Welcome to the 51st Stowmarket Carnival. I am sure you would agree that it is a major achievement as it continues to be the towns’ biggest fund raising event. Because of the current economic climate and the pressures placed on many families we have reduced the entry fee for this years event. Hopefully we can still rely on your support by attending what I believe is value for money family event .

I joined the carnival committee last year after making the mistake of mentioning that I was bored to my hairdresser Denise Hutton. I had only lived in Stowmarket for two years and hadn’t yet visited the carnival let alone taken part in it.

Before I knew it, I was responsible for the procession, the gates and charity stalls so boredom was no longer an option.

I had no idea of the planning, costings or red tape involved with making a carnival happen and it’s no wonder so many fall by the wayside.

I am the vice-chair for this year’s committee and I have been lucky enough to work with some incredibly dedicated and knowledgeable people, who help to make carnival the fantastic weekend it is. It’s hard going, with plenty of highs and lows throughout the year. But it’s also very rewarding to see the event come together. We are all volunteers and we all have the same aim - to make the carnival a success and to make sure it happens year in and year out. It has been a privilege to be involved in 2011, and it would be great to see more committee members in 2012. I hope you all enjoy the weekend and please remember lots of big waves and smiles for the procession as it passes through the town. I shall be at the control caravan for most of the weekend, so please feel free to visit me or Denise with any feedback you have, or if you would like more information about how to get involved next year.

Stowmarket Carnival Beer Tent

The Carnival bar is being run this year

by Stowmarket Rugby Club, who have been doing a great job for the last few years.

The event has become an important fund-raising opportunity for the club as everyone involved over the weekend gives their time for free.

This adds to the charitable theme of the carnival which raises money for good causes in the town.

The club urgently needs funds to run its large youth section where rugby is played from the age of six until the players join the adult teams.

This year the bar will be serving all the usual selection of drinks but in addition we will be offering the new Premium Selection of drinks brewed

by Aspels including Suffolk Blonde, currently only available in a select number of outlets in London.

Carnival Window Spotting Competition, Monday 4th July – Saturday 16th July Dozens of businesses and shops in Stowmarket are taking part in this year’s carnival competition.

Entrants simply have to keep their eyes wide open and scour the town to find the shops and businesses (which have spot numbers in their windows,) and then find the item on display which they do not normally sell.

For example if you walk past a shoe shop and spot a lump of cheese in their window, you should find their spot number and write the details on your entry forms which will be available from spot entry shops.

Please note: Dead flies do not count as the mystery item!!

When you have filled in your entry

form, please post it through the door of Carphone Warehouse.

There will be cash prizes for 1st, 2nd and 3rd places and while you’re looking at the windows please nominate the best-dressed, as they will also win a trophy for their efforts.

Please note too that this year’s competition will be running for two weeks, so there are no excuses for not entering such as bad weather!

Everyone can join in so why not take part as a family?

You’re bound to find that elusive item between you so it’s ‘noses to the windows’ and remember, it’s not always about winning, it’s about taking part. Best of luck everyone and have loads of fun!

Procession The theme for the 2011 procession is “Festivals around the world” and promises to be an array of colour and imagination.

We would like to thank the many groups who spend hours making their floats and costumes for all their effort and hard work - without their involvement there would be no procession.

This year the procession returns to the old route.

We would love to see huge crowds lining the route waving and cheering everyone taking part.

This year it’s not a case of blink and you’ll miss it, we have had fantastic support and it promises to be a real spectacle.

The procession has not been without its hiccups and we thought the organisation would be a fairly

straightforward process.

But a change in legislation meant this year’s procession looked at one stage as if it might not go ahead.

A potential bill for traffic management, the cost of policing the event, as well as compulsory road closure notices and extra permissions needed from the council, meant things looked very bleak.

We thought very hard about it but decided you couldn’t have a carnival without a procession - it would have been unthinkable.

Darryl Chapman, one of our carnival advisers, set to work on hours of paperwork, liaised with the police, the traffic management company and the council.

We are delighted to report the police have offered their time for free and we now have the relevant paperwork for the procession to go ahead.

the management company will be taken from fund-raising events and we are hoping they will not be too expensive.

For me the procession is the heart of the carnival - it kicks off the whole event and shows the talent to be found right here in our town as well as taking us back to the days when the Stowmarket had a sense of community.

I hope in future the red-tape and costs won’t continue to increase as unfortunately it may restrict the scope of the event.

Again we all owe a huge thank you to the police, Darryl Chapman, all the groups and individuals involved, the lorry companies and their drivers and finally, you the crowd for turning out to watch.

Sunday 17th July 2011 2pm Do you know someone with a dog, do you have a dog, ever fancied entering them into a dog show?

Look no further than this year s carnival and show off your pet in one or more of the categories listed below: 1-Best Puppy

It is a tradtion every year that the Stowmarket Carnival has a craft marquee it was always one of the highlights for me as a child .

Amazingly we have crafters travelling from as far away as Kent to attend but the majority are from East Anglia, with a wide range of goods from handmade jewelry, plants, cards, designer handbags, herbal products and even a Tarot reader!

My name is Claire and I have lived in Stowmarket since I was five and have been to almost every carnival, and here I am now volunteering to organise this year’s marquee.

We try to attract local crafts people to showcase their wares or just promote their business.

The marquee will open on Saturday 16th July and we have attracted a wide range of stall holders.

You don’t to have to make your own

This year we have increased our advertising and found the response overwhelming and it is lovely to think will be very well supported.

As well as room inside the marquee we also have space outside for those prepared to brave the elements.

We encourage local businesses and traders to be part of our carnival by providing them with opportunity to promote

their company and products.

So if you have a talent for making your own crafts whether it is wood turning to jewelry making or a local business, why not think about attending next year?

There are several ways to get involved.....you can hire a table or space inside or outside the craft marquee.

Jo Kozak Entertainer Joe Kozak left school in 2008 aged 18. He appeared in several productions while at school for Stowmarket Operatic Dramatic Society and Oskar Foxtrot.

This was in addition to the roles that he took in school productions.

He has worked for Ted UK at various park resorts as a Team Star where his duties included organising and running Kids Clubs during the day and then entertaining the adults in the evening with a mixture of comedy and singing, both solo and as part of the group.

During this time Joe also took part in workshops at the famous Comedy Club in London,

culminating in a live performance.

At the end of the 2010 season Joe joined a cast for a regional tour of Jack and the Beanstalk.

As Muddles Joe had to sing, dance and narrate to audiences across the South East.

It was while Joe was on tour that he was approached by Bernie from Jokerz Wild, who had seen Joe perform at Park Resorts.

They asked him if he was interested in joining the trio and after a successful audition he did.

He can now be seen every weekend appearing at holiday camps around the country

Stowmarket Carnival Charity Stalls

Charity stalls form a large part of the carnival especially on Saturday.

We welcome any charities who would like to have a stall on the recreation ground and for many smaller local charities, the carnival proves to be their biggest annual fundraiser.

From tombolas to a coconut shy, football games to guess the name of the teddy, there will be something for everyone.

We are thrilled to report in the charity stalls last year raised £2250.56, thanks to your generosity. We appreciate this year as been tough financially for everyone, but please visit the charity stalls over the weekend and dig deep.

Car Show Sunday From 12am to 5pm

proceeds are going to local charities.

My name is Paul Applin and I was drafted in to the carnival by a previous chairman, Mark Cook, to turn the Carnival Car Show into something more interesting.

The team is headed up by multiple H.K.S. drag champion Mark Moseley with his 1000 BHP plus drag Skyline.

So please come and see us.

With Nick Davidson’s help I set about trying to create a friendly, family car show.

Judging by the feedback from participants last year’s show was a great success.

We loved the support of people who admired the vehicles we had on show, but this is only the second one that we’ve done for the carnival .

We hope to get even more support from the public this year as all

The Salvation Army The Stowmarket Salvation Army church celebrates its 125th anniversary this year. It was on 26 February 1886 that the church was first established in the town, and to celebrate this anniversary a number of special events have been arranged.

1 and 2 October – Harvest Flower festival when former leaders of the corps, Majors John and Sylvia Randle will lead worship.

8 and 9 October – A reunion for the senior brass band – pictured - (also celebrating its 125th anniversary), led by Kenneth Downie who is a renowned Salvation Army composer.

Planning The Big Weekend The planning for the carnival starts almost immediately after the last one has finished and in some years acts and groups have been booked even further in advance than a year. Each year the AGM is held in September, where the committee for the next year is formed and the jobs distributed. We always hope for new people to come and join the existing committee and bring with them their skills, knowledge or the willingness to help us make the carnival bigger and better.

The committee are all volunteers, mostly with families, jobs and other commitments so their time and skills are given for free.

Financially, like life its a difficult thing to plan, we have no control over changes of legislation, which

impact or costs that have always been minimal then increase dramatically, its a case of trying to source the best prices and quality from all suppliers. The security, bar, fencing, magazine and toilets this year were all put out to tender this year. This process will more than likely be implemented again for the 2012 Carnival, and if you like to be considered for any of these areas please contact a member of the committee for guidance.

Meetings are held every month on the second Monday, where updates are given and any news is reported in to committee. The format for the carnival is normally quite similar, but the work load seems ever increasing.

We are very grateful to the Stowmarket businesses, and groups who support us year in year out, without you the carnival would not be the same.

In keeping with the Carnival theme, we have some dancers from The Ballroom Experience Co - Suffolk’s answer to “Strictly Come Dancing” - demonstrating the salsa.

The theme of the exhibition was ‘Industry and Crafts’ and every local businesses in the town and surrounding areas had been invited to display their wares.

A ‘Bert Stocks’ Fun Fair was also on the recreation ground for that weekend and it had been decided to re-introduce a carnival procession to celebrate the Queen’s visit.

The town had organised many carnivals in the past, but the last major one was in 1945 to celebrate the end of World War Two.

Needham Market had its annual carnival during the intervening years which became a major summer attraction for many Stowmarket people.

But with the re-introduction of the Stowmarket Carnival, which was bigger and offered more attractions, the Needham declined and was eventually abandoned in the 1960’s.

Carnival Queen I’m fortunate enough to be going to university in September to study two subjects & highly passionate about english literature and drama. I have lived in Stowmarket my entire life ,I have been to six schools in the town, been a member of the Girl Guides and volunteered at the Cancer Research UK shop and the Museum of East Anglian Life and I wanted to do one last thing for the town . Being carnival queen enables me to not only fulfill this wish but to do it in a sparkly tiara and beautiful dress!.Aside from drama and English I adore baking,singing and of course shoes! When I leave university I hope to go into teaching or drama therapy .

Carnival Princess My name is debbie Greeves aged 10 my hobbies are Cara-Lea school of dance , judo and Stowmarket junior concert band .

My favorite place in Stowmarket is the recreation ground when the carnival is there because there are lots of action and entertainment and really cool rides !

I am a huge fan of JLS I live in Stowmarket and I am a pupil at Stowmarket Middle School . I have two cats and a pond full of Koi carp .

Hello my name is Fern Margetson I am nine years old . I live at Ringshall with my mum,dad,and big sister Felicity.

I go to Combs Ford primary school (the teachers are great) and in September I will go to Needham Market Middle .I adore reading and will read anything I get my hands on!! We have lot of pets, which i help look after . I enjoy playing the clarinet & ukulele . My favorite place in Stowmarket is the Leisure Centre, where I have swimming lessons. I am now a silver hat. I also like looking round all the different shops in town with my sister .We all enjoy being at the museum Fern Margetson
