumades lines for most of the evening on Saturday! Our parking Lots were full EVERY NIGHT! Nearly every Shuttle Bus run had a FULL BUS!

In short...we knocked it out of the park!

The Festival Committee is blessed to have such a supportive, enthusiastic and hardworking Volunteer Crew. We all know how important the weather is to ensuring a successful Festival - while Sunday was not great- our numbers were surprising solid!

Our Festival is successful due to the many hours of work and devotion by so many volunteers. While we wish we could name all of you individually, it would take up an entire Epistle! St. Anna’s Philoptochos March– June 2017 By: Callie Papazicos, President The call to action from Philoptochos National President Maria Logos is “Do More Doing”. This challenge is asking us all – not just Philoptochos members – to do more hands-on philanthropy.

Whether you are in a youth group or a senior group or something in between, look around your community and see what needs to be done and try to come up with a plan of action.

I attended the Spring Conference for members of the Direct Archdiocesan District Philoptochos at St. Basil’s Academy. St. Basil’s was started in 1953 by all the Philoptochos chapters in the United States as an orphanage for Greek Orthodox children. Today, the Academy still houses and cares for 21 children from all over the USA that need a place to go. Please keep all these children in your prayers as they try to find their life path. At the conference, we also helped prepare over 30 duffle bags for Project Hope, a program started by the nuns at the All Saints Greek Orthodox Monastery in Calverton, Long Island, NY. On Saturday, April 22nd, we visited St. Mary’s Children’s Hospital along with our Girl Scouts from St. Paul. The girls worked on an art project with over 25 patients at St. Mary’s and even performed a Greek dance as entertainment. Our Philoptochos presented St. Mary’s with our annual donation at the end of an amazing tour of the facility.

At our General Meeting on Tuesday, April 25th, Past President Kathy Boulukos presented over 200 photos that she scanned and put in digital format. It was so much fun seeing the history of St. Anna’s through these pictures. We also warmly welcomed three women who were newly-elected to our Board.

Our Annual Spring Dinner, “Broadway Bound”, was on Thursday, May 18th. We have dedicated the proceeds from this dinner to help meet our $35,000 pledge to St. Michael’s Home, which is to open nearby in Uniondale, Long Island. I am very proud to announce that we are sponsoring a room, which will be named for St. Anna’s, to assist residents battling dementia. We thank everyone who supported us at this event.

On the evening of June 28 and the morning of June 29 our beloved Cathedral celebrated St. Peter and St. Paul. Once again St. Anna’s hosted the evening reception following the service where we were honored with the presence of His Eminence, Archbishop Demetrios Geron of America, as well as 15 visiting clergy. After Liturgy the next morning, which was officiated by His Grace, Bishop Sevastianos, a brunch reception was offered as well. St. Anna’s wishes to thank the Parish Council for helping offset the cost of these events. In addition, we presented Father Constantin our annual donation for our beloved Cathedral.

On a personal note, my time as President of St. Anna’s Philoptochos has come to an end. It has been my honor to represent these amazing women who are on the Board of St. Anna’s. I thank all of them and everyone who has assisted our many philanthropic endeavors and ask that you all continue to do so.

“Philoptochos Annual Spring Dinner” Homebound Ministry By Joan Prieston Do you have a loved one who stays home all day long watching TV or with nothing to do? Why not have them join St. Paul’s Homebound Ministry? This Ministry is dedicated to those who need socialization, meeting new people or just need to “get out.” Its’ members attend a special liturgy, just for them, and it is always followed by a luncheon in the Cathedral Center.

Our recent meeting was held on April 29th. The members and their caregivers attended the Liturgy, received Communion and enjoyed the customary luncheon. Our chef, Lou Patrickakos along with his assistants, prepares a delicious meal, complete with dessert.

The Homebound Ministry has been in existence since 2002. During the past years, the members were entertained by our Goya member Andrea Petrides, who played popular theatre songs as well as Greek songs, much to the pleasure of our members, on his violin; Steven Pagonis played his saxophone; Jonathan Comack showed the movie “My Big Fat Greek Wedding” as part of his Eagle Scout commitment, all this to name but a few.

Our meetings are always held on a Saturday from after Easter through November, avoiding the cold and inclement weather of the winter months.

It is never too late to join the Homebound Ministry. Our next meeting is planned for November, so please consider bringing your loved one to our next event.

AHEPA Constantine Cassis Chapter #170

By Anton Skrivanek, Secretary Due to unforeseen circumstances we had to cancel our scheduled Byzantine Dinner. We hope to do it this coming fall. On May 21st as proclaimed by the Archdiocese, we celebrated. AHEPA Family Sunday. There was an Artoclasia service at each liturgy and we also memorialized the departed of the AHEPA Family. The fellowship hours were supplemented with mini-bagels and fruit. We thank the Daughters of Penelope, Pasithea chapter for their co-sponsorship and the Maids of Athena for serving at the fellowship hours. On June 10th some of our brothers as delegates attended the annual AHEPA District #6 Convention which was held at Holy Trinity Cathedral in Manhattan. A few brothers also attended the entertainment activities the evening before. On June 17th we had our last meeting of the year and held elections for our officers for the coming year.

Our officers will be: President, Anastasios Stampolis; Vice-President, James Ginis; Treasurer, Nicholas Kontoleon; Secretary, Anton Skrivanek. We look forward to our coming year with our regular activities and hope to add some new ones. If anyone is aware of news of one of our brothers - falling asleep in the Lord, illness, etc. please inform one of our officers. If you wish to join the AHEPA, please contact one of our officers. DAUGHTERS OF PENELOPE – PASITHEA CHAPTER #141 By: Marion Panos Well, the Church calendar year is over and summer is upon us. Let me bring you up to speed on what we’ve been doing since the New Year, our end-of-the-year events and our upcoming fall schedule.

In early February, we had our annual “Girl’s Night Out” at the Piccolo Bussola, a wonderful Italian restaurant in Mineola. It was well-attended and some of the sisters brought their husbands (who were most welcome and whose presence added to the festivities). It was great fun, with terrific food, good wine and fabulous company.

In early March, after a short regular meeting, we got together and made blankets which were donated to St. Basil’s Academy.

It was a fun-filled, creative evening enjoyed by all.

Of course, St. Paul’s participated in the Greek Independence Day Parade held in New York City on Sunday, March 26, 2017 and many of Pasithea’s sisters marched with St. Paul’s. Even though it was a cloudy day, the parade was well attended by several Daughters’ and AHEPA chapters.

On April 27, 2017, the Cassis Chapter of AHEPA had their annual Easter Glendi in the Hellenic Room. Many of our sisters attended; it’s always a great time when the Daughters and the AHEPAns share a celebration.

Pasithea hosted its 70th Anniversary Party on Friday, May 5, 2017 at The Carltun on the Park in East Meadow. We were joined at this wonderful event by several Daughters’ Chapters and many of the District 6 Board members, as well as many AHEPAns. It was a beautiful celebration and the theme was the ‘70s. We had a great DJ who played ‘70s music and Greek music as well. There was plenty of food, entertainment and dancing for all and a wonderful time was had. We had a Chinese Auction where many beautiful prizes were won, as well as raffles and 50-50. We awarded Years of Membership pins to many of our Sisters, and Special Merit Awards to two gentlemen. Pasithea's Special Angel Benefactor Award was presented to George Drapan, who has consistently supported us, continuing the memory of his mother and aunt, two of Pasithea's founding Sisters. George Hadjoglou, who always volunteers without being asked, was presented with The Constant Helper Award. A great time was had by all.

On June 18, 2017, several of the sisters took our sister Eleni Pallogudis out for dinner and dancing at the Taverna Laterna to celebrate her relocation to Rochester, New York. We had a wonderful time and gave Eleni a great send-off. We wish you God’s blessings, Eleni, and much happiness in your new “digs.” You will be missed!

Our last meeting was held June 29, 2017 and a new Board was elected. We will send out e-mails listing the members of the new Board in the near future.

Below is the calendar of meetings and events for the Fall of 2017. Please note that our meetings will now be held at 100 Cathedral Avenue (the house next door to the Church) at 8:00 p.m. on the first and third Wednesday of the month.

Sons of Pericles, Lord Byron Chapter #233 By: Niko Vorkas The Sons of Pericles, Lord Byron Chapter #233 were reactivated back in 2015 and as some of you know, we have been active mainly in athletics, but also in supporting other local chapters in their fundraising. We are still a young Chapter and are always looking to add to our ranks, so, if your between the ages of 15 and 28, and are looking to join an organization that not only is built around fundraising and promoting Hellenism, but also around the church, please reach out to me or Alex Orphanos (our Church Youth Director). We initiated a total of 10 new girls this year and have been meeting on a regular basis once a month. We have had some great outings such as our bowling night, pizza party, hibachi night and laser tag. We recently held a bake sale to raise money for our charity, the Melissa Foundation. SCHOOL OF RELIGIOUS EDUCATION BY: Joan Prieston A new addition has been added to our program. The Sunday School Executive Board voted to purchase the “Journey through Holy Week” from the Archdiocese Department of Religious Education as a gift for our Sunday School students. We encouraged our students and their families to become acquainted with this book before the approaching Holy Week so that they could learn and understand the Holy Week’s services. Although this book was a gift to our students, it is available for others who may want to purchase it for their home for a donation of $3.00. If interested please contact Alex Orphanos, Andrea Potaris, or George Lavas.

During Lent our students were very involved in many religious services. The boys served as altar Boys while the girls sang in the Junior Choir under the direction of Virginia Pourakis. Our students, along with many parishioners, followed the clergy procession on the Sunday of Orthodoxy. Also on this day, our students, who have become stewards of St. Paul’s received their Stewardship Pins.

The annual staff and teachers dinner was held on Monday, May 22, 2017 at Jonathans Restaurant. This event is very popular because the attendance, especially the teachers and their graduate assistance are able to enjoy the camaraderie of their fellow teachers, something they cannot due during the school term.

The Sunday school graduation ceremony was held in the Cathedral on June 11, 2017. The twelve graduates received their diplomas and an icon from Father Constantin. The bible passage was read in English by Diana Hadjiyane and in Greek by a past graduate and current teacher Anna Heliotis. The class speaker was Grace Yeostros. A luncheon was held in the Hellenic room for the graduates and their families. As always, many of the graduates will return in September and serve as graduate assistants to our teachers. We congratulate the graduates and wish them good luck in their future endeavors.

On this evening we honored Eleni Pallogudes, a Tuesday Lady of many years and many talents, for her dedicated service.

Eleni and her husband Steve, have decided to move to Rochester, New York to be near their daughter and family. Eleni’s pleasant manor and friendship will be missed by all and we wish her happiness in her new home.

Sunday School Graduation, June 11, 2017 Class Speaker, Grace Yeostros Good Morning Father Constantin, Deacon Mathew, parishioners, and fellow classmates.

Today, we celebrate not the end of our religious education, but the transition from learning in the classroom to expanding our faith elsewhere. In Kindergarten, Ms. Barbara provided weekly coloring pages with segments of the Lord’s Prayer, teaching us the foundation of our faith, the proper behavior of sharing colored pencils, and the achievement of coloring in the lines. She taught us proper ecclesiastical mannerisms- keeping silent during liturgy, guiding us when receiving communion, doing our metanoia, and crossing our arms to our shoulders upon entering the church.

Throughout the years, we have read and discussed the Old Testament and Jesus’ teachings, and how they are included in the service. We also were taught how to use them to guide us in life and to live a life close with God. In later years, we discussed the Seven Sacraments and analyzed specific Gospel readings through open discussion or trivia games. Through this, we have learned the origins, foundation, and principals of our faith.

We arrive at church at 9am every Sunday, excited to learn everything from the first Ecumenical Council to the most recent meeting between Pope Francis and Patriarch Bartholomew. Or we look at pictures of churches from all over the world, and learn about the symbolism of icons, and discuss similarities between icons of different churches and branches within Christianity. Sunday School has also taught us the basics of other religions, and the differences in each and how one split from the other. Learning about the diverse faiths has enabled us to further understand our own.

In years to come, as we advance into college, where the atmosphere consists of diverse opinions and beliefs, we will be questioned about our faith. We could be approached with questions such as “What is your faith?” and “What can God be?” and “How could you believe in a God when we are in a world so horrible?” In Sunday School, we have been well prepared to answer these questions, defending our religion. We learn, in depth, our beliefs established in the Creed, and are capable of explaining our faith in and love for God. Sunday School at St. Paul is different from other churches, as the lessons extend beyond reading the Bible. The lessons aid in fully understanding the bible and gospels, learning about individuals and principals of our faith, and applying our faith into situations- whether it’s maintaining hope in tough circumstances, or offering love and care to those around us.

On behalf of the class, we’d like to thank all of our teachers and parents for providing us with such an amazing program where we learned about our faith and ourselves.

“ΤΙΣ ΔΙΚΕΣ ΜΑΣ ΑΜΑΡΤΙΕΣ ΠΡΕΠΕΙ ΝΑ ΠΡΟΣΕΧΟΥΜΕ ΚΑΙ ΟΧΙ ΤΟΥ ΠΛΗΣΙΟΝ ΜΑΣ”

Μεγάλη και φοβερή είναι αυτή η εντολή του Χριστού. Όλοι μας, αρχίζοντας από μένα, συνεχώς κρίνουμε και κατακρίνουμε ο ένας τον άλλον και γι’ αυτό θα δώσουμε λόγο στη Φοβερά Κρίση του Κυρίου και Θεού μας Ιησού Χριστού. Θα μας κρίνει Αυτός διότι και εμείς κρίνουμε τους άλλους, ψάχνουμε να βρούμε στον πλησίον μας το παραμικρό σφάλμα ενώ τις δικές μας αμαρτίες δεν τις βλέπουμε και ούτε θέλουμε να τις σκεφτόμαστε. Ο άγιος απόστολος Παύλος στην προς Ρωμαίους επιστολή του λέει το εξής: «Διό αναπολόγητος ει, ω άνθρωπε πας ο κρίνων εν ω γαρ κρίνεις τον έτερον, σεαυτόν κατακρίνεις· τα γαρ αυτά πράσσεις ο κρίνων, οίδαμεν δε ότι το κρίμα του Θεού έστι κατά αλήθειαν επί τους τα τοιαύτα πράσσοντας. Λογίζη δε τούτο, ω άνθρωπε ο κρίνων τους τα τοιαύτα πράσσοντας και ποιών αυτά, ότι συ εκφεύξη το κρίμα του Θεού» (Ρωμ. 2, 1-3). Μεγάλη αλήθεια βρίσκεται σ’ αυτά τα λόγια του αποστόλου Παύλου. Δεν προσέχουμε τα δικά μας ελαττώματα και τις αμαρτίες, ενώ στους άλλους βρίσκουμε πολλά σφάλματα. Ψάχνουμε να τα βρούμε και όταν τα βρίσκουμε, πάμε και τα διαλαλούμε σε όλον τον κόσμο. Έγινε πλέον κακή συνήθεια, μόλις μαθαίνουμε κάτι για τον πλησίον μας, να πηγαίνουμε και να το διαλαλούμε παντού. Η γλώσσα μας καίει και σπεύδουμε να πούμε

στους άλλους αυτό που είδαμε και ακούσαμε. Ξεχνάμε ότι αν εμείς κρίνουμε τους άλλους θα μας κρίνει και εμάς ο Θεός. Ξεχνάμε ότι δεν έχουμε κανένα δικαίωμα να κρίνουμε τον πλησίον διότι αυτό δεν είναι δική μας υπόθεση αλλά του Θεού, ο οποίος είναι Υπέρτατος Κριτής, ο οποίος μόνος γνωρίζει την καρδιά του ανθρώπου και μπορεί να αποδώσει δικαία κρίση. Εμείς όμως κατακρίνουμε τον πλησίον και πολλές φορές με πολύ βαριά λόγια. Δεν σκεφτόμαστε ότι ο αδελφός

μας μπορεί να μετανόησε ήδη και να του αφέθηκε η αμαρτία του, επειδή μετανόησε βαθιά. «Ώστε μη προ καιρού τι κρίνετε, έως αν έλθη ο Κύριος, ος και φωτίσει τα κρυπτά του σκότους και φανερώσει τας βουλάς των καρδιών, και τότε ο έπαινος γενήσεται εκάστω από του Θεού» (Α’ Κορ. 4, 5). Εμείς, όμως, πάντοτε βιαζόμαστε να κρίνουμε τους άλλους και δεν περιμένουμε την κρίση του Χριστού. Είμαστε κριτές του πλησίον και όχι του εαυτού μας. Ένας σοφός του Ισραήλ, ο υιός του Σειράχ είπε: «ακήκοας λόγον; συναποθανέτω σου θάρσει, ου μη σε ρήξει» (Σειρ. 19, 10). Πολύ σπουδαία είναι αυτά τα λόγια του. Εμείς ξεχνάμε ποτέ τα σφάλματα του αδελφού μας; Πεθαίνει μαζί μας ο κακός λόγος; Όχι, ποτέ. Εμείς τον διαδίδουμε και μ’ αυτόν τον τρόπο γινόμαστε σαν τις μύγες οι οποίες κυκλοφορούν παντού και παντού μεταδίδουν την μόλυνση. Πρέπει να είμαστε όχι σαν τις μύγες αλλά σαν τις μέλισσες οι οποίες πετάνε από το ένα λουλούδι στο άλλο μαζεύοντας το μέλι. Και εμείς πρέπει να

μαζεύουμε το μέλι δίνοντας σημασία μόνο στο καλό που υπάρχει στον αδελφό μας. Γι’ αυτούς που κακολογούν και κατακρίνουν τον αδελφό τους ο ψαλμωδός και προφήτης Δαβίδ είπε: «τάφος ανεωγμένος ο λάρυγξ αυτών» (Ψαλ. 5, 10). Ανοίξτε έναν τάφο και θα δείτε τι ακαθαρσίες υπάρχουν μέσα του και τι δυσοσμία. Η ίδια δυσοσμία, πνευματική δυσοσμία, βγαίνει από το στόμα μας όταν κατακρίνουμε τον πλησίον. Στον ίδιο ψαλμό που διαβάζεται στην πρώτη Ώρα ο προφήτης λέει: «απολείς πάντας τους λαλούντας

το ψευδός» (Ψαλ. 5, 7). Εμείς όμως διώχνουμε αυτούς που κακολογούν μπροστά μας τον πλησίον; Όχι, δεν τους διώχνουμε αν και έπρεπε να το κάνουμε. Αυτό που πρέπει εμείς να κάνουμε είναι να δαμάσουμε τη γλώσσα μας. Όλοι είμαστε ένοχοι ενώπιον του Θεού

και όλοι έχουμε πολλές αμαρτίες. Τις δικές μας αμαρτίες πρέπει να προσέχουμε και όχι του πλησίον μας. Είπε ο ψαλμωδός: «ου δικαιωθήσεται ενώπιόν σου πας ζων» (Ψαλ. 142, 3). Κανείς δεν είναι δίκαιος ενώπιον του Θεού, όλοι είμαστε ένοχοι. Αυτοί που κατακρίνουν τους άλλους, πολλές φορές, γίνονται και συκοφάντες επειδή τους κατηγορούν για κάτι αβάσιμο.

Ο άγιος Ιωάννης ο Ελεήμονας, Πατριάρχης Αλεξανδρείας, για να διδάξει αυτούς, που τους άρεσε να κατακρίνουν τους άλλους, διηγήθηκε μια φορά την εξής ιστορία. Σε μία πολύ μεγάλη πόλη, στην Τύρο, ζούσε κάποτε ένας μοναχός, ζούσε εκεί και μία πόρνη ονόματι Πορφυρία. Μια μέρα όταν ο μοναχός αυτός περπατούσε στο δρόμο τον πλησίασε η Πορφυρία και του είπε: «πάτερ άγιε, σώσε με όπως και ο Χριστός έσωσε κάποτε μία πόρνη». Ο άγιος εκείνος μοναχός την πήρε από το χέρι και την πήγε έξω από την πόλη. Την οδήγησε σ’ ένα γυναικείο μοναστήρι για να καθαρθεί εκεί η ψυχή της με τα δάκρυα της μετανοίας. Στο δρόμο βρήκαν ένα μωρό που οι γονείς του το είχαν αφήσει και η Πορφυρία το πήρε για να το μεγαλώσει. Όταν αυτό έγινε γνωστό μερικοί άνθρωποι που τους άρεσε πολύ να κατακρίνουν τον πλησίον τους άρχισαν να κακολογούν την Πορφυρία, λέγοντάς της: «Μπράβο, Πορφυρία, ωραίο παιδάκι κάνατε με τον μοναχό». Και τον μοναχό τον περιφρονούσαν και τον κακολογούσαν. Ο μοναχός όμως προσευχόταν αδιαλείπτως και για την Πορφυρία και για τον εαυτό του. Ήρθε η ώρα του να πάει σε άλλο κόσμο και όταν βρισκόταν στην επιθανάτια κλίνη παρακάλεσε να του φέρουν ένα θυμιατό με αναμμένα κάρβουνα. Πήρε τα κάρβουνα και τα έβαλε πάνω στο στήθος του. Η φωτιά δεν άγγιξε ούτε το σώμα του αλλά ούτε ακόμα και τα ρούχα. Τότε είπε ο μοναχός: «Να ξέρετε εσείς που κατακρίνατε την Πορφυρία και εμένα ότι είμαι αθώος. Η σαρκική αμαρτία δεν με έχει αγγίξει όπως δεν με άγγιξε τώρα η φωτιά αυτή». Δεν αρκεί αυτό το παράδειγμα σ’ εκείνους που τους αρέσει να κατακρίνουν τους άλλους. Δε σταματάνε τις κακολογίες τους. Αλλοίμονό τους, όπως κρίνουν αυτοί τον πλησίον τους έτσι θα κριθούν από τον Θεό. Ο δικός μας μεγάλος άγιος, ο άγιος Δημήτριος, μητροπολίτης Ροστόβ, λέει το εξής, όταν αναφέρεται στην κατάκριση: «Μη κοιτάς τις αμαρτίες των άλλων αλλά πρόσεχε τη δική σου κακία. Διότι δεν θα δώσεις λόγο για τους άλλους αλλά μόνο για τον εαυτό σου. Δεν υπάρχει ανάγκη να προσέχεις τους άλλους, πως ζει ο καθένας και ποιές αμαρτίες κάνει. Εσύ πρόσεχε τον εαυτό σου, Ευαρεστείς τον Θεό; Μοιάζει η ζωή σου με την ζωή των αγίων;

Ακολουθείς και εσύ την οδό που ακολούθησαν αυτοί στη ζωή τους; Είναι ευχάριστο μπροστά στον Θεό το έργο σου; Ο άνθρωπος που κατακρίνει τους άλλους μοιάζει με έναν πονηρό καθρέφτη, ο οποίος ενώ αντανακλά τους άλλους, τον εαυτό του δεν τον βλέπει. Μοιάζει επίσης και με ένα ακάθαρτο λουτρό το οποίο τους άλλους τους πλένει ενώ το ίδιο μένει άπλυτο. Το ίδιο και αυτός που κρίνει τους άλλους. Βλέπει τι τρώει, τι πίνει και ποιές αμαρτίες κάνει ο καθένας, τον εαυτό

του όμως δεν τον βλέπει. Στον πλησίον του βλέπει ακόμα και την παραμικρή αμαρτία. Η δική του όμως η αμαρτία, όσο μεγάλη και να είναι, γι’ αυτόν είναι σαν να μην υπάρχει. Θέλει να μην ξέρει κανείς την αμαρτία του και να μην λέει τίποτα γι’ αυτή. Ενώ ο ίδιος τους άλλους τους συκοφαντεί, τους κρίνει και τους κατακρίνει». Δεν είναι δική μας η εικόνα που δίνει ο άγιος Δημήτριος; Ασφαλώς για μας μιλάει εδώ ο άγιος και ιδιαίτερα γι’ αυτούς που η κατάκριση και η συκοφαντία έγινε πλέον η ζωή τους και που βρίσκονται πολύ μακριά απ’ αυτό που λέει ο Ιησούς. Είναι οι άνθρωποι που θέλουν να βγάλουν το σκουπιδάκι από το μάτι του αδελφού τους ενώ οι ίδιοι έχουν στο δικό τους το μάτι ολόκληρο δοκάρι. Να μην τους μοιάζουμε. Να προσέχουμε τον εαυτό μας και να ζητάμε τη βοήθεια του Θεού σ’ αυτό τον δύσκολο αγώνα κατά του πάθους της κατακρίσεως. Να μην κρίνουμε για να μην κριθούμε και εμείς από τον Έναν Μοναδικό και Αιώνιο Κριτή, τον Κύριο μας Ιησού Χριστό, του οποίου η τιμή και το κράτος μετά του Ανάρχου Αυτού Πατρός και του Παναγίου και Ζωοποιού Πνεύματος. Minutes of the Parish Council Meeting of November 17, 2016 Meeting convened at 8:16 pm Parish Council members absent: Chris Katehis, Triphon Kollitides, Michael Lazarakis, Evans Lizardos, Stephen Makrinos, George Vorkas, Louis C. Approval of Minutes: Joan Prieston moved to approve the minutes of the October 20, 2016 Parish Council. George Hadjoglou seconded the motion. The motion carried.

President Vaccari’s Opening Remarks: President Vaccari thanked George Papazicos for his tireless service to the Executive Committee from which he will be retiring after the December 2016 Executive Committee meeting.

President Vaccari thanked Liz Comack and Niko Kontoleon for the presentations regarding Stewardship during Sunday’s Liturgies.

President Vaccari reminded the Parish Council of upcoming events: Stewardship Month special events: November 20 -Ministries Sunday; November 27-Stewardship Commitment Sunday.

Elections: Ballots will be accepted on November 27 and December 4, 2016. He noted that one of the proposed candidates did not meet the qualification requirements to serve and that person’s nomination was withdrawn by the Nominations Committee.

St Anna’s Philoptochos’ Christmas Luncheon at the Westbury Manor on December 8th DAD Philoptochos Agape Luncheon at the Marriott to benefit St. Michael’s Home on December 10th.

The next Parish Council meeting will be held on December 15th; we will have a short meeting followed by a performance by the Cathedral Choir and refreshments.

Correspondence: President Vaccari reported that he received the following correspondence: Thank you note from the Filou family Parish Benefits Authorization received from the Archdiocese. The Authorization was referred to the Treasurer to complete with the Clergy Email from the Greek Orthodox Soccer League requesting the use of our fields for Tournament on May 6-May 7, 2017 and for the 2017 season from September 16 to November 12. John Hajisava moved to permit usage as per the email request. Harry Monioudis seconded the motion. The motion carried.

President Vaccari noted that the Junior Stewardship Program has commenced by the mailing of cards to the families.

Clergy Report: Father Luke discussed The Great and Holy Council that occurred in June in Crete. The last such Council to be held was in 1787.

Autonomy and the Means by Which it is Proclaimed, the Orthodox Diaspora, the Sacrament of Marriage and its Impediments, the Mission of the Orthodox Church in Today’s World and the Ordinance of Fasting were amongst the issues discussed.

Father Luke announced that it is the 25th anniversary of Enthronement of his All-Holiness Bartholomew as Ecumenical Patriarch.

Father Luke advised that he is working on securing the kandelia arms.

Father Luke announced that the new Creed cards have been printed and that GOYA donated $600 for the printing cost for these cards. Father Luke advised that we are currently working on a Community prayer card in Greek and English. He noted that a budget request would be presented to the Parish Council.

Father Luke reminded us that the Nativity 40 day fast has begun. He advised that the GOArch.org website provides information of the foods that can be consumed during the Fast.

Youth Report: Father Constantin advised that the JOY was holding a children’s coat drive.

Father Constantin advised that DAD Parathosi 2017 would be held at Queens College on February 11 th and that our Cathedral will participate with one dance group.

Father Constantin reminded us that the GOYA Breakfast with Santa would be held on December 11 th and he urged that the Parish Council support this event.

Father Constantin requested that a Scorer’s table for games be purchased. The table, which is 8 ft. long, comes with safety pads and noted that the table is foldable for storage. Spyro Georgopalis moved to purchase the table at a cost not to exceed $1,200. John Hajisava seconded the motion. The motion carried.

Social Media Report: Alex Orphanos wants to create a public Facebook page for the Cathedral. He would post on behalf of the organizations. Alex would work with the Technology Committee and Clergy to administer the page and he will report back to the PC about this improvement.

It was announced that Alex recently became engaged to Patricia Gounardes. President Vaccari wished him and his fiancée many

Financial Report: On behalf of the Financial Secretaries, George Marinos presented the report. George Zakos moved to approve payment of the invoices reflected therein. Carol DePietto seconded the motion. The motion carried.

Roof Report: George Vasilakis reported that roof repairs commenced 2 ½ to 3 weeks ago. Upon removal of tiles, it appears that the water membrane and screws were greatly deteriorated.

Melone Architects noticed a leak coming from our bell tower. Repair of the leak may present us with additional costs. The House Committee will report on cost and issue of accessibility to perform repairs at an upcoming meeting.

House Committee: Tony Pantelides reported that he would be pricing repairs of the 100 Cathedral Avenue front steps and repairs to the driveway.

Tony Pantelides also reported that the Committee would also be working on retrofitting the foyer as a meeting and AV room.

Tony Pantelides also reported that he has created a detailed hourly schedule for Larry and Isaac to follow regarding their work.

The schedule will go into effect on November 21st. The cleaning company will be retained to work one day a week .

John Papachristos reported on the repair of the bronze Cathedral doors. He outlined that the doors do no properly shut and that the repair is complex. The restoration company that refinished the doors recommended a company to repair the closing mechanism on the doors. Upon their inspection, it was determined that the doors must be retrofitted with Rixon Hinges at a cost of $8,600. This will include new door saddles and cement. John Papachristos moved to approve the repair, and Dean Mavrovitis seconded the motion. The motion carried.

Church Committee: George Lavas reported that the Committee met on November 8th and discussed a full agenda of items.

George Lavas reported that one additional Parish Council member would be added to Second Liturgy service. The PC members assigned would supervise organizations serving during Fellowship Hour and would assist, if needed.

George Lavas reminded us that PC members serving Second Liturgy must be present by 10:30 am and that PC members serving during First Liturgy should await the arrival of those serving during Second Liturgy.

George Lavas discussed the management of side aisles during Liturgies by the Parish Council.

Sunday School Report: George Lavas reminded us that the Sunday School Christmas Boutique would take place this Sunday and asked the Parish Council

to support the Sunday School’s efforts.

Nursery School Report: George Hadjoglou identified two issues that were considered by the Committee.

The Nursery School will be reinstating its Summer Program that will take place from July 5 to July 27, 2016 on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday for 2.5 hours. Tuition would be as follows: $225 (stewards), $260 (non-stewards), $10 registration fee, $15 insurance fee. 50% of tuition would be due with registration.

Registration for Fall, 2017 will begin in mid-December. George Hadjoglou advised that the Committee is recommending and he moved to establish the cost of the extension program be as follows: 3 years old $1,600 for stewards, 4 year old program $2000 for stewards. For both Programs, there would be a $500 surcharge for non-stewards. This represents a price reduction. Joan Prieston seconded the motion. The motion carried with one vote in opposition.

Cemetery Plot Report: Harry Raptakis reported that twenty years ago, the Cathedral purchased plots at Pinelawn Cemetery. The plots originally did n ot have a sprinkler system. Such a system was recently installed. Concrete liners for the plots cost $500. Adjacent plots with concrete liners are priced at $5,500. Current charge for a plot is $3,000 for stewards and $3,300 for non-stewards. Given the improvement to our area, Harry Raptakis moved to increase the price to $4,500 for stewards effective March 1, 2017. Michael Gurlides seconded the motion. The motion carried.

Old Business: President Vaccari reported that as result of the letter campaign, the Cathedral has collectively raised $10,251 for St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church and Shrine.

George Zakos suggested that we should pass a second tray for the benefit of the St. Nicholas Building Project. It was determined that the calendar should be consulted to determine the busiest time of year to optimize this effort.

The Pan Cypriot Choir will perform at the Cathedral on December 17 th and that LIACA would host a reception. Hierarchy and dignitaries would be present at this event. John Hajisava moved to approve event and waiver of fees for this event. George Lavas seconded the motion. The motion carried.

Gus Kratsios reported that the Festival would take place June 1 through June 4, 2017.

James Georgakis moved to adjourn the meeting at 10:41pm. Carol DePietto seconded the motion. The motion carried.

President Vaccari thanked the Clergy and the Pastoral Assistant, the Cathedral staff, the Parish Council, the Executive Committee and the ministry and organization leaders and members for their tireless work for the Cathedral and for supporting him throughout his presidency.

President Vaccari thanked his wife, Cathy, for her support, work and sacrifices during his presidency.

President Vaccari also wished George P. Possas a Happy 90th birthday.

President Vaccari thanked Daughters of Penelope Pasithea Chapter for decorating the Hellenic Room for Christmas. He thanked the Markos family for their donation, once again, of the Cathedral Christmas tree as well as Presvytera Marusia, Marina Heliotis, Anna Pinou, the Boy Scouts and their entire team for decorating the tree.

President Vaccari advised of the upcoming events:

Pancyprian Choir Concert on December 17, 2016. President Vaccari emphasized that Parish Council support and attendance is needed. He noted that PC members should arrive no later than 6:30 pm to assist visitors.

The Sunday School and Greek Language Program will hold their Christmas program on December 18, 2016 and Nativity Pageant Presentation on Christmas Eve. A Special meeting of the Parish Council to elect officers for 2017 is scheduled for December 29, 2016.

The New Year’s Eve party will be held at Jonathan’s Restaurant

The Vasilopita Dance is on January 8, 2017. Fran Lutfy will report further.

The ministry and organization Vasilopita cutting will take place in the Cathedral on January 15, 2017, as will be the administration of the Oath of Office for the members of the Parish Council.

Father Luke reminded the Parish Council and guests of upcoming services and events, including the Friday night Great Hours at 9:00 am on Friday, December 23; the Divine Liturgy on the Eve of the Nativity of Christ on December 24 commencing with Orthros at 9:00 am; on December 24, Orthros at 7:00 pm and Divine Liturgy to follow with Sunday and Greek School Presentation and hymns by our Choir starting at 8:00 and Orthros and Divine Liturgy commencing at 7:45 am on Christmas Day. Father Luke reminded the Parish Council and guests that there would be one liturgy for the next three Sundays.

Youth Report: Father Constantin thanked Father Luke, President Vaccari, the Parish Council and ministries and organizations of the Cathedral for their support of our Youth groups.

Father Constantin advised that the HOPE/JOY Christmas celebration took place on December 9 and that 38 GOYANs went into the City to visit the tree at Rockefeller Center.

Father Constantin reminded us that the Breakfast with Santa was held by the GOYA on Sunday, December 11, 2016.

Father Constantin thanked the Youth advisors for all their hard work on behalf of the Youth and Cathedral.

Vasilopita Dance Committee: Fran Lutfy moved to change the pricing structure from the original approved by the Parish Council as follows: Adults (under 72): $90; Seniors (72 or over): $70; Kids with adult meals: $45; Kids meals (2 and up): $35; Kids under 2 years old: Free. Bill Kallinikos seconded the motion. The motion carried.

She encouraged people to attend this wonderful event.

Planning Committee: George Vorkas reported on the progress made relative to the Building Project. He reported that the Feasibility Study report was completed and that Architectural renderings consistent with our financial position, as determined by the Feasibility Study, have been completed. Soil boring tests required were also completed. George Vorkas reported that the results of the Study and the plan will eventually be presented to the community in a Town Hall setting. The Parish Council and then General Assembly would then need to approve moving forward with the Building Project. Currently, the subcommittee infrastructure was being formed, and the subcommittees will meet in furtherance of project.

Sunday School: George K. Lavas thanked the Tuesday Ladies for their flexibility in relocating to 100 Cathedral Ave. so that we could add the much needed extra Nursery School classroom .

He reiterated that the Greek and Sunday Schools will hold a joint Christmas program, as previously reported by President Vaccari.

Nursery School: George Hadjoglou reported that applications were mailed out for the next year to returning students and stewards.

Old Business: President Vaccari reported that an appeal was sent to the community for donations toward the St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church and Shrine. Thus far, he reports that through prior donations and the appeal, $13,121 was been collected which has been remitted.

Any future sums received will be remitted upon receipt.

New Business: Athena Kallinikos presented a check in the amount of $1,150 on behalf of the 71 “GOYAns Gone Grey� that held a reunion at the Cathedral.

On behalf of the Laconian Association, Lou Vlogianitis presented a check of $2,000. He thanked the Clergy and Parish Council for their support of the Laconian Association.

On behalf of the Daughters of Penelope, Pasithea Chapter, Joanne Pappas presented a check for $1,000. She thanked the Clergy, President Vaccari and the Parish Council for their support of the Chapter.

On behalf of the LIACA, Soteroulla Constantinou presented a check to benefit the Cathedral Building Fund in the amount of $4,000.00.

The Parish Council and invited guests were treated to a beautiful selection of Christmas Carols by the Cathedral of St. Paul Choir.

President Vaccari thanked Adrienne Borbely and the entire Choir for their dedication to our Cathedral and for offering their traditional Christmas Carol mini-concert.

The Parish Council and invited guests then joined in refreshments and fellowship to celebrate the Christmas season.

Parish Council Members Absent: Harry Demiris, Bob Donus, Spyro Georgopalis, Chris Katehis, Nikolaos Kontoleon, Harry Monioudis, Michael Lazarakis, Anthony Pantelidis, John Papachristos, James Rigano, George Vasilakis, George Zakos Past Presidents Absent: Andrew Andron, Antonia Kourepinos, William Pappas, George P. Possas, George C. Possas, Peter Xanthos Father Luke called the meeting to order at 8:04PM. Father Luke and Father Constantin led all those in attendance in an opening prayer. Father Luke then administered the oath of office to all Parish Council members in attendance.

Harry Raptakis made a motion that we set aside regular business and proceed with the election of officers of the Parish Council for the year 2017. George Papazicos seconded the motion. Motion carried.

Harry Raptakis made a motion to nominate Michael Gurlides to preside over the election of the officers of the Parish Council;

James Ginis seconded the motion. Michael Gurlides accepted. There were no other nominations. George Lavas made a motion to close nominations, which was seconded by George Papazicos. Motion carried.

Michael Gurlides appointed Fran Lutfy as Secretary for the elections.

NOMINATIONS AND ELECTIONS OF THE OFFICERS OF THE PARISH COUNCIL

Nominations were then opened for officers of the Parish Council for 2017.

Anthony Vaccari nominated George Vorkas for the office of President of the Parish Council and George K. Lavas seconded the motion. George Vorkas accepted the nomination. There were no other nominations, and nominations were closed. Harry Raptakis moved to direct the Secretary to cast one ballot for the unanimous election of George Vorkas. William Kallinikos seconded the motion. Motion carried.

George Papazicos nominated George Marinos for the office of Vice President of the Parish Council, and William Lembo seconded the motion. George Marinos accepted the nomination. There were no other nominations, and nominations were closed. James Ginis moved to direct the Secretary to cast one ballot for the unanimous election of George Marinos to the office of Vice President of the Parish Council. Harry Raptakis seconded the motion. The motion carried.

Harry Raptakis nominated Fran Lutfy for the office of Secretary of the Parish Council, and Joan Prieston seconded the motion.

Fran Lutfy accepted the nomination. There were no other nominations, and nominations were closed. George Hadjoglou moved to direct the Secretary to cast one ballot for the unanimous election of Fran Lutfy to the office of Secretary of the Parish Council. Gus Kratsios seconded the motion. Motion carried.

George Vorkas nominated Stephen Makrinos for the office of Treasurer of the Parish Council. George Marinos seconded the motion. Stephen Makrinos accepted the nomination. There were no other nominations, and nominations were closed. Thomas Flouskakos moved to direct the Secretary to cast one ballot for the unanimous election of Stephen Makrinos to the office of Treasurer of the Parish Council. Motion carried.

James Georgakis nominated James Ginis for the office of Financial Secretary of the Parish Council. William Lembo seconded the motion. James Ginis accepted the nomination. Elizabeth Christakos-Comack nominated George Vasilakis for the office of Financial Secretary of the Parish Council. George Vorkas seconded the motion. Stephen Makrinos communicated George Vasilakis’ acceptance of the nomination in his absence. There were no other nominations, and nominations were closed. Carol DePietto moved to direct the Secretary to cast one ballot for the unanimous election of James Ginis and George Vasilakis to the offices of Financial Secretary of the Parish Council. Harry Raptakis seconded the motion. Motion carried.

Having no other open business, elections were closed.

PRESIDENT’S OPENING REMARKS: The newly elected officers of the Parish Council took their positions, with President George Vorkas presiding over the remainder of the meeting. President Vorkas appointed Harry Raptakis, Esq. to act as Legal Counsel to the Parish Council for 2017.

President Vorkas thanked his wife and all our spouses for the work and sacrifices that they make so that we can serve the Cathedral.

President Vorkas thanked Father Luke and Father Constantin for their exceptional service to the Cathedral. He expressed that he looks forward to working with both during the upcoming year.

President Vorkas thanked outgoing President Anthony Vaccari for his steady leadership and for teaching him so much during his tenure. He thanked James Ginis and George Vasilakis for accepting the Executive Committee positions, and he thanked George Marinos, Fran Lutfy, and Stephen Makrinos, for their work and acceptance of their Executive Committee positions.

President Vorkas thanked William Lembo and James Georgakis for their continued work on the Executive Committee and all the past presidents for their hard work and support.

President Vorkas thanked George Papazicos for his years of service on the Executive Committee. He expressed that we would miss his very insightful contributions to the discussion during our Executive Committee meetings but looked forward to his continued work on the Parish Council.

President Vorkas thanked Elizabeth Comack for her service to the Executive Committee as Financial Secretary and whose resignation he reluctantly accepted.

President Vorkas thanked James Stephens for his outstanding contributions to the Parish Council as his term expired in 2016.

He welcomed new members to our Parish Council, Anastasios Stampolis and Billy Demas.

President Vorkas thanked outgoing President Anthony Vaccari for his steady leadership and for teaching him so much during his tenure. He thanked Antonia Kourepinos who initially brought him onto the Parish Council. He thanked George Papazicos who initially brought him onto the Executive Committee for his mentorship. He also thanked Lou Patrickakos, Spyro Georgopalis and Anthony Pantelidis for their support, guidance and friendship.

President Vorkas thanked the late Barbara Filou for setting an example of humbleness and spirituality for him and all of us.

President Vorkas expressed his condolences to John Papachristos for the loss of his mother and Harry Raptakis for the loss of his mother in law.

The President asked each member of the Parish Council to sign and return the Oath forms and the Conflict Statement to the Secretary.

President Vorkas reminded all Parish Council members that they must submit their 2017 Commitment cards and complete their 2016 commitments prior to February 15, 2017.

President Vorkas advised that by letter, Bishop Andonios confirmed the validity of our recent Parish Council election.

President Vorkas wished a Happy Name Day to all those celebrating in the month of December and January, including Basils, Johns, Joan, Anthony's, Antonia, Stephen, Nicholas and Fran.

He noted that the upcoming meeting of the Parish Council would take place on January 26, 2017.

Priorities and Expectations of this Parish Council President Vorkas outlined his priorities for 2017. He emphasized that the Church itself, its preservation, maintenance and improvement is a top priority. We would continue to preserve and maintain it properly through projects, like the Roof project. He stated that we would repair the bronze doors and address HVAC issues within the Cathedral.

President Vorkas emphasized that increasing Stewardship is also a top priority and a necessity.

President Vorkas emphasized that to work effectively and for the greatest benefit to our community, the Parish Council must continue to put aside any differences that we may have and work together.

Clergy Report: Father Luke congratulated our new President as well as the incoming and outgoing members of the Executive Committee and Parish Council. He thanked all for their hard work and dedication. Father Luke expressed his thanks to Father Constantin as well as Pastoral Assistant, Alex Orphanos and the Cathedral staff.

Seminary Trust Fund: George Papazicos moved to appoint to the Seminary Trust Fund, Andy Andron, Constantine Zografos and Michael Gurlidis. James Georgakis seconded the motion. The motion carried.

Roof Project: Stephen Makrinos reported that the roof will be completed in one or two weeks.

Planning Committee: President Vorkas reported that the Planning Committee would likely meet in late January. Spyro Georgopalis has agreed to act as a co-chair, and the assignments to this Committee would be announced.

Legal: Harry Raptakis reported that the forms required to maintain property tax exemptions are due in early January. To keep our tax exemption on 2 Kensington, we must provide a job/title description for Alex Orphanos. That position is as Facility caretaker as well as Pastoral Assistant. Harry Raptakis moved for the nunc pro tunc formal assignment of Alex Orphanos as the Facility Caretaker/Pastoral Assistant of the Cathedral. Michael Gurlidis seconded the motion. The motion carried.

Recognition Committee: George K. Lavas moved for approval of payment of a deposit of $500 to the North Ritz Club, the venue for our Golden Leaves Ball to be held on November 5, 2017. He thanked Olga Georgakis and April Mavrovitis for spearheading the search for venue and their work on this event.

Church Committee: George K. Lavas reminded us that help was needed in during the three important upcoming holidays commencing on January 5. He asked that Parish Council to be present. He noted that weekend duty rosters now include Saturday morning liturgies/services.

New Business: Tony Vaccari reported that 22 Chelsea which is on the southeast corner of our parking lot is in short sale or foreclosure. President Vorkas advised that he was setting up a Sub-Committee was assigned to investigate the purchase.

Old Business: George Hadjoglou pointed out that festival equipment was used by an organization during a recent event. He noted that such usage

must be approved by the Parish Council in the future.

President Vorkas noted that the APPO committee must review our rental contract to address issues regarding use of equipment and entertainment. It was brought to his attention that a number of chairs used in the Hellenic Room were put out for disposal. That action was reversed and the issue would be revisited.

There being no other business, James Georgakis moved to adjourn the meeting at 8;56pm . Carol DePietto seconded the motion.

George Papazicos moved to approve the minutes of the Special Parish Council meeting on January 11, 2017. Dean Mavrovitis seconded the motion. The motion carried.

Opening Statement: President Vorkas thanked all the Anthony's, Johns/Joan, Bills, Chris, Nicholas, Fran for the name day feast prepared this evening and wished them all a Blessed Name Day. President Vorkas wished Father Constantin a Happy Second Anniversary with our Cathedral as of January 25 th . He thanked him for his exemplary service.

President Vorkas reminded all Parish Council members to fulfill at this time their 2016 stewardship commitment and to submit their pledge for 2017.

President Vorkas disseminated Committee rosters. He requested that all comments regarding assignments be directed to him.

President Vorkas thanked everyone for their support during the last few very difficult weeks President Vorkas wished Joan Prieston a speedy recovery.

President Vorkas reminded all Parish Council members to remit their executed Oath of Office and Conflict Disclosure Statements to Secretary, Fran Lutfy.

President Vorkas informed the Parish Council that he has been attending meeting of the ministries and organizations to answer questions concerning Father Luke’s removal as per the Bishop’s letter to our community.

Upcoming Events: President Vorkas announced the following events: GOYA Midnight run: January 27, 2017 The Blood Drive: February 7, 2017. President Vorkas thanked Erika Palmer and George Papazicos for adjusting the date to accommodate the Apokreatiko Glendi and for spearheading the Drive once again.

Apokreatiko Glendi: February 12, 2017. President Vorkas emphasized the importance of Parish Council support of this event.

The next Parish Council meeting will take place on February 16th.

Correspondence:

President Vorkas advised that he received a letter from the Archdiocese confirming and ratifying the results of our recent Parish Council election of George Zakos, John Hajisava, Fran Lutfy, George Hadjoglou, John Papachristos, Anastasios Stampolis, Thomas Flouskakos, George Vasilakis, Billy Demas, and Harry Demiris. President Vorkas congratulated the newly elected members of the Parish Council.

President Vorkas announced that the letter received from His Grace, Bishop Andonios, about Father Luke’s removal was forwarded to our community.

President Vorkas received a thank you note from the Possas family for the flowers sent in memory of Evelyn Possas.

President Vorkas received a thank you note from Hermea Drivas and Deacon Mathew for the Christmas gift given to them by the Cathedral.

Clergy Report: Father Constantin reported that the Very Reverend Archimandrite Chrysostom Panos will be assisting with Services & Liturgies for future Sundays. He is also available to assist during the week as needed.

Father Constantin advised that we received the Proskinitario ordered from Alpha Omega for our children.

Father Constantin noted that for the IOCC Superbowl Sunday, February 5, 2017 we normally pass a second tray. Lou Yeostros moved to approve a passing of this tray. Triphon Kollitides seconded the motion. The motion carried.

Deacon Mathew advised that Bishop Andonios sent out a note to all the Clergy regarding a Pre-Lenten retreat on February 7 and 8, 2017 in Huntington at Immaculate Conception Seminary. Deacon Mathew and Father Constantin indicated to the Bishop that they would attend. Father Constantin advised that currently, there is nothing on the calendar for those two dates.

Father Constantin noted that for the Lenten Wednesday evenings Pre-Sanctified Liturgy speakers, we approved $150 in the past for honorariums to visiting speakers. Father Constantin reported that a maximum of six speakers. William Lembo moved to approve payment of these honorariums this year. Spyro Georgopalis seconded the motion. Motion carried.

Youth Report: Father Constantin reported that the Basketball camp has made a request to use our facilities for June 26, June 27 from 10 am to 4 pm, June 28 9am-3pm, June 30 10-4pm and the following week from 10-4pm. Triphon moved to approve the request. James Rigano seconded the motion. In discussion a request was made that we determine whether donations pledged by the Educational Foundation have been paid. The motion carried.

Father Constantin informed that the Cathedral Cup will be held on March 4, 2017. We will be hosting the seven surrounding Churches in our area.

Father Constantin addressed the Parish Council about the personal difficulties that we have all suffered related to Father Luke. He noted that this event should reignite in all of us self-examination of our own private struggles and our commitment to address any of those issues that may exist. The development should be an opportunity to strength our faith.

Lou Patrickakos expressed that as a Parish Council we will support Father Constantin.

Treasurer Report and Financial Report: President Vorkas noted that given the issues with our computer server, the reports could not be generated and will be given at our next Parish Council meeting. He noted that ACT with the assistance of James Stephens are in the process of recovering our data, and our computers should be functional shortly.

George Papazicos moved that any invoices of a recurring nature are approved for payment. Michael Gurlides seconded the motion.

The motion carried.

William Lembo requested that once the server is working that the invoices needing approval be circulated to the Parish Council via email for approval.

Reservations: George Marinos reported that there are reservations requests for the Hellenic Room on April 30, 2017 and May 6, 2017 for an Eagle Scout Code of Honor service and reception. Lou Yeostros moved to waive the room usage fee for both ceremonies. Dean Mavrovitis seconded the motion. The motion carried with one abstention.

Nursery School: George Hadjoglou set forth that a teaching position needed to be filled. The candidate that the Committee recommends for hiring is Athena Kanterakis. He moved to approve the hire. Harry Monioudis seconded the motion. The motion carried.

House Committee: John Papachristos provided an update on the repair of the exterior bronze doors to the Cathedral. He noted that the doors were installed today and appear to work well. There are some additional charges due to needed repairs that became apparent when the doors were removed. In particular the doors are constructed of metal encased in bronze. When removing the two doors, the left sided door showed extensive deterioration or rusting of the inner metal of that door, rendering the attachment of a new hinge impossible. The repair consisted of peeling back the bronze and reconstructing the metal so that the hinge could be attached. The cost was $1,200. He also noted that in the process of repair, the passive interior door handle was accidentally damaged, which is in the process of repair. The company will also install doorstops on the left side door so that the doors can be kept open during funerals. Lastly, the company will give us a quote to repair the double interior doors of the Cathedral. John Papachristos moved to approve the additional charge of $1,200. Spyro Georgopalis seconded. The motion carried. The balance currently due to the company is $4,750 with the additional approved charge.

George Vasilakis reported that the repair on the tile roof over the Cathedral is completed. A final walk-through will take place on Tuesday morning with our architect, contractor and the consultant. At that walk-through, certain change orders will be finalized and an inspection to insure that the repairs completed were done properly.

George Vasilakis noted that Neptune repaired the leak at the joinder point between the Rev. Nicholas J. Magoulias Cathedral Center and the administration building. He noted that we have another leak over the flat roof over the small chapel for which he will get a repair quote from Neptune on Tuesday.

President Vorkas and Anthony Vaccari recognized the exemplary work done by George Vasilakis in completing this repair, which is the largest capital project that we undertook since Project Renaissance.

Scouting Report: Lou Yeostros reminded the Parish Council that February 5, 2017 is Scout Sunday. He noted that there would be a ceremony in the Cathedral involving the Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts, and Cub Scouts. Religious Awards will be awarded. Lou noted that Father Constantin, Alex Orphanos and Steve Pontickio are working with the Boy Scouts to develop activities to earn the metals. After the Cathedral ceremony, Lou noted that there would be a luncheon in the Hellenic Room at which there will be a ceremony for the five Cub Scouts crossing over to Boy Scouts. He noted that all Scout groups are meeting to coordinate activities.

President Vorkas congratulated Billy Demas on his son becoming an Eagle Scout Parade Report: Lou Yeostros reported that the Greek Independence Parade is scheduled for March 26, 2017. A Committee meeting will be scheduled to discuss details. He noted that a reservation for three buses has been made at the same price as last year or $895.00 per bus through Munsey Tours. Lou Yeostros moved to allow his Committee to pay $450 to reserve the buses. Tony Vaccari seconded the motion. The motion carried.

Gala Sweepstakes Report: Harry Demiris reported that the Committee has met and that there are only minor changes from last year. The pricing, number of tickets and method of distribution of the raffle tickets will remain the same. He noted that the Committee is looking to modernize some of the gifts, and it has enlisted some young adults to assist. He encouraged us to contact him regarding raffle prize suggestions.

Planning Committee: Spyro Georgopalis noted that he has met with the President and certain members of the community to determine our next steps in light of recent developments. The new chairs of the Committee are John Papachristos, George Michelis and himself.

Blood Drive: George Papazicos reported that the Blood Drive is Tuesday, February 7, 2017 from 3pm to 9pm. He noted that this is a difficult time of the year with increasing need and diminished supply. He urged us all to give. He advised that one should consult the flyer disseminated to determine qualifying conditions to give blood.

Festival Report: Fran Lutfy introduced her co-chairpeople for Festival 2017: George Marinos, Carol DePietto and Gus Kratsios. Fran Lutfy moved for a budget of $15,000 to pay for preliminary costs. George Zakos seconded the motion. The motion carried.

Apokreatiko Glendi: President Vorkas reported that chairmen, Niko Kontoleon, and his team are preparing for the Glendi. He noted that there will be great raffle prizes this year due to raffle donations earmarked for the Vasilopita Dance being transferred to the Glendi with permission from the each donor.

Golden Leaves Report: The Golden Leaves Ball will be held Sunday, November 5, 2017 at the North Ritz Club.

Old Business: George Zakos noted that we had previously approved the passing of a second tray to benefit our Roof Project once a month.

President Vorkas stated that we would enforce this motion and work with Clergy to implement.

New Business: Peter Menoudakos reported that 22 Chelsea, which is in foreclosure was up for sale. This is the property that is on the southwest corner of our parking lot exit onto Chelsea. A small committee, consisting of Peter, Steve Makrinos and John Papachristos, was formed at the Special Parish Council meeting. The subcommittee immediately attempted to reach out to the brokers, who were difficult to reach. In the process of making inquiries, it was determined that the house is already in contract. We have communicated our interest in the property in the event that the sale does not go through.

Opening remarks: President Vorkas thanked the Harrys and Triphons on the feast that they hosted tonight in celebration of their name days. He wished them Chronia Polla.

President Vorkas thanked the Parish Council for their patience in the delay of our meeting time to accommodate the Girl Scout event tonight.

President Vorkas thanked those who attended and helped organize the Aprokreatiko Glendi.

On behalf of the Parish Council, President Vorkas expressed his condolences to Michael Gurlides and his family on Dee Gurlides’ passing. May her memory be eternal.

President Vorkas also expressed condolences to Harry and Theresa Monioudis on the passing of Theresa’s mother. Harry thanked everyone for their prayers and the flowers received.

President Vorkas reminded the Parish Council to remit their Oath of Office and Conflict Statement forms to the Secretary, Fran Lutfy.

Liz Comack reported that the Stewardship Committee would meet on February 28 at 8:00 pm.

Clergy Report: Father Constantin advised that His Grace Bishop Sevastianos of Zela will be joining our Cathedral on March 15 for the celebration of the 57th Anniversary of the Tearing Icons.

Father Constantin advised that a Holy Unction Service on Clean Monday will take place on February 27 at 10:00 am. On that date, several clergymen from surrounding Churches will join us. George Hadjoglou moved to approve an expenditure of not to exceed $300 for a lunch for the Clergy following the service. Dino Zografos seconded the motion. The motion carried.

Father Constantin reminded us that the Wednesday Lenten Lecture series would soon commence. He noted that while several organizations have agreed to host a potluck dinner during the Lecture, there is still the need for the purchase of drinks and paper products. Dean Mavrovitis moved to approve $250 for necessary purchases. Spyro seconded the motion. The motion carried.

Father Constantin informed that St. Michael’s Home is accepting sponsorships of certain rooms in its facilities. Sponsorship of rooms begin at $25,000 for one room resident studios and increase by level. Peter Xanthos moved that the Cathedral explore sponsorship, including the level and funding options. Peter Menoudakos seconded the motion. The motion carried. President Vorkas advised that he would set up an exploratory sub-Committee based on this motion.

President Vorkas noted that a Book of Needs is being established. He will be establishing a small sub-Committee consisting of Father Constantin and the chairpeople of the Church and House Committee to compile the Book of Needs, which Father Constantin will maintain and that would be put online. Those wishing to donate to the Cathedral will be referred to the list.

Youth Report: Father Constantin reported that during the March 4th Cathedral Cup, we invited two Seminarians to assist. The Seminarians will hold discussions with different teams in the Saint Anastasia Chapel. John Hadjisava moved to approve a stipend of $150 to each or $300 in total. Liz Comack seconded the motion. The motion carried.

Father Constantin advised that in a past meeting, the Parish Council approved the purchase of a new scoring table for $1,200. Due to some unforeseen shipping and design costs, the price of the scoring table was $1,750. George Hadjoglou moved to ratify the purchase for $1,750. John Hajisava seconded the motion. The motion carried.

Spyro Georgopalis reported that the GOYA Midnight Run was very successful. He noted that the need appears to have grown.

Treasurer’s Report: Due to our computer virus issues, the Report could not be compiled for tonight’s meeting.

President Vorkas reported that Treasurer, Stephen Makrinos, was in the process of performing an audit of financial records of our Church ministries and organizations.

President Vorkas also reported that Steve would be scheduling a Finance Committee report for 2016 Year-End review.

Financial Report: The Financial Secretaries presented the report. After discussion, George Zakos moved to approve payment of outstanding bills reflected in the report. Lou Yeostros seconded the motion.

Parade Committee Report: Lou Yeostros reported that a Parade Committee meeting would take place on Wednesday, February 22, 2017.

Scouting Committee Report: Lou Yeostros reported that Scout Sunday that took place two weeks ago was a great success. He noted that there was a great turn out of children helping at the Pangari.

Lou reported that 15 Religious Metals were awarded, and he thanked Father Constantin, Steve Pontickio and Alex Orphanos for preparing the Scouts.

Lou reported that the Prophet Elias award was given to our current Scoutmaster, Dr. Dean Cherpelis. In addition three scholarships were awarded to three Eagle Scouts based on their first semester freshman year: Lucas Demas, Yianni Flouskakos and Peter Germanakos.

Lou reported that after the Scouts served at Fellowship Hour, approximately 220 guests attended the Blue and Gold Luncheon in the Hellenic Room. He noted that five Cubs Scouts crossed over to Boy Scouts, which is the largest number in many years.

Lastly, he noted that the Boy Scouts were holding their Pinewood Derby in the Father Nicholas J. Magoulias Cathedral Center tonight.

Entertainment Committee report: Niko Kontoleon reported that the Glendi was a success. He noted that 175 people were in attendance of which 103 were adults. He thanked all those who attended and who donated toward the event. He thanked his co-chair Anastasios Stampolis, Maria Vorkas, Cally Dunnigan, Maria Papachristos and the Parish Council members for all their help. Interim report on revenue and expenses are as follows: $8,500 and $4,800, respectively.

House Committee Report: Tony Pantelidis reported that the Hellenic Room was freshly painted by Larry and himself.

Tony reported that Larry made repairs to our boilers. He replaced the heat exchange on the downstairs boiler. He is also working on the boiler in the Cathedral.

Tony reported that by the next P.C. meeting, the Hellenic Room floors would be refinished.

President Vorkas thanked John Papachristos for overseeing the repairs of the exterior Cathedral brass doors. He noted that we are securing quotes from the same company to repair the closing mechanisms of interior doors near the Pangari as well as the exterior metal doors to the parking lot near the Cathedral office.

Festival Committee: Fran Lutfy reported that planning is underway, and the Committee has met with most venue chairs.

She noted that the Committee has a social media team that has changed our advertising and has created a festival dedicated website at www.LongIslandGreekFestival.com as well as Facebook and Instagram pages. As well, we commenced a Corporate Sponsorship Program.

Church Committee: George K. Lavas reported that Sunday of Orthodoxy is on March 5. He reminded us that we needed extra security and Parish Council members to assist with the outdoor procession.

George K. Lavas also noted that he sent an email regarding assistance needed for Saturday of the Souls (especially the third Saturday), the Salutations and the Akathist Hymn. He asked that Parish Council members to please reply to him and to assist.

He noted that Parish Council members are expected to serve at both Liturgies on Palm Sunday, and he urged that those that would not be present to advise him as soon as possible.

Choir Committee: George K. Lavas reported that the Choir is seeking people who wish to sing during Lent, Holy Week and Easter. He noted that the Choir rehearses on Thursdays.

Gala Sweepstakes: Harry Demiris reported that tickets and flyers were ordered and will be ready within a week for distribution. He encouraged the Parish Council to sell. He noted that the Committee is seeking to modernize its mid-range prizes and that suggestions were welcomed. He also thanked the Parish Council for all their efforts.

Old Business Harry Demiris inquired as to the status of installation of the brass lamps for the altar. Father Constantin explained that the arms were not received from the vendor. The vendor reported that although mailed, they were recently returned. The vendor advised that he was mailing out the arms forthwith.

Peter Menoudakos reported that 22 Chelsea was sold to another purchaser and that the Committee would report on any changes.

New Business: George K. Lavas noted that the desk chairs in the Cathedral office needed to be replaced. President Vorkas referred the matter to the House Committee.

Niko Kontoleon proposed that the Parish Council organize its own Midnight Run in the future. .

George Zakos moved to adjourn the meeting. Harry Monioudis seconded the motion. The motion carried, and the meeting was adjourned at 10:30pm.

Opening Prayer: Father Constantin led the Parish Council in an opening prayer.

Approval of Minutes: No meeting minutes were presented.

Opening Statement: Vice President Marinos opened with an apology from the President Vorkas. He unfortunately had to remain in China for an additional week. He insisted that we stay on schedule and hold the Parish Council monthly meeting on time.

Vice President Marinos informed all that Basil Skelos has passed. Father Constantin provided the details of the wake: Sunday March 19 – 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. in the Cathedral Funeral – Monday March 20 @11:00 a.m.

George K Lavas will be requesting PC coverage for the wake and funeral services.

Vice President Marinos asked for our prayers and well wishes for Deacon Matthew after his surgery and for Jim Ginis for his recent accident.

Vice President Marinos thanked the GOYA advisors and all who helped make the Cathedral Cup a successful event. The Babylon team won the championship.

The Apokreatiko Glendi was a success. Thank you to the Chairs Nick Kontoleon and Anastasios Stampolis for orchestrating a wonderful party.

Next Parish Council meeting will take place on April 20, 2017.

Correspondence: Vice President Marinos advised that the President received a request from the Greek School PTA requesting permission to sell Easter lambades during Fellowship Hour the week before Palm Sunday and outside the back of Cathedral and on Palm Sunday.

Vice President Marinos reminded all Parish Council members to fulfill at this time their 2016 stewardship commitment and to submit their pledge for 2017.

Liz Comack presented a summary of the last Stewardship Meeting. In order to further promote Stewardship, the committee recommended several key items.

She proposed that we order Stewardship pens with inscriptions of the St Paul and the following: You are the Church! Be a Steward today!

The pens along with a pledge card to accompany a Bulletin on Palm Sunday will be given to each family attending the services.

She made a motion to purchase these 2000 pens NTE $1500.00. Seconded by John Hajisava; Motion passed.

Clergy Report: Father Constantin stated we are hosting a Marriage preparatory Ceremony on Saturday March 18 which includes breakfast and lunch. There are 30 couples attending. He indicated that the cost would be about $1500.00.

Youth Report: Father Constantin informed that the Cathedral Cup was held on March 4, 2017. It was very successful. We hosted the seven surrounding Churches. Babylon won the championship. GOYA presented a check for $810.00 which paid the fees as well as the $100.00 clean up fee.

Father Constantin reminded us that the Archdiocesan Oratorical Festival is this Sunday March 19.

Father Constantin indicated that the GOARCH has requested use of our facilities for the following dates for use by the Soccer League to hold their Tournaments.

May 6 and May 7 from 9a.m. to 6 p.m. for the JOY league subject to the usual conditions as of previous contracts. Triphon Kollitides motioned to approve the use of our facilities subject to the usual conditions. George Hadjoglou seconded the motion.

Motion carried; Father Constantin also received a request for the use of our fields by the GOARCH soccer league in the Fall for the following dates: Saturdays – September 16 to November 18 from 12 noon to 5 p.m.

Triphon Kollitides made a motion to allow use of our facilities subject to the usual terms and conditions Harry Monioudis seconded the motion; Motion carried; Father Constantin also announced that Archbishop Demetrios is planning to celebrate liturgy at our Cathedral on Palm Sunday.

Church Committee George K. Lavas presented the 2017 Federation membership dues by the choir.

The dues are $100.00 payable to the DAD Federation. He moved to pay the dues.

Harry Monioudis seconded the motion. Motion carried George K. Lavas also discussed and presented the Church Committee Recommended Rules of proper Parish Council Behavior during Services.

George K. Lavas thanked the many individuals who assisted with Clean Monday Reception for both parishioners and Clergy: Father Constantin did most of the shopping; Presvytera Alexandra; George Vorkas; Lou Patrickakos; George Hadjoglou; Athena Kallinikos; Kathy Marinos; Irene Ginis; Steve Pontickio; Bob Donus; Larry Griffin; Nicole Rousakis Both receptions went well; both parishioners and the clergy were complimentary. We had a surprise visit from Bishop Sevastianos; Menu was laganes, fakes, salad, fruit, halva, Lenten paximadia, and coffee.

The anniversary of the Tearing Icon went well. Thank you for Bob Donus, George Hadjoglou, Harry Raptakis, who served on the Eve and Tony Vaccari who served today.

George K. Lavas then discussed Trays for Holy Week.

Palm Sunday and Good Friday Lamentations - two (2) Trays - First for Church needs; Second for Family Life Center Good Friday lamentations – two (2) trays No tray on Palm Sunday evening, Holy Monday evening, Good Friday morning; One tray for all other services ; Even though some other local parishes charge $10 for the Lamentation and Anastasi Candles the price will remain at $8.00.

George K. Lavas made a final note to compliment Father Constantin for all he has done and especially how he has taken on so much through the past three months.

George K. Lavas stated it would be added to the Palm Sunday Bulletin. He also stated all information for the Palm Sunday Bulletin must be received in the Cathedral Office by Monday March 27th.

George Hadjoglou stated the next Greek School meeting will be held next week.

Nursery School: George Hadjoglou announced that the Nursery School summer session will be held this July.

The fees will be identical to last year 2016; George Hadjoglou made the motion., Joan Prieston seconded it. Motion carried Entertainment Committee Niko Kontoleon presented the Glendi Report.

He and Anastasios Stampolis were the Chairs.

Gala Sweepstakes Bill Lembo indicated everyone will be receiving their tickets.

APPO Tony Vaccari stated the APPO meeting will be held Monday March 27.

Greek Independence Day Parade Louis Yeostros reminded everyone that the Parade is on March 26. All need to make a reservation. There are three buses going to the Parade. There will be a bagged lunch and a Lenten Supper upon our return to the Church. Sign up at fellowship hour or online; Reservations AHEPA is holding their Easter Glendi on April 27.They are also holding the Byzantine Dinner on May 7. They are requesting approval to waive reservation fee but pay the cleanup fee.

We will have the Chefs cook off on Sunday only this year.

We will be blessing the motor cycles this year on Thursday again.

We are adding a Festival Section to the Bulleting for Palm Sunday.
